I am a YouTuber from Japan

Overview

In this special live stream episode, John Daub travels outside of Japan to Seoul, South Korea, to attend the 2018 YouTube Creator Summit for the Asia-Pacific region. Filming from his hotel room shortly after arrival, John shares his excitement and slight overwhelm at being recognized as a official creator. He unboxes the welcome gift package provided by YouTube, revealing branded merchandise, snacks, and a self-guided map of the Hongdae neighborhood.

02 John Daub: Hey everybody. I'm here in Seoul, Korea for a YouTube summit. This is a creator summit where a lot of creators from the Asia-Pacific region come here to meet in one spot and we can talk about a lot of things. But more importantly to me is that I get to meet a lot of other creators. It's been a pretty cool experience. I want to tell you about it while it's still fresh in my mind because I just got here like 15 minutes ago.

31 John Daub: Salutations to Jim and Nessie Florencia and Mindless Marty and a bunch of other people that I see quite often in here. Thank you for joining me. It's nice to be with you guys.

47 John Daub: I'm just kind of freaked out by it. I don't really take this channel too seriously in terms of me. I've always tried to be a navigator or use the Only in Japan main channel as something to introduce you to something in Japan, not about my life. But when I came in here, this is the room. I walked in—hey Bloody Bricks. First I saw the mirror. There I am. And in the mirror you can see there's a mystery box on the bed. I don't know what's inside, but we're going to get a chance to unbox that.

30 John Daub: Of course you see the YouTube stuff, YouTube Creator Summit in Seoul, Korea right now. On the table there in the front, there's my suitcase on the bottom left. And it was just kind of like, what? What is this? That's when I realized, yeah, I'm a YouTuber. What is that?

01 John Daub: Thankfully it's a picture from a couple years ago, so I look a little bit better. I literally just flew back to Tokyo from Singapore and then this morning first thing I flew here to Korea and I'm really wiped out. I might put these robes on just to lounge around. Today a lot of creators are going to be coming. Two of my friends are coming to Korea for this meeting—I won't tell you their names. You might even know them. I think they're the only two people that I know. There's maybe one other creator that I know. Everybody else is from different countries around Asia, which is going to be so cool.

31 John Daub: This hotel is top notch. YouTube has been slightly over the top. But when I saw the slippers on the bed, the first thing that came to my mind is that they really value the creators. They really want you to know that you're special. It's just a lot for me. Even the badge that I have today—it's pretty cool. I love these little touches. It's made of hardcore plastic. They got my name right. That makes me a YouTuber from Japan.

35 John Daub: I want to open this up with you guys because without you, I wouldn't be here. If people didn't subscribe to the channel, it wouldn't make a difference. I'm going to take off and put the wide lens here so you guys can get a wide view. We're going to see what's in the box.

10 John Daub: Hey there. Welcome to the YouTube Summit in Seoul, Korea. We are so thrilled to have you join us for the next few days. This is just for you. Kick back, relax, and enjoy your stay. This is awesome. The schedule is pretty loaded with stuff to do. But I'm going to unbox this together. It looks like a shoe box. I could use a pair of shoes. I came with Birkenstock sandals. I'm the most informal person in this entire country. Everyone looks great in Korea. They do in Japan too.

40 John Daub: Alright, let's see what's in here. Whoa! That looks pretty big. Fanny pack. My other fanny pack over there is going to be a little jealous. This one looks pretty cool. It's got YouTube written on it. Play button. That's very cool. A YouTube recording. Creators Summit 2018 Self-Guided Map of Hongdae. And this is the area that we're in right now. Look at that. It's a pretty amazing view.

37 John Daub: So I'm gonna be walking around the streets until my friends come. They know this area so much better than me. I'm so thankful that they're coming and they're gonna show me their old neighborhood. This place is really stylish, Seoul, Korea. I'm so impressed with this country. I haven't been to Seoul for like 18 years. It's been a really long time so I'm really looking forward to going out there and exploring. I'm hungry, so I'm gonna eat a lot while I'm here and I'm trying to lose weight and it's not working.

13 John Daub: JinFeier seems to know who's coming. There's a list here of all the creators and I've taken this and joined the journey here. I found our name here. When I say our, it's like us, right? Because this channel right there. Boom. So we're represented here on this big play button. And that's so cool. We're one of many creators that are coming here. You guys have put me on the map. And I'm here for you.

47 John Daub: What I'm going to be doing here over the next few days is bringing you with me, if I can, as much as possible. Because I create for viewers. I don't create for me. This is the most important thing. I think a lot of these creators probably know this too. We create for you out there. And I'm going to try to do whatever I can to learn as much as I can to create stuff for you.

