Capsule Office Concept Inside Tokyo Station

Overview

In this episode, John Daub explores a innovative new service launched inside Tokyo Station: the "Station Booth," a free capsule office concept designed for travelers and remote workers. After searching through the bustling station, John locates the booths situated inside the JR area, near the Narita Express platforms. He demonstrates the booking process, which is done online via QR code, and steps inside one of the personal use booths to test its amenities.

The video provides a detailed tour of the compact workspace, highlighting features such as a comfortable seat, desk, monitor, USB charging ports, and surprisingly high-speed Wi-Fi. John conducts a live speed test, revealing download and upload speeds that exceed many home connections, making it an ideal spot for content creators or business travelers needing to upload large files quickly. He also interacts with the on-site staff who are present to assist users during this initial launch phase.

This video is particularly valuable for digital nomads and travelers visiting Tokyo, offering a practical solution for finding quiet, connected workspace in the heart of the city's busiest transit hub. John explains the time limits, the difference between personal and business booths, and the availability of similar booths in Shinagawa and Shinjuku.

  • Booking: Reserve online at stationwork.jp. Registration requires address confirmation.
  • Cost: Free during the launch period (as of Jan 2019).
  • Time Limit: Bookings are in 15 or 30-minute packets. You must leave when your time is up.
  • Wi-Fi: Free high-speed Wi-Fi is available; password is written on the desk inside the booth.

  • Work Culture: The concept reflects Japan's evolving work culture, accommodating remote work and "telework" in transit spaces.
  • Etiquette: Strict time limits are enforced to ensure fairness for all users. A timer alerts you when your session is ending.

Food & Drink Guide

  • Ekiben (Station Bento): While John does not eat in the video, he mentions ekiben are available nearby in Tokyo Station. These are perfect for grabbing a meal before hopping on a Shinkansen.

People

  • John Daub: Host and creator of Only in Japan Go. He tests the technology and provides commentary on its utility for travelers and creators.
  • Staff: A station employee stationed near the booths to assist users during the launch phase. They help with entry and answer questions about the service.

Key Takeaways

  • Free High-Speed Workspace: Tokyo Station offers free, bookable capsule offices with internet speeds exceeding 200 Mbps.
  • Convenience: Located inside JR stations, making them perfect for travelers with layovers or commuters needing a quiet spot.
  • Availability: Three locations initially (Tokyo, Shinagawa, Shinjuku), with personal and business booth options.
  • Creator Friendly: The upload speeds make it a viable spot for YouTubers to upload large video files quickly while on the go.

00:00:00 John Daub: Greetings from Tokyo Station. I was looking in the station for like 10 minutes to find this place, but you can see over my left shoulder, yeah, it's a capsule office. It's one of the most unique things that I saw on the news yesterday. So I decided to come to Tokyo Station and check it out and to see what a capsule office is like. It's actually free. I registered online. I just need to swipe a QR code and it'll let me in. I have it for 30 minutes. So let's go over there and check it out, okay?

00:01:03 John Daub: So I'm going to try to use this QR reader and there's number one. Okay, touch it here. Let's see if this works. QR code. Oh, this is pretty cool. That was the staff and I guess that they were here to help people getting a lot. What the heck is this place? This is awesome.

00:01:49 John Daub: So this is the office. I got a wide lens in here. I'm just going to pan around. Look at this. It's basically a phone booth. This is basically a phone booth. There's the office workstation. You have a desk here. You have a monitor. This is actually really cool. There's a monitor. There's a USB port here that you can plug in devices for charging. There's an outlet to plug in a computer. If you have a laptop and you're working here, it's very cool. The seat here is actually really comfortable. This is really cool. I'm so glad that I've made the reservation to try this out. The glass is kind of frosted over so people can't look in there, but you can see outside. So if I wanted to have a meeting or something, I think I could just open the door and have an interview with somebody. That'd be pretty cool. If there is a problem, you can push that alarm and it'll alert people here. I actually didn't bring my computer, but all of these things here are set up so that you can get an idea of what's going on.

00:02:53 John Daub: You can use this monitor. This is pretty cool. You have a USB, this is a USB 3 but looks like a 2.0 but it works okay and then an HDMI. Awesome, you plug it into your laptop. If you have a MacBook Pro it might be a little bit more difficult, you need a dongle but you can turn it on and you have a monitor. I gotta bring my MacBook Pro next time. I'm gonna put this down and we're gonna kind of try this virtual office. This is so cool. All right, this is how I hate trickers, thanks so much for the welcome to the Office Club. This could be the new Only in Japan office. Now you can only book in packets of 15 and 30 minutes so you can only use it for a total of 30 minutes and then after that you got to leave because the next person is gonna be coming. There is staff out here and I believe they're here because this is a new thing. I don't know if they're gonna be around forever but they're very helpful and I asked her like how to use it. You touch it in, the QR code comes on but the website is stationwork.jp (stationwork.jp). And if you go in there you have to register, confirm your address and then you're basically in.

