Far from Osaka in the Mountains of Japan Wakayama
Far from Osaka in the Mountains of Japan Wakayama
Overview
In this unique travel vlog, John Daub escapes the hustle of Tokyo and Osaka to explore the remote, mountainous region of Wakayama Prefecture. He checks into a highly unusual accommodation: a renovated hotel room located directly inside Koyashita Station on the Nankai Line. Operating under the Hotel Nipponia brand, this space offers a blend of historical railway artifacts and modern luxury amenities.
The video captures the eerie quiet of the Japanese countryside at night, where John navigates the deserted station platforms and surrounding streets with only his flashlight. He encounters the local wildlife—specifically an abundance of bugs and spiders—leading to some humorous moments as he coexists with nature. Despite the creepy atmosphere, the room itself is revealed to be spacious, clean, and filled with nostalgic train memorabilia.
John provides context on the area's significance as a gateway to Koyasan, a major center for Shingon Buddhism. He shares practical details about accessing the region via the Nankai Pass from Kansai Airport or Osaka Namba. The vlog serves as a scout trip for future content, giving viewers an raw, unedited look at the location before a polished episode is produced.

- Yūrei (幽霊): Ghosts; John jokes about encountering them in the dark station.
- Moshi Moshi (もしもし): Standard greeting when answering the phone; John tests the retro room telephone.
- Buddhist Respect: John's decision to save a bug rather than kill it reflects the Buddhist principle of respecting all living creatures, pertinent to the Koyasan region.
Food & Drink Guide
- Shojin Ryori (Buddhist Vegetarian Cuisine): Mentioned as a delicious non-meat cuisine famous in Koyasan. John notes he had it previously and recommends it for its seasonal ingredients.
- Water: Provided in the room; John notes this is crucial as there are no vending machines nearby at night.
- Beer: John considers having a beer but decides against it due to the spider encounters potentially causing nightmares.

00:04:00 John Daub: How you doing everybody? Good evening from a very dark and quiet countryside town named Koyashita, not that far from Koyasan. There's nobody here at this station. It is absolutely deserted. It's dark. It's quiet. I'm getting like a Blair Witch Project vibe here. Where is everybody? What is that? All right, so this is land of bugs and lack of humans. Did you see that thing? It just flew. It attacked me. It had like stingers. It would have stung me but it didn't because I'm wearing like six layers of clothes.
00:45:00 John Daub: This station is on the Nankai line and I came here on this pass which is so cool. It allows for two days of unlimited travel on Nankai, which is the train you're supposed to take to go to Koyasan. You would get on from Kansai Airport. Look at this at the station. There's a little museum display thing going on here. Anyways, the hotel that I'm staying in tonight you won't believe this. It is actually in this station. I don't have to go anywhere. It's right there in this building. Do you see those lights turned on? I think that's my room. So I'm going to go in and check in. There's nobody here to check me in. I got a code to check myself in. It's creepy out here. This is about a little bit over an hour from Osaka Namba. The Nankai line goes from Namba out to Kansai and then to Koyasan and there's not that many trains. There's like sometimes one or two an hour but this is the Japanese countryside.
01:49:00 John Daub: If you're really quiet you can [inaudible] around you. When the train came this was down and we had to wait for the train to cross before we could get down into the station. I came here with another traveler who's staying in this room right here. Alright let's get over here. It's creepy. There's nobody here. There's no konbini (convenience store). I put a map in the description of this video so you can see exactly where I am. There's no staff here. You can see how much would it cost to get to Osaka Namba. It's about 810 yen. And we're here on the green line to Koyashita. This is quite pretty far. Like we traveled here. Whoa! Alright we're not gonna go that way.
