Japan Travel Tips

  • Heat Safety: Summer in Tokyo can reach 43°C (109°F). Stay hydrated and seek shade like the viewers huddling under trees.
  • Rail Passes: Consider a JR Rail Pass if traveling long distances (e.g., Tokyo to Hiroshima) but calculate costs based on your specific itinerary.
  • Convenience Stores: Great for budget-friendly meals like onigiri (rice balls) when starting out.
  • Airport Navigation: Watch guides on Narita Airport procedures and buying Suica (IC transport card) cards before arrival.
  • Hidden Gems: Explore neighborhoods like Akabane for nomiya (small bars) and yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) away from main tourist hubs.
  • Museums: The Railway Museum in Saitama is highly recommended for train enthusiasts, featuring real Shinkansen (bullet train) cars.
  • Clothing Sizes: Clothing sizes in Japan run smaller; "XL" in Japan may equate to "M" in the US. Look for "Big and Tall" shops in areas like Bakurocho.
  • Theme Parks: Tokyo DisneySea is unique to Japan and distinct from Disneyland in California.

Japanese Language & Culture Notes

  • Suica (IC transport card): Rechargeable card used for trains and purchases, essential for navigating Tokyo.

00:00:00 John Daub: Hey everybody, so right now I'm in Shinjuku. This is Shinjuku Gyoen National Park. This is one of the big parks in the city of Tokyo. And I'm really blessed to have some amazing viewers, people who watch the show from all over Japan, all over the world. And whenever I get a chance to meet up with some of these people, it's kind of exciting. And Peter and I were doing a live stream today and on Facebook like 24 hours ago, I decided to make a meet up where people that were already here in Japan could meet up with us and say hi. And guess what?

00:30:00 John Daub: People came! And they're over here on this side, so let me take you so we can meet some of the people. But it's one of the hottest days of the city and I have to give everybody credit for coming out on such a hot day. There they are, underneath the tree. That's where I would be. Hey everybody! It's a lot of people. This looks like at the zoo where all the animals are huddled underneath the tree.

00:52:00 John Daub: Coming out here in the sunlight just for a little bit, I can hardly see anybody. Look at all the reluctance now. Everyone doesn't want to come out here. To be honest with you, we already said hi. Peter and I have been here for about 20 minutes. But I want to say thank you to everybody who came out here. Welcome to Japan! Which is really awesome. It looks like 100 people to me, but it's more like about 20 people. And Peter's here as well. He made the trip.

01:30:00 Peter von Gomm: Hi!

01:30:00 Peter von Gomm: Yeah.

01:33:00 Peter von Gomm: Yeah.

01:33:00 John Daub: So what I want to do is introduce you to some of the people who watch this show and if you're okay with that, you could tell us a little bit about Japan and what you've seen on your trip maybe because this helps other viewers too. If you want to, just raise your hand. I will come to you. You don't have to. Hi, what's your name?

01:51:00 Steve Kotsubo: I'm Steve Kotsubo.

01:52:00 John Daub: Hey Steve! From California. Awesome! Welcome. So tell me a little bit about your trip.

01:56:00 Steve Kotsubo: Well, this is our first time ever in Japan. And I knew that my grandparents are from Japan. And I knew that I had to come here and experience the culture. And it's been awesome. It's been a tremendous experience. It's been hot, obviously.

02:10:00 John Daub: Hot.

02:11:00 Steve Kotsubo: Yeah. But we have enjoyed every moment of it. And the people and all of the things that we've been experiencing. The food, obviously, has been wonderful for us.

02:21:00 John Daub: What place did you like the best that you would recommend?

02:24:00 Steve Kotsubo: We actually just got here. So we've been staying in Asakusa.

02:28:00 John Daub: Okay.

02:29:00 Steve Kotsubo: And we've been enjoying the convenience store food right now. And getting a little taste of that. But we're moving on to Hakone. And then we'll go to Kyoto and Hiroshima.

02:40:00 Steve Kotsubo: And so we're excited to experience the food. Especially the ones that John has recommended for us.

02:45:00 John Daub: So you have a rail pass, right?

02:47:00 Steve Kotsubo: Yes.

