Summary

We Need to Talk ASAP

Overview

In this historic livestream, John Daub accidentally launches the official Only in Japan Discord server earlier than planned, turning a scripted rollout into a spontaneous community celebration. Starting with technical glitches and a missing wide lens, John quickly adapts to the surge of viewers, explaining the purpose of the new platform: to connect Japan lovers worldwide beyond YouTube and Patreon.

The video serves as both a tutorial and a town hall. John outlines the server structure, including the open General Chat and the exclusive Samurai Chat for Patreon supporters. He emphasizes community safety, introducing the moderator team (Nosh, Katayama, and others) and establishing a strict one-strike ban policy for disruptive behavior. Throughout the stream, John interacts via voice chat, testing the "Push to Talk" feature and sharing laughs with long-time viewers.

Key moments include the origin story of the channel's mascot scapegoat, Toby (crow), revealed through a vintage clip of a crow stealing salmon from a bear in Hokkaido. The stream concludes with a surprise appearance by John's wife, Kanae Daub, who experiences the voice chat chaos firsthand, highlighting the personal and intimate nature of the Go channel community.

00:00:01 John Daub: Oh, this is the worst entry to any live stream in the history of this channel. Yeah, I'm gonna have to edit this one a little bit, but yes, I'm now launching the Discord server. Hello, everybody. All right, I just gotta put the wide lens on. Whoops. Hello, hello, hello. I had music and everything. I wanted to start this with music. It was supposed to be this huge rollout with a buildup where I had a script in my head, and then I just accidentally pushed the live button, and it ruined everything.

00:00:43 John Daub: How you doing, everybody? Welcome along. Welcome. 224. And within one minute, we have almost 300 people. This is insane because we are about to launch this. This is incredible. This is the thumbnail. This is changing everything. This is a new era.

00:01:02 John Daub: Billions of years ago, there was something called the Big Bang that created a lot of energy and the world in which we are in now. Billions of years later, man has walked on this earth, has walked on the moon. We have crawled from the sea, found legs, gone to the trees, swung from vine to vine, eventually created the internet in the 70s, which leads us to where we are today, the Discord server.

00:01:45 John Daub: This is amazing. This is a chance for us all who love Japan, this channel, to talk to one another. We have a dozen moderators. We're ready for everybody. This has been exclusive just to our Patreon supporters for the last few months of testing, and I think it is now ready to be rolled out to everybody, which is insane. The amount of activity happening right now on the Discord server, we've just completely broken the internet. No, we haven't, but it's pretty cool to see everybody in here.

00:02:20 John Daub: What is Discord? Discord is a platform where we can now talk to one another. We can now interact freely in our own server. This is important because a lot of us really love Japan. We love this series. We love the channel. We love our community, and on Patreon, we have a very good community with over 500 supporters. We talk a lot to each other, we have a community page where we share photos, and a lot of people know each other.

00:03:23 John Daub: We've had community members go out and live stream together. We've had people meet up in Los Angeles and meet up in Germany. It's really cool to see our community grow, but now it's time to open up a new platform to our entire channel, to our community, which is you, the Go community, our live streaming channel. I think you know me a little bit more intimately than the main channel, and if you're a subscriber to the Go community, that means you might sort of, semi, kind of like this community.

00:03:53 John Daub: Sometimes things don't work out your way. Anyways, yeah, the gimbal needs some food. So does John, for that matter. I'm here to officially launch this in the worst possible way. Gimbal failures, going live without any plans, and that is the Go channel, which is sort of spontaneous. And that's what this is here.

00:04:27 John Daub: You're going to find in the Discord server a lot of really friendly people, which you are now invited. In the link in this video description is a link for you to come and join us in the general chat. The general chat is going to be really, really busy right now. Actually, I see the chat going faster than the chat on this live stream, which is crazy. In fact, if you go there right now, I will show you. Look at all the people joining the server. This is crazy.

00:05:24 John Daub: As more and more people join, more and more fun stuff is going to happen. Yes, we have our own specialized emoji, everybody. Just so you know, we have our own specialized emoji. This is pretty cool. We have an amazing community on the Discord. It's been beta testing. We kind of worked out the kinks. So join us, won't you? To the general chat.

00:05:55 John Daub: Now, it's important. I believe that Nosh, I gave you a lot of heads up, didn't I? Like five minutes. Maybe even not even that. I believe everybody's pushed to talk, right? So then if I go into the voice chat, which is going to be really crazy, it's going to be pushed to talk. So let's just try this out right now. I don't even know how this is going to work. I see like we just got like two, 300 people just join us on the Discord server.

00:06:19 John Daub: I don't know if you use Discord. Discord is a platform for gaming, okay? It's a platform that people use to talk to each other when they're playing games. However, I've noticed through the wonderful viewers that we have who love Discord that there's another purpose for Discord. It's to connect us through travel, through YouTube, through series, and connect our community. And that's really exciting.

00:06:47 John Daub: Now, everyone is invited to our general chat. And I know that by introducing to this, some people use this as a perk on Patreon, meaning if you pay, you can communicate with us. I didn't really like that idea. I think it should be open to everybody. And if you want specialized chats, then we have a Samurai chat, which is only open to Patreon supporters.