03:13:00 John Daub: All right I hope you didn't build a spiderweb here. Don't build a web of lies and deceit in front of my door when I come out of here. Oh this is creepy. We traveled here quite far and we just traveled here. Whoa. All right we're not gonna go that way a little bit creepy maybe later all right let's go over to the room. I hope that that's not my restroom here. Okay I need to get the secret code but that's creepy there's a spider right there. I'm really sorry I gotta get in sir. Just I hope you didn't build a spiderweb here don't build a web of lies and deceit in front of my door when I come out of here. I remembered the number because I got it on a piece of paper and then I burned it. That spider's trying to get in. Just stay in your area, I'll stay in mine. Oh, this is so nice. Oh wow. No, the code is not 12345. Who said that? The spider did not get in.
04:42:00 John Daub: It smells like Japanese cedar. And there's a camera here to make sure that I guess somebody doesn't break in or someone's watching me. I don't know. It's kind of creepy outside. Let's go see what this room looks like. I can't believe I'm in the middle of the countryside sleeping inside the train station. Whoa! That is not what I expected at all. This is massive. What is this? Oh my gosh. What? This is such a cute little hotel room. This is crazy. Look at the chairs. This is obviously made for two people or more. Wow. This is so cute. Look at the hard wooden floors. We can take a look at the restroom in a second. Wow. I did not expect this. In an old station at Koyashita is a kind of like an Airbnb type room.
06:08:00 John Daub: What is this like retro telephone? Alright, alright. Don't touch it. Alright, I'm afraid that something might explode. The air conditioning is on. This is the genkan (entryway). You leave your shoes here. There are slippers there, but I'm okay. I don't want to waste the slippers. Wow, this is so cute. Look at this little window. This looks like the window like a door on a train. Oh! What? What? Don't tell me this is one of these auto open when you approach it. Okay, we're gonna get close to it. Okay, the lid won't open. Oh, it's a Toto. Nice. This is so weird. I did not expect this at all.
07:09:00 John Daub: Alright, let me take you into the bathroom. Look at this. Tony P, look at this restroom. Do you have anything like this where you're from? Nothing. Well, actually, you probably do. Why did I even say that? Okay, this is not what I expected. Look at this bathtub. This is like luxury. What? I expected this to be like, I don't know, rough. Again, I'm here on official business. This is official business. That is not a rain shower head. What is that doing here? It's so out of place. I don't know. This is really upscale. This is so, it's like there's a little authentic touches to it. This looks like an old station door that's been renovated. Like the station is really, really old. The room looks new. But they've kept some of the artifacts. Look at this. Looks like it's been used by the station for decades. And it's still, it's a part of the room, like this pole in here. Right? Look at the doors to the closet here. These look like they could have been part of the old station.
08:48:00 John Daub: Okay, there's a little vacuum in here. It's for housekeeping to change the sheets. There's a first aid kit. There is not Wi-Fi. Really? Oh, my gosh. I'm using 4G. It's okay. Air conditioner. Telephone. Let's see if this works. Moshi moshi. Moshi moshi. Let's see what they got on the table here. Okay, so here's some old tickets and you see some memorabilia. This is from Nankai is a rail line here in Kansai that goes from, as I said in the beginning, from Kansai Airport into Namba, which is the center of Osaka, not far from Dotonbori. And then you can also take the train from Namba or Kansai Airport to here, Koyasan, this area, which is famous for Shingon Buddhism and shojin ryori (Buddhist vegetarian cuisine), which is a very delicious non-meat cuisine. It's really good. I had this a couple of times in my life. And they use seasonal ingredients to make it really delicious. This is freaking cool, this room.
10:18:00 John Daub: All right, let's try the bed here. All right. Here we go. This is a really, really long day of traveling around. I'm going to take you outside now and just show you a little bit about around this creepy station. I say creepy, I say quaint. At night, it's a little creepy because there's no people around here. Let's be honest here. It's slightly Blair Witch creepy. I didn't bring any food because we had a massive dinner. There's water. That's good. So I don't have to go to a vending machine. Recycling, good. And a map of the area. Very good. Koyasan, right there. This is the start, one of the starts of Buddhism. Some people say this is the start to the Shikoku 88 Temple pilgrimage. But I guess it's not. I guess it was in the year like 800, 816 maybe.
