Japan Travel Tips
- Shopping for Toys: Instead of searching around Tokyo, order items like Tomica or Legos on Amazon.co.jp and have them delivered to your hotel. Delivery often takes less than 24 hours.
- Power Adapters: Visitors from North America do not need travel adapters (Japan uses the same plugs), though voltage is 100V instead of 110V. Visitors from Europe, UK, or Australia do need adapters.
- Theme Park Choice: For children under 12, Tokyo Disneyland is generally better than DisneySea, which caters more to adults and dates (especially on White Day).
- Masks: As of this video (March 2023), masks are optional inside the park, though some guests still wear them.
- Discounts: Check for regional discount coupons (e.g., Chiba Prefecture vaccination coupons) when booking hotels.
- Transport: The Disney Resort Line (Monorail) connects Maihama Station to the hotels and parks; it offers nice views of Tokyo Bay.
Japanese Language & Culture Notes
- Tanjoubi omedetou (誕生日おめでとう): Happy Birthday. Used by viewers in the chat to congratulate Leo.
- Otsukaresama (お疲れ様): A phrase expressing gratitude for hard work, often used when acknowledging effort (like parenting).
- White Day: March 14th, a Japanese holiday where men give gifts/chocolate to women in response to Valentine's Day. John notes this caused higher crowds at DisneySea.
- Terrible Twos: John discusses the cultural concept of the "terrible twos" (iyaiya period), noting the challenge of keeping kids safe near traffic in Tokyo.
- Character Names: Leo refers to female characters (Cinderella, Ariel) as "Mama," a common phenomenon for toddlers recognizing maternal figures.
Food & Drink Guide
- Park Cafeteria Lunch: Burgers and soup. Cost 5,400 yen (approx. $42) for three people. Located near "it's a small world" in Fantasyland. 00:03:00
- Birthday Cake: Celebrated at home with cake. Leo ate part of it before the cutting ceremony. 00:13:30
- Snacks: Strawberries and bananas mentioned as replacements for food Leo throws on the floor. 00:18:00
People
- John Daub: Host and father. Shares his perspective on parenting, travel logistics, and park experiences.

- Parenting a toddler in Tokyo requires extra vigilance near traffic and crowds.
- Mask mandates were relaxed in theme parks as of early 2023.

00:00:00 John Daub: Hey, guess what? It is Leo's birthday, sort of. We were at Tokyo Disneyland a couple of days ago and stayed at the Hotel Okura Tokyo Bay at Tokyo Disney Bay. It was a really great experience. And for Leo, it was a fun time. Say hello, Leo.
00:00:28 Leo: Hello.
00:00:30 John Daub: I saw a smile there. I wanted to share with you the video that we took and then Kanae is going to talk about a little bit what we did at Tokyo Disneyland. The rides we did, some of the things that... I want to hear from you also. What are your favorite rides at Tokyo Disneyland and what are the things that maybe are similar between the U.S. and here in Japan? Here's Kanae. How was it? Was it fun?
00:01:00 Kanae Daub: Yeah, of course. What did we do? Do you remember? Like a car. Yeah, we watched a lot of shows.
00:01:12 John Daub: A lot of shows? Yes. I said that because if you didn't remember, we have a video right here. What are we doing? This one? To remind you. Here we go. Here's our experience. That's when we got a chance to meet Mickey. Remember, Leo? Mickey, Leo. That's Mickey. There's some copyright music so we had to turn off some of the stuff here but it works out a little bit better. You weren't really smiling, Leo. Leo's kind of shell-shocked. Who's that man in the mouse outfit? And this is from... I put an Insta360 camera on the stroller and we got a chance to see from another angle which is kind of cool. Mickey's house was a 40-minute wait to get inside. I didn't think we wait for 40 minutes.
00:02:10 Kanae Daub: Really? I feel like it's 25.
