Summary

End of the Hokkaido Adventure Kickstarter

Overview

In this celebratory live stream, John Daub wraps up the Kickstarter campaign for his Hokkaido motorcycle adventure documentary alongside his wife Kanae and son Leo. Filmed at TY Harbor in Shinagawa, Tokyo—a venue deeply personal to the family as the site of their wedding reception—the video captures the tense final minutes of the campaign. John aims to reach 700 backers, a milestone that would unlock a family trip to Hakodate for Kanae and Leo.

The stream features real-time updates on backing numbers, enthusiastic thank-yous to supporters, and glimpses of the campaign rewards, including artwork by Dakota featuring John and Peter von Gomm on motorcycles with melon helmets. As the clock ticks down, the community rallies to push the project over the edge, culminating in a last-second success. John shares anecdotes from the Hokkaido trip, including wildlife encounters, and outlines plans for the documentary editing process.

00:04 John Daub: Hello everybody! Welcome to TY Harbor in Shinagawa, Tokyo. This is one of our favorite restaurants. In fact, we had our wedding reception party in this floating trailer right down there. And Leo, Leo—what is that position? Kanae Daub and Leo have joined me for lunch, a celebratory meal at the place where we had part of our wedding, which is a pretty nice day.

00:30 John Daub: But as importantly at this moment, I know the suspense is killing Leo. We have only 10 minutes left for the Kickstarter. Ah! 10 minutes! Alright, Kanae has her phone right here and we're going to be doing an auction to try to get to 700 people. We're closing in on 5 million yen! We got 14 people to get the 700 and I said if we get the 700, Kanae and Leo can go with us to Hakodate in September. Maybe if we get close to it. 9 minutes left on the right side. You see, 9 minutes. Can we get there? I don't know. If we can, that would be pretty awesome.

01:20 John Daub: We're very close to 5 million, 500% of our goal and just 14, 13 people away. Thank you. I think somebody just signed up. 13 people away from 700, which is for home runs in Major League Baseball an amazing career achievement. And for a project that's very close to, beyond our expectations. We're here on this bridge. Yeah, I can't extend it for an hour. It is what it is. We can do this.

01:55 John Daub: Here you go. Kanae, do you have any comments?

01:57 Kanae Daub: Comments?

01:58 John Daub: Yeah, do you want to go to Hakodate?

02:00 Kanae Daub: Yes, sure.

02:01 John Daub: Should the people sign up now?

02:04 Kanae Daub: Yes.

02:06 John Daub: What do you want to do in Hakodate?

02:09 Kanae Daub: I don't know. I want to go to eat Hakodate kaisendon (seafood rice bowl) of course.

02:18 John Daub: Oh yeah, the fish, the seafood bowl. Yeah, then maybe we can stay at the La Vista.

02:20 Kanae Daub: Yeah, they have nice buffet-style kaisendon buffet in the morning.

02:32 John Daub: And it's Leo's first time in Hokkaido. You look like a Hawaiian boy. Can you say aloha?

02:40 Leo: Aloha.

02:46 John Daub: He can't say aloha because he doesn't know what it means yet. But he will when we get to Hawaii one day. Thank you so much for supporting John and Peter von Gomm. Yay, thank you.

03:01 Kanae Daub: Signed up.

03:04 John Daub: It's okay. Come on. That's all right. You did your best. Appealing. Better than what I did. I didn't get anybody to sign up. Yeah, we're just seven minutes away. This is like New Year's because Peter von Gomm and I have been planning this project.

03:25 John Daub: All right, for those watching, let me maybe I can make this sound like this here. This content is going to be about two hours long. I really want you to get the postcard. At least get the postcard, which is the amazing artwork. This is the artwork of Peter von Gomm and I riding a motorcycle with melon helmets. Peter von Gomm has on a watermelon helmet. I have a Yubari cantaloupe melon helmet. We're riding down Hokkaido with a demon chasing us. This is an amazing, like a woodblock, Japanese woodblock print created by Dakota. There's lavender for the fields of Furano, and there's… Leo's getting sleepy.

03:57 Kanae Daub: Yeah, Leo's getting sleepy. That's another reason why he couldn't say aloha, because he's getting sleepy.

