Summary

Hokkaido SEICO MART Motorcycle Stop Lake Toya

Overview

In this episode of Only in Japan Go, John Daub and his friend Peter von Gomm (PBG) take a break during their motorcycle tour of Hokkaido. They stop at a Seiko Mart (セイコーマート), a convenience store chain unique to Hokkaido, to hydrate and grab supplies near Lake Toya. The video highlights the regional differences in Japanese convenience stores, the specific gear used for motorcycle touring, and the beauty of Hokkaido's summer landscape.

John and Peter discuss their crowdfunding campaign for a documentary series, outlining stretch goals that involve jumping into Lake Akan and visiting an onsen (hot spring) in Wakkanai. They explore the Mizuno Eki (water station), a waterfront variation of the typical Michi no Eki (road station), where locals and tourists enjoy street food like kakigori (shaved ice) and yakisoba (fried noodles). The episode blends travel vlog elements with candid conversations about riding safety, hydration, and the joy of exploring Japan's northern island on two wheels.

Timeline / Chapters

Japan Travel Tips

  • Seiko Mart: This convenience store chain is primarily found in Hokkaido. It's a great place to find local products and hot foods distinct from national chains like 7-Eleven or Lawson.
  • Hydration: In summer, sports drinks like Pocari Sweat and Aquarius are essential for replenishing salts lost through sweating, especially when riding motorcycles.
  • Mask Etiquette: Even outdoors or in less crowded areas, wearing a mask when entering stores is considered polite, especially for visitors from outside the region.
  • Michi no Eki: Look for road stations (Michi no Eki) or water stations (Mizuno Eki) for local produce, souvenirs, and food stalls. They often allow overnight parking for RVs.
  • Motorcycle Gear: Proper boots (like Kushitani) with shifting pads and ventilation are crucial for comfort and safety on long rides.
  • Cash: While cards are accepted in many places, smaller food stalls (yatai) at road stations may prefer cash (e.g., 100 yen for edamame).

Japanese Language & Culture Notes

  • Seiko Mart (セイコーマート): A Hokkaido-based convenience store chain. Unlike national chains, it often features local Hokkaido products and hot food counters.
  • Michi no Eki (道の駅): Government-designated road stations that serve as rest areas, often selling local produce. Mizuno Eki (水の駅) is a playful variation for waterfront locations.
  • Yukata (浴衣): A casual summer kimono often worn at festivals or hot spring towns. Seen on children eating shaved ice at the lake.
  • Onsen (温泉): Japanese hot springs. John and Peter joke about an "oil onsen" stretch goal for their documentary.
  • Kakigori (かき氷): Shaved ice dessert, popular in summer.
  • Yakisoba (焼きそば): Fried noodles, a common street food staple.
  • Takoyaki (たこ焼き): Ball-shaped snacks filled with octopus, often sold at festivals.

Food & Drink Guide

  • Pocari Sweat (ポカリスエット): 00:04:22 Ion supply drink. John recommends it for replenishing summer sweats.
  • Aquarius (アクエリアス): 00:04:37 Another sports drink option, noted as half-price at the time.
  • Georgia Coffee (ジョージア): 00:06:02 Canned black coffee. John grabs a "Sweet Georgia" small can.
  • Chocolate Croissant: 00:07:08 Pastry available at Seiko Mart.
  • Melon Cream Milk: 00:05:12 Observed in the fridge, joked about fermenting in the stomach.
  • Kakigori (かき氷): 00:19:38 Shaved ice being made at the Mizuno Eki stall.
  • Edamame (枝豆): 00:19:29 Boiled soybeans sold for 100 yen at the stall.
  • Yakisoba (焼きそば): 00:19:15 Fried noodles available at the food stall.
  • Sapporo Beer: 00:03:55 Mentioned as a classic Hokkaido beer to enjoy later (not while driving).