11:45:00 John Daub: We're going to explore this town a little bit. Spider webs. That'll break the spider webs. There's no key. There's a weird bug on the ground. Tomorrow morning, I'm going to wake up early and we're going to go take a look at the nature around here, okay? I might do like two or three live streams tomorrow just because I can. It's going to be a fun day tomorrow. So be ready. Only in Japan Go is on the scout. I'm scouting for location shoots for topics to produce in this area of Japan. There's nothing here.
14:14:00 John Daub: All right, this is usually the sign for a police station or kōban (police box), but it looks like it's closed. I don't see any vending machines. There's not one convenience store. There's nothing here. This is really, be respectful. Be very quiet. There's really not much to show you. I feel some rain coming down. Just put the flashlight on. Okay, I'm getting the flashlight on. Okay, I am. I feel like some rain is starting to hit, starting to fall. So hopefully it doesn't rain too much. I'm going to be a little bit more careful tomorrow because that would really be bad for our live streams tomorrow. Again, I'm in Wakayama Prefecture. The link to the map of where I am, the station in which I'm staying at. So don't come out here and say hi. It's creepy enough. It's called Koyashita. And you can see exactly where I am in the map in the link in the description. Check it out. Manhole. It's a nice looking manhole cover. It's got some unique design. It's hard to see. We're going to have to get up in the morning to really investigate the manhole covers. It's a good manhole cover. There's another one here. So they're all pretty much of the same design. Interesting.
16:03:00 John Daub: Do you see anybody? Imagine if there was like some person or ghost or something like that. That'd be pretty creepy, right? We're going to go walk about for five minutes, okay? All right. Click the like button if you want me to go walk about. Click the like button. Just do it right now. Do it right now. Do it. All right. That's enough of that. I think there's a train coming. Let's see what we can find. There's a car coming. That was the lights. I thought I saw something move, but could have been just the dancing lights of the car as it was rounding the turn. There's a cigarette vending machine. It looks like the drink vending machine is closed. I don't need cigarettes. I don't smoke. In the background, you can hear something. I can hear some water rushing. I'm not going to be hiking 19 kilometers. I like the logos for the signs though. Koyasan is a very famous Buddhist world heritage site. Again, Buddhism came to Japan around the year 816, 809. The dates are a little bit, it's hard to say exactly, but it's just very, very old. There's nothing here. I'm going to go back. It's around 10:40.
19:26:00 John Daub: I got to get inside. There's something about the light I think is pissing off the insects. Here's a trail. This trail, where are we? Okay, we're here. It's kind of at the base. So, Koyashita means bottom. So, we must be at the bottom or the base of Koya, which is the mountain. Koya looks like the promised land right here. Look at this. We're going there tomorrow. We're going there. What is that in the corner? Ah! Ah! That is a big spider. Did you see that? It's not moving. Maybe it's dead. Stay out of my room. Keep to yourself. Spiders are not the enemy. I keep saying that. I can't believe I'm staying inside of a station. This is awesome. There's some history to the station. You can see on the very old Japanese town. Look at that old car going around. It's a good hike in here. Wakayama is not that far from Osaka. Well, samurai, it's worth it to come out here. A lot of the old traditions of Japan, this is where you really see it, out here.
21:38:00 John Daub: I'm going to talk to you a little bit inside of the room. I got to get out of here. I'm getting knocked around by spider webs just flying through the air. Whoa! There are two rooms here. This room, which my friend is staying in, and this room is just where I am. Let's go inside. It's awesome. That's where you exit the ticket. You exit there. I'm on a Nankai Pass. I'm going to key in here. Don't look up. There's like ten spiders. And there's one like ready to pounce on me. I didn't even know that. Look. Get back in there. These things could just jump on me and bite me and turn me into Spider-Man, lay eggs inside my ear. A little hatchway. I'm going to go to sleep. Tell me if it moves. I forgot the code. How do I know that the spiders won't go into my shoe when I go to sleep? When I wake up, there could be a spider in my shoe. Australians have to deal with this. I heard that like wolf spiders and red backs and whatever, they all kind of...
