Paris to Iceland via Charles de Gaulle Airport
Paris to Iceland via Charles de Gaulle Airport
Overview
In this episode of Only in Japan Go, John Daub broadcasts live from Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) in Paris, France, documenting a chaotic layover during his massive round-the-world trip. Accompanied by his wife Kanae Daub, John navigates flight delays, expensive airport prices, and the unique architecture of CDG while preparing to fly to Reykjavik, Iceland. The video serves as a travel vlog checkpoint, reflecting on previous stops like Munich, Sri Lanka, and Mumbai, while outlining plans for Iceland including hunting for the Northern Lights and visiting the Blue Lagoon.
John provides practical travel advice regarding taxi flat rates in Paris, European SIM card roaming policies, and the realities of budget versus national carriers like Icelandair. The episode captures the holiday spirit of reconnecting with friends and family, as the couple makes their way from Tokyo back to the United States for Christmas before returning to Japan. Viewers get a raw, unfiltered look at airport life, duty-free shopping temptations, and the excitement of chasing auroras in the dark Icelandic winter.

Japan Travel Tips
- SIM Cards in Europe: John highlights the "Roam like home" policy in Europe. Buying a SIM card in one EU country (like Germany) allows free roaming in others (like France), making connectivity easy and affordable.
- Paris Taxi Flat Rate: There is a flat rate for taxis between Charles de Gaulle Airport and Paris (around 50 euro one way). This avoids meter anxiety, getting lost, or waiting time charges, which is preferable when carrying luggage.
- Airport Costs: Be prepared for high prices inside European airports. Water can cost 3 euros, and food prices are significantly marked up compared to city centers.
- Iceland Budgeting: Food in Iceland is notoriously expensive. John mentions hearing a cheeseburger with fries could cost $40. Plan meals accordingly or bring snacks.
- Winter Daylight: In late December, Iceland has only about 3 hours of daylight. Sunrise is around 11:00 AM and sunset around 2:00 PM. Plan activities around this limited window.
Japanese Language & Culture Notes
- Nihon (日本): John mentions returning to Nihon (Japan) after the US leg of the trip, completing the circle. This reinforces his base of operations despite the global travel.
- Christmas in Japan vs. US: John notes he returns to the US every two years for Christmas because everyone has holidays then, whereas in Japan, Christmas is not a national holiday, making family gatherings harder to coordinate.
- Omiyage (Souvenirs): While not explicitly named, John's focus on buying specific gifts (cognac, Toblerone) for family reflects the Japanese culture of bringing back omiyage from trips.
Food & Drink Guide
- Baguette Sandwich: Purchased at the airport bakery. John got chicken, Kanae got seafood. Approx 6.40 euro each. A necessary buy due to expected high costs in Iceland.
- Brioche: Kanae is seen enjoying a baguette sandwich from Brioche d'Or.
- Macarons: Available in duty-free, branded with Paris/Eiffel Tower themes.
- French Cheese: Duty-free shop offers various cheeses including Brie de Miel (10 euro) and Foie Gras.
- Dom Pérignon: Champagne available in duty-free (2009 vintage noted).
- Toblerone: John recommends massive Toblerone bars as the perfect gift for fathers.
- Kinder Eggs: Noted as a "little touch of Germany" available in the French airport.
- Water: Bottled water costs approx 3 euros at the gate.
People
- John Daub: Host and narrator. American living in Japan for 30+ years. Currently on a round-the-world trip.
- Kanae Daub: John's wife. Japanese. Appears throughout, shopping for food and gifts.
- Eric and Juliet: Friends living in Paris who John and Kanae visited during the layover.
- Lenny: Viewer/friend who helped purchase a SIM card at the airport.
- Michael Chavez / Janet Paniagua: Viewers mentioned during shout-outs.
- Lowell / Bruno: Viewers/friends mentioned near the end of the stream.
Key Takeaways
- Charles de Gaulle Chaos: CDG is described as chaotic, confusing, and architecturally strange ("hamster tubes"), but part of the Paris experience.
