What's Inside "inside" Japan
What's Inside "inside" Japan
Overview
In this special collaboration episode, John Daub meets up with Dan and Lincoln from the popular YouTube channel What's Inside at the Hilton Tokyo Bay in Maihama, Chiba. The duo is in Japan on a whirlwind 24-hour mission from Hawaii to film a secret project for their own channel, which involves cutting open a Japanese item. John interviews them about their channel's origin, their experiences in Japan, and answers viewer questions submitted during a live stream.
The conversation covers practical travel advice, including the intense humidity of a Japanese summer, etiquette for filming on the street, and the benefits of staying in Airbnb accommodations versus hotels to experience local culture. They also discuss favorite vending machines, food comparisons between Japan and the US, and potential future travel destinations within Japan like Okinawa and the Ushiku Daibutsu.
This video serves as both a behind-the-scenes look at a YouTube collaboration and a travel guide filled with John's signature insights on navigating Japan as a foreigner. It highlights the friendship between creators and offers valuable tips for viewers planning their own trips.

Japan Travel Tips
- Summer Heat: Tokyo in summer is extremely humid. Even if the temperature reads lower than dry heat locations, the humidity makes it feel much hotter and drains energy.
- Filming Etiquette: It is legal to film on the street, but you should respect privacy. Avoid filming people's faces directly. Japanese media often blurs or mosaics faces of bystanders.
- Accommodation: Consider using Airbnb to stay in residential neighborhoods for a more authentic cultural experience compared to tourist-heavy hotels.
- Vending Machines: Try the Freal milkshake machines found in hotels and some public spaces. They mix frozen ice cream cups into fresh milkshakes.
- Day Trips: Tokyo is great, but consider day trips to places like Ushiku Daibutsu (giant Buddha) or regions like Kansai/Kyoto for a different experience.
- Meetups: John often hosts meetups in popular areas like Asakusa (Kaminarimon); check his social media for events.
Japanese Language & Culture Notes
- Maihama (舞浜): The area in Chiba Prefecture where Tokyo Disney Resort is located. Often referred to colloquially as "Disney Island" by visitors.
- Filming Privacy: In Japan, there is a strong cultural emphasis on privacy. While not strictly illegal to film in public, broadcasting someone's face without permission can lead to issues.
- Okinawa Culture: Mentioned as a place of longevity and happiness. Traditional burial practices involve cremation and placing ashes in family pillars.
- Daibutsu (大仏): Refers to giant Buddha statues. The Ushiku Daibutsu is one of the largest in the world.
- Kansai (関西): The western region of Japan including Kyoto and Osaka, often recommended for first-time visitors seeking traditional culture.
Food & Drink Guide
- McDonald's: Dan notes that McDonald's in Japan uses better ingredients and feels healthier than in America.
- Ice Cream: A favorite treat for the guests. Haagen-Dazs vending machines are highlighted.
- Freal Milkshake: 00:10:11 A vending machine that mixes frozen ice cream cups into milkshakes. Available in hotels and some locations in Utah.
- Banana: John mentions buying a banana from a vending machine in Shibuya in a previous video.
- Peanut Butter Sandwiches: Lincoln mentions these as a staple food inside him (humorous).
People
- John Daub: Host of Only in Japan Go. American living in Japan for 30+ years. Facilitates the conversation and provides local context.
- Dan (What's Inside): Co-host of the What's Inside channel. Father of Lincoln. Enjoys Japan but tends to eat McDonald's. Interested in Okinawa.
- Lincoln (What's Inside): Co-host of the What's Inside channel. Son of Dan. Started the channel with a science project. Afraid of bees/wasps.
Key Takeaways
- Japan's summer humidity is significantly more taxing than dry heat at higher temperatures.
- The What's Inside channel grew from a simple science project to millions of subscribers by satisfying curiosity.
- Staying in residential areas (Airbnb) offers a more authentic experience than tourist hotels.
- Filming in public requires sensitivity to privacy norms regarding faces.
- There are unique vending machines in Japan beyond standard drinks, such as milkshake mixers and fresh fruit.

