Summary

ASIA SPELLING CUP 2017 my emcee job

Overview

In this special episode, John Daub travels to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to serve as the Master of Ceremonies (MC) for the 5th annual Asia Spelling Cup 2017. Unlike his typical Japan-focused content, this video captures the high-energy atmosphere of an international English spelling competition featuring contestants from Malaysia, China, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines. John live streams the event, interacting with online viewers while managing the stage, explaining rules, and keeping the young contestants relaxed.

The video provides a behind-the-scenes look at the logistics of running a large-scale academic competition, from last-minute judge preparations to the tension of the final rounds. John showcases the impressive talent of non-native English speakers spelling complex vocabulary under pressure. The event is held at the InterContinental Kuala Lumpur, with prizes including cash and iPads, and a post-competition trip to the iconic Petronas Towers for the winners.

Throughout the broadcast, John balances his duties as emcee with engaging his YouTube and Facebook live audience, offering commentary on the stress of the job, the strictness of the rules, and the joy of seeing children succeed. It is a unique glimpse into John's versatility as a presenter and his commitment to educational events in Asia, even outside of Japan.

00:00:03 John Daub: Hey everybody! I'm in Kuala Lumpur right now. I'm going to be emceeing an event, the Asia Spelling Cup. The Asia Spelling Cup is also on Facebook. They're doing a beautiful live stream. So if you want to go over and take a look at the Facebook live stream, you can. I'm going to go on stage. There are contestants from Malaysia, China, Indonesia, and Thailand. They're all going to be here for the event. I've got my necktie on and I'm looking pretty good. I'm feeling pretty good thanks to four cups of coffee. Here's the event. Very cool. Wish me luck.

00:01:01 John Daub: There's always last-minute preparations. The judges are kind of panicked right now. It's okay. Here's the ballroom. We're in the InterContinental Kuala Lumpur. They're the judges. They're panicking. But I would too because it's sort of scary to do this type of work. Can you see the stage okay? Don't make fun of me. I'm doing my best here. Before you start making fun of me, just remember I'm up here for you. Alright, let's do this thing. It's supposed to start at 9. It's 9 a.m. here in Kuala Lumpur. It was supposed to start already. We're already kind of late. See, the InterContinental water is even better than the tap water.

00:02:08 John Daub: Okay. Can you say it again? Last year, don't go right away. Wait for dim the lights. Oh, dim the lights. So they would dim the lights and then you start. I'll come and tap you on the shoulder to do it. Don't worry. By the time I walk off the stage, it'll be enough time for me to touch you on the shoulder. What do I say? I say go? Thank you for the Super Chat. You can sit. Either you can sit on that side or you can sit here. Up to you. Yeah. They're preparing the PowerPoint for me. I'm John, everybody. You're on, students too. Are you live streaming? Yeah, I'm live streaming. This is David. Hey, hello. Yeah, we got 260 people watching. I just started. Oh, great.

00:03:05 David: John.

00:03:15 John Daub: It's like this. Look at this. This is the one. Oh, no. It's too far. This one. That's David. Hey. Hey. Hey. Hi. Hi. Hi. Hi. You're on the students. Hello. Hello. Hey, this is my spy suit from the Fukushima spy story, by the way. Inside story.

00:04:51 John Daub: You ready? No, no, no. Just making sure. Okay. You ready? We're still here. How you doing everybody? 290. So there's like a hundred to two hundred people here. There's like two hundred people waiting for me. But I can't do it yet. They're all waiting for me. Am I stressed? Kind of stressed. I'm never really stressed. I'm just having fun. That's how the comments are coming in. Yeah. If you are going to try it, get used to it! I'm just going to try it. What's the difference? Gymnasts' preparation for the Olympics. Serious business. Spelling bee. Kyuuko Asia Spelling Cup. Kyuuko Music. Kyuuko Asia, the 5th year!

00:07:11 John Daub: I always had trouble spelling MC. Is it just the letters MC for Master of Ceremonies or is it spelled E-M-C-E-E? Well, I'm glad I'm not the one out there spelling it. Today, I'm just the MC. So let's look at last year's highlights for the Asia Spelling Cup 2016 in Bangkok. And we have with us here in the perspective from the studio, one of the finalists, one of the 50 finalists, Elevio Vincenzo here from [inaudible]. Hello. Hello. They didn't get my joke. This is a video of last year's event. I MC'd that event too.

