Summary

We're Leaving Japan but first AIRPORT SHOPPING

Overview

In this emotional yet lively vlog, John Daub and his wife Kanae navigate their departure day at Haneda International Airport in Tokyo. Facing a long 13-hour flight to the United States, the couple decides to make the most of their remaining time in Japan by exploring the airport's extensive shopping and dining options. The video captures the bittersweet feeling of leaving Japan, mixed with the excitement of airport exploration, live stream interactions, and last-minute souvenir hunting.

John and Kanae wander through the terminal's second and fifth floors, investigating unique gifts, food items, and the famous observation deck. They engage with their live stream community, trying out exclusive airport treats like a zunda (sweet edamame) shake and discussing meal upgrades for their flight. Despite the rush to catch their ANA flight, the duo maintains their signature curiosity, highlighting the quality of Haneda's facilities compared to other international airports.

The video serves as both a travel guide for Haneda Airport and a personal send-off. Viewers get practical tips on airport shopping, food recommendations, and the reality of managing time during departure. It showcases the depth of options available at Haneda, from traditional wagashi to modern collaborations like Tokyo Banana Kit Kats, proving that the airport experience is an integral part of the journey itself.

Japan Travel Tips

  • Airport Shopping: Haneda Airport has excellent souvenir shops landside (before security). Once you pass security, options are limited to luxury brands, duty-free liquor, and tobacco. Do your souvenir shopping before checking in or immediately upon arrival at the terminal.
  • Online Check-in: John recommends online check-in to avoid long lines at the counter, saving valuable time before a flight.
  • Meal Upgrades: ANA allows passengers to upgrade their meal plan for a fee (around $20 mentioned), offering a business-class style meal in economy.
  • Timing: Allow extra time for airport exploration. John notes he has missed trains and nearly missed flights due to live streaming and exploring.
  • Exclusive Items: Some food items, like certain boxes of chocolate potato chips or specific manju, are only available at airports or major stations like Tokyo Station.
  • Observation Deck: Haneda has an observation deck that offers great views of the runway and Tokyo skyline (including Skytree). It's worth a visit if you have time before security.
  • Currency: While not explicitly detailed, having cash or a card ready for vending machines and smaller shops is useful.

Japanese Language & Culture Notes

  • Zunda (ずんだ): A sweet paste made from mashed edamame (green soybeans), originating from the Sendai region. Often used in shakes, mochi, or cheesecake.
  • Furoshiki (風呂敷): Traditional Japanese wrapping cloth used to carry goods or wrap gifts. John notes he often forgets about them.
  • Hanjuku Tamago (半熟卵): Soft-boiled egg, often served with tempura or rice bowls. John expresses a particular love for this dish.
  • Ninja Myth: John humorously clarifies to viewers that ninjas do not exist anymore, debunking common tourist misconceptions.
  • Gold Leaf: John points out gold leaf art in the airport, noting that Kanazawa produces 90% of Japan's gold leaf.
  • Omotenashi: The level of detail and service in the airport (beautiful paper brochures, wood flooring) reflects Japanese hospitality.

Food & Drink Guide

  • Zunda Shake 08:09: A sweet shake made from edamame paste. John describes it as creamy, slightly salty, and subdued in sweetness, similar to salty caramel but less sweet. Available at Haneda and Tokyo Station.
  • Tokyo Banana 03:00: Classic airport souvenir. John notes a collaboration with Kit Kat and panda designs available at the airport.
  • Hojicha Manju 03:00: Steamed bun filled with roasted green tea flavor. John is attracted to tea flavors.
  • Chocolate Potato Chips 04:46: Available in full boxes only at airports. Flavors include peach and melon.
  • Itoen Tea 05:40: John's favorite vending machine tea, available in bottled form at the airport.
  • Tempura / Tendon 12:07: John spots a tempura shop and a tendon (tempura rice bowl) place, noting the quality of airport restaurants.
  • Sushi 13:13: Available for breakfast at the airport, though John questions if it's typical to eat sushi so early.

People

  • John Daub: Host and creator of Only in Japan Go. He is tired from editing all night but energetic about exploring the airport. He leads the shopping mission and interacts heavily with the live stream chat.
  • Kanae Daub: John's wife. She accompanies him on the shopping trip, helps select gifts for family, and tries the zunda shake. She appears sleepy but supportive.
  • Dr. Zark: A live stream viewer who interacts via super chats, jokingly credited with "upgrading" their lunch.
  • John's Mom: The recipient of the sought-after "I Love Japan" T-shirt.
  • Peter von Gomm (PVG): John's friend, mentioned in passing regarding imitating his style.
  • Ellis: A viewer or friend mentioned in the chat who knows John's timing well.

