Costco Japan Sushi Taste Test

Overview

In this episode, John Daub is joined by fellow American expat and friend Peter von Gomm for a live stream taste test at Costco Makuhari in Chiba Prefecture. The primary focus is evaluating the quality of Costco's Kirkland Signature sushi in Japan compared to what is available in United States locations. John selects a variety pack featuring maguro (tuna), salmon, and negitoro (minced tuna), noting that Japanese Costco sushi comes wasabi nuki (no wasabi) to accommodate children.

While waiting for Peter to secure pizza from the food court, John explores the surrounding area, highlighting the unique safety culture of Japan where belongings can be left unattended without fear of theft. He discusses the history of the Makuhari area, the presence of IKEA and AEON Mall, and the nearby Makuhari Messe convention center. The pair eventually reunite to compare the sushi against Costco's famous pizza, discussing rice quality, fish freshness, and the overall value.

The conversation extends beyond food into cultural observations, including line etiquette, table saving customs, and the respect for personal property in Japan. Peter also promotes his own YouTube channel, discussing his background in voice work and design. The episode serves as both a food review and a glimpse into the expat community and daily life in the Chiba region.

Timeline / Chapters

Japan Travel Tips

  • Costco Membership: You need a membership card to enter and shop at Costco in Japan.
  • Food Court: The Costco food court offers affordable meals like pizza slices (around $3) and coffee.
  • Safety: It is generally safe to leave belongings unattended in public areas like Costco parking lots in Japan, though common sense should still be used.
  • Wasabi: Sushi sold in Japanese supermarkets and Costco often comes wasabi nuki (no wasabi) inside; packets are provided separately.
  • Etiquette: Line cutting is heavily frowned upon; people queue orderly even for food courts.
  • Timing: Visit during cooler weather if planning to eat outside, as there are limited seating areas outside the food court.

Japanese Language & Culture Notes

  • Wasabi Nuki (わさび抜き): Means "without wasabi." In Japan, sushi for mass consumption often excludes wasabi inside the roll to accommodate children and personal preference.
  • Table Saving: It is common practice in Japan to save a table by leaving personal items (bags, laptops) on it while ordering food. This reflects a high-trust society.
  • Line Etiquette: Queuing is strict. Cutting in line will result in silent but intense social pressure (staring).
  • Tekarasu (カラス): Japanese word for crows. John refers to them as "Toby" based on a past experience in Hokkaido.
  • Itadakimasu (いただきます): Phrase said before eating, meaning "I humbly receive."
  • Kampai (乾杯): Cheers. Used when drinking or celebrating together.

Food & Drink Guide

  • Costco Sushi Variety Pack: Contains maguro (tuna), salmon, and negitoro. Price approx. $20 for large pack. John rates salmon highest, negitoro second, maguro average.
  • Costco Pizza: Cheese pizza slice. Consistent quality with US Costco. Warm and cheesy.
  • Costco Coffee: Dark roast beans available for purchase; food court coffee is Starbucks-quality.
  • Pretzel Bread: Purchased by Peter. Large quantity, good for sharing.
  • Gnocchi & Kitty Cheese: Mentioned as part of the shopping haul.

People

  • John Daub: Host. American expat living in Japan for 30+ years. Curious, conversational, knowledgeable about culture.
  • Peter von Gomm: Guest. American friend of John, voice actor, and YouTuber. Provides commentary on sushi and promotes his channel.
  • Toby (crow): Referenced by John as the namesake for all crows he encounters, originating from a crow in Hokkaido.
  • Toby (viewer): A live stream viewer named Toby who super chats; distinguished from the crow.

Key Takeaways

  • Costco Japan sushi is visually impressive and better than convenience store sushi, though fish quality varies by type (salmon > tuna).
  • Japanese Costco sushi excludes wasabi internally, allowing customers to add their own.
  • Japan's safety culture allows for leaving belongings unattended in public spaces like Costco parking lots.
  • Food content performs significantly better on YouTube than cultural content, according to John's analytics.
  • Peter von Gomm is launching his own YouTube channel focusing on voice work and reading.

