Shinkansen Coffee Vending Machine Experience at Tokyo Station
Shinkansen Coffee Vending Machine Experience at Tokyo Station
Overview
John Daub visits Tokyo Station to experience one of the most unique vending machines in Japan — the Shinkansen-themed coffee vending machines found on the platform. These specialty machines offer coffee blends named after different Shinkansen (bullet train) lines: Kodama, Hikari, Nozomi, and the eye-catching Dr. Yellow, along with specialty drinks like chocolate banana and iced matcha latte. What makes these machines special is the 90-second brewing process displayed on screen, the ability to customize sweetness and cream levels, and the collectible-themed cups that match each coffee variety.
The video takes viewers through the complete experience: ordering, watching the brewing animation, tasting different blends, and interacting with fellow coffee enthusiasts. John also explores the challenges of finding coffee at Tokyo Station, visits alternative JR-operated options like Beck's Coffee and convenience stores, and compares these platform vending machines to the Nescafe options available on actual Shinkansen trains. The fun, exploratory tone captures John's signature approach to discovering everyday wonders in Japan.

Japan Travel Tips
-
Finding Coffee at Tokyo Station: Tokyo Station can be surprisingly difficult for finding coffee. Look for Beck's Coffee (JR-operated) inside the station, Anderson Bakery, or convenience stores like NewDays (JR Run). The Shinkansen platform vending machines are often the most convenient option.
-
Shinkansen Vending Machine Coffee: Located on the Shinkansen platforms at Tokyo Station, these machines offer unique themed coffees. They're open from early morning until late evening and can be a quick, quality option before boarding.
-
Best Time to Experience: Any time you're catching a Shinkansen from Tokyo Station. The machines are typically less crowded during off-peak hours.
-
What to Order: Dr. Yellow with cream (500 yen) offers the best value and comes with a collectible yellow cup. For those who prefer less sugar, the Nozomi blend black is noted as strong.
-
Customization: Take advantage of the five sweetness/cream options. Start with "with cream" to find your preferred balance, then adjust to taste.
-
Size Options: Only "big" and "jumbo" sizes available — no small. Plan accordingly if you're watching your caffeine intake or need to travel light.
-
Price Comparison: Platform vending machine coffee is ~300 yen, while the premium Shinkansen-themed blends are 350–500 yen. Beck's Takeaway inside the station offers similar pricing.
-
Combine with Snacks: The Anko pancakes and Tokyo Station branded bread from GranTokyo South Tower make excellent companions to the coffee.
-
Other Lines: Remember that not all Shinkansen platforms have these special machines. Tohoku Shinkansen only has Nescafe. The themed machines appear to be primarily at Tokyo Station for select lines.
Japanese Language & Culture Notes
-
Kanpai (乾杯): The traditional Japanese toast meaning "cheers." John uses this when toasting with the first Kodama coffee.
-
Arigato Gozaimashita (ありがとうございます): The machine displays this polite "thank you very much" after ordering. This level of politeness in vending machine interactions reflects Japanese customer service culture.
-
Itadakimasu (いただきます): Said before eating or drinking, meaning "I receive." John uses this before tasting the chocolate banana drink.
-
Gochisosama Deshita (ごちそうさまでした): Said after finishing a meal or drink, expressing gratitude. John uses this at the end of the video.
-
Vending Machine Culture: Japan has one of the highest densities of vending machines in the world. These Shinkansen-themed coffee machines represent a uniquely Japanese blend of technology, branding, and convenience.
-
JR Branding: Japan Railways (JR) operates multiple branded services including Beck's Coffee, convenience stores, and these specialty vending machines. This vertical integration is common in Japan's transportation system.
-
Shinkansen Line Personalities: Each Shinkansen line has a distinct identity. The Dr. Yellow train is the inspection train (bearing the yellow color), while Kodama, Hikari, and Nozomi are regular service lines. Using these names for coffee blends creates a collectible, nostalgic experience.
-
Customization Culture: The five-tier sweetness/cream system reflects Japanese attention to personal preference. This level of choice is common in Japanese vending machines and food services.

Key Takeaways
-
The Dr. Yellow blend with cream is the standout choice — at 500 yen, it offers the best taste experience and comes with a collectible yellow cup. The premium is noticeable compared to the standard blends.
-
These machines are unique to Tokyo Station — not all Shinkansen platforms have them. The Tohoku Shinkansen, for example, only offers Nescafe. If you want the full experience, seek out Tokyo Station's main Shinkansen platforms.
