Coca Cola Coffee Vending Machine Challenge
Coca Cola Coffee Vending Machine Challenge
Overview
In this live stream from October 2017, John Daub explores the streets of Shinjuku, Tokyo, on a specific mission: to find and taste the limited edition Coca-Cola Plus Coffee. Joined by his friend and former NHK colleague Jennifer, John hunts down a vending machine stocked with the rare "red whale" drink. The video captures the excitement of finding the machine, the process of purchasing using IC cards, and an honest taste test review.
Beyond the drink, the stream offers a casual walk through Shinjuku's iconic alleyways near the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building. John and Jennifer discuss vending machine etiquette, recycling habits in Japan, and share anecdotes from their past work together on NHK Tokyo Eye. The episode concludes with a plan to find food ("Feed Jennifer") and a shout-out to fellow creator Peter von Gomm.

Japan Travel Tips
- Vending Machine Payments: Most modern vending machines accept IC cards like Suica, Pasmo, and ICOCA, not just cash.
- Recycling: Nearly all vending machine sites have dedicated bins for cans and bottles nearby; use them.
- Limited Editions: Seasonal or limited drinks (like Coke Coffee) are not in every machine; you may need to search specific areas like Shibuya or Shinjuku.
- IC Card Interoperability: IC cards from different regions (e.g., ICOCA from Osaka) work in Tokyo vending machines.
- Alleyways: Shinjuku's government building area has famous narrow alleys (yokocho) great for photos and cheap food.
Japanese Language & Culture Notes
- Geppu (ゲップ): John explains this is the Japanese word for "burp," used humorously after drinking the carbonated beverage.
- Kanpai (乾杯): The standard toast ("Cheers") used before drinking.
- Teishoku (定食): A set meal, often including rice, miso soup, and a main dish; suggested by John as a food option.
- Yakitori (焼き鳥): Grilled chicken skewers, typically enjoyed with beer in the evening.
- Vending Machine Culture: Japan has a high density of vending machines, often featuring limited editions and tourist-friendly designs (e.g., geisha graphics).
Food & Drink Guide
- Coca-Cola Plus Coffee (コカ・コーラ プラス コーヒー)
- Description: Limited edition vending machine drink combining Coca-Cola taste with coffee flavor and extra caffeine.
- Price: ~140–150 Yen (implied by change remaining).
- Review: John gives it a thumbs down; Jennifer gives a sideways thumb. Tastes like Coke initially, coffee aftertaste. Too sweet for coffee purists.

00:00:06 John Daub: Welcome to Shinjuku! Yes, this is a live stream from central Tokyo and today we're gonna be introducing something pretty interesting. This is a redo because we had some connection problems in the first try, but that means we just do it again. And joining me on this amazing coffee report is this woman right there. Her name is Jennifer. She's a woman who needs no introduction. She's the woman who needs to be fed.
00:00:48 John Daub: Okay, bonjour. How do you do it? Left or right? Should we pretend like we're just meeting for the first time again? You're so bad at this. Do you start on the right side or the left side? Follow the mood. So if you keep going like this, you might meet in the center sometimes? Yeah, maybe it's left, right, left, right. Anyways, why... what are we doing here? I don't see any restaurants. No, there's no restaurants here. There's something very wrong with this live stream, but we're here for a specific mission and we're pretending like we're doing it again for the first time.
00:01:31 John Daub: I'm going to feed you, but first I'm going to feed you a drink and it's not any ordinary drink. It's a drink that we need for energy. It's a drink that can only be found in vending machines, a drink that can only be found right now at this period for a limited time in vending machines around the Shibuya-Shinjuku area. Yeah, you know what I'm talking about: Coke Coffee. This is my red whale, the white whale if you've read Moby Dick.
00:02:03 Jennifer: What is Coke Coffee? Is this kind of bad joke? I love coffee but I'm French, I shouldn't be drinking Coke. Well, you just told me that you love Starbucks, right? Yes. You don't like Coca-Cola?
