Summary

Tokyo by Motorcycle Looping around the Imperial Palace Gardens

Overview

In this live stream, John Daub is joined by fellow YouTuber and friend Peter von Gomm for a scenic scooter tour around Tokyo's Imperial Palace. Riding Peter's Vespa, they navigate the approximately 5-kilometer loop that encircles the palace moats, offering viewers a unique perspective of central Tokyo from the back of a motorcycle. The ride takes them through prominent districts like Ginza, Yurakucho, and Marunouchi, passing landmarks such as the Imperial Hotel, Hibiya Park, and the British Embassy.

Beyond the sightseeing, the video features lively banter between the two creators. They discuss Peter's upcoming honeymoon to Bali, the nuances of Japan's rainy season, and the historical significance of the Imperial Palace and the Heisei era. John also tests new audio equipment (Rode VideoMicro) to improve live stream quality in windy conditions. The conversation touches on YouTube growth, Patreon support, and the challenges of parking motorcycles in Tokyo.

This video serves as both a virtual tour of one of Tokyo's most iconic locations and a casual look into the lives of expat YouTubers in Japan. It provides practical insights into scooter touring in the city, the layout of the Chiyoda district, and the atmosphere of Tokyo during the rainy season.

Timeline / Chapters

Japan Travel Tips

  • Scooter Touring: Riding a scooter is a great way to see Tokyo, but parking is scarce. Be careful where you park to avoid tickets.
  • Imperial Palace Loop: The outer moat loop is approximately 5 kilometers. It's a popular running course and great for cycling or scooting.
  • Rainy Season: June is the rainy season (tsuyu), but it doesn't rain every day. Hokkaido does not experience the same rainy season.
  • Imperial Palace Gardens: Some areas of the palace grounds are open to the public for free (like the East Gardens), but you need to grab a ticket.
  • Traffic: Traffic around the palace moat is generally smoother than in busy districts like Shinjuku or Shibuya.
  • Audio Gear: When filming outdoors in wind, use a "dead cat" (fuzzy mic cover) to reduce noise.

Japanese Language & Culture Notes

  • Heisei (平成): The era name of Emperor Akihito. John notes that the Emperor is abdicating, marking the end of Heisei (Heisei 30) and the start of a new era.
  • Edo Castle (江戸城): The original castle on the Imperial Palace site was destroyed by fire before World War II.
  • Chidorigafuchi (千鳥ヶ淵): A canal-lined park famous for cherry blossoms. The temperature feels cooler here due to the trees.
  • Marunouchi (丸の内): The business district facing Tokyo Station, known for its brick buildings and modern towers.
  • Era Names: Japan uses era names for years (e.g., Meiji, Taisho, Showa, Heisei). John mentions he arrived in Heisei 10.

Food & Drink Guide

No food was consumed during this video, but the following were mentioned:

  • Craft Beer: John mentions missing craft beer while riding.
  • Bear Curry: Referenced in a past live stream anecdote.
  • BBQ: Peter mentions winning a barbecue at bingo and planning rooftop BBQs.

People

  • John Daub: Host of Only in Japan Go. American expat living in Japan for 30+ years. Driving the conversation and holding the camera gimbal.
  • Peter von Gomm: Guest, fellow YouTuber, and friend. Owner of the Vespa scooter and motorcycle license. Discusses his channel growth and upcoming honeymoon.

Key Takeaways

  • The Imperial Palace outer moat loop is a scenic 5km route popular with runners and cyclists.
  • Motorcycle parking in central Tokyo is difficult and strictly enforced.
  • The rainy season in Tokyo varies; sunny days are still common, and Hokkaido is exempt.
  • Peter von Gomm is aiming for 10,000 subscribers and offers Patreon perks like custom ringtones and stories.
  • The Imperial Hotel has a rich history involving Frank Lloyd Wright and famous guests like Marilyn Monroe.

Notable Quotes

  • 00:01:27 "This helmet smells like you. Maybe your wife will like you more. She might recognize that smell."
  • 00:05:46 "Sometimes getting there is half the fun. Where's the other half then?"
  • 00:10:54 "Rainy season doesn't mean pouring down rain every day. It means some misty days."
  • 00:15:56 "I respect everybody. But I give them no special treatment."

00:00:09 John Daub: Hey everybody, so this live stream we've got a special guest for you. Somebody that you haven't seen on the channel for a while. It's a man who needs no introduction. Don't say it, spray it. Subscribe, Peter von Gomm. Did you make that all yourself?

00:00:29 Peter von Gomm: I did, I did. It took me minutes.

00:00:32 John Daub: It took you minutes? So we're back here with Peter and today we're going to be riding the bike. The beasts. Is that what you call it?

00:00:42 Peter von Gomm: No.

00:00:43 John Daub: Gosh. So we've got helmets, we're going to be taking you around the Imperial Palace. It's about a five kilometer loop, but it might be a little bit longer by scooter, right?

00:00:57 Peter von Gomm: Well, we're not in a car, John. It's called a scooter.

00:01:00 John Daub: Okay, it takes a little bit longer in a scooter. All right, now the show is really going to start properly. You've got me holding the stick. Have you guys seen his gimbal set up? This would make MacGyver proud. Good Lord, dude. Brown tape. This helmet smells like you.

00:01:24 Peter von Gomm: That's a compliment.

