Something happening today

Overview

In this special episode, John Daub orchestrates a surprise 50th birthday party for fellow YouTuber and long-time friend Peter von Gomm (PBG). The video captures the intimate gathering at Peter's Tokyo residence, affectionately referred to as the "PBG Chateau." John presents gifts sent by fans and friends from around the world, including Hawaii, Singapore, Germany, and Korea, highlighting the global community surrounding their channels.

The celebration includes a tour of Peter's custom-designed home, featuring his professional voice-over studio and unique art collection, including paintings by the artist Shag. The atmosphere is casual and family-friendly, with John's daughter Lily and Peter's son Joji playing central roles in the festivities. The episode also touches on the expat experience in Japan, cultural nuances, and the behind-the-scenes reality of content creation.

06:20 John Daub: Live streaming, get your hands out of your pants. Yay! Did you know? Did you know? Why'd you get suspicious? Georgie looks guilty. Wow, welcome! Yay! It's a surprise. Wait, I'm supposed to see her. Oh, really? It's alright. Wow, welcome!

07:22 John Daub: No, no, this is not live streaming. No one's watching this, trust me. It's just the five of us. Times ten. So, we're going to ask him how old he is, and we're going to do a very quick interview with PBG. Hey, buddy. Hey, buddy. It's been a long time. Oh my gosh, Shia!

08:18 Peter von Gomm: That's alright. He's very in tune to the game.

08:20 John Daub: Hey, guys. Were you surprised? You were somewhat surprised.

08:23 Peter von Gomm: Yes, I am very surprised.

08:25 John Daub: You're just suspicious. Yeah, yeah. I try not to guess too much. Happy birthday to me! Speaking of which, one question prevails on the internets. How young are you? Yes, welcome! Siddharth Rao says 400. I know you're like, what? No, he's 30.

08:50 Peter von Gomm: A division of 30.

08:55 John Daub: It's a prime number. Yeah, it's alright. What are these for again? Yeah, very interesting. Very interesting. Some of the things we find just randomly. Very strong. Yeah. I think Ram... Ramselienta has it nailed right there.

09:21 John Daub: Wait a minute! Wait a second! This chair... Hold on a second, dude. It's not that bad! Whatever you were thinking, stop! It's not that bad. Everybody, this is a...

09:36 Peter von Gomm: Yeah, we get it.

09:38 John Daub: So this is actually a very special day for PBG. He is 50 pounds. 50 years young. On this day 50 years ago, his mother, our biggest fan, gave him life. And we're very glad for that effort, that extra push. Thank you.

10:01 John Daub: Peter's fans are all here. Captain Kirk is... Look at the bouquet on there from winning the skating. That's so cute. Peter's fans are here. And yeah, he doesn't look 50. He doesn't act 50. But yeah, we're here with some of his friends. Whoa! Did this just happen? Can you make it to the second floor? You know, if this is a prison break? Just saying.

10:30 John Daub: But it's always pretty cool to have a surprise party even though we didn't have a place to hide. But it's all right. It was fun anyways. And I wanted to share this because Peter is a big part of the show. So it's a special day. Whenever you turn 50, it's a special day. I personally wouldn't know. But I think it's a special day.

10:54 John Daub: We brought a lot of stuff here. Peter doesn't look... He looks early 40s. Wow. Wow. That's what I am. So what we have is a lot of stuff. I brought Luke and Cheryl's presents from Hawaii here, which are macadamia nuts and everything. So thank you, Luke, Cheryl, and Austin. This also includes some Kona coffee and all this. Britta and Heitel's gift from Germany is here. I brought some amazing stuff from Singapore. I also brought some sangria, which actually comes from Kevin via Osaka. And we wanted to celebrate with this here.

11:40 John Daub: This looks like a good one. So this is a bottle of sangria. Yeah. It's premium. It's not bad. It may be better chilled though. It was warm temperature. It's a good year this year.

