Morning in Rausu North East Hokkaido
Morning in Rausu North East Hokkaido
Overview
In this episode, John Daub and his friend Peter von Gomm wake up in their rental RV parked in Rausu, a remote town in northeast Hokkaido. They provide a detailed tour of their Japan CRC rental camper, showcasing the sleeping arrangements, charging stations, and Japanese-specific features like shoe removal inside the vehicle. The duo enjoys a breakfast of fresh Hanasaki crab and shrimp before heading to the local Michi no Eki (road station) to grab coffee and explore the facilities.
The video highlights the stark contrast between the cool summer weather in Hokkaido (around 15°C) and the intense heatwave happening simultaneously in Tokyo. John and Peter interact with locals, spot a crow they name Toby (crow), and discuss the benefits of camping at road stations, which offer 24-hour restrooms and parking. The episode serves as both a travel log and a practical guide for RV travel in Japan, emphasizing the convenience of road stations and the freshness of Hokkaido seafood.

Japan Travel Tips
- RV Rentals: Japan CRC offers rental RVs nationwide with English support. No special truck permit is needed for this size; an International Driver's License works.
- Michi no Eki (Road Stations): Excellent spots for overnight parking. They usually have 24-hour restrooms, clean facilities, and local food shops.
- Weather: Hokkaido summers are significantly cooler than Tokyo. In August, Rausu was around 15°C (59°F) while Tokyo was near 35°C (95°F).
- Seafood: Rausu is famous for Hanasaki crab. Buy fresh at local markets or road stations.
- Shoes Off: Even in rental RVs, it is customary to remove shoes to keep the interior clean, reflecting Japanese hygiene standards.
Japanese Language & Culture Notes
- Michi no Eki (道の駅): Literally "road station." Government-designated rest areas that often feature local produce, restaurants, and 24-hour parking/toilets.
- Zangi (ザンギ): Hokkaido-specific term for karaage (fried chicken). Often marinated differently than standard karaage.
- Yezo Deer (エゾシカ): Native deer species in Hokkaido, often seen near roads and towns.
- Onsen (温泉): Hot springs. John mentions steam rising from an onsen dumping into the ocean nearby.
- Toby (crow): John's recurring nickname for crows he encounters on his travels.
Food & Drink Guide
- Hanasaki Crab (Hanasaki gani): 00:08:07 Boiled crab that turns red when cooked. John and Peter eat this for breakfast.
- Shrimp (Ebi): 00:08:41 Special shrimp scissors provided to cut the shells.
- Zangi Sandwich: 00:15:48 Fried chicken sandwich available at the road station.
- Kurohamo Don: 00:13:35 Blackthroat seaperch rice bowl (sold out when they arrived).
- Coffee: 00:14:24 Purchased from vending machines and the road station shop (Tully's Hot).
People

00:00:07 John Daub: Hello everybody and welcome to Rausu! Rausu is in northeast Hokkaido and it's just happened to be where we are. That is our RV camper and we're gonna take a look inside of that but first I'm gonna take you around this amazing town—amazing because we are here. Joining me in this live stream is a man across the street, Peter von Gomm. We drove in here about 5:30 p.m. yesterday and we had to make a decision whether or not to stay here or go to an RV onsen camp. We just picked here because we had the seaside and everything we needed and we're gonna explain a little bit more why with the sea right there. Look at that. This is northeast Hokkaido and so far away if you look at it on the map. Not a place that many of you would decide to visit I think as tourists but when you live in Japan seeing all the corners of this amazing country is just part of calling this place home.
00:01:08 John Daub: Home is so far away for us. Feels great. We are driving around in our home. Yeah it is. I was gonna show them that was the next—time we'll take you into the RV this time. Did we clean it? We didn't clean it. Alright doesn't matter.
00:01:31 John Daub: Couple of guys just to side note the prices of gas right up here you can see boom per liter by the way per liter. Green is diesel and yellow high-octane and red is regular. That steam right there rising out of the right side is from an onsen dumping into the ocean so it smells like a rotten egg over there. So Peter's been bathing in the steam and I think that counts as soaking in an onsen.
00:02:13 Peter von Gomm: Why do you think I look so... my baby smooth skin?
00:02:16 John Daub: Yeah I smell like rotten eggs. You think that rotten egg smell is from the onsen though?