00:07:14 John Daub: If you support on Patreon, I think it's $5 a month, you're allowed into the Samurai chat. Use the same email address that you use for the Discord server with your Patreon account, automatically you will be added into the Samurai chat, which is much, much smaller. And I go in there and sometimes I'll just start talking to people. It's like random. It's like a meetup, basically. And if you have questions about Japan, that's probably where everything happens here.

00:07:44 John Daub: What happened to the Only Japan 360 channel? It was demonetized by YouTube, and it just didn't pay for itself anymore. And I think three people got hurt watching it. One lady fell out of her chair and threatened me. She said, like, I made her fall out of a chair. It was my fault for her injury. I got scared. People, general audience, people were not ready for virtual reality. I don't know where my responsibility started. And that was like three years ago.

00:08:11 John Daub: But I might go back into it. I don't know. When someone hurts themselves watching your video, I don't want to get into that. I don't have that kind of coverage. This is very exciting. We're going to try a general voice chat, which is going to be insane. Please, when I do this, push to talk.

00:08:31 John Daub: How do you do that? I've been instructed by Nosh and Katayama, who are smarter than me. Very smart people. Katayama, we can thank Katayama for this. Go into your button here, into your settings. Push this, user settings. When you go into here, I need you to go into voice and video. And then I need you to go in here to push to talk. And everybody, I think everybody pushed to talk. And that will change your settings. So we just cannot have a thousand people talking over one another. It's just going to be insane.

00:09:14 John Daub: Now, I want you guys to understand something. If you are bad, you are banned. And there's only one strike rule. So don't try to be disruptive. It's community. It's a new community. So people are on edge. They are very, very ready for this. So if you start spewing the words that we know are not good in our society, you will be banished. And there's nothing I can do about it, because I don't even know how to bring you back. Seriously, I don't know how to bring you back. You're going to have to talk with Nosh.

00:10:01 John Daub: You don't have to be a Patreon supporter to be in the general chat, but I kind of hope that you do because I really do need continued support because this year, Kanae Daub, my wife, is going to be joining me more on trips. I'm going to be hiring an assistant and hiring somebody to help me edit, and I do need the financial support to take the channel to the next level. Talking about taking it to the next level, this is taking it to the next level.

00:10:26 John Daub: Hello, I am here. How are you? I'm feeling good. How are you doing? I love you, man. This is insane. First time in a while. Everybody, raise your hands before you speak. It's very hard. There's no raising a hand in the world. I'm going to mute this. This can get a little bit crazy, but it's Push to Talk, so I can hear the people who didn't activate Push to Talk. It's echoing in the background. If it's voice activated, then if you're listening to this, it will be activated on here and there'll be an echo back, and that kind of disturbs the community.

00:11:19 John Daub: So right now it's on mute, but the voice chat is very, very cool. It's a chance where we can now talk. I will never, ever be lonely again with Discord. Anytime I'm feeling lonely, let's say Kanae Daub throws me out of the house, this will never happen. We're very much in love. I will be able to just go to my Discord friends and go, oh, I've been thrown out of the house. This is awful. Someone please tell me something encouraging. And that can have 40 people tell me that I'm an idiot. This is great.

00:11:46 John Daub: This is exactly what I've been dreaming of all my life, to put our community together in some kind of voice chat like this. We are ready for as many people as we can take. If you are interested in being a moderator and you're a good person and a Nosh or one of our moderators knows who you are and has seen you in the live chats, then we can definitely use your help. We want to keep this as clean and friendly and kick out bad people and encourage good people because this is a community.

00:12:18 John Daub: If you want smaller groups, I encourage you to join us on Patreon and you will automatically be put into smaller groups on the server. But everyone should be able to communicate in this awesome community that we have. I love it. We do have some original emoji just to make it exciting. These emojis include the Karate Kid. That's me smelling the roses. That's me with a towel on my head. That's me with glasses when I was going to Peter von Gomm's party. That's Peter von Gomm. That's Space Boat, which is just incredibly cool. The Shinkansen. That's Kevin. That's Toby (crow).

00:13:32 John Daub: These are all free. You can just go in and use it. And I think someone is designing these. We have Discord Nitro. If you want to, I guess, sponsor the channel with your Nitro, you can elect to Nitro and boost this channel. We have some different categories as well. There's inside of the general chat, there's food and drink, questions on Japan, destinations, sharing photos, language study, meetups, John Live, waiting list. There are going to be announcements. This is where I'm going to announce a lot of the first stuff.

00:14:21 John Daub: If you have this app downloaded, you're going to see it. You're going to see the notifications faster for new videos. You're going to be able to join us quicker. I will first always though put the live stream on Patreon first. People who are welcome supporters. And then eventually that'll go on to the Discord server, probably from other Discord users. But I just want you to know if you're a Patreon supporter at the welcome level, that will not change. You will have as much support on Patreon as well as access to emailing me and things like this.

00:14:57 John Daub: I don't want to lose my Patreon supporters by opening it to everybody. But I don't think it's going to happen because I think if you're open to everybody and everyone opens up to you a little bit too, and that's the purpose of this live stream channel. That's the purpose of Discord. I want to thank Katayama for setting up this server for me like six months ago and longer and Nosh for also helping and encouraging and Dimitri and Solaires and UFO Bob and Purple Bandit who are moderators. We're going to add some more moderators as well. So we're going to be ready to take on the bad people. But I don't expect you to be bad. I expect you to be good.