People

  • John Daub: Host and creator of Only in Japan Go. American living in Japan for 30+ years. Riding a Honda 400X.
  • Peter von Gomm (PBG): John's friend and fellow American living in Japan. Master rider, riding a Yamaha Tracer 900. Provides commentary on riding gear and safety.
  • Yamamoto-san: Cameraman for the documentary. Mentioned as hiding from the shot and needing water.
  • Leo: John's son. Mentioned in conversation regarding the origin of his name (named after a family dog).
  • Vaughn: Briefly greeted in the parking lot, likely a crew member or friend.
  • Carl, Tomohisa, Matsumi: Backers mentioned during the livestream who supported the documentary crowdfunding campaign.

Key Takeaways

  • Regional Convenience Stores: Hokkaido's Seiko Mart offers a unique alternative to national chains, often with better hot food options and local products.
  • Motorcycle Touring: Proper hydration and gear (boots, ventilation) are critical for comfort and safety on long rides in summer heat.
  • Crowdfunding Community: The documentary project relies on backer support, with fun stretch goals incentivizing contributions (e.g., jumping into Lake Akan).
  • Roadside Stations: Michi no Eki and Mizuno Eki are excellent stops for experiencing local food culture and scenery without leaving the road.
  • Hokkaido Climate: Summer in Hokkaido is less humid than Tokyo but still hot; the dry heat can lead to dehydration if not managed.

Notable Quotes

  • 00:00:32 Peter von Gomm: "Not three times." (Regarding falling off his motorcycle)
  • 00:02:08 John Daub: "And I feel like a baller in Hokkaido."
  • 00:03:34 Peter von Gomm: "Hey, Nagoya John, baller in Hokkaido. It should be the name of the documentary."
  • 00:09:51 Peter von Gomm: "No, you're not. You drive a bicycle." (Debating ride vs. drive terminology)
  • 00:10:16 John Daub: "Is that a coffee in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?"
  • 00:17:40 Peter von Gomm: "You're like a Toyoko ninja."
  • 00:29:17 John Daub: "Tokyo sizzles you and it mugs you. Because that's why they call it muggy, because you get mugged."

00:00:00 John Daub: Hello everybody. Greetings and welcome to Seiko Mart, which is a great Hokkaido institution. This convenience store, I don't think you can find it away from the island of Hokkaido. There might be a few in Tohoku, but for us, it's a savior because we are so thirsty. We want cold water. There's a post office behind me and next to the post office is this guy, Peter von Gomm, otherwise known as PBG. Master rider, never falls on his motorcycle. Not twice.

00:00:32 Peter von Gomm: Not three times.

00:01:05 John Daub: I thought this was for pencils and notes, but it's actually just for air. That's pretty cool. Air vent on the front, so there's two zippers, one to let no air and the other one to let the air in. That's a pretty ingenious design.

00:01:23 John Daub: Basically, we're swagged out. Shout out to Kushitani as well as 819 for the motorcycles.

00:01:31 Peter von Gomm: Yeah, rental 819.

00:01:32 John Daub: You'll see that. You probably saw that in one of the other live streams. That's our motorcycle rental outfit that has shops all over the country.

00:01:43 Peter von Gomm: John has the Honda 400X. How are you liking it?

00:01:49 John Daub: It rides pretty smooth. I'm happy with it. It's got enough power. I don't know why you need to have a bigger bike. 400cc is enough to really get around. I bet you in a year or two, I probably want something bigger.

00:02:00 Peter von Gomm: I recommend something smaller.

00:02:02 John Daub: Hey, hey. Based on your track record. Hey.

00:02:04 Peter von Gomm: And I have the Tracer 900, which I am loving.

00:02:08 John Daub: It is a nice looking bike. I love that purple trim on it. It's made for someone who knows what they're doing. Well, it's not just nice looking, but it's nice riding. And it's set the position. I don't feel any fatigue at all. Plenty of power. And I feel like a baller in Hokkaido.

00:02:26 Peter von Gomm: I feel like any bike would make me feel pretty special. I just finished motorcycle school, so I'm pretty happy with whatever I could have gotten that will allow me on the highway.

