Breathtaking Japan Autumn Ski Lift Ride Experience

Overview

In this live stream episode, John Daub takes viewers on a spontaneous autumn adventure at Mount Daisen in Tottori Prefecture. While in the area filming for NHK, John takes a break to ride a ski lift typically used for winter skiing, now repurposed for autumn foliage viewing. The ride offers a unique perspective of the region, combining mountain views with glimpses of the Sea of Japan below.

The video captures the serene atmosphere of the ski lift ride, costing only 700 yen, as John ascends roughly 700 meters. Along the way, he highlights the unusual experience of riding a ski lift without snow and points out key landmarks visible from the summit, including Yonago City, Kaike Onsen, and the famous Eshima Ohashi Bridge. Upon reaching the top, John explores the "Yumi Katsura Lover's Sanctuary," a romance-themed observation deck complete with love locks and seating areas designed for couples.

Throughout the stream, John interacts with his live chat audience, sharing his awe at the panoramic views and the lush greenery of the valley below. The episode serves as both a travel guide and a relaxing visual experience, showcasing the beauty of rural Japan during the fall season. It concludes with the ride back down, emphasizing the value and unique perspective gained from this off-season activity.

Japan Travel Tips

  • Cost: The ski lift ride costs 700 yen (approx. $6.50 USD at the time), offering great value for the view.
  • Timing: Autumn (mid-October) is ideal for foliage; sunset offers even more dramatic lighting.
  • Access: Fly into Yonago Airport (about 90 minutes from Tokyo) to access the Daisen area.
  • Seasonality: The lift operates in autumn for foliage viewing, not just winter skiing.
  • Battery Life: Bring extra power banks if livestreaming or filming extensively, as John noted low battery concerns.
  • Romance Spot: The top deck is designed for couples; single travelers might find the seating arrangements slightly awkward but the view worth it.
  • Connectivity: Signal can be spotty at the summit; download maps or content beforehand.

Japanese Language & Culture Notes

  • Onsen (温泉): Hot springs. John mentions Kaike Onsen visible below, a popular hot spring resort area.
  • Konnichiwa (こんにちは): Standard greeting meaning "Hello" or "Good afternoon," used by John when greeting viewers or passersby.
  • Yen (円): Japanese currency. The ticket price is quoted in yen.
  • Autumn Foliage (Koyo): The primary reason for the visit; viewing changing leaves is a major seasonal activity in Japan.
  • Love Locks: A modern tradition adopted at the sanctuary where couples lock a padlock to symbolize eternal love.

Food & Drink Guide

  • Ice Cream: John mentions there is really good ice cream available at the parking area below, which he filmed previously with a drone.
  • Beer: John jokes about the lack of a beer vending machine at the summit, suggesting it would enhance the relaxation experience.
  • Vending Machines: Noted as missing at the top observation deck, which is unusual for Japanese tourist spots.

People

  • John Daub: Host and creator of Only in Japan Go. He guides the viewer through the experience, providing commentary and interacting with the live chat.
  • Staff: Lift operator who checks John's ticket at the base.
  • Chat Viewers: Various viewers interact via comments, including "Mr. Swastic," "Brady," and "Rage Relief," whom John acknowledges during the stream.
  • Romantic Couple: A pair seen riding the lift in the opposite direction, highlighting the date spot nature of the attraction.

00:00:04 John Daub: We are live from Mount Daisen. Hey everybody, how you doing? This here is a ski lift that will take you to the top and give you the opportunity to see some really beautiful foliage which is very famous from this area at this time of year. That's right, right now it is autumn in Japan and we're going to take a look up there on this mountain. So I've just bought a ticket right here. This is what the ticket is. Let me turn the camera around. Hey everybody, hope you're doing well. This is the ticket. It costs 700 yen and it allows you to go up to the top of the mountain to see this goat. Well, I don't think you're going to see a goat. And whoa, that's pretty romantic. I'm here by myself. But you go up to the top here and apparently you can see the beautiful autumn foliage with this ticket. And I'm going to ride up on one of these gondolas here. In the winter this is for skiing, but today, why not? Let's just try it out. So this is Daisen, Mount Daisen, Tottori Prefecture. I'll put a link in the description if you want to come out here and try it out. So let's try it out.

