Mt Fuji Onsen Bath Experience Enoshima
Mt Fuji Onsen Bath Experience Enoshima
Overview
In this exclusive look inside the Enoshima Island Spa, John Daub teams up with friend Ruth Jarman to explore one of the best spots near Tokyo for viewing Mount Fuji while relaxing in hot spring water. Filmed in January, the video highlights why winter offers the clearest views of Japan's iconic mountain. Normally an electronics-free zone, John receives special permission to document the facility, giving viewers a rare glimpse into the locker rooms, bathing areas, and unique pool features.
The spa offers a hybrid experience traditional for Japan but modified for international comfort. While traditional onsen (hot spring) areas require nudity, Enoshima Island Spa provides pool areas where bathing suits are permitted, making it accessible for those shy about public bathing. John navigates the maze-like facility, testing the salty natural spring water drawn from 1,500 meters underground, exploring cave pools, waterfalls, and saunas.
Beyond the bathing experience, the video serves as a practical guide for visitors. John and Ruth discuss pricing, hours, rental options, and the best times to visit for privacy or specific experiences like the night laser show. The standout feature remains the uninterrupted view of Mount Fuji from the outdoor baths, a sight John describes as worth the trip alone.

00:00 John Daub: Hello, thanks for waiting up. This is the Only in Japan Go channel. We're live at Enoshima Island Spa. And we have an amazing view of Mount Fuji today. Check it out. In the winter, you get the best views of Mount Fuji. It's crystal clear. We're so lucky.
00:22 John Daub: There's going to be a lot more views from Mount Fuji, but I came here with a friend of mine, Ruth Jarman. She's waiting inside. This is the Enoshima Island Spa. We're going to take a look inside. Because normally, this Enoshima Spa is electronics free, meaning you have to turn off your cell phone. And you're not allowed to bring cell phones in. So this is an inside look, an exclusive of the Enoshima Island Spa.
00:49 John Daub: Alright, we're going inside. It's not even open yet. I gotta pry the doors open. Oh, they're waiting for me. It opens at 11. Hey. Take off your shoes. Alright, take off your shoes. Pick it up and take it to the locker. Boy, these things stink. Sorry. Now the locker is going to stink. And then basically, this is the key for the whole day. Alright. Thank you, Ruth. And we're going to check in. Wow, this place is beautiful.
01:38 John Daub: Konnichiwa. Hello. Wow. So I'll take the keys. You wanted to rent a bathing suit, right? Oh yeah, that's right. Because, like, onsen (hot spring), you gotta be completely naked. But this place... Yeah, there's pools and onsen. So onsen is a naked place. Pool is a bathing suit place. So you don't have to be naked for the super time. And you can rent one. But yeah, because I thought I was just going to be naked. So yeah, I'll take a bathing suit. We choose a color. Oh, color. Wow. Mmm. What's in style this year? I guess I'll go red. Yeah, I think you should go red. Power red bathing suit. Bring it. Size 8. Okay? Uh, okay. Yeah, good. I figure I gained a lot of weight in New York over the holidays eating pizza, cheesecake, and a lot of other bad stuff.
02:36 Ruth Jarman: Actually, I'll tell you a secret. I'm kind of excited to see John in a bathing suit.
02:39 John Daub: No! Trust me. This is going to be a car and swimsuits. Okay. There's a robe and everything in there. Oh, the robe is... Everything's in there? Awesome. Yeah. Okay. And they even give you a little plastic bag to put your bathing suit. This is what's key. Oh, okay. Oh, that's the key for the locker. This is floor map. Yeah. So we have an English floor map so you can use this to navigate your way because it's a little bit confusing. It is. It's like a maze in there. It's like a ninja house. All right. Hold on. I'm losing my bags. Okay. Let's enjoy. Thank you. Okay. Thank you. All right. That's cool. So everybody can speak English. Yeah. Everybody speaks English.
03:15 John Daub: All right. We might lose... I hope you can have five seconds of relaxation. So here's the men's locker room. All right. Men's locker room. Well, you can't go in there. I am going because we're not open yet. Oh, okay. Also, also, this is the secret entrance to the spa. Oh, really? Yeah. Look at this curtain. It's like made for an emperor. Yes, you are. You're the emperor. The naked emperor. Hey, now. Emperor with no clothes. Whoa. Okay. Now you can choose any kind of locker you want. Oh, yeah. There's... I found my bag. Good. It's one of your favorite ones. So basically, you just choose any locker. Okay. And John, I guess this is... This is where you're going to change and everything. And you use this key to lock it. Okay. And then... Yeah. So I will see you at the pools. All right. Second floor. Have fun in the naked area. And here's your mat in case you get locked. Yeah. All right. See you later. All right. Don't come back. All right. Get naked. Get naked. Oh, no. Oh, my.