00:02:39 John Daub: Down the road here is Lake Toya. So let's go into the convenience store. And if there's some time, I'll take you down here. But here's a quick look. And the center of it is an island right in the center. It's pretty cool. There's a museum on there. And there might even be some accommodations.

00:02:57 John Daub: So I guess we can go inside. I did have a mask because, you know, even though...

00:03:01 Peter von Gomm: Yeah, I don't need to tell you why we need to wear masks here in Hokkaido being outsiders. It's just a polite thing.

00:03:11 John Daub: So let's go inside and get some food. Well, mostly drinks, but I am parched. I am very parched. Has anyone ever been to Seiko Mart before?

00:03:34 Peter von Gomm: Hey, Nagoya John, baller in Hokkaido. It should be the name of the documentary.

00:03:39 John Daub: By the way, this is a crowdfunding documentary, so check it out on...

00:03:45 Peter von Gomm: I don't know what you're getting, but I'm getting some...

00:03:47 John Daub: Dude, no, no, no, no, no, no. We still got a ways to go. Dame? Of course. Come on. What's this?

00:03:54 Peter von Gomm: Oh, no, no, no, no, no.

00:03:55 John Daub: Oh, it's done. I made it. All right. And the beer is also no good because we're still driving. But tonight we will imbibe the classic Hokkaido Sapporo beer is only available here, they say.

00:04:12 Peter von Gomm: Little boy drinks.

00:04:13 John Daub: Oh, yeah. The soft drinks. I think right here. OK. We got lots of teas to choose from.

00:04:19 Peter von Gomm: You want something other than water? I'm going to get one bottle of water.

00:04:22 John Daub: Yeah. How about a Pocari Sweat? That's always good for replenishing your summer sweats.

00:04:28 Peter von Gomm: Do you want that?

00:04:29 John Daub: You want a Pocari Sweat?

00:04:30 Peter von Gomm: Yeah.

00:04:31 John Daub: OK, go ahead. Yeah. What's this guy?

00:04:35 Peter von Gomm: Oral rehydration solution.

00:04:37 John Daub: I'm going to try this Aquarius. Which one do you want?

00:04:42 Peter von Gomm: I'm going to go just with water.

00:04:44 John Daub: Clean water? I don't know if there is any.

00:04:46 Peter von Gomm: Yeah, that's weird. OK, I'll go Pocari Sweat as well. Although Aquarius is half price. That's weird.

00:04:53 John Daub: Where's the water? Here we go. How much of a water selection? Usually there's more to choose from.

00:05:01 Peter von Gomm: Two of these?

00:05:02 John Daub: Yeah. I'm going to put it in there. It's like almost a pretty good... Look at this melon cream milk.

00:05:12 Peter von Gomm: No, thank you. That's going to sit in our stomachs like a punch.

00:05:15 John Daub: Yeah, it's going to ferment. It's turning into alcohol.

00:05:22 John Daub: See, Seiko Mart has always got fresh vegetables and stuff, but their hot chef department has got hot foods and bentos and stuff. That's usually quite good.

00:06:00 Peter von Gomm: What's that?

00:06:02 John Daub: Sweet Georgia. It's a Georgia... just a short, small, black coffee. Would you like one as well?

00:06:08 Peter von Gomm: Oh, yeah. I guess... What about a... For Yamamoto-san.

00:06:10 John Daub: Yeah, let's get him a water or something.

00:06:12 Peter von Gomm: Yeah. He's our cameraman.

00:06:16 John Daub: It's nice and cool in here. Do you want one of these small ones?

00:06:20 Peter von Gomm: Sean?

00:06:21 John Daub: Yeah, that's fine. I could use some caffeine. Do you want anything to eat?

00:06:29 Peter von Gomm: You just had a huge breakfast.

00:06:31 John Daub: Yeah, that's right. I'm not really hungry. Something sweet, maybe? Chocolate? Pancakes? I don't know.