00:01:18 Staff: Yes, please. Can I take the ticket? Yes, please. Please take the ticket. Thank you.

00:01:39 John Daub: And we're off! This is awesome! I'm glad that I decided to do this. This is really different because there's no snow. Actually, I'm very used to riding ski lifts with snow. And no snow! This is weird! I don't even know if there's a signal up there. So if this signal cuts out, I apologize in advance. But this ski lift is going to take us all the way to the top. It cost me 700 yen or about $6.50 to ride this thing. Right now it's still kind of early and you can see there's nobody riding this, which is kind of like a little bit scary. It's like a ghost ride. Hey, Mr. Swastic, keep a look out for that goat. Yeah, right? Oh, man, I'm really excited for this. I've been sitting in a car all day because I'm here to do an NHK shoot for the Daisen area. And it's a town called Hoki. And tomorrow is a big octopus festival that we're going to do and we've been shooting all day. And now I get a little bit of a break to check out the top. So I think if you guys stick with me for a little bit, the view is going to get better and better as we go. But we're not exactly going at warp speed here. I wish we could just push the fast forward button and we just make our way to the top.

00:03:07 John Daub: But normally, typically you'd come with a friend. It's a little bit more romantic than it seems right now, because this is a date thing. I bet you there's a lot of people come in the evening. Afternoon is not good. You can't put your arm around your, well, you could. I would totally do that. But you can see they're very much into love in Daisen in this area. So it's going to be a little bit of time. I hope you guys can hang out a little bit because literally I'm hanging out with my invisible buddy. But we've been having a pretty good day. The weather's turned noticeably cool since the middle of October hit. It's now October 20th or 21st and around the 15th noticeably fall has hit and the weather has gotten cooler and I've noticed that the leaves are starting to change color a lot faster now. Oh, look, we got some people coming on the left side. Check it out. It's a romantic couple.

00:04:38 John Daub: It's your Shizuka done. I thought I was going to ignore them, but I was too excited. So I just said hello. That's what we do. According to Deanna's ZZR. I apologize. We're going to try to keep the resolution as high as possible. I don't know how I'm going to do that. I'll hold my hand up higher. But we're getting into the middle of nowhere. So I do hope for the best for you because I'm seeing this in full like 8K with my vision. I don't know what the human eye can see. Looks like 100K maybe. There's no pixels where I'm what I'm seeing with my eyes and I apologize if you're seeing bigger and bigger pixels. Minecraft. Oh, that was a bumpy one. Oh, how dare you. I think if you're going to make a move, this is when you put your arm around and you go, oh, are you okay? That's what I would do. Every time it goes over one of these bumps. Here, we're going to go over another one. Hold on. Wait for it. Wait for it. Wait for it. Oh, that was too smooth.

00:06:04 John Daub: Now we're starting to get into a clearing here. Check it out. Look at the beautiful blue sky we got. And this has been a real treat today because we've had clouds and rain and wind and really cool weather for the last several days. Raining on and off. Let me pan to the left here. Wow. Now you get to see some spectacular views. And I'm going to start looking back. I can't believe this is only $6.50. Oh, no way. You got to see this. I'm taking off the wide angle lens. Hold on. I'm taking off the wide angle lens for a reason. Check it out. From here, you can see all the way down to Yonago City. And Yonago City is right there on the beach. Look at that. That's one of the reasons why I love Mount Daisen. From this point, you can see the sea. We're only like five kilometers away from the sea or something. And you can see the city right there on the beach. Do you guys see that? It's beautiful. That's Yonago City down there. And you can see Eshima Ohashi, which is the bridge that I introduced in an episode on the main channel a while ago. It's beautiful. Konnichiwa. Beautiful, isn't it? I love that.