00:01:27 John Daub: Maybe your wife will like you more. She might recognize that smell. Whenever you make this face, it's definitely a compliment, dude. All right, so here we go. Peter is going to be the driver because you're the only one with a motorcycle license. This does work, right?

00:01:45 Peter von Gomm: Yeah, it should work.

00:01:46 John Daub: We will be going past many police stations as well just to see, but I have here the gimbal right now has a fuzzy mic, so we should have some pretty darn good audio this time, right? This is an audio test of the new Rode VideoMicro microphone. Peter says it was a pretty good microphone, but there's no 20 decibel booster. Are you ready? Let's get on this. How is the microphone picking up? People can comment and they're not complaining. If they're not complaining, that means they can hear us, I think.

00:02:37 Peter von Gomm: Nice.

00:02:38 John Daub: All right, guys. Let's get ready to roll. Click that like button if you want to see some more Peter von Gomm. Don't just click the like, click the subscribe. There's a link in the description. Peter will only appear if I give him several plugs now. He's now become a big YouTuber. No, seriously though, congratulations. You passed 5,000 subscribers.

00:03:08 Peter von Gomm: Thank you.

00:03:08 John Daub: I was the 5,000th subscriber, by the way. And then I kept deleting it and unsubscribing to piss you off. I was at the top, so it was at 4,999 and 5,000 and it kept going back and forth. That was me. The mic is only directional, so it only looks in one direction. Are you ready to rock and roll? Give me your hand. Where's my gloves? They're checking us out over there. Like, look, there's two YouTubers. And they're human. Look at the funky bus. Qatar Airways. That's an old English bus. What's that doing here?

00:04:23 Peter von Gomm: A Vespa.

00:04:25 John Daub: Peter's got his Vespa. This is my first time riding a Vespa. I'm riding on with this microphone. So all aboard. Don't crash, dude. Are you ready? We're ready. Here we go. Do it, Peter.

00:04:57 John Daub: We're just about to Ginza. Oh, that's where I was the other day. That's the Tokyo Plaza. Beautiful building. Up on the top is an observation deck.

00:05:14 Peter von Gomm: Oh, really?

00:05:16 John Daub: We should be hanging a right now. We can't turn right there. Don't worry. This is the long way around. Our next available right we will turn. So now we're passing through Ginza by Gochome, going towards Hachome. This is towards Shimbashi. We're way past the Imperial Palace. Sometimes getting there is half the fun.

00:05:45 Peter von Gomm: Where's the other half then?

00:05:46 John Daub: Remember the adventure we had in Harajuku? You mean where you got us lost for 30 minutes? You think that was accidental? That was awesome. I remember that fondly.

00:06:04 Peter von Gomm: Fondly.

00:06:08 John Daub: So everybody doing good? How many people can you fit on this scooter?

00:06:11 Peter von Gomm: How many have you tried? Depends on what Asian country we're riding in.

00:06:15 John Daub: Okay, here we go. Turning right. Let me know if the audio goes bad, everybody. We're here for you. We're good. We're in Yurakucho now, going past Ginza corridor. Careful, lady. Sorry, lady. Careful. Ten points for the lady, right? Yeah, this is Shinbashi. Here we go. Turning right. And we're getting closer to the Imperial Palace.

00:07:00 Peter von Gomm: Where do you usually park the motorbike in Tokyo?

00:07:05 John Daub: It depends on where I am. There's not a lot of scooter parking, motorcycle parking in Tokyo. That's one of the big problems. I used to do what this guy is doing right now, but he might get a ticket. Oh, yeah. This guy put his bicycle, you see right there? Not a bicycle. That's a no-no. Oh, check it out. This is cool. We're going underneath the Yamanote line right now. Yeah, that's where the Queen of England and Joe DiMaggio honeymooned with Marilyn Monroe in 1950.

00:07:55 Peter von Gomm: Yeah, Queen of England stayed there. Trump stayed there too. President Trump.

00:08:00 John Daub: The Queen of England did not join them on the honeymoon. We said the Queen of England and Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe were here on their honeymoon. No, there's a comma. Like there's a threesome. A royal menage a trois. That's not what I said. Anyways, in the first floor of the Imperial Hotel are pictures and a snapshot of the events. All of the famous people that have stayed at the Imperial Hotel. It is probably the most famous of the hotels in Tokyo. Well, sadly, the original Imperial Hotel was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

00:08:47 Peter von Gomm: Who's Frank Lloyd Wright?

00:08:47 John Daub: You don't know Frank Lloyd Wright? World famous architect. And he designed the Imperial Hotel. And then they tore it down and rebuilt this one, which is nothing spectacular. But it's a cool hotel to hang out in the lobby. Some want to do a live stream in the Tokyo Imperial Hotel lobby. Actually, I have permission to do that. They said they could film in there if I asked them. So straight ahead is Hibiya Park. So we're turning right here at Hibiya Park. And we're going to continue straight. And we'll see the Imperial Palace on our left. And we'll go slowly around it, all the way around the loop. If you behave, we might even do it twice.

00:09:39 Peter von Gomm: We can't do it twice. I got stuff to do. I'm actually going on honeymoon the day after tomorrow, dude. I'm not going to be here.

