Last Last Day in Bali Flight Canceled to Tokyo
Last Last Day in Bali Flight Canceled to Tokyo
Overview
In this special travel vlog, John Daub shares an unexpected extension to his honeymoon in Bali, Indonesia. Originally scheduled to return to Tokyo, John and his wife Kanae find themselves stranded at the Intercontinental Hotel Bali Jimbaran due to a volcanic eruption at Mount Agung. The eruption caused widespread flight cancellations, delaying their departure by 22 hours. Rather than complain, John embraces the situation, showcasing the stunning beauty of the hotel grounds, the luxurious pools, and the local wildlife.
The video serves as a impromptu hotel tour and a farewell to Bali before their midnight flight back to Japan. John highlights the local fruit, specifically the mangosteen, sharing a viewer tip on how to select the best ones. The centerpiece of the video, however, is the hotel's resident duck population. John and Kanae spend significant time feeding and interacting with the ducks, whom John humorously dubs "Toby 2.0," referencing his famous crow encounters back in Japan.
This episode offers a glimpse into the unpredictability of travel in Indonesia, the hospitality of the local people, and the silver linings of being stranded in paradise. It concludes with John expressing gratitude to his Indonesian viewers and promising a return to Japan-based content once they land in Tokyo.

Full Transcript
00:00:00 John Daub: Welcome to the Intercontinental Hotel here in Bali at Jimbaran Beach. I wanted to say hi to everybody. It's been a while since I did a live stream and I might be out of practice. But since this is our last day of honeymoon and essentially the honeymoon is over, we have some news. We were stranded here because the volcano erupted up on the north part of this island in Bali. It delayed or cancelled flights for two days. And it had a ripple effect, meaning that our flight, which was supposed to take off last night, was delayed 22 hours. So we had to spend one more night here. And if you could see, this hotel is so beautiful, we did not complain. There's the sea, the seaside in the distance. Here's the beautiful lobby. Wow, just inside this Intercontinental Hotel, it's absolutely beautiful.
00:01:19 John Daub: So I wanted just to catch up with you, just to say hi. Let you know that the streams coming in Japan are coming, but we're just not back in Japan yet. And Kanae right now is opening up my favorite fruit and hers too, I think. You know what this is? It's a mangosteen. And it's really good. These cost about $2 for one kilogram, so they're pretty cheap right now. It tastes sort of like between a grape and a strawberry.
00:02:14 John Daub: One of the viewers told me a shortcut or some kind of secret information here. You see these here? One, two, three, four, five, six. So this on the bottom of this tells you when you open it up how many segments are inside of the mangosteen. This little patch on the bottom will tell you how many are inside. It's really interesting. We've been snacking on these all day. Do you want one more? She doesn't want to be in the live stream. She doesn't have her makeup on. That's all right.
00:02:55 John Daub: So I want you to hang out with us because I want to take you through this hotel a little bit and show you how beautiful it is. It's so beautiful. I heard that Queen Elizabeth or Queen Victoria, when she heard about the mangosteen, she asked the explorers, the people who are sailing to this part of the world to bring one back. And anybody who could bring one back that was still edible would receive a queen's ransom. Nobody could ever do it. Enjoying the fruits of Indonesia. Now you can eat mangosteen in Thailand. You can eat it in Singapore. You can't escape it. Oh, it's so good. I always get the one with the seeds. Not all of them have seeds. Oh, man, that's so good.
00:04:03 John Daub: So I don't know how much battery this gimbal has. I haven't charged it in about a week. But I want to take you around this hotel, just give you kind of an idea of what paradise looks like. Because we've stayed in three hotels when we were here on our honeymoon. The first one was at The Stones on Kuta Beach. And I stayed at The Stones about four years ago when I worked there. A company had hired me to help them make training videos for the staff. So I worked there for four days filming at The Stones Hotel. It was a beautiful place. And we went back there for two nights. Then we went to Maya Ubud. Adore it. If you follow me on Instagram, you'll be able to take a look at this place. It's just incredible. And then after we went to the Maya Ubud, we came here to the Intercontinental Hotel in Jimbaran. And it's just been an overwhelmingly beautiful place to spend, even if it has to be one extra night because the volcano has canceled the flights. Hey, we have to reschedule some stuff back home. But we're not going to complain that much.
00:05:06 John Daub: So let's take a look over here towards the pool area. Oh, my gosh. So let's go over to the pool area. And I want to show you what this place looks like. The lobby is really beautiful. We did get one massage at the spa, which I thought was beautiful. Make our way downstairs to the pool. And we have some bread that we might be able to feed. They had some musicians playing live music. The Wi-Fi here is pretty strong. This is the start of the pool. It's just incredible. It's huge. Like one of these pools you can see from space. So hopefully you'll be able to check it out. We tried to swim in here. It's so wicked to be swimming inside this. It's like a theme park. It's sort of like Walt Disney World in a way like Epcot Center. But you're living here.
