Tokyo Disneyland Park Driving View
Tokyo Disneyland Park Driving View
Overview
In this unique driving tour, John Daub takes viewers on a loop around the Tokyo Disneyland Resort during the summer of 2020. Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the usually bustling resort is quiet, offering a rare glimpse of the perimeter roads, hotels, and park exteriors without the crowds. Accompanied by his wife Kanae Daub, John navigates a rented Toyota Vitz, showcasing the infrastructure that supports the massive theme park complex.
The video provides a practical perspective for travelers who might drive to the resort, highlighting the parking entrances, the monorail track, and the various official hotels surrounding the parks. John points out key landmarks like the Tower of Terror, the SS Columbia at Tokyo DisneySea, and the Ikspiari shopping mall. The drive serves as both a virtual tour and a travel guide, discussing hotel recommendations, car rental tips, and the strict ticketing lottery system in place at the time.
Beyond the sights, the video captures the atmosphere of Japan during the pandemic—masks, social distancing lines, and reduced capacity. John shares personal insights on staying in the area versus Tokyo proper, recommending the Sheraton Grande Tokyo Bay Hotel for its value and amenities. The episode concludes with a look at their rental car and plans for household shopping, grounding the magical setting in the reality of daily life in 2020.

Japan Travel Tips
- Driving to Disney: There is a dedicated perimeter road that loops around both Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea. It takes about 15–20 minutes to drive the full loop.
- Parking: Large parking structures are available near the entrances. The drive-thru ticket booths resemble those in Orlando, Florida.
- Hotel Recommendations: John recommends the Sheraton Grande Tokyo Bay Hotel for its cost performance, spacious rooms, and amenities (pools, buffets). It is about 30 minutes from central Tokyo.
- Train Access: Most visitors arrive via Maihama Station on the Keiyo Line. The Disney Resort Line (monorail) connects the station to the parks and hotels.
- Shopping: Ikspiari is a large shopping mall near Maihama Station that does not require a park ticket to enter. Bon Voyage is the last chance shop for Disney goods outside the gates.
- Car Rental: John uses Toyota Rent-A-Car. He notes they are reasonably priced, fill the gas tank, and are lenient with minor damage compared to other companies.
- Pandemic Precautions (2020 Context): Park entry required a lottery system due to capacity limits. Social distancing was enforced, staff wore face shields, and Fast Passes were suspended.
Japanese Language & Culture Notes
- Ikspiari (イクスピアリ): A shopping and entertainment complex at the resort. Pronounced similarly to "Pixari," it is accessible to the public without park tickets.
- Urayasu (浦安市): The city in Chiba Prefecture where the Tokyo Disney Resort is located. Though often called "Tokyo Disneyland," it is technically in Chiba.
- Maihama (舞浜): The specific neighborhood and station name serving the resort.
- Vitz (ヴィッツ): A popular compact car model by Toyota (known as Yaris in some markets), often used for rentals.
- Oriental Land Company: The company that owns and operates the Tokyo Disney Resort. John points out their offices during the drive.
- Toby (crow): John's nickname for any crow he encounters. He jokes that crows are lucky because they don't need tickets to fly into the park.
Food & Drink Guide
Note: No food is consumed on camera, but John discusses plans for shopping.
- Costco Muffins: Mentioned by viewers and John as a favorite item.
- Costco Pizza: John mentions getting a combination pizza slice.
- Bulgogi Bake: A specific Costco food court item John enjoys.
- Location: Costco is mentioned as a destination after the Disney drive for household supplies.
People
- John Daub: Host and driver. Provides commentary on the sights, travel tips, and personal experiences with the resort.
- Kanae Daub: John's wife. Navigates, monitors live chat comments, and shares observations about the hotels and parks.
- Toby (crow): A recurring "character" in John's videos; a crow spotted flying near the park.
- Live Chat Viewers: Several viewers are acknowledged by name (Jake, Jeff Ng, Michael, Wion, Shane, etc.), contributing to the live stream atmosphere.
