Akihabara Gachapon Binge Adventure

Summary

Akihabara Gachapon Binge Adventure

Overview

In this episode, John Daub takes viewers on a mission through the electric town of Akihabara, Tokyo, with a specific goal: to fill a post office box with gachapon (capsule toys) for Corey the Pirate, a young YouTuber from the UK, and his mother Pixie. Inspired by a recommendation from Patreon supporter Katayama, John navigates the streets lined with hundreds of capsule toy machines, selecting items he thinks a pirate enthusiast would enjoy.

The video captures the vibrant atmosphere of Akihabara in late spring, just before Golden Week. John explores various locations including street-side machine banks, the dedicated Gachapon Kaikan building, and alleys hiding secret shrines. Along the way, he interacts with fans, discusses local food options like tonkatsu and Mos Burger, and shares insights into the changing landscape of the neighborhood.

Beyond the shopping spree, the episode highlights the community aspect of John's channel. He engages with viewers live, takes requests, and even meets fans on the street, including a viewer from LA who just arrived in Japan. The journey culminates in a full box of quirky toys, ready to be shipped via EMS, showcasing the fun and randomness of Japanese capsule toy culture.

Japan Travel Tips

  • Gachapon Costs: Most capsules range from 300 to 500 yen. Some specialty items can cost more.
  • Coin Preparation: Many machines only take 100 yen coins. Use coin changers near machine banks, but be aware they can malfunction or run out.
  • Shipping: John uses EMS (Express Mail Service) to send the box to the UK, which takes a few days.
  • Akihabara Navigation: The area is dense. Look for machine banks in alleys and side streets for less crowded options.
  • Food Recommendations: Avoid low-rank Kobe beef sticks on the street if you want quality. For tonkatsu, look for shops with lines of locals.
  • Timing: Late April is warm, feeling like summer. Golden Week (late April/early May) is extremely busy; expect crowds.
  • Fan Interaction: John is approachable while filming, but respect his workflow during live streams.

Japanese Language & Culture Notes

  • Gachapon (ガチャポン): Refers to capsule toy vending machines. The name comes from the sound the machine makes (gacha) and the toy (pon).
  • Kei Cars (軽自動車): Light vehicles regulated by Japanese law, often boxy and small. Featured in the toy collection.
  • Akabeko (赤べこ): A traditional toy from Fukushima Prefecture, a red cow that nods its head.
  • Kakigori (かき氷): Japanese shaved ice dessert. John finds a toy press to make mini versions.
  • Taiyaki (鯛焼き): Fish-shaped cake, usually filled with red bean paste or cream.
  • Daimyo (大名): Historically a feudal lord; used by John as a tier name for high-level Patreon supporters.
  • EMS: International Express Mail Service, commonly used for shipping packages from Japan.

Food & Drink Guide

  • Mos Burger 00:03:41 - Japanese hamburger chain. John considers buying merch but notes they don't have them in England.
  • Kobe Beef Stick 00:20:33 - Street food near Don Quixote. John warns it may be low-rank beef despite the branding.
  • Takoyaki 00:28:54 - Octopus balls. John sees a plastic toy version.
  • Taiyaki 00:31:34 - Fish-shaped waffle cake. John spots a toy version and mentions real ones with cream or bean paste.
  • Tonkatsu 00:51:08 - Breaded pork cutlet. John recommends a legendary shop near Akihabara Station (approx. 2000 yen for lunch).
  • Kakigori 00:22:50 - Shaved ice. John finds a toy press to make mini versions at home.

People

  • John Daub: Host and creator of Only in Japan Go. Leads the gachapon hunt and interacts with the community.
  • Corey the Pirate: A young YouTuber from the UK. The recipient of the gachapon box.
  • Pixie: Corey's mother. Also a recipient of the box.
  • Katayama: Patreon supporter (Daimyo tier) who suggested the collaboration.
  • Debbie: Fan from LA who meets John on the street during the stream.
  • EricSurf6 (Eric Berg): Fellow YouTuber and vending machine expert mentioned by John.
  • Randy Santel: Food challenge YouTuber mentioned as returning to Japan.

Key Takeaways

  • Akihabara remains a hub for subculture, though some iconic buildings like Sega World have changed names (to GiGO).
  • Gachapon variety is immense, ranging from practical items (wire huggers) to weird novelties (glow-in-the-dark boogers).
  • Community engagement is central to John's content, blending shopping with fan meetups.
  • Street food branding can be misleading; local knowledge helps identify quality spots.
  • Shipping costs and logistics (EMS) are viable for sending gifts internationally from Japan.