-
The 90-second brewing time is part of the entertainment — the machine displays an engaging Shinkansen animation during preparation, and each drink type has a different video. It's not just about the coffee; it's about the experience.
-
Five customization levels ensure personal preference — from black to full sugar and cream, these machines accommodate all tastes. Start with "with cream" and adjust from there.
-
Only big and jumbo sizes — like Starbucks, there's no small option. Plan accordingly if you're watching caffeine intake or need to travel light.
-
Finding coffee inside Tokyo Station can be challenging — the station is vast, and coffee options aren't always obvious. The platform vending machines may actually be your most convenient option.
-
The yellow cup is a collectible bonus — for Dr. Yellow fans, the themed cup adds value beyond just the coffee itself.

00:00:01 John Daub: Alright, welcome to Tokyo Station. The Shinkansen has just arrived and I'm in front of the Shinkansen coffee vending machine. I've always wanted to do this live stream. It takes about 90 seconds to make it. They've got so many different kinds of coffees. I actually have one right here. Check it out. This is the Kodama blend of the coffee and we're going to see how this tastes. Now, what makes this really cool is that these vending machines for coffee, you can pick the way you like your coffee. I don't know how they do this. I guess there's a, well, maybe we've seen inside before older machines, but you can have it black, less sugar, with sugar, with cream, less sugar and cream, and with sugar and cream, which is the sweetest and the creamiest. They also seem to have a big cup and over here they have like jumbo cups. You can see jumbo. So there's no small size. It's either big or jumbo. I guess this is going with like the Starbucks way of thinking. You know, there's tall and then there's grande. We don't have small. But yeah, each one of these Shinkansen blends, the Nozomi, Hikari, Kodama, and then there's the Dr. Yellow, which looks probably the coolest of them all. They also have a mocha, a hot cafe latte, a cappuccino, and they have an iced matcha latte, a chocolate banana, which sounds really interesting. And then they have an iced craft coffee. Which sounds crafty. I don't know, whenever you put craft in front of something, it sounds really interesting, right? I think so. So let's have a taste. How you doing? Ramsey Silent? Ramsey Silent, kanpai to you.
00:01:55 John Daub: Oh, that's a clean taste. A little bit bitter, but it's a very clean taste of the Kodama. I like it. It's not very bitter. It's pretty easy to drink.
00:02:12 John Daub: Nice. All right, let's go order one. We're going to compare this to another one. I'm going to go to the other side where there's less people. There's an ice cream vending machine. Look at this high quality ice cream also. Now, before I actually do this, I have a little video I want to show you. I went inside the station. And you know, when you come to Tokyo Station, it's hard to find a coffee actually. I find it like when I need it, there's not one around. So I found it the news day, which is the JR Japan Rail Run convenience store. They don't actually have coffee inside. So you look at the map, you look around, you try to find something. All right, some places you'll find a Beck's Coffee, which is also run by JR. And there's also an Anderson Bakery, which I thought looked really good. But I had to get a snack for this live stream as well. And I eventually did that. I'll show you that in a second.
00:03:06 John Daub: Walking over towards the Tohoku Shinkansen, I did spot something in the distance there. And I wanted to see what the prices were like if you didn't get it on the platform. But they make it really big. I guess they figured out that we couldn't actually find them. The price was about 300 yen, about the same as the vending machine for this.
00:03:26 John Daub: Now, here inside, all right, here's what it looks like inside of here. This is a takeaway coffee. It's just a little booth. It's usually not too crowded. They just serve coffee and some takeaway sandwiches.
00:03:40 John Daub: And the reason why is because people need to go fast. They fill up the coffee and then you go. And then I ended up looking inside the shopping mall here and I found one of these, which is like these Anko pancakes, which look really good. And then I ended up getting this one here. This has Tokyo Station branded on the top of the bread. So we're going to try this in this live stream with the coffee. Why not, right?
00:04:03 John Daub: There's also like these Beck's Takeaway inside of the platforms, but if you're really in a bind, I say get the coffee before you get on the Shinkansen, but there are places to get them if you can. This is on the Tohoku Shinkansen. You don't have these Shinkansen coffee on the Tohoku Shinkansen. You have here just Nescafe stuff. It's pretty good. You can still control the sweetness. You can control the amount of sugar and milk right there, but it's not quite the same as these machines. These are a little bit more modern, and you're going to find out in a second exactly why. But I want to ask you guys which coffee should I get. It's up to you. It's up to the live chat. We're going to be looking and see, and all of you are going to end up deciding and picking.