Key Takeaways

  • Haneda vs. Narita: John notes Haneda is closer to Tokyo and has great restaurants, but Narita might have better cheap souvenir options landside.
  • Food Quality: Airport restaurants in Haneda are high quality and worth visiting for a last meal in Japan.
  • Time Management: It is easy to lose track of time in Haneda due to the variety of shops and views. Always keep an eye on the clock.
  • Souvenir Strategy: Buy souvenirs before security. Airside shops focus on luxury goods and duty-free items rather than traditional gifts.
  • Community: The live stream community plays a active role in the video, suggesting items and keeping John on schedule.

00:03 John Daub: Welcome to Haneda International Airport in Tokyo. Let the sadness begin because we are leaving Japan. Kanae is so sad. She won't even look in the camera. We don't have makeup on. That's normal for me. We're very, very sleepy. I've been up. I didn't sleep last night at all. In fact, I was editing video and Kanae got a little bit of sleep. Yes, maybe three hours. But before we go, we got to do some shopping.

00:38 John Daub: Haneda International Airport is a pretty neat place. We're going to take you around a little bit. This is outside of the ANA terminal. That's the departures where we're going to go. But first, we're going to go up here and investigate the second floor because when you come to Haneda, this is where you're going to be coming to. Now, Kanae down there. There she is. She's on the prowl to get some gifts.

01:02 John Daub: This is for my mom. What are you going to get my mom? I love Japan T-shirt. Why would she want that? I don't even remember her wearing T-shirts, but she said she wanted it. All right. If she wants it, you got to get it for your mom. I remember when they were renovating this area. It's really beautiful. This is not the first time we've done live streams at Haneda Airport. I do it like every time I come. It's the obligatory I'm leaving Japan live stream, everybody.

01:37 John Daub: Very beautiful up here. All the details are what make this an incredible airport. Little things. It might even compete against Changi Airport. They say Hong Kong airport was pretty good, too. So, Kanae, you have big camera. We don't need anything for mom there. I guess we can go. Oh, well, look at this. Check that little teeny baby Hello Kitty yukata. Wow. Oh, Dr. Zark's in the house. This could be big trouble.

02:13 John Daub: Look at this. It's interesting. That is very interesting. What is it? It's like a dorayaki. Oh, wow. Oh, that's right. We got to get some for Alice. Look at that little kitty stuff. I am digging that you caught that for a dog or is it a cat. No, it's for baby. Yeah. Well, Carl Albert's got some real cool emoji going on there. Very cool, Carl. Thank you. Oh, look, Don Quijote. Check it out. Don Don Donkey. Why is that here? I don't know. It's always you always finding really unusual stuff. Oh, Sora Donkey. Sora means sky. So there's a sky donkey here. That's actually kind of cool.

03:00 John Daub: Is that where we can find the T-shirt, Kanae? What do you think? Oh, my. How you doing? I got to stop. All right. Let's go get some coffee and some food and do some shopping there. Tokyo Bananas representing here. Where should we get some gifts, Kanae? Let's do a quick look through here. What's this? That's a beautiful presentation. What is this? It's a nice manju. What's the flavor? Hojicha? It's a tea. Wow. I'm attracted to anything that has a tea flavor.

03:50 John Daub: Oh, that's cute. This is wagashi candy. Yeah, Japanese candy. It comes wrapped in a furoshiki (traditional wrapping cloth). Why do I always forget furoshiki? Note to. Just note to everybody, there are no ninjas anymore. Okay? Sorry to pop your bubble. They don't exist. Ninjas wouldn't admit it either because they are incognito. Look at that. That's mochi with matcha inside. Does mom want any of this stuff? What do you think? It looks nice. I like the Tokyo Banana Kit Kat collaboration. It's very, very unique.

04:46 John Daub: Oh, do you think we should get the chocolate potato chips? Yeah. Can you fit it in your bag? Your bag's full. I can't fit it in my bag. Are we allowed to have another carry-on? Yeah. Are they going to let us carry it on? It's ANA, so maybe ANA will be more accommodating. They have it inside, don't they? In check-in? All right. Only at the airports can you get boxes of these. Only at the airport. They have the peach and the melon. Full boxes, everybody. Check it out. These are full-on boxes. So I'm going to pass. Very, very tempting. Okay. What have you found?