00:09:48 John Daub: You have to go to Maggio? I'm going with the queen and Joe. Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe. Yeah, leaving my wife at home. Honeymoons are good, from what I hear. I've never actually had a proper honeymoon. Lots of trips, but nothing designated as a honeymoon. This light's kind of long. All right, here we go. So finally, after 15 minutes, we're getting close to the Imperial Palace. We're enjoying the scenery. You really take the long way. You take the long way around, don't you? It'd be a park straight ahead. Lots of events in there. Beer gardens, Oktoberfests. Not in October or September. In May. It's actually turned into a really beautiful day here in Tokyo. This taxi won't let us pass. The English-style taxis. So one thing to point out, it is rainy season right now in Japan.

00:10:52 Peter von Gomm: Hokkaido doesn't have a rainy season.

00:10:54 John Daub: So if you come to Japan during the rainy season, you're going to have a rainy season. Hokkaido is a safe bet. However, that said, there's often times during the rainy season where the weather is fantastic, like today. So rainy season doesn't mean pouring down rain every day. It means some misty days. It can be a bit overcast. Here we are, the Imperial Palace. It's much faster. It's much better when you're going by it at warp speed because, yeah, it's kind of boring. It's just a moat. But when you go by it fast, it's more than a moat. It's a moat that goes by real fast. So this is actually not... We have to go left to get closer to the Imperial Palace. This is one of the outer moats. This is the first one. Tokyo Station is now on the right side. That took a while to get back here. But traffic seems to go a lot faster around the moat. This is another reason why I like this area. Tokyo is a really crowded city, but in the center of the city, because this is where a lot of gardens are and the Imperial Palace is, it's a lot more relaxed than in other areas of the city, I think. Like Shinjuku, Shibuya, Harajuku. I kind of avoid this place, so I don't mind walking around here. Yeah, people are inside doing business in their office buildings and stuff. They're doing their business. So we're going to go left here, and that'll take us right to the front of the Imperial Palace.

00:12:17 Peter von Gomm: Can we knock on the door?

00:12:18 John Daub: Yeah, why not? You got permission to film there, too? Do you know the Emperor? His Majesty? The dropper? Joe DiMaggio? Marilyn Monroe? The Queen? Hey, now, calm down, calm down. So, yeah, the Emperor is abdicating next year, which will end the Heisei period. I came into Japan in Heisei 10, and now it's Heisei 30, so 20 years ago. And when the new Emperor comes, there's going to be a new period. So we had the Meiji period, the Taisho period, the Showa period. The only-in-Japan period. And now we're not sure what next year is going to be called after he abdicates. So next year is the last Heisei year, I think, right?

00:13:07 Peter von Gomm: Yep.

00:13:08 John Daub: Or is it this year? It's hard to say. Straight ahead is the palace. It is a beautiful day. It's nice and warm. This is the middle of the rainy season, so we have rain like every single day, but today is unique. It's fantastic. I love it because around it is just lots of open parks and open spaces, and there's you can see there, a green area. There's people laying on the grass, taking it easy. This is how you guys get on the grass. Here you can't. They've fenced it in a little bit so you can't enjoy it. All right. Going right. We'll take it slowly. You all got your seat belts on? Hey, he's got a Vespa too. That's a Vespa too. See that? Back there. There's just one more classy person. There's more than one Vespa. I thought this would be the only one. Oh, now you can see. Turn the camera around. Now you can see there's a lot of runners. This is one of my favorites. It's no traffic lights. That's why it's sort of popular, and you can see there's the runners going at it. All three of them are slower than this motorbike, though. And you said it's 5 kilometers, the loop?

00:14:31 Peter von Gomm: The loop is yeah. It's almost 5 kilometers exactly.

00:14:40 John Daub: My friend Joseph Tame, who runs the Tokyo Marathon every year with a live camera, he told me he lives near the Imperial Palace. Not in it. But he told me that he takes 5 kilometers loop. I believe him. Joseph's not one to lie. Hey, I saw a tourist. Are you showing the wall? You can see the moat on the left side. The wall, which was built. It's still the original wall. But the Edo Castle, which I did another live stream on, Edo Castle was destroyed before World War II from a fire. Here's one of the popular entrances. Yeah, there is a little bit of algae. It's blooming. Blooming daisies. It really is blooming. Some blooming algae. Hey, that guy's got a motorbike, too.

00:15:53 Peter von Gomm: Do you respect other motorcyclists?

00:15:56 John Daub: I respect everybody.

00:15:58 Peter von Gomm: Well said.

00:16:00 John Daub: Well said. But I give them no special treatment. Even the Queen of England? All right, we're going to keep going around. There's some tourists right there. I don't think they're from these parts. We'll give you your first clue.

00:16:27 Peter von Gomm: So, in case you're just joining, we are on Peter von Gomm's scooter with John Daub. And we are riding around the moat which surrounds the Imperial Palace in Tokyo. We're running from the law, baby. So, it's about a five-kilometer loop. And we have just begun it.

00:16:49 John Daub: So, sit back, relax. We began it 20 minutes ago. Enjoy yourselves. Is that what you're saying? That was just a warm-up. Sit back, relax. Oh, here's one of the entrances to the garden. Here's another entrance. This is one of the entrances. Now, there are some places of the Imperial Palace that you can go into. Peter, can I have your shirt? They like your subscribe button shirt. I think that's what von was talking about too. I'll have some made up. Are you serious? So, over there is a bridge. Now, you can go into the side of the palace where there's a garden. It's free to go in there. You just got to grab a little ticket thing. I did a live stream on this about three months ago. Showing off at the site where the ruins are. Things where Edo Castle used to be. I think it's called, Why Tokyo Doesn't Have a Castle. Osaka has a reconstructed castle.