00:15:35 John Daub: I'm kind of an optimistic person. I just see everyone who loves Japan will have a chance to interact with other people and help each other and discuss topics that are important. And this is what I'm talking about. There's a lot of new Patreon supporters that are coming in and that means a lot to me. So this is counter of what a lot of YouTubers think. If you open up a platform to more people, more people will actually support you instead of trying to be greedy and making this a perk. I think it should be open to everybody.

00:16:16 John Daub: Tyler, you may need a new gimbal. Tyler! And no, I don't know what's happening. This is the gimbal that Matsumi gave me and I'm just going to see if I can balance it better. I have a counterweight on here. But I'm going to try to fix it first. But I might need a new gimbal. Tyler, thank you. That's really kind. I'll take you on a trip to the camera store maybe and get the new gimbal. Or I'll just order it on Amazon.

00:16:38 John Daub: If you do have any questions with the Discord server, I'm going to be answering them. You can email me on Patreon if you're back or there. Just send me a direct message through there and I'm going to try to troubleshoot this and in another live stream. Sometime in the next week, I'm going to do some troubleshooting and Q&A so we can try to fix any problems that people might have initially. From this amazing group of people that we have in our community, we're going to look for moderators.

00:17:08 John Daub: And then next month in July, we're going to open the Discord server to the main channel, which has 1.1 million subscribers. And we're going to see this even get crazier. The crazier, the better. But I don't want it to be crazy bad, but crazy good with information and people connecting with other people. Please do remember that this is a social media network just like Facebook and Instagram. Whenever you start talking with strangers at first, realize that they're strangers, but they all love this show.

00:17:46 John Daub: I can't be responsible for meeting bad people. Just be very careful and use your discretion and decision making. This is something I think that every creator should let you know. We have an amazing community. Most of the people have known each other for months. Some people for years in Patreon. The Patreon has been back for over two and a half years now. So a lot of people know each other. You know each other from the chats, but just so you know that if you do meet up with people, make sure you feel comfortable and you get to know them before you do something like this.

00:18:17 John Daub: I do hope that more community members can meet up. If you are in Japan, it's pretty cool to meet up at a cafe. Now you have friends. If you've come here for meetups, you can meet people that are already in Japan. That's another thing. I don't want anybody to come here as a solo traveler and not be able to make a friend. So I'm hoping also that we have a category for that, meetups, which is right up here, one of the categories. That would make me really happy. Just make sure that you take care of yourself and that you're safe with this because I don't want anything to happen to anybody.

00:19:21 John Daub: Try not to speak everybody at the same time. Oh my word. There's like 30 people in this chat. This is crazy. I'm just listening to everybody. My favorite anime, which is kind of underrated to foreign viewers. If that medical spray is anything like that Gatsby stuff, I hated it dude. It says it's supposed to go on your skin and I did it. But I had to go to like three bathrooms and try to wash my armpits because it burned.

00:20:06 John Daub: It's not like Icy Hot or anything like that. I don't think it's supposed to go on your armpits. Yeah. The students at the school said yeah you can put it on your skin. I'm like alright. Hey John. When am I getting my Butterfree Gatcha Pop? We're working on that. So like it's pretty crazy in there. I just quieted it. Now it's really quiet in here. I've gone to the samurai chat. There's nobody in there. It's so quiet in the samurai chat. Is there anybody in the samurai chat?

00:20:50 John Daub: But there's two people in the samurai chat. So this is like when things get crazy in there. It's easy to go into the samurai voice chat and then we have less people. So that's a reason to. I'm here John. Hey Eric. Hey what's up buddy? Good. This is exciting huh? It's a lot smaller and that means it's easier to communicate. Yeah it's pretty cool though. A lot of people. I bailed and came here.

00:21:44 John Daub: But it got pretty crazy. And if this gets crazy we have a daimyo chat and these are other supporters at like a higher level. I can escape there. Of course I have what's called emperor status. But I'm very nimble as an emperor and very kind. I could reinstate you if another emperor bans you. I'm one of the kinder souls. But I'm very nimble. And I will go between all of these groups. And sometimes you'll see me in there. But this is for you really. This platform is for you guys to use and talk to one another. And I hope you use it well.

00:22:22 John Daub: You guys doing okay in here? Yeah we're doing okay. It's nice and quiet. No one's really talking. It's like walking on eggshells. The response is simply amazing. Sorry I just kind of unleashed this with that much warning Nosh. Well Taito's doing his job. He's already filtering messages. Do we have enough moderators? So far so good. There's been a few questionable names. Questionable names? Oh no. What does that mean? Some people had some questionable names. They haven't done anything.

00:23:12 John Daub: Purple Bandit how are you doing with your moderating skills? She's new. It works so like when I turned everything on it just started going off. And I think I might have broadcasted some over my microphone. This is cool. This is very cool. Oh Tyler's here. Hey how's it going? Hey Tyler how's it going? Oh man. Yeah really. I'm in the office. This is cool. This is awesome.

00:24:01 John Daub: I noticed there's people even taking advantage of the Japanese language only chat. Yeah that's good. It's not been very active now with over like hundreds of people now. We can use all of the categories that you guys have created. I thought there was a lot of categories but it seems like it might not be enough. It's exciting. So there are currently 430 members. That's actually quite a lot. I think we just had like 20 or 30. So we've gone from 20 to 30 to 400 really quickly. I'm really happy about that.

