Mt Fuji 300km hr from the Shinkansen Window
Overview
In this live stream episode, John Daub takes viewers on a high-speed journey aboard the Nozomi Express Shinkansen from Kyoto back to Tokyo. The main attraction is the fleeting but majestic view of Mount Fuji, visible for a short window as the train races through Shizuoka Prefecture at 300 km/h. John tests the 4G signal strength while streaming live, sharing personal anecdotes about living in Fujinomiya at the base of the mountain and his experiences climbing it.
The video serves as both a travelogue and a technical test, showcasing the realities of train travel in Japan, including frequent tunnels that interrupt signal and views. John points out specific landmarks like Shin Fuji Station and discusses the evolution of Shinkansen train models, comparing the older 500 series to the current N700 series. It is a unique perspective on one of Japan's most iconic sights, viewed from the comfort of a bullet train seat.

Japan Travel Tips
- Best Seat for Fuji: When traveling from Kyoto to Tokyo, sit on the right side of the train for the best views of Mount Fuji.
- Timing: The view is visible for only about 10–12 minutes between Shin Fuji and Atami. Be ready with your camera.
- Signal: 4G signal is strong but will drop frequently in tunnels. Download content beforehand if needed.
- Train Choice: The Nozomi Express is the fastest option, hitting 300 km/h.
- Onsen Stop: Atami Station is a great stop for hot springs (onsen) if you want to break up the trip to Tokyo.
- Green Car: For more comfort, consider booking the Green Car (first class), usually car number 8 on some trains.
Japanese Language & Culture Notes

00:00:00 John Daub: We are now live and now the Mount Fuji show begins. We just went through a really long tunnel. I'm on the way back from Kyoto to Tokyo. And I'm gonna test out Japan's 4G signal on the Shinkansen as we roll by 300 km per hour or even more. Looking at Mount Fuji live. This is pretty cool. I'm in the Nozomi Express bound for Tokyo. And that over there you can see, I used to live on the base of the mountain. You can see that the village right there, that's called Fujinomiya (富士宮). That's where I lived in, I think it was 2000, 2001. I lived in Fujinomiya for about 3 or 4 months. Really cool town.
00:00:42 John Daub: I would wake up, open up the window, and now we're going through Shin Fuji Station really fast. Fuji Station is behind us. We're gonna get Mount Fuji views for about 10, 12 minutes. Part of Fuji City is really industrial. You can see tons of factories, chimneys, and you can see Shizuoka prefecture. Hey everybody. Welcome to the Mount Fuji show. This is Shizuoka prefecture. We just cruised through Shin Fuji Station at 300 km per hour. Because this is the Nozomi Express.
00:01:21 John Daub: Wow. Mount Fuji is 3,776 meters. I've climbed it 3 times, 2 times more than I probably needed to. But it's such a beautiful mountain volcano. Especially when you're looking at it. And you can see the side of the Shinkansen when you're coming from Kyoto. You can tell it just looms over all of the buildings. Again, I'm live streaming at 300 km per hour. I'm just blown away by this. We're gonna go through a tunnel soon and lose a little bit of it.
00:02:04 John Daub: On the other side of the mountain is Mishima, which is another really interesting area aside to see Mount Fuji. It's 3.5 pm, so the sun is starting to go down. Oh, we're starting to lose the view a little bit. You're gonna see some green tea fields and we might lose some of the signal. So if it gets pixelated, we'll be back on there. Hey Gretchen. Happy birthday. Trees, plants as we roll through here, depending on the signal. But Shizuoka is famous for its green tea, its matcha. It's really good. And this area especially produces a lot of it.
00:03:01 John Daub: It's gonna be a little bit blurry, so I'm gonna turn the... in the cars, car number 2 and 3 on my way back to Tokyo. That's right. I was in Kyoto to film an episode for... scouting in Kyoto for an episode I'm producing on the main channel. [Someone] is here helping me out this time. And we're heading back to Tokyo, but I thought it might be a good idea to bring you with me and just show you a little bit of Mount Fuji.
00:04:00 John Daub: Now we have to go to the right side and you're just... It's a little bit... It's harder to see the corner there. Gotta catch it fast. We'll carve a little bit in and we'll be able to get one more view. Hey, AdiMekrai, thank you. We'll get one more view. Oh, there it is, okay. It's coming in and out, but... the Shinkansen from Tokyo. Give you a little heads up. We will see it again just a little bit. It's now on the other side of this mountain. So I'm gonna keep you company until I see it, because I'm getting dizzy as well. Yeah, about 180, 190 miles per hour we're going. It feels that way. Especially when the objects are really close to you.