00:02:13 John Daub: Yeah, sometimes the times are a little bit... they overestimated it. This is probably Leo's favorite ride. Yeah. The... Me too. Carousel, the merry-go-round. And this is the Insta360. I don't know why, it just kept spinning and I doubled the speed. This is right in the center of the park. It's kind of cool. Leo. Oh, this is LUNK. Remember this? Yeah, this is inside... right near the... it's a small world. Yeah, this is probably the best we're gonna get into Fantasyland for the cafeteria. Want some soup? Leo! The parade! There's Mickey right there. Of course, we had copyright music. The food ended up being 5,400 yen for lunch for three there which is... I guess that's okay. It's about $42 for those burgers and soup. It was kind of cool. We were on the elephant... the flying Dumbo ride when the parade started and got a glimpse of... everything going by. The parade was like 25 minutes and then done. There's Dumbo's butt in the way. And you can control them with an up and down arrow. You have to figure that out fast. Or else you had... a couple people ended up on the bottom. They're like, hey, why aren't these going up? Yeah, the parade's always kind of... I think they do three a day, right?
00:03:45 Leo: Mama. Mama, yeah, that's Mama.
00:03:50 John Daub: He calls... he calls Cinderella Mama. Mama. Oh, there's Daisy Duck. Yeah, Daisy Duck. After the parade... there's Donald. Then we get... then we take the monorail back. There's Space Mountain. Leo was asleep. But after the parade, a lot of the cast goes to the entrance. Maihama Station is on a man-made island. There's the Grand Nikko which is massive. But we stayed this time at the hotel with the best deal which was the Hotel Okura. There's the Hilton. That's also massive. We are now arriving at Bayside Beach. You get to the Toy Story Hotel between there. And then the Okura is the smallest. And that's where we stayed. Please exit to the left. Yeah, there's Okura Hotel. They had a deal. Chiba Prefecture gave us 12,000 yen in discount coupons too because we were vaccinated. There's Leo. We took a nap at the hotel and then went back to the park. Here comes the monorail. Leo, train!
00:05:10 Leo: You can see DisneySea on the left there. It's a volcano. Let the passengers off. We're in it. Leo, look! Wow! There we are. It's a short ride. There's only four stops on the monorail. There's just four stops. But the view is really nice. I like the fact you can see Tokyo Bay out there. There's a... I think... Oh, that's on the Chiba side. There's Kasairinkai Park on the other side. But this is going around Tokyo DisneySea, which we're now approaching. I think for kids though, Disneyland is better. DisneySea seems smaller and there's just not a lot of attractions for kids that are under the age of, I don't know, 12. But it's a great place for... I think DisneySea might have been more crowded because we went on White Day. White Day is like the Valentine's Day where the boys give the girls the chocolate. So there are a lot of people on dates here. There's DisneySea there. It looks kind of like Italy. The tickets were... You could have... Kanae sent... 8,900 yen for the tickets for adults, which is about $70 maybe. And Leo is free until three years old. Kids are free. This is the DisneySea station. The doors on the right, please stay clear. There's the Tower of Terror. And here's Disneyland, which hasn't changed much since the start of the year. We did get a chance to see what they were building in the new area. You can see a couple of the structures that are starting to go up. But really, it's just a great place to go. We got a chance to see some of the cast members again. Masks are no longer necessary inside the park. It's just up to you whether or not you want to wear them. Some people do, some people don't. It's up to you. I figure if we're going to go here and spend this kind of money, I want them to see our faces. Oh, this was shocking. He was not happy with Mary Poppins. I don't know why. I don't know why he didn't like Mary Poppins. This is the Pirates of the Caribbean, which is still under construction. But that didn't stop Leo from dancing. I think we know the tune in his head. It's not Mary Poppins. Why don't you like Mary Poppins, Leo? Today, Leo is two years old. How old is he? Leo, you're two years old. How do you feel? Are you ready for us to go see Mickey?
00:09:00 Leo: Yay!
