Tokyo's Super Robot Town Experience Odaiba

Overview

In this live stream style video, John Daub explores Odaiba, Tokyo's futuristic artificial island in Tokyo Bay, dubbing it "Robot Town." The journey begins at Aqua City Odaiba, where John introduces viewers to Chihira Junko, a humanoid robot guide who has been stationed at the mall for several years. He observes her interactions, appearance, and technology, noting both her Politeness and signs of age.

John then takes viewers on a walk through the mall and across the highway to DiverCity Tokyo Plaza to see the main attraction: the life-size Unicorn Gundam statue. Along the way, he points out iconic Odaiba landmarks like the Fuji TV Building, the Odaiba Statue of Liberty, and the Rainbow Bridge. Upon reaching Gundam, John examines the massive mobile suit, discusses the cultural difference between Japan's positive view of robots versus America's fearful depiction, and visits the Gundam Cafe.

The video serves as both a travel guide to Odaiba's robotic attractions and a cultural commentary on Japan's relationship with technology. John provides practical tips for visitors, including best viewing times for the Gundam show, nearby amenities, and the history of the island itself.

Japan Travel Tips

  • Getting There: Odaiba is accessible via the Yurikamome line or buses. John walks from Aqua City to DiverCity across the Wangan Expressway overpass.
  • Best Time to Visit: John notes it is nice at night for views of Tokyo Tower and Rainbow Bridge, but the Gundam show runs during the day (e.g., 12:00 PM).
  • Rainbow Bridge: You can walk across the Rainbow Bridge for free, but check closing times (around 5:30 PM or 6:30 PM depending on season).
  • Gundam Show: The Unicorn Gundam transforms/moves at specific times (e.g., 12:00 PM). Arrive early to secure a spot.
  • Shopping: John notes that most malls (Aqua City, DiverCity, Aeon) have similar shops and prices; online shopping is often comparable.
  • Nearby Attractions: Oedo Onsen Monogatari (hot spring theme park) is nearby within the 23 wards.
  • Cost: Viewing the Gundam statue is free. Food at Gundam Cafe starts around 648 yen for coffee.

Japanese Language & Culture Notes

  • Odaiba (お台場): A large artificial island in Tokyo Bay, originally built for defense, now a commercial and entertainment district.
  • Onsen (温泉): Japanese hot spring. John mentions Oedo Onsen as a famous spot in Tokyo.
  • Robot Culture: John highlights a key cultural difference: In Japan, robots are often seen as friends or saviors (e.g., Gundam, Astro Boy), whereas in American culture (e.g., Terminator), they are often depicted as threats.
  • Metric System: Japan uses the metric system. John jokes about Gundam being "international" because of this, unlike the US imperial system.
  • Gachapon (ガチャポン): Capsule toy vending machines. John points out Gundam gachapon at the trailer shop.
  • Mobile Suit: The term for the piloted robots in the Gundam franchise.

Food & Drink Guide

  • Watermelon & Japanese Pears: Chihira Junko states these are her favorite fruits 04:00.
  • Gundam Cafe Coffee/Tea: Available at the Gundam Cafe. Coffee comes with character patterns from the manga/movie 20:38.
  • Ice Cream Parfait: Featured on the Gundam Cafe menu outside.
  • Shot Glass Drink: Available for adults at the cafe.
  • Price: Coffee mentioned at 648 yen.

People

  • John Daub: Host and narrator. He guides the viewer through Odaiba, providing commentary on robots and culture.
  • Chihira Junko: A humanoid robot guide located at Aqua City. She interacts with visitors and speaks English and Japanese.
  • Jacob: A subscriber/viewer mentioned by John at the beginning.
  • Joe: A friend John mentions meeting later for a shoot.

Key Takeaways

  • Odaiba is a hub for robot technology and anime culture in Tokyo, featuring both humanoid assistants and massive anime statues.