02:47:00 John Daub: So they have a rail pass. Not everybody here has a rail pass. But it just depends on how long that you're going to stay and what you want to see. You're seeing a lot though down in Hiroshima.

02:56:00 Steve Kotsubo: Yeah. I mean, being the first time here, we obviously want to take advantage of that opportunity.

03:01:00 Steve Kotsubo: And hit the top of the mountain. You know, the most touristy places, obviously.

03:05:00 John Daub: On your first trip. Yeah.

03:07:00 Steve Kotsubo: But yeah, we would obviously like to try some cooler places. But definitely want to hit those places that got a lot of history.

03:17:00 John Daub: Are you enjoying?

03:19:00 Guest: My first time in Japan.

03:22:00 John Daub: Yeah. What's your favorite convenience store food?

03:26:00 Guest: Probably the onigiri (rice ball).

03:28:00 John Daub: Yeah. Onigiri is pretty good. Well, it's nice to see you. You guys look like you're friends. You're having fun. And you haven't even been here that long. All right. Who's next?

03:38:00 Guest: I'll do it.

03:38:00 John Daub: All right. Welcome aboard.

03:40:00 Akira: Hi, everyone. My name is Akira. I actually live in Pennsylvania, but live half of my life in Japan. Since my wife and I started watching John's channel, we've been just rediscovering Japan.

03:53:00 John Daub: Right.

03:53:00 Akira: Because there's so many interesting places that I never even knew existed.

03:57:00 John Daub: And shout out to your wife who told me that her husband would love to meet me and here you are.

04:02:00 Akira: I got that message. Here we are.

04:04:00 John Daub: Hi, Julie. Thanks for your help. Thanks for letting me know about this event. I'm actually supposed to fly back tomorrow.

04:13:00 John Daub: Whoa!

04:14:00 Akira: And I was supposed to work today. I was like, no, this is more important.

04:18:00 John Daub: No, catch your flight and do your job definitely. But what is one place that you would recommend for people to go and visit in Japan?

04:25:00 Akira: Well, there are so many.

04:28:00 John Daub: I know. It's hard. People say, where should I go? It's too many. Everywhere you find something interesting. You know what? There's no place that you shouldn't go. But your first trip to Japan, walking outside your hotel is actually kind of a lot. Right. It's like, wow. Have you gone to Akabane?

04:49:00 Akira: Akabane, hi.

04:50:00 John Daub: Okay. All right. Cool. That place is coming along. I used to work there before, but I didn't know there were so many good, like, nomiya (small bars) and all those, like, yakitori (grilled chicken skewers).

05:01:00 John Daub: That's up there with the big statue of the Shonen Jump character, right?

05:04:00 Akira: Oh, is there?

05:05:00 John Daub: Akabane. See? You know more.

05:11:00 Student: Student living here for two years from Kolkata.

05:16:00 John Daub: And you said that it's hotter?

05:19:00 Student: Than India.

05:20:00 Student: This is hotter than India. Just wanted to point that out. I'm sorry to interrupt you. I'm sorry.

05:24:00 John Daub: I don't know. Still, I think it's hotter than India. Yeah.

05:30:00 Student: But yeah, it helped me, inspired me for Japan.

05:35:00 John Daub: Awesome. Yeah. It really inspired me. I watched with my mom all the videos.

05:41:00 John Daub: There's a lot of videos. You watched all of them?

05:44:00 Student: All of them.

05:44:00 John Daub: Whoa. Which one was your favorite then? Just give him a test.

05:49:00 Student: Osaka one. Osaka. With Kevin.

05:52:00 John Daub: With Kevin. Oh, the Dotonbori street food one.

05:55:00 Student: Yeah, Dotonbori.

05:55:00 John Daub: That was a lot of fun. I liked that one. Really my favorite. Awesome. And so you went down to Osaka?

06:00:00 Student: No, no, no. I didn't go.

06:03:00 John Daub: Wow, you saw the other city. So you gotta go make the trip down to Osaka. What do you like about Japan? What's really fun for you?

06:10:00 Student: Japan is, people are very polite. Yeah, and the streets are also very clean. It's very good. And the rules are also very good. Especially the train is very good.

