Summary

Tokyo Meet Up Harajuku Yoyogi Event

Overview

In this special community episode, John Daub hosts the second-ever Only in Japan meetup in Tokyo, gathering fans and subscribers from around the world for a classic spring tradition: hanami (cherry blossom viewing). Starting outside Harajuku Station, John navigates the confusion of multiple exits to collect the growing group before leading them on a walk to Yoyogi Park. Along the way, he shares insights about the area, including Meiji Bridge and the nearby Meiji Shrine, while live streaming the journey for those watching online.

Upon arriving at Yoyogi Park, the group finds a spot near the lake to lay out a large blue sheet, a staple of Japanese picnic culture. Despite the cherry blossoms being slightly past their peak due to unseasonably warm weather, the atmosphere is festive. Attendees introduce themselves, sharing where they are from and their travel stories, highlighting the global reach of the channel. The event features food, drinks, and a sense of camaraderie among strangers united by their love for Japan.

The video captures the informal, welcoming spirit of the Only in Japan community. John interacts with attendees, manages the live stream logistics, and even spots his recurring crow friend, Toby. The episode serves as both a travel guide for navigating Harajuku and Yoyogi Park and a celebration of the connections formed through online content. It concludes with a promise of more content, including a taste test of unique Japanese potato chips.

Japan Travel Tips

  • Meetup Navigation: Harajuku Station has multiple exits. The main exit is near Takeshita Dori, but the Chiyoda Line exit (Gate 2) is also common. Clarify meeting points clearly.
  • Hanami Essentials: Bring a blue sheet (leisure sheet) to sit on. The ground can be damp or dirty, and grass stains are common without one.
  • Timing: Cherry blossom season is fleeting. Warm weather can cause blooms to fall quickly; check forecasts closely.
  • Park Safety: Yoyogi Park is generally safe, even at night, but stay in populated areas during hanami parties.
  • Food: Convenience stores (like Family Mart) are great for picking up drinks and snacks for picnics.
  • Connectivity: Live streaming can be spotty in parks; have a backup plan for sharing locations (e.g., Facebook pins, Google Maps links).

Japanese Language & Culture Notes

  • Hanami (花見): Literally "flower viewing," specifically referring to cherry blossoms. It involves picnicking under the trees with friends and colleagues.
  • Kanpai (乾杯): The Japanese equivalent of "Cheers!" used before drinking.
  • Mono no aware (物の哀れ): A Japanese concept referring to the pathos of things, often associated with the transient beauty of cherry blossoms.
  • Blue Sheets: Large blue vinyl tarps sold at convenience stores specifically for sitting on during outdoor events.
  • Toby (Crow): John's nickname for the crows in Japan. Crows are ubiquitous in Tokyo and often bold around food.
  • Shinkansen (新幹線): The bullet train network, mentioned by attendees traveling between cities like Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka.

Food & Drink Guide

  • Beer: The primary drink for the hanami party. Attendees brought various brands.
  • Takoyaki (たこ焼き): Octopus balls seen at street food stalls near the park entrance.
  • Yakisoba (焼きそば): Fried noodles available at food trucks in the park.
  • Crepes: Marion Crepes truck spotted in the park; a famous Harajuku sweet.
  • Suntory Drink: A canned drink John purchased at Family Mart, tasted like watered-down umeshu (plum wine).
  • Chips: Various flavors brought by attendees, including unique Japanese varieties like amazake (sweet fermented rice) and chocolate potato chips.
  • Umeshu (梅酒): Plum wine, referenced as a flavor comparison for the Suntory drink.

People

  • John Daub: Host and creator of Only in Japan Go. He organizes the meetup and guides the group.
  • Attendees: A diverse group of subscribers and fans from around the world, including the USA (Michigan, Texas, California), Australia (Melbourne), India, Netherlands, and Canada.
  • Nosh: Mentioned as a moderator helping with the live stream.
  • Taka: A Japanese attendee and football fan who helps with location tagging.
  • Carolyn: A repeat visitor to Japan on a mission to visit the oldest tea house (Tsuen Tea).
  • Bobby: A visitor from California who expresses appreciation for the hanami season.
  • Toby (crow): A recurring character in John's videos, spotted in the park.