00:04:10 John Daub: Now this only has three locations right now. It's at Tokyo Station inside JR, it's not out in the station, out by the Marunouchi subway line. It's actually inside JR going towards the Narita Express. Then there's one in Shinagawa and one in Shinjuku. Three locations and there's two booths for business and two booths for personal use. I picked one for personal use. I wonder what it's like for business, must be like more comfortable seats or something. You log in, you get an email confirmation and then you get this which is a site that tells you that you have registered a station booth personal and it's free. It's free. How can that be free? I reserved from 11:30 to 12 o'clock and that's right now. I have 12 minutes. It took me 15 minutes to find this place, it's actually not easy but once you know where it is it's so easy.

00:05:09 John Daub: All right let me check this out here. It's so tight in here it's hard to really give you a good angle. I should have brought a clamp or something but if you want to charge your phone you can put it in here. That's about it. I really don't know what else. Oh wow, all right check this out here. I'm putting it down here, there's a heater so if you're cold there's actually a heater. That's really cool. Actually I can't turn it on right now. This is one of the coolest things I've ever seen just the fact that they went and they came up with this idea to make a capsule. This is an awesome idea. I would pay to have this if this becomes too popular. I bet a lot of people start using this. You can come here, bring your computer and work for 30 minutes and it's quiet, free Wi-Fi.

00:06:10 John Daub: Actually did bring some work so I have I've actually prepared 200 postcards for my Patreon supporters and I have to put stamps on it so I can do that here in the quiet. I get a desk to do that for the next 10 minutes. Pretty cool. You guys have any questions you can ask right now. This is a livestream so you can see everyone is live chatting in here. If you have any questions I'm happy to answer them. Number one it's free. Number two you have to reserve online. Right now almost nobody is using them so they're just basically like lockers for free for people. It's not a capsule hotel but it is a little bit tight here.

00:06:53 John Daub: Let me see, okay that's as far as my diagonal. All right so it's about a meter. This is the diagonal, all right so it's about a meter a meter and a half and then this way it's about 137 to 154 centimeters maybe the height. Let's say can I stand up? Yeah I can stand up. Yeah if you're I think if you're over six foot four six foot three it's gonna be pretty tight. The seat is very comfortable. It's something that I think I can see it for half an hour and be pretty happy. But I like the fact that these places exist. What's it mainly for? There's two booths for business and two booths for personal so if you just want a place to sit and use the internet you can do that here. You have a laptop and you want to upload a YouTube video or you're working and let's just say I want a place to sit for 30 minutes and upload my YouTube video. I can plug in my computer here in the electrical outlet you see that right there and then I can release the video right here and I have a monitor. If I don't want to use the monitor here I can actually plug in the HDMI into this which is so cool. I can watch a movie for 30 minutes here and just wait for my train. There's free Wi-Fi which is incredible.

00:08:14 John Daub: I'm using my 4G signal to actually do this. Let's check the Wi-Fi speed why not. Right here I have there's a bunch of Wi-Fi signals so we're gonna go with the station booth personal. Let's see what happens. Password, I don't know what the password is. Here how do I get the free Wi-Fi inside the booth? The password is written right here on the desk so I'm gonna put the password in. I'm not gonna say what it is because... boom we are connected to the Wi-Fi inside here. Now see right there station booth personal. There's one for business. Now we're gonna check the speed. This is what's gonna be pretty cool.

00:09:13 John Daub: Okay I have the speed check app. Let's see how fast this thing goes. Ready go. Come on what 220 Mbps it's off the charts. I should be live streaming on this. I could do 4K off of this. This is intense Wi-Fi speeds. All right the upload speed it's off the charts. You know what? This is faster than my house by like three times. I could actually come here and upload my videos in five seconds. Download speed 170 megabits per second. Upload speed 221 megabits per second. That's triple, triple than the fastest I think I've ever... It's like double the upload speed that I've ever seen. This is ridiculous. And I'm four stories underground. So I guess the Wi-Fi signal is going straight to, I don't know, the wires going across the world or something. The internet.