12:04 John Daub: Well. You know. We joke around here. Oh, wow. Oh, Lily. No, no, no. This is your... So what else did I bring here? So we were in Singapore. And I wanted to share some of this stuff. This is Singapore Laksa potato chips. We actually had two bags. So one we're going to share with PBG. We brought one from Singapore. And one of these cup noodles. This is Tom Yum seafood flavor, which is going to be pretty cool.

12:42 John Daub: Yay. I got this in Korea. Thank you, YouTube. Kettle popcorn. Now we got a party. And these are also from Singapore. Thank you, guys. From the meetup in Singapore. It's nice to be able to share this with everybody here. We have some sushi, some snacks. Going to make this little party. This is next to the kitty litter. So we're going to have some sushi. I brought some chocolate as well. So these are from Singapore. So thank you.

13:18 John Daub: Hey, Joji. Hey, Tom. This is glasses. I love you. Yeah. Eat. Chris, by the way, makes the best hummus. Hummus. Yes. Thank you, Gretchen. He makes the best hummus. So we're going to be eating. We're going to be doing a little bit of cooking here. Look at this. Hummus is hard to find here in Japan, which is why it's good to make it.

13:54 Guest: Where do you get the chickpeas?

13:55 John Daub: It's right here. Oh, wow. Supermarket. Good. Wow. So the internet is loving Peter. So we need to talk with your fans. And by the way, stop sending me stuff to give to him. Just send it to him directly. Send it to me directly, especially the cash. I know. Like I got packages here from you that they sent to me to give to you. And I totally was like, am I going to keep it? Because one of them said booze in it. Actually, if you want to open it. Remember Britta and Heitel from Germany? That's for you from them.

14:38 Peter von Gomm: That's sweet.

14:38 John Daub: That's from Luke and Cheryl and Austin from Hawaii. They said aloha. And a lot of this stuff comes from Singapore, like fish skin. So hopefully you'll enjoy them. It does say on it, dangerously addictive. Okay. Just like me. I don't know how you get more. If you do become addicted to the fish skins, I guess you would have to go to Singapore to get more. But these fish skins were very, very popular in the airport.

15:11 Peter von Gomm: Well, let me just show... Hold on a second. So I was visiting with John's... Thank you, Ellis. Yeah. I was visiting with John's number one fan this past couple weeks. Your mom!

15:22 John Daub: I was sent home with a pack of K-Cup coffee pods for this fruitcake. So who knows... Oh, and these are perfectly sealed. These are airtight. This is awesome. This is San Fran coffee. K-Cups are like impossible to get here in Japan. So this is like... This is awesome. Thank you, Mom. Yeah. They're usually not that big.

15:47 Peter von Gomm: I haven't had a chat with anybody. What? The K-Cups? Oh, yeah. Yeah. I didn't put them in. You used to have some. Thanks, Mom.

15:54 John Daub: All right. Keep it family friendly. Yeah. Yeah. Keep it family friendly. That's right. All right. So this is your 50th birthday. You've been alive for half a century. Any comments?

16:07 Peter von Gomm: That's funny.

16:08 John Daub: To your fans. To your fans. Not to me.

16:11 Peter von Gomm: What's this about 50? About 50% of SmartChance. Are you that old?

16:15 John Daub: Are you really that old? I thought this was your 40th birthday. SmartChance? I'm coming. SmartChance. I'm a division of.

16:22 Peter von Gomm: All right. Mike. All right. Now the truth is out. I am 50.

16:26 John Daub: 50? And yeah, nothing's changed. Actually, you hid that secret pretty well. I didn't know that. You didn't know that. I thought you were like 40. Well, I met you like many years ago. The last birthday that I heard was 46. I thought you were 46. Seriously.

16:43 Peter von Gomm: Yeah. I'm 50. I turned 50. Wow. Yeah. But yeah, no. 46 is four years. All right. So yeah. What's the big deal? Why are you guys? Why are your jaws slacked?