Key Takeaways

  • Community Power: Online communities can translate into real-world connections, bringing people together from different continents.
  • Seasonal Timing: Nature is unpredictable; warm weather can shorten the cherry blossom season significantly.
  • Preparation: For hanami, bringing your own seating (blue sheet) and drinks is essential for comfort.
  • Safety: Tokyo parks are safe spaces for gathering, even for large groups of foreigners.
  • Flexibility: Live events require adaptability regarding location sharing and communication with attendees.

Notable Quotes

  • 02:25 "It's been freakishly warm the last couple of weeks. Which is why there's no cherry blossoms. They all bloomed."
  • 04:52 "You can never have enough beer. You can never have enough beer."
  • 07:13 "Usually this is where all of the goth girls are on the weekends but since the police cracked down, they're gone."
  • 18:47 "This is not a very safe place. Forget the humans. It's the crows that make this place dangerous. Toby (crow)."
  • 22:06 "Hanami Cherry Blossom 101. Bring a blue sheet, invite some great people, bring some food, sit around the middle, put all the food in the center, and just go to town."

00:00 John Daub: Hey everybody, I'm here for the Only in Japan meet up. We're going to go to Yoyogi Park. I am now outside of the station and I'm going to try to find everybody. I don't know where they are. We'll find them. There you are! I'm early! I never thought I'd be early. Actually, I'm streaming right now. Is that okay?

00:39 John Daub: Alright, hello everybody. I hope everybody is in the right area because there's another exit. You didn't see anybody? Okay, stay here. Does anybody want to come? I'm going to the other exit. Let's go. We'll be back in like one second. But don't count.

01:01 John Daub: Yeah, I thought it was Takeshita Dori side too. But then I was coming in this direction for some other place I was going to go to. When I exited here, I'm like, wait, there's another exit? There's two exits. I thought this might be a problem. So it's only going to take a minute to go down here and come back.

01:21 John Daub: Thanks for coming. What's your name?

01:24 Bobby: I'm Bobby.

01:25 John Daub: Bobby, nice to meet you Bobby.

01:26 Bobby: Nice to meet you John.

01:27 John Daub: And your name?

01:28 Steve: Steve.

01:28 John Daub: Steve, nice to meet you Steve. I'm John. So this is Harajuku station and there are actually two exits. I wasn't exactly clear on which one we were going to take. So there might be a little bit of confusion. The other one is by Takeshita Dori (Takeshita Street). That's not the one we want to go to. But that exit is about 50 meters down the hill and then we have to come back. There might be a few stragglers down there waiting for us. But that's alright.

01:57 John Daub: Then after we get everybody and collect the people, we're going to go towards Yoyogi Park and do some hanami (cherry blossom viewing). I got a big blue sheet this time. I didn't have a blue sheet at the last event. This is no place to sit. People weren't happy. They got grass all over their rear ends. It's a nice day so the ground is all dry.

02:22 John Daub: I'm surprised how warm Japan has been.

02:25 Group: I know. It's been freakishly warm the last couple of weeks. Which is why there's no cherry blossoms. They all bloomed. I got here right in the nick of time for them. Right at the height of full bloom. And then 3 or 4 days later they're gone. I got lucky. Very lucky. There's a lot of angry people going, "Why Mother Nature? Why?" Well you know other parts of Japan are still blooming. They just gotta have more friends.

02:55 John Daub: Alright. Do one quick walk through. Is anybody here for Only in Japan meet up? No. There's Takeshita Street everybody. So we are in central Harajuku. I guess we're good. I think everybody figured it out. I think we're good. Alright we're good.