06:22:00 John Daub: The trains are much, much better. Much better. If we compare it to Mumbai.

06:30:00 John Daub: Last time I was in Mumbai, I couldn't even get onto the train, so. But it's nice to see you in Japan.

06:38:00 Student: Yeah, nice to see you too. Thank you. Who do we have down here? Hello.

06:42:00 John Daub: What's your name?

06:43:00 Araceli: Araceli.

06:43:00 John Daub: And what do you like about Japan?

06:45:00 Araceli: I like the Tokyo DisneySea.

06:47:00 John Daub: Tokyo DisneySea! Oh, so we don't, where are you from?

06:52:00 Araceli: Pasadena.

06:52:00 John Daub: So you have Disneyland there in California, but no DisneySea. It's kinda cool, huh? Do you like the food?

07:02:00 Araceli: Yeah. I like all kinds of food.

07:06:00 John Daub: What's your favorite food?

07:07:00 Araceli: I don't want to go, but this is so big, so we didn't have time. My favorite food is macaroni and cheese.

07:11:00 John Daub: Macaroni and cheese. We don't have that here. Do you like sushi?

07:16:00 Araceli: Oh, great.

07:17:00 Araceli: It's okay.

07:21:00 John Daub: Well, thank you. That's a cute watch. A smart watch? I don't have one of those. Hi, tech. Thank you. Good job. And there's mom right there. Hello.

07:41:00 John Daub: All right. Hey. Yeah, all right. So what's your name and where you from?

07:41:00 Ned: My name is Ned and I'm from Australia.

07:46:00 Ned: We've been watching John's videos for a while now and they've really helped us here, especially the one from Narita Airport.

07:53:00 Ned: The train station an unplanned livestream.

07:57:00 John Daub: Yeah, that was the most helpful video because I knew exactly where to go where to buy the Suica card (IC transport card). Yeah, everything. Oh cool. Yeah, it was really really helpful when I make those.

08:10:00 Ned: I watched it twice. Yeah, really solidified. I knew where I was going. As soon as I got on those escalators.

08:16:00 John Daub: I was like, I know where this is. I know and you can take the carts on the escalator too in Narita. That's pretty cool too. Yeah, it was really really helpful. So you've been here for how long already?

08:22:00 Ned: Less than 24 hours.

08:27:00 John Daub: Less than 24 hours? That's why that episode is the most useful you've seen more of the airport than anywhere else I think so far. Sorry that the park is closed today, but definitely have to make it back.

08:39:00 Ned: Well, what's the top thing you're looking forward to seeing on your trip? Gosh, there's so many things.

08:44:00 Ned: Today we were gonna go to Sunshine City. Okay, but then we saw that you were here so well.

08:49:00 John Daub: You can go after this. Yeah, exactly. We're gonna go up there after this because she wants to go to the Pokemon Center there. Yeah, there's gosh so many things.

08:59:00 Ned: Yes, we are stuck in Kyoto yeah, Kansai's nice trying the economy.

09:08:00 John Daub: Don't burn your mouth don't burn your mouth. That's great, thanks for coming to the meetup. Wow.

09:21:00 John Daub: Come over here for a second in Japan. When people handshake they don't really handshake but in the in the West in the US and I guess in Australia. We really like to give it to people. I don't know if you've ever seen the US president when he shakes hands. He really lays it on strong. So I wasn't expecting that but it was a good handshake. I'm awake. That was better than a shot of coffee.

09:45:00 Sarah: Hi, my name is Sarah. I'm from Oahu, but I have just been living in Kobe for the past six weeks.

09:50:00 John Daub: Oh wow.

09:51:00 Sarah: In Uguisudani [?]. So I'm just gonna come up here for Tokyo for the past couple days.

09:55:00 Sarah: So honestly you posting that you're gonna be here is like whoa.

09:58:00 John Daub: This is a really big coincidence last second. Yeah. Yeah, thanks for coming. Yeah.

10:04:00 Sarah: If I had a place to recommend though, have you ever seen the show Kansaro on Netflix? Yeah. Have you seen. Remember that kakigori (shaved ice) shop episode?