00:06:49 Peter von Gomm: All right, Peter. By the way, do you have any money? I left it in the car. I'll go get my wallet.

00:06:55 John Daub: That's all right. I got a wallet.

00:06:57 Peter von Gomm: Seriously, Kate. No, it's fine. It's fine. Save the receipt. I'll take it outside. I'll meet you in the parking lot. Meet you in the parking lot. High noon.

00:07:08 John Daub: These croissants look good. Chocolate croissants. I'm going to grab one more water for Yamamoto-san.

00:07:13 Peter von Gomm: Okay. Can I take anything at all?

00:07:16 John Daub: I'm looking. Oddly enough, it didn't say no filming.

00:07:24 John Daub: So, guys, that's another thing we checked out. I guess you could film inside the Seiko Marts, which is cool. Hope the signal's strong, everybody.

00:07:32 John Daub: We went yesterday. We went to a fireworks festival in Muroran. And we tried to livestream it, but the signal was nonexistent. It just wouldn't connect because there were so many people around. The fireworks festival is about 30 minutes. I'll post a little bit of a clip on Instagram stories if you're not checking that out. Only in Japan TV on Instagram.

00:08:00 John Daub: Yeah, so that's a little look at Seiko Mart. It's just a different convenience store. And they do things just a little bit differently. But it's other cities like Nemuro, which is where we're going.

00:08:15 Peter von Gomm: What day are we going there?

00:08:17 John Daub: I think on the 3rd we'll be in Nemuro. They have local convenience store chains that compete against the big chain, Seiko Mart. But 7-Eleven has moved in, so the convenience store wars up in Hokkaido are a little bit more complex and interesting than in other places. If you go to Shikoku, you have a lot more Lawsons. Down there in Okayama, Shikoku area. And then if you go down to Kyushu, different kind of a different vibe. But everywhere you go, you'll find 7-Eleven, Family Mart, and Lawson's pretty much national. But Hokkaido has the Seiko Mart country.

00:08:51 Peter von Gomm: I'm going to see Peter coming out here.

00:08:56 John Daub: Hey, Vaughn is here. Thanks, Vaughn.

00:08:58 Peter von Gomm: We're going to be stopping for the next few days. Actually, Vaughn, tomorrow we're going to be going to a fruit and vegetable stand. And stopping in Rausu. And picking up some fresh fruit right off of the road after we've ridden there. And it's going to be pretty good. These bikes are pretty awesome.

00:09:14 John Daub: Now that Peter's not around, I can talk a little bit more freely without the teacher. But I wasn't really used to... You know, you can't compare riding on a school track that's half the size of a football field. You can't compare that with actually being out on the open road. I thought it would be more similar to driving, but it's actually not. It's riding, but you're still driving. I wouldn't say riding is a good word. You're still driving, right? Let's ride a motorcycle. You're basically driving a motorcycle.

00:09:51 Peter von Gomm: No, you're not. You drive a bicycle.

00:09:52 John Daub: You drive a bicycle?

00:09:56 Peter von Gomm: No, you don't. You ride it.

00:09:57 John Daub: Well, I'm riding in a car, too. As a passenger.

00:10:01 Peter von Gomm: Well, you're driving a motorcycle. It's a motor vehicle.

00:10:05 John Daub: Oh, this is mine?

00:10:06 Peter von Gomm: Yeah, that's yours. Do you want your coffee?

00:10:08 John Daub: Do you want your coffee in here as well, sir? Or put it in your pocket? Take it down to the lake?

00:10:12 Peter von Gomm: Yeah, we'll take it down to the lake and do a five-minute walk before the phone over the beach.

00:10:16 John Daub: Is that a coffee in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me? That's a very rock-hard coffee, sir.

00:10:22 Peter von Gomm: It's in the freezer. A stomach isn't.

00:10:29 John Daub: All right, I'll put mine in my pocket, too. Let me try this Aquarius.

00:10:37 Peter von Gomm: How's that go down?

