Tokyo 3x3 Basketball and Gundam Area during the Olympics
Tokyo 3x3 Basketball and Gundam Area during the Olympics
Overview
In this live stream from July 2021, John Daub explores the Tokyo Waterfront City area during the 2020 Olympics (held in 2021). Despite the global event, the streets are surprisingly deserted due to pandemic restrictions and an inbound typhoon. John visits the iconic massive Mobile Suit Gundam statue, hoping to catch its hourly show, and walks past the sealed-off 3x3 Basketball venue where Japan is competing against Italy.
The video captures the unique atmosphere of the Olympics under emergency restrictions—venues are visible but inaccessible, and crowds are absent. John shares historical context about the area, including the Daiba battery islands and Commodore Perry's "Black Ships," while pointing out landmarks like the Fuji TV building, the Hilton (where NBC is broadcasting), and the Statue of Liberty replica. The stream concludes with anticipation for a discussion with Peter von Gomm about the opening ceremony.

Japan Travel Tips
- Odaiba Access: Take the Yurikamome (automated guideway transit line) for scenic views leading to the waterfront.
- Gundam Statue: Located in Odaiba; typically performs a short show on the hour with lights and movement.
- Olympic Venues: During the 2020 Olympics, many venues were closed to the public due to pandemic restrictions. Expect barriers and security even if events are happening inside.
- Best Sunset Spot: The waterfront area near the Rainbow Bridge offers excellent sunset views; John notes it as a great date spot.
- Connectivity: 5G/4G signal can be spotty in crowded or specific waterfront areas despite infrastructure upgrades.
- Vending Machines: Look for unique drinks like "Espresso deep taste" on Olympic-themed machines.
Japanese Language & Culture Notes
- Yurikamome (ゆりかもめ): The automated guideway transit line serving the Tokyo waterfront. The name means "seagull."
- Daiba (台場): Refers to the artificial islands in Tokyo Bay. Historically built as battery fortifications to protect Edo (Tokyo) from foreign ships (like Commodore Perry's).
- Olympics 2020: Held in 2021 due to the pandemic. John notes the low ratings and absence of spectators compared to typical Olympic fervor.
- Commodore Perry: Referenced regarding the "Black Ships" (kurofune) that arrived in 1853, leading to the opening of Japan. The cannons on Daiba were intended to defend against them.
Food & Drink Guide
- Espresso (Vending Machine): 18:11 John finds a machine offering "Espresso deep taste." He jokes about how "deep" the taste might be (water polo deep).
- Water (Vending Machine): 16:43 John buys water from an Olympic-themed vending machine featuring a beach volleyball jingle.
People
- John Daub: Host and narrator. Walking the waterfront, providing commentary on the Olympics, Gundam, and local history.
- Peter von Gomm: John's friend and fellow American in Japan. Mentioned as the voice heard during the Olympic opening ceremony moment of silence; scheduled to appear on a later livestream.
- Kanae Daub: John's wife. Mentioned regarding a past date at this location.
- Lester Holt: NBC Nightly News anchor. Mentioned as broadcasting from the Hilton Tokyo Odaiba during the Olympics.
- Naomi Osaka: Mentioned as the athlete who lit the Olympic cauldron during the opening ceremony.
- Nasha Brouard: Community moderator mentioned in relation to the upcoming livestream.
Key Takeaways
- The 2020 Olympics in Tokyo had a surreal atmosphere with empty streets and restricted access due to the pandemic and typhoon warnings.
- The Gundam statue in Odaiba remains a major attraction, performing hourly shows even during low-attendance periods.
- Many Olympic venues (3x3 Basketball, Beach Volleyball) were visible but inaccessible to the general public.
- The Tokyo Waterfront City area holds significant historical value regarding Japan's opening to the West (Commodore Perry).