00:04:51 John Daub: Here. All right. We're going to pick between four blends here. We have the Dr. Yellow, which is a big cup here. We have the Kodama, which I already have, so that's disqualified. The Hikari or the Nozomi. Which one of these should we get? Nozomi, Hikari, or Dr. Yellow? It's up to the live stream chat here. I'll be watching. We also got iced coffee, but we'll save that for another time. Simon's going Dr. Yellow. I'm not going to get strong zero. It's like 12 o'clock in the afternoon. Everyone's going Dr. Yellow. All right. Let's do that next here. All right. It's a big cup. It's 500 yen for this one. All right. I'm going to get it with cream. We're going to do all these with cream, okay?
00:06:03 John Daub: Okay. I did it. That took a second. All right. A timer should pop up here. All right. It said, Arigato gozaimashita. All right. If there's some music playing, I don't know if you guys can hear it. I don't know if there's going to be a copyright.
00:07:26 John Daub: Whatever. I can live with it. That's just funny. You guys should hear the authentic tune. All right. Three, two, one. Bring out my Dr. Yellow baby. Oh, yeah. Oh, look at the cup. It's different. It said, Thank you so much. Look at the cup. It's different. You get a yellow cup. Oh, wow. Oh, wow. That's pretty cool. There's one way. You just got to go for it.
00:08:07 John Daub: Oh, that's nice. That's really nice. The Dr. Yellow one's a little bit more expensive, but... That's good, though. Yeah. I get this one and this one with cream, and this one's okay. This one is, I can tell, is a lot better. I don't know if it's worth 150 yen better, but it's pretty good.
00:08:32 John Daub: Oh, my gosh. That was good. Which one are you guys getting? Can I have a cup of tea now? Oh, yeah. It's like I work here now. I'll get you a tea. Do you have a sugar? I have a sugar. Oh, yeah. You have to either touch your coin, yeah. There's one on the other side as well. So if you're in a hurry, you can run to the other one on the other side. Okay. Here. You're welcome. Oh, someone's getting coffee on this side, too. Thank you. This is kind of fun. All right, let's go ask them where they're from.
00:09:27 John Daub: It takes 90 seconds before we can... I'm the coffee manager for the machines here.
00:09:44 John Daub: Someone's over at the other machine, too. They give you a yellow... Dr. Yellow cup for the Dr. Yellow one. Oh, okay. I thought that was pretty cool.
00:09:52 John Daub: Where are you guys from?
00:09:52 Passerby 1: Melbourne.
00:09:53 John Daub: All right. BB country. All good.
00:10:01 John Daub: Very good.
00:10:03 John Daub: What's up?
00:10:03 Passerby 2: I live here.
00:10:05 John Daub: Oh, right. Yeah. Where are you from originally?
00:10:07 Passerby 2: U.S.
00:10:08 John Daub: Yeah. I've been here 26 years, though.
00:10:12 John Daub: Yeah, that's pretty cool.
00:10:15 Passerby 1: It's my first time here, so...
00:10:17 John Daub: Oh, really? First time? Why did you want to come to Japan?
00:10:20 Passerby 1: People came. People came?
00:10:22 John Daub: Oh, well, yeah. We just saw that they had like a show on the fares and we were like, oh, yeah, it's great. Let's go have a look. Okay.
00:10:31 John Daub: Where have you been?
00:10:34 Passerby 1: I've been in Tokyo for four nights.
00:10:35 John Daub: Okay. And now I'm heading to Kyoto, Asada, and what was the other place?
00:10:43 Passerby 1: Hakone.
00:10:45 John Daub: Hakone. On the way out.
00:10:49 Passerby 1: And then, yeah, so...
00:10:52 John Daub: Yeah, what's it called?
00:10:53 Passerby 1: Hakone.
00:10:55 John Daub: Hakone. Oh, Hakone. That's a popular place. Crowded?
00:11:02 John Daub: Was it?
00:11:03 Passerby 1: Yeah, we're going there. Oh, it's quite nice. It's on the lake there. It's just a lot of good...
00:11:09 John Daub: Yeah, yeah. A lot of good things to see around there. Some museums.
00:11:15 John Daub: Okay. Very cool. I'm actually just wanted to film the machine. I wanted to try this for the longest time to compare the coffees. And it's the only place here. You could say it. They have it on the other platform, but it's Nescafe. This one's special. JR Coffee. So it's certainly a little bit more interesting, I think.