Key Takeaways
- Unique Perspective: Driving around the resort offers a view of the infrastructure and hotels that most train-arriving visitors never see.
- Quiet Atmosphere: The pandemic reduced crowds significantly, making the usually chaotic area feel eerie and calm.
- Hotel Value: Staying at the resort hotels (like the Sheraton) can offer better value and space than central Tokyo hotels, with easy access to the parks.
- Ticketing Changes: During the pandemic, entry required advance planning via a lottery system, and capacity was strictly limited.
- Rental Car Reliability: Toyota Rent-A-Car is highlighted as a trustworthy option for foreigners renting vehicles in Japan.

Full Transcript
00:00:04 John Daub: Greetings everybody! Welcome to Tokyo Disneyland Resort! This is so cool! Do you see this road right here? This road takes you around Tokyo Disneyland. It takes about 15-20 minutes. There's a monorail that'll take you around the entire Disneyland, but guess what? We're giving you a completely different experience. One that is by car. This is what you would see if you came by car looking to park here at Tokyo Disneyland. There's the parking lot in the distance and it looks very much like Tokyo Disney World and all the times as a kid when we drove to Orlando, Florida we come up this huge drive-thru with the ticket booths where you could go and park your car.
00:00:47 John Daub: That's there in the distance and right in front of us is our Toyota which we're gonna be driving around. Kanae Daub's waiting for me already. So let's jump into the car and get this live stream started everybody. Is this gonna be exciting? I don't know! I've never driven around Tokyo Disneyland before. All I know is that it's gonna be a unique experience. Are you ready? How you doing?
00:01:17 John Daub: All right, time to get this off of the gimbal and you guys are going into this. Voila! For a drive around Tokyo Disney. Very cool. Everyone say hi Kanae. It's very hot. It's very very hot today. It's about 35 degrees Celsius. What is that? Like 88, 90 degrees. Seatbelt on.
00:01:43 John Daub: So that as I said to you, hey Jake, is the entrance to Tokyo Disneyland and yeah this is where you would go when you would park. We're not doing that. We're gonna be taking a very hard right out of here and going around. There's a lot of hotels here. The Sheraton, the Hyatt, the Hilton, the Okura and we're getting a chance to see all of that if we can. Kanae Daub's gonna take this out and maybe show you certain things of it and I'm gonna be focusing on the driving. If you have any questions, you can write it and Kanae Daub's watching that so we can share this experience with you. Let's get moving.
00:02:36 John Daub: Tokyo Disneyland by car. It's kind of cool. So you can see already that we're going around Tokyo Disneyland here. On the left and the right there are these palm trees which give it a very California like Florida type of feel. I'm gonna close the window here. The speed limit is 50 kilometers per hour. We're gonna stay at 50. We're not gonna go any faster than this. So Kanae, if you put your finger here it won't vibrate as much. Yeah, not as much. Just a little bit light. Very cool.
00:03:20 John Daub: Again the monorail, we're gonna see this on the left side going around the park in a second. I'll put a link in the description to the video. So this is the map where we started which is that sign, that road sign which takes you, when you drive into here from Maihama, you get a chance to see that sign. It always brings a little bit of excitement when you see that. Now this is all around it. This is a man-made island and when the waves do get high. Okay this is the first hotel. Tokyo Bay Maihama Hotel. Very cool.
00:03:52 John Daub: You can see some of the hotels. There we go. Which one's that? Tokyo Bay. Okay. There we're going to Tokyo Bay. Okay. I fun there we go. Tokyo Bay hotel. It's a similar seeing as but big. It's Grand Nikko. Grand Nikko yeah. Panda is looking for any comments here. Here's the Hilton up ahead.
00:04:07 Kanae Daub: Hi John they look and I drive safe and get something to drink is that Jeff Ng. Jeff Ng. Thank you.
00:04:28 John Daub: Oh why are our [inaudible]. Good morning. I'm gone. We're all shaking out. Ten reason that was not. Now now I'm thinking right now there's some sort of something on the road that makes the car shake. I guess it wakes people up on that curve there. It's a beautiful place that if you do spend the night here, you get an amazing view of the sea or if you're looking into the park sometimes. Yeah, they're making something. They're making some new hotel here. There's almost no traffic on this road, which is perfect.