03:24 John Daub: Anybody looking? I think if you're watching this live stream and you're here you can follow us right? So one reason why I'm streaming is so we know where we are. You know where I am.

03:38 Group: Well it was played on the map so. It was pretty yeah. Only when I got here I got this exit. Oh okay. I just had to walk up and out. Oh you knew to go up there? Yeah. I just looked at the map and I knew like this is the exit and there's another big exit over there. Right. Should have been clear but who knows. Just wing it you know. Yeah. I mean you can easily get lost. It took me an hour to get here actually. In the end everything works out pretty good. Usually. Oh yeah.

04:11 John Daub: Thanks everybody for joining me. I know a lot of you who are watching can't make it to the meet up. I don't do a lot of these. This is only my second meet up ever in Japan. Which is weird. But you know when you live here and you're working every day, it's hard for you to get out and make the time. And this is such a special time of the year. It's pretty cool to see everybody. And I saw a lot of people that I've seen like their icon or their picture online. I never met them in person. Like wow there's so many people. What are their names? So once we sit down and we get some drinks I think everything will be pretty cool. Do you guys have drinks and stuff?

04:52 Group: I have beer drinks and some cups. That's the way you do it. We're getting ready for some hanami on the way. Hanami action. It takes about 10 minutes or so to walk from Harajuku to Yoyogi Park. So this guide will help you find your way.

05:07 John Daub: This is the other exit. The one that's more, I guess this is more the central exit for Harajuku station. If you're coming off the Chiyoda Line, take exit gate 2. Exit gate 2. You heard it here first. Or second. Alright. Nobody was there. We're clear. We're clear.

05:32 John Daub: Hello.

05:34 Scott Marini: Hi I'm John. Scott Marini.

05:36 John Daub: Nice to meet you. We're live streaming. Hi Hannah. Nice to meet you. Zach. Nice to meet you. Sarah. Nice to meet you. Jonathan. Nice to meet you. Jonathan. Chris. Chris. Nice to meet you. Hongza. Hongza. Hongza. Nice to meet you. Ray. Ray. Nice to meet you. Sammy. Sammy. Carolyn. Carolyn. Welcome. Jeff. Jeff. Nice to meet you Jeff. Rhiannon. Rhiannon. Rhiannon. Nice to meet you. Gina. Gina. Nice to meet you Gina. Tice. Tice. Got it. Nice to meet you Tice. Nice to meet you my friend. And we already met.

06:15 John Daub: We're going around the way. Let's go. Does everybody have drinks and stuff? Awesome. Okay. I brought an extra beer. I decided to eat this. Alright. You can never have enough beer. You can never have enough beer. Cheers. Cheers. There's the subway entrance to Harajuku. Well we came by JR. You came by JR today? No. I came by every which way. Every which way. I left really early because I knew I would get lost. Alright. Not really lost but a few adjustments. Yeah. A few adjustments. Yeah.

06:54 John Daub: This is Carolyn. She's well we've seen her on the few of your, on page one. You've seen her in the live streams uh through Skype and now you're here in Japan. This is cool.

07:10 Carolyn: Yeah.

07:13 John Daub: So this is Meiji Bridge. This is the bridge that goes towards Meiji Shrine. Usually this is where all of the goth girls are on the weekends but since the police cracked down, they're gone. They're not really here. But it's still a nice place. It's a nice place. If we go to the right, we go to Meiji Shrine. If we go to the left, we go to Yoyogi Park. We're going to the left. That's the way we roll. And once we get the hanami going, uh I'm gonna stop this live stream so I can actually talk. So there's the entrance to Meiji Shrine. It's dark in there. And we're, but we're going this way. This way will take us to uh, that's new. It's like a little cafe. I like it. Well done Meiji Shrine.

08:04 Group: Yeah. Alright.