04:04 John Daub: This is a great place to relax. WRX Turbo's in the house. Nice to see you again, buddy. And the documentary and the postcard's going to be awesome. We're going to be sending the postcards from Hakodate, from Hokkaido. So you're going to get not just an amazing stamp and a postcard, but you're going to get a cancel mark that says Hakodate, Hokkaido, which is pretty amazing. I love the little details in sending mail. So the cancellation on the stamp will say Hakodate, which is in Hokkaido. I think that's a pretty fitting ending to it.

04:35 John Daub: Lily just pledged 1,500 yen. Thank you, Lily. Oh, my gosh. That's awesome. We're so close. Peter von Gomm, I don't know. Can I stop this crazy thing? Lily, thank you. I just got the notification. Hey, Kim, thank you, Kim. Got another notification. We're almost at 688. We're 12 away. Look at those boys fight. They will do a battle royale if we get to 700. I just made that up.

05:08 John Daub: So the documentary, 5 minutes and 56 seconds. Can we get 10 more people? I don't know. It's possible. Anything's possible. Even if we get close, I'm still going to bring Kanae with us. Peter von Gomm, three's a crowd. Four is just a party. So we're going to have a party going. Unfortunately, Joji and Peter von Gomm's wife cannot make it because they have a job. Hey, Todd, just pledged 500 yen. Thank you. That's all I ask. Pledge 100 yen. Pledge $1. You don't have to even pledge with a postcard. We want to get people. Now we have these goals. So just pledge a dollar. Greg just pledged 3000 yen. Awesome, Greg. We're so close. We're less than 10 people away with four minutes left. Oh, my gosh. This rally is so much fun. I don't know what's going to happen.

06:01 John Daub: 690. Five minutes to go. Al has just pledged 1500 yen. Thank you, Al. Welcome. Yes. You're part of a community. Nine people to go. We get nine people to get this. 700. Peter von Gomm said he's going to stand on his head with his shirt off on the top of a volcano. Four minutes and 46 seconds left. Peter von Gomm is going to take off his shirt if we get to 700 and do some sort of weird yoga pose inverted on top of a volcano or as close to a volcano as we can.

06:32 John Daub: It's a hot place. Peter von Gomm works out. Not recently, though. But all right. You don't want to see me with my shirt off. Oh, Dale just pledged 1500 yen. But I want to see you. We'll do it if we get the 700. There's 700 people. We're so close. Oh, my gosh. Just for 500. Wait. Shane writes in here for 500 yen. I'll leave my shirt on. That'd be funny if somebody just paid me to leave my shirt on. 93,000 yen away from 5 million. Scott just pledged 9000 yen. Thank you for getting that writer box. Oh, my gosh. I think we're going to do it, guys. I think we're going to do it. Nat just pledged 4500 yen. Thank you, Nat. Oh, this is amazing. It's coming. Whoa. We got like three minutes. Yeah. Can we do this? Peter von Gomm, can we do this?

07:22 John Daub: We're six away with three minutes. That says three minutes left in Japanese on the right side. Five people away. I think it's four now. Oh, my gosh. It's so amazing. Six people. Three minutes. Come on. Just pledge a dollar and you're part of it. You get your name in the credits of the video. Look at Kanae even going back and forth to appease the video. To keep this going. Look at the dedication by this mother. Is that not worth it? Is that not worth 100 yen just to pledge and be in the credits?

07:59 John Daub: Jason just pledged 3000 yen. Jason, you rock. We're five away. Can I go and go? Two minutes. Oh, my gosh. Oh, my gosh. I can't believe we're actually going to do this. Wendy just pledged 3000 yen. Wendy. Thank you, Wendy. Oh, my gosh. This is so exciting. We're like three people away. Two minutes to go. What? Hey, Shivani just pledged 3000 yen. Oh, my gosh. Are we going to do it? One minute. Holy smokes. Holy smokes. Bronson Wally. Thank you. We got four away for two minutes. Two away. 698. Holy smokes. Wendy, thank you so much. Wendy Laya. I'm so happy. I cannot believe this.

09:00 Kanae Daub: I'm so sad. I don't have a credit card.

