Tokyo's Christmas Market Experience Hibiya Park
Tokyo's Christmas Market Experience Hibiya Park
Overview
In this festive live stream, John Daub explores the Tokyo Christmas Market set up in Hibiya Park, right in the heart of Tokyo's business district near Ginza and Yurakucho. Accompanied by his friend Jennifer, John dives into the German-themed market, showcasing the wooden stalls, Christmas decorations, and the bustling atmosphere that brings a piece of continental Europe to Japan.
The video captures the sensory experience of the market, from the smell of fried food and spiced wine to the sight of illuminated towers and wreaths. John and Jennifer navigate the crowds, purchase traditional hot wine (vin chaud) in collectible mugs, and hunt for essential market foods like crêpes and sausages. Along the way, they interact with other visitors, including a French guest who validates the quality of the hot wine.
Beyond the food and drink, John reflects on the importance of seasonal celebrations for expats and locals alike. He highlights how events like this allow people to come together, share joy, and feel the Christmas spirit even while living far from home. The stream concludes with warm holiday wishes and a look at the lively community enjoying the event.

00:00:00 John Daub: This is the Tokyo Christmas Market. We're in Hibiya Park and we're about to start another live stream for the Only in Japan Go channel. Jennifer's gone! She's way past me. This market is only here during Christmas time in December. I think it started at the beginning of December and goes on until Christmas. That's why it's called the Christmas Market.
00:20:00 John Daub: Oh, there she is. We're going to show you around the Christmas Market this episode and eat. So here we go. She's hard to... just find the girl who has a lot of passion. Ah, they're lined up. Hey, those people are sorry but they're worse than me. They already have a drink. It's not finished but they're chugging already to get another one. Let's do it! Buy your drink and while you're drinking it, get back in line and wait for the next one. So round two.
01:18:00 Jennifer: So, Jennifer here. We were at the vending machine corner about 15 minutes ago. Now we're at the Christmas Market. They're pretty close together.
01:26:00 John Daub: This is Hibiya Park, which is basically across from Ginza and Yurakucho. So this is the center of Tokyo. Pretty central. And they have an amazing Christmas Market. I'm going to show you around. Where did Jennifer go? There you are. Alright, you wait here. Do you have enough money? You can go around and get me too. Would you like a hot wine too?
01:59:00 Jennifer: Oh yeah, yeah. Give me hot wine.
02:01:00 John Daub: Do you know they have alcohol? There's the menu. It looks pretty good. They have food here too. Maybe it's time to feed Jennifer. Nosh abroad just put in a super chat. Thank you, Nosh. With that, I'm going to give Jennifer some extra cash. Jennifer, you've gotten a present from Nosh abroad.
02:34:00 Jennifer: Thank you very much.
02:35:00 John Daub: Yeah, let me. So we can get it as a whole. I'm digging deep. Here you go.
02:45:00 Jennifer: Thank you.
02:48:00 John Daub: Yeah, you too. Tyler, you got beat, my friend. Trust me, we'll be putting that to good use. So we're at the Christmas market. Jennifer's waiting. I'm going to take you around really quickly, get some food and two spiced wines and try to get a tray. I'll be back in like five minutes.
03:13:00 Jennifer: No problem.
03:14:00 John Daub: Okay, we'll be back. Bye, Jennifer.
03:18:00 Jennifer: Bye.
03:20:00 John Daub: Alright, here we go. I'm going to take you around the Christmas market really quick. In the center of Hibiya Park is a fountain. And what they've done is put a lot of these Christmas stands in the spirit of the markets that I've seen in continental Europe. Because I didn't see them in the UK so much, but it's pretty cool. And it's kind of unexpected in Tokyo, Japan, like right up there. But I can tell you one thing, it's a really welcome sight because I feel a lot more Christmassy now. I mean, it's actual Christmas. When you put booze in here, you know you're going to get a lot of happiness.
04:04:00 John Daub: They have a really comprehensive menu, a lot of it mostly with booze. Sausage, fried chicken, sauce with fried potatoes. Everything's fried. Tyler, my friend, we will be eating now until the end of time. Thank you. Beef stew, cream spaetzle. I haven't seen spaetzle since I was in Austria, in Vienna. And here's the booze down here: hot apple wine, hot Kahlua milk. It's the good stuff. It's very German. This is a German theme. Oh, it smells so good. I can't even describe the smell. It's a mixture of fried food, beer, and sweet wine. A lot of people on dates. And you can see the buildings behind. This is the central business district of Tokyo. So they put it in a good spot. Thank you, Von. Thank you, Vio as well. Vio Mega. We're doing very well. Thank you. Wow, donuts. Or is it donuts? I don't know what they call it in Germany. I guess it's not a donut. It's a wreath. I got food on my mind. Look at that. It's really Christmassy. You have a lot of people trying to get the photos. You have to get low to get this entire tower of Christmas spirit in.