00:11:46 John Daub: Look at this one. It's a chocolate banana. That's a little bizarre. Yeah. I thought I would go for that. And they have iced matcha latte, which looks good too, but... Yeah, if you want the coffee, I wouldn't buy it more. Oh, yeah. That's it. Oh, is it more? You can have the best coffee in the world. That's the best side. Yeah. That's the best side. This is a... It's not strong enough for what we need to drink. Oh, for cappuccino? Yeah, I could have told you that. If you wanted strength, I would have gone for the... But I like the... Nozomi one. There are... For no sugar. That'll knock you down a little bit. Yeah, right. Yeah, I don't want a black coffee. Yeah. Since I've been here, I've been drinking this black coffee. Yeah. Which I don't normally drink, but I'm enjoying it.
00:12:26 John Daub: It's kind of fun hanging around the coffee. Is this your Shinkansen here?
00:12:31 Passerby 1: Yeah.
00:12:32 John Daub: Oh, cool. Very good. They used to have a cart service. I don't know if they still do anymore. They bring the coffee back and forth, but it was not that good, and it was more than this, so... Yeah, well...
00:12:44 John Daub: Oh, my sense. I probably put a man in business. We like this. We want this machine more here. Thank you. Thank you.
00:13:02 John Daub: All right, which one should I get next here? I think I'm going to try... The chocolate banana looks really interesting. I'm going to go to the other side. I think the platform might be free over there. I don't know.
00:13:44 John Daub: Oh, he actually works there. I should ask him what was the most popular one. I should ask him what was the most popular one. He went inside just to make sure that there were enough cups or something. I'm just having fun here. All right, what do you guys think here? Which one should I get? It's up to you now. All right, make it quick. I got about five minutes left here. I like the showing like Shinkansen scenes on here.
00:14:26 John Daub: I'm going to try the matcha latte. I don't know. That seems kind of generic. This ice chocolate banana seems interesting. It's weird enough where it's like, what? I'm going to get that here. Let's try one more of the ice chocolate banana because I can... Thank you so much. I saw that coming in here.
00:14:55 John Daub: That's faster here. I don't know if that's going to take 90 seconds. Maybe it's quicker. All right, whatever they're doing, they're... They're doing it now. Oh, here comes the cup. So the cup looks the same as the other one. Kind of generic looking. All right, they put in a bunch of chemicals or something. It's filling up in the far end. So we can say now that this is actually a live camera. It's different than the other one. Does he see the Shinkansen pulling away here? I don't know. What is it like? Mashed up chocolate? Mashed up banana? Chocolate? Chocolate? This is the final one, Simon. I'm going to leave the rest to your own imagination, but it's kind of fun just to try it all.
00:16:00 John Daub: All right, here it comes. Apparently, we got 10 seconds now. Oh, it's like a totally different animation. Look at the cuts that they do to this video. Here he comes. They did like cuts in that video. Oh, it's bigger.
00:16:28 John Daub: It's bigger and it's cold. I don't know. Okay. Like I say, chemicals, like it's a mix, you know, like powder and stuff. I don't know. We're going to find out. Itadakimasu.
00:16:45 John Daub: Kids are going to love this. I don't know if it's real banana. Everyone's offended. Don't be offended by chemicals. Chemicals is everything. Alright, check it out. It's frothy and it's interesting.
00:17:02 John Daub: It's sweet for sure. It's certainly sweet. This is — it's too big for me and too sweet for me. But it's, I think if you want to try it, it literally tastes, it doesn't taste as chocolaty but a little banana-y. I don't taste chocolate at all. I just taste mostly banana. It's like a sweet banana with an overture of chocolate somewhere in the distance. It's like subtle notes of a chocolate somewhere. But it's mostly a sweet banana drink. That's the only way I can really say it here. Hey Vasily's here! Thank you buddy! This coffee, so Aiken got the Shinkansen one and this banana one from Vasily, I appreciate it.
00:18:15 John Daub: Alright, I still think that this Dr. Yellow is the best one. The cream is not bad. It's a light cream and I've tried it with sugar in the past and it is sweet. But it's not like overly sweet but it's sweet and I think it's normal sugar, like the white powdered sugar. It's not the syrup or anything like that. Because I've seen inside of these machines before. I'm not quite sure now. It could be syrup. It just depends. Different machines are different. I'm not sure. I'd love to see inside this machine. But there you have it everybody. I just wanted to kind of brighten your day. Just try two drinks out. We got three of them. If you liked it, hit that subscribe button. If you have any questions, leave the comments down below. I just want to, I get a ticket to enter. I get a ticket to enter. I'm not going anywhere. Gochisosama deshita.
