Summary

Japanese Beach Town looks like California Zushi

Overview

In this unique episode, John Daub takes a break from Tokyo to visit the coastal town of Zushi in Kanagawa Prefecture. Accompanied by fellow YouTuber and friend Dean Newcomb (Runaway Japan), John explores the Zushi Marina area, noting its striking resemblance to California beach towns like Malibu or Newport Beach. The video captures a rare warm January afternoon, showcasing the relaxed atmosphere, luxury yachts, and scenic views that make this area a popular getaway for Tokyo residents.

Throughout the walk, John and Dean discuss the local geography, pointing out nearby Hayama, Kamakura, and Enoshima. They also spot Mount Fuji in the distance, partially obscured by haze. The episode serves as both a travel showcase and a collaboration announcement, highlighting the connection between the Only in Japan and Runaway Japan channels. John's stepson, Keiji, also makes a brief appearance, adding a family touch to the vlog.

Japan Travel Tips

  • Getting There: While John mentions the Sobu Line in the video, the primary train line serving Zushi from Tokyo is the JR Yokosuka Line. It connects directly from Tokyo Station, Shinagawa, and Yokohama.
  • Best Time to Visit: Summer is peak beach season, but winter days (like this January visit) can be surprisingly warm and clear, offering better views of Mount Fuji without summer haze.
  • What to See: Zushi Marina, Zushi Beach, and nearby Kamakura for temples and history.
  • Activity: Great for walking, sailing, kayaking, or simply relaxing by the ocean.
  • Cost: Free to walk around the marina and beach areas. Dining and marina services vary in price.
  • Tip for Foreigners: The area feels very Westernized, making it a comfortable introduction to Japanese coastal life. English is somewhat understood due to the international resident population.

Japanese Language & Culture Notes

  • Wagyu: John mentions "Hayama beef" where the Emperor gets his wagyu (Japanese beef). Hayama is indeed known for high-quality beef production.
  • Imperial Residence: The Emperor maintains a residence in Hayama (Hayama Imperial Villa), used primarily as a summer retreat.
  • Fujisan: John refers to Mount Fuji as Fujisan later in the video, respecting the Japanese honorific suffix.
  • Kimono: John jokes about wanting to see people in kimono (traditional Japanese clothing) walking by to make the scene feel more traditionally Japanese.
  • Chillax: Dean uses the portmanteau "chillax" (chill + relax), highlighting the laid-back expat culture in the area.

Food & Drink Guide

  • Coffee: John notes people outside having "coffee time" due to the warm weather. Several cafes exist around the marina area.
  • Restaurant: A restaurant at the marina is spotted (Established 1971), noted as looking pricey. No specific dishes were consumed in this episode.

People

  • John Daub: Host. Exploring the Zushi area, providing commentary on the landscape and culture.
  • Dean Newcomb: Friend and fellow YouTuber (Runaway Japan). Guides John around the marina, shares local knowledge and personal stories.
  • Keiji: John's stepson. Appears briefly towards the end, promoting the Runaway Japan channel.

Key Takeaways

  • Zushi offers a "California vibe" within Japan, popular among Tokyoites for weekend getaways.
  • The area is accessible by train, though having a car offers more freedom to explore nearby Hayama and Kamakura.
  • Mount Fuji is visible from the marina on clear days, though haze can obscure it even in sunny weather.
  • Collaboration between expat YouTubers highlights the supportive community of foreign creators in Japan.

Notable Quotes

  • 00:05 "Wow, what a beautiful afternoon in January. I cannot believe it's January."
  • 01:52 "From Tokyo to shoot here because it looks like you're in California, which is exotic for them."
  • 03:15 "If everybody can quickly throw some money in the pot, John can get his own Only in Japan yacht."

00:05 John Daub: Wow, what a beautiful afternoon in January. I cannot believe it's January. The sun is out and it's actually warm. It feels like May right now. This is, I guess, the Pacific Ocean?

00:23 John Daub: It is. How you doing, everybody? That's Dean, my buddy here. We were filming. I had to film one last scene before an episode that's coming out this weekend and I had to drive down here just to film it and I'm going back up to Tokyo. But before I go back, I thought I would show you a little bit of this area. This is actually near Zushi, right? Or is this Zushi?

00:43 Dean Newcomb: This is, as far as I know, Zushi Marina. Yeah, Zushi Marina. One side that way is Kamakura and then that way is Hayama. It's lovely down here.

00:53 John Daub: Oh, so this is Hayama. I come down here a lot for shooting because it's so picturesque. It doesn't feel like Japan, right? Isn't Hayama beef where the emperor gets his wagyu? Oh yeah, he's actually got a place over there. The emperor's beach house or whatever it is. Wow. So the emperor has a house here along the seaside. Actually, I think maybe we can go down this way and take a look at the marina.