16:53 John Daub: He says you look 49. I don't know. I was. Yeah. He says you look. Damn, you look 49 at most.

16:58 Peter von Gomm: I still look a day over 49. Yeah. Birthdays. You know, when you get over 40, birthdays are not something you really celebrate, I guess. I don't know.

17:05 Peter von Gomm: Hey, I got something to show them.

17:06 John Daub: Oh, you got. What? Should we follow you? What's up? Okay.

17:10 Peter von Gomm: This is from my sister. We had a nice birthday bash in Portland for my birthday. Okay. Let me just put this on. Hang on a second. Wow. You were in Portland for a while. Yeah. We went to Yellowstone Park, too. Oh, wow. Yeah. Yellowstone Park. Land of the Yellowstones.

17:30 John Daub: Is it still erupting like crazy?

17:32 Peter von Gomm: Whoa. What is this? What did you get this medal for?

17:33 John Daub: My sister's friend, this is what she does for a living. She makes all kinds of stuff. What does that say? Oh, whoa. That's not family friendly. But this is. Okay. She makes like handmade things for a living. And this is what my sister commissioned her to make. Oh, wow. So, it's a commissioned piece of art. That's pretty cool. Yeah. Isn't that cool? Yeah. But it has a, it's attached with a magnet to my...

18:00 John Daub: Oh, that's genius.

18:01 Peter von Gomm: So, the other side's another magnet that sticks to the magnet. Therefore, you don't need to puncture this shirt. Right. I just attach it to my nipple rings.

18:08 John Daub: To your what? Oh. Oh. You say that out loud. Family friendly. Family friendly. And then you attach the nipple rings to these rings here and you dangle.

18:17 Peter von Gomm: To my ripple neem. Sorry, I got my birds away. Ah. To my ripple neem. To the ripple neems. To the ripple neems, yes. The rippled stomach of... Yes. So, yeah. Anyhow. Good. So, it's my birthday and I appreciate everybody's love. I've felt it more so. Please don't. I wish I'd turn 50 every year. Yeah. You have a lot of love here.

18:37 John Daub: Turning this over to Peter's live streaming.

18:42 Peter von Gomm: Really? Yeah. I mean... I want to enjoy my... Oh. Yeah. You know, if you want to... Right. I'm on a trip. Just put it on a tripod. I think there's cake.

18:52 John Daub: Okay. All right. So, should I do that as we are... Of course. Operating? In operation? Going smoothly into... Yeah. If you want to. So, it's now 3:20. Yeah. And what time is that in... You're slightly jet lagged, aren't you?

19:15 Peter von Gomm: I am. I am. Portland right now is 16 hours behind. I am. Is mom watching?

19:21 John Daub: No. No. Playback. So, yeah. Yeah. But I'm pretty jet lagged. So, this party, it comes not as just a surprise but a slightly awakening, strange awakening. Yeah. Good. I was just nodding off for an afternoon nap.

19:40 John Daub: You won't remember a thing tomorrow, will you?

19:42 Peter von Gomm: No. No. No. Yeah. Thanks so much.

19:46 John Daub: And now that the vacation is over, stay tuned for some more videos to come. I was actually editing one a little earlier today. So... What do you have in the pipeline?

19:55 Peter von Gomm: Well, we've got quite a few in the pipeline actually. But probably the one that's going to come out next is a hot rod ride that I took with my friend Paul in Portland. Oh, cool. He has a classic car collection. And he took me for a ride and let me drive his '29 Ford Street Rod. Cool. So, yeah. It's fun. So, I'm doing a short video on that and I'll share that with you guys coming soon.

20:23 John Daub: Any stories from the deep? I mean like viewers. What do you mean? Did you get any story submissions?

20:31 Peter von Gomm: Oh, no, no, no. Not yet? No. Yeah. I've been very busy with lots of other content. So, yeah.