Full Transcript
00:06 John Daub: Greetings everybody, welcome to the city of Tokyo. This in front of us is a massive Mobile Suit Gundam. I don't even know how you pronounce it exactly—Gundam, depends where you're from and if you follow Gundam. But look at him, an imposing figure. Oh, the power. If only one person were brave enough to climb into the cockpit and drive him up into the sky and prevent the typhoon inbound to Tokyo from making any impact in the city. We could totally count on Mobile Suit Gundam. Except there's nobody here to do that. It's just me and a couple of stragglers.
00:51 John Daub: Actually, this is insane. During the Olympics, I thought that this place would be completely filled with spectators, people taking pictures, enjoying the beauty of Japanese art. But we don't have it at all. It's a shame. Across the way, for those that are joining us, this is a busted live stream. I walked from the Olympic cauldron, which is the flame from the Olympic ceremony, has been moved to this part of the city of Tokyo Waterfront City. This place is sort of abandoned. But that across the street is the three-on-three basketball competition. And apparently Japan is playing right now. That's the venue for the Olympic three-on-three basketball, which is pretty cool. And apparently we can't enter.
02:03 John Daub: It is really weird to see the venue pretty empty. You can hear the speakers, the announcers, saying the score every now and then. Score check. Japan 22, Italy 10. Go Japan. So that's happening inside of there right now. You know, if Japan were to channel Mobile Suit Gundam just across the way, I bet you they could win pretty easy. Just pass it to Gundam and he can just... He doesn't even have to jump, I don't think.
02:38 John Daub: But the reason for this live stream, besides the fact that it was busted, I wanted to end this live stream, take it a little bit around this area because I know a lot of you are fans of Gundam over here. And this is pretty much going to be a short live stream. Edo is here. Hey Edo! I see the Dutch team is doing pretty good here. I saw a Dutch skateboarder, although she fell down, but nice to see Holland being represented in a lot of events here. There's a little bit of wind. It's overcast right now. A lot of it is because there is a typhoon inbound that's supposed to hit tomorrow. And I don't know how it's going to hit the city of Tokyo, but sure made an impact out on the islands on the way in.
03:29 John Daub: This way takes you to the Olympic Cauldron. It's about a 10-15 minute walk. And we did that together. There are social distancing rules in place. There are people holding signs for you to social distance, so make sure you listen to them. Alright, okay, we got some maps here. I thought this was a place where you can get doggy doo doo bags or something, but no, it's about maps. Please take one. Oh, so this tells you about the area. Whoa! It's all off limits! The whole beach is off limits. Look at that! I'm taking this. Alright, let's get moving.
04:34 John Daub: Oh Johnny, that's awful news. It's blurry. I'm now in everybody's pictures. I'm walking straight through. Which you actually can do, so it's not like I'm breaking any social norms. Alright, this is the 40 years of Gundam right there. It's pretty sweet. Can't see his head. Okay, I'm panning up. Hopefully the signal is better than Minecraft. I can get even closer, I think. Hey Ian, thank you! Ian writes in, so empty. It is. Pretty powerful pose. Again, if just one individual out of this group could jump in there and get in that suit and turn it on just for a little bit, I would be so appreciative. Anybody.
05:37 John Daub: See, we don't got enough people here. Usually if the crowd is louder, oh there's a YouTuber. Getting reports that it's all blurry here. Sorry about that, I'm moving backwards. Casually stand in front of the camera. John, you just got upskirted Gundam. Oh, sterilize your hands. I was pretty close to this statue. Maybe he does need to be charged. I think he does move on the hour. He puts on a little show. Some steam comes out. There is some movement, which is pretty awesome. But, again, if somebody could just be brave enough to jump on that suit and get in there and turn it on. And help us eradicate the typhoon that's inbound. I would be very appreciative.
06:51 John Daub: What's a YouTuber? There she is again. I don't think that tripod's gonna last in the wind, lady. That tripod, ma'am, excuse me, you're gonna lose your camera for sure. We're gonna film it. There's no way that tripod stays upright. It's really windy. Maybe she's watching. She's got an umbrella. She's stepping on her tripod to keep it from flying away. It's a dead zone for live streaming. I don't think I'm gonna be able to get a picture. But there's, I don't know how she's gonna be able to take her video.