04:12 John Daub: Okay. So the adventure begins. Yeah. So I have to get naked. This is pretty cool, though. I think because normally there's a lot of people who are shy about going to an onsen or going to... Because they don't want to show their body. You can wear a bathing suit here. There's places for bathing suits. So I'm going to put this here. You know, I can't show you me... I can't show me changing. This would be wrong. So I'm just going to turn it around. Actually, you know what I'm going to do? I'm going to put you inside the onsen. Okay. That's a good idea. I got to change. I got business to take care of. All right. Here. You can stay right here. You guys stay right there. All right. You're going in there in a minute, but you can't go there yet because you need me. So wait there. Okay. Wait here. All right. You can still hear me, though. It's really cold today, too. The wind is pretty heavy. The crossing here, which I filmed about 30 minutes ago, was pretty windy. But we had a lot of fun with that.
06:33 John Daub: All right. I've changed, everybody. I'm ready to go to the spa. Thank you, Trekaris. This is an amazingly clean and beautiful bathroom changing area. This is where after you finish with the spa, after the onsen, you can change. This is a real onsen. Amazing restaurant. Again, they invited me to come and do this, so I was really happy to do that. The locker room is really nice. I'm so happy to be here because I've been working pretty hard. I didn't really change that good. It's kind of a mess, but we're not going to be that long anyways. I don't have to lock it. No one's going to take my stuff. There's nobody here. In we go. Okay. There's a little chart here. Spa therapy. Very nice. Wow. Now that's a spa. There's an onsen. This is an onsen. You have to be naked in this one here. Now, the windows are all steamed up, but I can see Mount Fuji. I don't think you can, though. Mount Fuji is... You can just see the peak over there. This is a perfect place if you want to chill. This is why I wanted to come here. I wanted to come here because I wanted to hit an onsen where I could see Mount Fuji.
08:06 John Daub: All right. I'm going to test this water. Oh, this feels so good. Oh, look at this water. Oh, man. Oh, this feels good. So, I'm wearing a towel for your safety. So, we're going to go in. Okay. This is too nice. There aren't too many things in life that feel as good as being in an onsen. And Ruth told me to try the water. She said it was a little salty. It's a little salty. Now, Ruth told me that they get this natural water 1,500 meters down. It's like 5,000 feet down underneath the ground in the ocean. And she told me all these secret stuff like caves of Mount Fuji and things like this. So, Ruth knows a lot of stuff. But this is one of the best onsen views I think any of us could ever hope for because, yeah. I'm walking. I'm treading through the water to get to this. Oh, this is a little jacuzzi. Boom. I need a beer. Oh, this is too hot. Look at that. That, my friends, is Mount Fuji. This is why a lot of you come to Japan, to see that. Oh, this is amazing. It does feel amazing. And this is what it looks like from the other side of the spa.
10:18 John Daub: So, okay. Now, I'm going to get out of here and go to the second floor. Got to keep this livestream snappy. You can lounge naked on the block if you want. That's what people do. I see old-timers will sprawl out there. Okay. So, normally, you will take a shower after. I like to rinse before I get into the bath. Then I take a shower afterwards to wash off anything that was in the shower. So, I'm on my bod. How do I get out of here? Okay. So, bye-bye to the onsen. Cool. All right. Now, I got to get into the swim trunks. Now, I picked out red swim trunks. All right. Once again, just wait for me. I'm changing. Stay here, everybody. Don't move. These are stylish. Very nice. All right. The robe. The robe comes in a bundle. What's in here? Oh, this is a nice robe. I feel like a king. I feel like a boxer. I really feel like a boxer. That's where the towel. I was looking for this towel. All right. So, I'm ready for the heavyweight fight. I'm going down now into the pool area. This has onsen pools. I'm going to close this up. This onsen starts to... How do I close it? You know what? Just leave it there. There's nobody here. I don't think anyone's going to take my stuff. Here we go. Thank you, Faye. All right. Let's make our way to the second floor. That's where Ruth's waiting. I love these curtains. I'm really... Okay. Take the right elevator. This elevator does not access the spa area. Guests may enter the spa pool area via the elevator inside the third floor dressing room. What? Okay. Can I... That's the women's