00:16:46 Peter von Gomm: Are you sad that Tokyo does not have a castle?

00:17:50 John Daub: No. Because you have your castle, right? And we did a house tour. We did his house tour last year. That was fun. By the way, hey. Happy anniversary to me.

00:18:00 Peter von Gomm: Oh, happy anniversary to me. Because one year ago exactly was the very first YouTube live stream that I did with John at Akihabara. That vending machine. That's why you wanted to eat the bear curry. So, it's been one year in the making. My channel is not one year old, but my first live stream.

00:18:23 John Daub: I told you to do a YouTube channel a year ago. You have like a million subscribers if you'd taken the advice. Now you only have 5,896. Are you keeping track? Man. I'm number 5,000. Everything above is 8,000. I'm number 5,000. We're like 800 people and we're too slow. Thanks, Caroline. So yeah, so if you haven't subscribed, please subscribe. Also, I have a Patreon account now. And YouTube has still not monetized my videos.

00:18:58 Peter von Gomm: Are you kidding? I'm not. It's been 8 months now.

00:19:03 John Daub: Now we can kind of see the higher walls around the moat of the Imperial Palace. Peter does have a Patreon. I've been sharing that. Cecil writes in here, this is the thank you for all the great ideas to the next time you come to Japan. Thanks, man. There's a lot of construction going on and I think this has a lot to do with the 2020 Olympics. Next time we should do a live stream around the 2020 Olympic Stadium. That would be cool. There's the entrance to the expressway on the left side. Yeah. We're now at Hirakawa-mon, right?

00:19:43 Peter von Gomm: Yep, we are. And the British Embassy is going to be up on the right. We'll go by the British Embassy. This is called Chidorigafuchi (Chidori-ga-fuchi, canal-lined park). Chidorigafuchi is a really beautiful area for the cherry blossoms and it's nice. The temperature totally changes when you go through it because it's all treed in.

00:20:08 John Daub: Yeah, it's a beautiful part of the tour. And up here is the luckiest policeman in Tokyo. You see him? He just stands there and just chills out. Yeah, right on the left side, the police officer just chills out. Yeah, he's just chilling out. And then there's a lot of people chilling out under the trees. Great spot for the cherry blossoms. This is a wonderful running course that people are going around. It goes through many stages. It's like oh, and then this is where it opens up. You start to see it, guys. This is around Hirakawa-mon. It opens, the moat opens up and you have a beautiful sweeping view of the Imperial Palace. If you look on the Google Earth, you can look down at it. You can see this. This is the divide between the city and the Imperial Palace on the left side and on the right side. When we go down now, we're taking a left. When we go down, it's going to seem... You're going to be able to see it open up a little bit.

00:21:03 Peter von Gomm: Is it getting hot?

00:21:03 John Daub: Yeah. Where are you going to put it? Tight around my waist. That's where I'm riding. Don't take up too much of my space here. Not your space, my waist. Okay, well, it's pretty tight back here. So has my waistline. Yeah. All that craft beer. Yeah. That's great. Okay. All right, guys. We'll be right back. See you. I haven't had any crafties in a while.

00:21:28 Peter von Gomm: Nothing gets past you. I'm dude. Except for the carbohydrates. I have been barbecuing quite a bit actually. I won that barbeque at bingo. Oh yeah, we get to do a barbeque on your roof. I don't think we've had one yet. We're gonna do one with everybody last year but never.

00:21:48 John Daub: Okay, here's the British Embassy on the right. The British Embassy everybody. Live the Queen. The Queen once stayed at the Imperial Hotel. That's all I have to say about that. That's a different story. Oh man, we got a big truck coming behind us. Mommy. Carolyn's going through the entire color range right now. Thank you Carolyn. Okay, now here's where it opens up. You see it? Uh, it's just a stunning open view of the city. Looking down and towards Chiyoda-ku. This is where all the government buildings are down there. Sometimes you see helicopters taking off. There's a helipad on the top of that building. Straight ahead. National Theater.

00:22:40 Peter von Gomm: Yeah, that's where my wife danced in there once.

00:22:42 John Daub: Oh, really? She danced in the National Theater once. Oh, I love the exhaust fumes in the morning. So yeah, this is a nice, oh jeez. Almost lost part of my advertising. Here comes a Ferrari on the right. No way. Oh yes. Rocket. Pass him. Repeat, repeat or go. Pass him. I've got it floored man. It's just not. Vespa baby go. This Vespa doesn't have the pony power. Oh. It's a Ferrari. It's like Malibu Grand Prix. Okay, look over here on the left. Or is it a Lambo? That's a Ferrari. Okay, just going back to the Imperial Palace. I like on this side they have a lot of pine trees. Yeah, that's Kasumigaseki right there. That building is, oh we lost the Lambo. That was a Ferrari dipstick. I had, because I had two Lambos 48 hours ago in another live stream. I called them Ferraris. The internet went wild. They have their own like cell phone towers. But if you look over to the left back at the Imperial Palace, which is what this live stream is sort of about. It's still on the left. We've been going around in a circle. This is Sakuradamon?