08:07 John Daub: So hopefully everybody's behind me. Thanks for joining us on this live stream, this adventure. We're going to do some hanami and uh, everybody here is visiting from all around the world and we're gonna ask where people are from as soon as we get situated. It takes about, as I said before, 10 minutes to get from Harajuku Station to Yoyogi and uh, I'm not sure where we're sitting yet. It just depends. But Yoyogi Park's a pretty big place and I think we're gonna be able to find a place to sit not too far in. But it's pretty exciting to see everybody from around the world and visiting Japan and uh, we're gonna have some fun today.

08:47 Group: Have you been to Yoyogi Park before? Anybody out there?

08:55 John Daub: So this is where I filmed the Olympic Stadium, one of the shots of the Olympic Stadium episodes in the main channel a couple of weeks ago. Harajuku does have a little bit of graffiti. It's a young area. And then here's the entrance to Yoyogi Park.

09:30 John Daub: There is some street food here. We have takoyaki (octopus balls) and yakisoba (fried noodles). That's a lot of yakisoba. Alright, let's make our way in. It's time to do some hanami.

09:54 Group: Oh, um, they usually do Oktoberfest there three times a year. They have chairs and tables and... That's probably Oktoberfest. What? Hey, this is Japan. It's very confusing. Are you serious? I'm serious. And it's like, it's like 20, 20 or 30 dollars for a liter of beer too. Wow. But they do... Half the park covered up with the tents. Do they? That could be, that could be the event. It's actually a fun event. The problem is though, it's not October or September. It's weird. Or even July. I know, not even July. But they do it three times a year, I think. But you know, there's, there's, there's never a reason not to drink in Japan. Every day is a celebration, especially now, the hanami season. This is a time where half the city's drunk. You know, for, for celebrating. There's a reason why.

10:54 John Daub: All right. Welcome to Yoyogi Park. They have the 2020 Tokyo banner out. I don't know how the signal is. So hopefully stays nice and clear for you on the other side, watching around the world. There we go. We are now officially in Yoyogi Park. It's official. There you go. Look at all the food trucks. This is pretty cool. What do they got going on here? Crepes. Marion Crepes is the famous crepe company that they, they have a shop in Harajuku and now they have a truck here. Those guys are rich.

11:52 John Daub: All right. I think we'll wrap around here. Have you guys all been to Yoyogi Park before?

11:55 Group: No. No. One time. We got first timers here.

12:07 John Daub: And let's see if I remember the way to go. This is, you can, we can go straight this way, but I think the cherry blossoms, which, you can't see right now because they're all gone this way, but it's a beautiful park. It's known, it's not especially popular with cherry blossoms, Yoyogi Park. They have them, but it's not famous for it. What Yoyogi Park is famous for is, gosh, I don't really know. I think it's just famous for having a lot of space in the center of Tokyo. And it is like Central Park in a way.

12:45 Group: Okay. It's not like Tokyo, but it's different. It's young. There's a lot of young people. And, you know, I've been, I've been to a lot of drinking parties in Japan when I was, you know, 10 years ago. And sometimes the final party would be held in the park behind the trees and stuff. I mean, we'll just be drinking like, like here at midnight. And Japan, Tokyo is such a safe place. This would be the perfect place for like muggers and, you know, criminal and the underworld and all the bad stuff to happening behind trees and stuff. But, you know, here in Japan, it's pretty safe. I don't know of any crime that's ever happened after hours in Yoyogi.

13:31 Group: Guess not. It's a random guy. John, you left early. I think I left. I did. I leave early. Did I leave early? You were on time. And I said at 3.50 we'll leave. And we walked down and came back. So that was 50, right? Yeah. Around this. Oh, you were a little early actually. I know. I know. That doesn't happen. That doesn't happen. Never happens. Never happens.