05:40 John Daub: Itoen. Oh, I love Itoen. That's my favorite tea from the vending machines. Itoen is a good tea. And they have some matcha right here in the airport. Check this out. I'm digging this. Do we have time for this, Kanae? Maybe. It's up to you. Oh, look at this beautiful panoramic shot. All right, everybody. We don't have a lot of time. I upgraded. We made a bid to get premium economy seats. I actually bid quite a high total. And we lost. Somebody bid all the way to the top. It's crazy. So we're sitting in regular economy, which is good. It's fine.

06:30 John Daub: But that means we can spoil ourselves a little bit because we're going to have 13 hours of sitting in economy. I've never sat in a premium economy ever. I've been upgraded to business class before, but I've never sat in premium economy. I thought that would have been cool. But ANA's premium economy is amazing. It's like business class, I've heard. John, are you going to visit Wyoming on your trip? Unfortunately, not this trip. Nissan is representing up here. Hey, Dodi311 for some food. Thank you. We're going to get that. You want to get some tea, Kanae? I'm not in the mood for matcha, but maybe not here. All right, we'll keep looking.

07:25 John Daub: Actually, this thing goes on for a long, long way. Look at this. All right, Kanae, we got to find the t-shirt. Mission on. Let's do this. So we're going to America for about seven to eight days, which is interesting. We gain a day going there and then we lose a day coming back. So we're leaving on the 24th now and we arrive on the 24th in the morning. We lose and gain no time. But coming back, we lose an entire day. We leave on the first, we arrive on the second at night. So yeah, the jet lag is going to be rough. Another reason why I stayed up all night.

08:09 John Daub: Do you see the t-shirts? Oh, no. You see something better. She saw food. Where? No, I haven't. I upgraded the map. She doesn't know. I upgraded it to nothing. Just keep walking. I'm talking to the people. The meal. ANA allows you to upgrade your lunch plan or meal plan. If you pay an extra $20, you get like the business class meal. I upgraded it. I didn't tell her. But she's looking for food. It's not going to compare. Oh, this is beautiful. I'm going through. I'm going this way. What's this? Cheesecake? No, this is zunda. It's edamame. That's edamame cheesecake? I've never seen anything like that before. Oishii. Yeah, zunda is famous at Sendai.

09:23 John Daub: And that's mashed up edamame on top of mochi. This is, I've never. I like this zunda shake. A zunda shake. Should we get a zunda shake? Yeah. Let's try it. Okay. Let's get a zunda shake. Put these super chats to good use. We're getting a zunda shake. Shake, shake, shake. Kanae is really hungry and if she doesn't eat, she's going to complain. So she better get the shake. We don't have a lot of time, which is a shame because we're having way too much fun, aren't we?

10:14 John Daub: As you see, we are up here. We're at the shops and restaurants. I'm glad we did online check-in because we would have been stuck in lines like this. There's probably people watching and you can see your loved ones checking in maybe. Whoa. Dr. Zark just, whoa. Kanae got it. Dr. Zark upgraded our lunch. Zunda shake. Here, open it up. Let's show the guts. Hey, Justin. Thank you. It's made by edamame. I can hardly see it. That's edamame? Yeah. Let's do it. I like it. You can try first. No, no. Ladies first. Drink it and we'll examine your face. Don't worry. I'm not doing it close up. I like it. All right. You're awful at food blogging. Oh, sorry. It's good.

11:23 John Daub: Oh, wow. You like it? Wow. Yeah. There's like a green greenness to it. A slight sweet and a slight bitterness that's pleasing. It's extraordinary. It's creamy. It's slightly salty. It's like salty caramel, but without that super sweet caramel taste, but there's sweetness in it. It's more subdued. Yeah. I heard this shop is only in Haneda Airport and Tokyo Station. Oh, really? You got to come here if you come to Haneda Airport. Good find, Kanae. Or Tokyo Station. Two points for Kanae. I don't have any points yet. I'm going to go to the next one. Dr. Zark has like 20 points.

12:07 John Daub: Oh there's a tendon. Oh mama. Oh baby. Bring on the tempura. Oh my god. Oh my. Is that a hanjuku tamago? Oh, this is my weak spot. When I see this, I melt. If I was two centimeters tall, I would die. I'd jump in and swim in that. Oh, I don't know. All right, get away. Escape. Oh, there's the dashi bar, Kanae. Dashi bar. They have that in Nihonbashi. Yeah. You want a dashi? Oh, there's a burger. Is that a burger? Oh, this is like street food. No way. We're coming back and we're going to do Haneda street food. This is going to be a thing.