00:05:06 John Daub: At Tokyo Disneyland, they're making a new place, new area. Oh yeah. I heard that Beauty and the Beast. Oh right, there's a new park that they're cooking up. Should be open soon. I like how the signs are purple here. Do you see that? Tokyo Disneyland, Tokyo DisneySea is this way.
00:05:22 Kanae Daub: Are you going inside the DisneySea?
00:05:25 John Daub: No. No, but I can see it. Okay, cool. I'm turning. There's a red light here, but you can see the park on the left side. Yes. And there's the boat for Tokyo DisneySea. Do you see that in the distance? Right where those trucks are turning. That's the DisneySea. Yeah. What's the name of that? I love that [Chiba-don hotel?]. Yeah. Do you see that? That's the ship for Tokyo DisneySea, right? Yeah. What's that ship called? There's like the American something or other. Um... That's pretty neat that you can see this from the road. I've never driven around it before.
00:05:58 Kanae Daub: Michael. Sorry, Michael. Not Michelle. Sorry. Mr. Donut Mochi Donut. Oh yeah. He's saying, get some donuts.
00:06:14 John Daub: Can I ask, what does fund mean? She's looking at me. Fund means that's for some donuts. Oh, that said, the DisneySea parking lot's coming up next. Yeah. Cool. We're gonna go all the way around and you're gonna see the entrance to Tokyo Disneyland and then Tokyo DisneySea.
00:06:37 Kanae Daub: I can see that tower.
00:06:48 John Daub: That's the haunted tower. Do you see it? Yeah. Tower of Terror. Tower of Terror or Terror Tower. I don't know what it is.
00:07:06 Kanae Daub: Pier 3.
00:07:06 John Daub: We get some wolverines in here trolling the livestream every now and then. All right, go straight. I guess we... I don't want to go into the Tokyo DisneySea.
00:07:17 Kanae Daub: Can we just take a quick look-see? It's parking, so... What's the parking? You want to park here?
00:07:22 John Daub: No, I don't, but this is the parking for... We are... Yeah, it's entrance of the Tokyo DisneySea parking. Okay, well, we can kind of... Let's give people a quick look at this here. But we can coming back. No, no, no. I can just go like this. I have the... Okay. You can see... No, you cannot. It's all right. That's the entrance into Tokyo DisneySea.
00:07:43 John Daub: So that kind of looks like Tokyo Disneyland, right? Hold on a second. I can turn the engine off, then we'll stop shaking. That kind of looks like the entrance to Tokyo Disneyland, but it's newer. It's got a gold DisneySea on there. That's kind of neat. So this is what it would look like if you drove in there.
00:08:00 Kanae Daub: She's like, pan out.
00:08:01 John Daub: And just over our shoulder here, you can see... Tower. Okay, I can take it out here. Here, open your window. You turn off that. What? Did I do that? I did do that. There it is. That's the Tower of Terror. It's pretty cool. It seems so quiet here, doesn't it? That tower looks like a hotel.
00:08:25 Kanae Daub: I don't like it. It's scary.
00:08:26 John Daub: It is kind of scary. I don't hear any screams. It must not be a lot of people, or people are just used to that ride now. Again, you can see the banks there. If you were to climb over the banks, you would see into the bay area. You're going back onto this thing around the car, so we can keep going. Yeah. Let's see here.
00:08:52 Kanae Daub: Who's driving? I'm driving.
00:08:54 John Daub: SSS Columbia. That's right. That's what it's called, right? Ah. Wion writes in Ohio, Christopher, welcome to membership. Raymond Centeno, because can I grace us with your presence today? That's true. And Jake, thank you so much, Jake. Thank you. All right. Let's get going. Oh, I can see Columbia. Oh, you can see the Columbia right there. Yeah. Ship. All right. Time to start the car engine. Did I start the engine? These cars are so quiet.