01:21 John Daub: This way, in this direction, you could actually see Mount Fuji, but today you can't. Dean and I came and met here in the middle so that we could film here because it's beautiful.

01:39 Dean Newcomb: This does look like California. Yeah, right? A lot of the ocean county, OC, right?

01:52 John Daub: From Tokyo to shoot here because it looks like you're in California, which is exotic for them. Super exotic. And this way too, because this is where we parked the car. These are not normal apartments. They're all second houses. Look at that. I can't believe we're in Japan. This is bizarre. Lee Richard writes in, this looks like Miami. How you doing, everybody?

02:34 John Daub: I do like it here. I'm actually just here for about 45 minutes and we filmed the scene and now I'm going to be driving back to Tokyo. I only have the car for less than six hours. It's pretty quick here. Not a lot of people, but we do have to take some precautions. Oh, that's the marina, where all the rich Tokyoites have a boat down here.

03:12 Dean Newcomb: Are they only in Japan though?

03:15 John Daub: Yeah, that would be pretty cool. If everybody can quickly throw some money in the pot, John can get his own Only in Japan yacht, and then we can go all the way around Japan.

03:27 Dean Newcomb: Go around the world? We only need about $5 million, something like that.

03:29 John Daub: That would be a lot of fun actually, just to circumnavigate Japan. More realistically, they'll give you a kayak or a paddle board and it will be a bit more of an adventure. That sounds up your alley, Runaway Japan. Kayaker. Oh, so this is the marina, right?

03:47 Dean Newcomb: Yeah, look at this. Let's take a look at the sign here.

03:51 John Daub: Interesting. There's a restaurant. It looks pretty pricey here. I'm not gonna have time to eat. Established 1971. Older than me. Let's show everybody a beautiful view. I don't have a lot of time, but it's nice to show a little bit of California. How do people like that? We got a lot of Californians watching because it's getting close to midnight over there. A lot of people are surprised. Some people in Miami said this looks like Miami. Imagine this view with loads of people in kimono walking by. We need some kimono here.

04:47 Dean Newcomb: Nice Malibu farm.

05:03 John Daub: This is really a treat. I needed this scene and I decided to come here last night. I called Dean. He said, what are you doing tomorrow? So I'll meet you halfway. How about sushi? And that's cool. They put solar power. Wow, look at these yachts. Nice, huh? That's such a piece. Oh, this one here, the catamaran. Huge.

05:42 Dean Newcomb: I was in the sailing club at Ohio State University. They call me the capsize king because I was really good at capsizing. But I was really good at flipping the boats back over.

05:55 John Daub: Hey, from Chicago, the Windy City. I know it's really cold in Chicago. Wow, this is beautiful. There's a pool over there. Look at that. It's hot enough that people are outside doing coffee time. This is so California. All we need is some of those characters. Do you remember Ryan, Seth? Do you ever watch The OC?

06:34 Dean Newcomb: No.

06:34 John Daub: Really? You look like you could be in it. Did anybody ever see it? It's one of the best, especially the first two seasons. It got a little freaky. I love the music. It gets a little freaky in the third and fourth season of The OC. I think it's available on Amazon Prime. It's not on Netflix that I know of in Japan.

07:17 Dean Newcomb: We're going to take a look at the Pacific Ocean. If you're in the United States and you're looking the other direction, we are waving at you. If you're in California on the beach, John and Dean are waving at you from the other side.

07:36 John Daub: Is that safe? Really? I know it's so clear. I really want to jump in, Dean. No fishes. The water here is beautiful, but that is crazy. Now, Mount Fuji. You see some fish? They're like yellow and black striped. That's like a parrotfish. So Mount Fuji would be that direction. That's Enoshima over there. Enoshima is right there. And if I pan over to the right here over these spikes that are meant to keep us out. Enoshima and then Mount Fuji would be right there. But I can see it.

08:46 Dean Newcomb: Oh yeah, look at Enoshima and then look up and you can see it.

08:51 John Daub: Can you see Mount Fuji? It's so hazy, but you can see the whole thing. Do you see the top of it? It's so hard to see. You could see the top of Fuji. It's massive, just towering over. Okay, there it is. It's very hard to see. It's right in the center of your screen, very light, like the outline of the top of Mount Fuji. Barely. Now you can see it. So even on a blue sky, sunny day like today, Mount Fuji is hidden because of the haze because it is too warm. This is Zushi Beach here. Do you see I'm panning towards Zushi Beach down there?

09:46 Dean Newcomb: I think it's Kamakura.

09:48 John Daub: But it's a beautiful place. This, I guess we would call this Tokyo's beach town because Tokyo in itself doesn't really have a beach town like this. A lot of Tokyoites come here to hit the beach. You could just jump on a train one line and get all the way from the city to here. Just get off at the other side and you're in either Kamakura or Zushi.