00:09:02 John Daub: We got to see some of the shows here. And I thought I'd turn the volume for that because there's always copyright issues. But yeah, these shows are really nice because even for kids, they can kind of enjoy it. Leo really got into it. He's clapping, boogieing. You can get a seat number from the app. And there's Space Mountain. They did some renovations on it. And it's finished now. So you can go and see Space Mountain. Hey, big pig, thank you. It's beautiful with the sunset. And at the end, you know, we were walking out of the park and Leo had to get this balloon. Leo, that balloon is massive. Got a ball here, too. Leo, happy? I don't know. Don't lose it. That's 1,500 yen. Like a $12 balloon. And there's the end there. Leo, you remember that? That's your balloon. That balloon was 1,500 yen. I remember she told me, I said, okay, one balloon, please. You don't think about price tags when you go to Disneyland. Except like, it's like, what? Because that was, this balloon better last a month. This balloon has jewelry. Oh, that's why? Jewelry and many lipons. Oh, yeah. Where's the jewelry? Right here. They're right there. And the lipons. That's why? You, I think it was worth it because Leo kept saying that, I said, who is this? Leo doesn't know the characters' names. And he would just say, Mama. Who is this? Mama. Yeah, thank you. So in that sense, it was worth 1,500 yen. Who is this? Mama?
00:11:20 Leo: Mama.
00:11:22 John Daub: Did you hear this? Yeah. He thinks they're all Mama, but I think he thinks that Ariel is the most Mama looking. Yeah. So we came back. I tried to do a live stream yesterday at the park, but we decided two things happened. One, as soon as I left a certain area, there was no more signal. The parade had started and there was no way to do a live stream. Two, I forgot my gimbal was going to do it on Insta360, but there's third party apps. Don't play nice. I deleted the live stream on Insta360, but it remained on the YouTube channel. So I apologize for everybody who were waiting for that. And then number three, we just decided, let's just turn off the cameras and just spend two days just doing this. There's Leo's present. Oh yeah. Hold on a second. You know, I'm part one of many. ANA plane. But we got an ANA plane, a Tomica car, and... Hey! Ah! Godzilla's here. And yeah, that's a lot of... It's supposed to fly. Thank goodness you're not a giant. You would be merciless, not merciful to the planes in the sky. What did I think? Yeah, this is his second birthday. It was more fun, I think, because he could seem to enjoy a lot more. Well, it's true, the plane should fly. He's talking more and it's really great to go to Disneyland now that he likes to throw to see what will fly. Apparently not much other than the balloon. That's all part of it. Here's yesterday. We had cake time. Hey. No. No. No. Leo actually ate the cake before we cut it. You can see he ate the L. Cut the cake, Leo. Hey, do we have any left? Oh! Oh! Oh! He's a good boy. He's a good boy. Cut that. Wow! Wait! Oh! A little bit more. Because it's his birthday. Yeah! Your birthday boy gets extra cake. Oh! Oh! Oh!
00:14:00 Leo: Egg santrico.
00:14:05 John Daub: You didn't even say, that's delicious. You don't even have the peppers? Yeah, that was last night. Was it, it's key. Yeah. Sounds like an eternity ago. Mm mm! Hi. Say bye bye. Say, hi Elys.
00:14:30 Leo: Hi Elys. Hi Elys. Hi Ramzi Silent.
00:14:40 John Daub: Ramzi is here. Yeah. Ramzi Silent was never here. has he been Ginger? What, no? And, what thank you for that. And Elys, we love you buddy. Elys and David. We really love you. And uh, Siren, Tokyo, happy birthday Leo, John, you guys are gonna have more kids? Maybe. I think we have our handfuls with one. We'll try to do another episode where we kind of talk about the things that we learned because there was a lot of stuff that we learned over the last two years and it really, you know, it's hard work. Harder than I thought it would be but Kanae does most of it.
00:15:30 Kanae Daub: Yeah, it was hard ever in my life. This just first one year, first six months was uh... Yeah, it was hard. It's hard. So what is, what do you think Leo is interested in? He's two years old now. What's, what's his interest now? What does he like to do? He like, he loves the bus.