20:37 John Daub: So, Peter is from the Oregon, Portland area. You've been living here in Japan for 20 years now.

20:43 Peter von Gomm: 21. Almost. 19. 19 years. And you're a fan of the show. I've been here since my younger...

20:49 John Daub: Even though you're 50, you were here less than me. You're nemesis, not nemesis. Nemesis. Protégé. Protégé. Whatever that means. Is that Rika up there? Who's that sitting up there? Where is Captain Kirk? Chihiro.

21:04 Peter von Gomm: Oh, up there you mean? Yeah. Oh, the doll. Yeah, yeah. That's Rika. That's Rika? Yep. Careful. Wow.

21:13 John Daub: Kanai, is that Rika up there?

21:15 Kanae Daub: Yeah. Rika. Is that Rika? It's Mao. It's the ice skater, Mao.

21:19 John Daub: Oh, Mao. Rika-chan, you're the Mao version. Wow. That's the ice skating Mao, who is a famous Japanese ice skater in the Rika version. Right. So, Rika is like Barbie doll. They do many different versions of the Barbie doll. Yeah. And they call it Rika. Yeah. So, you have Rika-chan, who's a permanent member of Peter's... Inner circle. Inner circle of sanctuary, sanctum. That's right. Wonderful. And you and I met the real Rika in... Yeah. Right? That was classic one. He met the real... That was the real Rika. He loved at first sight, really. He was in love, and I'm just... I know.

21:58 John Daub: Did you want us to open that photo? I guess it was the really thick ankles that really did it, right? And the big head. The big, big head. Big face. It's hard. You can see it from a distance in a crowd. It was so big. When she saw me, when our eyes met, her face never changed. It just... It stayed... Like rubberized? Just like that the whole time, and that was just... That was proof that we were meant for one another. I know. You could sit next to her, and she'll always be pleasant. Yeah. Good news, bad news. You have a video of that on your Instagram, right?

22:24 Peter von Gomm: I do. I do. I think it's like two, three months ago. Yeah. Yeah. It's a haiku number nine. One of the haiku... Yeah, one of the haikus. Number nine. It could be number eight.

22:34 John Daub: Whoa. Feets... Do you have like feats of strength in your house? Georgie, you must complete 12 feats of strength. You must complete 12 feats of strength. One of them is to be considered a man. One of them is... To be considered my true son. Yes. If you are my true son from my seeds, then you must complete 12 feats of manlyhood. One of them is to stretch yourself on these bars from the chair. The second one is to win all video games, including... What's that one? Arms? Arms, yes. Spring Man and all of his cronies. Spring Man.

23:10 John Daub: All right, folks. As we scramble to... Oh, my God. I did like this. We started... As we scramble to put together the party, Peter's napping. Please come in quietly. It worked, Georgie. Should I... Should I... Change? Do you want... Do these people, would they like me to turn on my birthday suit? Air conditioning? Yeah. Oh. My three-piece birthday suit? Oh. Yeah, sure. It's up to you. Do you want me to come in and watch? No. No. No. What is he documentaries now? Oh, I know what you mean. Don't Blame the Georgie. It's Don't Blame the Georgie. The Georgie. The Georgie. Don't Blame the Georg. He's like... He's getting his... He's getting his suit on. Where is George? Oh, there he is. Don't Blame the George. Did you know about this party? George, did you know about it? Did you know? Oh, Lily, is it fun? And what, which phone is that, Georgie? What's that? Wow. Oh, it's Tomomi's? Yeah. Be careful with it.

24:17 John Daub: So we're going to see if we can turn the party over to the PBG channel. Let me grab that phone. Until then, I will stay with you. And when we move it over to the PBG channel, the party will start. I believe it's a birthday. Wow. Do it! Oh. That's when it stops. Don't put the blame on Peter. Nobody's blaming Peter. Nobody's blaming Peter. So we're going to turn this over to the PBG channel because this is the PBG. It is like an amusement park in here, Alan. It very much is. That's what makes it fun. In fact, the second floor, I'm not supposed to show you that, actually. It's off limits to me. But the second floor is actually really nice. And if you had the privilege to be here, to be a part of Peter's inner sanctum, which is a very few select people, and many have been kicked out and have been re-let in several times. But we do have a PBG.