locker. I'm going to take the women's locker. Am I allowed to go in there? Okay. Just one peek. Oh, look. There are double curtains. Ah, that's the women's area. Okay. Run away. Run away. All right. We're going to the second floor now. The signal might cut out. My apologies. It's fun. Okay. Here we are. Second floor. Oh, nice to meet you, too. Oh. She's pointing to this. No. I have a red bathing suit on. Sorry. Okay. Ruth. Ruth. I think I'm lost. Uh-oh. Oh. This isn't where I'm supposed to be. I'm lost. Wow. This is hard to get around. Hold on. So I must be here. So I have to go to the third floor and then go down. I'm going back up to the third floor. I'm a little lost. I want to go to the second floor pool. Oh, the third floor. It's the third floor now. Oh, no. It's the third floor. It's the second floor now. So the third floor. From the elevator in here to the bathroom. I'm going to go down the second floor. Okay. Okay. Thank you. There's an elevator in... Oh, she said goodbye. That was inside the men's locker room. Who knew? I didn't know. I should have known. It's ridiculous. Okay. Here we go. I'm going back into the men's locker room because I was told there's an elevator inside the locker room. Look for... Everybody look for the elevator. Elevator. Pool area. Really? Oh. Oh, there is an elevator inside here. Okay. The elevator is inside the locker room. Who knew? I didn't know. All right. This is like a maze. All right. It's even a click button so you can't get lost. Pool area. That reads in Japanese. Pool area. Looks good. Welcome. Ruth! Oh, but we have permission. It's okay. Ruth! How do I get in? This is the shit. This is the shower room. This is a maze. Push. No photographs. We're good. Whoa! I did it. There she is! I was lost! Good girl. You didn't come into the men's area.
17:04 Ruth Jarman: You put it in your bathing suit there, John. Not bad. Red is good.
17:07 John Daub: Red is good. So this is the jacuzzi. This looks awesome. Jacuzzi and back there we have the actual hot spring water. Oh, this here. It's separated. Separated. So this is probably the only place in Japan where you could go into an actual hot spring with your bathing suit. So I can see who your partner with is. Yeah. Yeah. This is true. It's a big deal. A lot of foreigners are too shy or don't want to get naked with a bunch of strangers, which is weird for me because I've been here for 20 years, but you can use a swimsuit in the onsen here.
17:35 Ruth Jarman: Exactly. Exactly. So for a first-timer who's not used to it, you can still have all the benefits of the hot spring water. And see Mount Fuji!
17:40 John Daub: And see Mount Fuji! Maybe not here, but oh, this is nice too. And can kids play here? Is this child-friendly?
17:49 Ruth Jarman: The only thing is that kids under six are not allowed on Sundays. But every other day, any child six or over can come in.
17:58 John Daub: Alright. But yeah, so little teeny babies are not here. Okay. So it's kind of nice, quiet place. Yes, it is. I like the aloha spirit to this pool. And I don't know if you see all the laser lights up there. Yeah. At night they have this thing called the Laser Pearl Show. It's the only one in the world. This is like a theme park. They have all these laser lights coming out with all these drops of water. And you can watch the water. And you can see the water. And you can watch it from the pool. That's awesome! So this, I was asking about the price. This is like $30. $30 US, about 3,200 yen, right? Yep. 3,200. You can get all day. All day. You can stay here all day. Yeah, it closes at 9 at night. That's pretty good. Yeah. And I mean, if you want to take like a tree van and all that, that would be a separate cost. And then you can order coffee and everything, which they would charge to your little van that you have at the other thing. Oh, right. I have a, oh, I left it upstairs. I left everything out. I didn't have time to change stuff. Okay, okay. Well, no one comes to 11. So we're good, right? Yeah, we're just all over the house.
18:56 Ruth Jarman: Oh, this is the outdoor bath. So right now it's windy and cold, so the water gets cold, but during the summer this is all open and you can go out on the deck and sit in a warm pool.
19:05 John Daub: Is it warm right now? You mean outside? Yeah. No. It's not warm? No, it's not warm. Okay, I'm just going to check. Yeah, just check. Oh, it's windy. I'm half exposed. My bod is freezing. Okay. Oh, I lost my sash. Hold on. Oh, you lost your sash. Okay. Okay. So, I'm going to go out and check. Oh, it's freezing cold. Look at that beautiful view of Mount Fuji though. Yeah, and the pool is cold. Oh, it's freezing cold. It's freezing cold. It's not heated right now. You do heat it, right?