00:02:25 John Daub: Rausu, the town here is pretty much just a street. I know that it goes deeper in there a lot of that is just woods as you can see up there. There's other campers here in the parking lot as well. I unfortunately left my gimbal, I'm using Peter's, at Nosappu so if you find my gimbal at Cape Nosappu sent me a message. Poor guy's all by himself. He'll pay the postage. Yeah, he's out there on the very tip of the east walking towards the lighthouse. Put him down. I knew I'd forget him and guess what I did.
00:03:02 John Daub: So this camper is from Japan CRC. It's a company that has rental RVs all over the country of Japan. They're the largest outfitter and they were kind enough to let us use their Robinson 106 which is a Toyota chassis and it has the camping cab on top of it and it's awesome. Really enjoying it. It's a Toyota. That's where we charge the power. There's a right there. We got to do that tonight too because we didn't get a chance to do that today. The gas tank is underneath here. You have to double key it to open it up. We're going to put this all in the documentary.
00:03:45 John Daub: This is the door lock so it doesn't flap open in the wind. Little things like that are pretty important. All right let's go inside here. Oh wait I think my mom is watching. Hey mom. Mom it's okay to chat. Just say nice things about John. He's sensitive. I am sensitive. All right you gotta take your shoes off by the way when you're coming to the camper. Is that something we do in the west? In a camper? Yeah. People that like to have a clean interior. And then here's the shoes box. So the Japanese are very concerned about cleanliness and they should be. Everybody should be clean.
00:04:36 John Daub: This is our charging area where we get the cameras, the batteries, the ports, drone batteries, all sorts of stuff. Charge it up there. Right. This is just our charging cable. Get more plug this in. Oh yeah. All right we got to charge that up tonight. This is the panel. There's the just like in a lot of the houses in Japan you have a panel here to a breaker I guess you could say more or less where it turns on power to certain areas. We have limited power. We limit the power to certain parts of it so that we can keep the battery sharper. Got snacks up here and we've been sleeping together up here on the top. Peter on the far left.
00:05:16 Peter von Gomm: Far left.
00:05:16 John Daub: Yeah and John on the far right we're extremists. Eastmost and westernmost. This is no man's land. It's all good. And tonight though we're gonna be making the bed. These two seats here which looks like a booth. There's my computer right there. I've been doing a little bit of editing. Looks like a booth here. These can come down and then you'll be able to make another bed here and because we got more time tonight right we're gonna do that. Try that out.
00:05:47 Peter von Gomm: Yeah. Is that correct? Good luck with that. Good luck with that.
00:05:54 John Daub: I actually this the upper part is very comfortable. It's very spacious but when you got to get up in the middle of night to go pee-pee it's kind of precarious isn't it?
00:06:00 Peter von Gomm: Yeah. You have to climb down and it's yeah it's a little bit a little bit more trouble.
00:06:06 John Daub: Um but yeah you can set up this down here. Um this becomes like a semi-double size down here on the bottom. Yeah it looks nice. You're going to have a nice sleep down here.
00:06:16 Peter von Gomm: After you help me set it up.
00:06:23 John Daub: All right that's the problem. The problem is that it's complicated to set this up a little bit, but I recorded it. Here's the driver's cabin. We'll take you in there a little bit. I've got to get in touch with Richard.
00:06:32 John Daub: We already did yesterday one of the Toby seats.
00:06:35 John Daub: So shout out to Mubarak. Thank you so much. That was fun. We got a chance to drive with Mubarak through this town a little bit. And while he was eating breakfast in another country, it was pretty awesome. He got a good signal and we had some fun. So I really appreciate that support. By the way, this is a total Kickstarter project. And I want to say thank you to everybody who's been backing that too. The floor is clean because we take off our shoes. That's another thing that's a very Japanese trait.
00:07:07 John Daub: There's a TV in here, which we're never going to be turning this on because there's not a lot of really good signal. This relies on TV signal and there's just not a lot of that. We got three locks here.
00:07:24 Peter von Gomm: Okay. You closed it. You locked it. Oh, yeah. I did. Okay. Open it up here. You push it. It's pretty cool. Locked in place. If you want to close it, just push it up again and it will slowly does this.
00:07:41 John Daub: So the tutorial was very valuable for us, even though it took like an hour. How about the fridge?