00:24:45 John Daub: Hello. Is this working? It is now. Okay. Thank you. Oh thank God. I thought that you had muted me. I had problems with my computer because I'm stupid. I would never mute you Soleris. I would never mute you. Are you at Disney now? No. No I'm at school. This kind of caught me off guard. Spontaneity. I literally I'm working on the website. I'm editing right now for menus because the new Tanabata menus are out. So I'm editing all the menus on the website for Tanabata days and I go on Discord and be like, oh I wonder what everyone's doing and the floodgates were open.

00:25:25 John Daub: Tyler, by the way, I sent you out the gachapons from the livestream last week. So that should come sometime this week. Which is so cool. And Nosh, I have your gachapons right here still. But I'm putting them in the mail this week as well. As Deborah's from last year. Quick question. Sorry to piggyback on this as well. Do you have my Sanja Matsuri postcard? Yeah. That's also going, it's actually right here on the desk. I'm not going to show the address. It's going in the mailbox right after this livestream.

00:26:17 John Daub: You're welcome. Please don't share my address on your video. Yeah, I have a label maker. I just have to print out your address. It's going in there. I'm not going to show your address. That would be wrong. That would be very wrong. So as the day goes on, more people are going to be watching this playback and joining us on the Discord server. This is sort of an introduction of how crazy, how much fun this can be.

00:26:48 John Daub: So when we do livestreams, this is going to be a lot more active than maybe even this chat here. But I'm going to be looking at this chat. And sometimes during the livestream, because I have two phones, I might go and just start talking with our community in the livestream. So this is a great chance for us to be able to do this. And if it ever gets too crazy, I just go to the Samurai Chat, which has about ten people right now. So it's not as crazy in the Samurai Chat, and it's mostly our community.

00:27:21 John Daub: But in the general chat, if I swing back here... Cool. Because it's insane. There is a lot of people. Hey, general chat. Just saying hello. I think everyone's got the Push to Talk feature on, right? Yep. Okay, cool. So I'm going to chat a little bit more with everybody on Discord after I end this livestream in a couple of minutes. So I'll be back in here in a little bit. Thanks for joining here.

00:27:57 John Daub: You're very welcome. I pushed the space bar and it activates the talk. I feel like I'm 12 years old again. You know, like when you had a fort and you made these cups with a string and you could talk to your brother in another fort nearby? Sort of like the same thing. I know we have apps like this where you can do this, but nothing on a level like this. And I think it just requires a lot of trust in our community to manage themselves, the spirit of Bushido and honor. You must feel this, I think, for this community to work.

00:28:29 John Daub: But if we ever have any problems or trouble, then I think that's when the server might not live. But right now we have given it life. I kind of wish I had the Discord before I came to Japan because I know John was mentioning on his stream about having like a meetup thread because when I came to Japan I was pretty much solo and I was just seeing all the sites. I didn't really get to meet people there. Yeah, this hopefully can change everything. If not meet me, meet others.

00:29:06 John Daub: So I can, yeah, I think that's sort of a cool thing. We actually have a meetup category. I don't know if that's limited just to Patreon supporters or to everybody, but I want to see if I can get that available to everybody so no one ever comes here and not have somebody to talk to. You'll have at least the Discord to talk to. You can be in a cafe and just talk to us. We're here to listen to you. So you're never really alone again. We have our community of nice people.

00:29:34 John Daub: And this also brings the voices of the people that we've been seeing in the chat. Like I've never heard some of these voices we've never heard before. We're now starting to hear it for the first time. We've seen everyone in the chat. So now we can kind of meet people and you're not really 100% anonymous. There's no video chat in the chat. We're in Discord right now. And I think it's kind of good that way. The video is through here, through YouTube. But we can be connected through voice and through chat.

00:30:08 John Daub: Keep in mind that moderators will go through here. And if you do violate our rules, you will be banned. Nished. Banished to another server. I'm trying to think if there's anything else that you should know about this. I don't think so. I think it's just time for you now to just enjoy the Discord amongst everybody else. And I do have a lot of new videos that are coming. I'm planning to release six videos on the main channel in June. So it's going to be a very busy month.

00:30:44 John Daub: But it's because of the support of Patreon and the support of the Only Japan Go community that I'm able to do more now. And I just want to thank everybody who's been a Patreon supporter and beta testing the Discord server for this release, which is just huge to me. Kanae Daub doesn't even know what a Discord server is yet. We'll introduce that to her too. But for us, for our community, it's our time. Wow, we have a lot of people who are entering this. It just keeps on moving. This is great.

00:31:26 John Daub: So I'm going to take some questions to the general chat. Just through chat here. If you have any questions about Japan, I can now see it as well as here, which is kind of dark. But I want to use the general chat on Discord for this. Do we have anyone moderating in the general voice chat? I don't think so. Do we need somebody? I mean, if there's that many people in there and we're opening up, it might be a good idea. Yeah, we probably could.

00:32:02 John Daub: If you do see someone abusive in the general chat, just call them out and then we will ban them. But don't do something out of spite. Do we need proof? I don't know how this works. I feel like that should be common sense to have proof in an accusation. Yeah, I can't be the judge and the jury. I'm too soft. I can swing a sword. I just swing it. I can't aim it at people and chop. You can swing like a Spochan. Yeah, I can spite you, but I can't cut you.