12 John Daub: Oh, my gosh. This is heavy. Urban yuck? I don't know what this is. Glutinous rice. Oh man. It's YouTube approved? Wow. There's loads of them. This is going to keep me energized for like ever. This is just pure weight. This is like a brick. Bloody Bricks. This is so heavy. I didn't expect that. I'll have to take some back for Kanae, too.

05 John Daub: What's in this tube? What should be like a little rifle with Nerf darts that I can shoot myself with? The mystery continues. There's nothing in here. I guess we have to fill this with our love or something. It's pretty bizarre. The poster—oh right, Tim's got that right. Tim's a lot smarter than me. It's to put their selfie picture in. But what am I going to do with this? That's something Peter von Gomm would do. My friend Peter von Gomm would do that. You'd open the door and you'd see him. That's so Peter.

08 John Daub: I like these robes too. This is an incredible hotel. Live the robe life at home. This is true. I will be living a robe life in here. This is a pretty cool radio. That's a pretty cool clock. Everything is a lot cooler when you're in a hotel. Look at this Bluetooth boombox speaker thing. And guys, look at the bathroom. This is like clean. This toilet's kind of shy. I'm glad that Kanae wasn't here because she'd be peeking around the corner. Look at this vanity. It even illuminates. Small flush, big flush. That's pretty cool. So it's a little bit different than Japan, but it's still pretty cool. I got like this really thin LG OLED TV. I've never had an OLED TV. We're styling in Korea and I'm here representing you guys.

46 John Daub: We've got 468 people watching. I want you in the comments below. Leave me some questions that would be good to ask other creators, to ask YouTube staff. Is there something that you really want to know about YouTube? Something that I think I could ask them for you so that we can make this channel and make our experience not just as a creator but as a viewer better? Because I want to hear from you guys.

19 John Daub: Hey, the wife and I are big fans of you. Kanae's got me. We're fans. Yeah, you know, fix the app. Kanae, when we were at Singapore a couple days ago in Sentosa and all of the viewers came and knew her name, that's when it just sunk into her that this is really big. It's a big deal. And that's why when I make the videos, I really have to put a lot of effort. She kind of understands that maybe I'm going to spend nights a little bit longer than her. I might wake up a little earlier. I might look like a punching bag for working hard. But it's worth it because when you saw all the fans, all the viewers, all of the supporters in one room like that, and they knew her name and they knew about her, that it's pretty neat. And that's a reason to work hard. So we work hard for you.

25 John Daub: It's pretty weird to see. I know that you guys appreciate what I do, but it's neat to see. It actually feels good that YouTube cares as well. And they do. They even gave me a king-size bed. That's just for one. I'm going to sleep right in the middle, naname (diagonally). In Tokyo, we don't have this kind of space. This is just insane. I'm so stoked for this. Leave me comments below. Tell me what you think we can do better with YouTube, what I can do better. I'm going to try to come out of this with more ideas, more powerful, more psyched up. Maybe there's a chance to do collaborations with other YouTubers that you guys like from around Asia. It's not just Japan that's going to be here. Yuka Kinoshita is going to be here apparently. She eats a lot. There's a lot of really cool people that are going to be here. I'm just really happy to be here representing you guys.

48 John Daub: From now, I'm going to probably pull up a chair. Probably from now on, I'm going to just take a nap and I might get something to eat. It's so freaky, isn't it? This is not normal. You don't see this every day.

13 John Daub: Jason Woodley writes, you buddy are awesome and you deserve your success. Jason, I don't know how much success I deserve. All I can do is keep making the best videos I can make the best show. You just keep making the best show that you can make. You work the hardest that you can work. You enjoy what you do as much as you can. And whatever comes from that is just lucky.

37 John Daub: Jan writes, a Bloody Bricks poster giveaway in the nearby future. This might make a good postcard though. We'll do something with this, Mr. Bricks. And do a collaboration with EricSurf6. I was actually in touch with Eric today. Awesome guy. I've never met him, but everybody who's met him just says he's such a nice guy. I'm really looking forward to sitting down and talking with Eric. Collaborations can't just be because you got YouTube viewers and I got YouTube viewers. It has to be something that has value to you. This is the greatest thing as a video content producer that I've known since I started this. Back in 2003, I've been making videos, tourist videos about Japan.

05 John Daub: I want to inspire people to watch videos. And I want to inspire people to make videos for YouTube. What's great about YouTube is that it's going to help people. Only in Japan's main channel. And even with this, with the live streams in my mind, I'm trying to tell you a story one way or another. It doesn't always go right, but it's always live. Right now, this is live, so I'm not reading from a script or anything. I'm just kind of just doing it.