00:07:47 Peter von Gomm: Oh, the fridge. You walked right past that.
00:07:51 John Daub: Yeah. Before we leave, we are before we leave. We got to eat breakfast. And what that breakfast is?
00:08:02 Peter von Gomm: Yeah, we didn't eat it last night because we weren't hungry. Now we are.
00:08:07 John Daub: So before we leave, we're having this Hanasaki crab, which is going to be awesome. Big shout out to Taiyo. Really appreciate this. We had the shrimps last night, so we are pretty happy people right now. So this we also got the shrimp scissors, which are right there. These are the special shrimps, the scissors to cut up that shrimp. See that right there? You need those. Those are crab, crab scissors. It's a beautiful red because when you boil the crabs, they turn red.
00:08:41 Peter von Gomm: Yeah.
00:08:41 John Daub: And this will be in the documentary as well. It's pretty interesting. Almost immediately.
00:08:46 Peter von Gomm: Almost immediately.
00:08:47 John Daub: I did not know that. I thought that they were red naturally like that. That's not the case.
00:08:52 Peter von Gomm: Yeah.
00:08:53 John Daub: The boiling water does that to them. So that's pretty much the RV. We got a lot of luggage space up here is ventilation that can either pull air in or suck it. We usually suck the air out and then pull the air in. But so far we really haven't used it much.
00:09:08 Peter von Gomm: Yeah.
00:09:08 John Daub: The weather's been pretty cool and Peter's kept the tootin to a minimum.
00:09:13 Peter von Gomm: What are you laughing at? You're the only one laughing. You were asleep. You just didn't know.
00:09:18 John Daub: I was didn't I didn't know. It's true.
00:09:23 John Daub: Yeah, I need to get a coffee. Do you want anything from the vending machine?
00:09:26 Peter von Gomm: Coffee.
00:09:26 John Daub: We're going to end this live stream, I think, because we really need to get on the road.
00:09:30 Peter von Gomm: Yes.
00:09:30 John Daub: We're going to show you right now. Um, Rausu's Michi no Eki (road station), which is a roadhouse.
00:09:40 Peter von Gomm: Can you get my shoes out of the box?
00:09:42 John Daub: Do I look like a butler?
00:09:43 Peter von Gomm: Yes, right away, sir. Mr. Daub, here's your slippers.
00:09:48 John Daub: What happened to your gimbal?
00:09:50 Peter von Gomm: Wait, don't, don't. You got it. Did you turn it off? Maybe you turned it off. OK, you got it. OK.
00:09:56 John Daub: Let me see. Hang on, guys. There's been a minor malfunction here. Peter is against DJI products.
00:10:08 Peter von Gomm: He locked it. That's why.
00:10:10 John Daub: Oh. Here's your hand. OK. Back in business. Peter's against DJI products, so I've never used this. What's this gimbal called?
00:10:25 Peter von Gomm: Snoppa.
00:10:26 John Daub: Snoppa? Hey, beggars cannot be choosers, Mr. Daub.
00:10:29 Peter von Gomm: What did you say? Five bucks by going. How could you hold it still with your bare hands?
00:10:34 John Daub: It's it looks like a nice, nice gimbal. I'm not going to knock them. It works really well. Hey, Mo's here. Moe. We actually let's do that. They have got coffee here, Peter.
00:10:47 Peter von Gomm: Yeah. And the thing is, you have change. I got change in the cab.
00:10:51 John Daub: Bradshaw Studio. We are doing our best here. We are keeping it up.
00:11:02 Peter von Gomm: Keeping it up. It's my motorcycle face. Supposed to ride real relaxed. The first day I was all clenched up. That caused a lot of problems.
00:11:16 John Daub: Toby (crow).
00:11:21 John Daub: Excited. Jim, keep record. 11, 24 minutes in. Toby, excited. Enemy to the people.
00:11:36 John Daub: All right. There's a food truck and that food truck is on yakitori. And that's not exactly what we want to eat in the morning. We got that crab. So there's that. And then we ate dinner last night up here on the second floor. And the window has a really nice view of the seaside of Rausu. Right there.
00:12:03 John Daub: OK, let's get something from that vending machine. Wait, does it have MCM?
00:12:07 Peter von Gomm: I'm repeating. Hammer time.