- Round-the-World Routing: Flying the "long way" (Eastbound via Europe) can offer cheaper business class or premium economy options compared to direct transpacific flights.
- Iceland Stopover: Icelandair allows easy stopovers in Reykjavik, making it a cost-effective way to visit Iceland en route to the US or Europe.
- Connectivity: European roaming laws make traveling across multiple EU countries with one SIM card very convenient.
- Reconnection: The primary purpose of the trip was for John and Kanae to reconnect after a challenging year, prioritizing experience over convenience.

Full Transcript
00:00:01 John Daub: Greetings from Charles de Gaulle Airport here in Paris, France. That right there is our Icelandair flight departing at 12:55 from Paris to Iceland. And on the left here is another Icelandair flight to Reykjavik, same location, five minutes later than ours. However, our flight is delayed, theirs is not. It doesn't make any sense. This one's supposed to depart at 1 p.m. and this one's at 12:55. This one's ours, this one's delayed. That, my friends, is the madness that is Charles de Gaulle Airport. Hey everybody, I'm here at the gate. It is crazy. It is fun. The madness is what I live for. And my wife, Kanae Daub, is enjoying it over there getting a baguette sandwich. Do you see that? Brioche d'Or. Hey, I see Nosh is here. So I'm gonna be taking some questions. What do you guys think? Anything about this trip that you're curious about?
00:01:15 John Daub: I kind of talked about this a little bit earlier, but I'm going home the long way. And I wanted to do this because it was a chance for me and Kanae to travel and reconnect after a very challenging 2018. This is our last destination before we reach where I wanted to go, which is the United States. Instead of going Tokyo to New York, we went Tokyo, Sri Lanka, Mumbai, Dubai, Munich, Paris, Reykjavik, and New York. And then we go back to Tokyo, completing the circle around the world. We've got a chance to see a lot of airports. Munich Airport was probably the nicest. I was very surprised with Munich's airport. It was so relaxed, so calm. I loved it. I wish I had one or two more days or an entire week in Munich. It was just such amazing time, Christmas time. Sri Lanka was also amazing. We didn't have enough time there. Mumbai was with family. Paris was the most chaotic of all the places. And we came here simply to see our friends, Eric and Juliet, two people that we just loved very much. They just had a child and we got to spend some time together, which is part of the spirit of Christmas. You want to meet your friends and your loved ones and people that you care about.
00:02:33 John Daub: And this is really cool. We flew into Paris. We had a choice between taking the train and then a taxi from the airport over there. Instead, we decided to have a baguette. Actually, we're probably gonna have to do that because our flight's delayed. It's just docking now. The Icelandair, you can see right there. That's the flight that we're getting on. So yeah, we're gonna have some time. And so there's a flat rate for taxis in Paris, which is amazingly good. It might be a little bit pricey, but it seems to work out pretty good because you know that the driver's not gonna charge you for the waiting time and getting lost and stuff. It's 50 euro one way between the two of us. It just made sense to do that. So I took a taxi to my friend's house and then we took a taxi back to the airport. So it was a hundred euro round trip for two people, which is pretty good. If we go on the train, maybe we save a little bit of money. But it was just such a nightmare to get around with the luggage. You have to think about that too, the mental factor. And on a long trip like this, you just want to take it a little bit easier. Happy holidays. Merry Christmas to everybody.
00:03:50 John Daub: So this whole trip is about me and Kanae reconnecting and it's been a really amazing experience so far. We've seen so much in such a small amount of time. And now we're going to Iceland to Reykjavik. And the reason why is because when I was researching this, this flight from Paris to Reykjavik was the cheapest flight across the Atlantic that wasn't an LCC, a low-cost carrier. Although Icelandair is sort of a low-cost carrier, but it's a national carrier. It's very confusing. But I looked into it and it was easy to do a two-night stay in Iceland. I was like, who wouldn't want to do that, right? So I kind of sandwiched in two nights in a hotel in the capital of Iceland and we're going to be there looking for the Northern Lights, dipping in the Blue Lagoon. These are things you got to search online because it's just really amazing. And just kind of feeling the vibe of what Iceland is. Maybe going out to eat once because I heard it was ridiculously expensive. And I might do a meetup in Iceland. If anyone, if we even have any viewers in Iceland, send me a message because I'd love to meet you. Kanae and I don't know anybody in Iceland. It'd be a lot of fun.