14:01 John Daub: So what I'm going to do is I'm going to... We're on the edge, John. We're on the edge today. If you're not sure where we are, just follow this live stream. I will put a pin in the Facebook page as soon as we settle down so then you can find us. What we're going to be is back towards where the water fountain is and a little bit to the right of it. And then if you go there, you should be able to... Whoa. I've never seen some smooching in the park before. He's going deep too. Is that a regular kiss? That was like diving board 100 meter dive kiss. That's Harajuku kissing maybe. I don't even think they do that in France. I'm just saying. I'm going to have to call Jennifer out to get the answer on that.

15:09 Group: All right. Yeah. Now we're in the area. This is where the cherry blossoms are. We do have... Well, used to be. There are restrooms here. After this restroom, we're going to cut in and go towards the center. And you can see in the distance, straight in the middle of your screen, the water fountain. All right. When you get to the trash, take a left. That should be a good marker. All right. Off road. Off road.

15:41 John Daub: A lot of my friends did cherry blossom hanami parties here in the park, in Yoyogi Park, last week. So I'm guessing, since it's a weekday, and it's also after the start of the season, it won't be as crowded. So thank you, Jim, from Cherry Blossoms are Full Bloom in Tacoma, Washington, apparently. That's pretty awesome. I got some reports and got some other pictures from places in Europe. Not bloomed yet. It's still too cold. So I appreciate the cherry blossom updates from around the world. It's pretty cool to see how the blossoms are blooming in different places. Australia, they're like in fall mode. And Argentina and Chile and everybody else down there in the southern hemisphere.

16:46 John Daub: We really are. We are deep. This is forest. This could be an episode of Blair Witch Project. People have been known to pitch tents out here and camp in the middle of the night because they can't find a hotel. It's happened. You know, Japan's pretty safe. If you slept out here with your sleeping bag, nothing would happen to you, I don't think.

17:07 Group: No, you'd be safe. You'd probably be pretty safe. Probably pretty safe. I like using words like, yeah, there's a chance. There's always a risk if you, you know, rough it. That you get roughed up.

17:21 John Daub: All right. We crossed the road once. There's a water fountain. Remember that dog and guy? They might not be here though. It's not a very good landmark. All right. You can see now on the left side of the screen, there's a water fountain. See that? We're not that far away from this. And there's a bridge in the middle. You see the bridge where there seems to be some kind of party going on? So we're past that bridge this way. And you see that bridge? You see all those, the fresh green leaves? I think these used to be cherry blossoms. These used to be cherry blossoms over all around here. And they're gone now. And we're going to be sitting right there. This is the cherry blossom area. Guess what? There ain't anything here. There's a lot of crows. You got that right, Nash? A lot of crows in Yoyogi Park. I don't see one. Okay. I see a couple of cherry blossoms, but it's really, really not a lot. Okay. There are people doing cherry blossoms. This is the lake. And we're just right next to the lake, everybody. So this is a good spot.

18:47 John Daub: Welcome to Yoyogi Park, Hanami 2018, with a bunch of people from all over the world. Well, look at that big crow. This is not a very safe place. Forget the humans. It's the crows that make this place dangerous. Toby (crow). Here's a sakura tree. Not that many left. There really aren't a lot of cherry blossoms left. There's cherry blossoms in our minds. They're in our minds and in our souls. There's a couple over there. Oh, yeah, there are. All right. We're going to be right... Oh, look at that crow. The crow sound is pretty good. I swear, this is a Hitchcock movie. We'll fly away with the tree. All right. We're going to pitch up right underneath here then. Between these three trees? I think that might be nice, huh? Oh, yeah. So we're between the trees. I don't know why nobody else took it except for perhaps the crows have been here first. Could be why. This is a nice spot, no? I like how this big rock's jutting out. All right. How about right here in the middle would be good, too? I think we got a pretty good... A pretty big blue sheet.