00:00:03 John Daub: This looks so good, doesn't it? Kirkland sushi. That looks really good. But you know, I got my eye on this over here. So we're going to try one of these sushis and eat it outside. Right now we're picking which one. Japan is known for having really good sushi and Costco makes some pretty darn good sushi here in Japan. But we're gonna see if it's any better than the ones in the United States Costco. Which one do you like, this variety? It's got kind of the maki roll. These are some huge. This is wasabi nuki (no wasabi). Yeah, it's got some inside here. Okay, all right, let's try this one. Yeah, this one is too big for two people and this one looks the best. It's got really good maguro (tuna), but it's not... I don't know, it's kai (squid). The quality looks pretty good and I don't like ika (squid). Yeah, chewing on it, I don't get this one, white rubber band. We'll get this one. So we're gonna try this sushi Peter has doubt. Alright, let's take it outside. Sushi time.

00:01:40 John Daub: Okay, without wasabi and I asked why they don't put wasabi on the sushi. And it's because a lot of kids don't like wasabi and it's too much of a bite for them like these kids here, so they don't add it inside of it. They put it on the outside so you can put as much wasabi as you like on it, but it comes wasabi nuki (no wasabi). I like wasabi and wasabi nuki is the safe way. Now before I go into the tasting, Peter for us this is not enough food and we're gonna get sick of eating the sushi, so we turned to American cuisine or what was Italian, now American pizza. Peter's now waiting in line for pizza. We're gonna go bother Peter in line and then we're gonna come back and eat this. This is Japan, you could leave your stuff outside safely without anybody taking it. I'm gonna leave the sushi and the stuff here. This is what I bought and every time I come to Costco the amount of money I spend is about 50% more than I thought I was going to spend. It just ended up being almost about $75, $80 for this. So I got these organic oats, of course coffee to fuel my editing. Everybody gets this, the Pink Himalayan Salt. And Peter wanted these pretzel breads. I don't know, it's Peter. These are always good, these gnocchi. And yeah, you gotta go with the kitty cheese. It's always cheaper here. And the sushi.

00:03:32 John Daub: In Japan, this is normal behavior. Okay, let's go find Peter and see how he's faring in line. So this Makuhari Costco is surrounded by an AEON Mall now. Would I, if I was in the U.S., I'd probably be worried that someone would snake my stuff, but in Japan nobody's going to take it. Now this Costco was built back in 2007, I want to say. It's about 10 years old. This is the first Costco in Japan and there was nothing here. And now they've built an amazing shopping mall all around it. This is an AEON Mall and it literally wraps around the Costco. Costco is in the middle of it all. There it is and it literally wraps around it. And Peter, Peter's waiting in line here. There he is. Where's the pizza, dude? All right, we got to wait a little bit longer. I think it's about five minutes. Here's the menu for the Costco bar. I'm getting this, the pizza. It's about $3 a slice. And these are really good. But I'm just going to stick with the sushi and the pizza.

00:05:44 John Daub: The line is always long. Now Peter's deep in the line. In Japan people are pretty good with lining up. They are in the U.S. too, well not quite like this though. So Costco to make it look not so long, they've snaked the line now like Disney World. So you have to stand really orderly. I'm just going to tell Peter where I am and then I'm going to go to the sushi. Peter. So it looks like it's going to be like five minutes from here. This back and forth thing, it's part of the Disney. It's part of the attraction of Costco. Yeah, it's almost like Disneyland, isn't it? A little bit. Where's all the plush toys walking around? So I'm going to go with the sushi and just wait over there. Are you watching the live stream? Yes I am and I'm going to chat. I'm going to be over at the sushi. Take care. He knows where I am because he's watching just like you are.

00:07:16 John Daub: So I was just saying this Costco opened up about 10 years ago. There's nothing else here. Ikea was the first massive chain to come in this area. Ikea is one stop that way and that came in 2006. I remember I was one of the first people to go to Ikea. I was like wow, Ikea is here, I can buy furniture because it's pretty crazy expensive here. And so that opened and then a year later Costco opened and I instantly came here and gravitated to the culture of warehouse food. That's when Japan they say started to get a little bit bigger around the waist, but I can't say anything. Costco still now it's starting to get more popular, but it was mostly expats that were here. Some foreigners that were married and had Japanese wives or husbands, they would always come here with the family. It's a pretty good place to feed the family. The food is really good. So I'm sitting on the side here and that's where we're going to do the sushi unboxing. Just bear with me for another couple of minutes. I mean it would be a little bit rude to start to eat without Peter a little bit, but I'm famished. The cart's still there. Somebody is going to take my cart and sushi.