09:02 John Daub: Craig. What? How can we get there? One minute. 30 seconds. Oh, we cannot end on 699. Oh, there's no way. We got 699. Holy smokes. One person. Please. 100 seconds. And this is probably last second. This is literally last second. That's counted. We got 10. Burp pledged 500 yen to put us out of our misery. Holy smokes. Peter von Gomm, we got 700. You can take your shirt off and pretend that you're going to go on a volcano. 701. Let's get to 800. I cannot believe this. I'm so in shock. We got 76 seconds left. Oh, my gosh. We did this.

09:54 John Daub: And by the way, you have 30 seconds to upgrade if you want to get another tenugui (Japanese hand towel). I should have said this at the beginning. There are upgrades, and I don't think we're going to make more than what we have. So you have 35 seconds to upgrade. Not upgrade, but add on if you want to get another mask or not a mask. Another echo bag, which is amazing quality. Peter von Gomm did a really good job finding a great place to do it. Another tenugui. We're so close to 5 million yen. I don't think we're going to get there, but the effort was amazing. Steven has just pledged 3000 yen. Thank you, Steven. Wow. It just keeps going. And Tuotaku, we love you. You guys, I hope in one day to meet Amber. Can you come over there, say hi and give you a big hug. You helped us put us over the top today. Look at that. 17 seconds. Peter von Gomm, do you see this?

10:48 John Daub: And Peter von Gomm was MC at the wedding inside this building, making jokes at me in front of all my friends and family. It's awful. 703 people. 5-4-3-2-1. John just pledged 9000 yen. Wow. Did you see? Look at the smoke coming. Look at that. It's exploding. 704 people. Holy macaroni. Oddly just pledged 9000 yen too. Thank you, Oddly. You just made it in, Oddly. Oddly and John were our last pledges. We did it. 705 people. I'm shell shocked. Maybe because I had one beer at lunch. Here's your phone back. That is incredible. Oh, my gosh. We got like 20 people right at the end. That is amazing.

11:49 John Daub: All right. It's so windy here. I apologize for the wind. It's so windy. Let's go down on the bridge. We're going to come back and take a picture. Can I? But sorry about the wind. Oh, my gosh. I need a shot of whiskey or something.

12:03 Kanae Daub: I'll take a shot of lemonade.

12:07 John Daub: I had a massive burger. Oh, so we already finished the trip. I can tell you with complete certainty that these ten days of adventure are amazing. We saw bears. We saw three bears crossing the street while we were driving the RV camper. And Peter von Gomm and I thought they were construction workers. Like, wait, what is that? The closer we got, construction workers don't wear big fur jackets in summer. We got closer. Holy mackerel. You could go years without finding a Japanese Asiatic black bear. And there were three of them, mama and two cubs walking across the street. That's going to be in the documentary.

12:47 John Daub: We saw so much wildlife just driving around. Foxes running across the street. Deer on the side of the road. We saw every Hokkaido animal. We didn't see any wild boars, which would have been pretty cool. But what an effort. And I'm so excited for everybody who backed for the documentary because Peter von Gomm and I—Peter von Gomm's coming back at the end of August, and we're going to start working, editing that documentary. And I'm just so excited for this to relive the memories, but then to share this adventure with you.

13:17 John Daub: I have no plans. I don't plan to put this documentary on YouTube, but I will put a mini version of it on the main channel as an episode about motorcycling and adventuring, driving around Hokkaido. It's going to be like a ten-minute episode, but the documentary is going to be like two hours long. So we have so much amazing footage with 2.5 terabytes of data. Peter von Gomm, 2.5 terabytes of data we took, backed up every day using five or six different cameras, backed up. The audio. It was long days of filming and adventure. It was seriously we needed a vacation from the vacation. I crashed the next day after I got home. I couldn't do anything. We're just so excited.

14:00 John Daub: We found these two rewards, the echo bags and the tenugui, the headbands. We just thought it was something that was useful, something that you would use every day. And even the headbands, I think once you see like it could be used as a towel or something to wipe your face, or you could use it as a headband. There's so many things you could do with it, wrap things in it. It's such a useful thing that I thought definitely this is something that we could put in the campaign. I think there's some pretty good rewards, much different than the masks and the posters and the stuff we did last time. And I just want to say thank you all for backing this Kickstarter.