00:02:21 John Daub: I don't drink a lot of Coca-Cola myself, it's just a joke. Anyways, never mind all that, we're just gonna go straight to it. This is a vending machine that has the red whale. It's a really Japanese-looking vending machine because it's got a geisha on it. Why? Because it's mostly for tourists, probably even says "Welcome to Japan," which is pretty cool. I think it's the first time I see one like that with the Japan Guide. There is some application.
00:02:52 Jennifer: Oh, but I'm not a tourist. Yeah, they have actually on the vending machine an application which is pretty crazy. Fine, tourist info spots near this vending machine.
00:03:04 John Daub: Okay, well that's pretty cool. So Japan has become a lot more tourist-friendly. I wouldn't know, I live here. Too many tourists, this is our country. She's just kidding. I'm so starving, let's get this done here. So from this geisha with a beautiful back—look at the way they've done this, it's really beautiful—but this is a typical Coca-Cola vending machine. There are others, you can see this one is an Ito En vending machine, but this Coca-Cola vending machine you can see has regular Coca-Cola. But we're looking for this one: boom! And Jennifer, you know what exactly it is? Coca-Cola Plus Coffee—double excitement, double the fun. Yes, and it's got extra caffeine for your pleasure. Double caffeine. Dude, here it's written. Oh, you have a pointer. Okay, how did you know it's gonna be this high? I guess they put this vending machine like 50 centimeters off the ground so you have to be a tall person to get to it.
00:04:19 John Daub: Okay, cool. Well, you know what? I'm gonna treat her.
00:04:56 Jennifer: You can pay for your drinks with coins and 1000 yen bills. Or digital money! Right, digital money. And I have a Suica card and Pasmo, but this one is ICOCA. And you can see you can use all of them on this system around Japan. I use the Osaka one because I like this color, but you can use this in Tokyo.
00:05:17 John Daub: Okay, you want me to get to it? Alright, push the button first.
00:05:21 Jennifer: I'm not only hungry, I'm thirsty too.
00:05:24 John Daub: Me too. Let's drink this thing. Alright, I'm gonna pay for it with the digital money. Sold out, sold out. Push, touch, it comes out. Oh, you missed it, it played a little song. And it told me I had 400 yen left, so I can't do this. It's cold.
00:05:49 Jennifer: I'm sorry, yeah it's Coke Coffee. Isn't it supposed to be coffee?
00:05:55 John Daub: Yeah, but I bet it's cold too. Yeah, this is our third can. I've already bought a bunch of them. Oh, thanks. Oh, somebody said Jennifer is so cute.
00:06:03 Jennifer: Merci. Oh look, you made her so happy. Merci.
00:06:07 John Daub: The advantages of having live chat. We can be complimented in the live stream. And insulted. Thank you very much for that insult. Oh my. Somebody insult? No no no, I didn't read that yet. Really? So we're gonna do this taste test. And this is where our live stream completely failed last time.
00:06:24 Jennifer: Yeah.
00:06:25 John Daub: Because you were about doing some kind of heresy. I don't know, this seems like a dead zone for streaming. Alright, let's do it from right here. I'm not gonna move from this spot. So right behind us is a Starbucks coffee. I just thought it's ironic to drink this in front of the Starbucks behind us. And you love Starbucks, right?
00:06:46 Jennifer: I am a big Starbucks fan because I think they have a good policy there and they treat people well. So not only the customers, so I support Starbucks. But I'm going to have... I try to go to the mom and pop shops, but if I can't find one I'll go to Starbucks because coffee wins the day.
00:07:02 John Daub: Alright, let's do this. Oh wait, mine's all nasty looking because it's been in my pocket. Look at this, this is dirty. Hold the camera. Yada yo, kawaii so. Ah okay. Good. Move for the traffic. Alright, thank you for the super chats, we're gonna read them at the end. Sorry let the stream cut. Oh yeah, sorry about that. Here we go. Sink the journey for a ship. Yes. Should I shake it up?
