Tokyo's Million LED Christmas Light Mind Melt
Tokyo's Million LED Christmas Light Mind Melt
Overview
In this festive episode, John Daub teams up with fellow American expat Peter von Gomm and Peter's son, Joji, to experience the spectacular Christmas illumination at Shiodome, Tokyo. The display features over a million LED lights with a Disney theme, creating a "mind-melting" blue winter wonderland. John documents Joji's amazed reactions, the crowds taking photos, and the immersive atmosphere created by the lights and music.
Beyond the light show, the video captures spontaneous interactions with tourists, including Henry and Matt from Australia, who share their own Japan travel experiences across Hiroshima, Kyoto, and Miyajima. John provides context on other major illumination spots in Tokyo, such as Omotesando, Marunouchi, and Shinjuku, offering viewers a comprehensive guide to seeing Tokyo during the holiday season. Japan Travel Tips
- Best Illumination Spots: Shiodome, Shinjuku Southern Terrace, Omotesando, Marunouchi (Tokyo Station), and Shibuya.
- Timing: Visit in the evening after sunset. The Shiodome event runs until Christmas Day.
- Transport: The Yurikamome line and Tokyo Monorail serve the Shiodome/Odaiba area. Use a JR Rail Pass for long-distance travel like Kyoto/Hiroshima.
- Crowds: Expect lines for photos at popular illumination spots like Shiodome.
- Christmas in Japan: Focus is on lights and illumination rather than religious observance. Christmas markets are becoming more common (e.g., Shiodome Street Fest).

00:01:03 John Daub: A little bit you can see it over there. Joji, going over there. Wait, maybe close your eyes, close your eyes, okay? We're gonna take Joji with us and he's gonna get surprised. Okay, I'm excited. I think they said there's like a million LED lights or something like this. Whoa, this is crazy. All right, all right, Joji, are you ready?
00:02:04 John Daub: Okay, open your eyes. Look at that, Joji. When Uncle John and I were kids, there was no electricity. Is that the chapel? All the people are taking pictures of this. You can line up and have your picture taken. This is pretty cool. Ah, こんにちは (hello).
00:03:14 Peter von Gomm: Where's the line? It's over here. Can you see Joji?
00:03:18 Peter von Gomm: Joji, you gonna get your picture taken?
00:03:21 Joji: Please!
00:03:26 Peter von Gomm: Joji, I can't get your face in. Do that scary face again.
00:03:36 John Daub: Alright, he's got a selfie. She's got a selfie. And Peter, they're gonna start playing Disney songs and that means YouTube's gonna block this. Let's make a quick... Hey, Bon says hi. Please treat Peter and his son to dinner. Wow. Bon, we're in Ginza. That's not enough. But we'll go get something to drink for sure. Thank you for that.
00:04:15 John Daub: This LED display here has definitely over a million of them, if not more. And if you look from the end, it seriously is mind-melting. That was my first reaction. Mind-melt. It gives a really winter wonderland feel. It makes me nauseous a little bit. It is pretty cool.
00:04:43 John Daub: Joji, what do you think?
00:04:45 Joji: Cool!
00:04:46 John Daub: Is it cool? You're blue, dude. Like a heavy blue. That's what I'm talking about. Mind-melt. Look at Joji. He's like a different... That's not normal. I'm not doing... There's no effects. Let me see. Look, Peter, there's no effect. Look. So weird, isn't it? Is that the kid you gave that... Look at my eyes. I know, your eyes are pretty freaky. This is total mind-melt. That's... Joji is like on another planet. There's some sort of strange Neptune haze. You look better in blue. It's a big improvement. Thank you. Maybe I'll just hang out here for the rest of my life.
00:05:38 John Daub: I think Joji gets the best because he's like... He's between the light. This is how they do it in Star Trek. You get what do you call it? Like transported to the next... to the outside, to another world through the... When you're between the power generators or something. Wow. But... Oh! The lights are dimming. Oh, the lights are dimming. Okay. You get normal lights. You get normal lights again.