00:32:50 John Daub: However, you will be banned if you do bad stuff or talk bad stuff. Just be a gentleman or a lady. For some reason I always think that the guys are the bad ones. It's not true. There are some evil ladies out there too. They're just rarer. Someone really likes the PBG icon. Apex, you seem to love them all. This is going to get chaotic. I think it will get chaotic, but eventually people will get used to it. It's about getting used to it.

00:33:30 John Daub: You may want to separate join spam. For everyone watching the live stream right now, it might be a good idea to read our rules channel. There's also a frequently asked questions channel for any questions you might have. Is that available to everybody in general or just to Patreon backers? They should be available to everyone. You got to push before you talk. The rules channel is in our important thing at the top. And the FAQ is right above general in the Only Japan main category.

00:34:10 John Daub: So this is what it looks like, everybody. I'm temporarily turning off the announcements from the users. Nosh has given us an announcement that he's turning off the announcements. That's good. So we have rules here. The rules were written by Nosh. Welcome to the Only in Japan official Discord server. Reminder. Live streams are meant to be fun. Don't get caught up with the fact checking or create drama. This is John's real life. The places he visits and the people he meets are part of his real life, so please respect that.

00:36:00 John Daub: John is very busy. Please don't direct message him. Don't do it. Ask a moderator or admin to get in touch with John. Do this this way. Don't try to get in touch with me. Moderators are always right. That's kind of true. I don't even mess with the moderators because then they would banish me. Don't say, imply, encourage racism. Absolutely not. No place for it here. Don't make threats to others. Yeah, there's no place for that here. Keep it family friendly. You can be silly, but there's a line. Do not post NSFW content. No gore, no porn, nothing illegal.

00:37:19 John Daub: Please try to use the designated channels accordingly. If you feel a channel could be added, please contact the mods. We're really happy to hear your feedback and listen to how we can improve this. Don't be derogatory towards other streamers in here. You can have your own opinions, but Discord isn't a breeding ground for hate. The best way to earn people's respect and be kind and usually people will reciprocate. If you have hate, people will back away, especially here in Japan, especially me.

00:38:01 John Daub: Obey the mods and staff if a command or warning is given. Yeah. If a warning is given, then that's probably a good sign to be more respectful. Just to check yourself. Sometimes we get heated in the moment. I understand that, but check yourself. Do not attempt to post personal information or social media of John or any of his stream's friends unless given the okay to do so. Respect the privacy of others. No bots, no spams, no post links to other Discords. Do not promote your YouTube channel. This isn't a place to promote your material. You'll get banned if you do that.

00:38:57 John Daub: Talk to the moderator first. It's okay to add them to your profile and refer to others to look. Please have fun and be excellent to each other. Absolutely. It's supposed to be fun. Everybody's a different kind of person. I woke up and I don't know why for some reason, but YouTube recommended I watch this video on road rage and I saw people get out of their cars and start punching people. That's not what we have here. If you have Discord rage, go to the mirror and look at yourself.

00:39:32 John Daub: Usually if you look at yourself and you see how angry you are, it doesn't look good and you will check yourself. Punch yourself. But don't do it because I said that because then it could get me in trouble and then you say John made me do it. I did not make you do it. See what happens with the internet? Everything can be really misinterpreted. Just be careful out there. This is an amazing thing where we all can communicate now and just respect the platform. Respect the people around you. Understand that you don't really know them.

00:40:10 John Daub: When people meet me on the street, I'm really happy that they know me, but you don't really, really know me. Just like with each other here. You don't really, really know each other even though you think you might. Just respect one another at first and then before you start to get too friendly, you get to know somebody first. That's sort of the way I operate. I'm cool though because when I meet people on the street, I'm somebody who thinks I'm everybody's friend. That's very easy for me, but for a lot of people it's not the same.

00:40:35 John Daub: So that's why I always say just try to back off and be respectful to everybody. The blame has shifted from Toby (crow) to John. Yes, I don't want to take the blame. We created Toby (crow) because we needed somebody to put blame on. And then you can put the blame on Toby (crow) and he flies away. And there's always another Toby (crow) because the city's full of crows. So place the blame on a bird. Let the bird fly away. Don't get angry. Put the anger on Toby (crow), the bird, and the bird will fly away. And as the bird flies, your anger will dissipate and melt.

00:41:17 John Daub: And that's why Toby (crow) is such a perfect scapegoat for all anger because he just goes away, never comes back. But if he does, you can be angry a little bit. But remember, there are other people around. You want to put your best foot forward and not put your foot in your mouth. Like I've probably done many times in this livestream. The ghost story, probably tomorrow. Peter von Gomm and I are going to tag team this. We'll probably do the ghost story tomorrow. Be ready. Probably in the evening too. So just a little heads up to our moderators because you might be scared and not be able to moderate at all.

00:42:02 John Daub: I doubt it. It's not that scary. But it is a true story. It'll still be PG. No big words. No gore. Maybe some pictures of... But they're old. They're drawings. Small drawings. Pictures. Might be somewhat. But not too gory. They're historical pictures. I didn't draw them. They haven't been drawn within a hundred years. So they can't be bad. History can't be bad. History has judged them. They're still around. Therefore, they're still good.

00:42:38 John Daub: Is the scary story about Toby (crow)? That is too scary. One of Mikey Chen's moderators is asking to help out. You okay with that? If you're okay with that, I'm okay with that. All right. Over and out. I'm not going to be the newest moderator anymore. You don't lose your shine. Your time of being kicked and punched and beaten is over now. So you can ride on top. We didn't really do that. Sometimes people literally will take what I say and not see the smile.