00:11:55 John Daub: I want to go over some of the rules that are very essential to the Asia Spelling Cup. The first thing is the timer. The timer's job is to show you the colors and let you know how much time that you have. Each contestant will have two minutes to spell the word. When you start at the two-minute mark, you're going to see green. At one minute and 15 seconds in, you're going to see yellow. And at 30 seconds left, before you have to answer the word, you're going to see red. That means you better hurry up and finish spelling that word. If you have any questions on the rules, they're all printed online. You'll be able to find them there, or we have a copy at the judges' table. Don't be afraid to ask if it's something you're unsure of. Most of the rules are pretty much the same.

00:12:41 John Daub: We're going to do a sample of how you should spell the word for this particular contest. Pronouncer, can I have a word, please? Your word is pardon. Could you repeat the word, please? Pardon. Could I have it in a sentence, please? The judge pardon. P-R-D-E-N. Pardon. Incorrect. If you make an incorrect spelling, please return back into the crowd. If you make a correct spelling, you can return to your seat for the next round. Let's try one more, shall we? Your word is bamboo. Bamboo. Is that the best you can do? Bamboo. Can I have the origin of the word, please? The origin is b-a-m-b-o-o. Alright, everybody.

00:14:22 John Daub: You have to first pronounce the word. Bamboo. B-A-M-B-O-O bamboo. So make sure you pronounce the word, spell the word, and then pronounce the word again. Is that clearer, everybody? OK? If you start to spell the word, this is really important. If you start to spell the word, you can't go back and correct yourself. So please take your time. If you go back and correct yourself, that will be incorrect. Okay? You're going to hear that sound. So please take your time. You have two minutes to answer the word. Please take your time and relax up here. That's the golden rule. We're here to have fun. You've worked really hard to get to this point. Enjoy it. Take your time and relax. And if you get the word right, don't be afraid to celebrate. Just don't kick anybody on stage, okay? All right.

00:15:43 John Daub: Today we have some amazing prizes for you. Third place is going to receive an iPad. Yeah, that's really cool. Second place is $1,000. And first place is $2,000. This goes to the primary and the secondary contestants. Awesome. At 4:40, lunch is going to be at 1 o'clock to 2 o'clock. And then at 4:45, we're going to have a winners' trip to the Petronas Towers where we'll be taking some amazing pictures. And then we'll have a winners' dinner after that. So it's going to be an amazing day for everybody. Before we begin, and here's the schedule up here, before we bring our primary contestants up onto the stage, I want to thank everybody for working really hard to get to this point. I know that a lot of you have traveled a long way, some of you from Indonesia, from China, from Malaysia, from the Philippines, and from Thailand. Thank you very much for making the trip, for working hard. This morning I saw a lot of really happy faces and that makes me really happy. I want you to really enjoy this event. At the end of this event, we're going to bring the winners and all of the contestants on stage for a picture. And then after that, every parent is going to have enough time to make sure that they get a picture of their child on stage because we want you to really have those good memories of this event for the future. So thank you very much. Let's start by bringing up the primary contestants. They're going to be in the middle.

00:17:07 John Daub: Right now you're going to give them an opportunity to bring the children onto the stage. The number that you have corresponds with the chair. Front row contestants. There you are. Come up on the stage. You too. High five. Please stand up. Shake it out a little bit. Relax. See, everybody's face is so nervous. Everybody feels the same way. Don't worry. That's right. Woo! 02:08:21 John Daub: Any questions you might have. We were adhering to very strict rules for this competition, so that's what we followed. I apologize if there's any questions about that. But what we do is we have a winner, and we have a second place and a third place and finalist, so thank you very much. We're gonna take a break for 10 minutes, so please have some coffee outside and come back in in about 5 minutes if you can. We're running short on time. Thank you very much.