00:07:26 Jennifer: Yes, but far away from you please. Yada. Hold on a second, let me smell. Whoa, I can't smell anything, I just smell Coke. Chotto matte.
00:07:40 John Daub: Oh go ahead. No, you open up yours. Yeah, you open it up. Okay, good. I give it a nice... and it looks like cola bubbles. Maybe they made a mistake and they just made it coffee. Yeah, it smells like Coke. Smells like Coke. Okay. Ah yeah, but there is a hint of coffee too. Alright, I'm gonna look at the color of it so I'm gonna do something really bad: I'm just gonna spill some. Well it's raining, it's okay. Alright, well it's really... it looks like cola. Is it coffee or cola? I can't tell. No, but it smells a little bit like coffee too.
00:08:22 Jennifer: Oh yeah, now I smell it.
00:08:25 John Daub: So shall I... hold on, clean the pavement. Thank you Linda. I rub it in. It's been raining all week so it's going to rain again. Alright, so cheers!
00:08:34 Jennifer: Cheers!
00:08:37 John Daub: Let's try this. It's coffee with the cola bubbles. Don't you think?
00:08:49 Jennifer: Okay wait, it's registering. Okay I got it now.
00:08:56 John Daub: Alright, the initial taste and the smell was all Coca-Cola. Initially first was all Coke, and now the coffee is hitting you. The after flavor is coffee.
00:09:06 Jennifer: Right. The initial flavor is Coke, yes but it doesn't last long. It's more and you know the coffee remains on the tongue.
00:09:18 John Daub: You want mine? Like the coffee part, hate the cola part. Yeah, I think it is Coca-Cola. When you get the bubbles and the carbonation, it's 100% Coca-Cola taste. After the bubbles dissipate and you're drinking it, the after flavor whatever's left is coffee. And that's sort of cool except... it's not bad. I'd rather just have the coffee. I just want the coffee. If you're a coffee lover, don't have this because you'll be so disappointed.
00:09:51 Jennifer: But I'm a coffee lover so I don't want to have this. But if it were just you know like... you want to have some sparkling thing, it's fun. I just want some bubbles. It's sweet.
00:10:13 John Daub: You'd rather have a Starbucks?
00:10:15 Jennifer: Oh yes, there is no doubt about this. And I don't like to drink stuff out of cans, even Coca-Cola. Coca-Cola is good when it comes out from the bottle, the glass bottles like when we were born, right?
00:10:36 John Daub: Oh I got a big burp. What are you doing? That's why you were shooting me and not us. You don't burp when you drink coffee do you? That was a big... burp. In Japanese we call burp geppu, right? Geppu is burp in Japanese. It was a big geppu. And many glass bottles of Coca-Cola. I should have brought a glass.
00:11:04 Jennifer: No, I want to eat Shake Shack.
00:11:06 John Daub: Shake Shack? Oh you need a burger? We can think and then in 10 minutes we find out what it is. Maybe a Shake Shack who knows, with a bottle of cola. How do I get rid of this? Oh there's another vending machine. One of the great things about vending machines in Japan is usually there's a place for you to deposit your empty cans.
00:11:38 Jennifer: I bought that for you. That's a test. This is like work, you know, like testing products. This is my job, right? So you give it a thumbs down?
00:11:46 John Daub: It's a sideways because you like the coffee. No but be honest.
00:11:54 Jennifer: No, personally I don't like this kind of stuff. But if... and I don't like to mix things. I like it straight, right? Like whiskey, I don't want to mix it with cola for example. Just an example.
00:12:08 John Daub: Yeah. Watch out, there's a taxi. If you like Sprite, Coca-Cola, fizzy sparkling beverages. So Jennifer is a purist. Asher Paul Tan is writing Jennifer is a purist. And if you like sweet things, then try this, you will like it.
00:12:28 Jennifer: I found a very pure restaurant behind you. It's pure.