00:05:06 John Daub: The one thing that is really curious to me is that there's only three hours of daylight at this time of year in Iceland and we're coming in the dark even though it's 4 p.m. we arrive, I believe. So I guess the light is from... Sunrise is 11 a.m. and sunset's like 1:30 or two o'clock. It's so... It's gonna be pretty weird. So I'm looking forward to two nights of darkness. Like pitch black. And seeing if we're lucky the Aurora, which is the Northern Lights. And I'm gonna bring you with me. I'm gonna see if I can get it. We've gotten a lot of super chats on this trip so I want to thank everybody for that. I'm gonna put that to good use. I'm gonna try to get a SIM card over when I get to Iceland and then use that to try and bring you the Northern Lights for those that have been watching this series of trips as we make our way back to the United States for Christmas and then back to Japan. Going all the way around the world. If we can just get the northern lights that would be so cool in a live stream. I've never seen them before. I've traveled to half of the world's countries. Eighty something. This is gonna be pretty epic.
00:06:05 John Daub: So yeah. Well I'm gonna go get that SIM card and maybe tonight. I'll do another live stream in about five hours. Whenever I think there's a chance of the Northern Lights, I'm gonna go live and hopefully we have a strong signal from Iceland and I can bring you that experience. It's gonna be pretty cool. Alright. Now that I've kind of... and then we got some people joining us. I'm gonna go over and say hi to Kanae and then walk around this airport a little bit, okay? What do you guys think? Good afternoon. Wait. Welcome to Scandinavian Airlines. That's not our airline. All right, I'm gonna show you again, here's the Icelandair flight that I'm taking. Hey Lenny! This is gonna be so epic, Lenny. Lenny just bought the SIM card, everybody. So when you see the northern lights, thank Lenny. This is gonna be pretty epic. There's the flight that's taking off and I'm gonna take you around these gates where Icelandair departs in Charles de Gaulle. So let's go take a tour around. Oh, maybe I could see them mishandling my luggage. That's the kind of videos that go viral when they throw people's bags. They seem to be doing a good job though.
00:07:43 John Daub: All right, this is the duty free shop that's inside here. Oh, there's Kanae. Look at that smile. Even though we're delayed, she's still got a smile because she's drinking three euro water. That's right, that bottle of water, one of them only cost three euros, two of them cost six. Insane. So she's got a big smile right there. Hey, Michael Chavez, can you please say Merry Christmas to Janet Paniagua? Hey, Janet Paniagua. Merry Christmas, Janet Paniagua. Did I do it right? Merry Christmas, everybody. Kanae, I'll do it with Kanae in the background. Merry Christmas. There you go. All right, let's take a quick look and see what's on offer here. All right, I should've gotten the Evian here because it's two euro 50 cheaper. And you get two of these. Oh, wait, you get two for three 50. That's ridiculous. And then there's macarons here. I got some fresh from a bakery to take home, but these look really good too. The Maxim's Paris is a famous shop and we've got Eiffel Tower looking stuff here. Let's see what else we got here in the gift shop. Pringles in French. It's pretty cool. Down here, I don't know. Oh, these are Pringles in French. Chips. Paprika. Natural. Sounds good. Sounds better in French, doesn't it? Paris. Who wants a box of these?
00:09:50 John Daub: They always, you know, these look like lunch boxes when I was a kid. Eiffel Tower. Very nice. The sandwich selection could be a little bit better. It's kind of weak. That's why we went to the place next door. See here, some of the headlines in Paris today. Friends football. Cosri. Something, something. La Tribune. Investir. You can't even read the headlines. It's all behind metal. Encore beaucoup de ronds-points d'interrogation. There you go. There are the headlines from Paris. All right. This is our gate, and these are our people. We will be flying to Iceland together with these people. So, it's going to be fun. It's going to be good. And there's our flight right there. 12:55. It's not boarding yet. And there's our beautiful flight right there. Ah, gosh. I will be so happy when I get into that seat. Icelandair does not have any in-flight service. I don't think there's any food or beverages. I'm not sure. Is there? And then over here is Qatar Airways, which is such a luxury airline. Flying through the Middle East. Awesome.