00:10:38 John Daub: I like the Pocari Sweat, yeah.

00:10:39 Peter von Gomm: Yeah? It's nice when it's cold. We give Yamamoto-san his... Yeah, that is... water.

00:10:44 John Daub: He's hiding from us. He thinks he can get out of the shot. I think if we feature him, we might have to pay him a guarantee, up his guarantee or something, right?

00:10:54 Peter von Gomm: Yeah.

00:10:55 John Daub: He thinks he's hiding behind that car or something. Where is he?

00:10:58 Peter von Gomm: I don't know. He's down where we're supposed to be going, so let's get down there.

00:11:02 John Daub: Oh, so he thinks we're leaving. No, no, no. He's waiting for us down there. All right, let's go to the lake.

00:11:06 Peter von Gomm: Hey, wait, wait, wait. Hang on a second here.

00:11:07 John Daub: You left your keys in your box.

00:11:11 Peter von Gomm: So, Kaido, it's safe. He's gonna steal our helmet.

00:11:16 John Daub: You don't have your mask. You have your helmet. You don't have your mask. In case we slip inside that building. You didn't bother.

00:11:23 Peter von Gomm: On Earth, what would you do without me? Besides not have a smooth trip. It's not that easy.

00:11:34 John Daub: Should I take my wallet?

00:11:36 Peter von Gomm: Yes.

00:11:37 John Daub: Well, I don't think anyone's gonna go into my bag.

00:11:40 Peter von Gomm: And then, fast forward. I didn't think anyone would get in my bag and steal my wallet. Geez Louise. All right, you know what? You're such a... You should learn to trust people. People are good. No one's gonna take that gift. You're such a... I think anyone's gonna take the Insta360.

00:11:58 John Daub: I guess it's okay. We're only gonna be five minutes. Our Peso time. That's like an hour. Peso's time of me, I should say. Peso's probably a very prompt person.

00:12:09 Peter von Gomm: Can you, uh... Show us?

00:12:12 John Daub: Oh. I'll hold the camera if you want me to.

00:12:18 John Daub: So, how are you guys all doing? I hope you're enjoying our trip thus far. Even a fraction of the amount that we have. Today was especially awesome.

00:12:27 Peter von Gomm: That ride from our hotel to here along the lake absolutely amazing you'll see that in the upcoming documentary right along the lake through the trees cool breeze twisties bikers you know what I'm talking about what did you think yeah I think I'm getting a lot more comfortable the more I ride the more I glide it is.

00:12:54 John Daub: Now speaking of gliding you better cross the street see a nice family taking a walk here this is a pretty nice resort look at that all the green fresh air.

00:13:07 Peter von Gomm: Yeah Macha just wrote in documentary question mark this we're here for our backers as well as only in Japan we're gonna do the episode and these live streams but we wanted to do an adventure and on Kickstarter we're we're selling the documentary as well as that Tene Gooey which are the Karate Kid headbands and the echo bags with the design created by Dakota which has grass flowers of Furano mountains of Hokkaido you can almost house yeah the dairy cows you can almost smell the dairy air I yeah that expression dairy air must have come from Hokkaido because we smelled it and yet not have stepped in it although we are booked in and we're not allowed to go out and do anything we're not allowed to do at a milking experience for Peter manhole it's a nice one yeah if we were to ride through a pile of it we probably wouldn't know right by the way PV POV Sam is here welcome to Hokkaido welcome welcome one day you may be here riding who knows yeah it will be next week in a few days so today we're here let's get some.

00:14:31 John Daub: Look at the island in the center of this lake. This is beautiful. Oh, man. Why are we leaving? I need to get the drone up. We've got quite a bit of Lake Toya drone footage. I think we're good. We'll stop the cameraman stalking us.

00:14:46 Peter von Gomm: No, it's not him. It's not him. We don't have a lot of time, so let's get down to the water and make way to the right here.