00:06:05 John Daub: Alright, this is where YouTube totally gets rid of all the audio now. Hahaha. As I said, there might not be any audio anymore, thanks to copyright infringements of Disney Music. So, if the audio does get cut, I apologize in advance. Just enjoy the show! Okay? I mean, what do you need me to tell you about these amazing lights?
00:06:45 John Daub: So this is Tokyo Illumination. This is just like a small sampling of the lights of what they have going on in Tokyo at Christmas time. It's amazing. I know. We're totally gonna lose. They're gonna copyright this, aren't they? Well, let's stop now. Alright, just stop talking. Okay. Quickly, quickly, let's enjoy the Mind Melt Blue Lights. Joji! Come on, buddy. Go do something like dance or something. Hahaha.
00:07:10 John Daub: Joji's like a natural entertainer. Why don't you climb to the top of one of these trees like King Kong? Joji, can you climb the tree? I think they're all like sky towers. Sky trees. Oh, this is definitely gonna get copyrighted. Demonetized. Look at all the people. They're so moved. Are they moved by the music? Are they moved by the lights? Or are they just moved by being together in the same spot? What do you think? This might be... Oh, okay. It might be an original Disney song. I thought maybe it was a Japanese arrangement. No, this is original.
00:07:52 John Daub: So you can see, everybody, how close we are to the station. You just walk and then you're in this weird area. They're kind of changing over here. Let's get out of here. My mind is already melted. I don't need Disney to melt it even further. Although there's nothing wrong with Disney. So this video has been brought to you by Disney. Thank you, Disney. Ah! That's why I put mind melt in there. It's literally a million LED lights like burning your retina. Why do they have to put Disney?
00:08:31 John Daub: And now we invite you to relax. The good father. As you put him on your shoulders. You're probably in for a smoke! Smoke! And when there's smoke, there's Disney. A fire-breathing dragon. Really? There is smoke. We are the best in the world. We can't have fire in the center of the city. I love this. It's delicious. Don't bless the dishes. We are guests. We are guests. Good. Cut it. Cut it. Cut. Cut that. Oh my eyes. Did that hurt your eyes too? I know I've got my computer glasses. Oh really? It's a little awkward. I apologize for anyone who might have had retinal damage. And I apologize too. That was really bright. It just like went boom.
00:10:16 John Daub: Alright. They have a purple. Oh yeah, Joji. What did you, did you enjoy the show?
00:10:22 Joji: Yes.
00:10:24 John Daub: Yeah? Do you wish your father lifted you higher?
00:10:31 Joji: That's perfect.
00:10:33 John Daub: That's perfect. That's the type of answer we give to John when he asks questions like that. Yeah, sorry Joji. But it's not over. It's starting again. It's starting again. Let's walk around one more time, okay?
00:10:46 Joji: Yeah.
00:10:48 John Daub: Is that the fire engines are coming? I'll meet you guys in a second. Selfie. Where'd they go? I'm having problems seeing after the mind-melting effects of the Disney on lights. Where's daddy? Look at your hat, Joji. Wow. Tyler, that covers the demonetization. We're back. High five to Tyler.
00:11:30 Joji: Yeah.
00:11:36 John Daub: What's this? Oh hey, you got your sweet. That's a good idea. Right here, it has money. Oh, you got cash in there?
00:11:48 Joji: Not cash, a coin.
00:11:51 John Daub: A coin? Wow. That's 200 yen. You can buy like a drink or something. Oh, I have more.
00:12:04 Joji: Oh yeah, you do. You got like a little treasure chest going on there. Look at that.
00:12:12 John Daub: Wow, that's like a thousand yen. Wow, Joji's a rich guy.
00:12:19 Joji: No. You're rich, buddy.
00:12:22 John Daub: You're gonna buy us dinner too.
00:12:23 Joji: No.
00:12:27 Joji: You are more rich.
00:12:30 John Daub: I'm more rich? You know who's more rich?
00:12:39 John Daub: Well, Joji showed me his treasure chest and his Pokemon ball. Oh yeah? He's got like, what you got inside there?
00:12:48 Joji: A million dollars.
00:12:50 John Daub: You got a million dollars?
00:12:53 Joji: No!