06:19:00 John Daub: I apologize if the video is lagging. I think there's a lot of people on the 4G network right now. But we're going to do our best to make the signal better, which basically means I'm going to be going like this to try to add some extra magic to the signal. That's all I can really do. But when you get into a crowded place like this, it's hard to get a good signal. So I apologize in advance. I'm going to try my best to give you the best experience. The key words are best and Christmas. Everybody. There's not really any foreign people here. The only foreign people are the ones working behind the booths at some of them. Look, there's some foreign girls here. I think they're Russian or maybe Ukrainian. I'm not sure.
07:26:00 John Daub: Jennifer! Jennifer was in this line and she's gone. Jennifer!
07:41:00 Jennifer: They made you buy the cup?
08:07:00 John Daub: Yeah. It's like 600 yen, and it's 1000. But then you keep the cup, and if you do a refill it will be only 600 yen. Oh, I see how they work. Alright. So thank you, Nosh and Tyler and Von. Thank you for the free... everybody. The cup was expensive.
08:32:00 Jennifer: How is it?
08:32:00 John Daub: No. But tastes like curry? What is he talking about?
08:41:00 French guy: Okay. I'm French. I have been drinking hot wine since I was born. Almost.
08:50:00 John Daub: How do you get curry taste? I'm getting the spices. It tastes good. Some raisins and cinnamon and nutmeg. It's not rich.
09:04:00 Jennifer: Where did you go?
09:05:00 John Daub: Oh, you came. I thought I will see more Indian and French. This hot wine. Oh really? Don't you think?
09:15:00 Jennifer: I'm not really thinking much of anything right now. I'm just drinking. Show your cute cup that you will bring home.
09:24:00 John Daub: Why did you give me the pink one? This is the curly color. Pink. Okay, listen. What were your choices? Pink and pink.
09:37:00 Jennifer: I had been working. I thought okay. The white wine is nice. But if I get two white ones, they won't see there is a pink one too.
09:47:00 John Daub: Well, I got to live with this forever. Voila. You know what, Tyler? Thank you so much for the pink mug. Tomorrow morning you can have your coffee with that. Here, bump the screen. Cheers to everybody. It's like you're here with us. Tyler's having fun in the office. Tyler, what time is it? I like the fact that there is some kind of religious theme, although they're just props for the market. I like it, sort of. So Catherine is 6am in Montreal right now.
11:10:00 Jennifer: The selfie.
11:17:00 John Daub: That's true. Very good. Yes, Nosh. Kawaii desu ne (it's cute, isn't it). Yeah. In the spirit of Christmas, of course. Right. Alright. Let's walk around the lake. We're going to walk around the lake. Once again, I apologize in advance if there's lag. We're in a really crowded area. But I've been putting a lot of extra love into the signal. So hopefully it stays at a very high definition.
11:48:00 Jennifer: Say that again.
11:49:00 John Daub: Was that some phlegm? Crap. They have some crêpes over here.
12:10:00 Jennifer: Yeah, we're going to eat.
12:16:00 John Daub: What do you want to eat? I want to get some food really quickly, so let's walk around. Okay, hold on. I'm turning the camera on. Alright, they said it was okay to put it upside down. Of course, I asked before I touched it. I always ask before I touch. Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle la la la la.
13:00:00 Jennifer: You forgot the words already, huh?
13:02:00 John Daub: This is really strong wine. And I need a crêpe. Thank you! You're cute!
14:14:00 John Daub: It's a must-have when you go to a Christmas market: the hot wine and the crêpe. We'll go get some crêpe right now. Say vin chaud for hot wine. How do you say that?
14:25:00 Jennifer: I don't know but I'm really hungry. Let's get some crêpe! Just go!
14:33:00 John Daub: I'm just trying to find some crêpe. Say it again for the camera. It's actually a big market here. We'll get some big crêpe. I'm looking for some crêpe. We're looking for some crêpe. If they don't have crêpes, this is a fake Christmas market. It's a German Christmas market, it's German themed.