02:09:12 John Daub: Do you have any battery left here? Am I on? Alright, so that... I'm gonna turn the camera around. For the 371 people who are watching, that's what I'm here to do. I'm here to emcee this event, and wow. I wasn't really happy that the last contestant ended on a technicality where the judge made the... let it go. But because all of the parents are here and we have to be consistent, if you start to spell and you go back and then... We can't let that slide because it is a finals. This is the contest. We have prizes. You wanna see? We have prizes. Check it out. There's like cash at stake here. Check it out. I mean, like, we have checks here. This is like cash here. It's a thousand dollars. So I mean, like, it is cutthroat. It really is. And I didn't... I felt bad for that one kid because I was rooting for both of them. But, I wanted to see them maybe go one or two rounds deeper. But, you know, if you forget something... If you don't take your time, you have two minutes. Okay? Yeah, it's actual money. Actually, I'm not getting... I'm doing this as a volunteer, to be honest with you. I just wanted to let you know. I'm like, yeah, I'd like to have some of that. But it's for the kids here. And they know the rules and we're pretty clear on it. Yeah, the yakuza are merciless. I'm not gonna let it slide. You have to stick with the rules because if you do that, then you can't be wrong. If you let one slide and you let another one go, then you're gonna have more discrepancy and more problems. You have to be very consistent. And this is the finals. That's why we're here. And that's why these contestants are here. We didn't do any... We didn't do much practice until yesterday. So, when I came into Kuala Lumpur. So we didn't have... We didn't have as much connection. This is a new staff judging this year. I think they did a really good job. I saw the pronouncers were... Oliver, some of the people were calling your pronunciation gangster. Very... I don't know what to make of that. Is that good or bad? I don't know. Well, where are you from, first of all?

02:13:59 Pronouncer (Oliver): United Kingdom.

02:14:03 John Daub: So, everybody who is making fun of his pronunciation, please leave the poor man alone. Gangster? That's... Gangster. I don't know whether to be proud of that or... Yeah. I was reading the comments like man he's gangster. I thought this is my live stream there's 400 people watching right now. 400 people? I'm not a gangster England United Kingdom. I'm not a gangster I'm normal. I have no guns. This is your first time as a pronouncer. Actually one of the most stressful things. Origin of word Arabic that one really got me. Alcazar yeah. Yeah Alcazar. I thought like Disney you know cause it's in some Disney films. Origin of word Disney you can't say that. But you did a good job. What you should do you should keep your lapel mic on go to the toilet. I almost did that how bad was it it was pretty bad. I had the mic on and I went outside. The kid wasn't phased. None of them were phased the parents weren't phased. It's hard when you have to adhere to the strict rules of law. This is one of the most stressful things. You just have to let it go. There's actually a secondary event I'm gonna push the Facebook live stream. If you wanna watch and keep watching it now. Where in the UK? North Buckinghamshire. No not where the Queen lives. Yeah Tornado did you hear tomato or tornado? I don't know I wasn't listening. That's somebody else's. What did? They were watching on the edge of their seats. Did people hear tomato or tornado? Tomato damn. What was the word? It was tornado. Oh really? Yeah. But he thought tomato a lot of people thought tomato. Got it tomato. Tornado yeah. We'll be better in the second round. Better be. Thank you. Alright. Everybody did a really good job I'm proud of the team. You know this is the fifth annual one. This is my fourth as MC. And yeah every time we go overtime. But in the end the kids have so much fun. And that's why we're here. We're here for the kids. And who've been studying and working really hard. None of them are native speakers. All of them have been speaking another language first. I think it's incredible that they're doing an English spelling bee. Which is mind blowing that these kids can spell so well. I'm gonna end the live stream. Go to the Facebook page. And check out. If you wanna see more. Here it is. Just search Asia Spelling Cup. And if somebody finds it go into the YouTube. And just write the link into the YouTube. So people can keep watching it. I have to go to the restroom. Before we start the next round. So I wanna say goodbye to everybody. And thank you so much for watching. We have four hundred and eleven people watching. This live stream will be available. So you can watch it later on. Kind of relive the moments. And check to see if they got it right. I think there were some discrepancies. But overall everybody did a really excellent job. So I'll be in Kuala Lumpur until tomorrow morning. I leave here at eight AM to go back to Tokyo. Just a very quick thirty hour trip here. To do this event. Because I really love doing it. And then I'm going straight to Fukushima. To do a location shoot there. So there's no rest. Rest for the bold right. Just keep on going. I'll be on another live stream in Malaysia. Where am I? I'm moving so fast. I forget where I am. I'll be doing one more live stream in Malaysia. We have a meet up. There's only five people signed up on the Facebook. Which is still really cool. Because I just started the event. Like a couple days ago. So I'm gonna be really happy to meet the five people. Who watched the show. And I'm gonna see if they're okay live streaming. And get some Q&A with them. Because I wanna know more about Malaysia. So thank you everybody. Have a good day. Wherever you are. Good night in the world. Thank you so much for the super chats. I will answer them in the description. Give me a couple of hours. I appreciate it very very much. Bye from Malaysia. From Kuala Lumpur. Leave so soon. This broadcast has been going for an hour and forty minutes. Bye bye. I'm gonna have to eat that helium after the event. Can't let these balloons go to waste. Right? We're gonna eat some helium. Bye bye.