00:10:15 John Daub: So there you have it. That's pretty much all I have to say about this. If you have any more questions, that speed is crazy, Jason. It's insane. I could stream in 4K, but I'm actually using the SoftBank 4G LTE right now. No pocket Wi-Fi necessary. You can come here and get the booth. This is the postcard that I'm going to be sending to everybody. It's from an onsen during a snowstorm. And I send it out to supporters on Patreon. I can actually leave the booth because it took me so long to find this place. I can't stay here forever. I just wanted to show you guys this. And I'm going to be using this more and more. Nosh, this is absolutely wonderful for creators, especially for YouTubers. If you want a fast place to upload your videos, I think this is it. You'd still have to register on the website, but it looks pretty easy to do. It took me five minutes. It's only in Japanese. That's another thing. But you can use Google Translate in order to figure this out.

00:11:21 John Daub: She said, please prepare all of your stuff. You have five minutes left. So there's a timer in here, so it'll let you know when your reservation is finished. So basically, we're supposed to be wrapping up right now. And what I'm going to do is actually, I kind of want to take a thumbnail of this. This is pretty cool. So I'm going to ask the lady if she can take a picture.

00:12:19 Staff: Thank you for coming.

00:12:21 John Daub: Would you like to take a picture with me?

00:12:23 Staff: Yes, please.

00:12:24 John Daub: Oh, thank you. I'd like to take a picture of you.

00:12:27 Staff: Yes. This is my first time.

00:12:28 John Daub: Yes, I'll go. Wait a minute. Oh, wait a minute.

00:12:32 Staff: It's dangerous.

00:12:34 John Daub: It's okay. I have a door. I'll go.

00:12:37 Staff: Yes. Yes. I think it's better to take a few pictures.

00:12:39 John Daub: Yes. Yes. Thank you.

00:12:43 Staff: It's okay. If you can't take a picture, please tell me. I'll take it again.

00:12:47 John Daub: Okay. Oh, that's great. Is everything okay?

00:12:50 Staff: Thank you. It's done.

00:12:51 John Daub: Yes. This is new, isn't it?

00:12:54 Staff: Yes.

00:12:55 John Daub: I saw this on November 28th.

00:13:01 Staff: Oh. Yes. I was surprised when I registered yesterday.

00:13:04 John Daub: Oh, really? It's very convenient.

00:13:07 Staff: Yes. I think it's probably empty now, so it'll be easier to take pictures.

00:13:11 John Daub: Yes. Yes. Yes.

00:13:13 Staff: Yes. Please take care of it.

00:13:15 John Daub: Yes, please. Please take care of it.

00:13:15 Staff: My businessman's Wi-Fi speed is fast.

00:13:18 John Daub: Oh, is it?

00:13:19 Staff: Yes. It's 200 megabits. It is? Read that? It's really fast.

00:13:23 John Daub: It's tasty, isn't it? [?]

00:13:24 Staff: Yes. Yes.

00:13:25 John Daub: I'll use it again then.

00:13:26 Staff: Please, please.

00:13:27 John Daub: I'm frightened, and I have saved all the time. So please, please.

00:13:30 Staff: Yes. Yes.

00:13:31 John Daub: I can just apply and take 30 minutes shoots.

00:13:33 Staff: Yes.

00:13:34 John Daub: If they're free, I can extend it, so I'll take the shots again later.

00:13:37 Staff: It is also done, so if there is an extension built in, yes.

00:13:40 John Daub: Thank you. What's different?

00:13:42 Staff: Someone from personal and business. This is for individuals. This is for people who are applying for jobs. This is for individuals and for the general public.

00:13:50 John Daub: I see. All of this is in Japanese.

00:13:55 Staff: Yes.

00:13:56 John Daub: I see. That's great! Thank you so much!

00:14:00 Staff: Please come again!

00:14:01 John Daub: Thank you!

00:17:04 John Daub: Much happy new year to everybody all around the world. I'm back in Japan and we're back doing Japanese-based live streams which is pretty exciting. I'm happy to be home. Yeah there you go so here's the station inside of JR. Everybody is going everywhere all over Japan. The Shinkansen is to the left and the Yamanote Line is to the right. There's lockers there's stairs there's stores there's ekiben (station bento) there's people there's travelers at the station. And this right here this is where I'm just going to stop this there is the exit to JR station in the basement so you have to enter into JR in order to go and use the capsule office just so you know. But there's also two other locations Shinagawa and Shinjuku Station. Hope this was fun. I'm going to go back to the capsule office and take another screenshot thumbnail for the video but if you like this video please subscribe. I'll see you guys tomorrow for another live stream Only in Japan Go. Gotta get back to work in my capsule office.