00:00:04 John Daub: Welcome to Akihabara here in Tokyo. What you see in front of you are a lot of gachapon machines, and I mean a lot of them. This is just the tip of the iceberg here in Akihabara. There are tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, dare I even say millions of capsules all around the city. There's the Sobu Line going up ahead. We just missed it. But you can see the iconic billboards and buildings of this area which make it stand out from the rest of Tokyo. It's just so colorful, full of manga, anime, all sorts of maid cafes. Part of the culture of Japan, the subculture.

00:00:45 John Daub: Alright, so in this episode we're gonna be getting about three, four, five thousand yen worth of capsule toys to fill this box right here. This is a post office box and we'll be doing it for Corey the pirate and his mom Pixie. It's a pretty cool story. There's another YouTuber named Corey, he is a pirate. He lives in the United Kingdom. And Katayama, who's one of our daimyo supporters on Patreon, brought him to my attention. I've watched his channel, and he does some unboxings of things. He's an inspirational little kid, and I think that you should go check out the channel here. This is his channel right here on the right side.

00:01:42 John Daub: I wanted to bring them with me, and you guys, to Japan to get some of these capsule toys. Now, I have to be honest with you, I don't know what kind of capsule toys that Pixie and Corey would want. So I really wanted to do this live to get your help, how to spend this money. I've got a pocket full of coins and there's a coin changer in there to get even more. So I want to thank everybody for being here with me. Do you see the one right there? This is the one that I first saw. This is the coolest one. This is the one where he had Jack Sparrow actually send him a message, which is so cool. So that essentially makes Corey part of the crew. Very cool. Johnny Depp is doing some really amazing stuff. And we are going to right now, too, as we try to size up these gachapon. There's just some weird stuff.

00:02:42 John Daub: I'm really having a lot of trouble. I've been here for about five, ten minutes trying to find some stuff that they may want. And they're all kind of weird. Like, you think Corey will want bugs? And I don't even think that would get through Immigration and Customs, to be honest with you. I think they would stop it, open it up, and think it's real bugs and then throw them all away. That's what I would do. And I see Brandy is here. Being in Hawaii, I send her potato chips all the time. And the Customs confiscate it because there might be some kind of powder on it. Oh, this is kind of cool. Like, the stuff that interests me probably don't interest these guys here. This is like ramen and gyoza, like little signs that you can wear. Here's some Mos Burger. They don't have that in England.

00:03:41 John Daub: Let me know if you see something interesting. I'm just going to get a bunch of it. Literally, I've got about 30 100 yen coins right here. The Mos Burger one is high on the list here. What about these cars? Or cats in different poses? That looks really cool. Trains. Look at these cars here. Look at the backs open up. That's pretty cool. So these are Japanese cars. They're the kei cars (light vehicles), and they look like cubes because it says cube. Here's some Shinkansen. These are like characters from, um, this is Akabeko (nodding doll from Fukushima). These are like characters from Japanese folklore. That's cool. Here's packs of sugar. Like, I don't know what to get. The cars look pretty cool. Bowls of ramen. What? From Ringer Hut. Maybe not my favorite adult family restaurant, but.

00:04:43 John Daub: Oh, here's one. It takes your temperature. See if you know you have a fever. Um, no. Maybe I'll send one of those. Those are kind of cool, I guess. And, uh, here's little tackle boxes for stuff. Like, I don't know if these are actually cool or not, but 300 yen for that is kind of a lot. Look at this one with a clock. All right, let's go for one of these, okay? Now, we have to use this money wisely because, you know, I have to pick the good stuff here. So this is actually like a character clock. Let's just get one of these here.

00:05:32 John Daub: Oh, it's not even taking my money. Oh, this is the scary thing with these machines. Don't tell me I already have to go and get the management. Sometimes you can mess around with the inside and then it'll work. All right, at least it gave me back my money. So, number one is a fail. Broken. All right, let's go. Let's see what else we got here. How about some weird sharks? Yeah, you know what? I think you need a weird shark. This one actually took them all. Boom. All right, I don't know what it is. I just know it came in a capsule and I'm not opening them because they're not for me. All right, so this goes into the box.

