Yokohama Zoo Experience ZOORASIA
Yokohama Zoo Experience ZOORASIA
Overview
John Daub takes viewers on a family day trip to Yokohama Zoorasia, a massive zoological park located about 50 minutes from Tokyo by highway. Originally planning to visit Yamanashi to see Mount Fuji and cherry blossoms, poor weather conditions force a change of plans, leading the Daub family to this expansive zoo instead. John compares Zoorasia favorably to the more central Ueno Zoo, noting its vast size, spacious habitats, and naturalistic layout that feels like an adventure rather than a traditional city zoo.
The video documents their journey through various zones, including the Australian Outbreak and the African Tropical Rainforest. John highlights specific animals like kangaroos, lions, and his favorite, the okapi. He also explores the park's amenities, from the food court offering Japanese-Australian fusion dishes to the unique "animal poo exhibition." Throughout the visit, John is joined by his wife Kanae and son Leo, who enjoys the playgrounds scattered throughout the park.
This episode serves as a practical guide for families living in or visiting Tokyo looking for a full-day excursion. John provides tips on transportation, costs, navigation, and the best times to visit to avoid crowds. The vlog captures the relaxed atmosphere of the zoo, the joy of family time, and the interesting details that make Zoorasia a standout destination compared to other urban zoos in Japan.

Japanese Language & Culture Notes

- Niku Udon (肉うどん): Udon noodles with meat, a common casual Japanese dish.
- Roast Katsu Kare (ロースカツカレー): Roast pork cutlet with curry rice, a staple Japanese comfort food.
- Katakana (カタカナ): John notes the poo exhibition uses English and katakana, suggesting visitors study katakana to read signs.
- Crow Culture: John notes crows flying freely, a common sight in Japan, sometimes interacting with zoo enclosures.

