Tokyo's Narita Airport Deserted Departures Walk Through
Tokyo's Narita Airport Deserted Departures Walk Through
Overview
In this poignant June 2020 livestream, John Daub takes viewers on a walk through Narita International Airport's Terminal 1 departures area during the early stages of the global pandemic. With international travel halted and Japan just emerging from its state of emergency, the usually bustling airport is eerily deserted. John and his wife Kanae explore the empty halls, noting the high staff-to-passenger ratio and the few shops that remain open, such as Muji and McDonald's.
The video captures a unique historical moment where tourism has vanished, leaving behind quiet corridors and closed attractions like the observation deck. Despite the somber atmosphere, John finds moments of levity, purchasing a traffic light gachapon (capsule toy) and interacting with livestream viewers. He also announces a charity initiative, donating the month's membership revenue to support those hurt by the pandemic. The walk concludes with a drive back to Tokyo, reflecting on the strange new reality of travel and life in Japan.

Japan Travel Tips
- Airport Status: During the pandemic (June 2020), many shops and facilities like observation decks were closed. Check current status before visiting.
- Mask Etiquette: Masks were required in public areas even after the state of emergency ended. Politeness and wearing masks were emphasized.
- Food Ordering: At airport food courts, you can often point to plastic food models or numbered menus if you don't speak Japanese.
- Gachapon: Capsule toy machines can be found in unexpected places like airport terminals, often on upper levels.
- Transport: Driving from central Tokyo to Narita took about an hour with no traffic due to lack of travelers.
Japanese Language & Culture Notes
- Gachapon (ガチャポン): Capsule toy vending machines. John finds a traffic light toy here.
- Shingo ku (信号機): Traffic light. The specific gachapon item purchased.
- Abe no mask (アベノマスク): Refers to the government-issued cloth masks distributed during the pandemic. John wears one ironically.
- Gaijin (外人): Term for foreigner. John discusses being called this in Kichijoji, noting it can feel like a slap in the face depending on context.
- Omotenashi: The high staff-to-passenger ratio (5 staff to 1 passenger) highlighted the dedication to service even without customers.
Food & Drink Guide
- Sushi & Tempura: Available at the food court. John notes a deal for around $15 USD before a flight. 07:01:00
- Tokyo Bananas: Not available due to expiration dates and low sales during the pandemic. 00:06:00
- Soba (Buckwheat Noodles): Seen alongside sushi options in the food court. 07:01:00
People
- John Daub: Host. American living in Japan for 30+ years. Warm, curious style. Guides the tour and interacts with viewers.
- Kanae Daub: John's wife. Joins the walk, comments on food and shops, and participates in the gachapon purchase.
- Peter von Gomm: Mentioned as a friend who was dropped off at the airport and will narrate an animation.
- Toby (crow): Not present in this video, but a recurring character in John's content (none spotted here).

00:06:00 John Daub: Welcome to Narita Airport. Hey Jennifer, French Javier, it's like the Tom Hanks movie when he's at the airport. We just watched it the other day, yeah, The Terminal. I didn't see any Tokyo Bananas there. I think because the expiration date is usually about two weeks and they're just not selling enough to even make it profitable to start the factory going right now. We're in Terminal 1 store area and we wanted to show you a little bit of the airport just maybe even for historical purposes. Sushi restaurants open, yeah it is. There's somebody inside, the chef. Look at the chef. You should go in there, have some sushi. No customers, it's really eerie.
06:10:00 John Daub: I think we can take you upstairs to the observation deck here. Super welcome to the memberships here, Insider, thank you. We're thinking, I'm thinking about doing a livestream tonight where I'm driving around Tokyo when I go to return the car. Yesterday a couple weeks ago I had to do that in the morning, so I might take you at night. It's so refreshing to be out even though we're the only ones here, out and looking at things like this. This is so associated with travel that we haven't been able to do for such a long time. Japan is out of the state of emergency and the alert for Tokyo is over, so we can travel a little bit more freely but we do have to take precautions in public areas and be polite and wear a mask for everybody.
07:01:00 Kanae Daub: This is an amazing amount of food, isn't it?
07:01:00 John Daub: Thank you Daniel. Well go get that sushi with the soba. Basically for travelers that don't know Japanese food, you can just point and pick what you want. These all these dishes you can see that has a number on it so you can just say the number, one seventy plus seven please or what's the sushi number, that one sold out, it's one nineteen please. Yeah that's a pretty good deal, fifteen bucks for sushi tempura before you get on the flight. Whoa, it's just a real, look look at it, look at it, canceled. Look at that, yeah bored. It's crazy. I don't know the other sides, it's all red. So quiet.