00:07:17 John Daub: All right, we got to fill this thing up here. Hopefully, Corey and Pixie will be able to watch this and then figure out what exactly this is. I don't know what the machine was that it came from. This looks kind of weird. These are ghost T-shirts. T-shirts that are haunted. But it's sold out. When it's sold out, this thing pops down here. Hey, Air to the Run. I was looking for Demon Slayer. Okay, we'll look for that. Torotoropoco is here. Bruntania, how you guys doing? All right, let's put this to good use. Here's some beetles. All right, let's get them a car here. It's 1/64th the size of a real beetle.

00:08:18 John Daub: Okay, here we go. Boom. Oh, it's a blue one. This is so cool. Okay. It's a blue beetle. So I'm gonna put that in here. All right. We're getting this box filled up here for Corey. What else we got here? Here's some cats. These cats look pretty cool. Donut cats. This cat has a donut shirt. All right. We gotta go in for that one. I will look for some Demon Slayer stuff but I might have to go to another machine bank. Okay this is the cat it says cookies very nice. Okay goes into the box. So mad you guys see any? Here's some Harry Potter Harry Potter memorabilia. They've got the Harry Potter theme park uh opening up a new one in on um the sixth of uh sorry June 16th I believe in Nerima.

00:09:29 John Daub: Here's a mobile soup Gundam I'm not sure what that what that is. Here that's girly stuff like if I was a pirate I would want maybe some monsters from the deep so we already got a shark see here One Piece is pirate merch that's a good that's yeah actually that's right so let's look for some of that I i just haven't seen it recently you might have to walk around the street to find something here at this one it's like a fake fingerprint scanner I think a pirate needs to have something like this right so you get this ring that you wear and then you have to put the ring into this thing to open it up that sounds really cool all right let's get a couple of those if we get a cool one maybe we don't have to get another one that's really cool oh wow okay yes yes we got the one with the skull look at this.

00:11:07 John Daub: Are we gonna get two because i don't know i pronounce Gundam the way people told me to do it but i'm not sure what it is but i'm gonna try to get it i'm gonna try to get it what do you call it that's philly fire ringers i didn't know what the best word was since i left getting aøremm do i look like someone who collects merch from Gundam at age 49 really all right let's try another one we need this one just too cool don't tell me i got a repeater oh it's the um this one with the fingerprint oh that's so cool too all right all right fingerprint one in here all right box is filling up pretty nicely all right no girly stuff how about one of these temperature checkers i don't even think this would really work cool. Walk around and know your temperature all the time. I'd be taking temperature of random people on the subway though. I'd get in trouble with something like that. Excuse me, sir. Can I check your temperature? Slap.

00:12:08 John Daub: Um, all right. I don't think a pirate would want one of these rings. What do you guys think? Yeah, I'm not, I'm not knocking on 60 year olds that collect Gundam memorabilia. I'm just saying I don't, I just don't have, I don't have time or space to collect much of anything. And everything I get, I give to Leo and Kanae. That's the way it works. This is so creepy. I think that this is something that you'd want on your desk. I don't even know what it is. Does anybody know this? It's a keimushi no mori (forest of guardian insects?). It's a protector. That looks like something that would be quite valuable, huh? Should we get one of these? These things, they look a little creepy though. Do they glow in the, oh, they glow in the dark. Sometimes on the side you can see, but they've done a good job of hiding it so you wouldn't be able to see what it is.

00:13:06 John Daub: What is that? Like boogers? They have boogers. Like little, oh no, no. They're like little, they're a kaeru (frog). Okay. They look like little boogers, like glow in the dark boogers. What? Weird, man. All right. We're going to just keep walking here. There's some more, um, I'm going to need some more coins. So let's go and do that. I think in order to fill this box, we need to get some more coins. So let's, let me, let me do that. I had 3000 yen in coins, but we got some, uh, super chats here, which, uh, let me cash that in. I think it's out of coins.

00:14:09 John Daub: As soon as that, took a foot, then I, all right, we got some, some issues here. They took my thousand yen. Maybe I cleared them out when I changed all the money from before. I guess someone's here. All right. Bear with me. The coin changer took my thousand yen note. Sorry. I put 1000 yen in it and then I took out the coins. When you did it, it didn't come out. Thank you. Thank you very much. All right. We're back in game. Sometimes you crash the car, you gotta take a detour. All right. Thank you to the camera staff. They got us some more coinage. So let's go down the street, try to find another machine. We still got like about 2,000-3,000 yen worth of stuff, coins. And I only have five gachapon, which is well short of our target. But thankfully, you don't have to go that far. Just look right here on the side of the alley. We have a bunch of gachapon.