00:07:30 John Daub: This is where we ate breakfast every day. If you've been watching the Instagram posts, you'll know it's like deja vu. We find ourselves at 8 or 9 a.m. eating outside on the corner by the pool in the ocean. And here's the main pool. This has been where we spent a lot of free time just chilling out here at this pool. Let me take you to the front of it. You don't know where the pool ends and the sea starts. It's so close to the beach. It's about 50 meters from the end of the pool to the beach. The beach doesn't have Wi-Fi. So I can't get there. I apologize to the video quality is not perfect, but that's what it looks like. And we spent a lot of time here at the pool chilling. There's sort of a wet bar here so you can get drinks in the pool. That's kind of a neat thing.
00:09:11 John Daub: There's one other thing we wanted to show you, but here's a place where you can get a massage. We haven't tried that. We went to the actual spa to do it, but the massage people said if you do it here, it's a little bit too noisy. So it's very beautiful. And there's some bicycles that you can rent. There's a little pool in a wall. It's about 60 centimeters deep, so it's not as much fun as the big pool. Should we go to the ducks? I don't know if the Wi-Fi is even working right now, so we're going to go to the ducks just for like a minute. And this has been one of the highlights of our trip here at this hotel.
00:10:39 Kanae Daub: Mount Agung [?].
00:11:06 John Daub: All right we're live this is my favorite part. I actually brought some food time for our feathered friends. Watch them come. When they see us they know us. Oh they're sleeping. No, they're taking a nap. You see them down there. Ah they know we're here they're coming to say hi. Come back. All right cross the bridge. Can I open the gate? We got some food for them. Come on guys. Oh they're a little bit shy. Here we go we got some food for you. This has been the best part of the vacation. They're kind of dangerous here. Can I you want some before the hotel staff gets angry? They might tell us to stop we can't help ourselves. You go yeah they stick together. Don't do that. They're gonna attack you. We don't have names but you can tell each one apart by the color in their bills. Some of them have like colored spots on their bills or they have different shapes to their bodies. There's plenty for everybody. Hey now love and peace here. Can I take half take half you can do it. This is Toby resurrected Toby 2.0. So we got cute. I'm feeding one piece for every viewer so there's 250 people here one piece a day so sorry about that. Each one of you gets a piece for the duckies.
00:13:42 John Daub: Now, they're fighting, but really, they're all good friends because they sleep together. They do everything together, these ducks. Actually, this bread is really good. This is from breakfast. Oh, they're getting angry. Okay. That's all the bread we got. Toby did it. Look at it. See the ducks? They all get in a row. They love to quack. But they know us because we've been kind of secretly feeding them for the last few days. Let's go. Are you going to let them in? I think they're going to follow me, though. Oh, they're going to follow me. They go back over this bridge. And you can see in the center of Duck Island is their home. I told you they're going to follow me. Why would you follow her when you could follow me? Come to my room. Oh, my God. They're attacking me. No, I don't even have any more food. They're seriously coming after me. They've stopped. The ducks will stay together. And it's been one of the most incredible.
00:16:03 John Daub: And after they saw I got nothing, they go right to Kanae. It's a duck gang. Duck gang. They are like the mafia. Duck mafia when they're together. Which one is which one is why on and my day? That's the Balinese names. The ducks are ignoring Kanae now. Thanks, Anil. Nice to see you again. I haven't flown the Mavic Pro here. Just one set at the last hotel because the wind has been too heavy. But I might fly it over this hotel before I leave. If I don't get in trouble. Oh, I could just attach this camera to the ducks and let them go for it. But the ducks of the Intercontinental Hotel here are the stars by far.
00:17:13 John Daub: We're going to walk them back to their island. I kind of you should open the gate. Look, I told you these ducks stay together. All right, I'm going to walk them back this way. All right, guys. Go back to Duck Island. This way. They don't go back to Duck Island. No, no, no. Don't go in the water. I'll be going back the hard way. They panic. If one duck does it, they all do it. But usually they'll walk across the gate. I think they were scared. Look what we've done. Kanae that? We scared them. We scared them into going over back to their island the hard way. It's not your fault. Follow the leader. If the first one panics, they all panic. They all follow what the leader does. I'm still not sure which one's the leader. We need more time to assess the situation. Yeah, I think he's the leader. Yeah, the bigger one. Yeah. He's father.
00:18:49 John Daub: So William writes in, hey John, my students will be arriving in Japan next week. First timers. That's awesome. Oh, no, they're going to come back across to the bridge. Look, they're like robots here. Okay, duckies. I'm opening the bridge. They're going to come back across. Can I stay away from them? They're going to come across. It's so cute when you see them come. Go ahead. We're moving back. I'm moving away. Ducks are going to cross. Look, here we go. They forgot that they escaped this side and swam to the other side. And now here they come again. They're coming after us. It's like they completely forgot that they were freaked out by us. This is awesome. So this is why this has been the highlight of this day. This is totally a reason to stay at the Intercontinental Hotel, just for the ducks. Forget the pool and the beach and the food. Just to stay for the ducks.