00:09:25 Kanae Daub: Don't play the car. I don't know if the car is on or not. It's car-ped. Drive. Drive. Is it on? Push ignition. The key is right here. The key is right here. Hi, Shane. It's not going. Thank you. It's not going, can I? Okay. I got it. I got it. Oh, Wion. Oh, Shane's here. Yeah, Shane. Happy birthday number two. We take you to Disneyland and had a cake the other day in Wion. How you doing, Wion? From Switzerland. Awesome.
00:10:18 John Daub: All right. Let's continue this tour. We are here. You got it? I got it. I got it. Okay. We are here to see some Disney. At Disney, we shall see. So this is the entrance to Tokyo DisneySea. Let's go around and I'm going to take you to the entrance of Tokyo Disneyland. On the other side is Urayasu, which is part of Tokyo. It's too bad that Solaris is here. Solaris is probably thinking, what are you doing here without me, man. So there's... There's no car right here. There's no cars. I know. There's nobody going in. It's creepy. Kind of creepy.
00:10:56 John Daub: Yeah, Spencer, who does the Tokyo Disneyland planning website there, I always think that he's... I think he was going to live in this area. Bouncy, tactile pavement asphalt here. All right. Now we're going around here. That looks like Ikspiari in the distance here. Ikspiari (shopping mall) is at the entrance of Maihama Station. If you do come from Tokyo Station, you have Maihama Station. And there are some little... There are some attractions here on the right side. You can't see it, but there's... To help pay for the fuel for today's drive. Enjoy the air quality. Oh, hey, guest money. That's nice. Thank you.
00:11:48 John Daub: All right, let's go left. All right, I think we're going to be going past that Disney hotel. We go left? What's it called? I think so. Yeah, there's Ikspiari. This is way too hotel. Oh, did I make a mistake? I think I can turn around. Yeah, I think you did a mistake. This is entrance of Tokyo DisneySea. I think you did a mistake. I don't know if you can see me, but it's entrance of Hotel MiraCosta. This is the MiraCosta entrance. Oh, this looks really nice. Oh, yeah, there's the MiraCosta entrance. There's like a... Oh, he waved at us. He waved at us. We made a mistake, and we got a wave. That's nice. That was so Disney-esque. Oh, there's the monorail. All right, just let the monorail go. Hold on. Awesome. Mickey window. There's the Mickey windows. We're... We're underneath the monorail. How cool is that?
00:12:56 Kanae Daub: What's your favorite ride at Tokyo Disney?
00:13:00 John Daub: Oh, I don't know. That's a good question. Ikspiari is straight, so we should keep going straight, right? Ikspiari is straight, right? Yes. It's also way to Disney Ambassador Hotel. This way? I don't know where I'm going. Oh, no, wait. Hold on. We turn left here, right? We turn left here, right? Before. Oh, yeah. So we want to actually go left. Well, we can't. It's too late. It's never too late. Uh-oh. Uh-oh. It's never too late. Yeah, I can't. It's in the house car.
00:13:48 John Daub: Nice to see... Oh. Nice to see... Oh. It's just... It's gone. I was reading, but it's gone. We're kind of in between traffic here. If you're lucky, maybe you'll get a chance to see. Um, I'm going to go to the next one. To see another, uh... To see another, uh... Monorail. Maybe not. Just the light. Yeah. So this looks like some kind of, um... Oh, this is the office. Oh, this is the office. Yeah, that's the office. So this is a Disney... This is the Oriental Land. Yeah. This is the office. Those are Disney employees going out there. Mm. One of these guys is Mickey Mouse. They're office worker. Oh, Disney office workers. Oriental Land Company that owns it. Yeah. So Tokyo Disneyland is owned by Oriental Land Company, which made this, um... Island. It's a man-made island that they're on.
00:14:41 John Daub: Look at that crow that just came up there. Toby (crow)s are so lucky. They don't even need tickets. They can just fly into the park. Unless they have some sort of like Star Wars blaster that gets rid of the crows. So that means the hotel, I believe one of the... Is that the one on the right side? Do you see this? Hold on a second. That is the Ambassador Hotel. Yeah. So we're going a little bit slower. That's the Ambassador Hotel we see. Looks like it gets closed. It's cute. Cute looking. Looks closed.