24:03:00 John Daub: Hold on. I got to turn the light on. There's like some sort of weird bee in here. How do you get that out? It seems to like the light. Fly to the light. I know how to get rid of it. Turn off all the lights and the bug will fly to the light on the outside. It's using my head now. Don't fly into the toilet light. It'll flush you down. Okay, let's turn off the light. Maybe it'll go to the light now. Fly away. Stuck to the ceiling. I'm not going to kill it. See it? I'm not going to kill it because this is a Buddhist area. And if you've watched anything, you know that it's going towards the light. I did a good job. I did a good thing. I saved its life. All right, get out of here. Get out. You did not pay for this room. Get out. Go with the spider. Be careful of the spiders. I can't let you out and I can't keep you in because the spiders will get you. If I let you out, don't go anywhere where the spiders are. Get out this way. Get out this way. No, don't go towards the other light. Stupid bug. Go out here. Turn this light off. I just did it. I turn off this light. Close the door. Close the door. Okay, we did it. We just saved a life. We saved a life, everybody. I didn't smush it and I put it in a safe room where the spiders weren't there.
26:35:00 John Daub: You didn't kill it. It will kill you. That is not a philosophy that you should follow. It's harmless. It had nothing to do with death, all right? I don't have nightmares about it. If you don't kill it, it will kill you. What game is this? Who wrote that? This is not a game. It's life, all right? Don't mess with living creatures. Treat all living creatures with respect. I didn't grow up learning this. It just hit me right now because the spiders let me pass. They let me pass. If the spiders let me pass, then I should not mess with their... They were here first, actually. Interesting. So this actually has a hotel name. This is inside of the station. It's called Hotel Nipponia. It's really nice. There's a QR code that you can check this out with. It's a pretty nice experience. I think this is the kind of experience that a lot of you might be looking for, to stay inside of a train station.
27:37:00 John Daub: I got to change the title of this livestream to Spider Almost Killed Me. Or I Saved a Bug's Life. Lots of different title ideas here. Can you check the windows? You mean for spiders? I'd rather not. Sometimes ignorance is good. Not knowing. Do you really want to know if there's a spider? Okay. Check the windows. For what? Yūrei (ghosts)? It's all clean. It's actually very, very nice. Okay? It's just the outside that's a little bit... The air conditioning is on here. It is very, very hot. Okay. Very clean. No bugs on the inside. I like it. Not one bug. Very, very clean. The bugs are on the outside. Moises Barboza. Check under the bed. Horror Movie 101. Never check under the bed. In any ways, you can't. Because there's nothing under the bed. Nothing can get underneath there. It's just not worth checking. All right? I already checked in the closet. Okay? I'm just going to check under the bed. Stop telling me to check under stuff. Check behind the bathtub. All right. There. You satisfied? There's nothing there.
29:06:00 John Daub: I'll tell you one thing, though. Johnny's taking a bath. Oh, yeah. Maybe there were some spiders in here. There's some spiders. We're all good. Oh, it's nice and warm. Oh, this is going to be an awesome bath. I'm not inviting you to the bath party. Don't even ask. Beautiful, beautiful room. Complete with Q-tips. You can control the temperature of the water by the gas heater here. So down. It's nice. No beers, actually. It's okay. I'm not in a mood to drink after seeing the spiders. It's just going to give me nightmares. It's really nice, isn't it? I just wanted to do that because it looked inviting. Yeah, this is Koyasan, and I came here on this Nankai Pass from Namba. It's a really nice room. I think that you should check it out. The link is in the description. Tomorrow, I'm going to be hiking around Koyasan, kind of investigating this. I'm here to scout for an edited video and episode. So these live streams are kind of neat because you're here in advance. You're going to get a chance to see possibly of what an episode is going to look like when I come back here to film again. And often when I make a YouTube video, I like to make it a little bit longer. I like to talk to people and get an idea of a story and see if I can find something really special. And I was invited to come here because, yeah, I basically had to come here and do this. So tomorrow we're going to get a chance to check out the area. I get back to Tokyo on Thursday, leave here in the morning.