00:12:14 John Daub: I can't get this gimbal. It's not cooperating. Oh, there we got it. Hammer time.
00:12:26 Peter von Gomm: Shuffle. Hammer time.
00:12:29 John Daub: Oh. You look like a crab. People don't know MC Hammer here.
00:12:35 Peter von Gomm: They're living in that cool van.
00:12:38 John Daub: Oh, they're living in the van?
00:12:40 Peter von Gomm: Yeah. Yeah, check that out. It's a Ghibli van. Right there. That's where they live. Oh, they were in the Ghibli van? It has a stained glass window on it. And in the back, did you see the chandelier?
00:12:54 John Daub: No, it's a chandelier. Well, it's like a really nice looking light. Yeah. It's cool shuffling. I can't do that crab. I think MC Hammer got that from watching crabs walk on the beach, I think.
00:13:11 John Daub: We had the curry last night. We had the curry last night because that's all they had. We got here too late. We were here for last order. But that was, mine was awesome. The volume of curry that we got was immense. It was pretty incredible.
00:13:25 Peter von Gomm: Mine was... Yeah, you got the one with the crab... the crab. And it was, I thought it was just two pieces of crab on top, but there's tons of crab inside. Inside. It looked good. It was good. He chose wisely.
00:13:35 John Daub: I wanted to get this one, the kurohamo don, but it was sold out. Hey, Dutch Bingo's Japan. Thank you for being a member for so long. Thank you. Thank you. From the bottom of our hearts. And be as fat boys in the house. I see that just going back. And Pana Goitus, thank you. Looking at the menu here. I'm sure I missed somebody. I apologize. I do really appreciate this. But let's get a drink for the road, Peter.
00:14:08 Peter von Gomm: Yeah. What would you like? Gosh. Actually, there's very few hot drinks in this machine. There's a Georgia Black. Georgia Black. And a kurohamo don. Oh, that's a cool. That's a Tully's Hot here. So they got hot tea if you want a hot coffee.
00:14:24 John Daub: That's what I want. It's kind of cool. Yeah, the Tully's Hot. But before we do that, so this is the roadhouse. There's more vending machines here. This is the roadhouse entrance. And this is the restrooms. They're open 24 hours. So inside of here, let me just pop in for a second. Women, men. And boom. It's very clean inside. I know I'm not going to take you into the toilets.
00:14:52 Peter von Gomm: Take a kick. Oh, there's a camera in the restroom. You're one of these kind of creepy.
00:14:56 John Daub: Hey, look at the deer. Yezo deer (Ezo shika).
00:15:00 Peter von Gomm: Yezo deer.
00:15:03 John Daub: What if he's here? All right. Um, I don't know. I saw a window that was open up here with the ice cream. Do you think they have hot coffee like brewed?
00:15:16 Peter von Gomm: I'd rather, you know, support these ladies out working inside here because they're really nice. I saw the same ladies who made our dinner yesterday. We're outside cleaning this place. making it really nice.
00:15:28 John Daub: Ladies of Rausu. Pretty nice. What do you think? You see Hattie Coffee?
00:15:40 Peter von Gomm: Oh, they do up there. Boom!
00:15:43 John Daub: That ice cream looks pretty darn good, too. What do you call this?
00:15:48 Peter von Gomm: A dump of ice cream in your coffee? No, those sandwiches look good, too. A zangi sandwich, if you don't know already. Zangi is karaage chicken in Hokkaido only. So we call them karaage down in Tokyo, but here they're zangi. Z-A-N-G-I. Zangi.
00:16:11 John Daub: That one is a little bit a little bit randy. We're watching Cool Hand Luke last night, and I can't get rid of this southern twinge in my Ohio accent.
00:16:27 Peter von Gomm: What we have here is failure to communicate.
00:16:30 John Daub: What we have here is a failure to communicate. I can't do it as good. If you're from the south, I apologize.
00:16:46 Peter von Gomm: Smoothie. I'll go look inside and see if I maybe it's self-serve.
00:16:51 John Daub: Okay, boss.
00:16:54 Peter von Gomm: I just gave up power. Chris Cypress gave me that. Chris Cypress said it. It wasn't me. Chris said it. Buying a coffee here, boss. Any more bad words about my gimbal?
00:17:11 John Daub: Oh, a night in the box.
00:17:14 Peter von Gomm: Oh, yeah, the box. The movie we watched before was The Cooler.