14:35 John Daub: Can I use all the way all the way down at the end of the dock? Peter von Gomm did a live stream here once, too. I think this is Shinagawa area. He got you Shinagawa Daiba Island, which is an island, I guess. One of the best places to come if you have a few hours to spend for lunch and walking around. And a very symbolic place for Kanae and I, because this is where we got hitched. Well, the reception party was here. And once again, Peter von Gomm was the emcee of that and totally roasted me. Never seen so many jokes fit in like a five-minute span to embarrass me. It worked.

15:12 John Daub: Kanae's there. Let's get a final comment. Arthur, thank you. Arthur Vandeley. I appreciate it, buddy. Thank you. All right. We got 705 people, I believe. Almost five million yen. Any final comments?

15:33 Kanae Daub: Because you're going to Hakodate now.

15:35 John Daub: Me?

15:38 Kanae Daub: You've won a trip to Hakodate.

15:42 Kanae Daub: Yeah. Thank you so much. I'm really looking forward to go to Hakodate with Leo. We can eat a lot.

15:50 John Daub: Yeah. We can eat.

15:53 Kanae Daub: Good words. We can eat a lot.

15:56 John Daub: And cooler there, right?

15:57 Kanae Daub: It's cooler there. But September is pretty cool.

15:59 John Daub: We're going to put that on the T-shirt for the next Kickstarter. Picture of Kanae and Leo. "We can eat a lot" surrounded by various foods of Japan. Sounds like a pretty good idea. We can go to the mountain, Hakodateyama (Mt. Hakodate). To the mountain there?

16:14 Kanae Daub: Yeah, that's possible.

16:16 John Daub: I'm pretty excited about it. Peter von Gomm will be traveling by himself because his family is working and going to school. But nevertheless, he is family, so Peter von Gomm will be with us. We will adopt him. Should be a fun time. Is Leo sleeping?

16:31 Kanae Daub: He's sleeping. Bye bye.

16:35 John Daub: Say bye bye to everybody.

16:36 Leo: Bye bye.

16:39 Kanae Daub: He's getting suntan.

16:40 John Daub: Leo, say bye bye.

16:43 Leo: Bye bye.

16:44 John Daub: He wants the mic. Bye bye. Bye bye. He's so sleepy now.

16:48 Kanae Daub: He's really sleepy. He's got a good suntan going on.

16:55 John Daub: You can see he's got my summer color. It's the Daniel LaRusso summer color.

17:08 John Daub: All right, everybody. I don't want to drag this out, but I just thank you so much for the amazing support. I guess Peter von Gomm and I are going to do this again. Let's see how the documentary goes. If it's really good, we'll consider doing it again. We rented these motorcycles from Rental 821. It's cool to be able to travel around. Nat, thank you for the comment. I'll read that, buddy, when I get back. Okay. Yeah, it's pretty cool to be able to travel and just jump on a bike wherever you go. The rentals have been really amazing. I didn't know you could rent motorcycles. Yeah, Kyushu next time, maybe. Or Shikoku. I guess Peter von Gomm and I will talk about it. Tohoku might even be possible. Tohoku will be great. They got so many beautiful places up there.

17:54 John Daub: This is something maybe we do once a year as an outing, once a season. I don't know if we'll do it as Kickstarters, but the backing here is just incredible. Shout out to Peter von Gomm. His Homicide Inc. podcast was recently featured on iTunes. It's really hard to break out as a podcast, and he's doing an amazing job. My parents are avid listeners because they listen on long rides to go up to visit my brother. So Peter von Gomm's voice amuses them with tales of murder. So you can check that out. Homicide Inc., wherever you get your podcasts. And once again, Only in Japan. That's what I do. And I got an adventure coming up soon. I'm going to Shikoku tomorrow morning to film an episode that's top secret. I guess I don't know. You're going to see me there anyways. But I rented a convertible. I'll be driving on an island near Shikoku, a small island, filming an episode that's coming out in October. And there's supposed to be a typhoon coming. But if the weather is okay, I'm going to be going to another island not too far away. You're going to find out because they're going to be live streamed anyways on Go because I take you with me.

19:09 John Daub: All right, everybody. Thanks so much. See you. Have a good day. Have a good night. And really wonderful, wonderful time. Just seeing what we could do with this project. And exceeded, I think, everybody's expectations because of the community and because of all you guys. Thank you, everybody. Bye bye. From Shinagawa.