00:09:08 John Daub: Peter if you're watching this, can you bring a fork or chopsticks from the restaurant? Cause we don't have any chopsticks, it doesn't come with it. I was thinking this was like a bento but it's not. So Peter's not here but I'm going to open it up and I'm not going to eat it, don't worry, but I'm going to open it up and do some image shots. It's a nice feeling. Oh man, oh yeah. It's got that sushi smell, you have some of the vinegar that's associated rice vinegar. That looks pretty good for Costco. I did not expect this to look as good as it does. They are using I think that's Koshihikari rice. So that's high quality rice. This is akami (lean tuna) just regular maguro. This looks like negitoro (minced tuna with green onions). It comes with a pack of ginger. Here's the wasabi, two packs of wasabi. That's usually kind of chemical tasting though, it's not as good as the raw wasabi and two packs of soy sauce. I put wasabi and soy sauce on my sushi. Not everybody does that. I do it because you can eat it any way you like.

00:10:40 John Daub: Now these maki (rolled sushi), they have salmon in it which looks surprisingly good quality. And this maguro looks like it has negitoro and akami in there. There's no otoro (fatty tuna). The salmon looks surprisingly good as well. I don't know if it's farmed or not. The whole price of this, yeah it does. It's definitely better than 7-Eleven sushi. Although 7-Eleven sushi in Japan is probably like really good sushi in the United States. I haven't had yet good sushi in the United States that wasn't like in New York City or in a big city. But this on the visual check it's impressive. And in the beginning of this livestream you will see the selection of sushi that they had. The maguro selection was... the maguro sushi that they had that was about $20 was extremely... the eye test passed. It looked like it had otoro, chutoro (medium fatty tuna). It was a little pricier but it was because they had the real otoro maguro, the really expensive fatty tuna.

00:11:58 John Daub: Noss abroad has a question, is the wasabi real or colored horseradish? So it's a good question. Let's see here. This wasabi is definitely not real but it's not horseradish though. Kaneka Corporation, so it's a Tokyo company. Yeah it's wasabi in there but they also added in some other stuff, sorbitol and saccharin, histamine. There's some not so good stuff in here but it's good enough. She does not work at Costco and she's returning the carts. People are really nice. It's one reason that Japan is such a special place to me. People are very responsible, personally responsible for their stuff and they think about the greater good of the group. And that's sort of cool to see. The mother pushing seven carts and she's trying to return it so everybody else can use it. Because inside here is a place where you can eat and it's crowded on the inside and it's warmer out there, it's a little bit cool. People leave their carts outside and there's no fear of anybody stealing your stuff. I've never heard of anybody getting stolen stuff at Costco. This never has happened.

00:14:11 John Daub: I know that in the US people will take your stuff. So you have to be careful of your personal belongings. But here in Japan... I think it was Greg from Life Where I'm From made a really good video that you can save your stuff by putting your bag on the table. This is what Japanese do. They'll put their bag or their computer on the table then they'll go down to the first floor to go get an ice cream or a latte at Starbucks for example. And wait there for ten minutes and come back up and their laptop and their cell phone and their purse is still on the table. That's how they save the tables in Japan. I mean you could leave a backpack on a table and I think that in many countries it's like a bomb threat. But here in Japan that's a way to save the table. I always thought it was kind of weird. That's part of the culture. Personal belongings are highly respected in Japan. I checked in my 27-inch iMac on an air flight from ANA all the way to the other side of Japan. They really take good care of luggage here in Japan. They don't throw it, they handle it with kid gloves.

00:15:35 John Daub: I'm going to prep this up, dump the soy sauce into the thing into the plastic. It does look impressive doesn't it? It's good looking stuff. We don't have a tray so it slopes naturally to this corner. This is how we do it, this is how I roll. There's no other place to put it and I don't have chopsticks either. So I'm hoping Peter waiting in line will get some forks or something. This is the mission pizza, that's what we're doing today. So I've kind of set it up where we can start eating right away. How long is it going to take Peter? Line cutting is also a sin in Japan, it's really frowned upon. So much so that you will be stared down for line cutting. Nobody will say something to you but mostly people will just stare a hole through you and you can feel the heat. And if there's a hundred people staring at you it's so bad, you will just melt in line. You can feel the heat of staring and staring in Japan is the most powerful way to get people to subject to your will.