00:15:16 Kanae Daub: And this is Ixpiari, which is the shopping mall. No, this is a hotel. No, this is Ikspiari. Really? Trust me. I know my Disney Ikspiari.
00:15:29 John Daub: Okay. Because you don't need a ticket to get going to Ikspiari. Yeah. All right. And this is... The reason why I turned it... And there goes the monorail again. This is the entrance to Maihama Station. Maihama Train Station. This is where most of you would arrive from here. There's no traffic here, so we can go pretty slowly. There's some Disney buses. We've almost circumnavigated the Disney area here. There's a Disney store. If you come in, you can buy your...
00:16:09 Kanae Daub: Bon Voyage.
00:16:09 John Daub: Bon Voyage, right. The last chance to buy Disney goods. And there's people on the bridge there. They're online to go to the shop. What? They're in line to go to the shop? They're doing social distancing. Oh, that's a social distancing? There's social distancing going on up there. Interesting. That's to go into the Tokyo Disneyland... Yeah. There's the entrance right there on the left side. This is where you would walk into the Disneyland Park. Even the police station is a police station right there. Oh. Hey, I'm cool with that. I'm not in a hurry to... The left side is the... I'm not in a hurry. Tokyo Disneyland Hotel. Oh, that's a Tokyo Disneyland Hotel? Behind us is the... Let's see if I can show them here. Okay. Okay. I have to go. There's... Everybody kind of knows that. You walk through this. Welcome to Tokyo Disneyland.
00:17:12 John Daub: Here, Kanae. You take it. Safety first. Safety first. So this one is Tokyo Disneyland Hotel. There's nobody behind me. It's nice looking. It's pretty looking hotel. Oh, you're being so... Oh, can you see this? Hey, look where we are, Kanae. Okay. We've circum... There's the Ferris wheel. No, no. There's a Ferris wheel for Kasai Rinkai Park. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Tokyo Disneyland. Tokyo Disney Resort Fountain. That's it. We circumnavigated it, man. There's the Tokyo Disneyland. We can pull in here for a second again. That's it. All right. Sorry about my finger. I know. You're showing everybody your... You gave people the finger. It's all right. We forgive you. We forgive you.
00:18:31 John Daub: Tomorrow is a holiday here. We're in Japan. So a lot of people are going shopping. We're doing some last-minute shopping before the rush. We have our masks on. We're going to be... We have to get something at Ikea. And then we're going back home where I got a lot of editing to do. Get a new release on the new channel coming in the next 48 hours. Just checking the historical accuracy. Once you upload, you cannot un-upload in a video. So it's going to take a little bit of time. But I hope you enjoyed this. This was interesting because for those of you've come to Tokyo Disneyland before, this might be the first time you've gotten a chance to see what it actually looks like to be looping around here.
00:19:10 John Daub: I always stay at the Sheraton Hotel. If you have a hotel recommendation for Tokyo Disneyland, you can write it right now into the chat or leave it in the comments below because a lot of people are always looking for that information. But we always stay at the Sheraton because cost performance is amazing. The rooms are usually pretty spacious compared to the ones that you get into the city. I have friends... My friends, What's Inside Dan and Lincoln, stayed in the hotels here because the rooms are bigger and it's Disney. I mean, it's only about 30 minutes to get into the city of Tokyo. So staying at Tokyo Disneyland's Sheraton Hotel is... Actually, you probably save money. And it's not that bad of a hike to get into the city. And there's lots of amenities at the hotels. There's swimming pools. For kids, staying here is awesome. And you don't even... Yeah, the buffet. Buffet, which... You shouldn't be going to now, but... It's pretty easy to get into the city and you don't have to go into the park. There are loads of other attractions just in this island, which in itself could be another episode.