00:14:52 John Daub: Here's what looks like a waterfront restaurant. Yeah, they have some really nice cafe restaurants. All local stuff. I like that. One of our goals is to support the local businesses.

00:15:04 Peter von Gomm: Is that a cranberry tree?

00:15:06 John Daub: I thought they made cranberries in bogs. That's a beautiful tree.

00:15:10 Peter von Gomm: I don't know what that is. Look at the twist in that trunk. I love it.

00:15:14 John Daub: Yeah, it's beautiful. This destination is very popular with families.

00:15:17 Peter von Gomm: Yeah, family place. Not unlike Nojiriko in Nagano, which is also a summer resort area. Lots of families go there, and it's a great place for your family. Kids that play in the water, water sports. Yeah. See these signs. You can see these power boats out here. If you do have kids, don't let them cross the street like that. You can get hit. It's not a lot of traffic, but you never know.

00:15:45 John Daub: This guy's fishing down here. Oh, the guy in the water? Yeah. He's good fishing. I assume. We'll see if he catches any.

00:16:00 Peter von Gomm: It's hazy though, and it's been like this. I guess it's in the mornings. It's really cool at night. In the mornings, it's cool. And then when it heats up, there's this mist. And it clears up later on in the afternoon. Alright, follow PBG.

00:16:22 John Daub: Leo, I would love to take a dip, but I'm not going to ride wet. There's a trade-off here. There's a trade-off. I don't want to ride wet.

00:16:32 Peter von Gomm: However, we do have an RV segment on this trip. It's half motorcycles, half RVs. And we're going to take a dip. The goal was if we get 500 backers or... 3.5 million yen. And we're going to pass that. We're going to jump into Lake... Was it 500 backers? We're going to jump into Lake Akan, which is up in the center of Hokkaido. It's going to be pretty cool. Refreshing. Since we're in an RV, we'll be able to do that. The first goal was 3.5 million yen. And once we get there, we're going to be booking a trip to Hakodate to return here to say thank you to everybody for a day.

00:17:18 John Daub: I see you're not camouflaged very well. That red is pretty striking, sir. You should have been in camouflage. Or gone completely naked. Flesh color. You would have been able to maybe scare me. But I have my left eye on your suspicious movements for quite a while. As I've become trained to search for possible...

00:17:40 Peter von Gomm: You're like a Toyoko ninja.

00:17:43 John Daub: Yeah, basically my left eye is always on looking for danger. I'm a little bit more of a Pomeranian. Looks like our family dog, Leo. Like a little baby llama. We had a dog in my parents' home called Leo. So I guess you could say our son, like Indiana Jones, was named after the dog.

00:18:07 Peter von Gomm: Is that the origin?

00:18:09 John Daub: No, because Leo has kanji. It's R-I-O, but in English it's Leo. Ryo, it's the same. Right. So don't tell Ryo when he grows up. He was... He was named after a dog.

00:18:21 Peter von Gomm: Yeah. It sounds so much like Sean Connery telling Indiana Jones, You're named after the dog. To that hot Nazi woman you have. Right.

00:18:33 John Daub: This is a beautiful... Oh, this is the Mizuno Eki.

00:18:38 Peter von Gomm: Yeah, it's a Mizuno Eki. Usually it's a Michi no Eki (road station). But because it's on the waterfront, they have a little play of words. It's a water... There's a yatai (food stall). A yatai inside?

00:18:48 John Daub: All right, we can do a very quick look, Peter. Yeah. Because we got to get back on the road. We got a lot of... A lot of stuff to film.

00:18:56 Peter von Gomm: These kids are enjoying kakigori (shaved ice). Oh, wow. Yeah, kakigori. Wow. They're wearing the traditional yukata (summer dress). Yeah, summer yukatas. That guy is... Yeah, he's protecting his grandkids. Nice. From prying eyes.

00:19:15 John Daub: So there's a... He's doing takoyaki? What is that there? Yakisoba (fried noodles). A yakisoba. Yakisoba. This is... Kakigori. I'm not hungry at all, even if I wanted to buy it.