00:00:01 John Daub: Greetings everybody! I happen to be right now on Disney Island joined by these two characters from What's Inside. We cut things open and destroy things. And we're in Japan, one of our favorite places, with our favorite YouTube creator in all of Japan. The friendliest guy, John. I try. But they're actually here in Japan on a mission and it's top secret. We can't... well, technically you're holding it in your hands right now. But we can't talk about that. No, no, but yeah, we're gonna make a video coming out in the next couple of days that you guys will like if you like Japanese things.
00:00:35 Dan (What's Inside): We did a few things while we were here over the last couple of days and now we're just sweating because it's so hot and humid here in Japan. It wasn't like this when we came here three months ago.
00:00:45 John Daub: Is this actually called Disney Island? I don't know. I think this is called Maihama. Maihama is the name of the station. But this island was built by Oriental Land Company in like the 1950s after World War II and they... I'm not sure the history. I don't want to go too much into it. But they have lots of hotels surrounding DisneySea and Disneyland. DisneySea is the only one here. And these guys are staying right there, which is the Tokyo Hilton. Yeah, it was pretty cheap. It's not the nicest hotel. We wanted to stay in the capsule hotel, but Lincoln really wanted a good night's sleep and didn't know how that would go.
00:01:23 Lincoln (What's Inside): So now we're gonna go to the airport in a couple of hours, but we just filmed... how many videos have we filmed for our channel with you?
00:01:29 John Daub: Oh, it's like the third or fourth one. Is this third or fourth video? Have you guys seen any of the videos that we've done together? I'm trying to look for some comments here to see if anybody says anything. But yeah, we did chachapon. The first one was awesome. Kitty Cat Bank, sort of. I wasn't there for it. And last time we were here, Al Cafe and... Yeah, Al Cafe. And he helped us with the Squishy video to tell us where to go, but you weren't with us that day when we filmed it. Oh, the Squishy video, yeah. The Captain Bauer one was fun. Yeah. That was a pretty giant rat thing. It's another story.
00:02:03 John Daub: But basically, I want to ask Dan and Lincoln several things about Japan because this is not their first trip to Japan. You've been here several times before, right?
00:02:13 Dan (What's Inside): Yeah. I love it here.
00:02:14 John Daub: And he loves it here, although he tends to eat McDonald's a lot, but that's okay. We're gonna work on that.
00:02:20 Dan (What's Inside): The McDonald's is better and healthier than in America. It is. They use better ingredients here than they do in America, so I don't feel as bad.
00:02:28 John Daub: We're gonna work on that. But as Dan said, it's like really hot here, and they come from...
00:02:34 Dan (What's Inside): We're living in St. George, Utah, which is southern Utah. It's like 110 degrees right now. But here, it's probably what, 94? But it's so humid that you just drip with sweat, where in Utah, you don't get that humidity. Yeah, it's 105 right now there. But it's not even close to as warm. There really is something to that whole "it's a dry heat" type thing.
00:02:56 John Daub: I'm telling you guys, and if the Olympic Committee is watching one more time, it's really, really hot in Tokyo and Japan in general in the summer because of the humidity. I don't think you get it. I mean, I think I have people in the Sahara going, "No, but we've got it." Why do they speak in English accents in the Sahara? We've got 120 degrees Fahrenheit, and it doesn't matter. It's about like this heat that sucks the energy out of you little by little, drop by drop. Like, it's 85 degrees here right now, and feels like it's a lot hotter. See what I'm saying? A lot.
00:03:34 John Daub: All right. So once again, we were here in actually yesterday we were in Shinjuku, and today we are here at the Hilton in front of the hotel now on a secret mission, which we've just completed. And that episode will be on the What's Inside Channel Friday or Saturday-ish U.S. It's going to be a special episode. We always love coming out here.
00:03:54 Lincoln (What's Inside): Literally, we were in Hawaii 24 hours ago. 24 hours ago, we were on a vacation in Hawaii for a week, and John sent an email and said, hey, you need to come out here right now. I've got something for you. And now here we are. We're about to leave already.