25:19 John Daub: This painting is called Shag. And it's by an artist named Shag. And he has several Shag paintings in his apartment. And they're actually very beautiful. And let me put the wide angle lens down here. I'm showing them your Shag. Wow, look at all the shoes down there. This is a party. It said, love Shag. Mimi 3000 knows about the Shag. It's a... Peter designed this house. He designed this house himself. So it took a long time. I know that. All of this was designed by him. And he gave a thumbs up, a thumbs down, including the rooftop balcony. He's been living here for a while. And it's pretty cool. That's all I really have to say about that.

26:06 John Daub: He does have a studio downstairs. He does have a studio downstairs where he can do his narration work. And that's what he... He's not an actual... I mean, he does YouTube now. But he was... He was originally a narrator or voice artist, we like to say. He's a damn good one. And a lot of these... A lot of the people that are here today are voice artists. If you didn't take the tour earlier, he put every detail in it, including the steps. You can see they like spooned the wood to give it a texture, which is really cool. And there's the studio VG. That's where he does all of his narration. But in the center of his house, in the quietest part, is where he does a lot of the client work. We'll send it to him and he sends it back to them in files. And it's a pretty good... It's pretty cool to have a studio in your house. I used to have a blue screen in my house where I would just pull it down and do work. Alan, who's watching right now, can tell you all about that. Right, Alan? But it's pretty cool to always come to PBG's Chateau. He does have a robot because... I mean... Oh, it's an iRobot. Okay. Why do the cleaning yourself when you can get a robot to do it for you? Welcome to Japan.

27:22 John Daub: That's Joji. Wow, look at Joji. That's so cute. He's trying to say something. I wonder what he's trying to say. Joji, what are you saying in this picture? Do you remember? Well, what was it? Oh, here he comes. It's my... CN? Yeah. What did you say to the girl? Say, give me my box. No. No? I forget. Yeah. I wouldn't remember either. That looks like a long time ago. I was two years old. Oh, that was two years... No, no, no. Oh, you're two years old? Yeah. Oh, okay. Yeah. Joji is the man. You're actually the star of Peter's YouTube channel. Nobody wants to watch some old dude. They want to watch Peter. Oh, they want Joji. Joji's a big Carps fan too, right? Yeah. He likes Hiroshima. There you go. See what I mean? Totally.

28:29 John Daub: Um... So as soon as Peter gets his livestream going, we're gonna turn it over to his channel. Because this is his birthday. I think... I think... Yeah. I think we should give Peter some love over there. If you haven't subscribed to Peter's channel, he will not today. Mostly plug his channel. I will do it for him. It's really hot. You can see with the sweat. But, you know, he's doing some great stuff with his channel and I like to support my friends and... Yeah. Go over there to Peter von Gomm is the name of the channel and he'll be livestreaming the rest of this. And for those of you who are in the United States about to go to sleep, you're gonna miss the cake. You're gonna miss the cake. What? Yeah. Peter... I hope he didn't go back to sleep. I hope he didn't go back to sleep. No, he's ready. Okay. And in terms of introducing... That's up to Peter to do that.

29:29 John Daub: This is Joji's bedroom. This is Joji's bedroom. This is gonna be top secret. Lily, say hi. I can't show you anything on there. Lily. Say hi to the world. Say hi to the internet.

29:39 Lily: Hello. Hi. What's your name? Three.