00:17:35 John Daub: So let's see what we can find. Sometimes you find different stuff in different areas of Akihabara. What would be interesting? I'm not sure. I'm looking for... Here's a... That's One Piece, right? Yeah. Here's some bakery items. Like keychain bakery items. These machines look like they're in better shape because they're protected. The other ones look like they're kind of beat up. Same stuff. Look at that helicopter. Oh, yeah. These look like really authentic helicopters. Do you think they fly? No. I don't think Corey would like that ring either. Amy LMAO. Right in here. Is this close to the secret shrine? It is. Actually, we could make a quick stop there. And I think I didn't see anything that was different than the other one. So we're going to eventually we're going to get to Gachapon Kaikan, which is where I filmed like many, many times. And we can go in there and grab some stuff.

00:19:02 John Daub: But my mission here, our mission is to fill this box for Corey and send it to him today. Shout out to Katayama, who introduced me to them. And I even got a photo here. I can share with you. Boom. There's Corey and his mom, Pixie, and they're celebrating the 100,000 subscriber award, which is very cool. Oh, there's some Gachapon in the alley here. Hold on. Let's see what we got. These are kind of different, different look to them. Wow. So these are more like memorabilia. Let's see if they have any One Piece because One Piece is a pirate. No, I didn't see anything. It's mostly like I don't know, unless you read a lot of manga. I don't think you would recognize any of these people. There's a Conan, the detective. All right. Keep going.

00:20:33 John Daub: All right. Here's some Gachapon on the side of the street here. Wow. I am a Doraemon. Is Doraemon big? Oh, here's some more monkey stuff. But I want some more hardcore things. No, I don't see anything. All right. Just keep going down the street here. Wow. It's changed so much. This is the base of the Don Quixote in Akihabara. They have a lot of street food on the corner here. This one writes in here Wagyu, but I don't think it looked. So the thing is here, I want you guys to understand this. You see, it's this Kobe beef stick in the center of your screen. That's the big one. That's like not a five quality Kobe beef. So you're not getting the same kind of stuff. It probably is Kobe beef, but it's like low rank Kobe beef. So that's why the price is cheaper. So it's kind of like you're just paying for a brand, even though that's not really. It's going to be like a really like a chewy and not so tender piece of meat.

00:21:42 John Daub: I found some over here on the side of the Don Quixote. Let's go see what we got. Just saying, like, I don't think locals are buying that because this is Kobe beef, because most people know that this brand. All right. We got a bunch here. These look slightly different. Let's get a closer look in. OK, these are like echo bags. Actually, I could put in some of my own merch. I have I made up. Peter and I made out some echo bags. Oh, look at this. This is kind of cool. These things hug wires. What should let's get a wire hugger with this. I'm going to put the box up here and let's get a wire hugger. There's six different kinds of wire huggers. We're just going to go for one because it's cool enough to get one. Oh, there you go. There's a little wire hugger. Hey, buddy, you're going to be released in the United Kingdom.

00:22:50 John Daub: All right. What else we got here? That's a little creepy. Mini gaming box. That looks kind of cool. Do they actually work? It's only one way to find out. Mini gaming box. Whoa. These are like retro cool. Do you think I should get two of these? I wonder what the game is. This one is like Frogger or something. Whoa, that's so cool. I can't believe it looks like it actually works. It's got some weight to it. That was just 300 yen. So I get two. That looks like it's something that's worth it. I hear some like Shirokuma stuff. That's a Kagoshima dessert. Here's a kakigori (shaved ice). What? That's a kakigori press. So you can put an ice cube in there and make your own ice. Really? All right. You know what? I can try one. It's summer is coming up. Wow. So summer is coming here. This is a kakigori ice press. So apparently you can put an actual ice cube in here and make your own kakigori. Wow. All right. We're getting there. We got to fill this box up with stuff.

00:24:35 John Daub: I don't see any One Piece or Demon Slayer. Did you guys see any? No, I don't. It doesn't look like Demon Slayer. Recently Demon Slayer stuff has not been out. You know? All right. This is the way to get to the secret shrine. Somebody had asked about it. You got to go. See that balloon? They're not supposed to actually put that there because this is a literal street. This is an actual alley. Yeah. But they put the balloon there and they're not. That's actually somewhat illegal, I believe. Because when I was doing research on it, this isn't considered a public road grandfathered in. So somebody should tell the owner. It's not going to be me because I'm not. I'm not looking for a fight. Although if Corey the pirate were here, I'd be looking for a fight. I'm not. I'm like passive aggressive. Maybe. I would like hit and run away. And then when you're not looking, I would come up and do it again, perhaps run away by stealth.