00:24:03 Peter von Gomm: Sakuradamon I think.

00:24:08 John Daub: I forget. It's a station that I never take. Sakuradamon. Yeah, Sakuradamon. Uh, it's on the Yurakucho Line. Yeah. It's a 488. Here we go. 488 Ferrari. Okay. Coming around here. This is a pretty cool station. It looks like, because you've got the city in the distance on the left. And we've got nature. We're wrapping around nature on the left side. And then the city starts to open up. You're gonna see Ginza straight ahead, which is used to be the route of the old Tokyo Marathon that we ran. We'd run past here and go straight into Ginza. It was pretty cool to go through the gardens into the, back into the city.

00:25:07 Peter von Gomm: Which route do you want to take? The, back to the, back to the station.

00:25:12 John Daub: Okay. So, or do you want to? You can stay on this. But, I think we missed all the cool cars. That's a pretty cool blue car. You don't see many colored cars in Tokyo. It's usually very subdued colors. People don't want to stick out. But, recently, I guess in the last 10 years, more colored cars. Used to be that after the World War II, cars had to be black or white. I never, we didn't see any non black or white colors. Okay. So, we're going to the left. Now we're taking the left here. The copper. All right. Now we're going past the Imperial Palace on the left side. You can see the really spacious green, famous site too. This bridge here. It's really beautiful to look into the Imperial Palace from that viewpoint. Um, a lot of tour groups go past there. Wide open ground.

00:26:26 Peter von Gomm: Peter has hung a right. He's going towards Tokyo Station now.

00:26:30 John Daub: You get tired?

00:26:31 Peter von Gomm: Not at all. With me? Riding on the back? No, not at all. Not at all. I'm used to having dead weight on the back.

00:26:37 John Daub: Hey, now! Um. My weight's still growing. It's alive. Can't wait to see what you look like when you come back from Bali. Oh, geez. To be in Elvis stage. Well, you've been to, the reason we're going to Bali is because you planted the seed of Bali in my wife's mind. It's great. At the wedding. It's great. Now you're going to have a great time. Um, however, live streaming will prove difficult, I imagine. Challenging. Because of the bad Wi-Fi? I tried. And it just didn't work out. Do they have 4G there? Mmm, not sure about that. But you might want to look into, like, a pocket Wi-Fi when you get to the airport. That might help. Um, yeah, so we're heading back up towards Tokyo Station now. And we're going to pull into the newly renovated side. The modern Marunouchi side.

00:27:32 Peter von Gomm: Modern emergency.

00:27:32 John Daub: I can already see the trains and the straightaway, now that the stupid truck blocked our view. So we're going straight to the JR Line. So behind us is now the Imperial Palace. We've put the Imperial Palace behind us now, we're going back to Tokyo Station. So we're just back, guys. Between the buildings, this brick building is also historical. It used to be the headquarters. And now the company built this tower. I can't remember what the name of the company is. They keep this wall around and behind it. I'm not sure what that says. Now we're coming back into modern Marunouchi side. I was here yesterday. This is where Helena, who watches the show, she said hi to me by going, Oh crap, it's you! Which cracks me up. I put a picture of it on Instagram. Really funny. And now, on the other side of Peter's helmet, you can see Tokyo Station, the old facade on the right side. Which is now a hotel, yeah. Which is now, part of it is a hotel. There's the post office. It's very expensive. Pricey hotel. Hey, Nosh, thanks for the heads up on that. We just passed 80,000 subscribers. Wow, nice. So, congratulations to all of you. Is it okay to go between the cars like this?

00:29:12 Peter von Gomm: Yeah, I think.

00:29:14 John Daub: I think it's illegal in some states in the U.S. Okay, we're going to, I don't know where we're going to end this. But let's try to get to the front part of the station if we can. We don't want you to get arrested and break any laws. You ever got any tickets?

00:29:28 Peter von Gomm: Breaking the law, breaking the law. Somebody said I look like Rob Halford from Judas Priest.

00:29:35 John Daub: Yeah. When you wear your glasses, you look like that dude from the Terminator, the second one. Oh, maybe. This is where I was 24 hours ago. Totally different weather. Oh, man, my foot is asleep. You're talking to PDG, bro. Yeah, I'm talking to the PDG. Safety first. Peter, this is pretty cool. Turn the mic around, get some Peter. How long have you been a motorcycle rider?

00:30:07 Peter von Gomm: Well, not exactly. I got a dirt bike when I was a teenager against my parents' consent. It was not a street legal bike, but I took it out into the sticks and rode it. And then I came to Japan, and maybe after my second year here, I got a little scooter. And then progressively got hooked and got bigger bikes. And yeah.

00:30:31 John Daub: So you went on a bigger and better thing. Yeah. I used to have a scooter, but it was the kind that you'd have to use your leg to kick off. And it wasn't as cool. Like a kickboard?

00:30:40 Peter von Gomm: Yes. Was that what you call it?

00:30:41 John Daub: We called them scooters. Yeah, yeah. Well, yeah. I think. You call them kickboards. I called them scooters. Peter, my dad thought you were an action star at first. This is from Amoyuki in the Philippines. I don't think he. I don't see you as an action star. You don't have enough muscle tone. What do you mean? It's growing. It was bigger last time. I don't know. Or am I? I should go get some glasses. I need glasses, man. My eyes have gotten so bad. Yeah? Really bad. But yeah. So. What? I don't know. Just like compliment. Your shirt is. You really are fighting to get that 10,000 subscriber number. Come on, people. Do me a solid. I'd be happy. I've got five. I'm going to sit in a stalemate like 5800. Yeah, you've been stuck there for a while. And so my dream. Ten thousand subscribers. Is that a big deal?