13:13 John Daub: Oh, check it out. There's like a sushi shop. Hold on. What's this pink one here? That's unagi. Oh, this is Haneda street food. And then over here we have a sushi shop that no one has. It's like eight in the morning. I don't see anybody getting any sushi yet. Sushi for breakfast? Can you eat sushi for breakfast, Kanae? Yeah, I thought so. Look at this bridge. What? I don't remember this. Can we walk on this? Nanji? Keep your eye on the clock because I've gone on these live streams and almost missed flights because of live streaming. I'm very dangerous. I've missed Shinkansen. Missing a Shinkansen is one thing, missing a flight is something completely different.

14:24 John Daub: All right. So that's looking back at Haneda. Can we, we gotta find the shops. Where are the t-shirts? Oh, we can go up there? Oh, we gotta do it. Let's do it. Do it. Coffee. I had, I will buy coffee if I find coffee, but I had a lot of coffee. We're going back to the United States, the land of K-cups. Oh, we gotta go to the fifth floor? How do we go up this bridge? I don't want to go. Okay. Do we have time? 10 minutes? All right. Let's do this. There's a cafeteria. They just opened. All right. Kanae, let's get in this elevator. Let's do it.

15:16 John Daub: Um, we were gonna, um, I still had five kilograms left in my luggage. I could have bought stuff and packed it, but we decided not to. Bridge, can I do it? Ah, this is awesome. The bridge of Haneda airport. Check this out, everybody. What's the name of this bridge? Nihonbashi? What? That's not Nihonbashi. You want to take a picture? This should be the screenshot, huh? No, I can't do it because I'm live streaming. All right, everybody, you guys take this screenshot here. Okay. Somebody took a screenshot. Send it to me on Instagram. All right, enough looking at me. Look at this bridge instead.

16:31 John Daub: Oh, look at this. This is beautiful. It's got this wonderful art on the wall on the left side here made of gold leaf, probably from Kanazawa since Kanazawa makes 90% of the gold leaf in Japan. I, no, because I was just there. Now, no YouTuber is going to show you the wood floor, only in a live stream. What'd I show you? Wow. It's real wood. It's not the imported kind. I doubt it though. Am I in your Instagram? Good. I was in Eric surf six Instagram. That was pretty cool. I never get on. I don't get into a lot of people's Instagrams.

17:40 John Daub: What's this? Oh, there's a brochure on this. Look at this. That brochure probably cost a dollar to make. That's really nice paper. Popular recommended sites. Select stores line with townscape from the Edo period. All right. Enough of that. Just reading that and trying to imitate Peter. We lost about 20 viewers. Do not try this at home. PVG is probably laughing. Hoshii? Iranai? Okay. She's going to keep it. I can buy you something like that. To Papa. Okay. Why are there no shops with t-shirts? Can I, we're still looking for the I love Japan t-shirt. Where is this? Can I, I know Ronald. We're looking for it. I don't know.

18:36 John Daub: This is beautiful. Oh, we can go to the observation deck. Can we go? Can I? It's to the left. Wow. It's beautiful. Look, it's like almost like a festival. Look at this. All right, let's go. Oh, it's a little bit. Let's go. We got like five minutes. All right, let's go to the observation deck. We're totally going to miss this flight. If we miss it, we can jump on one of these micro flights and then I can jump into a congealed hanjuku tamago. Hey, there's our flight. Can I? Our flight's right here. Oh my. That's not it. We got it. We don't have a lot of time.

19:33 John Daub: Wait, what? You mean, are you trying to say that somebody's going to be there? Somebody tried to fly a drone. Somebody tried to fly drones from the airport. I don't know. No drone on the drone. That's insane. Who's dumb enough to do that? Oh, let's go here, fly a drone and we can be an airplane. This is where Renz and I, um, he had all of the passes like about six months ago. So this is Haneda airport international. Look at all those ANA flights. We might be on one of them. Really? Hey, Ellis is here. We're looking for dorayaki stuff right now. Look, it's Ellis. Ellis can see us. We can't see Ellis. See you soon. Yeah. It means you won't be late. Yeah. Ellis knows me well.

20:37 John Daub: All right. We better go. Where are the t-shirts? All right. This is nice. Our last sun for the next 13 hours. I do like the sun. I like Haneda because it's so close. There's the city of Tokyo. You get really nice view. The Skytree, um, a little bit on your right. Sorry. All right. Time to get out of here. Now I'm starting to get nervous. Now I'm getting nervous. It's exciting. You don't want to be on time for your flight. You want to be just boarding. Just like as soon as they close, right before they close the gate, that's when you hit, you say we're here. And you run. That's fun. And if you miss it, you know what?