29:47 John Daub: Show us the sign for three. Is this three? Lily, show us three. How many is three? Can you make three? Can you do it? Lily's three. Yeah, that's it. That's how I would do it. All right. Yeah, Joji's got a lot of toys. Hey, now. No way. He's got this thing from Toy Story. Do you guys remember this one? Yeah. What? What's inside? It used to be popcorn. He ate all the popcorn. Joji ate all the popcorn. Look at this globe. Everything's in Japanese. Check it out. This is the world in Japanese. Does it say... Everyone in... A lot of people are being political and saying this is not Sea of Japan, but in here on this Japanese map, it's Nihonkai (Sea of Japan). So, might have some controversy. Joji's got some good toys. He's got gachapon as well. Look at this. This is a mini gachapon machine. Pretty cool, Joji. It's very cool. Whoa, Joji's got a lightsaber? Are you sure you want to turn that on? I guess you do. Very nice. All right. Oh, that's kind of a nice touch. Look at that. Barney's not around. I've been looking for Barney.

31:12 John Daub: Wait a minute. Wait, wait, wait. Do we have enough bandwidth in this country? It says, watch live now. Peter von Gomm. It's my surprise birthday. I just got the notification. Notifications are working! Hang on. It's my party. All right. All right, wait. Okay, you got to say goodbye to everybody. Again. You do it properly. Anyway. How did we get? Yeah, okay. Bye, guys. Bye, guys. Bye, guys. Bye, guys. Bye, guys. Come over here. Come over here. Where's Jared? This will conclude today's broadcast on the Only in Japan Go channel. We'll be moving smoothly to the PBG channel. Yeah, so let's recreate what just happened. So you guys go back. There are no poppers left. Are you serious? Oh, you want to do it from your point of view? Yeah. Are you serious? Yeah. Let's do it. All right. All right. Go back. All right. We're going to do the surprise party, a reenactment, a Peter surprise party for those of you who are joining us. Reenactment. But as soon as I said we're turning it over to PBG, we lost 150 viewers. Let's just crack it up for that one. Seriously, we lost 150. Peter, we lost 150 viewers. So that means they're going to your channel. They're going to yours, I guess, or they just went to bed. We've got over 94 people here. Oh, really? Okay. We're going to recreate this. Are you serious? You want to do this? This is your birthday wish. This is my birthday present to you. I'm going to JD upskirt. No, don't do that. What? JD upskirt. Are you wearing underwear? No. It's called commando. I learned that from somebody else. All right, everybody, hide. Peter's coming. Use a big voice like this to say hide, everybody. Everybody, move to the corner. All right. Move to the corner. Peter's coming. Are we going to do a reenactment? We're doing a reenactment of this. I'm going to keep it going just for historical purposes. So you guys can go over to Peter's channel for a first person point of view. Okay? Go over to Peter's channel for a first person point of view. All right. We're double live streaming. All right. Wait. Wait. Shh. JJ, don't say anything this time. Shh.

33:38 John Daub: Peter just woke up. He just woke up. I don't know what he's doing. He's taking his time. We know that. What did you say? What did you mean, JJ? I said ready. JJ. I'm sorry. I'm just fascinated. I don't know what's up. He's amazing. Oh. Happy birthday. It was the shoes that did it. Wait. You knew from the shoes, didn't you? Admit it. I did what? You saw all our shoes on the ... I didn't. No. There's like 100 shoes there. We forgot about the shoes. I didn't. I did not even see them. Oh. We totally forgot about the shoes. Okay. Surprise. Surprise to the other people. All right, guys. This is my commentary. Everybody go over to the PVG channel. Hold on a second. Down, down, down, down, down, down. Okay. So it's time to go over to Peter's channel. Let's give him some support over there. This is his birthday after all and that's what we do. We support our friends. So see you over there. Just go over here. You can see the link in the description. I'm going to put it over there when this renders out. If you want to see the playback of Peter's channel, it's going to be right here. It's going to be pretty cool. Enjoy. Have a great day wherever you are. Thank you so much for the support. Thank you for the presents. I'm going to spend some time with Peter later on, do a live stream with him. See you then. Have a good day, everybody.