00:11:32 John Daub: You guys want to see some baguettes? All right. Let's take a look. All right. Let's look at this baguette. This is chicken, I believe. And then here's some other ones. This is the only shop in this area of the airport. It looks very good. Patricia Bird, thank you. Oh, and these desserts look good too. That's an apple tart. I believe. These croissants look good too. And down here, this is, they look like the same sandwiches here. Kanae almost got this one. Looks like it's a salad and a tart. I've never seen anything like that before. Tarte aux cerises pressées. Looks good. And these are just cheese sandwiches. It's like 6:40 euro. And we got two of them. I got this one, the chicken one, and she got the seafood one, I believe. I forget. And of course, the Kinder eggs. Little touch of Germany here. I love it.
00:12:55 John Daub: All right. So we went into the convenience store. Let's go into the duty-free shop until we get kicked out. By the way, perfume is 20% off. Just want to lay that out there. All right. Let's go see what they got in here. Got cheeses. Oh, they got cheeses. And what's this in the shape of the Eiffel Tower? Olive oil? Eiffel Tower olive oil? It's weird. Let's see here. They got all sorts of cheeses. It smells like cheese here. It smells so much, they got to take it 20, 30% off here. This is brie de miel fromage de France. This is 10 euro. This is 12 euro 40. Oh, we should totally take one back to America. But I think we got cheeses in New York, so I don't think it's necessary. There's foie gras, which I think Kanae is against that. I can't get that. I was looking for... oh there's Dom Pérignon. Dom Pérignon. What year? It's 2009. I guess that's a good year because it's the only year.
00:14:39 John Daub: So my father, when he was traveling a long time ago bought I think it was like liquor with a pear in the bottle and when I was a kid I was fascinated with this bottle of liquor with the pear in it. I don't see it here. No I don't see it here but I did get him something from here. I got him some cognac brandy something or other something that he would like. It's very hard to shop for fathers I think. He doesn't wear a necktie. You know what? You know what's always a big winner? See that right there? Massive Toblerone bars. I'm telling you they're the happiest thing you can get anybody and those massive Toblerone bars last for like a month or two. Month unless you're a kid and then they last maybe one day all that chocolate smothered in your face.
00:15:43 John Daub: All right here we have some of the signs in Paris you can get the idea where Johnny some guy named Johnny here I guess he's doing something with the albums and then there's a Coca-Cola in French ad it's pretty cool how you doing Agatha Raisin not sure who that is but I guess that apparently makes some tea yeah Jennifer is not too far away hey Michael you pronounced it perfectly yes thank you Michael this Eiffel Tower I love it um actually this gate is not very big at all that's about it so this is our gate right here and everybody's getting ready anxious to board let's go say hi to Kanae Kanae is gone Kanae is over here okay are you getting something what do you want to get oh he's replenishing the sandwiches we already had a baguette sandwich we're gonna we're gonna need that for Iceland because it's I'm kind of afraid I heard it was really expensive oh that's the chocolates from Ikea dime there you go it's always funny to see all the different kinds of candies in Europe Kanae's getting something all right guys I put my bags over here.
00:17:40 John Daub: I got a new hat that's my old one there I got this one in Munich that looks good this is a Maxim's Day by sure looks good same color with the old hat yeah that's pretty much it all right it looks like we're getting ready to board all right just Kanae here there's Kanae she sees us this is pretty funny all right Kanae's buying something she paid oh what'd she get is that for me we got her a pillow in Narita before we left she's been using it um even when we don't have an airplane ride she'll still use it maybe it's for all of us yeah Strumento you got it right John will you be in Nihon for Christmas no Kenjiro thanks for asking we're gonna be in the U.S. for Christmas we're gonna be in the U.S. for Christmas and I go back to the United States every two years or so just so I can spend some time with family at this time of year because it's the easiest everybody has a holiday during the Christmas time and yeah this is that year last year we were back home in Japan so next year we'll probably be staying in Japan next year what'd you get Kanae what'd you get what'd you get tell us for for who for your friend it's not fair it's not for us.