00:03 John Daub: What a beautiful day in the city of Tokyo. The sun is shining, the sky is blue, Tokyo Bay is glistening in that beautiful sunshine. There in the distance goes the boat towards Asakusa, the historical heart of Tokyo. And I'm here in Odaiba because this, believe it or not, is actually what I like to consider Robot Town.

00:20 John Daub: It's a place where you're going to see a couple of really amazing robots. One of them is right inside this shopping mall. Hey Jacob, this is a live stream. This is what you subscribe for. So don't forget to subscribe. Let's go inside and check out Chihira Junko. Junko is a humanoid robot who is a guide, kind of like an assistant. She's been here for about five or six years. This is inside of Aqua City in Odaiba. Aqua City is one of the big shopping malls.

01:18 John Daub: They moved Junko to the corner over here. As you can see, personal assistants are very useful here. And there she is. There's already some people saying hi. Hey Junko. Check it out. That's Junko. She was on the other side of the shopping mall, but they put her over here. How cool is that? Every now and then you'll see some facial movements that might freak you out. Oh, little wincing of the eyes. Does she blink? She's just looking right at you, into your soul. It's really well done. Very polite, but she's starting to show her age.

02:21 John Daub: Here's her information tag here. I think it's Chihira Junko. She was born in June, so that's why her name is Junko. She was born on June 1st. She has a birth date. She's 165 centimeters tall. I guess that puts her like five foot seven. Average. She's average in everything. Like a profile photo. And she's part of the staff here. You can kind of interact with her, but I have not seen that happen. Anyways, it's a pretty neat little chance to take a look at some of the technology that Japan has. Junko is one of the first. Thank you, Junko. I know she talks. I've heard her talk. She's just a little shy today.

03:23 John Daub: Just as I was coming here, I took video of robots in the construction field. Check this out here. Do you see that? No, we don't have enough workers in Japan to do some of this. And it doesn't take a brain surgeon to wave a stick. So the more I'm driving on the highways, the more and more you're going to see robots doing construction work, like signaling people.

04:00 John Daub: Oh, she spoke. "I especially like watermelons and Japanese pears." Tell us more, Junko. She can speak English. Did you hear that? She likes watermelons and pears. There's her favorite fruits right there. We've got the boys over here. We're controlling her panel. But you need the application software in order to talk to her. So you just push stuff. She's an Android. "I'm an Android. My name is Junko. Please call this tour guide, Magatroid and Tokyo." You can ask questions on the display over here.

04:47 John Daub: Anyways, Junko is not the only robot in town. Oh, no. Alright, you guys ready? We're gonna go now. Oh, there's the Tokyo Olympic mascots. We're gonna cut through the shopping mall super fast. If the signal goes dead, I apologize. We've got a five-minute walk to get to a place called DiverCity. DiverCity, in the front of it, has Gundam. And if you know anything about anything, Gundam's pretty big here. So big, he towers over the little people. I'm not just talking in popularity, I'm talking in size. So we're gonna make a little walk over to Gundam on a beautiful day.

08:50 John Daub: Alright, out we go. Into the chilly, late November weather. Which is surprisingly sunny. And welcome. This is Odaiba. And you can see over there in the distance, they have their own Statue of Liberty. This is a place of freedom. Everybody, you know that. You've been to Odaiba before, because we all have. From here, it's really nice at night. There's a Statue of Liberty right in front of you. But you have Tokyo Tower and the Rainbow Bridge. You can walk across that bridge for free. You start on the Tokyo side, the other side of the bay. There's stairways, but they do close, I think, around 5:30 or 6:30, depending on the time of the year. So you might want to check that out. Rainbow Bridge Crossing.

09:53 John Daub: That right up there is a building of the future. That is the Fuji TV building. That big globe in the center is... You can't miss it from the other side of the bay. And it's even more impressive. Futuristic looking square. Could be made out of Legos. Straight ahead, if you were to go, you would get to Oedo Onsen. Oedo Onsen is one of the most famous onsens (hot springs) in the city of Tokyo. You don't have to leave the 23 wards to get there. There you go. There's the Fuji TV Tower. I did a TV show in the basement of this building. Some really big studios in there. This walkway... When they built DiverCity, which is this shopping mall right here. And you'll see the Gundam on the other side. This walkway just connected the whole area of this part of the city of Odaiba. It's really nice.