00:00:01 John Daub: Hey everybody! Welcome to Zoorasia. This is the Yokohama Zoo, not far from Tokyo. It's about a 50-minute drive. I'll show you on the map in a second. This is the playground in the middle of the park. Leo's taking a break here—that's my son—and I thought I'd take a break too and share the Zoorasia experience with you. How you doing, everybody?
00:00:25 John Daub: Let me show you on the map. Right there—you can see Tokyo in the center of your screen. At the bottom, that's where we are, that blue spot. On the highway, it's about 50 minutes. It took a little time to get here, but not too bad—no traffic. Here's the park map. Check this out. Compared to Ueno Zoo, it's massive—maybe five times the size. We've been here an hour, and I've been lost twice. I needed this map—I forgot I took a picture. We went through Australia land and saw kangaroos, which Leo liked.
00:01:26 John Daub: No monorail, unfortunately. It's a windy day—we were going to Yamanashi, but rain, wind, and clouds meant no Mount Fuji view. Sakura wouldn't have been great, so we switched and came here since I was away yesterday. All right, let me show you a montage of the last hour.
00:02:03 John Daub: This is the map—we're navigating out of Australia world. Japanese countryside, all these parks: Wakunomori, African tropical rainforest—that's where we're headed, ending the live stream in Africa. We walked in through the entrance; first thing, elephants—I was so excited I forgot video. Here's the lay of the land, kangaroos we saw. Massive creatures—look at those strong arms. One took a duty on the right. They look like boxers waiting for a fight. Habitats are large compared to Ueno Zoo in central Tokyo. They have a pretty good life here—they'd be better in the outback, but plenty of food.
00:03:08 John Daub: Red kangaroo, I think—some Aussie friends can confirm. We looked for the sea lion a while, then it showed itself. Boom. King of the jungle's here—from India. Pacing lion worries me—maybe the pen's not great. But it looks like Disneyland—tunnels to walk around. Our favorite so far: this monkey swinging leisurely. I was jealous.
00:03:51 John Daub: Here's the Australian grill. Let's see Australian food in Japan. Pancakes, French fries, curry rice, ramen, udon—niku udon with meat. Steak—that's the Australian bit, stuff from the barbie. Salads. Is that unagi? No, roast katsu, omurice, curry rice—roast katsu kare, my favorite. Order by vending machine. Not too Australian. But they had okapi right there. Weird monkey from Tibet—check the nose. Awesome.
00:04:58 John Daub: Walking around here's natural—no signal in spots. Liked strolling. Rushed for the live stream. That's a rundown of Zoorasia. Let's say hi to Leo and Kanae, then see okapi leisurely.
00:05:25 John Daub: Leo! Do you see them? Oh, there he is—they're coming down the slide! Whoa! Mama got her butt dirty. Wow, look at this dinosaur! Leo, be careful. How is Zoorasia? You like it? Yeah. Very good. I'm going to the okapi—you guys play longer? Yeah. All right.
00:06:53 John Daub: Let's walk to the Africa Zone. Short live stream, about 10 minutes. Okapi's 100-200 meters away. Park probably open year-round—no snow. 800 yen, about $6.50 US—cheap. Highway toll's the most expensive. Bus from station. Not crowded—maybe morning rain scared people. I'm lost—map time. We're here. Okapi, turtles, chimpanzees—awesome. Cheetahs, lions, giraffes. Massive park—half a day minimum.
00:08:27 John Daub: Okapi's a mascot. Last here 2007 or 2008—15 years ago, hasn't changed much. Renovating parts. Sean808's here—I was in Yokohama yesterday. Family day, promised Yamanashi, but compromising with another zone. Signal might be iffy. They make it Indiana Jones-like—adventure feel.
00:10:30 John Daub: Okapi looks half zebra, half horse. Let's find it. No animal shows I know of—feeding times posted. Better than Yoyogi Park for kids, bigger, more spacious, better food—harder to reach.
00:11:24 John Daub: There he is! Close-up. Shh, curb your enthusiasm. Okapi, it's me! Remember? Got a cousin on my desk. Just us—no one's around. Come on. Empty. Should've brought apples—what do okapi eat? Zebra stripes in back, but up close, not a zebra—confuses lions. One of my favorites. Lots in gift shop, but no good gifts.
00:12:27 John Daub: Okapi feeding and keeper's talk at 2 or 2:30—might return. Giving Leo 15-20 minutes playground—he'll sleep soon, near bedtime. Australian cafe? Nah. Little habitat details are cool.
00:13:33 John Daub: Jungle camp. One thing to show—bizarre: animal poo exhibition. Close eyes if you don't want. Why? Scientific, I guess—but bizarre. Poo close-ups? Nasty. Ruins lunch. Cute animals, but no. Like Michael Jordan pic with my poo—just 'cause human. Animals have different poos.
00:17:06 John Daub: Enchanted portal. Disgusting, but fascinating. Poo-talk friend, huh? English and katakana—study katakana, you're good. Savannah quick, then pick up Leo and Kanae. Crows out of cages—cruel? Near chimpanzees.
00:18:25 John Daub: Crows free, flying, pooing in caged birds—not right. Crows should be caged. Chimp area—probably no chimps. Big circle.
00:19:53 John Daub: Quick plug: latest main channel episode—doing well. Comment thoughts—I'll respond tonight if good. Looking forward.
00:20:21 John Daub: Wrapping chicken farm. Another playground—bring Leo. Thanks for watching—comment what you think of history. Brand new hotel? Renovated 1997—how world's oldest? Not building, business—same family 52 generations till 2017. Awesome slide—no height limit. Leo and I will do it. Park bus every 30 minutes, 200 yen to North Gate—cool.
00:22:03 John Daub: Eastern black-and-white colobus—beautiful. Sleepy? Awake one—hey buddy. Hello. Say hi—touch window. Elitist. More hair than me. Affection maybe.
00:23:48 John Daub: Some exhibits closed, renovating—looked awesome. Costco before returning car. Danny's last day—hope enjoying Japan. Special time—see you tomorrow.
00:24:35 John Daub: This is the experience. Paw prints on ground—cool Easter eggs for kids. Savannah—zebras. Lots of roaming area—blend well. Crows rule zoo prison—deal with them. Chasing one—he's faster.
00:26:43 John Daub: African Safari, savannah—playground this way. Jurassic Park feel at entrance—massive gates. Back to okapi—Dada's here! Leo! Here's jungle camp. Most elitist okapi. Playground direction.
00:30:29 John Daub: Wow—porcupine! Prickly. Leo, Kanae—Indiana Jones. Got bearings—playground. Crows taking over. There they are—made it back. Thought trouble. That's getting lost in Zoorasia. Cool park, different from Ueno—not far from Yokohama. Nice day off. Back to work. Questions? Comment. Check oldest hotel video—CEO interview fascinating. Hey Leo, can't go back! See everybody—have a good day.