10:15:00 John Daub: Kore PC pop [?]. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah, that's down there. That's in Musashino. Okay. Yeah, it's incredibly delicious. It's a really really good.

10:23:00 Sarah: You're just saying the kakigori because that's that it's so hot right now.

10:28:00 John Daub: It's not that hot. Are you kidding me? I like everyone's melting and people are gravitating back underneath the tree. Look. Tractor beam the shade is like a tractor beam. In Kobe the typhoon is it or like it went past. How is Kobe down there everything? Okay, I had an overheating. Hey, we're back. I had an overheating problem with the phone. So while I've been doing that we've been taking photos.

10:50:00 John Daub: Here let's take another photo here. Okay. All right. Thank you very much. That one's on the video, too.

11:01:00 John Daub: Wait, so your photos out here. Oh. You fish.

11:08:00 John Daub: Can go and then there are fish just kind of thrown onto the board. Wow that one I love I fish this is the season to summer season.

11:19:00 John Daub: So I was talking with my man down here and recommended which museum?

11:24:00 Guest: The railway museum.

11:24:00 John Daub: In Saitama, why do you like that museum?

11:32:00 Guest: Um, we have miniature trains, which I actually got one from the gacha (capsule toy machine).

11:38:00 John Daub: And you told me about the ding ding.

11:39:00 Guest: Yeah, it was actually just went up and it goes down.

11:44:00 John Daub: That's the gates that go ding ding ding ding ding ding ding ding ding and they had one inside right? Yeah. Wow. A real Shinkansen (bullet train).

11:49:00 Guest: A real one?

11:52:00 Guest: Two ones inside.

11:55:00 John Daub: Two? Wow. Did you have a ticket?

11:59:00 Guest: We had a car.

12:03:00 John Daub: Well, thanks for sharing that that the train museum in Saitama is highly recommended and your name sir.

12:10:00 Theo: Theo.

12:12:00 John Daub: And he's going to go sit on a toilet toilet next. Are you just gonna look at him? You're not gonna sit on him?

12:19:00 Theo: No.

12:20:00 John Daub: I sit on them. I made a whole video sitting on them. Hahaha. I'm just gonna look at them.

12:58:00 John Daub: It's sort of really cool. Here's his parents. Yeah visiting from New Zealand, but Australia, but New Zealand. Hey everybody.

13:12:00 John Daub: Bring your own diapers. That's really good or you can get them at Costco at the wholesale market. That's what I'm gonna do if I ever have kids which could be soon. That's a different story.

13:25:00 Guest: Other sizes and everything different. Large and there's nothing bigger at the pharmacies. Wow, so New Zealand, what is she what size is she?

13:39:00 Guest: Toddler and then a large here in Japan t-shirt size in Japan in the US. I'm a medium in Japan. I'm an extra-large.

13:47:00 John Daub: Makes you feel big in Japan. That's sort of a key phrase big in Japan. It's like. My dad is an XL size in Japan in Japan. He's XXXL.

14:00:00 John Daub: Uniqlo's Ginza shop. That's it and they have big and tall shops in Bakurocho [?], Yokoyama in the city. It's another story. We're just sumo wrestler shop. I found that shop, too. It starts from XXXL actually by 5XL so I might do an episode on that on that place. So thanks for thanks for visiting. It's really cool. Anybody else want to do shout out?

14:22:00 Guest: Shout out last chance shout out.

14:25:00 Guest: My dog Charlie.

14:27:00 John Daub: Charlie. Over here shout out to Charlie. Yeah, so this is everybody. Carl to Carl and Frank Carl and Frank you've been shouted out.

14:52:00 John Daub: Wonderful so thanks everybody for coming here doing the meetup. If you come into Tokyo and you want to you want to hang out with me, that's cool. I'm gonna try to I'm gonna try to make some time with you and do meet ups like this because it's really hard to meet everyone individually, but if we can meet everybody like this, it's actually kind of more fun because I'm not that exciting of a person. I'm just saying I'm just saying I'm actually like how I am normally this is what I'm like, right? I don't know. It's like I'm a high tension individual yeah, it's so hot Peters back there Peters Peter does I do things in groups Peter does things individually see.