08:00:00 John Daub: Can I, I don't know, I can't, I usually I'm screaming at the camera, I can't do that today. Oh uni closed, closed, uni closed, closed. No looting here. Hey Ben Featherstone writes in here, live streams for life, thanks John, love these streams. Thank you so much Ben from the UK, awesome. Uh Muji (Mujirushi Ryohin, no-brand goods store) is open, Mujirushi to go. Our friend who was traveling almost needed another bag, another suitcase and Mujirushi would have been the place to go. They have suitcases in there, there's nobody. Can you want to do some shopping, you'll be the only one. Yeah look it's summer here in Japan and none of the tourists. This is a zombi. Yeah we're not gonna have any international tourists really enjoying the summer in Japan. It's so sad in a way walking through here with you. It's kind of sad. McDonald's is open but that's it.
09:24:00 John Daub: Let's see if we can go upstairs. I'm pretty sure there's an observation deck if we go up. Let's do it. Cryo Flames wish you my friend Ezak a happy early birthday, that's a tongue twister. Hey Ezak, happy early birthday, you didn't have to say it too, that's cute that you did. Thanks so much for that, I appreciate it. Okay here we go, we're gonna go, I'm gonna take you outside to the observation deck and take a look. There you see there is a Lawson's. They do have these plastic guards to protect people from getting sick and trying to reduce the amount of contact with people so it does work in reducing the amount of people getting anything. We're here for you so don't come to the airport, we're just doing a quick look-see before we go back home.
11:17:00 John Daub: I think it should be two to three meters, why not, why one to two, maybe just say best effort then. But this food court is closed. No, it's got to be on the side. I think if we go to the side here we're going to the observation deck to go outside. Hey everybody, okay it's closed, you mean the whole thing is closed? I know Shane, absolutely, I'm shocked. That's it, so the observation deck is closed guys, we can't even see the observation deck. It's closed now but so it's not going to be open until the end of the week for any of us. So if we could just do a quick look at the instead of he's allowed us to just take some shots without, we've got to go really quick and have a look for any more things to do.
13:03:00 John Daub: There's almost no passengers. I think in terms of staff, we saw it's about five to one staff to passenger ratio. It's usually the other way. I don't have to wear it if there's nobody around. It's usually the other way where it's five passengers to every staff member or so. But it's like five to one the opposite way and that's so surreal. It's just really really. This is my government issued mask, Ando-san. I'm trying to support the government. It's hard to support the government. That is the Abe no mask. Nobody's wearing them so I thought I should. Nick Anthony, keep making videos, I love them. Thank you Nick.
13:44:00 Kanae Daub: Look at that. We have some gachapon (capsule toy vending machines). Who wants in on gachapon? Anybody want one?
13:44:00 John Daub: Kanai, you see some? So it's interesting here to note that the gachapon is on the top level of the airport.
13:52:00 Kanae Daub: Anything that you see here?
14:00:00 John Daub: I found the Star Wars.
14:02:00 Kanae Daub: Star Wars? And Doraemon.
14:07:00 John Daub: Doraemon gone wild. I think they tried. Sometimes Japan tries too hard. They think they put in stuff that foreign tourists would like, so they put in different kinds of things that not Japanese would like but foreign tourists like. But actually the other way around. We want the stuff that's so bizarre and cool like the Friday the 13th keychain masks. I guess Jason Voorhees had different kinds of masks. This is a red and a blue mask, different triangles. And that might be Jason Voorhees, he's Final Mask. I don't know, that's pretty creepy actually.
14:51:00 Kanae Daub: What? Oh that's so cool. I want to get one of these.
14:58:00 John Daub: All right. Shall we try this one? Shall we get this? We can try here, 300 yen. Should we go for it? What do you think?
15:10:00 John Daub: Cindy Yu, unfortunate we don't get there until April. Let's try for November. Thanks so much for being informative and entertaining these past three months. Thank you so much Cindy Yu from Canada.
15:21:00 Kanae Daub: Can we get one of these?
15:21:00 John Daub: So many of my friends, and by the way my friend just took an Air Canada flight. People were so nice, he had seven attendants helping him with his luggage. Seven. They didn't know what to do, the lovely ladies at the check-in. They are Star Alliance I think because Air Canada is part of that. Yeah we're going to get a Japanese traffic signal, shingo ku (traffic light), right? No Fate 18. Hi I'm John Kanai watching from Orlando Florida. I'm going to travel to Japan. Well right now you can't but we're going to do it for you.
15:59:00 Kanae Daub: Got your phone. Don't require any electronics. Can I get alcohol?
16:03:00 John Daub: Oh my gosh. I don't want to touch it. I tried it in Akihabara and it was weird. Oh there's sticky, why is it sticky? Oh cool, it's a traffic light. Of course it is. All right, wipe it down with alcohol.