00:31:37 Peter von Gomm: That's my birthday. We got two months to do it. So call your friends. Call your aunt Lucy.

00:31:43 John Daub: Wait, hold on. It's backwards. Deborah, by the way, thank you very much. Deborah just gave 80 bucks for 80,000 subscribers. Oh, wow. Nice. I'm like, that's incentive to keep going to a million. Yeah, absolutely. So now it's not backwards. What's your channel called? Now you can call it. You can see it. Your channel is called Peter von Gomm. My name is Peter von Gomm, sorry. And I would like you to subscribe and help me reach my goal of 10,000 subscribers by August 23rd. So we got a little more than two months. What will you do if you get 10,000? Do you have a special episode or something planned?

00:32:17 Peter von Gomm: I will be giving out some freebies. Like free? I'm going to share some of my abilities.

00:32:28 John Daub: Okay. Okay. Now I'm going to get a little done with the good peeps. And we got a security guy heading over here. So he's probably going to say, I doubt my license or something.

00:32:31 Peter von Gomm: Oh really? Let's just wait. Yeah, there's a guy coming. So probably because I'm parked here on the non-street. Here he comes now. Do you speak Swahili? Let's speak Swahili to him. He's totally going to bust you down. Yeah. So we'll just take it into the street. If he, he's going to say something. So we'll just take it into the street. Oh, okay. Okay. Okay. I got it. All right. Okay. I'll just put it on the street here. You can say goodbye. I've still got to go. I'll put it right here.

00:33:12 John Daub: I hope that you guys like this mic. This is a new mic that we bought just for this kind of situation when there's a lot of wind. We're still kind of learning it. We had some audio problems because the dead cat, this thing right here, it started coming off. So it was halfway off because the wind was pushing it off. So I have to find a strap to keep it attached to the front of it. But in general, it seemed like people really enjoyed the improved audio quality. I'm just wondering whose cat that is, man.

00:33:40 Peter von Gomm: Well, that's not Barney's color, so you don't have to worry. Barney's safe at home.

00:33:44 John Daub: Peter's got a cat named Barney.

00:33:46 Peter von Gomm: Yeah, she's a cutie.

00:33:48 John Daub: Anything else that you want to talk about before we end this live stream? I'm not going to see you again until July, dude. Unless you call in and ruin my honeymoon by calling in on a live stream. A live stream from the room. It's not that funny. No, I'm very excited for you. Bali's a great place. You're going to have an awesome time. The place I recommended, Maya, is fantastic. And great food, great people. The Balinese are fantastic people. So friendly and sincere. That's the other thing.

00:34:22 Peter von Gomm: More sincere than you? They smile a lot, but they're sincere. They're sincere smiles. Are they humble? Very humble. Very humble.

00:34:32 John Daub: Click. This means click. It's air. The arrow is your mouse. You put it right on your nipple, too. That's not... The arrow is the mouse. You bring the mouse to the button that says subscribe. I'm pretty sure there's going to be an impact. You'll get maybe one or two people who will subscribe. People supporting you from this channel. It's okay, dude. You have a good support. So just to point out, yesterday I did a live stream. If you're interested in learning more about Tokyo, you can check out the live stream. I'll put the link right here. And yeah, it was fun. I like these. I like it. If you also hit that like button. Don't forget to hit the like button. You can... Don't smash it. People say smash. I really care about your smartphone because without it, you won't be able to watch unless you're watching on an Apple TV or something.

00:35:15 Peter von Gomm: Oh, is that a humorous joke you just made?

00:35:17 John Daub: Well, no. One of the supporters said that I shouldn't say smash because it brings down... People actually might literally take that and smash it. So I should be... They shouldn't be subscribing to your channel if they take that literally. Well, I do care about the people. I'm not a huge fan of people and their phones. So don't smash it. Just lightly click the like button. Tickle it gently. Yeah. And what Peter and I would like is for you to write in the comment section below any suggestions that you have for us to do a live stream. Don't do something like cheesy like go to a Pokemon shop or something like that. Although that might be something that I would do, that's not something that Peter knows anything about. Do you know any Pokemon at all besides Pikachu?

00:35:58 Peter von Gomm: Yeah. Uh... And the yellow one.

00:36:06 John Daub: That's Pikachu. Oh, yeah. Okay. That's the one I know. See? And you have a son. He knows all of them. I know. Hey, man. I'm spending my time creating videos. I don't have time to like scour Pokemon chat rooms and crap. Didn't you play Pokemon Go last year?

00:36:21 Peter von Gomm: No, I didn't. But I am a Pokemon master voice.

00:36:24 John Daub: Oh, you do have... He did the Google's Pokemon contest. Yeah. He did the Google's Pokemon contest thing two years ago. Yeah. And he... And that had 20 million views. They get the idea. They get the idea. It's backwards though. It's backwards. We'll work it out. We'll work it out. Yeah. If we get to 300 likes, I'll extend this by another minute. But right now, I'm tempted to just say goodbye because I actually have to do...

