Ferry to Tokyo from the Islands Inside Look
Ferry to Tokyo from the Islands Inside Look
Overview
In this live stream episode, John Daub boards the Tachibana Maru ferry at Hachijojima for a 12-hour journey back to Tokyo. Filmed in July 2017, the video captures the departure process, the rough sea conditions, and an inside look at the ferry's amenities, including cabins, vending machines, and dining options. John provides context on the geography of the Izu Islands, comparing the ferry experience to flying and sharing historical notes about Miyakejima, the ferry's next stop.
The video serves as a practical guide for travelers considering surface transport between the Tokyo islands and the mainland. John highlights the cost difference between ferries and helicopters/planes, the reality of seasickness on choppy days, and the unique scenery available only from the sea. As the ferry leaves the port, the signal gradually fades, marking the end of the live broadcast until he reaches Tokyo.

Japan Travel Tips
- Ferry Cost: The ticket from Hachijojima to Tokyo cost approximately $100 (around ¥9,000–¥10,000 depending on exchange rates at the time).
- Duration: The ferry takes about 12 hours, compared to a 1-hour flight. However, when accounting for airport check-in and transit, the total time difference is only about 4–5 hours.
- Seasickness: The Pacific waters can be very rough. John warns against drinking alcohol immediately due to the waves.
- Amenities: Ferries like the Tachibana Maru have vending machines (food, drinks, alcohol), a restaurant (sometimes closed), and sleeping cabins (second class available).
- Signal: Cell phone signal is strong at the port but fades quickly once out at sea.
- Route: This ferry stops at Miyakejima before heading to Tokyo.
Japanese Language & Culture Notes
- Shuppatsu (出発): Means "departure." Announced over the PA system when the ferry is ready to leave.
- Ferry Music: "Auld Lang Syne" is played when the ferry doors are closing, signaling imminent departure.
- Island Names: Hachijojima (八丈島), Miyakejima (三宅島), Aogashima (青ヶ島). These are part of the Izu Islands administered by Tokyo Metropolis.
- PA Announcements: Public announcements on transport often include safety information and stop details, though John notes some were hard to hear over the wind/waves.
Food & Drink Guide
- Karee Don (Curry Rice): Available via ticket purchase for meals on board.
- Omurice (Omelet Rice): Listed on the restaurant menu.
- Soba (Buckwheat Noodles): Available as a meal option.
- Vending Machine Snacks: Takoyaki (octopus balls), Karaage (fried chicken), Onigiri (rice balls), Chahan (fried rice), Cup Noodles.
- Alcohol: Beer vending machines available inside; Bacardi mojitos and Sapporo Ebisu noted. John advises caution due to rough seas.
People
- John Daub: Host and narrator. He is traveling solo on this leg, returning from Aogashima and Hachijojima to Tokyo.
- Viewers (Jim, Nosh Abroad, EPW389, Stephanie Perez, APW 8389): Commenters on the live stream whom John acknowledges and thanks for super chats and support.
Key Takeaways
- Scenery vs. Speed: While flying is faster, the ferry offers unique Pacific Ocean views and a relaxing change of pace if you aren't prone to seasickness.
- Tokyo's Islands: Many people don't realize islands like Hachijojima and Miyakejima are administratively part of Tokyo.
- Volcanic History: Miyakejima was evacuated due to poisonous gas from volcanic eruptions around 1999/2000, a major news event in Japan at the time.
- Budget Travel: The ferry is a cheaper alternative to helicopters or planes for reaching the remote islands.

00:00:03 John Daub: Hello everybody! I'm in Hachijojima. I'm about to get onto the ferry. This is the ferry going towards Tokyo. It's a beautiful, beautiful day. The clouds are all around this mountain peak, so it looks pretty mysterious, but out to sea. And this is the Tachibana Maru. That's the name of the ship. It's pretty much blue skies up there. Now today has a lot of waves, so I'm guessing it's going to be a bumpy ride.
00:00:46 John Daub: Here's my ticket. It cost me about $100 to get to Tokyo from here. What a nice day. I gotta give the ticket to the guy. Hello! Thank you. Whoa, it's moving. It's moving!
00:01:25 John Daub: I don't know if I'm going to lose the signal on the boat, but... So I have the cheapest ticket, and that means I'm going down below. Everyone seems to be going up above, but I'll go down below a little bit later. First I want to get a quick look at the ship. Let me put my bag down. Whoa, cool! Portholes!
00:02:19 John Daub: Hey, thanks for that, Jim. So Jim writes, have a great trip back to Tokyo. Thanks for all the work at Aogashima and bringing the remote areas of Japan to us. You're very welcome. Looks like we got some vending machines over there. And here's the captain's area with all the information. Let's see. Before I go down into the pit, because I got a feeling I'm going to lose the signal, let's go up.
00:02:48 John Daub: So this, let me tell you a little bit about this ferry. So this ferry is going to take about 12 hours to get from Hachijojima to Tokyo. It's not exactly an easy ride either. Everyone, while I was waiting for the ferry, has been telling me that since you're going to get to Tokyo, you're going to get to Aogashima. And don't drink alcohol right away. Why would I drink alcohol right away? Well, there's not much else to do on the ship, on the ferry.