00:17:27 John Daub: You know like you ever take somebody's french fry while they go to the bathroom and you're waiting for them to come back and it's just sitting there and you're thinking they're not going to notice if I just take one or two french fries. This is one of those times. Itadakimasu (let's eat). We're gonna keep the maguro for Peter and we're gonna try this is the salmon. It's pretty good looking. I did wash my hands before this. Alright, get some wasabi on in there. Interesting. This is big. When I put it in my mouth like that I can tell right away it's a lot of volume. It's a lot of rice, it's a lot of fish. Usually the maki rolls are a little bit smaller but this one is big. It's really good salmon. I don't know it's farmed salmon but it's really good salmon. The rice is a little bit dry. It's not bad. And the seaweed is sort of... the way that the rice and the seaweed the place where they meet there it seems a little bit too dry for me. But high marks for the price that this costs, this is really really good. You know what would be even better? If Peter had the pizza here because I really want to eat the pizza.

00:19:31 John Daub: You know what we're going to do? We're just going to leave the sushi out like this, hopefully the birds don't take it. And I'm going to let's go see where Peter is, I can't wait that long. We're going to come back. Stay there, do not move, you're dead fish, you can't move. We're going to chase, we're going to find him. Maybe he needs help. Sometimes the quantity of food is too much, sometimes he needs help. We're going to go see if Peter needs a helping hand. Alright, he's next in line, no he's buying it right now. I see him, he's buying it right now. You see the hat? Alright, he's getting it right now. So it's just going to be a second. Very cool. So for those joining us right now we're at Costco Makuhari. We have purchased some sushi and it's surprisingly good. I kind of snaked one but Peter is getting some pizza. Tekarasu [?] (crows) I am always worried about the crows here, they are really bad nasty crows. I'm going to cut through this park. Alright I hope you're hungry because I am now famished. It's 20 minutes into this stream and Peter just got the pizza I believe and a big big big coffee. I need a big coffee. This is our picnicking spot right off of the highway.

00:21:51 John Daub: For those who have been watching this series for a long time you will know that Toby is... he's a nice fellow but he's also an impatient man and he likes to comment for me to hurry up and do stuff real fast. So we kind of dubbed him Toby (crow) because there was a crow that swept down in Hokkaido and I would throw salmon to the bears. These were like really not well-off bears, these bears really needed the food I think. And then this crow would come down swoop down and in midair imagine the hand-wing coordination required to do this would take and grab the salmon and then just fly off with it. And we named that crow Toby because he steals people's dreams and hopes. And those who have been watching these live streams for the last year know about Toby. Toby's a nice guy, he often comes in and gives super chats maybe to make up for his awful guilt or the fact that he's just a nice person. We'll never know until he comes to Japan and we meet him in person. And we're waiting for you Toby, if you're watching this we're waiting for you to make your way to Japan, you're overdue for a trip here.

00:23:16 John Daub: With that said I was hoping at the end of my Toby triad Peter would be here but he's not. He's probably fighting the crowds, I respect that. This area Makuhari is also where the Tokyo Game Show takes place. And if you've ever been to Tokyo in the autumn you know all about the Tokyo Game Show. This is where all the game makers release their shows, there are new games and stuff except for Nintendo which doesn't do that, they don't do shows. But that's over there, you can actually see let me show you the other side. I don't think Peter needs help, he's getting just two coffees. So this is Makuhari from Costco and you can see here there's the stadium. That's where the Chiba Lotte Marines play, that's the baseball stadium. And then over there that's Makuhari Messe where the Tokyo Game Show takes place. Peter is taking an unusually long period of time. Actually he went out there and started waiting in line while I was still paying for the stuff. The good thing is that it's really cool today so the sushi will not spoil at all. There's the negitoro which we're going to be eating next. I guess Peter will have that salmon. This is a mix of akami and chutoro and this is akami on what looks like Koshihikari rice and there's some salmon over there. So it's a pretty good salmon tuna mix. I think it's pretty good, I had one already and I'm going to have a second one in about one second because I'm just too hungry to wait for Peter. He's going to kill me isn't he?