15:01:00 Jennifer: But still they should have crêpe.
15:03:00 John Daub: Oh look at Teddy Ruxpin! Maybe not, these are the German version. Those are the Mr. Bean bears. Oh yeah, they're the same. Oh wait, I can't lose Jennifer. Gotta stick with Jennifer. I love the Christmas lights. This is the best out of all the Christmas places I've been to. This is the best one. Tyler's having fun in the office. Tyler, what time is it? I like the fact that there is some kind of religious theme, although they're just props for the market. I like it, sort of. So Catherine is 6am in Montreal right now.
16:08:00 John Daub: Jennifer! Oh she's way down there. Jennifer, we need food! I can't believe it's not... Just get sausages or something. Don't you want a good sausage? Should we do that? A mix? Try some mixed sausages.
16:37:00 Jennifer: Sure. Whatever your heart desires.
16:40:00 John Daub: My heart desires a crêpe. I know, her heart desires a crêpe. The only way to satisfy Jennifer would be for some crêpe. Do they not have the crêpe? She's gotta line up properly. You're not good at the lining up.
17:09:00 Jennifer: Are you hungry?
17:15:00 John Daub: You know what, get whatever you want. I get the beer, okay? Just take my wallet, just take it. Where are the crêpes? Keep on looking for crêpes. Okay, we'll go for crêpes after whatever you get. While you're waiting in line, I'm gonna look at the menu. Why did you pick this shop? Sausage plate, mixed sausages. That's not funny. Grilled beer sausages. Curry sausage. They ain't got curry sausages. No, I saw that. Yeah, she said no to that. They have grilled chicken. They put the chef hat on the end of the chicken, which is pretty cool. I'm gonna go get some crêpes. Goulash. I love a good goulash. Actually, you know what? The goulash looks good. Tyler's gonna get busted. Don't laugh too hard. Clam chowder. They're having a special sausage today.
18:41:00 John Daub: Peter [von Gomm] was supposed to come out tonight. He's sick. He's not feeling well, so he couldn't make it. What I wanted to get. Oh, that looks good. I just wanted to grab it off of her plate. Apparently so are you. Peter's not feeling good, but I'll be seeing him tomorrow. He's having a Christmas party at his house. You can't come to Peter's party. I invited Jennifer to come to Peter's party, but Jennifer's busy. So when I do the stream with Jennifer, Peter's busy. And when Peter's doing something, Jennifer's busy. But it's funny, I'm never busy. I'm with both of them. That's a lot of sausages. Look, this is what you bought us, Tyler.
20:04:00 John Daub: Carlos, they're coming. They're coming. I like the special sausages. Just so you know. Okay, here, I can hold it. Jennifer's asking for extra. Alright, let's get to a table. Yeah, there's a lot of tables around here. Let's go speak with the people. Here, there's a rent-a-cop. He's not a policeman, he's a rent-a-cop. Oh, can we go inside? Is this copyright free, the music?
20:49:00 Jennifer: Yeah.
20:50:00 John Daub: Oh yeah, it's gotta be copyright free because it's so bad. I mean, so good. I mean, it's... never mind what I mean. It's okay. So we're going inside the tent. The tent probably not gonna be able to hear me beyond this point. But it's all about the experience. So alright, do it. Do it, Jennifer. Inside the tent.
31:35:00 John Daub: So I'm in Tokyo. I've been to the city: Shinjuku Southern Terrace. And I made videos on all of these Christmas-like places. This one! Oh yeah. This one is the spirit of Christmas. A lot of people coming together to have a lot of fun. And that's important to me. I think this is a time of year where we wanna have a little bit of fun. We wanna get together with people that we care about, whether it's your family or your friends. You could be an expat here in Tokyo and you could still feel that spirit. I think that's pretty cool. I'm glad you came tonight and I'm glad I brought you with me. So thanks for sharing this Christmas market experience. I'm gonna have to say goodbye because we're going on like 30 minutes since the adventure we had. So thanks for sharing it with us. Jennifer's gonna eat all the sausages. I'm gonna go back in there and eat some more food. But I wanna thank everybody for the super chats. Thank you very much, Tyler and Vaughn and Nosh and everybody. I really appreciate it. Merry Christmas everybody. Happy holidays wherever you are in the world. I'm gonna go eat some more food. I'm still jacked up. Bye everybody.