00:43:28 John Daub: They're actually ridiculously kind. I'm sure you know that. They are. It's good that we have another moderator. The more moderators that we can add. Because this is different than the live stream. This is 24 hours. It doesn't close. When the live stream is over, then the moderating doesn't really need to take place anymore. We have a moderator that will go through some of the comments to delete. Sometimes Ramsey Silent will do that because he's awesome. But in the Discord server, it's open 24 hours.

00:44:03 John Daub: So if you're somebody who is good at moderating or if our other moderators nominate you, then you can become a Discord moderator. And we really do need people looking. We're taking an interest and making sure that we keep away as many disruptors to the community and we make sure that the content is good for people that are even younger. Because I know even though we put parental locks on certain things, kids still can manage to get in. And I kind of take that feeling that, yeah, there could be a kid watching this stuff and we don't want to do the wrong thing.

00:44:33 John Daub: Whenever there's a kid at a crosswalk. I sometimes will cross on a red light if there's no car coming. I'm in Hokkaido, population like 10. No cars are coming, but there's a traffic light. But there's a kid on the other side, I won't cross that street because I don't want the kid to learn, oh, but an adult did cross on the red light, so it's okay for me to do it. That's how fine of a line I walk to obey the rules for kids. Kids are on another level. So you have to make sure that it's good.

00:45:08 John Daub: But I expect. You know what they say, when no cops are around, anything is legal. That's not how the real world works, so please don't obey that. So there's, remember, this is all recorded for eternity and perpetuity on the internet now. Cops know where you live. Taken in context, we were laughing. We've got two Nitro Boosts. What does that mean? What do Nitro Boosts do?

00:45:50 John Daub: So if we get more and more Nitro Boosts, the server has more things opened up, like more emoji and even like a dedicated invite URL that's custom. Oh, wow. This is cool. More. Give us another boost. Actually, I might go for that too. Can I boost myself? Go for it. Yeah, it's like eight or no, five US dollars a month. No, I'm wrong. It's 10 US dollars a month. But there's like a $99 for a year thing, right? Yes.

00:46:41 John Daub: So the Gimbals, if I could fix the Gimbal, then I'm getting it with Tyler's Gimbal donation. So then we're good. Because Tyler, I have a backup here. Did you lose another Gimbal? No, I didn't lose it. Actually, I have this one and then this is the one Matsumi gave me. Both of these. This one has been dying sometimes. It's like the hunt for Red October. And then this is the one Matsumi gave me. But this is the one that was failing for some reason. Maybe I should charge it more. I don't know.

00:47:15 John Daub: I think I thought it was charged. But if they do bust it, I'm just going to order another one on Amazon. Either way, we're good. I'm going to try to Nitro Boost myself. We're getting as much boosts going on. We want this to be the most awesome Discord server in the entire universe. We got a lot of catching up to do because a lot of Discord people that have some big Discord servers, right? How many people in Mikey's Discord? I wonder. It's got to be like in the millions.

00:48:00 John Daub: Do we have a number on exactly how many people are in the Discord right now? 430 something. We're going to have more Discord people than I have Twitter followers soon. That's going to be embarrassing. I should use Twitter. I didn't even notice until I see that number. I think if we get to that number, then we might have some more issues. My goal is 100,000 by the end of the year. I have very hefty goals. Busiest one I've seen is a gaming server that's got about 13,000.

00:48:40 John Daub: Wait till this hits the main channel next month. You know, if we do become the biggest Discord server in the world, at least I'll be able to be the hipster who's like, yeah, I was there first. So there you go, everybody. If you're still watching, that means I'm very appreciative of you joining this Discord server and your interest in it. Once again, the link is in the description. All you have to do is click it and download Discord, which is free, and you can now join us in this group and become a member, get notifications faster, see previews, get more information, and you're never really alone anymore.

00:49:31 John Daub: You have a community of people that you see in the live streams quite often that you can talk to, and that's sort of the value of Discord for some people. For me, it's a chance to build a new community, to be closer again, just like I am with you through these videos. I'm a big fan of these live streams, but it's also a way that it's also like a place that's open 24 hours that you can talk with other people, and I think that this is really cool. This is really, really cool because once this live stream goes dark, then the chat finishes, but the chat can continue here.

00:50:06 John Daub: Thanks again. I really don't have too much more to say. I'm going to go over to the general chat, try that out, try to talk. What's that beeping sound? You might need to check your settings to make sure you're not getting the ping for like every single message on the server. Kanae Daub's going to kill me when I try to go to bed and it's going bling bling bling. I'm going to have to throw the phone at Toby (crow). Toby, someone joined us. Somebody clicked as Toby. So Toby's on here? No, that's a fake Toby.

00:50:50 John Daub: Only at mentions. Toby. I'm actually hitting up. Toby, if this is Toby, we're going to have to change it to Toby Official because if you want to be the punching bag of the channel, you're going to have to have a better name than Toby with three Ys. That's how we scream it. Actually, I scream it with Toby. So you probably should have put four Os instead of four Ys, just saying Toby. Toby, by the way, is a nice guy. But the crow is not. Crow Toby's really bad.