00:36:52 Peter von Gomm: Yeah. You got stuff to do.

00:36:52 John Daub: I actually got stuff to do and have a dentist appointment. I should get my teeth taken care of. Dentists in Japan are okay. Health insurance pays for the dentists here. Yeah. Yeah. I was surprised. It's a very... It's a nominal fee. But... But health insurance is not a nominal fee. Health insurance is not a nominal fee. So don't think of it as a great deal. No, we... It ain't. Yeah. You pay... How much is your health insurance?

00:37:11 Peter von Gomm: Like 300 bucks a month or something?

00:37:13 John Daub: Are you kidding me? It's like $800 a month. Oh, for the whole family? Well, no. For me. For me. But... What? Yeah. Yeah. Don't get me started on that, man. Oh, okay. It caps. It caps out. Oh, here comes the Hawaii team. Oh, okay. Yeah. Now, what is this all about? They're all on Hawaii insurance. It's just a family on vacation. Some people like to match. So they don't get lost? They can find each other? Maybe. I have an idea. Let's all wear Hawaiian shirts when we're in Tokyo. That way we can find each other in the masses amounts of people. Tread lightly because we have several wonderful people who say aloha from Hawaii. Nothing wrong with that. Yes. Although it is so much... I wasn't saying anything wrong with it. I like Hawaiian shirts. It is somewhat strange. All right. So we didn't get the 300 likes, so we cannot extend this.

00:38:04 Peter von Gomm: Is that how it works?

00:38:04 John Daub: It's like we have just instantly cut it off now. I want to thank Moe Yuki and Deborah and everybody who gave in super chats, Jim and... I'll go back and thank everybody, Jim and Nosh for the wonderful moderating. Yeah. Do you have moderators on your live streams?

00:38:24 Peter von Gomm: I... Eric, thank you very much. Not sanctioned moderators, but people do... I have noticed some people come through and help out. Yeah. I've had offers. Thank you to Caroline. I'm just not streaming often enough to... Cecil, Cassie, thank you. Enjoy a snack on me.

00:38:41 John Daub: Nice. Peter is never going to see that though. Literally? Peter... No, no, no. Don't literally eat it on poor Cassie. That's gross. We don't do that here. Peter, can I have your shirt? What are some of the perks on your Patreon? Because I also have a Patreon. We both have Patreon. You just started it. Yeah, I did. So... What are some of the perks that you get?

00:39:02 Peter von Gomm: Well, at the moment I'm offering two things. One is I'm creating stories that are not available, uploading stories that are twice... Once or twice a week. So far about once a week. So stories you can't hear elsewhere that I'm reading and offering on there. And also ringtones. So for the top level tier, you get a monthly ringtone that's my voice and original creation.

00:39:31 John Daub: If I had a ringtone for me... If I supported your channel, what would I get? Can you do that? Okay. So if you would get... It depends. So the top tier... What would it sound like? Can you give me a sample? I want a sample before I buy. Maybe I'll upload a sample. You can trust me. People know my voice and what I'm capable of. So you're in for a surprise. You've now reached John's phone. I'm Peter von Gomm. Subscribe to my channel. AKA Dr. Evil. I don't know. I'm Dr. Evil. So... Ringtones and original stories. And coming up, there will be another tier which will be sponsoring children's books. So you get... I will read a children's book, make a video, and you are the sponsor of that book. And you will have a shout out in the book and in the video rather. And yeah, so that's in the works right now. But please just take a look at the Patreon page. Type in my name, Peter von Gomm, and you will see what that looks like. And I will see what it's all about. And I think we have nine people so far. So yeah. That's pretty cool. Yeah, it's great. I really appreciate it. I've been encouraging Peter to do more and more with his channel, more with his... And to start Patreon and try to do more social media stuff. And he's getting there. Your Instagram has a lot of followers too. It's starting to get up there too. Yeah. Yeah. So it's good on you.

00:40:54 Peter von Gomm: Thank you. Thank you. I appreciate the push for sure. Yeah. Bring Joji in more. I think they're coming to see Joji more than they're coming to see... Probably. PVG. That's smart. I watch for Joji. I'm always wondering what he's doing. Moe writes in, I love Peter's war success narration.

00:41:10 John Daub: Oh, thank you. Thank you. Yeah. Actually, I've got something, a newish format that actually John turned me on to that will be coming out in my next video. And I'm just finishing up editing now.

00:41:22 Peter von Gomm: What's that? It's inspired by the sandwich video.

00:41:26 John Daub: I've been telling him to use... Come over here. No, not you. Just stay there. I want to talk to you. I want to talk to the people. So I've been telling him like that. We did a sandwich video and I remember writing the script and I said, this sound a whole lot... Matthew McConaughey voice. This shirt sound a whole lot better if Peter von Gomm was saying that. So I sent him over the script and he improved it maybe like 3%. You changed a couple of words to make it sound a little bit better. 300%. You did not... Well, your voice improved at 300% because my voice does not have the same appeal to make sandwiches sexy. But using your skills... Why am I talking to you? I'm talking to... Using his skills. I wanted to enhance the video, the sandwich video. I'll try to put a link up here. You definitely check it out, especially like 2 minutes and 30 seconds into it. And he did an awesome job with it and that video reached a million views in like two weeks. It was pretty crazy. Yeah. It was fun to make. It was fun to make. Yeah. But I encourage them to like, just take random objects and make it better with your voice using lighting and beautiful visuals. and a nice voice and like I would subscribe to that. You take an average everyday thing and you make it better. And. That's what's coming up.