00:25:24 John Daub: I'm going to try another one, this is the akami and chutoro mix. He's going to be so upset. This one's okay, don't get me wrong. The quality of the maguro is good, it's not bad. But my problem is that I want one or the other, I don't want the mix. I want akami or chutoro, I don't want them both. And they put them both together and it just doesn't sit well in my mouth. Next up is this negitoro. Now negitoro I love negitoro. It looks like they put in something else in there, some leeks, some green leaves or coriander maybe? There's a piece of cucumber in there. So we're going to get some on there. I'm looking for Peter who's still waiting in line, he totally should be here by now.

00:27:42 Peter von Gomm: Winner! Winner! Oh no! You are so dead. Why am I dead? Tomato say? Here's your coffee. You got it? It's not so hot anymore. Dude they have no chopsticks. Oh you heard my message through the live stream. I did but I got knives and forks, look at that fine cutlery. Yeah. Everything all the good stuff. I started the... I started. Sorry. I saw you started. What was I supposed to do? Not start. Well I mean a gentleman would not start. Right people? Well we're 25 minutes into a live stream and... But you're good at talking, you don't have to eat to impress these people. Oh so I put the camera on you. Alright I'll swing it the other way. Let's have a unbox... there we go. Now it's looking good, now things are looking good. The viewers have gone down. No no no. Oh Costco pizza! It's good. Oh is that mine or yours? Oh it's the one that Krill crapped on, that's yours. Oh thank you. Yeah it looks good. Nice.

00:29:19 Peter von Gomm: Sorry to keep you guys waiting but John has been really pumping up this pizza. Last night John's not somebody to beg but last night this guy was groveling. He's like please please come to Costco with me tomorrow, I'll do anything, I'll buy you pizza, I'll be your best friend. I didn't say... I didn't do that. Oh wait wait wait, you know what he said was I don't want to go to Costco, it's too far from my house, it takes over an hour or something. And I said look if you have that kind of attitude this negative it's too far attitude then you're not going to make it. What you got to do is what you have to do is look at a globe and if you look at a globe the distance is like everything is close. Yeah everything is like a molecule or a cube, it's like a grain of salt or a grain of sand. You honestly should be looking at the globe. Yeah and it spins too, it's a lot of fun. Well it's too bad I didn't do that and too bad I didn't look at the directions properly because I was thumbing through my phone and I got to my stop and I realized wait a minute is this the stop that John said to get off at? And then the doors closed and it was too late, I lost my stop. So I had to turn around, it was just a cluster. But this is a sushi unboxing and tasting. Yeah let's try it. So which one did you already have? I've had them all. Sorry. All right wait hold on. I'm going to try this is the one I'm going to have. What do you call that? It's like a negitoro. Negitoro, it's got cucumber and toro maguro, it's chives or green onions. Yeah. All right let's try it.

00:31:17 Peter von Gomm: Hey don't knock Kirkland sushi. I'm going to try it, it's pretty good. Yeah Kirkland's got game right? Kirkland's got game. Kind of falling apart there isn't it? Yeah. Mmm. And I'm most interested in the pizza. Did you show these fine folks what we bought today? Vaughn who is a female by the way, who's a chick yeah. Vaughn asks how much I'm paying you to be on these to be your friend? No. Nowhere near enough trust me. Vaughn asks how much am I paying you? Obviously not enough. I'm paying him in sushi. Here's what John... oops sorry I'm spitting out. John's this is my payment for today. John bought me this sack of pretzel bread. Look at that handsome, I mean there's enough to feed a small barn. You could have gotten more. I didn't say how much, you chose not to get more. I don't want to I can't carry more than this, this is all I can carry. That's not exactly how I put it. Well you're kind of using this voice. Yeah. Well let's try the pizza. This is sushi. Wait try some more sushi. More sushi? Okay we'll go for the pizza last, that's our dessert. Try this maguro, we haven't tried the maguro. By the way in Japan real sushi connoisseurs they actually use their hands, they don't use chopsticks. Did you wash your hands? Yeah yeah of course. That one looks a little bit mizupoi (watery) man. I'm going to go for the salmon. I just tried that. Go for the tuna please. The mizupoi tuna? Yeah you can almost see through it. Yeah it's like scotch tape. Yeah it's not the best. With maguro flavoring on it. It doesn't look like the best quality. All right let's give it a shot here but it doesn't look bad either. Just as I figured scotch tape with maguro flavoring on it. It's not good. Yeah you can tell like look when you can see through the fish to the rice below you know it's not very good.