00:12:34 John Daub: Do that thing again, that was awesome. I don't even remember the taste of the chicken wings. Oh yeah, no no, I go there for the wings. That's what I go there for because we had the shooting at Hooters. Let's shoot. Oh yeah, we did NHK. Did you work at the NHK at the Hooters with me? The Tokyo Eye? Of course I was, we were best friends at the time. Still we are best friends.
00:13:04 John Daub: Okay, so I met her doing Tokyo Eye, NHK program like 8 years ago, wasn't it? It was like our first one was Tokyo Skytree versus Tokyo Tower. And that's when I taught her how to say double quarter pounder with a good American accent. It's very important to order with an American accent. And then the next shoot we did was the Hooters one. I went to Hooters on my birthday and that's the same day I met Kevin Reilly. Do you remember Kevin Reilly?
00:13:43 Jennifer: Yes, of course I do. It was the same day too, right? They were the Americans.
00:13:48 John Daub: I met Kevin Reilly at Hooters the same day I was doing the shoot with Jennifer. I'm going to put these pictures on Instagram. So if you go to the Instagram you can see some of the pictures. Give me a couple hours, I'll put the pictures of when I met Jennifer for the NHK shoot at the Hooters. And then I met Kevin Reilly the first time at Hooters the same day. But we are not going to Hooters today.
00:14:10 Jennifer: Oh really? Why not? The wings are so good.
00:14:18 John Daub: Hey guys, don't you want to see something more Japanese? Maybe? I'm sure they want to see Japanese Hooters restaurant. Well, dump your cola out, get rid of it.
00:14:34 Jennifer: It's too sweet, sorry. For the fishes. For the fish.
00:14:42 John Daub: This is going to be really caffeinated fish. They will be super high on caffeine. Okay. So Jennifer gives it a sideways thumbs.
00:14:52 Jennifer: Thumbs sideways.
00:14:56 John Daub: I'm giving it a thumbs down. Actually, no it's okay, just put it in there. So if always next to the vending machines, 99% of the time there is a place to recycle. Very good Japan.
00:15:15 Jennifer: No no no, I was just wondering what's next. Maybe you need something stronger.
00:15:18 John Daub: Oh yeah. Yesterday was a detox day, I didn't have one drop of alcohol, so that's why I'm pretty cranky today. That's part of Jennifer's job is to drink, right? Balance is the key. Don't drink every day. Her job—and go to her Instagram page and follow her on Instagram. You're going to be completely bombarded by cats, dogs, food and wine. And not in that order, they just come randomly.
00:15:49 Jennifer: If you want to make me fall, go and see my Instagram. You will know the key points: food, alcohol, nyan cats, wang dogs.
00:16:03 John Daub: This area of Shinjuku is really famous because it's near where the government tower is. The really famous architecture here is pretty cool. I lost Jennifer, she's checking out the food. Are you checking out the food?
00:16:18 Jennifer: Yes I am.
00:16:19 John Daub: Thank you so much for the super chats. I'm going to go back and answer them all at the end of this live stream. But this area is famous for this chachan. You can see the government building. So we are in central Tokyo, this is city hall, this is where the mayor is. It's actually a twin tower, so there's two towers here. But down this alley we only get one, and this alley is famous. It's a really pretty alley. Jennifer is looking at the food. It's pretty cheap here.
00:16:58 Jennifer: Yeah, but yakitori I think of like dinner. Yakitori with beer.
00:17:03 John Daub: I know. What time is it? It's 2pm and she wants yakitori and beer.
00:17:12 Jennifer: Guilty.
00:17:15 John Daub: No okay, we can... Jennifer, do you want to look for something else? Yeah sure. Let's walk back to the station. Teishoku might be nice. You know what? Let's do a second live stream. Let's find some place nice. I'm going to feed Jennifer. This live stream will be affectionately called "Shinjuku Feed Jennifer."