00:07:33 John Daub: So when you're skiing at Mount Daisen, when you're coming down the slope, you have a view of the sea, which is really unusual when you compare that to other ski resorts. Wow. I'm so glad that I came up here. I hope the resolution is okay for you guys. Click the like button if you're digging this. If we get up to 150 likes, I might keep the stream going for a little bit longer, like on the way back. I'm only going to go up here for just about a minute and then make my way back. I'm not going to be up here long, but let's explore a little bit since we're up here. Looks like we're coming up to some kind of point. Okay. Right angle lens. I put the wide angle lens this way so you get a view. You guys are riding with me now. This is so much fun. Check it out. You can see our shadow up there because I'm holding you with my hand here on the camera. There's a ski jump. Oh, there's an observation deck there. You can see some people. I'm watching them watch me. This looks like we've reached the end. Yeah, there's the wheel. This is pretty much the end, and we're not going to stay up here for too long. But oh, you can see the peak, the top of Mount Daisen. All right, here we go. I'm going to jump off. Wait for it. Wait for it. Wait for it. That was pretty smooth. That was too smooth. That was cool. This is totally worth it. It's not the easiest to get out here. Check it out. They put like little date chairs. Slightly uncomfortable to look at. It seems kind of a lonely, lonely area. They should put a tree between two ferns or something. Okay, let's go check out the view.

00:10:17 John Daub: Let's check out the view. And then we're going back down. This is beautiful. Wow. This is so spectacular. I can't believe we're up here. I just on a whim. I'm right now we're filming for NHK and the cameraman went up here and they didn't say not to go up here, but I did it on my own volition. Sorry. It is a little bit cloudy, but we're about 500 meters. Maybe 600, maybe more, but maybe 700 meters up just panning. So you get a quick look at the valley down below. And then if you start panning left, you can see the mountains that separate this side, the Sea of Japan side with Hiroshima and Okayama. They're on the other side of that mountain range. So you got to cut across the mountains to get to Hiroshima and to Okayama. And we're on the Sea of Japan side. And once again, like that down there is the city Yonago, which has an airport. That's how we flew in from Tokyo. The flight's about 90 minutes, a little bit less than 90 minutes, but you can see the bay there. It's such a beautiful site. And from the beach where the curve is right here, there's a beautiful beach. Kaike Onsen is there. And from there you get an awesome view of Mount Daisen looking back at the mountain. It is beautiful. Pure awesomeness.

00:12:14 John Daub: I don't think everybody got the notification, by the way. We got like very few people watching. All right. So they do stuff like this. Let's see what they have here. The Yumi Katsura Lover's Sanctuary. This is definitely made for romance. Here I'll read it for you. Yumi Katsura Lover's Sanctuary. Here I declare this land as lover's sanctuary to impact the joy and the magic of encounters, blissful marriages, and raising a happy home. I send my blessings to your encounters and wish you a wonderful future. The Bridal Mother signed it. Ah. Nice. I'm digging it. I like that, you know, when they put a little bit of effort into it. And you get these little locks that you can buy and lock your love up here forever or until too many are there and they just cut them down and throw them away and start anew. Look at that. Ah. Yasu loves Ayane. That's so cute. Kissing sound was not necessary. You can lock your locks there too. That's nice. I do like the fact that they have these seats here. So you can just sit here. I would bring a drink and just chill and watch the sunset. The sunset is actually this way too. So it's going to be even more beautiful in maybe an hour or so. It should be just beautiful. And you look at the sunlight just like spraying through the clouds. It's beautiful. It's really beautiful.

00:13:58 John Daub: Mr. Swastic writes in, this place needs a vending machine. It totally does. In fact, I'm surprised they're not selling these locks by vending machine. But look down there. Do you see the green? The beautiful green. This is another reason why I love this area of Japan. It's just so lush. This is where all the cows eat. I filmed this in an episode for the 106-year-old lady. Why Japanese live so long episode. I think with the drone, I got a lot of the green down there from that parking area. They have really good ice cream. I flew my drone down there. But I'm even higher than the drone now. All right. Apparently, should we do that? Should I rocky this? All right. I'm only going to do this just for a minute, okay? Because I don't want to stay out here too long. 3, 4, go. 1, 2, 3, 4. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. The kid's counting his way down. He said there's 30 steps. Uh-oh, I'm going to get in big trouble. The cameraman and the director are coming. I'm going to get busted. Oh, I shouldn't have come. It's not me. Who are you? I'm James Brown. Nice to meet you. Maybe I got away with it. All right. One of the few times where I really don't have anything to say. Yeah, it is gorgeous. I don't have words.