00:20:02 John Daub: I'm in Charles de Gaulle and I gotta tell you something okay when I was in Germany when I was in Munich I met two really nice guys that sat next to us at what was the name of that restaurant Schneider's Brauhaus it's and it wasn't so hot far from Marienplatz very authentic Bavarian food and we it's one of these places you don't have a reservation you just sit down and people start you just order and everyone talks to everybody I love it I love this style of restaurant and two really nice guys there I guess they're my age actually and they just started to talk to us and telling us about Munich and one of them said so you're going to Charles de Gaulle because it's the 1970s style airport ago really yeah I just kind of retro yeah it's like it has hamster it's 1970s style hamster for humans airport hamster tubes this entire airport is filled with hamster tubes for people and it looks like everyone is going everywhere through tubes it's insane yeah Schneider's Brauhaus in Munich that's it that's the place you've got to go there it is a put it on if you go to Munich put that hot number one on your list the food is very reasonably priced and very authentic it was an incredible experience 10 beers on tap there which is also very good and Kanae had orange juice she doesn't drink but Charles de Gaulle is one of the most craziest chaotic I don't know just hard airports to get around but that's what makes it fun it's the chaos and that's what Paris is chaos but I love it you gotta love it yeah viva la France right.
00:21:54 Kanae Daub: Do you have any comments about the food? About the Iceland you excited is it your first time yeah what do you want to eat in Iceland she has no idea.
00:22:08 John Daub: So if you have any ideas about Iceland or you're from Iceland yeah the animals the bird yeah it's called the puffin puffin puffin it's very popular in Iceland Oh okay so you're gonna look for the puffin go to the Blue Lagoon and look at the Northern Lights and that's it? And I forgot the name of it. Gael? Gael? Yeah. So we can see the... I don't know how can I say in English? Okay if you're from Iceland yeah the food is not too great we're getting a report in but if you're from Iceland or you know anybody in Iceland let us know because it'll be pretty cool to meet up with somebody who knows what's going on.
00:23:07 John Daub: All right that's all just kind of wanted to check in and say hi because I had a lot of bandwidth left from my Vodafone card which is what you're watching. I think the live streams from Europe have been so clear I'm very impressed with Vodafone and the 4G LTE in Europe is so clear compared to Japan. It could be the iPhone XS that I'm using now instead of the iPhone 7 Plus. But bravo to Vodafone in Germany because it works great. You can roam in Europe. So if you buy a SIM card in Germany, you can use it just freely. Just turn on roaming and it doesn't charge you anymore. I think they have a new rule. Roam like home or something it's called. I forget. Europe's got all these really great packages that sort of helps the consumer. Except for this Article 13 thing. I'm still not sure what that is. And I don't think the people who passed Article 13 know what that is. Is it like a copyright-protecting thing that sort of hurts creators? More on that if you have any more, you can leave something in the comments. But I just want to thank everybody for following us on this trip. It's been a lot of fun. We'll see you in Iceland, okay? Leni, thank you so much for getting that SIM card for us. I appreciate it. This is going to be epic because of that. I will see you. Hey, there's Lowell. Bruno's in there. If you want to write to him, he's in there. He's in where you're from. That's always cool. You can get a cheeseburger with fries in Iceland for what? $40? How much do you think a French fry is? $40. Like 4500 yen. That's insane. There goes Air France which just dwarfs, which just makes Icelandair look so small. Look at that. Air France is on the way out. All right, everybody. Just checking in. If you have any questions, leave them below. I will answer them from Iceland. Time to see some Northern Lights. We're going to have a good flight. Thanks, everybody. See you in a few hours.