00:33:29 John Daub: Can I see through the fish? Can I see your face through here? No. No. Can you see that? No. Oh. Open wide. All right I'll eat it. I need a redeeming chunk sushi. I'm going to go with the... it's not bad. I think for the price that you pay for this it's not bad. Yeah the salmon is good, it looks good. The salmon is very good, it's one of my faves. What's the deal with that ring of death by the way? What does that represent? What does it mean? What are you trying to say? I don't know, it represents who I am. A man of death? Actually a shout out to my friend Lynn Harris who gave this to me. It's an awesome ring. The designer is called Lori Rodkin, she's a jewelry designer in LA. Check her name out L-O-R-I Rodkin. Okay awesome designer. Yeah she gave me this ring, this is cool. Did you ever punch anybody and leave a skull imprint on their cheek or face? No not yet. So this is the Costco sushi. We've eaten the maguro, we've eaten the salmon, we've tried this. The negitoro wins for me then the salmon this and then the maguro. The maguro quality is average at best. This was sabi nuki (no wasabi) which means they didn't put any wasabi in it. They do that because they want to protect kids, kids don't like to have the wasabi in Japan. They add it separate and that's what Peter's doing. Are you making a special one? I didn't try that one. You didn't try that one? I want to hear your opinion on this. This is thank you Eric. I want to hear your opinion on this akami chutoro mix. What's akami? Akami is the red tuna. Oh okay and chutoro is in the middle and otoro is the very fatty piece. Right I like the fat ones. You're going too fast. Show us what you got there. Okay all right okay put a little bit of wasabi on it. Well I made a smiley face kind of. You did very inadvertently Hannibal Lecter-looking smiley face. Okay go ahead let me just fix his nose, get a nose job on this sushi. All right here we go a little better. Yeah all right. Just eat it now will you? Don't play with your food. There's mothers out there going how dare you play with your food, you're setting an awful example for kids around the world. Mmm.

00:35:58 Peter von Gomm: Well I don't like to mix sushi. So the first part of the tuna was great and the other part. I'm not a fan of this. You know why? I want one or the other. It's like the black and white cookie you know? Right remember in that Seinfeld episode he ends up throwing up the two battle inside the stomach. I got that kind of feeling with this the mixture. I don't think it's good. It looks the color looks good but it doesn't mix well. No you don't that's why when I ate it I only ate one at a time. Yeah I was smart. You're not going to throw up are you? No good. If I do it'll be a projectile vomit this direction. Yeah you do the Matrix slow motion. Yeah. I've gone festive right now. We did come with Christmas hats. What? What? Oh okay yeah. Okay okay all right. So I'm going to eat this sushi and Peter's not going to put on the other hat. Well you told me not to show it. You didn't say don't say it. I didn't say anything. What are you talking about? I'm just saying that you're going to eat this sushi and Peter's not going to put on the other hat. Well you told me not to show it. Don't show me not putting on this other hat. Okay don't show me grabbing it don't show them. All right I've been do it so I can put the camera back up.

00:37:32 John Daub: Now I'm going for the Costco pizza. Hey did you get any of the spicy chili pepper stuff? The metamorphosis complete. I like the black fringe. You like it on the left or on the right? What's better right or left? You guys decide dead center between the eyes. Okay I'm doing between the eyes. Yeah that's what I'm talking. Now now you have to take the pizza down now. Now with the Christmas hat it's still relatively warm. It is still, it's still fairly warm. Costco has some amazing pizza and somehow it looks the same in the United States as it does in Japan. And they have yeah it's kind of an amazing feat. Ching ching with our pizza. Oh really? Okay here we go here we go. Kampai (cheers) to Kirkland pizza. There you go dude. Good huh? Mm nice. It's not bad. I know we don't have any you didn't get any napkins did you? I didn't want to waste one more second. You forgot the napkin? You have any tissues in that bag that Metro bag that you have there? Um I do have some wet wipes. Alright good Peter's got wet wipes. Oh wait no that's my other backpack. Thank you you're welcome arigato (thank you). So yeah pizza is not disappointing, the sushi is not disappointing. Pizza's good and actually the coffee is really good. Coffee is very good.