31:28:00 John Daub: I love the little touches. Look at this. They've taken things from the train and put them here in the room. The little touches are outstanding. Look at this. This is a luggage rack from an old train. That's a train bench. Have you figured this out? That is a seat from a train. You guys have figured this out, right? The smart ones have. This is nice. It's like a web. The little details make everything special. And even the chairs here look like they're from another era. Yeah. All right, guys. I hope this is helpful. This is fun. I'm going to be back here tomorrow morning. I'm going to take a bath and just go straight to sleep. Tomorrow I'll probably be up around 7, 7:30 a.m. And take a little walk around this area and show you what it's like. And maybe the room is a little bit different in the morning. I'm going to have to break out of the room. There's going to be spider webs all across there, I think. How do you get out? I know how to get in. I don't think I can get out. Would you go out? I wouldn't. Not only is there a killer fly that's angry because I took him away from the light and then turned off the light. But there's also a dozen spiders webbing me in. I might have to leave through a window. I've seen Arachnophobia. They just cover the entire house. And there's so many of them. They may be this small now. But when I wake up in the morning, I don't know what they eat here. They could be like this big. You don't know. You really don't know. How can you say you know if you don't know? Because you don't know.
34:03:00 John Daub: All right. The beds look comfortable. Everything looks really good. I think I'm going to be safe sleeping away from the window. Loads of towels. Everything that I need here. Two toothbrushes. Perfect. I only needed one. Got a backup. Two earplugs. Why would I need that? Is there like locomotives going by here? A body towel. I need that. His and hers. So I guess four people can stay here. And I think according to the schedule, a train is going to be rolling through here. That's the station that we started on the other side. A train is going to be rolling through here maybe two more times before they shut down for the night. And I guess they turn off the lights. Yeah. Pretty fun stuff. Thanks again for the people who signed up as members. You see the green people with the little badges there. I appreciate it. I have an insider's update for you coming with some inside information. I also have some secret live streams. If you're an insider, I'll probably do another secret live stream, probably on the Shinkansen going back to Tokyo. So you get a chance to come with me if you're an insider on Thursday. We're going to do a Shinkansen ride together. And that's about it. Leave a comment below in the comments. And I'll put a link in the description if you're interested in this room or this station or coming to this area. It's really interesting. It was really cool to just walk from the train platform. I exit and it's like right there on the left side. Like what? I keyed in the code. They sent me the code after checking in. I was able to key in and boom. I'm inside of a station.
36:01:00 John Daub: Introverted Otaku writes in. Hey, John, I wanted to ask, will the old OIJ? I really don't know. That's I'm done talking about it. If you want to know what's happening to the other channel, you can email them. What do I know? I make the content. They put it up. They do with it what they want. That's it. So sleep well. Sleep safely. Check your windows. Check your doors. Make sure there's no spiders. If you're an Aussie, you're used to spiders the size of your head. If you're not, you're probably not. But just know that I'm out in the woods and you're not. And tomorrow you will be because we're going to wake up early and explore a town that seems to have like a population of 20. It's not a lot. If you have any questions again, like leave me a comment below about this amazing area. I'm in Wakayama. I've escaped Tokyo and take care and see you next time. I'm going to give you the last 20 seconds looking at this bed that you're not in because like you want to be maybe you can't be. Just look at that and look at this old original from part of the station. Just look at the color. This station is here. It's really nice. Subscribe.