00:20:14 John Daub: So if you have any questions here, I'm going to take some of them. This is just a short live stream. And if you want to see some more Disney, give us a thumbs up here on this video. What kind of car do you have? I can take you around it in a second. Hold on a sec. So... Toyota. Yeah, this is a Toyota. You want to see the car? Alright, okay. So this is a Toyota. This is a really cheap car. Put the blinkers on. Okay, I'm done. We need to park. Oh my god. I'm so excited. Alright, here's the car right here. This is... I don't know what it is. It's a Honda... Toyota something. This is a budget car. It's for a six-hour rental. So was about 5,000 yen, about 50 bucks. Which is actually a little bit pricey. But I always trust the Toyota Rent-A-Car. We spend maybe another 15 dollars. Oh, this is a Vitz. Yeah. It's a compact. Yeah. We spend a little bit more. And the service is always so good at the Toyota Rent-A-Car. I've never had a problem with them. And so there you go.
00:21:34 John Daub: This is our driving to Tokyo Disneyland. Kind of take you around here as we go to Costco and Ikea to get some stuff for the long haul. Because it's a vacation. We don't have a vacation. In Japan, a lot of people don't have a vacation. A lot of people have been told not to leave Tokyo. So we're going to stay in this area. Just get the things that we need to before the holiday rush. Get back home and we're staying in for the next four or five days. Because everybody... A lot of people usually go back to their hometowns. This isn't a good time for that. I don't think it is anyways. Let's get inside. Get out of the wind a little bit.
00:22:13 John Daub: Yeah, Toyotas are pretty good cars. And I've rented cars from Nippon Rent-A-Car, Oryx. There's a lot of really good Rent-A-Car companies here. But I just kind of been using Toyota Rent-A-Car. Because I don't know. If there's little damage and stuff, they're pretty cool about it. And they always fill the gas tank. It's always reasonably priced. It's the same as if... I always return the tank on empty. And they never overcharge me for the gasoline. And it's another reason. It pays for itself to pay a little bit more. Because you don't get dinged with all these little micro charges. So I've been pretty happy with Toyota Rent-A-Car. In the end, it comes out to be just about the same.
00:22:51 John Daub: Craig Kawaguchi. Rockin' it. Brendan Walker. For Bounty of Costco Muffins. Yes! Those Costco Muffins are pretty good. And King Long vending machine funds incoming. You got that right. I got to get kind of a slice of pizza from Costco. Pizza. You know, the combination pizza. And maybe one of those bulgogi bakes. These wrappers that they have there are really good. But we got to get some stuff for the next couple of months. We're not going to be leaving Tokyo too much. The situation in Tokyo is not too good right now. But I think that's fine. How many people are there? 472 today. Yeah. About 470 people. I think around 400. Yeah, about over 400 people had infections in just Tokyo today. So we're not going to be leaving too much.
00:23:38 Kanae Daub: Hey, Ellis is in the house. With David. Is David there?
00:23:42 John Daub: Great to see you guys on the road again. Feed Kanae. You got that right, Ellis. You got that right. Thank you. All right, guys. Just a short stream to brighten your day. From Tokyo Disneyland. One of these days we're going to be going back in there. It's very, very hard to get the tickets to go in. I believe that you have to order it two or three months in advance. And they're already booked, like sold out. It's a lottery. It's a lottery. So you have to win the lottery to get the tickets. But the reality is that, I mean, we don't really want to go in there right now. Not with this kind of a situation. However, they are taking really good precautions. So if you do win the lottery to go in there, people have felt pretty comfortable. Their social distancing is being enforced. The staff all have face shields on. And the people are washing their hands before each ride. They've done a pretty good job to make sure as much as possible that you'll be safe.
00:24:35 John Daub: I thought there's no fast pass. No fast passes. Because of not too much people inside the park. Yeah, that's a good thing. That's really good. Not too many people inside the park. That keeps it down. And you can see there's not a lot of people who are riding. And they're rushing in to get here. It is 3:50. 3:56 p.m. So it's not like people are coming to Disney right now. But I can tell you, not a lot of people are allowed to enter in the park. Again, it's not at full capacity. This is the drive. This is where you drive your car into the parking lot.