07:42 John Daub: Alright, you know what? I'm not gonna stand here and watch someone destroy their equipment. Keep on going. It is very deserted. Oh! Oh, wait! What time is it, everybody? Somebody tell me the time. I think something's happening. That's why she's got the camera out. Oh, dude, you're in for a treat! Some guy just got in. It's on! It's flashing! Oh, this is awesome!
08:32 John Daub: Turn the mic around. You don't want to listen to me screaming. Oh, wait, this is all copyrighted music! Copyrighted music, blah blah blah. I don't want to be part of this. No! Stop the copyrighted music! Play something else! Play something. All right, I got to do it play by play now to get over the copyrighted music. His face just opened up. Oh, it's flashing like a traffic stop. All right, move the arms a little bit. That's it? Oh, he closed up. That's it.
09:44 John Daub: The people are a little disappointed. People are waiting for more. Everyone's got their phones out. They're still waiting. They don't understand that it's over. All right, a couple of smart people got the hint. Why do they got to play that copyrighted music? Can't they come up with something that's royalty free for everybody? Really, Gundam? All right, I'm taking away from this side. We're going to walk towards the Hilton. There is another event going on here. I'm not sure exactly what it is, but straight ahead, you see some tents kind of in the distance there. Those are related to the 2020 Olympics. I'm not sure what it is, so let's go take a closer look.
10:43 John Daub: I mean, I think that that's kind of disappointing. If you sit there and you wait for a couple of hours just for that, I think it's something that you just got to get lucky. Blurry tents, right? I apologize. Let's see if we can get a better signal. All right, move ahead. The top, you can see that there's constant security walking around this area. Yeah, it is probably better at night. This is the largest golden toothpick in the world. It might be gum. It's a goddamn spear. You could take that and use it as a weapon, javelin or something. They're playing like old songs from the 1990s. I love it at the three-on-three basketball. A lot of C+C Music Factory going on. Don't know what this event is here, but there's something going on in those tents.
12:05 John Daub: Straight ahead, you can see the Rainbow Bridge with Tokyo Tower. We were just here about a week ago, a little less than a week ago, just before the opening ceremony. 22nd, I think. I did a live stream from here showing you the sunset, which was gorgeous. This is the best spot for the sunset in the city of Tokyo. Most likely, there's probably others. And I think this would be the best date spot as well if you're coming here to hold hands with somebody. Kanae and I had our second date here. I shouldn't say that. Now, you know all my history. That's kind of scary. It wasn't our first. I can't remember. I think it was second or third. One of the first three.
12:50 John Daub: This is the 5G network. Probably all the signal being siphoned off by the big massive blur in front of you, which is the Fuji TV building. I do apologize. I did think that the signal was going to be better. I'm just disappointed in the city because apparently there isn't any 4G in some spots. 5G, I thought, would be all over the city. They had an extra year to get in more 5G, right? Imagine if they held this last year. They wouldn't have been ready. If we're having 5G failure at venues, imagine what it would have been like a year ago.
13:56 John Daub: So once again, at 11 p.m. tonight, Peter von Gomm, the voice of the Olympic opening ceremony, one of the voices, who spoke for a few minutes, less than IOC President Bach but more than the emperor, is going to be with us tonight as a guest at 11 p.m. on this channel right here. 11 p.m. JST, which is 10 a.m. on the East Coast, 7 a.m. in California, which means our moderator, Nasha Brouard, will be asleep. Peter did speak at the opening ceremony. He talked about the moment of silence and the people that we lost during the Olympics. That was his voice. You all know that it was him. Everybody who's ever watched this channel knows that that was Peter because you can just tell. It's like the voice is infamous. Notorious. I put on Instagram, it might not be there anymore, the entire, or at least a part of it, a minute and a half of Peter speaking to 1.8 billion people watching around the world. It's just a shame that the ratings were the lowest in the history of the Olympics for that opening ceremony, that they've been taking the measurements for audiences. It's sort of a disappointment.