00:19:29 Peter von Gomm: No. They've got edamame for 100 yen. The prices are pretty good. I'm just not... Our breakfast was so big and rich. Yeah, I'm not hungry at all.

00:19:38 John Daub: Over here is the kakigori that she's making, shaved ice.

00:19:41 Peter von Gomm: Thank you, Carl. Just has backed the documentary. I appreciate it. Thank you, Carl. Anybody who backs it, I'll see the notification and shout you out. Thank you very much. While we're live here. Thank you.

00:19:53 John Daub: Let's take a quick look-see into the Toya, which is Lake Toya Roadhouse. Mizunoeki. Mizunoeki.

00:20:02 Peter von Gomm: So you can actually park... Lakehouse. At Mizunoeki, you can park here. You have an RV or something and stay at night. Oh, wow.

00:20:08 John Daub: Is that correct, John?

00:20:10 Peter von Gomm: Yeah, I believe you can use the parking lot for camping. There's the police force. Hey, look. A little bit of training. That could be us.

00:20:30 John Daub: How come when we get pulled over, it's never these cops? License and registration, please. Yes.

00:20:48 Peter von Gomm: Peter, look at these officers of the law. All led by a strong leadership team. Would you give them... I would happily be double fined for that.

00:21:01 John Daub: I would be really angry, John. Why? They put this guy's face on your body. Is that my body? Yeah. I would sue them. Oh, my gosh. That's right.

00:21:13 Peter von Gomm: That looks like a nice view. Oh, yeah. Oh, wow. It's beautiful. Oh, I think we're... Is that the island in the middle there? It says Mount Usu. Usu. I'm not sure where that is.

00:21:28 John Daub: I guess the city hall is here, but they also have a store where you can buy vegetables and fruits and things like that. So these roadhouses or lake house, I guess, is what it is. All pretty cool.

00:21:42 Peter von Gomm: Yeah. All right, Peter, let's walk back to the lake and then end the live stream. We've got to get a move on.

00:22:01 John Daub: Wow. We're down to this sign along the lake there. Yeah. Wow. This is a great day to be having a picnic outside on the lake here. It's a little bit cooler, too, here than in the city like Sapporo. For sure. Yeah. Get a nice breeze.

00:22:21 Peter von Gomm: In the mountains. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. I guess you can't go to the mountains. You have to go to the dock here.

00:22:31 John Daub: Let's look at the beach and then we'll end it here with a sip of a shot of coffee. Hey, Leo.

00:22:38 Peter von Gomm: The logs feet are probably on fire. Yeah.

00:22:41 John Daub: Speaking of feet, these boots. We do have motorcycle boots. Yeah. Check it out. These are the Kushitani boots. Look at that. And what I love about them is this is how you tighten them. You loosen them by pulling up on this tab. Yeah. Push it down and then twist it and it tightens to the desired... And this helps with the gear shifting, the protection. Yeah. It's pretty nice. I didn't think I would like boots, but they're so comfortable and so good for shifting. I don't know how I can ride without them now.

00:23:20 Peter von Gomm: Damn, if we didn't have all this gear, I would totally be swimming to that island on the other side. I could totally do it. How far is it? I got it.

00:23:31 John Daub: Those boots are made for walking. Just like those kids are made for swimming. Oh, man. I'm so excited.

00:23:41 Peter von Gomm: We are too. Let's get back on the bikes.

00:23:45 John Daub: Yeah. I want to, but I can't.

00:23:48 Peter von Gomm: So you announced about our first stretch goal, right?

00:23:52 John Daub: Yeah. The first stretch goal, 3.5 million. We're going to Hakodate. So we're probably going to book the trip while we're here. So that's cool. It just depends. We've got to get to that 3.5 million mark and we're very close. Very close.