16:46:00 Kanae Daub: Really? Yeah I can show. Oh no, I just show. Oh no here, you can do it.
16:59:00 John Daub: Whoa. I think you can leave these here to recycle.
17:07:00 Kanae Daub: Oh okay.
17:10:00 John Daub: All right, I'll throw it away in a second. So they have all these different kinds of, look at this, different kinds of traffic signals and we got. Oh this is so cool. Does it turn on? Oh can I? This turns on. Oh it's on, this is cool. This is the coolest thing I've ever seen. Ah wait, how do I change it? That's off on. How does it go? I guess I think this is only for blue. Oh really? Blue light yes. Oh okay, you got to get both of them. You got it. All right you know what, it's still pretty cool. Yeah that was $3, you can put on your bag. Is that better than the fish ring I gave you? I gave her a tin of yakitori as a ring, she wasn't impressed by it.
18:27:00 John Daub: Hey Kelly Trujillo is here. Hey. But I think they don't, they recycle them? You throw them away? Really? I guess she knows best. Best $3 spent today yeah absolutely. Arliss123, hi John. I love the channel, keep up the good work. Hey guys we have a, I have a big announcement coming next week so I'm really excited about it. I think you're going to, it's going to be some good news that you're going to love. So yeah next week is a big week for me and for this series. So very very excited.
19:18:00 John Daub: I guess the best that we can do with showing you the airplanes from here is to show you from this window and there's no airplanes. I can't believe they closed the lounge. What? They're making us suffer. I love airplanes. All you see are the tails and they're all like FedEx. FedEx is doing a killer business right now. It's interesting so I rented a car to take my friend. It took about an hour, a little bit less than an hour to drive here from the city. I was impressed at the fact that nobody's coming to Narita, there was no traffic at all. Hey Gian welcome, it's great. We got a lot of new members and that really helps the channel.
20:26:00 John Daub: And I'm going to be cutting my hair probably tomorrow night or the next night, sometime this weekend. Not all of it but a great, she's going to get the clippers out and haircut it. And all of the membership number money for this month we're going to be giving to charity because I think a lot of people in our community are hurting really badly and they could use some help. So we have a couple that we have in mind. So if you do become a member we're going to be giving the entire month of June to one of the charities. It's going to be a nice donation from our community to one of those charities and I'll let you know what it is soon. Second Harvest is a really good one, a food bank, and through the pandemic they've been still feeding the homeless and still feeding people who needed to be fed. They really need volunteers but I think we might be able to do that too.
21:40:00 John Daub: This is the check-in one more time before we leave. Let's walk through the middle of it. We're going to take you there one last time just to see what it's like during this pandemic. Here's a media release from Etihad and the UAE is closed. That's tough, it's all regarding the COVID-19 travel. Alitalia as well if you need Alitalia, no flights to Italy. It really is heartbreaking. I'm going to show you a little bit of this wing. There's a Tully's Coffee stand but you can see there's not a soul here. And then we're going to take you to the car again before we get in and go back to Tokyo. And this is sad to see too, that's the Tokyo Olympics animation playing in the background. So all these international tourists that are supposed to be here are you supposed to be seeing these really cool Tokyo Olympic animations playing and psyching you up for the Summer Games? Guess what, it's been delayed to 2021. These equestrian surfing, they did such a good job with this animation, they're the mascots. I forget the names of the mascots, do you remember the names?
23:07:00 Kanae Daub: Yeah.
23:10:00 John Daub: So that's what you'd be seeing but right now we're the only people here in Terminal 1. Trevor the animation opening, Peter von Gomm is going to be adding some narration into it and it's done, looks pretty good. That's the song from Kura Sushi I think. Nobody, it's kind of creepy right? Let's go to the one more over and then we'll go out to the car.
24:03:00 John Daub: The information desk is creepy because there's nobody there. There are alcohol pumps everywhere. Oh it's automatic. Ah this is the sound of one hand flapping. Safety first, we didn't touch anything. But if you do need help you just call somebody remotely, it's a smart thing. So the information service is here, you just call them. Thank you information service, thank you for the hard work you do.
25:25:00 John Daub: We're heading home Chris and we just came here to drop off a friend. And this has been a pretty surreal experience for both of us to see how empty the terminal is. And it's kind of, how do I feel? I feel kind of sad. A part of me is kind of happy that there are no tourists here because it's quieter but that goes away quickly because it's like what's Christmas without kids right? You need to have some spirit to these attractions and Japan feels, I don't know, it's just a little bit depressing.
26:06:00 Kanae Daub: Where do you go home? Where's the exit? Do you remember the exit?