00:04:06 John Daub: I didn't think they'd actually come. I mean, they came like on a day trip to Japan. Who does that?
00:04:12 Dan (What's Inside): We do. We're crazy.
00:04:15 John Daub: But it's great. I love Japan. So what are some questions that we have in there? Like, what questions do you guys have for us about Japan and our thoughts from an American side of things? Yeah. If you guys have any questions for the next couple of minutes, I'll take some questions from you. What do you have questions for somebody that's visiting Japan? Do you have any questions for What's Inside?
00:04:36 Lincoln (What's Inside): So what's their channel?
00:04:37 John Daub: That's a good question. They cut things open. What's Inside started with Lincoln's second-grade science project. He wanted to know what's inside of sports balls. So he cut open a few sports balls, threw the videos on the Internet, so that he could tell his class at the end of his science project. Go to my YouTube channel, and you can see how my dad cut them open. What's Inside. And then about a year later, people started watching it. And we were like, why are people watching this? And they kept saying, cut more things open. So we started cutting more things open. And then within a year from that moment, we decided, let's just start cutting things open. We gained a million subscribers, and now here we are in Japan on a moment's notice. It's been a blast. They have, I think, something like five, six million, seven million subscribers.
00:05:15 Dan (What's Inside): Just about to six million subscribers.
00:05:16 John Daub: Almost six million subscribers on their channel. Their idea, if you haven't seen their channel, definitely go over there. They cut stuff open, and the channel's called What's Inside. It's genius. And when I watch it, I'm just curious like everybody else, like what's inside this stuff? So the biggest one you did was the rattlesnake video and a World Cup soccer ball. It's like some interesting stuff. It's a Minecraft one, Diamond Ore once. Oh, wow. That one did really well. Hornet's Nest. Wasp Nest was scary.
00:05:41 Lincoln (What's Inside): Wait, were there wasps in there? No, they were all dead, but still, it was really freaky because I cannot stand bees. That's my fear.
00:05:48 John Daub: Dan, didn't you do, you did one What's Inside My Son once too, right?
00:05:52 Dan (What's Inside): I did.
00:05:53 John Daub: Oh, my God. I remember all the people going, why don't you cut up Lincoln? And they were joking, and then Dan actually did it. April Fool's joke. It was a joke.
00:06:00 John Daub: So we're going inside the Hilton here. This is it. They were actually here just for 24 hours. It's pretty crazy to come here and complete the mission, which was completed, right? We're done with the mission. All right. We're inside. Now we can ask some, actually answer some questions here. Yes, we did cut open the gold play button. We did cut open the gold play button. That was a great one. What's inside a pop figure? That's a good question. Oh, that's them. We'll give you 60 seconds. We're going to- Show us inside the box, Henry writes. Show us inside the box. I will. Dan is slowly walking away to avoid questions. 24 hour trip, that's nuts.
00:06:42 Dan (What's Inside): It is crazy. But this idea was, it's like something we've been after for a long time to do. Space boat.
00:06:46 John Daub: I don't even know what a space boat is. It's that boat that I was telling you that goes to a dive. Oh, yeah. Okay. What's inside this space boat? I'd love to know. I'd love to cut that open. I'd love to cut open like vending machines and stuff. Yeah. There's lots of ideas. We're not going to give you all of them. Somebody saw the Yeti one. That was crazy. Yes, the Yeti. Yeah, the Yeti cup was pretty cool. Let's walk over to these chairs. I have one now. I bought a Yeti after that because they work. Yeti cup does not work? Yes, the Yeti cooler does not work. Is that the unspellable cup? No. A Yeti cup is like this really expensive cup. It's like $30 for a cup. But you can leave it out in the sun all day long and- Did we- Oh, I put it in my bag, right? The other thing. Yeah, I think so. I put the other thing in my bag.
00:07:27 John Daub: All right, so let's get some questions on here. What do we got? What do we got for this? Yeah, let them roll. Would you guys rather be rich? Oh, I can't read that one. Rich, rather be poor with friends or rich with no friends?