00:39:28 Peter von Gomm: He said that this coffee that they make here they sell here is Starbucks coffee right? They pretty much Starbucks yeah they get it up here. I don't know I don't know if they're using this one. I always buy this because coffee in Japan is like 30 or 40 percent more expensive. I like the beans this is good. The green one with the house one is also good but I like a dark roast. Always come prepared. Ho ho ho. There's one thing have you ever read the book The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy? Awesome book. There's one thing that's a takeaway from that book the guy has a towel with him at all times. So I don't have a towel I actually do have a towel in here too. I've got a towel and I've got tissue and I have some other doodads that come in handy. Can you show us everything that's in there? I could actually I really like this stuff. For keeping because I do voice work as some of you know I bought this when I was in Hong Kong and it's like a mentholatum for your sinuses. I'm sure you know it looks like a marble bag but it's not. A tiger balm in here you know this stuff? Wow yeah this stuff's great you know that? You put that on your in your mouth? No my nose my nose oh. Just put some of my pipe right here and it keeps the sinuses clear. That's what gives the Nintendo Switch game ARMS Spring Man that extra SPRING right. You put the tiger balm in your nose when you did Spring Man. At the audition right you did not and that's why I got the gig. I auditioned to be Spring Man he won just said I came in a very close third.

00:41:40 Peter von Gomm: Oh and look at this John introduced this to me. Oh I did. I just got this yesterday it's like an early stocking stuffer and I'm going to be using this for my my channel which some of you have subscribed some of you may not have yet but I'd be much obliged if you did. We've got 600 subscribers already I'm so psyched about that. But I'm going to be using this so the audio works better and some of my book reads and other stuff. So what's the name of your channel? Peter von Gomm yeah just my name Peter von Gomm. I think I put it we'll put it in the description yeah. It used to be Peter von Gomm Reads right but you changed it to just your name yeah so. It's like a self-titled album basically self-titled album right. But yeah it's a lot of fun doing it I hope those of you who have seen have enjoyed it. John's my mentor he's given me lots of good ideas and support. Not really I'm just saying that because he's sitting there. It's a good team. When I when I need some help with audio or anything in the narrator like the voice world I ask him because nobody knows more about this world than him. And when he has any other questions about life or when I want to be shot down in a ball of flames I give old JD a call. I'm there for him I always come through I always come through when he needs to be knocked down a peg or two I always come through. Nah no it's a good partnership. And he's been on the show Peter's been on Only in Japan the main channel more than anybody else because every time we play Only in Japan his voice comes up in the beginning. And that way I'm on the show every time. Wait I think I hear it coming. Only in Japan. That's it that's it. So you hear that in every one and there's a new episode to the main channel coming on Tuesday tomorrow I think. So that's really cool. This is a good pizza I like it.

00:43:52 John Daub: So I hope you enjoyed this really 45 minute long sushi Costco sushi unboxing episode. I think it's interesting that Costco being an international company that it is is so consistent across the border right? The products the quality is pretty good like with the pizza. However I'm not so sure about the sushi. I think this rocks the American sushi off. I haven't tried the American Costco sushi. You have really? I have I've seen it that does not sound good. Yeah my I remember going home and my mom had it and she goes oh I thought you would miss Japan so I got some sushi. I said that's not the way to do it just let me be. I did try it it was like California rolls and it just tasted like it was frozen for too long and I don't know it was not good. Yeah this all sushi is frozen maguro is frozen but it's fresh it tastes fresh. We're in the land of sushi right? We can't go wrong even if it is frozen. You have to go to Japan to get the best sushi you can't expect to have really good sushi in the United States. Yeah although you can if you go to New York. In fact some people say that that sushi might even be better but those people are crazy.