00:17:21 John Daub: All right. I'm going to take a photo for Instagram. All right, guys. You want to say cheese? All right. That's a quad for Instagram. So peaceful. Guys, I'm just going to stay here for a little bit longer. Is that okay? I think whoever you're watching in the world, just kind of soak this up too with me. Once again, that's Yonago City where the sea is curving, the Sea of Japan curving in the bay. Mihono Seki in the distance. That's Shimane Prefecture. The lake is on the left side. And between it, that's where Eshima Ohashi, the bridge that Japan's most terrifying bridge is. We're live, like watching this right now. It's just stunning. It's almost like majestic. The sun is just like spraying through the clouds. I'm almost glad that it's not perfectly sunny because the clouds add a lot of personality character to the view. Especially since we're up here. Somewhere between the clouds and the land. It's like we're floating above with the landscape. The sun is breaking through. So much more beautiful. This would be perfect for a time lapse. But I just don't have the time for the time lapse. Hey Brady, thanks. Massive fan, dude. Beautiful view. Shout out from Akasaka Mitsuke. Ah, Akasaka Mitsuke. That's Nagata-cho. I often switch chains there. Thank you very much for that. That should keep this livestream going for another 15 minutes. Or until my battery runs out.

00:21:24 John Daub: I'm going to film this view for Instagram a little bit. Wonderful. Maybe I should take a panoramic, huh? Let's try that. I don't often use the panorama. Wow. Wow. You guys want to see that? Alright, who wants a copy? I guess I'll put this on Instagram as well. Yeah, this is, um, that's Yonago City and we're in Hoki town. Actually, we're on the foot of Mt. Daisen right now. So I'm going to return. I'm going to go down again right now. I'm going to pretend like I'm not here. Hey, Rage Relief, thank you. Your videos have been so insightful to me for the last six months as I prepared for my first trip to Japan in two weeks. Thank you for the awesomeness. Thank you. I really appreciate it. I'm not here. It really is a beautiful view. I think a lot of people are going to be staying here longer because the sunset is not too far off. But we're going to make our way down. Mainly because I have 17% battery life. And I want to give everybody the full view, the full feeling. This is pretty darn cool.

00:23:52 John Daub: Check this out. What? Where are you guys? Totally should be here. Check it out. Isn't it amazing? Where's the beer vending machine? We're at the beer vending machine. I put the wide-angle lens so you can get a look at how beautiful the chairs are here. You can just chillax. And kind of take a look at the entire area. Check that out. Oh man. Okay, I'm just going to sit here. Ah, it feels like you guys are with me. This is so cool. Isn't it cool? Right? This is luxury, guys. I can't believe I'm here. Hold on a second. Back to place. Back to place. I'm going to put you on the table now. And just check it out on your own, okay? You guys can observe the view for like 30 seconds. I am missing my wife. I really do wish she was here. She'd love this. Nice, huh? This is the view from where I'm sitting right now. All right, guys. This is way too good to pass up. Am I right or am I right?

00:27:01 John Daub: Actually, I'm going to end this livestream now. I'm at like 5% battery life. But I want to thank you once again for supporting the show and making this channel as popular as it's been. We're in the other side of Japan away from Tokyo. This is so cool and so special. And to have the 360 people watching it is so awesome. This is the way you make your way back. You can see the gondola, the ski lift is taking everybody back down. It takes you about seven minutes. I guess you guys saw it. It takes you about seven minutes to get down. I don't think the notifications went out because I streamed this morning. But anyways, I think it's just fun to watch the playback. It's going to be pretty neat. And if I pan up a little bit, you can see in the distance Yonago City. And it's just such a beautiful, not a clear day, but clear enough where you get really long views. And this is nice. This is nice to share with a small group that we have watching here. So if you're in Tottori Prefecture, you're definitely going to visit this place. But I will see you in the next livestream. Maybe tomorrow. Alright? So have a good day, good night. Thanks for the support. Thanks for the super chats I saw. I saw you guys for contributing. So I appreciate it. And I'll see you in the next livestream. Have a good day. Good night. Good night, wherever you are in the world. Enjoy the view for the last 15 seconds. And I'll see you on the other side.