15:26 John Daub: There's the Hilton right there. That's where NBC Nightly News is being broadcast every night now. Lester Holt's in the house over there. I wonder what he's talking about. Maybe eating a late lunch or he's got jet lag and asleep right now before the nightly news or the morning news. Not sure which. That's pretty cool because whenever I see the news from the U.S. being broadcast, I know exactly where it's from. It's the balcony of the Hilton, which is pretty cool. So if you come to Tokyo, you should call up Hilton and go, give me Lester Holt's room. See if he destroyed it or something. It's in immaculate shape, probably a suite. I know that our son Leo likes Lester. Whenever it's on in the background, it's running through the YouTube on our TV. Seems to get a little burst of energy from that. I don't know why.
16:43 John Daub: Che writes in here, why am I still doing this at 2 a.m.? It's because you are in Tokyo right now. Oh, please, water. Oh, it's a little bit cheaper here, too. That's brilliant. Oh, this Olympic vending machine did a little jingle. Beach volleyball machine. Oh, my gosh. I'm so dry. That's a long walk. It's curious. Why is this machine all out of service? It's the whole backside is out of service. That is the Yurikamome (automated guideway transit line).
18:11 John Daub: Well, very astute, Mr. Said. I was curious about this. They actually, oh, it says here. I thought it was heated, but it's not heated. They have an espresso coffee shot break. Looks like I could use that, but. What is it? Deep taste. Espresso deep taste. Whoa. How deep? I'm kind of curious now. How deep is that espresso taste? What do you think? I don't know how deep it is. It's probably too deep. It's water polo deep. You can't touch the bottom. So deep. It's like everyone's got some knuckles deep. What does that mean? Energized drink. That was funny. I'm going to walk out here and see if we can see the Olympic rings and tie a ribbon on this.
19:13 John Daub: Boy, they got Toys R Us here. And a One Piece shop. That's pretty cool. Get some deep coffee, writes in Joshua. All right, Joshua. I'll go and do it. It's because you said so. There are the Olympic rings over there. Hey, they're actually in Olympic colors. That's what you see on the news every night. The international media has to have this backdrop stolen by the international media. It's okay. This is the beach volleyball venue and you can't see squat because on the triathlon. So they are holding the triathlon here. See you, Jody. Thanks for tuning in, buddy. Yeah. You know, beyond the Statue of Liberty is where the triathlon is going to be held. The swimming portion, I believe. And then the beach volleyball. But you can't see squat. They can see squat. They're volunteers, though. It's not fair. It's all closed off. Even across the island.
20:27 John Daub: That's the, where the cannons were set up for when Commodore Perry returned to Tokyo. They were going to shoot down his black boat. But I think the damage is already done by then. That's the Battery Island, Daiba Park across there. So you can still see the cannons that are on that island getting ready to shoot the black ship. But Commodore Perry is not there. Commodore Perry is a pretty slick guy. He knew what he was doing. You can't even go there unless you got a parachute or something. Your own boat. I wonder if a space boat comes here. Oh, space boat would be the only way in, maybe. I don't even know if a space boat can come in here. I got to go check this out. This would be big news. This is a Statue of Liberty replica. It's like one tenth the size. It's still pretty cool.
21:16 John Daub: All right, everybody. It was a lot of fun. Jody went to bed, so that means we're going to have to put this to sleep, too. Thanks, everybody, for watching. I hope that this was enjoyable. You got a chance to see Gundam and a little bit of the waterfront area that is somewhat abandoned. But, you know, maybe for the Paralympics, things will change. Things will open up. If you missed it, I actually walked to the Olympic Cauldron where the torch is. Sorry, where the torch was lit in the opening ceremony by Naomi Osaka. That's been moved to here, the waterfront. And you can come here and take pictures. I started the last livestream about an hour ago right there. So you can go check that out in the playback. See you, everybody. Have a good day. Have a good night from Tokyo. I'll see you at 11 p.m. tonight when Peter and I discuss the opening ceremony in a studio livestream. And maybe we'll do some Twitch. Catch you on Discord.