00:17:20 John Daub: Pita. Two nights cooler.
00:17:28 Peter von Gomm: Anyone tell me the title of that movie? Judd's got half of it there. Yaki-chori sand was pretty good, but again, we got crab in the truck and Judd's got it right there.
00:17:40 John Daub: Well done, Judd. I can't believe it's like 35 degrees or about close to 96 in Tokyo.
00:17:50 Peter von Gomm: close to 96 in Tokyo.
00:17:50 John Daub: Folks, this is why Rausu is awesome. Look at this. Boom. See that flashing light? It says 15 degrees Celsius. 15 degrees Celsius. That's like a cool 63 or something like that. I don't know. Five degrees is nine, so five fives, nine, five, forty... I can't. I don't know what that is in Celsius. 10 degrees Celsius is 50 degrees Fahrenheit. So 15 degrees Celsius is pretty nice. Last night it got down to about 12 until I fell asleep, so it could have been down to 10 around the middle of the night. But it's nice to be here.
00:18:37 John Daub: This rest area is really nice. It looks pretty new. And that restaurant has a lot of really good food. And there's a ton of chefs in there cooking. When we left the restaurant yesterday at 6:30, we walked by the kitchen and there are seven people in there. So they employ a lot of people. And they're really nice. And I like that. Giving people jobs here. And giving people a place to park for the night. So when you do a driving in an RV or a car and you can't find a hotel, or you just don't want to find a hotel, you could just literally sleep in the parking lot at a Michi no Eki and you can use the restrooms which are open 24 hours. Almost all of them are like this. I can't say all of them because some of them might be different, but almost all.
00:19:27 John Daub: Michi no Eki, which are, I guess the translation like roadhouses, it's a hard word to translate because maybe there's no equivalent. They allow you to use the parking lot here and you can use it to camp. There's some makeshift campers like that Ghibli-looking one over there. It's made out of like mud, walls. It's so cool. And there's a stained glass window on the middle of the back there. Isn't that awesome?
00:19:55 John Daub: Speaking of awesome, awesome. Adam from 2099 is here. Nice to see you. So we're off. We're going now to the hot onsen. We got a very late start. We just slept so well last night, maybe because we were exhausted. Peter's going to get those coffees and we'll be off this direction. So I want to say thank you to everybody who's supporting the Kickstarter. We passed 500 backers, so we'll have to jump in a lake, a kon, I think.
00:20:24 Peter von Gomm: Peter is planning it as a belly flop, but I think he'd do pretty good at jackknife.
00:20:31 John Daub: And I'm not sure what I'm going to do. I might just torture myself and try to walk in. That's what I normally do. When I try to jump in, I hurt myself. I don't know if we'll do that as a livestream or just part of the documentary, but we hope that you buy the documentary. That's why we're here. We hope that you buy the documentary, which is going to be like, I guess it's getting longer and longer, like two hours, three hours. I don't know how long it's going to be, but it's going to be well over an hour and a half for sure. And the postcard is going to be pretty cool. I'm going to tell you about the documentary. Oh yeah, I got so much footage. It's going to be a lot of fun.
00:21:20 Peter von Gomm: Anybody that drips one drop of coffee on the ground a night in the box. What we have is a failure to communicate.
00:21:34 John Daub: No, mine was hotter. I think you got an old pot, then she put on a new pot. It happens sometimes.
00:21:41 Peter von Gomm: I made it, chief.
00:21:43 John Daub: There was no convenience store here that we could see, so you know what? If I had a choice between that and convenience store, I'd pick the local ladies of Rausu every single time. Except, I don't know, when they had that bread with the custard in it at 7-Eleven. That's really good.
00:22:00 Peter von Gomm: You driving?
00:22:01 John Daub: Yeah.
00:22:03 Peter von Gomm: Why wouldn't you say, would you like to drive?
00:22:06 John Daub: I like to live. That's why.
00:22:09 John Daub: All right. Do we need a drone? Do we need the PT anymore before we split?
00:22:13 Peter von Gomm: I'm fine. I'm okay.
00:22:15 John Daub: I'm just worried about the drone shot. That'd be really nice to see the seaside and going past this town. Well. I could get the drone out here and then just follow the RV as we exit and drive through and we could have the music.