20:21 John Daub: All right. Let's get this set up. Can somebody hold the camera? Yeah, I got you. All right. How do you get turned around? Okay, there we go. All right. I got the same gimbal. Oh, do you? Yeah. That's pretty good. This is good. Oh, it is. It is. All right. I need some volunteers for blue sheet duty. Hello. I said duty. All right. This is a big one. Oh, that's our trash bag. This might be too big. That's good. Everybody get the place to start. All right. All right. I got a couple of bags. Can we call it over here or this is fine? This is fine. Just watch out for these rocks here, though. There's a rock right under there. There's a rock under there? Yeah. Hey guys, look for rocks before we hit people's rocks in your back situations. I think we're pretty good. We can use the rock to hold down a little bit corner. That's a good idea. This blue sheet only cost me like eight bucks. Eight bucks? Yeah, that's really cool. A donkey? Alright, take off your shoes before you get on. And then, yeah, thank you. Thank you, yeah. And there we go.

22:06 John Daub: It's Hanami Cherry Blossom 101. Bring a blue sheet, invite some great people, bring some food, sit around the middle, put all the food in the center, and just go to town. That's what we're gonna do today. Thank you. I think we got room for another hundred people. This is really cool. Alright. It feels nice to sit down. I've been walking about 63 miles a day walking since I've gotten to Tokyo. It feels nice to sit. Yeah. Take off your shoes. Relax a little bit. Pray the crows don't make a deposit on us or on trees above. These last week would have been absolutely stunning as cherry blossoms, but today it's just sort of... you can see a little bit of it, but the green leaves are starting to push through, and that's when you know that the season is finished. When you know the season's finished. Yeah. Very good.

23:24 John Daub: So everybody, if you have a drink... Did anybody bring cups? Yes. Thank goodness. I made a call, a shout out and say we need some cups. Hey, you're down here. Okay, sorry. Get down here. Nosh is here. Thanks for moderating, Nosh. I have to get the gimbal up. Hold on a second. You guys are down there. Okay. Alright, cups. Alright, make your donations. I knew this, Center. What did we all get? Chips. We got a lot of chips. What do you find when you're in Tokyo? You get a ton of chips. Awesome. Oh, cool. Alright, this is Hanami Party. Welcome to the Only Japan 2018 Hanami Party number 10. Thank you. That's awesome. Yeah. So we got... Whoa, we got the beers out now. Look at that. Wow, you're shaming me. I just brought one extra. She brought one extra. One is enough. I don't know.

24:42 John Daub: So I'm going to put a tag in the Facebook page so that everybody knows where we are. So I'm doing that right... Why are you always down here, guys? I'm going to put a tag here so you know where we are. If you still want to make it, you can. We got more than enough space for like you and your friends. And your friends' friends. And we're going to really have some fun right now. I know. Okay. So I'm opening up into the Facebook app. I'm going to tag the location here. And if you want to come, do come. Because that's really awesome.

25:25 Group: Alright, how do I do that? I can. How do I do that? I can. Even more cool. I got to go. I wanted to do what we were doing last week. Oh, I got the wind coming. As long as you focus on digging between the flowers. This is why we don't have any cherry blossoms left. Excuse me, is this the correct live stream over here? Yes. Welcome again. Welcome. All the way from Kanagawa. Where's Jay? He is drunk. He's got the hangover. Already? Yeah. That's pretty gross. Oh, it's so hot. He's saying it feels funny he might come in the evening. Oh, he's gonna come in the evening? Maybe, let's see. Again, he's also from Kanagawa. That's a leak. Oh, it's so hot. I know, this is the hottest day of the year. This is hot for you, like we're from India, so it's hot for you. Oh, if you compare it to India, this is not hot at all. But for Tokyo in the spring, yeah, this is like burning up. Really? Yeah. Normally we get hot, cold, hot, cold, and this whole week's just like hot, hotter, hotter, hotter. Tomorrow it's gonna be cold again. It's gonna be cold again? Yeah. Yeah, we just came from a... There's just a little bit of rain, too, right around the time you were here. Yeah, that's right. There's like dust storms. See that? Check it out. That's pretty nasty. We've got tumbleweed coming. Oh, I missed it. You can see the dust storms are just coming in. Allergies are bad. The pollen is really bad right now. I've kind of been clearing my throat every five minutes. I brought some cups as well, by the way. Awesome. You remind me to call the order for cups. Oh, we got some cups. All right, well, you know what? I don't know how to tag on the Facebook thing. Should I try it? Yeah, if you want to. Do you know how to do it? Maybe. Let's see. Yeah, just tag and put the location on there.