00:25:50 John Daub: There's a Carl's Jr. All right. We're going to go in the alley here because I know that there's some gachapon and then we can cross the street to the Gachapon Kaikan and see if we can find some stuff here. Look at these cats here. They're construction cats. Construction cats. All right. Down this alley. All right. So I've taken all of you guys here before. This stuff looks like adult stuff. So we're not going to get any of that for Corey. There's a construction cat again. What? And there's like a Kinnikuman in gold, which looks pretty good. Kinnikuman means muscle man. All right. Let's go. Just take a quick look. See, this is the shrine right here. So in the street here, I discovered this like 15 years ago with my friend Patrick on an episode of NHK when we were filming it. There's a little teeny shrine in the corner here. It's been renovated, but you can see it's this is not your ordinary street. But yeah, it's still here. Still here.

00:27:21 John Daub: All right. I did not see anything that floated my boat. So that's so cool. There's an absence. Sometimes these makers have like contracts and forms and limited runs and things like this. It's very strict with the trademarks and all that. All this other stuff. And they only do gachapon sometimes when they're doing promotions for movies, things like that. And yeah, you know, I don't see any Demon Slayer stuff at all. But there's only there's one place where you could figure this out for sure. Straight to get there. Now, it is a really warm, sunny day. Spring is here. In fact, feels more like summer. Got shorts on. Sandals walking around the city. It's not easy to find the best gachapon. In fact, if we can't find anything, we still have one last course of action in front of the Yodobashi camera near Akihabara Station. There are a bunch of gachapon machines.

00:28:54 John Daub: Let's have a very quick look-see into this place here. What is this one? A battle game. This looks kind of cool. It fell down. Whoa. Because it like spins and makes noise. Look at these air conditioners. Oh, hey, English muffins. Little vending machines. Should I get one? Oh, these are cool. Push it and it says win or lose. Happy or sad. Let's get one of these. I think it's a win or lose one. Oh, no. Is this the thumbs up or the thumbs down? Oh, that's cool. What else they got here? They got like car remotes. What? What? That doesn't make any sense. So it looks like a car remote. So you can pretend like you have a car. I don't know. Let's keep moving. Takoyaki thing is kind of like just a plastic piece of takoyaki. I don't know how interesting that is. I think of stuff in terms of like playability.

00:31:34 John Daub: It's actually looking pretty cool. We have nine in here. So you have space for a few more. Send one to EricSurf6. I think Eric is the vending machine king. No one has done episodes on vending machines more than our friend Eric Berg over there at EricSurf6. Oh, look at the taiyaki over there. Oh, I'm getting really hungry. This is in the shape of a fish, a tai fish (sea bream-shaped waffle). They put in cream or red bean paste or sometimes sweet potato or whatever. Float your boat. They probably have chocolate too. Now we're going to cross the street. Go over to the Gachapon Kaikan. How much we got? Wow, I've gone through like $40 already? It's crazy. Oh, my God. There's actually some really cool gachapon in here. Like useful stuff that you could use in everyday life. All right, here we go.

00:33:13 John Daub: Does anybody know what station we're at? It's not Akihabara anymore. Give you a hint. Starts with an S. Nobody? Really? Suehirocho. Yes. Okay, Kelvin got it. Suehirocho. Very good. So now we're walking back towards Akihabara Station with a box full of gachapon. This is going to be so much fun. I can't believe we're going to be sending this box to Corey and Pixie and maybe they'll unbox it. That'll be a lot of fun. We didn't open it. So if you want to see the unboxing of it, you're going to have to go to their channel. I'm going to send it EMS so it gets there in just a few days. Oh, there's a Mos Burger here. That was here before. We didn't see any pirate stuff, but the signal wasn't so great here. I've got a friend who owns a shop that has a lot of gachapon, so I'm guessing that this might be the one. Boom. All right. I don't have access to film inside of here. I'm not sure if he's going to want me to, if I'm okay to do that, but we shall go and see.