41 John Daub: UFO Bob says it's clear you worked hard. On Brazilian shows, it's much appreciated. Thank you, UFO Bob. Pissing horror stories from Japan. Christian, I have a horror story I want to introduce to you, but my wife said that I can't do it. She's really scared about this story. A lot of people in Japan are kind of worried about this story too because it's a deep history and it scares a lot of people. But I'm going to see if I can do it in a respectful way. I found it because I was looking on Google Maps. Google Maps comes up with markers. You're finding amazing things to cover in Japan. Kanae's father knows a lot about it. I'm going to ask him about it before I do a stream on it because I think it'd be pretty cool to learn about the history of it through horror—like history through horror.

46 John Daub: Yeah, you know, I've met Chris a couple of times from Abandoned Japan. He's a really nice guy. Collaborating with other YouTubers. The thing with the sponsorship, Bloody Bricks, is that I do have a sponsor for the videos. It's you guys. The biggest sponsor right now of my content is Patreon. Patreon pays for the trip I'm going to make next month. It pays for a lot of the stuff that I'm doing. All of it is being used to go back into the show.

34 John Daub: Ellis writes, congrats, John. So awesome that you're celebrated today. Remember our dinner chat? The sky's the limit. P.S. Dave says hi. Guys, your gacha pony's on the way. Ellis, I got your poem when we did the gacha pony episode. That's on the way. In fact, it should be there this week. It's kind of weird that I'm talking live to Ellis through a video. So thank you, Ellis. I appreciate that.

25 John Daub: I want to thank Nosh and Jim both for moderating. Especially Nosh, who has a new pillow. I'll let him explain on his own. It was really cool to meet Nosh last week and two weeks ago. Congratulations to Jim. He's doing his new job. And Kevin's Patreon is gaining momentum as well. Gordon writes in, so is Peter's and Jennifer's. It's really been an amazing experience for me to see my friends get better with their YouTube channels. When you make a channel and it has some success, you want to kind of spread it out and bring as many people up with you. You focus on your shows, but you want to focus on bringing your friends up and the people around me up.

19 John Daub: One day, folks, I'm going to fall. I'm old enough to know that maybe one day I might make it kind of near the top. Then one day this could all just end. But if you help the people around you grow, the fall to the bottom is not going to be as hard. When that happens, if I can say that we have a strong community and I've helped other people, then my fall to the bottom might bounce a little bit. You have to use it to do some good. And that's what I hope I'm going to be able to do with this Go channel and with the main channel and with all the content that I do to try to do good for Japan, try to do good for my community, try to do good for all the viewers, the supporters and for people. Even for YouTube. When I make the content, I want it to be something useful for the platform on the whole. Something positive that makes people feel good and inspired about Japan and about watching on YouTube.

46 John Daub: I know there's a lot of negative stuff in the world. And it's nice to see something like at the end of "I can live to 106 years old," like the old lady one. Why do Japanese live so long? I thought it was a pretty inspiring story to end with a message that this lady is still working. Like these kind of stories. The man with the blowtorch. He's still working and he's in his late 60s and he's got a really successful business. I like these stories that inspire people. And that's what I'm going to try to aim for in the future, to keep bringing you this kind of stuff.

19 John Daub: I want to thank you all. I will do some live streams. Apparently I have a Wi-Fi router or something. So I'm going to take you around Korea. I know it's Only in Japan, but this week, the next couple of days, it might be Only in Japan and Korea because we have viewers now that I know. Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, New York. I've done meetups. I'm going to do a meetup in India. I'm going to meet up in Europe. We have views all over the world. There's a global show. So Only in Japan and Korea. Let's do it.

50 John Daub: I'm going to report back to you because once again, just so we come full circle, these live streams are for you guys. Live streams from Korea if we could. It's going to be pretty cool. Bloody Bricks from Michigan, shout out to you guys. The football season is about to start. I don't know if we're going to be able to talk about Ann Arbor, Michigan once the football season starts, buddy, but we'll keep it real and have fun.

20 John Daub: Thanks, everybody, for watching. My battery is going to die. It's been a long trip here to Korea. I'm going to rest up, have some food. Once again, hit the like button and leave a comment below. Tell me what you think we can talk about with YouTube. How can we make the show better? How can we make YouTube better for you, your viewer experience? From all of this, I think the show is going to get better. I'm going to do meetups everywhere. I promise. Because of the Patreon and because of the money that's coming in through there, I can travel more. And I use that to come and meet you guys. So I want to say goodbye and thank you. They welcomed me in the room as I entered and to start the YouTube Creators Summit here in Seoul, Korea. Thank you, everybody. I appreciate it.