00:51:35 John Daub: Bad Penny. So happy you made a Discord. Yeah, actually, we've had it for like a while. It's just going live to everybody. Toby, don't blame me. I'm a nice guy. Well, how dare you pick that name? Name Toby. Unless your mother named that to you and your name is maybe Tobias. Maybe you should use Tobias. The name Toby just makes people feel bad. Toby, remember from The Office as well? That series where Michael Scott would improve our world every time the show was on? I miss that show. Toby was just a punching bag as well in that show.

00:52:21 John Daub: So the name for years has meant like an albatross. It wasn't me that invented Toby. Michael Scott did. Insane. A lot of pending stuff here. This is adding more work for me. There's more pending stuff for me to do. I have like a pending queue of work to do now. It's pending, it says. Oh my word. I have to add people or not add them. I thought I was going to edit today. Katayama, we'll see. I know your editor key.

00:52:57 John Daub: Hey John, can you answer my question? This is from Jeremy. Advice to people who ever send me email. Don't ask me if you can ask me a question. I'm not even going to answer. So if you just write your question, there's a better chance that I'll answer. If you write, hi John, I'm probably not going to answer. So just write the question. Just do it, Jeremy. Write the question. How can I join your Discord live chat? I don't know. Jeremy, can you answer my question? Oh, was that your question? I don't see question mark.

00:53:37 John Daub: That's why I didn't get the question. I don't know, actually. That's something you have to ask the moderators. To join the Discord live chat that we're in right now, we're in the Samurai chat room. So you have to be a Patreon. Yeah, so you have to be a Patreon. Everyone who's starting their Discord server names is picking the name Toby. Oh no, people don't do it. Don't do that. Look, there's two of them, but they spelled it funny because they thought that they could get away. And there's another Toby and they did an IE and then Tubby.

00:54:14 John Daub: Tubby's like a Toby, but not a... that's not that creative. No! I'm getting stressed out. Calm yourself. Throw your stress on a bird and let it fly away. Throw your stress on a bird. Feeling better. This is a Patreon-only chat group and it's so crazy in the Toby... Actually, this is going to be general chat to Toby chat of people who call Toby. Can we do that, Nosh? Can we just take people named Toby and put them in a group like a prison?

00:55:05 John Daub: Nosh, can we take everyone who decides to put their name as Toby and round them up and put them in a Discord prison where they can only talk amongst themselves and every now and then we can poke them? Can I make them jailbirds? Digital birds. And we can throw our things on these birds and they'll fly away in the cell that we created for them. This reminds me of like Serenity Now from Seinfeld. That's a good one. That'll be the name of the group. I'm a visionary. I envision things and we make it happen.

00:55:45 John Daub: So if you do decide that you want to be Toby with an I or you want to be Toby with three Ys or you want to be any Toby whatever, you will be rounded up by our moderators. It stresses me out. There's more Tobys. They're increasing. One, two, three. Don't change your name, Toby. New subscribers don't even know what I'm talking about. We're now at four out of ten Nitro Boost. Four out of ten. Wow. That's actually very cool.

00:56:20 John Daub: I'm going to go this week and talk to the animators. They've finished all of the characters for the anime opening. These are some really good questions I'm getting. It was the animators got some jobs to animate episodes of One Piece and Dragon Ball Z, which is so cool. And they had to put this project to the side because obviously they're not getting paid as much by me as they are from people from Dragon Ball Z and One Piece. This is a really amazing group that are doing the animated opening for Only in Japan. So their priority is to do their real work. And this is real work too.

00:56:59 John Daub: It's a 12 second opening. So hopefully this is finished. They said by September we'll have a new opening to Only in Japan, which is really cool. All right, guys. Thanks. I'm going to be cutting off on the Samurai. I'm going to go one more time in the general voice chat where we're going to see how crazy this is with our Tobes following and then sign off. So thanks, everyone, to the Samurai. Good luck and Godspeed. See you, John.

00:57:36 John Daub: At least on voice. Hey, John, how are you? Yes, I am listening. I'm listening. How are you, everybody? Has it been civil? We're all good. We're doing pretty good. Very civil. Very civil. I'm sorry I started the Toby (crow) thing. You didn't enjoy the Toby (crow) thing. We're all Toby (crow). Yeah, there's a lot of Tobes in here. Too many. It was supposed to be a joke. Yeah. It was supposed to be a joke, but it failed miserably. It's all right. I'm laughing internally.

00:58:13 John Daub: We do have a Toby (crow) emoji. We'll probably need more now. And we're going to put it in a cage, and we're going to put all our problems on it. I'm stuck as Toby (crow). I can't go back to my username. You can change your nickname. I mean, if you're on a computer, just right click and then do change username or change nickname. Actually, though, I'm not seeing it myself, which is... Yeah. I'm on mobile, so I can't... Yeah, it's very bad to stop on mobile. It's a lot of errors. The feedback is killing me. The computer version is more optimal.

00:58:55 John Daub: I believe I made a Toby (crow) video. And for those of you who don't... Good day, guys. Good day. So I made a video showing you where... I might put this on the Discord server because we just nitroed up and the file sizes can be bigger. But I made a video highlighting from the DVD that I did. The feedback is bad. I turned it off, guys, so you don't have any feedback from the residual feedback noise. I want to show you quickly a video that I made. Showing Toby (crow) at his worst. And this is how Toby (crow) the Crow got his name.