27:31 John Daub: So we're going to do a kanpai (cheers). Everybody have a drink? Let's get these drinks going around here. Actually, I didn't get a drink. I forgot to buy a drink. All right, what do you want? You want each or you want the other one? Oh, jeez. Let's put it in a cup, then. We'll put it in a cup. Yeah, I got cups right here. Everybody's got things. This is good. All right, T-minus 10 seconds for kanpai. Yeah. Oh, what is this stuff? Some Suntory stuff that I picked up at Family Mart. Oh, okay. If you got at Family Mart, it's got to be good. All right, okay, let's open it up. Thanks, everybody, for making this trip. Everybody, I think, seems like from all around the world. We've got every continent represented, maybe.

28:29 Group: John trashed. Oh, my gosh, really? Did I just hear that right? Kanpai. All right, everybody, kanpai. Wait, hold on. Everybody got a drink? Everybody got a drink? Serve. Win, win? All right. Everybody, kanpai. Kanpai. Oh, my, that's refreshing. That's not bad. It's not bad. It tastes like umeshu (plum wine). It's like watered down umeshu a little bit. It's easy to drink. Not bad, Family Mart. Not bad, Suntory. Well done. Great. 500 yen. Hey, pay attention, Facebook. Unless you share your location for like 60 minutes or something, but gets pretty weird if you go to the restroom. Share your location and then just copy the link. Oh, or maybe the link from Google Maps, maybe. Yeah, copy, paste Google Maps. Let's do a screenshot. I guess that's better if you do it, then, because if you do it, everybody gets a notification. If I do it, it's just if you go into a discussion. Okay. That's that. I'm cool with that. I'm down with that. It's not day you guys are down here again. Why do you up up? Okay?

29:56 John Daub: Right, so I'm still trying to figure it out and there's all these messages are coming in from people. It's like where are you? What did you do? What you left us here? Hey, dude, where are you? Like I got one guy. He said hey, I'm in front of Yoyogi Park. May I ask where are you now? He's so polite. He said may I ask and then he asked. That's a nice guy. That's the way I would do it, you know, all right. Let's see if I can do the location tag. This is Taka taka is a big football fan and he's Japanese so we can ask him lots of questions. All right, Taka. I pinned it. We're here. Taka can you find us taka? I'm here. I don't know. I don't know if it helped. It's all Toby's fault. Look for a blue tarp between three trees. Wow. Andrew if you're watching Andrew, we're here. We're between three trees. This is the normal Yoyogi. Hey, mom. Oh wait. We'll be there in an hour. Okay. We'll be here Andrew. This is my friend Andrew. Share your place with me next. How did you go? Okay? Oh, we know he wrote that an hour and a half ago. He should be here any moment now. It's Andrew's coming so we got we got a few people that are still having come in here. So we're gonna have to do another kanpai get this really going and then open up the chips. Get a beer and head over.

31:53 John Daub: All right, I'm sure I'm still trying to find a way to put the link in here. Yeah. Everyone's the whole world is like emailing me while I'm trying to do another thing. This is like the story of my life. I'm trying to get like edit one video and then everyone's coming after me. It's it's fun like that. Multipacket I can't I can't even get to the page because I get in all these messages. Just try to put the I want to put that link in here I think if maybe if I do the satellite picture people view a satellite shot. Right now I'm controlling Google satellite. Don't give like a. We're pretty much next to the park on this again. We're in the park. Yeah. So this is where we are just Harajuku station, which is the intersection the crossing there and we are here. Does that help? No, we're next to the lake. Inside the park the other lake is in Meiji shrine. So there's only one lake I'm now sharing the link. It's near the Chuo Hiruba. I'm saving the link. Share copy. All right, I'm doing it now. This is hard. I have an idea. So why don't I pass the camera around and everyone can tell a story?