00:19:51 John Daub: I don't know if you can fly your drone anywhere in Bali. We're kind of close to the airport, believe it or not. They like us. They like you more than they like me. I'm the reason why they jumped into the river. All right, let's see if I can make them go home. Sorry, we don't got anything home. Cross your bridge. Time to go back to Duck Island. Oh, they're going to do it. Look, they're going home. This is awesome. Bye-bye. Why didn't you guys go home this way before? You totally didn't have to. Close the door. You totally didn't have to jump into the river. Kanae, they want out. Yesterday, the wind closed the gate and one of the ducks got trapped behind. And this one duck went over to Duck Island. And he was on the side going, blah, blah, blah. And the whole gang was going this way, communicating to try to get him to come back. Who's going to jump? Will the gang jump in and go over to the one that's left alone? Or will the solo left alone guy jump back in and join the gang? And in the end, I brought out some food and then the solo duck came over and joined the rest of the gang. So this is like a really big reason to come and stay here. And being stranded for an extra night isn't such a bad thing.
00:21:46 John Daub: I've had to move some of the jobs around because I was supposed to be back right now. I was supposed to be in Tokyo and here we are still in Bali. That's okay. You know, sometimes you can't control Mother Nature. And I was telling one of the other people on Patreon. I have some people that follow me on Patreon. And one of the supporters and I said to them, this is the best excuse ever. Sorry, I can't make the meeting. There was a volcano eruption and I can't make it. It's like, you can't argue with that. And it's true because it's in the news. So I can use this as an excuse for staying here for another day. There are some carp in the ponds here. But at night, this place is absolutely beautiful. And I'm going to say goodbye to the ducks. And Kanae is probably going to stay here with the ducks too. I have a feeling.
00:22:41 John Daub: You can bring the ducks if they'll follow us. They're coming. At night, this hotel is absolutely gorgeous. They light it up. It looks like they have torches that are lit all around the lakes. Like these little canals that go through the hotel. Underneath it, you can see. And at night, it's absolutely one of the most beautiful things I've seen. It does remind me of Disney, really. So this is where we started the live stream. We walked across this bridge here. And at night, when the sun is down, they light these things in the center with fire. And it just really illuminates the entire area. It makes it very, very beautiful. And just taking a slow walk around the hotel grounds is like being in a theme park, really. It's a totally different world with the coconut trees. The weather is absolutely perfect. Tokyo is hotter than here, believe it or not. But, you know, I just feel really lucky to be here. We're really fortunate to be here. There's one of the restaurants we usually would eat by the beach. And you can see how nice it is. It's worth every penny. And we saved up a lot to make this trip. So it's been pretty good.
00:24:19 John Daub: I'm sorry I haven't been on. I'll be back streaming live about Japan from tomorrow. It's pretty cool to be live streaming again. We had fun. It was a good week. Back to Japan. I want to go back. No, I don't want to go back to Japan. But I kind of do because I got stuff to do. Midnight quack. Yeah, we're taking the midnight quack flight across from Bali to Tokyo. The flight leaves at 10:30 p.m. Hopefully there's not another eruption. But we will see you back in 24 hours on the other side in Japan. So wherever you are in the world, I got to say goodbye. Have a good day. Good night.
00:25:12 John Daub: I will be buying lots of snacks. Oh, by the way, I just want to thank all of the Indonesian viewers that were welcoming so nice on Instagram. Because I've been putting a lot of videos on Instagram over the last week, some posts. And just the welcoming nature of everybody. The big smiles. I could feel the smiles across all of the Indonesian islands. So thank you very much for the wonderful hospitality. Even though I couldn't meet you because this is a honeymoon. You can't do fan meetups and stuff like that on a trip like this. But we both appreciate it very much. And we have met a couple of people who watched the show when we were in Ubud. And in Kuta Beach, some people stopped us to say hi. So I like that. That was really awesome. But we didn't really have a lot of time to make a meetup for everybody. But hopefully we will be back in Indonesia because it's just such a beautiful country.
00:26:05 John Daub: I think it's a country that I know in the United States we just didn't know a lot about Indonesia. We do in Japan because it's a little bit closer. Same timeline. 12-hour difference from the United States. So yeah, we'll be back here for sure. We want to see the ducks. So we got to be back to see the ducks. The ducks are over there by the way. Duck Island. So we'll be back here to see the ducks. And we got to save money and fly. Got to save up for another trip. Just wanted to say goodbye. Thank you very much for joining us on this live stream wherever you are in the world. Good day. Good night. And see you from Japan.
