00:12 John Daub: Alright, so this is a typical 7-Eleven iced coffee vending machine. It's now brewing the coffee right here. How you doing everybody? Oh, there it comes! This is a normal coffee, and I need this as a base to understand how good or how bad what we're going to try today is. Done. Grab a lid.
01:00 John Daub: Welcome to Tokyo! How you doing everybody? Today I'm going to be tasting a new coffee that is bizarre. And I wanted to start by getting a regular coffee. This is Kanae's drink. Here you are. And this is my drink right here. Boom! Check it out.
01:22 John Daub: This is the Cold Brew UCC Coffee Lemonade. I don't know why they put lemonade in there. Maybe it's a summer thing. It can't be good. Lemonade coffee. It really does say that right there. I guess it's sweet? What do you guys think? How much lemon juice is in there? Well, we're going to discover this all in this very short live stream here. I don't need to take 20 minutes to drink a coffee, although I probably could.
01:53 John Daub: How you doing everybody? I'm going to put my iced coffee there, and we're going to try something silly. Kanae and Leo are right there, but it's just us today. Happy Father's Day to all the fathers out there. We're in Ginza Ichome (1st block) right now, and this is where we're going to be doing some shopping and strolling. Ginza is a perfect place to go for a stroll. And before we do that, let's try this coffee.
02:20 John Daub: Now, I bought that iced coffee right there, and I brought a lime with me to try. That is the errand buggy back there, by the way, everybody. So let's give this a try. This is so bizarre. It's weird because it hits you on so many different parts of the tongue. There's a generic sweetness in there. It doesn't taste like lemonade. It's like a very subtle lemon sweet. You don't want to overpower the coffee, but you have that very acidic coffee taste to it. So it hits you on so many parts of the tongue. There's a sour tanginess to it. It's not bad, but I'd rather have regular coffee. I drink coffee because I like the grit, you know what I mean? But it's pretty good.
03:31 John Daub: Now, I'm going to be doing my own weird experiment. Michael's in the house. How are you doing? This is mostly for a sweet snack to go with the coffee. I bought Kanae a burrito last time, and that was really good. This time, we're going to get her something really nice in Ginza. Happy first Father's Day, WX Turbo. Father's Day, right? I didn't expect this a year ago. Drinks for the whole family. Thanks, Steven. Franz Hopper and Elvis Camera, hi. Happy Father's Day. Happy fourth birthday to Ziarra. It's the Z family. Hi to Kanae and Rio. Happy birthday again, Ziarra.
04:22 John Daub: All right. We're in a corner in Ginza. This is as real as it gets. I'm going to put my mask away. I can't just try this and end the live stream because a lot of you will be tuning in over the next five minutes. Kanae and I are going to do a little bit of shopping today. But I brought a lime with me. This is just a sick experiment. Thanks for the Father's Day wishes. Happy Father's Day from me, from our family, especially to all you fathers, especially first-time fathers staying up all night while your wife sleeps. Love the family.
05:06 John Daub: This is the normal 7-Eleven coffee. It's very good. They grind the beans right there, and you saw it drip into the plastic container with the ice already in it. Now I'm going to add some lime to it. I don't know why I'm doing this. I'm doing it because you have to be bold, people. I didn't have any lemons, so I figured maybe lime is better. I'm doing this for science. So it's lime cold coffee versus the UCC cold brew lemonade. I got to mix it up a little bit. It's like cocktail hour.
06:03 John Daub: Let's try this again. Sweet. Some citrus on one side. Bitterness on the other. Refreshing. Now John's homemade lime coffee. It's nasty. That's nasty. I think you need scientists to literally take samples and come up with some kind of cocktail. It just tastes like citrus in coffee. Maybe it needs sugar. James Boardman's right. Nostrad Brad writes, leave it to the experts. I think that might be the right way to go.
06:55 John Daub: So my experiment failed. Don't do this. It's not the same. The cold brew coffee is too acidic and the lime is too much citrus. So there's some sort of balance that's needed. Maybe salt, maybe sugar. We're in Ginza Ichome (1st block). We're going to go shopping a little bit. Big shout out: I do think UCC innovating is pretty cool. UCC is the company that brought in the K-Cups, and K-Cups never took off in Japan. They have a very poor selection. Probably a good thing because all those plastic capsules—you could probably go around the earth ten times with the amount teachers drink in the U.S. I was a substitute teacher. They always had K-Cups and would go through boxes of them just to stay caffeinated.
08:05 John Daub: UCC is finding new ways to innovate. UCC is one of the biggest coffee companies, and I believe they own something ridiculous like 70% of the Blue Mountain Coffee in Jamaica, which is one of the most expensive cultivars of coffee. Like UCC knows what they're doing. I guess they bought it in the bubble era of the 1980s.
08:31 John Daub: That's all I wanted to show you. My final thoughts: it's a good coffee. I'd rather have normal coffee, but I'm not going to complain. I don't usually have sugar in my coffee, so this is a little bit sweet. But it's something I would try once, maybe twice. Here's the clincher for me: these kinds of cold coffees and PET bottles are usually not that good. They don't taste as good as one of these fresh brews from 7-Eleven, which is 100 yen. So to compete, they need something like this. And it is a little bit tastier with something else in it, which you can do in a PET bottle. I think they succeeded because they found a way to make something interesting with PET bottle coffee. Even canned coffee is more for the caffeine than the taste, but they do a pretty good job.
09:36 John Daub: David Lee, happy Father's Day. David in Hong Kong, thank you, my friend. Scotty H, enjoy your beautiful family. There's the little guy right there. He's getting a hug. Say hello to Leo. Here's Leo. Hey, Leo. He hasn't actually been in a live stream. This is maybe the first time. Leo, you're on world TV in a live stream, buddy. One day you'll have kids too, fingers crossed. DC in Singapore, we still use that Mamaroo jumper you got us. Thanks, Diana. Happy Father's Day, Papa John. Queen of Tacos, happy Father's Day. A little something for little Leo. We're going to a couple of stores to see what we can find for him, maybe get him some clothes.
11:10 John Daub: Babies have a 100-day anniversary, so we're preparing for that. We have a special meal. We're going to get a kimono, get a photograph. I'll see if I can share it with you, maybe even bring you with me if everything is cool. But we decided not to put Leo on social media too much. We kind of let him be himself. Thanks so much. TDSDR, hey, Leo. Happy Father's Day. Leo is not a father yet, although if you count his plushies, in a way he kind of is. Jennifer French, thanks. You guys are great.
11:52 John Daub: All right, everybody. Just wanted to say goodbye. Kanae and I are going to make the rest of the day family time. There's the errand buggy. Just nice to share a little bit of it with you with a little bit of coffee. Chase Yu, here's a little love from Hong Kong to baby Leo. Look at him. He's so cute, even though he kept me up really late at night. It's okay. It's all worth it.
12:19 John Daub: Final note: if you are in Japan, it's worth trying the Cold Brew Coffee Lemonade by UCC. You can get them not at vending machines, although they probably will be in them soon. I got this at Lawson's. It's about 130 yen. Thanks, everybody. Have a good day, have a good night wherever you are in the world. Bye from Ginza Ichome (1st block) on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. Happy Father's Day to all the fathers out there in the world. Much love from us in Tokyo.
