ONLY in JAPAN Wedding Announcement Married in Japan

Overview

In this special and historic livestream announcement, John Daub shares life-changing news with his audience: he is getting married today. Recorded on April 21, 2018, this brief video captures the moments before the ceremony begins. John appears on camera wearing a formal kimono (traditional Japanese garment), signaling the significance of the occasion.

The video offers a rare glimpse into John's personal life, which he typically keeps separate from his travel content. He explains that his fiancee (known to viewers as Kanae Daub) is shy and prefers not to be featured heavily on camera. A friend named Tom assists with filming, highlighting the informal, behind-the-scenes nature of this livestream.

Though short, this video marks a pivotal moment in the history of the Only in Japan Go channel. It transitions John from a solo explorer to a partner sharing his life in Japan with Kanae, who would later become a frequent and beloved presence in future videos. The setting is described as a beautiful garden venue, though specific details are kept private to respect the ceremony.

  • Livestream Culture: Live announcements are common for creators to share personal milestones directly with their community.

Japanese Language & Culture Notes

  • Kimono: John mentions wearing a kimono (traditional Japanese garment). For weddings, men often wear formal kimono such as montsuki (crested kimono) with hakama (pleated trousers), though John does not specify the exact type in this clip.

00:00 John Daub: Good morning everybody. I just wanted to go live to say some important news to the people who are watching. Yeah, so if you didn't already know, I am getting married. Today is the day and I'm wearing a kimono and my friend Tom here, he's going to act as the cameraman. Actually, one of the reasons I didn't announce this before is because my wife-to-be, my fiancee, is kind of shy and she doesn't really want to be in the video so much. It's actually a beautiful garden if you take a look where we're getting married in this place here.

00:39 John Daub: I'm not going to be on for very long. There's really not a lot of time but Tom's going to take over. Here you go Tom.

00:45 Tom: Cheers. Just a little bit. Okay. You don't have to watch the video.

01:05 John Daub: Alright, so I'm going to take you upstairs just for a couple of minutes. This is a very private moment.

01:10 Guest: Oh, okay.

01:17 John Daub: So, this is a... I don't know what it is. Probably there's no phone.

01:23 Guest: Oh. Just one. Okay, okay. No music.

01:36 Guest: Hi, this is a... Welcome. Come on.

01:48 John Daub: So, that's a... That was my big announcement. That's all I really wanted to say is that I'm getting hitched and... She's over here.

01:59 Guest: Hi.

02:39 John Daub: One second. So, thank you everybody. That's all I can show you for now. But I'll see you a little later on. So, thanks for joining us on the livestream. That's my announcement. I've got to go. This is kind of an important moment. Thanks everybody.