00:16:00 John Daub: Oh, buses, yeah. He loves buses. Car, excavator, garbage truck, Shinkansen. Garbage truck! We just were watching off the balcony the garbage man picking up trash. It was awesome. It's so fascinating and sometimes we'll go outside to the front door and we'll cheer for the garbage man and they like it too. Garbage man loves it. Anpanman, he loves Anpanman. Yeah. And uh, he likes Blippi. Blippi, unfortunately, yeah, Blippi. I'm jealous of Blippi. He likes hold my phone. Not as much as he used to, yeah. But he definitely likes Blippi on the TV, um, and helper cars. There's a lot of stuff. Bradshaw Studios here, thank you. Botan says hello. Botan, have you met, Alice has a new rabbit too, named Botan. Botan? Yeah, hello Botan. Hello Botan. So it wasn't a very big Christmas, uh, birthday party. We, again, like Leo's not really featured in the live streams as much because, you know, he's a little bit older than me. Because we kind of want to let him do his own thing now. You know, there's real life happening behind the scenes. I think everybody, everybody knows that. He's talking quite a bit now. Does he like ducks? The rubber ducks have been somewhat retired. They get kind of moldy. We had them in the bathtub, so, you know, thanks for that. But they might have, they might have been, separated into the burnable, or are they non-burnable? I'm not sure. I still got some left. Maybe they'll appear at the meetups. Do you want the ticket? Yeah. Show everybody. Oh yeah, oh yeah, show the tickets, Leo. Oh yeah, that's so cool. This is a Mickey train ticket. One day pass. One day pass Mickey's tickets for his birthday. So it has his birthday written on it. And now he has taken it. He put it away. He's putting it away. Inside my book. That's good. Good job. Two years. Yeah, so it's the second year. Now that we get into the hard part, which is the terrible twos. This is the time where kids have fits. They're hard to control. And you see some parents put their kids on a leash. I don't think I'll go that far. But living in Tokyo, the one thing that scares me is that there's a lot of cars going by. So it is really hard. You have to be extra vigilant. The moment you leave the house door, you have to be very careful. Even at the playgrounds, you don't know where Leo is going to be going. There's some really great playgrounds in the Chuo-ku, Taito area, this area, Chuo Park in the center. There's some really cool playgrounds in Tokyo. But yeah, we had a lot of fun when we went to Miyazaki. We were able to play a little bit more. That Von Chick is here. Happy birthday. I can't believe he's big already. I know. He's just had a health checkup and he's of good size. JKO Adventures reminds us, not always terrible. There's a lot of good stuff. I'm just saying it's more challenging than it was before. Which is hard to believe because the first two years were really challenging. But now he's talking more, which is fun. And he's throwing more things, which is not always fun. Dinner sometimes ends up on the floor. Touch, touch. Touch, touch. But it gets replaced with strawberries and bananas sometimes, which is maybe good. Probably should change that habit. I want to say thank you to everybody who has been visiting Japan. We have dozens and dozens of people coming now to Japan. I'm getting messages. Every day I get about 15 to 20. This is like a really good thing. I'm not complaining. 15 to 20 messages from people to meet up for coffee and for drinks. I think it's really going to be hard to do that. But we will try our best. I know Carrie is in town. As well as so many other people. And we saw Alex the other day. We have Alex's Berlin bus is here. You say hello. Say hello everybody. We just got a special performance. Yeah. Two Days to Go Aiken is here as well. Hopefully I can see you somewhere in the city. I'll do my very best to meet up with everybody. But I think we're going to do a meet up around March 23rd. Do a meet up somewhere. See the cherry blossoms. Tomorrow I'll be at the cherry blossoms to show you the indicator tree at Yasukuni Shrine. I'll be in Shinjuku tomorrow as well as at Yasukuni Shrine to take a look at the first cherry blossoms. It's always fun. Alright everybody. Thanks for watching. Thanks