00:34:55 John Daub: Usually the best stuff is kind of outside right here anyways. I don't know what that is here. You can get hiking boots? I can't wear them. There's some Yoshinoya because they want you to come in and get more. Oh look, there's some sleeping cats. Sleeping people. Hug cot. Oh, that's Demon Slayer. Okay. Boom. These are Demon Slayers that hug wires. I'm sold. Or wire huggers. That's a small one. This is kind of like Prince of Stuff. And those are life-sized realistic sharks. Here's one. These are ninjas that hang on that you can attach to stuff. This one looks like right up my alley here. These are cats with funny faces. Oh my gosh, that's pretty full. Whenever you see cats, you know it's a good idea. All right, we have 300 yen left. I just went on my wallet and pulled out some more. I'm going to go get some more. So what else we got here? We have one more.

00:37:50 John Daub: Look at this angry cat. Oh look! Look at this one. It's animals grooming themselves. Oh, we got to get one of these, right? Animals grooming themselves. What do you think? There's a lion. There's a parakeet. A panda bear. Self-grooming. All right, let's do it. Oh, it's the panda. It's a panda doing makeup. Other in the series is a rhinoceros. And a parakeet. And a golf swinging gorilla. But I think everyone wanted the hair grooming lion. Oh, and there's hats for doggies. Aww. It says here, arrr. Arrr. Sounds like a pirate. All right, that's quite a massive haul here of gachapon. It's a good collection. My son, Leo, is two years old. He does not need more gachapon. Trust me. Every time I see something that he could press a button that makes a ringing noise, it's both a blessing and a curse. It's fun for him for like a month. But it's fun for me for one minute as he goes around the house going ding dong, ding dong, ding dong. Drives me crazy.

00:39:45 John Daub: I think Demon Slayer stuff is not good, I think. You have to buy the stuff. I'm just surprised that I didn't see much. So here's some Demon Slayer stuff here. But unless you're a Demon Slayer fan, I don't think it really has a lot of value. So I don't know if Corey is a Demon Slayer fan. Something looks really cool. Pigeons. Look at that pigeon with the... Oh, did you see that pigeon with the hat? No. The pigeon had a pirate hat on him. I don't have enough cash anymore. I've spent all my money. All right, I got a 500 yen. Look at this. This is the new 500 yen coin. It's bicolor. Yeah, bi. See that? Is it coming in focus? Come on now. Now. It's bicolor. All right, let's see. The copyrighted music is not making me happy though. Let's see here. I want the pigeon pirate hat.

00:41:32 John Daub: All right, just a quick look-see because we only have one more shot at this everybody. These are cats in a box and that's kind of cool. So there's a cat and he's in the box. They go for the pigeon with the cowboy hat. There's a high risk, high reward. This is for cats. Cat flower. These are reaching cats. They're reaching high for something. This is a cat snow dome. They say cats on a wall. All right, so far everyone's saying go for the pigeon cowboy. All right. Okay, it looks like we're going to have to go for the pigeon cowboy. These animals are showing here. These are pigeons. Pigeons that have hats. All right. 400 yen in there. Turn clockwise. Boom. We got here. This is not the one I wanted. How dare you? He's cute though. It's a hat wearing pigeon who had better days. So we gambled and we lost. But did we? Did we really lose? Something says that we didn't lose. That is a lot of gachapon.

00:43:29 John Daub: Katayama. This is a great idea. Thanks. Thanks for that. And I'll be sending this out today. I'll be sending this out today. Thanks for the gachapon. See if you can find any golf ones. Oh, okay. That's a hard one. I don't... I haven't seen... The golf culture is... The subculture is kind of over. You don't see many people in that fashion anymore. That doesn't mean it doesn't exist. It just means it's a lot harder to find. Pigeon with hat. It's not... It would have been better if it was a pirate hat. Sometimes you gamble, you lose. Just... It's the risk we all take. All right. I'm walking down the street here. If you see something, you can come up to it. If you see something, you can stop. But I'm out of coins. And I just have 10,000 yen notes. Subrequire some changing. But if we do see something that we must get, well then, the die has been cast in that case. You must stop and get it. I think there's space for one more, possibly.