11:00 John Daub: I'm only going to do this live stream until we get to the Gundam. Okay. I think we got a lot of fans going to be watching this. You might want to share this video. Because we will be there in about 3 minutes. Do not time me. I'm always a little bit late. DiverCity. Tokyo is just full of shopping malls. There's too many almost. So all of the older ones from the 1990s, they're kind of showing their age now. They're getting renovated. The Aeon malls are starting to feel a little bit old. And places like DiverCity which have been around for 4 or 5 years have a little bit more momentum. But they have the same shops. Very rarely do they have special deals or something like that. So it doesn't really make any sense to shop at any one particular place. Although each of these shopping malls, in other countries, have their own credit cards and loyalty cards. But to be honest with you, I just shop online.

12:14 John Daub: We're moments away from reaching Gundam. A very unique robot controlled by humans inside. To be honest with you, I don't know much about Gundam. But what I do know is that Gundam has its own cafe. Gundam is pretty darn cool. So, are we going to the shopping mall? No, we will not. But what we will be doing is showing you this map and then making our way around to the other side. So just to give you an overview, we started here on this side of the Aqua City Odaiba. Here's Junko right here. And then we walked through the shopping mall real fast and we've come down here. And we're now over the highway, the Expressway Wangan (Bay Shore), which goes to Haneda Airport this way. There's some really nice parks in this area. You can barbecue here for a little bit of money. But we're going to be going right here. And you know what's on this side, don't you? Gundam!

13:27 John Daub: Wow, look at this crowd of people. What are they doing? What's this crowd for? They look like they're zombies just standing there looking at their smartphones. It's kind of creepy. Check it out. They're not moving. They're just standing there, sometimes by themselves. They're not even turning to talk to their friends. This is for some sort of event. It's called the In Colors World. There's always something interesting going on. But wait, wait. Alright. Hit the like button for what you're about to see right now. Because it just is out of this world. Like literally, it does not seem like it's in this world. I'm going to turn the camera around. Click the like button for Gundam.

14:39 John Daub: It is a pretty amazing sight to turn the corner. And there is this massive... Some people say that it's real. But if it was ever dragged into some sort of war, we would activate this mobile suit Gundam. All I know is that some people, mostly under the age of 13, have told me that if in case of an attack or war, we will activate this mobile suit Gundam. And there are artillery and armor. And with this new super wide, it looks pretty cool. At 12 o'clock, they put on a show. I think we just missed it. Yeah, I guess we just missed it. I'm sorry guys. But it's pretty massive. We're going to get a closer look at it from different angles. It's 12:40 p.m. in Tokyo, so we missed the show. But this is another reason why Odaiba is Robot City. It just got a lot of robots because they want to give the perception that they are the future. And it kind of is. This island is new. It's made on trash. A collection of garbage over the course of decades.

16:10 John Daub: Mobile Suit Gundam is... I think inside there's also a museum. But more importantly, besides the show, for many people, there's this. The Gundam Cafe. Which means there's a cafe, a place where you can get food and coffee and celebrate your love for Gundam. Yeah. I don't know if you can go inside, but what I'm going to do is get a little bit closer to this. And then you on the other side, although you can't make it to Japan, can feel what it's like to be so close to Mobile Suit Gundam. Like a real one. And the details on this are incredible. Look at this. They have warnings. Hidden structural bolts. See maintenance manual. The little teeny things on this make it so interesting for kids and me, an adult. I'm telling you, this thing can go active. The details on it are incredible. At night they do illuminate it, which makes it look massive. And sometimes you'll see pictures on social media of them trucking this thing in on a tractor trailer through the city. And it makes people stop in their tracks and just take pictures and look in awe.