00:07:39 Dan (What's Inside): Of course, poor with friends. Friends and family are way more important than any money in life.
00:07:44 John Daub: What's inside a cricket wicket? What's a wicket? I know the cricket. We did a cricket bat and a cricket ball. Isn't it like the thing where you catch it and throw it? I don't know. I don't know what that one is. Oh, look at this fancy tripod. Watermelon. Yeah, we should do what's inside a watermelon someday. That would be good. What do you do for a Klondike bar? Cut open your phone, John. He's like, okay, could we do that? Could we destroy your phone right now? What? Like the one I'm streaming with? No. No, I don't think so. What is it to film around Japan? Is it rude to film on the street? No, it's okay to film on the street. One of the laws is to try to protect the privacy of people and not film their face. And that's what I'm doing. If you get them a little bit, it's okay. But in Japan, in the media, they mosaic or blur out people's faces. What's inside of Dan?
00:08:28 Dan (What's Inside): Lots of ice cream. Yeah, lots of ice cream.
00:08:33 Lincoln (What's Inside): Both of us. Both of us. That's true.
00:08:35 John Daub: The fire extinguisher ball. That was a really good video that we did. Thank you for that one. Okay, so now tell me what's one of your favorite videos from Only in Japan?
00:08:42 Dan (What's Inside): Oh, gosh. Maybe that we have not seen. Kaleidoscope. That one was fun. We did that in Seattle.
00:08:49 John Daub: What's it? Look, if they cut me open, we won't have any more episodes. We don't want to do that, everybody. I mean, yeah. No, we're going to wait until after the Olympics, okay? Because he's going to have lots of videos. Yeah, wait until after the Olympics, right. The sake episode. Yeah. Sandy, Utah. Sandy, Utah. What? Sandy, Utah? Nads McGee. I was raised in Sandy, Utah. I went to Alta High School. I'm going to my 20-year high school reunion on Saturday in Sandy, Utah. Oh, wow. Yeah. What's inside of Lincoln, seriously?
00:09:16 Lincoln (What's Inside): Also a lot of ice cream. A lot of ice cream and sandwiches. A lot of sandwiches. Peanut butter sandwiches. Yeah. Yeah.
00:09:23 John Daub: The vending machines, that's a really good idea. Yeah. The vending machines here are so good. They're amazing. We actually filmed something two years ago with John. I bought a banana from a vending machine. Plastic arcade. Oh, I took you to the banana vending machine, right? Yeah, I still have that. Yeah, that was really cool. I took you to the banana vending machine in Shibuya. It's sad that you cut that open. The Pac-Man. Water wheel. What's a water wheel? Come to Puerto Rico. We were just there. Yeah, they were in Puerto Rico. Yeah. We were in Puerto Rico. Yeah, Lincoln didn't go there. What's inside the real Salt Lake? I don't know. Real Salt Lake, that's a soccer team. Oh, okay. Yeah. What's your favorite vending machine? That's a good question. Thanks, Jim, for that.
00:10:07 Dan (What's Inside): Ice cream ones. The Haagen-Dazs? For sure ice cream.
00:10:11 Lincoln (What's Inside): You know what? Oh, no, no, no. Okay. There's this vending machine. It's called Freal. F-R-E-A-L. They had them at our hotel in Maui, but also have them in Utah. It's a milkshake vending machine. And you take the ice cream out of the regular glass container. It's like a frozen... It's totally frozen in a cup. And you put it in this machine and push how thick you want it to be. It raises the cup up, and when it comes back down, it's this beautiful, yummy milkshake. Wow. It's a miracle. It's good. I need to buy one for my house.
00:10:42 John Daub: Awesome. All right, guys. So thanks for these questions. I'm always interested. I got some questions for you guys here. Okay. So you've only seen Tokyo, really, and Narita. Yeah. What's the most interesting thing about Okinawa?
00:10:54 Dan (What's Inside): I want to go see Okinawa, because isn't that the place where people are just the happiest in the world? Where they're able to be soulful. Ah, in Okinawa. They all are buried. They're cremated, and then they put them in the same little pillar together, because they all just want to be as family. I feel like there's something special about Okinawa that I need to see. Yeah.
