He details the specific rules he had to follow, such as hand positioning and safety checks, and reflects on the rigorous nature of Japan's driving education system.

John interacts with friends and viewers, discussing the difficulties of the test and comparing experiences with others who have failed multiple times. The video serves as both a personal milestone celebration and an informative look at what foreigners can expect when navigating the licensing process in Japan.

Japan Travel Tips

  • Driving School: Expect a rigorous process that requires relearning driving habits to match Japanese safety standards.
  • Safety Checks: Always perform explicit left and right checks at stops (anshin kakuni).
  • Hand Position: Keep hands at 2 and 10 o'clock on the steering wheel during the test.
  • Stop Lines: Ensure you stop completely before the designated stop line at intersections.
  • Celebration: It is common to celebrate passing with friends, often involving food or drink like sake.
  • Retakes: Don't be discouraged by failure; many people take the test multiple times (one friend mentioned took it seven times).

Japanese Language & Culture Notes

  • Anshin kakuni (安心確に): A phrase meaning "safely and securely," often used in the context of driving checks.
  • Driving License School (Menkyo Gakkou): In Japan, most people attend a certified driving school to learn the specific rules and etiquette required to pass the test.
  • Safety Culture: The strict testing regime is culturally accepted as necessary for maintaining public safety on crowded roads.
  • Walk of Shame: Failing the test is common enough that there is a shared understanding of the embarrassment involved, but it is viewed as a learning opportunity.

Food & Drink Guide

  • Sake (Japanese rice wine): Mentioned as a celebratory drink for passing the test.
  • Curry: Mentioned ambiguously by John ("I'm hungry [?]"), likely referring to a post-test meal plan.

People

  • John Daub: Host and protagonist. Recently passed his Japanese driver's license test after a long journey documented on the channel.
  • Riken: A friend also taking the driving test, mentioned as coming back for another attempt.
  • Jim Trekaris: A viewer/supporter mentioned by name during the live stream thanks.
  • Friend (Unnamed): A companion who failed the test recently, discussed regarding mistakes and celebration.

Key Takeaways

  • Passing the Japanese driver's license test requires strict adherence to safety protocols, not just driving skill.
  • The system is designed to ensure all drivers respect the rules, contributing to Japan's overall road safety.
  • Failure is common and should be viewed as a learning experience to become a safer driver.
  • Completing the license opens up new possibilities for travel content and exploration in Japan.

00:00:09 John Daub: Oh no, he didn't and I didn't do it. Good for you, man, finally! I was shaking! I'm holding the steering wheel, 2 and 10 o'clock. Anshin kakuni (safely and securely), left, right, at every stop. Don't go over the triangle, remembering all the rules like it was... And I did it!

00:01:18 John Daub: I knew that you failed, though, when he told you to go this way. When he told you to turn right instead of left. Like, oh, it's over! Buy me a bottle of sake. Oh my goodness.

00:01:31 John Daub: Up to it, we're gonna celebrate it. This is incredible, dude. I got done with this test. I was like emotional, I was almost gonna cry because it's over. I saw you hugging the tester guy. I was so emotional though, I was like it's over. I mean I don't gotta come back here. But I gotta wait, there's still a bunch of people taking the test. Riken is coming back for one more. I know where you went wrong, but I think going to the tests, going to the school really helps.

00:02:27 John Daub: Super chats, people who are giving me the super chats know how long and how hard this journey has been because it was like ah and it passed. When I got out of the car I said this is the first time I actually finished the whole course. I got out of the car and I went around the back and I knew that it—he said give me the card. You get a card that you swipe when you enter. It says give me the card, okay that means you passed. I passed and then he gave me the pink thing and then I'm like I'm gonna go back and wait for the test result.

00:02:57 John Daub: Wow this is really cool. This is what the pass ticket looks like. I don't think so, I hope not. Don't steal that. But you know what I'm gonna do another live stream later on in the day with the license. I'll show you what the license looks like without the personal information and we'll end this journey. But I just wanted to get online. I know a lot of you have been waiting. I said I was gonna stream at 2:15 but it just finished now. I gotta go back and actually... I'm hungry [?]. You're gonna eat. What do you think, your walk the weekend? What was the hard thing for you? Why do you think you failed?

00:03:32 John Daub: I failed where you have to stop, there's a line you have to stop before that line. What made me—you're going to look around the corner though. That's what I was going to do. Your mistake saved me, I might have done the same thing. So probably next time I may... I don't know for another. Oh you will. Another friend already made the test seven times. Three, yeah seven times. Seven times that's a lot.

00:04:05 John Daub: If I had done this live stream five minutes ago you would have seen me in tears. I was on the border like it's over. And now I'm starting to, the energy's starting to come down. But yeah it's one of the most challenging things I had to do because it's reprocessing the way you know how to drive. I've been driving for years. He knows how to drive but it's reprocessing and learning the Japanese system. Respecting the rules of Japan and if you can do that I think you have a better chance of passing.

00:04:31 John Daub: It's a serious thing, this driving test because when you're on the road you don't want to kill anybody. Japan's laws are different. So totally fun. I think it's great that they do this kind of test like this strict. Because that's why it's very safe to be in Japan driving, walking or driving the bicycle because everyone knows how to drive. And that's why they do it like this so it's pretty safe to be in Japan. And you know you're perfect.

00:05:03 John Daub: You have my card. Yeah I do. You think you still do? I think I might have another one but give me a call when you pass. Yeah go celebrate. Oh it's now here you go. Oh thank you very much. Yeah give me a call again and let's hook up when you pass. Yeah all right see you buddy.

00:05:29 John Daub: I've done that walk of shame before. Yeah I've done that walk of shame before, it's not good. This is the standing of success. I think it's a good thing to fail because you learn from that. And I'm going to be definitely a safer driver because that's almost second nature to look left and right and be able to do the checks and pass the test. So I hope that this ordeal has helped you in some way. This is the front of the driving license school.

00:06:01 John Daub: I hope that this video is helpful. I hope you enjoyed everything. This series has helped you a little bit. I'm gonna do a post-license live stream later on in the day. But we did it. That means we're gonna have Only in Japan driving shows now. Awesome. All right. I gotta go back in and get my license. Yeah. Thank you very much for the super chats, Jim Trekaris, everybody.

00:06:23 John Daub: I'm looking, hit down here John. 16 thank you so much. I really appreciate, I appreciate the support on the channel. I just uploaded a new video on the main channel about ryokan. Check it out Fukushima. Love you guys. Thank you very much. I passed, I did it. See you again soon.