00:44:58 John Daub: This is going to be so much fun. This is going out EMS, too. So they're going to get this in like a few days. I'm going to go get it. Yay! They're building something here on the right side. The metamorphosis of Akihabara from 2020 to now is just incredible. Some of the old buildings do last, like the colorful ones on the right side. But we lost the Sega World. It's now GiGO. Just a lot of identity has changed here. And it's not quite... It's just not the same. But totally is the same. I don't know. It's hard. Part of life. Oh, there is some big news. My friend Randy Santel is gonna be coming back to Japan. I think I'll be able to find some food challenges for him. Will I partake? Maybe not. He's a professional. I'm a wannabe professional, which makes me sort of nothing really. Makes me a YouTuber.

00:46:19 John Daub: Alright, down there is where you get all the maid cafes. There's some other vending machines here. Let's cross the street here and we can go underneath the Sobu Line. Take one more look. Maybe we'll find something on the side of the street. I have literally 200 yen in my pocket. But I have another 100 yen coin inside my wallet I saw. We would have spent close to 40 some dollars. 40, 50 dollars. I'm not sure. That's pretty cool. This is pretty cool. I'll show you. We'll do a quick review on this. This is all for Corey here. If you don't know his channel, it's called Crackin' the Box. Go over there and check out some of the videos. Wow, I didn't see anything. Is that goth? Is that considered goth? I don't know if that's considered goth or not. I just know it's copyrighted music so I have to get out of here. All right, I think we're safe.

00:47:52 John Daub: There's a link in the description to the two channels as well. So you can go over there and check out the content the one video that everyone will be curious Johnny Depp sent Cory the pirate a video. It's pretty cool to see that one and there couple of the YouTubers that send some messages. So all really good stuff. There's some new toy stores that have opened up here so for me walking around for certain live Street shout out to the three nice people who stopped to say hello. It was I was setting up and a nice Japanese guy came and said hello to every time I come here, it's nice to see people who recognize you I guess I'm here a lot. It's pretty awesome. Um, here's some more sleeping cats that's kind of cute in different poses. Look at that one. He's like his neck is up on the wall there I don't know. I don't see any like goth stuff that doesn't look like goth it just looks like and then some vending machines this radio Tokyo Radio Department Store has been here for a very long time.

00:49:38 John Daub: It's in a building from I would say like the late 70s early 80s and there's some gems inside of there. Mostly family-run businesses where they're selling parts that you won't be able to find anywhere else because they just don't make them. Oh, you certainly did. Oh, wow, it popped you on my YouTube. Oh cool. I'm gonna wait to meet you. Boom, thank you so much. You're welcome. You got your gachapon. I do we're doing it for Corey here. Did you see any goth ones by any chance? I just literally got here like a few hours ago. Oh you did good job I am quite a bit here. You wanna say hi to everybody? Debbie from LA. Debbie from LA. Hey, welcome to Japan. Thank you for the info. You guys are awesome. I always watch you with that stuff. How was it getting through immigration? I got here last night around 10pm. Yeah, 30 minutes through. You still had to do that at the QR code. We had a delay for 8 hours. I should've been here until 11. But I am here.

00:51:08 John Daub: I'm here quite a bit. Alright, here's this picture. Yay. Thank you so much. You're welcome. I'm so happy I found you on your first day. Maybe you'll find me again. What do you recommend eating for lunch? Mos Burger? There's a tonkatsu place which is world famous I think. It is to me. It usually has a line out the door. Is it far? It's not very far away. You go to the not this crosswalk but the next one make a right and then you'll see a shrine on the right side and it should be the next street over and usually there's a line of people at the door on the same side of the street after I make a right. Yeah, I could take you there. Oh yeah, okay let's do it quick. We're taking some people with us. No, I gotta get back. I have a video to release. Oh my gosh on chicken. I was at your house when it was raining. I was like I'm gonna try to catch him. I didn't know I was coming here until last night. But maybe just deep down you knew this is where I wanted to come.

00:52:28 John Daub: You can look for me at the hotel at the station. And I have you on alert and you popped up and I'm like oh crap I need to get to you. It was perfect. Yeah. They're coming with me till the end here. I'm kind of pleasantly surprised to see you. The leisure land is still here. Mostly UFO catchers. But I thought they would go under. They're still here. They're kind of off of the path here. I think we can go down here. Oh no hold on it doesn't matter. This is a new building. This wasn't here before. I just was there yeah. That's the next street over after the Don Quixote which you can't miss. I did just see some people who found it which is interesting I guess the word got around. East Coast yeah. Moved a lot Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey New York, Ohio. You guys started catching you right after I got back from. I went to um. Oh really. This would be it. Oh my gosh that's a long line. This is I just showed a bunch of viewers too but this is my favorite tonkatsu place. They make it in front it's still crackling when it comes out. It is so crispy and inside is juicy. But you do have to wait. Okay. Oh yeah let's get a photo. I'm not good at selfies though. I don't have long arms. One two three four. Thank you John. You're welcome. I'm sure I'll find you. I'll be out here. Bye bye.