00:42:39 Peter von Gomm: Oh, so you are doing that? Yeah, the next video will be incorporating. Tell us more. What are you doing? Well, it's a food video. And that's what you just explained about, you know, using the voice to compliment and to explain. Use what God has given you.

00:43:01 John Daub: What God gave me. How much of that is talent? I always wanted to ask this. How much of this is talent? How much of this is hard work?

00:43:08 Peter von Gomm: Well, funny you should ask John. I'm just, I don't know. I was just curious. Funny you should ask. Well, actually I was just thinking about this on the way over here today. Were you? Well, cause I hear, I listen to other narrators, not just locally here, but like when I hear videos and things and I know that I have, I've been given some abilities, beyond what the average narrator does or what the average person does. But, but so it's in there. I think it's all in there, but it's coaxing it out and also fine tuning it. And also just time over time. Is there a great narrator in everybody or am I just a lost cause?

00:43:51 John Daub: No, I think, well, every voice is unique and you have to find what's in your wheelhouse. A lot of people try to do things that they can't do. I'm sorry to break in, but are you doing your narrator voice right now?

00:44:01 Peter von Gomm: No, this is just my normal voice.

00:44:06 John Daub: So your normal voice sounds like a narrator voice though. But if I was to talk with a narrator's voice, it might be something like this. Oh, can you do that hum that the DTS, you know, like the Sony surround sound, they like using your voice, you get that extra. The THX? Yeah, THX. Can you do that just with your voice without the enhancement? Can you THX it? Is that even a verb? Can you THX it? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, it is. You can THX. Can you give that a little more THX? Yeah. I hear that from the booth often. Really? Okay. Not really. I was curious about that. So basically a narrator, somebody can become a better narrator with hard work, but it's about bringing it out. Yeah, and knowing what you are capable of. What's, like I said, what's in your wheelhouse, what best matches your voice? So for example, you don't have the same low voice that I have. No, I'm like a whiny, raspy sound. But your voice is great for animated things, like exciting things where you're explaining about stuff and, you know, cartoon characters. That kind of stuff is more... This is like a Hollywood compliment, right? Like, you know what I mean? Hollywood compliment, like it has this smash at the end, you know, where it takes you down. Deborah chimed in here. I want to thank Deborah again, and BS Fatboy's in the house. So thank you for that. Yo, Fatboy. Yeah. So Deborah wanted to shout out to her friends in Pakistan, and Mix from Philippines writes in here, finally nice to catch another live stream. Thank everybody. Yes. You know, I think it's great that you're using YouTube now to tell great stories. This is the idea we've been talking about, and you're starting to get into your element now. So I do ask people to subscribe because I think he makes good... You actually edit the videos on like these live streams, but you do make really good content. You put a lot of thought and effort into it, and I'm also a viewer. Thank you. I also support my friends Kevin Riley and Jennifer Julian. They also started YouTube because I've kind of pushed them a little bit, but Kevin is doing really great things with cooking, and Jennifer is traveling and doing stuff with food and wine and beer and dogs and cats and animals, everything. And voila.

00:46:28 Peter von Gomm: And voila. That's her favorite. Voila. Voila. Yeah.

00:46:31 John Daub: So, Peter, thank you very much for this.

00:46:33 Peter von Gomm: My pleasure. My pleasure. Enjoy your honeymoon.

00:46:36 John Daub: I'm excited for you. Have a great time. You wish you could join us, don't you? But... Well, five's a crowd. You've already got DiMaggio and Monroe with you. Yeah. And the queen. So... All too nice tight clothes here. We'll just leave it at five. We'll leave it at five. Yeah. Well, thank you very much for loaning us, you and the Vespa. Pleasure. We appreciate it. Thanks, guys. We'll get the plug right there. Yes, that's us waiting for you on the other side of Peter von Gomm. That's right. A big kiss. All you gotta do is click it. Just gotta click it. Just click your nipple. And click the bell. Ring that bell, too, so you get instant notifications. Right. That's my back. But definitely click the bell. I'm not... Well, thank you very much. You want to ride away into the sunset? Is that how you want to say goodbye or just say...

00:47:18 Peter von Gomm: No. I'll give you a high five.

00:47:20 John Daub: Give me a high five. Maybe show them the cool building on the way out, the dome. We did that yesterday. We did a live stream through there yesterday. Oh, you did? Okay. All right. Well, thanks very much. High five. All right. Bring it in, bro. Thank you. See you, guys. All right. Take care of yourself. Bye-bye. I want to say goodbye. Thank you to all of you. This has been the last 20 seconds. Well, that's better for James Aaron. Happy honeymoon, Jonathan. I thank you very much. We really appreciate it. Wow, that was a nice surprise. Thank you, everybody, for the really wonderful Super Chats. I'll be on live streaming again tomorrow. I'm trying to get a video in because I'm in Bali. I probably won't be live streaming. Peter, take care. Bye-bye. Take care of yourself. See you, guys. Don't overdo it. Okay?

00:48:00 Peter von Gomm: I won't. I'll come back with my helmet. Bye, guys. Bye, everybody.

00:48:05 John Daub: Bye, Peter. Peter, I got your helmet. That's a different problem.