00:13:00 John Daub: Oh, you got one too. Yeah, a gumball. Is that what you call these? Gumballs? No, no, no. Stabilizers. Oh, this is the other one. Gimbal, not gumball. Oh, look! We know who's buying. I know. Joji's got all the cash tonight.
00:13:11 Joji: No!
00:13:14 John Daub: He's pretty serious. He seriously does not want to pay. How many pictures can I get into? Wow! Look, my face looks like I've been in a melting biological attack. Ugh. You have to line up to get the romantic photos. He's got a better view than we do. I guess you can take your vows in the front there, but you just have to be really quick. Do it quickly. Do you have a photo? I do. And do you take... See, it's over before it even starts. As soon as the photo's over, they start the divorce proceedings.
00:14:14 John Daub: Where'd they go? Peter! Peter! Oh, there he is!
00:14:34 John Daub: Surrounded by over one million LED lights, this Shiodome Christmas illumination has been going on for five years. Alright. Alright, let's get out of here before my brain melts. Alright, thanks everybody. That was fun. Joji!
00:15:00 John Daub: Any final comments? What do you want to say to the people? The entire world is watching you right now, Joji. What do you have to say?
00:15:10 Joji: Thank you to watch me.
00:15:13 Joji: Thank you to watch me.
00:15:14 John Daub: And?
00:15:15 Joji: Merry Christmas.
00:15:18 John Daub: Merry Christmas! Ho ho ho ho!
00:15:22 Joji: We share.
00:15:28 John Daub: Always share, yeah. I like that lesson. Some lightning bolts coming out of there. What the heck are you doing?
00:15:39 Peter von Gomm: Insane, goofy, fun videos around Tokyo. Somehow I make it into some of those episodes.
00:15:45 John Daub: Yeah, yeah, yeah. So, yeah, please check it out. If you haven't already, please visit the channel.
00:15:54 Peter von Gomm: Peter von Gomm is the channel name. And Joji's in some.
00:15:59 John Daub: So you're Joji's sidekick?
00:16:02 Peter von Gomm: Yes, basically. He has all the, he gets all the looks. And actually we've got a Christmas special coming out very shortly. Uh, so please look out for that.
00:16:14 John Daub: Cool. Very special Christmas episode. Very special Christmas episode. It's almost as special as the one million LED light mind melt. What do you have in there? Did you put, oh, you got something in there?
00:16:26 Joji: Mac and cheese!
00:16:28 John Daub: Wow. How'd you do that? I didn't see you put that in there. That's amazing. Oh, hello. We're fans and we've shown up.
00:16:34 Henry: Oh, you have shown up. So you just like saw us.
00:16:36 John Daub: We saw the bell and we've shown up. Oh my gosh, hi, I'm John.
00:16:38 Henry: G'day, I'm Henry.
00:16:40 Matt: Matt.
00:16:42 John Daub: Are you okay to be on this?
00:16:44 Matt: Yeah, yeah.
00:16:46 John Daub: Alright, well welcome. That's Peter and that's Joji.
00:16:47 Peter von Gomm: Nice to meet you.
00:16:47 Matt: What's your name? Matt. This is Joji.
00:16:50 John Daub: Joji. You guys are from Australia?
00:16:54 Henry: Yeah, from Australia.
00:16:56 John Daub: Wow, what do you think of this place? It's pretty cool.
00:16:59 Henry: It's impressive because we went to the one at Shinjuku last night.
00:17:02 John Daub: Ah. And I was the one who said there's the... Right, right, the Shinjuku one. Yeah. So, come down here then. Yeah, the next place is Omotesando (upscale shopping street), which is also very nice. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Omotesando and Shinjuku, the tree-lined street, the long... Right. Is that lit up this year? That's lit up every year. They're lighting it up before Christmas happened. Because there was a span where there was no lights for a while.
00:17:24 John Daub: Tokyo is an ancient city going back millennia. And before Santa was even invented, they had lights on Omotesando. It's the Shiodome of Tokyo. Yeah. How long are you here in Tokyo for?
00:17:39 Henry: We leave tomorrow.
00:17:40 John Daub: What? Yes. We just got here. Well, you just got here.