00:03:20 John Daub: So this is Hachijojima. There's some people coming onto the boat. It is a pretty nice day today. Except if you joined us now, you didn't see on the other side, there's two mountains here on Hachijojima. One on the left side, one on the right side, and in the middle. Thank you, Nosh Abroad. And the pier is right in the middle. So we're sandwiched between two cloudy areas on the island. Here's a family that's going to get onto the boat soon. But the, it's moving. Do you see it? It's moving. Look. This is not easy to get on. I bet you they're going to have some trouble. It's moving. I told you. So they're going to Miyakejima.
00:04:47 John Daub: This is a pretty cool boat. I mean, over here there's some places where you can sit down and eat when it's not rocking so bad left and right. Thank you, EPW389, for the style points. I appreciate it. Alright, we're up on deck. This is pretty cool.
00:05:21 John Daub: So as I was saying, on the other side of the island, Hachijojima. So before I show you this side, Hachijojima right here, you can see, there's... Anyway, Hachijojima has two mountains on it. Two, I guess, volcanoes. I'm not sure what they are. But this is a high mountain here. On this side, this is another high mountain. You can see it's just engulfed in clouds. You can't even see the peak. The peak is up here. But the clouds have just sort of hung around here. But wow, look at the color of the water. It's really beautiful.
00:06:22 John Daub: If you have any women, please return to [Sambashima?]. The hot springs are in [Miturajima?] and Miyakejima. The water is flowing through [Zoushou?]. So they're making an announcement that they're going to be taking off soon. They're going to take off soon. Shuppatsu (departure) means departure. But I got to tell you something. The waves are super rough. And this is not going to be a fun ride. I can see over here. Over here I can see the waves crashing onto the beach. And it's intense. It's pretty intense. Wow. Take a look over here. This is going to be a rough ride.
00:07:16 John Daub: Ow. Are you seeing this? There's a lot of [coppers?] down there. Seasick, I'm sure of it. I came here by airplane about ten days ago. I spent two days here. And then I took the helicopter to Aogashima. And then I took the helicopter back yesterday from Aogashima. And then today I'm taking a boat because, number one, it's cheaper. And number two, it's a boat. I mean, why not take something different than an airplane? I've been on hundreds of airplane flights. I haven't been on too many ferries in Japan. And this one is going to be pretty choppy.
00:08:13 John Daub: It's so cold. Are you okay? We're going up and down a lot. And we haven't even left. You can see how fast the clouds are moving as well over the other mountain over there. They're moving around it fast. And then the clouds here are just staying there, stationary. So this is what it looks like out here. The water is stunningly beautiful. It's very blue. It's like a tropical blue. Which I didn't expect from Tokyo. But it's Pacific Blue, I guess would be a name.
00:09:06 John Daub: So I'm going to take you down below. I don't know if the signals are going to cut out. So I apologize in advance if we lose the signal. But it's worth a try, right? To get a look inside of a ferry. I don't know how long we got the signal either. Because once you leave the sea, it's got to be... The signal's got to get a lot weaker, right? Stephanie Perez, thank you very much. Hey, John. Where are you today? I'm in Hachijojima. Did you take a chopper back to Tokyo? I took the chopper from Aogashima yesterday to Hachijojima. And today I'm taking the boat back. So thank you for the super chat. I really appreciate that. Because that's super chat for my lunch.
00:09:55 John Daub: Okay. They have vending machines. Like a lot of them. They also have a restaurant. The restaurant's closed. But you can get your meal on the boat here by picking a ticket. They have a karee don (curry rice), like a meat don, omelet, omurice, toast, pancakes, soba, curry. And then there's a vending machine area. Favorite noodles. And then the typical hot vending machines. Typical ferry fare, takoyaki, karaage chicken, chicken and potatoes, onigiri rice balls, chahan (fried rice), potato fries. Cup noodles. Here's the restaurant in here. It looks pretty nice.
00:11:07 John Daub: So they play this music, Auld Lang Syne. They play Auld Lang Syne when something's closing. So basically they're closing the doors. I hope that's it. Am I on the right boat? I hope so. So here are some of the cabins. We're leaving. Oh, we're leaving. Wow. Does that mean I'm losing the signal?
00:12:00 John Daub: It's sealed real tight. Can't get out. So these are compartments. Awesome! Beer vending machines! They got Bacardi mojitos. Sapporo Ebisu. Awesome! They have smoking rooms. It's a pretty clean looking bathroom. So second class is not too bad, but I'm in the deep second class. I'm in the second class, you know, like, remember from Titanic when DiCaprio was in the bottom of the boat? That's where I am. Because I'm a pirate. I'm a pirate, mate.
00:13:34 John Daub: So these are all sleeping quarters. And there's a little place for luggage. Everybody has a life jacket. Thanks, Jim. I'm going to be having two beers with that. That's right. So I'm going to go back up on deck. I'm really starting to wobble. The boat's going like this. It's true. My luggage is okay. Here's my bags. There's Hachijojima. You can see one mountain, two mountains, and we are leaving from here. Pretty cool.