26:10:00 John Daub: I think this way, I think it was this way, I think it was right there yeah. So we're going to take you out now from Narita. Yeah we walked around here, Kanai is totally lost. So McDonald's is open, Mujirushi is open, Uniqlo is closed. There's a sushi shop that's open, they're doing their best to cater to the people that are here. And we can go down over here Kanai. So there you go everybody, we feel safe and protected. We're going to go to central Tokyo, it's about an hour drive from Narita. We're actually going to be making a stop at Costco on the way home. Maybe Kanai's got to get back to teach your students by 6 p.m. But I thought it was pretty neat to stop and give you a quick look and see. There's Arrivals over there, so that's what the Arrivals lobby looks like right now. I like the Welcome to Japan signs that they have and the massive TV.
27:47:00 John Daub: Peso says there's a maid cafe, that's surreal. That's as crazy as this place being empty. There's a maid cafe here. There are chairs and there's people that are crashing here, I don't know where they're from. Are they refugees? I don't know, I don't want to ask them. This mask doesn't even stay on, it's awful. I've already livestreamed, I've been to Costco and they've banned me I think. Okay wait, maybe the mask should go this way. Is that better? No it's the same. I think it was here right Kanai? Yeah. All right so that's it for the inside of Narita. I'm taking you out to the parking lot and showing you our sweet ride. As we exit Narita we're going to drive back to Tokyo. Look at that, that's departures, there's nobody departing. She's shocked, I was shocked too.
29:32:00 John Daub: In a livestream I did just a couple of hours ago in Kichijoji in Inokashira Park, a really nice guy called me gaijin (foreigner). No I know, I was shocked, it's like a slap in the face. I guess it's a compliment, it depends how you look at it. It's okay. Is it okay though? Is it really? I don't know I guess so. It's part of Japanese culture, this water wheel with carp. Here we go, parking lot.
30:25:00 John Daub: I already did so many livestreams from Costco, they've kind of banned me from livestreaming. You're not supposed to film in there and people come and the managers know me on sight because the videos that I did livestreaming there have a quarter million views or something. Technically you should ask, now Dan. So if you're going to be in somebody else's business or something you should ask for permission to film in there. The airport is sort of gray area, I think it's kind of public but if you go into a store or a supermarket or something it's okay maybe for a second as long as you're trying to cover the customers' faces because they don't want to be in your video of course. But inside of a Costco you really should be asking permission before you film in there and I did it before. Costco Japan is pretty cool, I already have three Costco videos from about two years ago. So if you go into Only in Japan Go and search Costco you'll come up with three amazing livestreams where I go in there, one of them where we find a massive tray of sushi and Peter von Gomm and I devour this.
32:08:00 John Daub: In his defense at Inokashira Park we were wearing masks and from a distance we were wearing masks. From a distance all foreigners look alike. But I think he was watching the stream right? It's an innocent mistake, I won't take offense that much. We were just teasing with you. Alright here's the parking lot and that's a sign that says terminal. I'm still so sad that we could not take you outside, that is really sad. But I will show you our car, look at that sweet ride. They call this a standard plus and I wanted to make sure we had enough space for his luggage. It was a bigger car, this is kind of the biggest car I've ever driven in Japan actually. It cost about $40, $50 more than the regular ones but it's a pretty sweet ride.
33:19:00 Kanae Daub: Why are you coming this way?
33:19:00 John Daub: You're sitting in the passenger seat, she's like following me. It's not a luxury car, this is normal stuff for Japan. It's a Camry, isn't a Camry like a normal car? A Camry right, they don't have Mark X's anymore, they only have Camrys. So that's that. How are you doing? Yeah so that's it. I'm glad that we got a chance to spend some time. Do click the like button, we get so few likes on the last video, I forgot to ask for them. You do, I do have to ask people. Say why do you ask for likes? If you don't then people don't like it. If you don't like it you won't get the notification that a new one has come up and I don't want you to miss it, any of these. But I hope you enjoyed this livestream from a deserted Narita Airport Terminal 1. And to my friend who's left have a good trip, maybe you're watching and you got some Wi-Fi. But it was really sad to see you go and it was sad to see the airport the way that it is. But we'll both miss you and hope that you come back to Japan really soon or we'll be on the other side, come visit you in Canada. Yeah great guys, have a good day. I'll see you later on tonight as I take this beautiful car for a spin around Tokyo before I return her at night. So you're going to get some Tokyo lights, probably around 7 p.m. Japan time, 6:30, 7 p.m. Japan time. I know in the U.S. a lot of you are going to be asleep, you're going to have to wake up to it. But for the rest of you it's going to be something special. Have a good day, bye, good night.