00:45:24 John Daub: By the way I wanted to ask you guys John made this John made that awesome show about Fukushima. Is that right? Fukushima the spy episode which I thought was top notch wondering about you guys' opinion on that. I think he hit gold with that not every time doing that format obviously but occasionally I think that's a great idea very creative. But the viewership has not been as good as I expected. I expected it to be the main channel viewership is going down but the live streaming viewership is going up. I don't know. There's a kind of an inside fact in YouTube Japan for Japanese vloggers that if you want to get a lot of people to watch your show you have to do food. Alright and I like food but I can't do that every episode it gets repetitive. And I think that's not Japan that's one aspect of it. So anything cultural people don't seem to watch it on a big scale anything food I like it. Ice cream video is at 6 million views wow that's pretty crazy. A monster gyoza is at like 2 million I think incredible. Anything with food like explodes not a street food episode just past a million food explodes yeah food stuff explodes. The not a street food past a million the Osaka street food past a million everything with food in it just and then everything without food goes you know I don't know it's hard to explain but people just love food. Well I'm not a food vlogger I'm not a food vlogger but I do like to present food and the next episode is food on the main channel. It's Tottori wagyu (Japanese beef). Oh yeah that's a good one that's a good one it's a really interesting one yeah it's a pretty interesting one. You might get some haters though not everybody eats meat but I think most vegetarians are tolerant yeah people yeah that's why they're but you'd think a vegetarian wouldn't be aggressive he is yeah yeah no maybe not well they still have protein testosterone but it's a human I'm talking about the animal world lions are dangerous but the gazelle or not yeah giraffe for example so vegetarians aren't dangerous but meat eaters are I don't know they're more aggressive.

00:48:20 Peter von Gomm: There's a Costco sell blind me we can just do it let's do a third stream so they kick us out of here. This is it so I want to encourage you enough to go check out his channel he's doing some amazing stuff Peter von Gomm. I'll put a link in the description I want to try to get over a thousand subscribers his channel and he does stuff it's like a level below the stuff I do maybe. I'm doing it I'm just saying to piss him off I'm pushing I'm pushing the buttons. Hey man I'm like a constipated old faithful I'm building up a lot of steam and man you're pushing my buttons yep pushing my butt he he just he literally just started YouTubing I guess of course a couple months ago right so you know he's not used to video editing he's not used to video production you're just used to audio. So when you know that you watched his show it's really really good I think I was impressed I was impressed well. I think comes from I liked when I do something no matter what it is I'm creative type I've studied design and that's what my background is so when I do something I want to do it right and it's part of that is being a perfectionist and I which is a bad thing I think it's a good thing but it's also torturous because I don't release anything in my life unless it's as good as I can possibly do and it so it takes a little longer. But I'm working on trying to just let stuff go it's not absolutely perfect it's still okay so but yeah I'm working on my YouTube stuff and I appreciate your support John thank you and you guys as well. He's gonna be my boss in the future I bet. I already am boss he's the boss I'm the B-A-U-S boss. He's the boss nobody else can rock sweatpants and a leather jacket and a skull ring and a Christmas hat. You guys want me to model this stuff? John's been busting my cojones about my sweatpants today I like these things they're so comfortable. This is what people use in the pachinko parlors when they sit there all day got a zipper pocket see that? Dude did you even wash this? It's all nasty. Actually I think these were my pajamas last night actually I think but yeah super comfortable from Uniqlo. But hey balance it out with some nice animal skin which I like. Yeah the animal lovers are gonna love you yeah sorry sorry it's vegan it's a vegan leather vest. Nice try we can smell that fish a mile away.

00:51:25 John Daub: Speaking of fish that we can smell this sushi's not getting any younger. Which last one I'll give you the last piece because I was rude. Oh you're going for this one? Good I'm going this the last piece this is for you guys. So let me serve mine up you're gonna take yours? I need some wasabi on there too. Kirkland stuff is not bad right I actually...

00:52:24 Peter von Gomm: Why don't you go first? Want me to hold it? No we're gonna end it so thank you. Well take a bite of your sushi. Well you that's not for me this go ahead and no no you go ahead and eat it eat it do the face do the face. Good okay. Kirkland sushi it's like biting into a piece of heaven.