00:17:45 Henry: No, no, we've been in Tokyo for a couple of days now, so. Well, in Japan, it's been nine days.
00:17:51 John Daub: Oh, wow. Where'd you go?
00:17:54 Henry: Takayama, Hiroshima, Osaka, Kyoto, Himeji, Miyajima.
00:18:01 John Daub: In nine days? You did all that?
00:18:03 Henry: Yeah, on a rail pass.
00:18:05 John Daub: Oh, you must be tired.
00:18:07 Henry: Yeah, a little bit, but we're hoping to get up in the next two or three days and go see the Chino Valley [?].
00:18:11 John Daub: What was your favorite place?
00:18:14 Henry: Um, I don't know, probably hiking Miyajima.
00:18:17 John Daub: Miyajima? Yeah. We actually walked up the whole way.
00:18:20 Henry: Oh, you did? Wow! We're trying to save money, but that was a good idea.
00:18:27 John Daub: They're trying to save money. Did you hear that? It was a mistake. Don't even try, man. Just let it go. Two and a half kilometers uphill. So you went to the top of Mt. Misen, right?
00:18:44 Henry: Yeah.
00:18:45 John Daub: Did the monkeys get you?
00:18:47 Henry: Of course.
00:18:48 John Daub: I didn't see any. You didn't see any monkeys? There was no wildlife.
00:18:50 Henry: There was a deer.
00:18:52 John Daub: In Miyajima? There were no deer. The deer was tall. Oh, there were no deer. There were monkeys. And when I climbed it the first time, the monkeys were taking their poo out of their rear and they were throwing it at the people on the path going up. What is that? I looked up in the trees and it was the monkeys. They were taking their poo out of their rear. Like this. I'm serious.
00:19:14 John Daub: No monkeys? I'm glad that's not Joji. Alright. Where did Peter go? Peter! Peter? Do you call him Peter or do you call him Daddy?
00:19:33 Joji: Do you call him Peter or do you call him Daddy?
00:19:37 Peter von Gomm: Go find Dad.
00:19:39 John Daub: We gotta get out of here. This is too much Disney for me in one sitting. I need space between each other. Disney makes me a little depressed. I don't know why. I'm flying everywhere. It's pretty cool though. Do they have these kinds of light-ups in Australia?
00:20:04 Henry: Not like this.
00:20:07 John Daub: After Christmas is a whole new bobby [?]. Oh yeah! Peter's gone AWOL, huh? He's looking at the lights. Well, nice to meet you. Do you guys want a picture? I'm gonna get a selfie. Awesome! Nice to meet you guys. Have a safe trip back home. Have a safe trip back home. Come on back to Japan. I'll see you in Australia. Cool! Alright, I gotta get out of here. This is way too much Disney in one's time. I need space between each one. Peter, I gotta get out of here! Peter! He's... That's way too much Disney for one. Look, I came for the lights. I didn't come for... I know! Watch your language too. This is a family show. Craps is a game you play. It's gambling. Don't talk about gambling.
00:21:57 John Daub: So this place, Shiodome, is actually gonna have a Christmas market, which is pretty cool. Shiodome Street Fest 2017. It takes place starting this Saturday from 3pm to 9pm all the way to Christmas Day. And then it's done! They'll have a Christmas tree forest. A forest of Christmas trees.
00:22:22 John Daub: Are you feeling the Christmas spirit?
00:22:24 Peter von Gomm: Are you feeling the Christmas spirit?
00:22:27 John Daub: Ho! Ho! You don't look really... That was his line. Alright, let's get out of here. I gotta go. We're walking over to Ginza now. But that was cool! It's a 50 million, million LED light display. And you get into that Christmas feeling. Maybe that Disney feeling. A little bit too much Disney. This might be a good place to wrap up.
00:22:52 Peter von Gomm: Yeah, we can wrap up here.