00:11:10 John Daub: I haven't done that on the series. I think that would be a great place to go. Lincoln, how about you?
00:11:15 Lincoln (What's Inside): It would be fun to see where the square watermelons are, but we could just watch your video. That's right. Lincoln is so kind. Look at the plaza. Look at the plug there. That was nice, man. You got some heads on that.
00:11:27 John Daub: And then there's also a giant Buddha. It's like the third biggest Buddha statue in the entire world. Ah, the Ushiku Daibutsu, yeah. And it's not too far out of here. It could be a day trip out of Tokyo, so I want to do that also. That's so fun. There's so many things, so we need to come back for a longer time. We came here for a week for spring break, but that wasn't long enough. Yeah. I think the Ushiku Daibutsu, there's so many things in Japan. If you just stay in Tokyo, and a lot of people ask me what's a good itinerary, Tokyo's really good. And there's day trips around here, but if you ask me personally, Kansai and Kyoto and going down there is even better for your first time, and then make Tokyo maybe a day trip, because it's so crowded right now, which is, I don't know, you guys, why didn't you stay in the city?
00:12:08 Dan (What's Inside): I mean, it's more expensive out there, and I don't know, there's something about this island, it's easy to get to, this little Disney island, and they have really good restaurants. Yeah.
00:12:17 John Daub: I made a video about the Sheraton Hotel and the stay that I had there on another one, the live stream, definitely check that out. I think if you have a family, this is kind of like the perfect place to stay. When my family visited Japan, there's just so many options and activities that you can do, and they're not even Disney. There's a pool nearby that you went to last time. Yeah, so just not too far from here, right in front of the Disney entrance, there's a community park. So when we were here as a family, I would take my daughters there every day, and even though we didn't speak the language, they helped us get in. They make you go through this car wash shower thing before you can get to the pool, it sprays you, and then the pools are great. They have music, really weird music, and saunas, hot rooms, it's super cheap too. So that's one of my favorite things to do.
00:12:59 John Daub: If you're going to come to Japan or basically any country, try to go somewhere, get an Airbnb, or go somewhere where you feel like you're in the native culture, I guess is what I'm going to say. Try to go to some of the normal restaurants, try to go and see places where people go. Tourists don't go to the swimming pool that we go to. Oh, yeah. But that's what made it great. Yeah. And so I know right now we're staying at the Hilton and we eat McDonald's a lot, but on a lot of our trips, we do try to make it authentic and real and see cool things. Yeah. Yeah, I think that's really good advice. The good thing about Airbnb, the great thing about it is that it puts you straight in the middle of a Japanese community, and you get to see things that you wouldn't see. If you stayed in hotels, it's sort of the touristy thing to do. Airbnb is really good. Even though new laws have changed it where it's getting rarer to find good rooms on Airbnb, it still is really good. And the last time you stayed here was in an Airbnb. It was great. Yeah. We had a great trip when we came. I think we vlogged a bit of it. We did one side of a squishy, one side of something else, but we filmed on top of the roof, and it was incredible, and it was cheaper than a hotel. You had a roof. That's just too... You could have a place where you could go and hang out on the roof with hammocks and stuff. Yeah. Really cool.
00:14:05 John Daub: Well, thanks guys for taking some time out for us. Welcome back to Japan, even though it's for 24 hours. Not enough time. You got to be back.
00:14:11 Dan (What's Inside): We'll be back. We will be back. Yes, for sure. Yeah.
00:14:16 John Daub: All right. So everybody, I will be doing a meetup tonight in Asakusa. Yeah. I'm in Tokyo right now. Join us at around 8 PM, 7:30 PM in front of Kaminarimon and the Big Lantern. I put an event page on the Facebook page, so I'm looking forward to seeing you there. See you everybody. The last 20 seconds will be of the entrance of the Hilton in Tokyo. Pretty nice. Bye everybody. You know who that is in the middle. Not going to pass up the opportunity.