Vaughn. It's great to see you. And Alice. Love you guys. We'll give you a call as soon as we possibly can. It's really nice that we could share a little bit with you guys today. It wasn't at Tokyo Disneyland. We're not actually allowed to live stream there. But a little bit is okay. A little bit is okay. Tiffany writes in here. Tanjoubi omedetou to Leo. Omedetou and otsukaresama. Thank you. Yeah. John and Kanae as parents. Where could I get Shinkansen toys in Tokyo? Shout out to HelloHi821. Try editing videos like this. Somehow he breaks into my office. He can break into my office and then try and get it. It's like really really hard. Doesn't hurt as much. Alright. If you're in Tokyo. And somebody just asked me about Legos as well. This is a good one. This is what I recommend to you. Go on to Amazon.co.jp. Order it and send it to your hotel. And save the time that you would searching around the city for shopping. Just get it on Amazon.co.jp. You can search it in English. If you're looking for something in particular from Japan. There's a good chance that they have it. Just you can deliver it to your hotel. In Tokyo it never takes more than 24 hours. I can order stuff. It'll come from Osaka. It gets there within 24 hours. I ordered a monitor for my camera that's been resurrected. The Alpha 1 8K camera which I thought I lost. It works again with an external monitor. I ordered a monitor. It came in 6 hours. So that's my recommendation to everybody. In the basement of Tokyo Station there's a lot of gift shops as well. Including Tomica. I believe there's a Lego store in the basement of. I can't remember. But in the basement of the Yaesu side. There's a lot of gifts that you can find here. There's also Toys R Us. At some of the shopping malls. But it's really hard to find this stuff by going around Tokyo. Just deliver it to your hotel. That's my recommendation. You can also get Rakuten and anything else here. Leo you're not supposed to put that in there. You put the cup in the orange. In the bread. You put bread in there? It's kind of smart. You should put stuff in there. But you know. Maybe not. Bread. It's fun. A lot of arcades are still kicking Bobby Hawk. We'll talk about this tomorrow. I think there's a lot of stuff that we can talk about. I'm also going to be meeting my friends Patrick and Matt Alt again. Matt is the author of really great subculture books. As well as Patrick Galbraith. So I'm going to be hanging out with those guys tomorrow. And maybe we'll do a livestream as well. So there's a lot of stuff to do. Hopefully I'll see Carrie as well in the city. Do you need travel adapters? I don't think so for Japan. You don't need travel adapters from North America. But if you're coming from Europe or Australia or the UK or Asia you do. Japan has the same adapters as Japan as the US. But it's 100 volts instead of 110. But everything works pretty much the same. I'll do it. I'll do it. It's all good. I need some good sleep too Nightbot. Alright everybody. Do you have anything you want to add about Leo's birthday?
00:25:00 Kanae Daub: I'm so happy. Leo is 2 years old now. It's a hard life. But it's very fun and happy. Thank you for supporting us. Thank you for supporting our family.
00:25:30 John Daub: Well said. Thanks everybody for watching all the videos. Bobby Hawk thanks buddy. I'll be back tomorrow. I'll be in... A couple of areas of Tokyo so you get a chance to stream that. And a main channel episode is on the way. Oh and these postcards just went out. So I have about 40 of them left. I'm always trying to put up the postcard club here. I just sent these from the Tokyo post office yesterday. Last week. And they just started to arrive. It took 3 days to get to Canada. 3 days to get to Canada. Jason is that right? 3 days to get to Canada. Those are the snow walls. That's the snow walls of... Of... Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route in... This postcard... Leo got a hold of it. But it's one of the sites that I think everybody should go and visit. Especially if you don't see a lot of snow. It says 2 there. Alright everybody. Thanks so much for watching. I'll see you... See you tomorrow. Bye bye. Bye bye. You have to say bye.
00:27:00 Leo: Bye bye. Bye bye. Good day. Good night.