00:17:35 Jennifer: Feed Jennifer. You know that if we meet everybody, you have to request this to John: Feed Jennifer. Hashtag Feed Jennifer. Some of you do that request: John to feed me. Thank you so much for that. My eternal gratitude. Please keep on asking him to feed me.
00:17:57 John Daub: Check it out. So this is they have all these UFO catchers. I made a show about UFO catchers. Oh look, it's different. Yeah, they got some cool stuff in here. Oh this going to be really hard to pick up. You see they put a wall here, you can't get it out. Oh look there's Pikachu. These look so easy to get out, but I know you can use the topple method but it's no way you're going to get it out. I studied this, these are all set up. Oh look the Christmas. It's better to go and buy one straight. Oh they're cute. That looks like Totoro. I thought that was Totoro. Oh they almost had it. Oh. Did you get one? No. Oh no.
00:19:22 John Daub: I need some gasoline. Yeah me too. I gotta feed her. We're going to go look for a restaurant. This livestream is going to continue, so stay tuned. They give us like 15-20 minutes to find a place, but we'll be continuing this. Also I want to promote her livestream. Check out Peter's new channel. Peter has a brand new channel. And check out this new video I just posted. It's a spy story. It's not doing so well actually. It's called Fukushima Spy Story Mission Naginata. And it's actually kind of fun. So check it out. Peter is the narrator. Great video. This is making her really happy. So before we leave I want to answer all of the Super Chats. I'm so thankful. I didn't see the ones from the first stream so I apologize for that. I will answer them in the description. So I'll answer all of your Super Chat questions that you have here.
00:20:30 John Daub: Kanpai. Yeah, Roji, kanpai, good. Sunnyville NZ, New Zealand: Go for it, John! Thanks for covering one of the cans. Oh, thanks for the cover. Two random crap three: Sorry for the last stream cut. Yeah, that kind of... we started this streaming before but it just died. I don't think it was the app, maybe it was just a signal. Shinjuku has a lot of people. Notchabron, hello! Thank you for supporting me always. She loves Notchabron. Von also, Von's here: Are you going to feed Jennifer? Von, I am. Is it a place? No, it's a name, sorry. And I ate Cheerios, two dollars, thank you. And Von again. Oh, new hashtag from Von: What is John going to feed Jennifer? Question mark, that's a long tag. We'll answer in about 20 minutes.
00:21:28 John Daub: Once again, this is famous for the electronics store called Yodobashi Camera. This is the Higashikan. You can see behind me, Higashikan. It's all backwards but it's also got really retro-looking neon lights which I really like. They're not blinking in reality, this is just a Tokyo blink. All the lights blink here because of the frequency. But I love this area of Shinjuku because it's really retro-looking. It probably hasn't changed since the 1980s. Right. It's been like this. Boom, there's your thumbnail. It's such a beautiful shot right here, all the signboards for the restaurants.
00:22:13 John Daub: So in the description, I'm going to put a link to Jennifer's Instagram. I'm going to put a link to Peter's new channel. And I'm going to put a link to the Fukushima spy video. Please definitely check that out. I'm just going to put a bunch of links in there. And then I'll put a link to the Fukushima spy video. I'll link a Google map so you know where this location is. And if you want to try the Coke...
00:22:35 Jennifer: No, try it. I mean if you're a Coke lover, just try this thing. It's interesting. It's drinkable. And I don't like you know this kind of different funny things, but it's okay. It's good to try once. I'll never try it again.
00:23:01 John Daub: I didn't want to take all the sugar. Now you got to find it. It's not in every vending machine. Here's one: you have regular coffee but there's no Coke Coffee. So it's not in every vending machine, you have to really search it out. This is a Pepsi vending machine. You have to really search it out. And here's the—this is a tea one. No Coke Coffee. You have to really search out that name. Alright, we're going to cut one time for a second live stream. We're going to go find some food. I gotta feed Jennifer. Check out the links in the description. And see you in about 5, 10 minutes. 15, check it out.
00:23:43 John Daub: Bye everybody.