00:54:27 John Daub: Alright so I just introduced you guys to a place where you should eat as well if you get a chance. I hate introducing popular places like that because they already have a line. It's not in any guidebooks that I know of but that tonkatsu place is legendary. I have not had I've seen them in I've seen their refrigerator I've seen them how they make it. It is always a line. It is always so good. And it is slightly pricey. Maybe 2000 yen for lunch. But it is so worth it. I don't eat pork like bacon. Alright what do we got here. There is something interesting. Let's see it. This one looks interesting. It is a salaryman with a chainsaw head. That's actually very cool. Let's do it. Chainsaw head. How do you talk to him. Alright everybody. It looks like the box is full. I'm not seeing any golf stuff. So Corey let me break it down for you what we got here.

00:55:51 John Daub: On the side of the streets we got this Tokyo manhole cover. Let's break this down here. This looks like it is really interesting. This is a toy spinner I guess you push it and it has a battle I'm not even sure how it works. There is directions in here usually they are very visual so you can figure it out. This one is quite heavy. This is a panda bear doing makeup. I don't know. This is a pigeon wearing a hat. We tried for the pirate and we lost. This one looks like it has a battery in it. It will tell you if you win or lose. That's basically all it does. But that's the fun of Gachapon. This is a car. This one is what is this one here. I forget. A character that connects to a wire. Yeah there you go. This is a Demon Slayer. I'm not even opening it up so you are going to have to figure that out. This one is a shark. A void. Oh this is cool. This requires a ring. You have to put this ring on and with this ring you can unlock the box but you must be wearing the ring in order to do it. I can't remember what this is. Oh this is the cat. I think there might be a couple more in there. This is a kakigori machine. You can make your own kakigori just put an ice cube in there apparently and you can get shaved ice. Quite bizarre. Alright there you go Gachapon. So each one has a story.

00:57:32 John Daub: And I'm sending all of the Daimyo supporters for my Patreon page your boxes were sent yesterday so you should be getting notifications as they make their way and the race is on whose box will appear first. Lately Canada has been quite quick because they get the mail in 2 or 3 days. I can't believe it. This is a mystery vending machine. I know the CEO. I've talked to him many times before in good times and in bad. He is so smart. He converted old book vending machines into mystery vending machines where you can win all sorts of stuff. There's like a Nintendo 3DS. There's a bunch of electronics that you can win. Comes out here. But each one costs 1000 yen. So that's quite an investment. You might not get what you wanted. Let's just say there's a high probability of that. But if you do you feel kind of happy. That's the point of Gachapon. For one moment you feel happy. So for right here we have about 12 moments of happiness for you from our community to yours buddy.

00:58:58 John Daub: I hope you guys have a great day. Let us know when this arrives. Hit up Katayama. See which one you like the best. And if they all stink I'll be back here to get some more cause there's so many more. We were just scratching the surface. There's some more right there to go underneath the rail here at Akihabara. Thanks everybody for watching and for the support. I'll see you in another livestream probably tomorrow as we end April and move into May. Tomorrow starts Golden Week which is the holiday. Japan's gonna be crazy busy. And I'm gonna stay here in Tokyo. I have a lot of stuff to do. I have a guest appearance on a TV show on the 5th to go in and talk about all of the travelers that are coming into Japan right now which is gonna be cool. I'll let you guys know more information on that on Discord server. You can catch me live on TV here in Japan if you are watching. I think I'll probably be on around somewhere between 12:30 and 1:30 usually. I'm on this news program. It's actually a pretty big program. I gotta speak all in Japanese. And one time I was on a TV show and one time I made a really huge mistake that was quite embarrassing. But the sponsors didn't think it was too bad. They called me back and I was on the show again. So not too shabby.

01:00:30 John Daub: There's Radio Kaikan. Survival. After I did this show. And by the way this news program is live. After I did this anything I did live became I was no longer nervous anymore. Because when you're in front of an audience of millions live on a news program speaking a second language everything after that it's pretty easy. It's pretty easy. Alright there's Akihabara station. This is a great place to end it. Thanks everybody see you tomorrow.