00:59:49 John Daub: Toby (crow) Crow. This is when Toby (crow) was founded. Is there audio? I always thought it was like the vacuum cleaner that goes on itself. Hold on a second. This is Toby (crow). That's a Roomba. Oh, I've seen this video. Yeah. This is where I threw... I threw the... Do you see the bird? That's Toby (crow). This isn't the Hitchhike DVD I made. See that poor bear who doesn't get fed very much? That crow is Toby (crow). And look at its head looking back at what I just threw.

01:00:55 John Daub: I didn't get the DVD, by the way. Is it released or anything? Yeah. I just ordered... Actually, I just put in the order. So they should be coming within a couple of weeks. The download DVD has been delivered to the download DVD backers already. Now Toby (crow) the stupid crow. Watch him. He took it. Did you see the bear? How disappointed he is? Watch him put his paw in the air in disappointment right there. Oh. Oh my gosh. Look. Oh, he even looked back and said, nope, the crow got it. He knew what happened. Bears are pretty smart.

01:01:39 John Daub: Awful. That's Toby (crow) to me. And he should be the way like this to you. He's an albatross. Only bad things happen when you see Toby (crow). Oh, I can place a million times in my head. It's actually on a live stream. And yeah, that's him. Toby (crow) the thief. I pointed until he was gone and I unloaded all of them. Yeah, that poor bear. All of them actually in the cement pit. You know, we gave him as much salmon and they're very smart bears actually. Look awful.

01:02:18 John Daub: And then watch it. Look. And then the bird takes off and you can see him. He's like chowing down on the salmon. It's awful. Look at that bird. It's a devil bird. And then there he goes off to the woods with his salmon piece. Awful. Poor bears. So that's the origin of Toby (crow). Toby (crow) as a person, though, first disturbed us a couple of weeks before this when I was hitchhiking to, you can see him on a live stream. He really wanted to see me hitchhiking. He didn't want to see me talking to the camera. He wanted to see me with the sign.

01:02:56 John Daub: Use it. And he kept on saying, stop talking to us and answering questions. Start hitchhiking. You can see it. It's in the live stream. Actually, he started this war. And then I did talk to Toby (crow) at the end of it. And we did make peace. Sort of. Not really. So Toby (crow), if you're watching and he probably has grown up since then, he's older, wiser, and decided not to watch anymore. I appreciate you as a human. But as a crow, you are evil. And we have an emoji here for you just to represent you, a bad crow.

01:03:33 John Daub: Thank you everybody for watching. That's the history behind it. Thank you, Toby (crow). Take that, Toby (crow). Take all our hatred and fly away with it. Kanae Daub, I showed everyone Toby (crow). Thank you, John. Kanae Daub, are you back? Yeah. You are the best. I'm the best. Are you back? Yeah, I'm back. I just introduced everyone to Discord. I might shave as well now. Hi. Yeah. Everyone's saying hello. Yeah, everyone's on the Discord. Hi, Kanae Daub.

01:04:09 Kanae Daub: Hello.

01:04:10 John Daub: You say hello now, yeah.

01:04:12 Kanae Daub: Hello.

01:04:13 John Daub: So pretty. Hello. Hello. Hello. Hello. Hello. She's freaking out, huh? She's freaking out. Hello. It's like a night out. Are you watching? Now you can talk. You have to push... Are you watching? Yes. Somebody answered or she's like, someone just said something and I'm freaking out. What's this? It's hard to like... This is real time. She's freaking out, look. Oh my god. It's crazy. It's very strange hearing my voice on a live stream. It's hard because there's a delay, so... Where? She's freaking out. Whoa. Whoa. Where are you?

01:05:08 John Daub: All the... She's asking where are you. Kanae Daub's going, where are you? Where are you? She's looking, where are you? Kanae Daub's asking where are you? I'm from Colorado, United States. Colorado. Inside the computer. Inside the computer. It's appealing. He's standing on... Oh, okay. I'm from Australia. What the... This is cool. It's Discord. Like Line? Yeah. Yeah, it's one more people talking to him. Yeah. It's cool. Yeah. It's pretty cool. Yeah, it's pretty cool.

01:05:56 John Daub: Alright, guys. Alright, I'm tuning off now. Wow. Alright, cool. Cool. So, thanks for watching. We as the internet world has shocked... We've not just shocked the world... It's okay. We shocked the world, but we shocked Kanae Daub. And that's more... That's actually bigger than shocking the world, because the world's quite used to being shocked. She's not used to being shocked. And we just shocked her. She's gonna be talking about this for like a week. Alright? So, I gotta listen now to the Discord server from her. Like, what was that? For a week. It's gonna be a lot of fun. I like that.

01:06:34 John Daub: Alright. If you have any questions, talk to the mod. Nosh is here. Katayama's here. TSS Killer is in the house, I believe. I shouldn't say his name. Maybe he wants to be incognito. And Purple Bandit and Solairs and UFO Bob and some of the people who are moderating the livestream. So, we'll be able to help you. Leave your questions in the general chat or in the question box. We have categories for everything. And a community is now waiting. We're waiting to work with you.

01:07:05 John Daub: Thanks, everybody. I'll see you on the other side. Thank you, Tyler. We're gonna Nitro Boost this thing up. And enjoy the Discord server, everybody. See you in the next stream tomorrow. Ghost Story. Hopefully. Depends on our main man, PBG. Bye now.