17:50 John Daub: He does move. This Mobile Suit does move. Not a lot. It won't show you all the goods. We don't want people to know exactly all the powers that Gundam has. You have to watch the show for that. But there's a rocket pack on the back. And we'll do a 360 here. Livestream so you don't have to cut anything. It is what it is. But this is a big, big contrast to Junko on the other side, isn't it? There's some more warning labels here. So, warning. I can't read it. Maintenance manual again. What do you guys think? Is this one of Tokyo's big attractions, do you think? Literally, it's big. You know, there's Godzilla in Shinjuku and one of the hotels. But is this worth coming to Tokyo for? To see this Gundam Mobile Suit in action? I don't think they have another country that has anything like this. Just Tokyo. And that's its love for robots.

19:04 John Daub: Japan has always had a love affair with robots. Robots are positive things. They are things that save the world. Our friends are robots. And in America, we have the Terminator and the Skynet. And robots are the ones that destroy the world. It's humans who save it. Gundam has been around since 1979. I'm older than Gundam. That's sad. But true. That's what you guys see if you do come here. This will change too. And I believe he was under construction or renovation. They had some kind of secret tarp around him. I'm going to give you a quick look at the Gundam. One last look from this angle. I'm going to give you a quick look at the Gundam Cafe. Just so you can see for a lot of the fans that might be watching this. You can check out some Gundam love here. With food. And there is a Gundam trailer shop. They call it a trailer shop. So you can find some goods here. There is Gachapon (capsule toy vending machine) with Gundam. Some miniature ones. You can see the real thing and take one home in your pocket. Smart. Businessman smart.

20:38 John Daub: Let's take a look here really quickly at Gundam Cafe. Hey Hot Moon. "Hi there. Have a coffee or tea with me." You got it. I'm going to get a bite to eat. I don't know if I'll get it here. Because I don't have permission to film inside the shop. But I will give you a quick look. This is the Gundam Cafe. There is a Gundam mobile suit. And the menu is right here outside. They have some nice looking ice cream parfait. Some cups. Some coffee. If you get a coffee, they will give you the pattern of some of the characters from the manga from the movie. For 648 yen. And you can get a shot glass. So it's for adults. For sure. These are the real deal. And you can see in here just some of the goods that they have inside here. Just for a second. There's even Gundam umbrellas. It's pretty cool. Beam saber. I don't really know much about this here. So there you go.

22:09 John Daub: So there you go everybody. Gundam is the robot town. And there's proof. I don't know how tall. It's gotta be like 1000 feet tall. Because I have no sense of feet anymore. I'm in the metric system. For better or for worse. One meter is like 2.10 feet or something. I don't know. It's not quite 3 feet. A yard is 3 feet. I don't know. Gundam, by the way, uses the metric system. He's international. Gundam's biggest problem would be if he fought with America. Because America's system is all in feet and yards. And he maybe cannot compute. Therefore, America might win. The battle with Gundam. We also have our own robots in America. They're just kept hidden in a bunker in Nevada. I heard. For when they really need them. I'm having fun with you.

23:11 John Daub: Definitely subscribe if you like the live streams. We have some more stuff coming. I might be doing a midnight snack from either today or tomorrow. I'm going now to meet my friend Joe. Who's going to rent a family. And I helped set up a shoot for him. Helping some YouTubers that are here in Japan. If you do like this content, leave me a comment. What do you think? Are robots taking over the world? And is it worth coming to Japan to see robots? And visit Robot Town Odaiba. Which is what I like to call it. There's even more robots. There's a Toyota showroom where you can ride cars around inside the office there. So there's a lot of stuff that you can do. Thanks everybody for watching. I will see you in another live stream. But... There'll be no robots in it. This is your last chance to robot. So suck it up for the next 20 seconds. Gundam is all yours. That could be you riding inside that head. Controlling one of these robots. Taking them into battle. Just make sure you drink a coffee and stay caffeinated. Because you're gonna need a lot of energy. There's no restrooms in there too. So maybe make it an espresso. Bye everybody.