00:22:53 John Daub: That's where we started. It's a diet light show. It's a light light show. This is more my style. My brain does not melt. Or smelt. That would be gold, right? But you can see this is the Shiodome City. This is a very high building. Is Shiodome part of the reclaimed land? I'm not really sure of the history. I do know that it's mostly new. I tend to say yes. You can see the monorail and the reflection up there. That's the monorail going towards Odaiba. That's the Yurikamome line. And Odaiba is reclaimed land. It's still pretty nice even down here. Most of the city is decked out in Christmas lights right now. Especially this area. Shiodome is a very famous place to see the Christmas lights. This place in Shinjuku where I showed you yesterday. The Shinjuku Southern Terrace. Omotesando always has lights year-round. It's even brighter at Christmas time. There's a couple places around Shibuya. Every single corner has a really unique area. Tokyo Disneyland is also a very popular place to go for Christmas.
00:24:11 John Daub: He lost all of his treasure so if you come to Tokyo this is one place you might want to stop. They're gonna have an event here starting on this weekend and most of the Marunouchi (business district) the other side of Tokyo Station is really famous for having some amazing Christmas lights including a massive Christmas tree inside of the Marunouchi building which is really cool. I'm gonna sign off here. I want to thank Tyler and Bon for this Super Chat and everybody else because I'm gonna keep this video up for forever and I hope it doesn't get demonetized but we're gonna fight to keep it despite the Disney-ness of this episode. Nice to join us. You're Judy. Got done, eh? Thank you. Thanks for joining us, buddy.
00:25:07 Peter von Gomm: Yeah, thank you for coming. Thank you for inviting us, John.
00:25:07 John Daub: Yeah, I invited them like an hour ago. Hey Peter, Mr. Last Minute. I'm gonna stream live. You want to join us in the live stream?
00:25:15 Peter von Gomm: At this, you know me.
00:25:19 John Daub: Yeah, why don't you give us a head's up next time. Like I didn't even know myself. Spontaneous, spontaneity is always fun. It's funner. Yeah, it's much funner, it's better. Alright, and we got this fruit cake that needs some food. So does anybody actually eat fruit cakes?
00:25:40 Peter von Gomm: I do.
00:25:40 John Daub: Do you really? Well my grandmother was from England. Okay, my father's side of the family is from Cambridge area in England. She'd always make fruit cakes and mincemeat pie but didn't have any meat in it. It was like raisins and stuff. But did you have blood pudding as well?
00:25:56 Peter von Gomm: I think we did actually. I think we did. She was old school. My grandmother was old school. She called me yeah, Johnny. She called, hey Johnny, come over here, Johnny. Johnny, are you being naughty? She'd say naughty, naughty Johnny.
00:26:13 John Daub: Thank you again Tyler. Tyler he saved the feed so even if it gets demonetized we're gonna be okay. That's the holiday spirit. Merry Christmas. Thank you Tyler. Thank you. Yeah, I really cut off here. There's not that much else to show you except for commuters that are going. Actually I just saw a Christmas tree. Maybe wrap it with the Christmas tree. Okay, alright we'll give the last 20 seconds. Last 20 seconds over towards a Christmas tree. Alright, Peter shows Christmas tree. I'm gonna go get some Christmas tree. Yours is more... Do you have a Christmas tree at home? It's probably one of those like stylish snobby trees. That's something that Mr. European Peter would... You're just... I'm just reading the chats. Snobby. I wouldn't say that.
00:27:12 John Daub: Oh okay. Oh that's beautiful. I'm gonna come in there. And Diana's good. That's a nice, that's a good way to wrap it up.
00:27:20 Peter von Gomm: Yeah, alright.
00:27:21 John Daub: Say goodnight everybody.
00:27:22 Peter von Gomm: Goodnight everybody.
00:27:24 John Daub: Wherever you are. Goodnight and good morning. Joji, signing out. Here, say goodbye.
00:27:28 Joji: Joji, we're signing out. Bye bye.
00:27:29 Joji: Bye bye. Bye guys.
00:27:31 John Daub: You can see him on the channel, right? That's right. I'll put a link in the description.
00:27:35 Peter von Gomm: Yes, please.
00:27:36 Joji: Yeah.
00:27:36 John Daub: And I'll see you all too. The last 20 seconds, turn around to the Panasonic Christmas tree. Sleigh bells ring. Put your hand up. Put your hand up. Are you listening? It's the land of... Hey, get out of the shot. I'm just a crazy kid.