00:22:31 Peter von Gomm: Lafayette Highway. We could just do something like that and we could... I'm gonna ride it all night.
00:22:37 John Daub: And then we could pick it up at the port over there. The fishing port. The fishing port over there. That'd be cool.
00:22:42 Peter von Gomm: Yeah.
00:22:43 John Daub: We'll do that quick and then we'll get out of town. All right, everybody. That's what we're gonna do. Have a good...
00:22:49 John Daub: Here's the driver's side. It was... I drove it... I drove it...
00:22:54 Peter von Gomm: Yes. Yes. Two nights ago and it was... For about 30 minutes. I don't think so. For about 90 minutes and it was a pretty good drive. It was a hill ride.
00:23:02 John Daub: Dude, you're asleep and you're blind because your eyes are saggy.
00:23:06 Peter von Gomm: I fainted. You don't even remember what happened. I fainted. That's why I was asleep.
00:23:10 John Daub: You're not driving the whole way. It's dangerous.
00:23:13 John Daub: All right, guys. We'll be out of here and... Thanks so much for supporting this. I hope you enjoyed our morning because we didn't. We're still waking up. Tim Lawson. I sent about eight hours...
00:23:28 Peter von Gomm: Sorry. I sent about eight hours this past weekend traveling this weekend with the GPS that sounded just like Peter.
00:23:35 Peter von Gomm: Oh, like happy days. Do you do GPS work?
00:23:39 John Daub: I have done some. Yeah, but I doubt that's what he did. Was it his cool hair? You know, the little hand Luke imitation? Take a ride up here. If you miss the turn, a night in the box.
00:23:54 Peter von Gomm: That would be fun though. That would be cool for about 30 minutes and then you're like, damn it, I'm getting rid of this one. They should give options like Yoda and all this other stuff.
00:24:03 John Daub: All right, everybody. Quick shout out to Japan CRC for the rental camper. Check them out. We'll have a link in the description. Nationwide rentals of camping cars. Great people. Speak English.
00:24:16 Peter von Gomm: I'm going to go to the next one. They do. Yeah, they do. Not they should speak English. They speak English at the camper rental and anybody used to get a regular driver's license, right? That's right. That's right. Yeah. And a little bit and a little bit of because because you have to drive a truck.
00:24:32 John Daub: Yeah, you're in your country's driver's license, international driver's license, and you're good to go unless you have a Japanese driver's license. But otherwise, no special truck permit or anything like that. You're good.
00:24:45 John Daub: All right. Appreciate it. Appreciate it. CRC and we're on the road. Thanks, guys. We'll see you. We'll do another live stream if we can down the road because there's always some sort of adventures.
00:24:54 John Daub: Somebody wrote in here. What was the criticism? What were you guys doing here? Blah, blah, blah. Like some guy was real critical. When's the interesting start part going to start? Where's the interesting part going to start?
00:25:06 Peter von Gomm: Well, you know what, dude? By the documentary, too, because that's we have to film that. Right. Give him two nights in the box. I'm going to put him. What do you mean two nights? What about 30 nights? Okay, we're going to.
00:25:17 John Daub: What's that movie with Shawshank Redemption? No, the other one. The one in the French South American jail with Bullet.
00:25:28 Peter von Gomm: Oh, dear. With Steve McQueen. Yeah. And Tootsie. Dustin Hoffman. Yeah. Are you thinking about in Turkey, a prison in Turkey? No. They were in North South Africa, South America.
00:25:44 John Daub: Okay. I don't remember that one. Really? It's not Shutter Island.
00:25:47 Peter von Gomm: Papillon.
00:25:48 John Daub: Papillon. Oh, yeah. Oh, you're pretending like all of a sudden I knew that. It's my fault. No, it's Steve McQueen and Tootsie. Somebody wants to hitchhike from Rausu to. Yeah, Papillon is a cool movie. I'm going to Papillon that guy.
00:26:02 John Daub: Anyways, everyone has their own opinions. See you later, everybody. Where's our keys?
00:26:06 Peter von Gomm: Where's our keys? Somebody steal the keys? No, I. Really? Yeah, I don't see them. What?
00:26:12 John Daub: Toby did it. That would suck.
00:26:14 John Daub: All right. Will we still be here in the next live stream? I don't know. See you guys.
00:26:18 John Daub: Bye. Matane.