21:32 John Daub: No, the inside, once you go through security, all they have are like brand shops, cologne, perfume, tobacco, booze. They don't have the shops here. I'm really surprised that Haneda airport is lacking in the cheap tourist goodies. Narita does. Haneda is kind of lacking. All right. Can I, how do we get out of here now? This is a pain in the neck. Oh. Vending machine. All right. We're going to use the elevator. Quick. Like a light bulb. Do it. I'm really worried. That's, I was, I'm kind of curious about that vending machine. What's in there? Hey, David. Nice to see you in here. Thank you. I wonder how can I, ah, did it come? Ronald plane. Everybody has my best interests in mind. This is why I love our community. Everyone's saying get on the plane. Don't miss your flight. What are you doing? Stop live streaming. I'm addicted.

22:50 John Daub: You like honey? I don't know. Yeah. I'm just curious. It's fun. When I feel like I'm carrying the baton, the stick that I'm holding in my hands right now. It has power. Right now there's 800 of you inside of this stick. It's pretty cool. You are the eyes. I'm just kind of disappointed. We found the restaurants. We didn't really find the shops. Yeah, we didn't find the shops. Good morning. Thank you very much. Should we bail? Isn't that coming? We bail? Okay. Never panic. This is my lessons from scuba diving. Remember? We're not scuba diving though. When you're scuba diving, never panic. Always relax. It's a full elevator. Always relax. Panicking just makes things worse. We're going down. Yes. The door is closing. Please be careful. The slowest elevator ever. We're going down.

24:29 John Daub: Kanae, you need a book? So we've come this way already. Shall we do one loop inside? Yeah. Oh, look. Pandas. That's a Tokyo banana panda. Banana yogurt flavor. Banana yogurt? Pass. You pass? I pass. I don't think mom's going to get her t-shirt, Kanae. I think she's going to have to settle with the Tokyo 2020 Olympic t-shirts that I bought. Oh, I love this street. Look at this. Oh, they have it in Roppongi. It's a udon shop, right? Yeah. That's a nice shop. The restaurants in Haneda are really good. It's worth, if you want to get a last meal or you want to hold off at lunch and you want to eat your meal at the airport, it's actually really good place to do that. There's all sorts of choices here. We even have kushikatsu. Check that out. We have kushikatsu here. What? That's awesome.

25:44 John Daub: All right. Kanae has found goodies. No? Nothing? Oh, there's some of the Olympic stuff. Does anybody know the Paralympics mascot's name? Does anybody know? Two points if you know. You have five seconds. What is the Paralympics mascot's name? Anybody? Nobody knows. Oh, Tokyo, you have a lot of work to do. We don't have time for sukiyaki. Just to order it would take 10 minutes, I think. That looks so good. Sukiyaki. Yeah. You know what? We'll just come on a date to Haneda and not even fly anywhere. We'll just come here to eat. What is this? Oh, it's a Pokemon vending machine. Yeah. Didn't you dance on this stage before? When they first renovated this area and we took a picture here like five years ago. You remember? Yeah.

27:09 John Daub: Hey, do you think should we get my dad a firefighter t-shirt? That's pretty cool. That's a pretty cool t-shirt. I would wear that. I would. Firefighter. Fire. Kunai, do you know Beavis and Butthead? I don't know. I just don't. These are cute. I like the patterns. Oh, it's Miyajima deer. Check this out. The ninjas are overrated. All right, Kanae. Kanae, we got to move. We got to move. Sorry. Mom, this is proof we checked. This is proof. We actually checked for this. We checked for the t-shirts. We went around for 30 minutes. Proof. Done. All right, Mom? There you go. We worked. We tried and we didn't find it.

28:19 John Daub: And Dr. Zark's t-shirt money. Dr. Zark, we're going to have to get her like a Gucci t-shirt now because that's all they got inside. That's all. They have Gucci. So we're going to get Mom one of these and we're going to call it the Dr. Zark t-shirt. She's going to like that. They don't have any nice. That's like We Are Penn State. They ripped it off from Penn State. Yeah. So everybody who went to Penn State, We Are Tokyo, trademark infringement maybe. Go ahead. Let's see, Kanae. Maybe. No, do it. Do it. Rock, scissors, paper, go. I didn't even have to do it. She just wanted to do it. Get out of here.

29:13 John Daub: All right. I'm a Buckeye. I've been to Penn State College. I've been to Penn State many times to watch football games. And just visit friends, though. Buckeye. Go Bucs. If you're from that school up north, that's one school I won't mention. Some of you know what I'm talking about. All right. Where's the. How do we get out of here? All right, everybody. This is where we started. Except it's business class. All right. So, there you go. Kanae and I are leaving Japan for one week and we'll be back to bring more. But don't worry we've got a lot of things to show you in America so the live streams will continue.