00:05:01 John Daub: This is Mount Fuji. It's over those mountains up there. You see it? That's the top of it. So if Mount Fuji were ever to explode, they would have a good view of the summit and the lava flowing down the side. Think about that. Views of Mount Fuji for another couple of minutes. Alright, I think the coast is clear. And the Mishima side of Mount Fuji. And I've ridden my bicycle from Tokyo to Kyoto before. It takes about five days. It's on a one speed bike. But when you do, you can see Mount Fuji's right up there, you see. But when you do, you have amazing views of Mount Fuji and the area. And while you're riding the roads going towards Kyoto, yeah, it's pretty nice to get those shots looking up at this amazing mountain.
00:06:12 John Daub: Just impressive. But this is a reason to take the Shinkansen. But it's also a reason to fly. Because the views... On Instagram, I posted about a dozen pictures of the views of Mount Fuji from the airplane looking down onto the peak. It's so majestic. I've climbed Mount Fuji three times. Two times too many. As I always say, once is enough. Once may be too much. It's not really much of an interesting climb. For those of you who are joining late, definitely watch the playback because we had a really great time for about five minutes as we cruised past there.
00:06:51 John Daub: This is the last couple of weeks. Makes its way beyond the tunnels and the hills. So we're going to be going in and out. It's actually 4G signal, not Wi-Fi. So I never use... Well, I use Wi-Fi sometimes. But almost... I don't use Wi-Fi. I use 4G exclusively. Right now we're in a tunnel again. Just give it like one more minute. I don't know if we're going to go... The signal is going to get cut out again. But there are a ton of tunnels between here and Tokyo and Shizuoka. Lots of mountains. Like this is a long one. We've been in this tunnel for a while. That's right, Samantha. Have faith. This is where I am in it.
00:07:55 John Daub: I don't know if you guys can see. But I'm between cars 1 and 2. One day, I too shall sit in the green car. Which is car number 8. Like really cool chairs or with kids that need to be diaper changed. So we never really had this on the Shinkansen. It's changed so much since 1998 when I first came here. Back then we had the 500 series. Back then we had the 500 series which looks like a spaceship. But the problem with the 500 series Shinkansen was that it would shake when it hit 300 kilometers per hour. And the shaking was really bad. And so I think they discontinued it a few years later. And now we have the N700 series.
00:09:15 John Daub: Alright. Now we are through to the other side. It's going to be looking like it's going really fast. But I'm going to look back and see if we have any view at all of Mount Fuji. And if we don't then... I'll take you back to the seat and then say goodbye. But you can see out the window as well. Mount Fuji is going to be this way. We're going through Atami Station. Yeah, I think it's Atami Station. That's where... Probably from Tokyo one of the best onsen towns would be Atami. I can't even believe that we have any signal at all in this tunnel.
00:10:06 John Daub: All of these... There are tons of little villages between the hills and the valleys. And you can only... See them on the Shinkansen. It's kind of neat when you... When you come out of a tunnel for like 10 seconds and you see a bunch of houses then it disappears. How do those people get to those houses in the valley there? I really don't know. Yeah, I probably just passed Atami. So I think after we get out of this next tunnel, might have a slight view of Mount Fuji. But it's not going to be really, really good. Not like in the beginning of this. I started this view... I put a link in the description showing you exactly where I started this live stream. That's the best spot to get of the Shinkansen at Mount Fuji. And a lot of movies [use] background video from that point where I started this video on the bridge that looks like it's going like this. It's a beautiful, beautiful spot.
00:11:02 John Daub: And I think we said like six or seven minutes Mount Fuji was gone. So it really isn't around for very long. Do you see it? I don't see it anymore. But guys, connected. Another station. That might be the [Kata station?]. Alright, it's got dark really quick. Looks like it's raining in Tokyo. It's Kanagawa now, I believe. We're getting close to Kanagawa. We've left Shizuoka prefecture. Shizuoka is like one big tunnel. Kilometers per hour or more. I don't even know. Mount Fuji is now completely gone.
00:12:04 John Daub: However, you can see Mount Fuji from Kanagawa. You can see it from Tokyo. But it's really hard from the Shinkansen at this angle to see it. You start to see it after those tunnels for those who are still watching. And after the tunnels, it is just like boom, there's Mount Fuji. Boom. It's right in your face. And then it's gone again. And it's an amazing view if you get a chance to catch it. I'm going to take you back to my seat and then say goodbye so you get a chance to look at the Shinkansen, okay?