10:15 Dean Newcomb: If we do this in terms of Philadelphia, where one of the places where I grew up, this would be like Long Beach Island in New Jersey. You have to drive a little bit to get to the coast from Philadelphia. This is like LBI. Good memories there.

10:49 John Daub: All right, folks, that's about it for me. I got to get out of here. That's your view though. Yeah, that's a really great view. And it's nice to learn a little bit about this area. Again, Dean's channel has Runaway. You had some content coming. In fact, you're uploading a video. I get a video to upload on the new channel. I guess I'm going to do it Sunday morning here, which is Saturday night in the US.

11:11 Dean Newcomb: My video is done.

11:13 John Daub: How's yours? I'm going to try to release it at exactly the time so that they can enjoy your video. Watch mine. And I will have some behind the scenes of John doing all kinds of things that you would normally see. It's about drinking tea in Mount Fuji. And Dean and I rode our bicycles around the area of Fujisan. Drinking tea. It's pretty cool.

11:55 Dean Newcomb: It's a hard life, isn't it? Riding bikes, drinking tea.

11:57 John Daub: Well, it wasn't an easy one. That was a tough shoot because we didn't have the weather that we have today. Check it out. Do you come to this area often?

12:07 Dean Newcomb: I do. Yeah, I'm pretty familiar with this. It started way back 10 years ago, coming here for model work. And now I like it. So if I get the time, I'll just come down here to chill and catch some rays, even in the middle of winter. Chillax.

12:25 John Daub: I think the last time I was here was two or three years ago. I don't come here that often, which is a shame. But now that I have a license, coming here by train is not the same as driving down here. I think you really need to drive. But you can. There are trains. In fact, there's a Zushi line. The Sobu line that connects between Chiba and Zushi. Trains are really convenient to get here. But if you want to get around once you're here, if you want to jump around and see lots of different things, then the car's nice. Gives you that freedom. But obviously not everybody will be able to rent a car, but it's pretty easy. You just get on the train, get off at the other side, and you're like 10 minutes walk from the beach. And not just the beach. Kamakura has a lot of history. There's so much here. I am angry at myself because I want to stay here longer. I don't want to be in the center of the city today on a day like this. But I got to get back and edit.

14:33 Dean Newcomb: I do not do Discord.

14:34 John Daub: No, really? You need a Runaway Discord server. Everybody's getting one now.

14:39 Dean Newcomb: I'm kind of behind the times. Just getting into YouTube. Did you upload the Kyoto video already?

14:47 John Daub: God, please go and have a look because you're going to like it. It's called the Kyoto Trail and it's in three parts. Really long, three videos, 20 minutes each. Another side of Kyoto. And then there's a special guest, a 79-year-old hiker. I've got Keiji there, my stepson who's seven, and then I've got a 79-year-old man who's leading the way. And he's amazing. He's such an inspiration.

15:13 Dean Newcomb: Speaking of Keiji, is he around here?

15:15 John Daub: Keiji.

15:26 Dean Newcomb: It's Keiji. Runaway Japan's second member at the moment.

15:34 John Daub: How you doing, Keiji?

15:36 Keiji: I'm doing good.

15:37 John Daub: How old are you now, 24? Well, I see a beard coming on.

15:43 Dean Newcomb: Keiji's very good at making friends. Yeah, made a friend real fast.

15:51 John Daub: Keiji, what video did we just upload?

15:55 Keiji: Kyoto Trail on Runaway Japan.

16:01 John Daub: I'll put a link in the description. Japan's youngest. I got to run. I got to drive back to Tokyo. I got an hour and a half drive back from me. Anything that you want to say to the 621 people that are watching, Keiji?

16:17 Keiji: I'm excited to hear what you're going to say.

16:46 John Daub: His English is better than ours. I guess you can leave a message for Keiji as well on the Runaway channel. I'm sure both of them will be reviewing the comments tonight. I'll get Keiji to answer it.

17:04 Dean Newcomb: Thanks, John. Nice to see you again.

17:06 John Daub: Great to see everybody again. Dean will be in an episode this weekend that I'm uploading onto the Only in Japan main channel, and you can see his version of the same trip we did coming this weekend too on Runaway Japan, a nice collaboration. Keiji was not there though, but he's all over the Runaway Japan channel. He's the star at the moment. And I'm sure we'll be doing something else real soon, especially if the weather is this nice. We should have planned something more.

17:38 Dean Newcomb: All right. Bye, everybody.

17:39 John Daub: See ya. We got some comments here. Everyone's starting to get the notification. Oh, look at this, everybody. Chicago Africans, go get a snack. Oh, I guess I'll have to stop off at the rest area on the way back. Maybe another live stream. Bye, everybody. See ya.