19:43 Ruth Jarman: Yeah, it's heated in the summer.
19:45 John Daub: It's heated in the summer. I really feel you on an island. Yeah. I just totally took that out. Sorry, Ruth. Okay, I'm going to fix it. I just destroyed there. All right. It happens. I'll make it out. You want to go? Wait. Wait. Do you want to go? All right. I'm going to fix it. Wait. I heard they have a cave here.
20:24 Ruth Jarman: Yes. Wow. It's not just a cave. It's cave pools.
20:28 John Daub: No way. Yeah. You want to see it? Yeah. I want to know the mysteries of the cave pool. The mystery of the cave pool. You ready? In the elevator though. All right. Let's do this. All right. Well, they got like flotation devices. Yep. Flotation devices. You can have a lot of fun here. Yeah, you can. My age just dropped 30 years. That's right. All right. What happened? What is this place? I just joined with it. It's like a miracle. Is this heated?
20:56 Ruth Jarman: Yeah. You want it?
20:57 John Daub: Yeah. I'll go in here. All right. You can go through the waterfall like a little mermaid. That won't be necessary. You can be a little mermaid. All right, everybody. You're coming with me. I'm not doing this alone. You're coming with me and we're going to... I'm taking you with me. Okay. Okay. Are you coming with me? No. I'm going to watch you. But you don't need the towel. I need the towel. Okay. I'm going to go. All right. Okay. No slippers? There's a stairs. Oh, there's a stairs? I was going to cannon ball in. Oh, this is nice. This is nice and warm. I'm going in. All right. Nice and warm. It's January but it feels oddly like June or July. All right. I brought the towel. I'm going to just leave it behind. Come on in, room. Somebody push her in. Somebody push her in. All right. I'm up against this. I got to get this gimbal through here. All right. Let's do this. Awesome. Oh, I'm going under. Hold on. Hold on. It's nice if you can get your body under the water. This is really cool. Okay. And there's... I'm on a jet stream. There's like a jet popping up, bringing hot water up. I'm going to get my... We're out here in spa now. There's Mount Fuji. We got a waterfall, people. I'm now bathing in... I'm enjoying this. It's not a very good hair day but this feels awesome, everybody. And it's January. This is crazy. It just doesn't feel right. It doesn't feel like I should be allowed to be outside swimming in January. It just doesn't feel right to me. All right. I'm going to go inside. We're going to go to the other side. There's her. There she is. I'm still alive. All right. So the bad thing about going through the waterfall is that I got to do it again. This is take one last look of Mount Fuji because this camera might get wet. Drama to this live stream. Will I be able to make it through the gimbal in like a Disney World ride or something? I feel like I just went through the waterfall on a roller coaster. I kind of have a feeling. There's my slippers. Oh, is there a towel? I'm going to shotgun it over there now. I'm not done. We got more. And look, it feels like a theme park. Look at the blue LED lights up here. Wow. We're going deep. Is this sauna? Oh, yeah. This is going to show me the sauna. It's amazing how... It's a sauna. It's a sauna. It's hot in here. It's nice. So this is where they have the elf goose where they put the herbal water on the heat and it comes all over you and the guy comes with a towel and goes like this to detox you like 100%. It's awesome. I'm getting too comfortable. Let's go back in the game. All right. LED lights. Theme park. Hot water. Mount Fuji. Get in. Oh, yeah. We're back. We're back. We're back. Okay. Honestly, it's so cold. The one that to me is why a lot of people come to Japan to get that onsen view. You don't got to go to Hakone. That's what I'm watching right now. Oh, look at the seagull. This could be a screenshot, a screensaver. Oh, he's going to cross the threshold of Mount Fuji. This is somebody's screensaver. Wow. Honestly, it's the wind coming in is still pretty strong, but it's an amazing view. I'm sitting. I'm right here on the edge. Can you picture yourself here? This is so beautiful.
27:08 John Daub: So I'm going to end the live stream here. This seems a really good, really good space to do that. I want to thank everybody for watching from Enoshima. Wow. You can't see me because I'm shattered backlit. I'm sorry. But I just want to say thank you to Enoshima Island Spa and Ruth for the tour. There she is back there. Thank you to Ruth for the tour. This hot water in January. This is January. And you can play here. Thanks everybody for watching. Let's turn this camera around for the last 20 seconds. Take a look at Mount Fuji. I'm going to do a question and answer with Ruth after this live stream. So stick around and look at the next one. Thanks everybody. Don't forget to subscribe. Awesome view.