33:36 Group: It's like. All right hot camera. Yeah, just. story, I had to. Just you know introduce yourself and and be a youtuber. Hello, well, I'm not good at this and I already did. You hit last one last time. Yeah. So I'm just gonna give it.

To go to the oldest tea house in Japan. It's been open since 1160 AD. It's called Tsuen Tea and it's in Uji. So I'm spending a lot of time near Kyoto, Nara and Fuji. But I love the Shinkansen (bullet trains) so I'll probably be going all over the place while I'm here.

37:47 Steve: Hi, I'm Steve. I'm here with a friend of mine for like 13 days. We're from Holland. And my friend's not here right now because he's in contact at the hotel doing his wash. So he's probably watching this and he's not gonna like it.

This has been an absolutely wonderful and eye-opening experience. I'm learning so much about Tokyo and Japan. That I think you can really only figure out once you've spent some time here. And I feel super fortunate to have been able to come right at the peak of hanami season. I feel that mono no aware (pathos of things). Now that it's ending and the buds are gone. But I'm thinking I'm coming back again next year.

38:52 Group: Woohoo! Yeah, come on back!

38:54 Taka: Hello, I'm Taka and I'm happy to join with you today. And that's all.

39:21 Group: Oh, boy, we got some... That's more than cherry blossoms in that air. Whoa, that's like a whole... Sand and cherry blossoms. Look at this mat here. I know, look what's happened to the mat. It did not come like this when I bought it. I thought you had more grass. Maybe I had more grass and less dirt. Sorry! We got the whole desert behind us. Check it out. You see that? It's not supposed to be that color. Oh, man! The wind has really picked up! Look at a typhoon! Very freak typhoon.

40:09 John Daub: Alright, so I have actually going on at the same time a Facebook Live stream. It's a Jap-phoon. They call it Jap-a-phoon. This is a Facebook Live. This is fun, everybody's turned into YouTubers. Alright, and then we're back. It's a live stream exception. Very cool. Alright, thank you Facebook. See you, everybody. Thanks for joining the live stream here at the Yoyogi Park. I passed it a little bit before I came. Well, not this one again. Are you gonna keep the live stream going? That one? No. This one? For a little bit? Actually, I brought some really weird potato chips. And thought I would do an actual episode of Only in Japan. Trying some really bizarre potato chips. Like weird ones. And then get some feedback. So I'm gonna do the live stream in... I don't know, give us about 15-30 minutes or something like this. And then we'll be back on with potato chip taste test. And I'm talking about like amazake (sweet fermented rice drink), chocolate. Like some weird stuff in there. Chocolate potato. Chocolate potato. So thanks everybody, see you again soon.

41:39 John Daub: Thanks Avery. Alright, Blackout 310. Give us a shout out if you're ever visiting LA. We missed our first meetup by 2 hours. By 2 hours, it's so close. And I'm missing your second by only 2 days. Oh, poor Blackout. Hey Blackout 310, I'm so sorry. You know, I wanna do meetup every single day. But... Hahaha. Hahaha. When I come to LA, I will let you know. In fact, I'm gonna let everybody know if I come to LA. A lot of people in California have been saying. You gotta make your way to Cali, so... I will... Yeah, Caroline's going, do it, do it. So I'll have to make my way to California. I'm an East Coast guy from the New York, Virginia, Washington, Boston side. So I gotta get to the West Coast. Alright everybody, we'll be back in a little bit. Keep watching, but not this Black Squad. And don't forget to subscribe to our channel. And if you don't, you're gonna get a notification. See ya, everybody. If you don't, the notifications come, right? Cause it's chip time. That's amazake potato chips on the top there. I'm really wondering about that one.