00:24:07 Peter von Gomm: 500 backers, we jump into Lake Akan. So we're close to that. 00:26:10 John Daub: All right on that sizzling note we need to say goodbye to the lake say hello to the road we're heading to Niseko which is a skiing village today um it's only about 45 minutes down the road but we plan to do some drone shots to to uh get get pictures all over the place and it's going to take some time um seiko mart was a nice stop thank goodness i like stopping every 20 30 minutes anyways kind of stretching my legs and feet and then getting back on i had some problems with my table i've got a lot of points that um the first day because we're riding i was riding with a death grip and my fingers started spasming maybe i was a little dehydrated as well you reckoned yeah.

00:26:51 Peter von Gomm: Uh tomohisa has pledged yay i couldn't see the total i think it was 2300 to 2300 which had been like a a super pack or a writer pack thank you thank you for that tomy sir remember the time sale yeah don't forget the time sale and we do have a time sale we lowered the price on a documentary and a postcard um to four fours it's a lucky number if you're playing poker but not so much in japan and wait before you while you're waiting for the next live stream why not listen to some true crime on the homicide inc true crime podcast my weekly true crime podcast compelling true crime stories that pass the test of time be frightened and evacuate by listening to his podcasts don't evacuate don't be frightened evacuate to the channel.

00:27:39 John Daub: Look at this interesting place is that a cafe or yeah some sort of eatery but there's no signage i think they just finished it i like the metal door yeah it's cool you'll find like these um small businesses small businesses for ice cream and coffee down the road here.

00:28:00 Peter von Gomm: Hey matsumi has just pledged 30 000 yen thank you matsumi thank you is that matsumi matsumi let's do it time we were last time i was in Sapporo i think it was with masumi at the snow festival years ago so they're selling like local good jams and oh wow jams yeah i think for some jam all right onwards get the rubber down another ducky the comm units i feel so much like we're on cbs when we're doing the comm units it was one of my favorite movies when i was growing up as a kid was that movie convoy you ever see that one chris christopherson yes was he in it he was i think isn't he danish or something i don't know but he was also in star is born the original one with oh was he yeah i know all i i just know that that name sounds very familiar i think he was rubber ducky in that movie it was awesome um i wanted to be a truck driver thanks to uh that convoy movie just this is cool that might be the best trucking movie out there ever ever don't forget bj and the bear that's a good one that's a classic one show.

00:29:17 John Daub: Damn, it's hot when you get off the bike and you're walking around. It is hot. Hokkaido is not humid, but just sizzles you. Tokyo sizzles you and it mugs you. Because that's why they call it muggy, because you get mugged. Mugged by Mother Nature. Pretty much the deal.

00:29:37 Peter von Gomm: Alright, so we'll do another livestream from Niseko probably tomorrow morning and show you around the town there. It's going to be hard to do a on-the-bike livestream, but we will try to find a time to do that. Maybe in Otaru a little bit where the signal is good. We'll have some time to set up, but we're hoping that you get the documentary so you can support the documentary.

00:30:03 John Daub: We could go behind the Seiko Mart. I'm going to go the front way. I just filled the tank of gas earlier too.

00:30:14 Peter von Gomm: So long everybody.

00:30:18 John Daub: Alright, see you later.

00:30:19 Peter von Gomm: Bye Peter and see you everybody. This is a good place to say goodbye. But I hope we have a safe trip.

00:30:28 John Daub: I'm like, I'm doing okay. I'm doing my best here. But we're having fun and it's going to be a story that I certainly will be talking about for the rest of my life. And I'm glad I'm out here. And it took two months to learn how to ride the motorcycle.

00:30:45 Peter von Gomm: See, this is how Peter... You drive like you walk.

00:30:47 John Daub: So far. So far ahead. Just because your motorcycle is faster, dude. I can't even... This is as far as I can zoom and you're still like out of focus.

00:31:02 Peter von Gomm: Got to stay the speed limit.

00:31:08 John Daub: Alright everybody. See ya. Going to cool down and then get back on the road. Bye.

00:31:13 Peter von Gomm: Thanks for watching.