00:14:45 John Daub: All right. I'm going to have to end this feed because we've left the island and the signal's going to go dark. Ooh, sugoi nami (amazing waves). She's used to it. And I'm going to end this feed. I'm going to go back up. Back up on deck. Woo! You know what? If this boat sinks, there's the island. Because I want to take that thing up there. That's the boat I want. I claim this in the name of Only in Japan. That one's got a motor. All right. Everybody, I'm now waving goodbye to Hachijojima.
00:15:43 John Daub: This trip has been really amazing. I didn't broadcast a lot of live streams from Aogashima because the signal was bad. But here in Hachijojima, I was able to and did a drone stream and I did a helicopter kind of stream. And now this is a boat stream. And I'm glad to be able to share this experience with you. I'm going to turn the camera around. So you don't have to look at me anymore. I kind of look like a pirate. I'm wearing this because I sunburned like my head and my neck. There's Hachijojima, everybody, live. In the two mountains. This is the airport. All the hotels are here. The ferry port. There's the abandoned hotel. Everyone said, did you film the abandoned hotel? There it is right there. The abandoned hotel. There's the camp spot. The camp spot right next to the abandoned hotel. There it is. Hachijojima. Between the mountains. Powered with clouds. Stationary clouds over both of the peaks.
00:17:25 John Daub: APW 8389. If you're drunk on a wobbly boat, do you walk straight? I'll tell you when I get to Tokyo. Very windy over there. This is one of the craziest live streams I think I've ever done. It takes 12 hours because we're about 300 kilometers away from Tokyo. So 300 kilometers by boat takes about 12 hours. By flight, it takes about an hour. But by the time I get to the airport and check in and check out and everything, the boat is just four or five hours difference than the plane, really. So that's one reason I'm taking the boat. Another reason is for sights like this. I just want us to relax for a little bit. Whoa! You can't feel this because the Osmo is taking the waves and stabilizing it. But man, am I getting pushed up and down left and right right now. Yeah, but the scenery is different. I just wanted a change of scenery. I wanted to take a look at the sea for a little bit. Kind of enjoy some chill time. Because when I was on the island, I was working pretty hard. And it was hot. It was hot! The only people darker than me were some of the locals that work out on the farm. Because those guys were like pitch black, some of them. But I got really dark out there.
00:19:11 John Daub: Okay, goodbye. I'm going to be losing the signal. I can see the bars going down. Cell phone bars are going down. Bye bye, Hachijojima. I'll be back someday. Bandit Hotel. Creepy looking. I wish I could explore you, [Micolai's?] dream. But I'm on the boat now. Any questions you want to ask? I still got some signal. I shouldn't waste it, right? Yeah. I love boats too. This is so much fun. On deck, I wonder why. Is that a bad sign? Don't go into 1408. Uh oh. I'm glad I didn't see that movie. Oh, there's like, there's some dudes here. I'm safe. Yeah, the boat costs about $100. Here's the ticket. Hold on, let me get underneath here. Here's the ticket. It's, uh, yeah, if you do the exchange rate, it's about $90, I think, right now.
00:21:10 John Daub: They're going in. The live stream ahead of me now is open sea onward to Tokyo. This ferry makes two stops. The next stop is in Miyakejima. Miyakejima is a place I know because about 18 years ago when I came to Japan, 19 years ago, a year after that, Miyakejima erupted, and all the locals on Miyakejima were evacuated and had to go and live in the city of Tokyo. And there was a relocation, like, settlement, kind of, like, the kids had to go to different schools, and that was in the news every day while Miyakejima was exploding. And now, 18 years later, I'm getting a chance to take a look at that island, which is going to be pretty cool. It's not exploding now, but Miyakejima, the reason why they evacuated was because it was spewing poisonous gas, and the gas was settling all over the island, and it was dangerous enough that they had to evacuate the people. Hopefully there's no poisonous gases either. But anyways, Miyakejima is one of the places I wanted to go to, but now by the boat, I'll make a quick stop there. So that's going to be pretty cool.
00:22:39 John Daub: This boat ruins my life. It ruins my entire day. I'm going to be on the boat from 9:40 a.m. Right now it's 9:51 a.m. in Hachijojima. And I'll be on this boat until about 8:50 p.m., so almost 12 hours on the boat, which is a pretty long ride. So next stop, Miyakejima, then Tokyo. And from Tokyo, I'll be uploading the next video onto Only in Japan's main channel, edamame video, about edamame, which has been taking a long time. So get out there.
00:23:18 John Daub: So I'm going to leave you. I'm not jumping into the water. Some of these comments are crazy. If I jump in, you're never going to see me again. Jump in the water. Who wrote that? So I'm going to leave you for the next 20 seconds or so with a nice view of the sea. It's so peaceful and relaxing. This is live, by the way, so enjoy it, because I certainly am. So wherever you are in the world, have a good day, good night. See you on the other side. I'm not swimming to Hawaii either.
