Japan Travel Tips
- Supermarket Bento: Japanese supermarkets offer incredible variety and quality for bento lunches. They are affordable and perfect for a quick, authentic meal.
- Seasonal Snacks: Look for hoshigaki (dried persimmon) in supermarkets during winter/New Year's. They are sweet like candy but natural.
- Strawberry Prices: Winter strawberries (especially from Fukuoka) are in season but expensive, ranging from 900 to 1,000 yen for a small pack of eight.
- Dining with Kids: Restaurants and homes often accommodate children by cutting food into smaller pieces. It's common to provide forks alongside chopsticks for kids.
- Travel Planning: John mentions trips to Okayama and Tottori, areas less visited by tourists. Consider exploring the Chugoku region for unique national parks like Hiruzen.
Japanese Language & Culture Notes
- Hanjuku Tamago (半熟卵): Refers to half-cooked or soft-boiled eggs, often found in bento boxes. Leo enjoys the soft texture.
- Hoshigaki (干し柿): Dried persimmons hung to dry for a long time, sometimes dipped in sugar. A traditional winter snack, especially during shogatsu (New Year's).
- Shogatsu (正月): The Japanese New Year celebration. Specific foods like hoshigaki and mikan (tangerines) are associated with this season.
- Nanban (南蛮): Literally "Southern Barbarian," refers to a style of cooking (often chicken or fish) that is deep-fried and served with tartar sauce, influenced by Portuguese cuisine.
- Parenting Style: John notes allowing Leo to eat independently, even if messy, to foster autonomy. Cleaning up yogurt faces is part of the process.
Food & Drink Guide
- Katsudon (カツ丼): 00:00:21 Pork cutlet over rice. Leo's choice. John cuts it into smaller pieces for him.
- Chicken Nanban (チキン南蛮): 00:00:21 Deep-fried breaded chicken with tartar sauce. John's lunch. Described as delicious and soft.
- Udon (うどん): 00:03:13 Backup lunch option. Leo likes it, but it needs to be cut due to length.
- Hoshigaki (干し柿): 00:07:47 Dried persimmon from Toyama Prefecture. Described as "nature candy." Watch out for seeds.
- Strawberries (イチゴ): 00:10:04 In season but expensive (900-1000 yen/pack). High quality, especially from Fukuoka.
- Mikan (みかん): 00:10:04 Tangerines, another common New Year's fruit.

00:00:00 John Daub: Hey everybody, welcome! This is John and Leo's day off. Kanae is gone, my wife, and we're going to be eating some Japanese bento that we picked up at the supermarket. Leo picked his own bento. He kind of just touched it and I had to cut it into pieces. This is what we have here. Check this out. And Leo, we're going to eat. We're so hungry.
00:00:21 John Daub: Leo picked a katsudon. Alright Leo, this is your katsudon. I cut it up and I'm going to make sure that we maybe even get smaller pieces here. But that's Leo's lunch. Kanae is going to kill me. And then here I have a chicken nanban. So we basically got chicken for lunch. As I cut Leo's bento here. Oh that is so good. Chicken nanban is delicious.
00:00:56 John Daub: When you go to Japanese supermarkets, the bentos that you have here are incredible sometimes. Here, check this out. Easy, this is the supermarket that we were... The options are incredible for bento. And yeah, let's try what we got here. Boom. Let's try it out Leo. I do have a backup just in case he doesn't like this one. But I'm getting a feeling that he's okay with it.
00:02:19 John Daub: Alright, here's your fork. Alright, tell me what you think of this. Good? Here's some rice. You want some rice? No? He likes the egg really good. And one of the things that you have is these really soft eggs which Leo likes. You can see that sometimes these hanjuku tamago (half-cooked eggs). Good, huh? There you go buddy. There's some vegetables in there as well.
00:03:13 John Daub: This is our lunch. It's so much fun to go to the convenience stores and supermarkets to get lunch. We actually have... I have a backup lunch which is udon. He really likes udon. You got to cut it into smaller pieces for him because udon can be quite long and rubbery. But he really likes that. And he doesn't want me to help him either because if you do that, he gets angry. He can eat by himself and that makes sense because he's growing pretty quickly. He doesn't like to be told what to do. Neither do I. Especially with our food. We just want to enjoy it.
00:03:51 John Daub: Alright, let's try this chicken nanban here. This is going to be a short livestream. We wanted to share our lunch with you. Chicken nanban basically is deep-fried breaded chicken. I got an episode about this coming really soon. You can dip it in there I guess. Mmm. You want to try chicken nanban? Okay. Wow. Chicken. No. No thank you. Oh, you want me to cut it for you? Sometimes you just have to cut it with your hands. It's very soft chicken.
00:04:49 John Daub: Yesterday was really funny. We went out to eat for, we'd been sick for quite a long time and two days ago was the first day that we could go out. And yesterday we finally went out and had some quick lunch nearby. And Leo took, he loves french fries. But he hasn't discovered ketchup until yesterday. Yeah. You want ketchup? Oh, this one? Okay. And then, we were down to the last french fry. These are satsuma-imo (sweet potato) french fries, the purple ones. And the last one. He knew it was the last one. So he kept dipping it into the ketchup and mayonnaise. They give you mayonnaise here. And he kept on licking the last french fry for five minutes until he ate all the ketchup. It was just funny.
00:06:08 John Daub: We moved on to dessert. Which is a yogurt and strawberries. Meals go quickly. And in the end, after he eats dessert, he'll come back to lunch. It's weird. He doesn't go in order, he goes out of order, which is actually quite genius. You know, I think dessert first probably is a good idea. And then the same eating face. This is how we eat. This is very demanding.
00:06:53 John Daub: Rajani is here. Hey. Hey, aloha. Oh, we're gonna be announcing the Kickstarter. Let's do that tomorrow maybe. We'll be on some time. Michael Sassano's here, happy new year, buddy. Oh, I better get my dessert. Here Leo, stay here and hang out with the UFO Bob and Michael Sassano for a minute. And Rob Donioff. Shout out to Melanie in the UK. Thank you for sending all of these goodies. We just got another box from you. And these stem ginger and chocolate shortbread cookies and all the goodies from the West are absolutely delicious. And we're gonna be snacking on these forever. Thank you for that.
00:07:47 John Daub: My dessert is more simple. This is a hoshigaki (dried persimmon). Do you guys know what a hoshigaki is? I'll turn it around here. Hoshigaki are so good. This one comes from Toyama Prefecture. It's basically a persimmon that's been hung out to dry for a long time and then they dip it in some sugar. Wow. You want some of that too? You don't actually have to do that. It's pretty good as is. See, now he wants the katsudon again. So let's try this up here. Again, lunch is in no particular order with Leo, but he does eat and that's important. He does eat vegetables as well, eventually.
00:08:57 John Daub: Hoshigaki are so good. And this is the season. It's basically like candy. Nature candy. When this fruit is dried, it is so good. Here, I'll, the only way to show you is to just... It is just like candy. Look at that. Oh my gosh. It's one of my favorite snacks, especially in shogatsu (New Year's). This is probably not the best way to eat it. I just chomp on it. There are seeds on them sometimes, these hoshigaki. There are seeds in there, so you wanna be careful. Don't chew well and make sure you get the seeds out. But it basically, it's basically like candy, right? Oh my gosh. All right, no seeds.
00:10:04 John Daub: Let's see how Leo likes hoshigaki. Good. Leo, do you like yogurt? Do you like yogurt? Yes? It's got this really delicious, it's like it's light sweet too. It looks like it's pure candy, but it's not like apricots or something like that. It's got like a lighter sweetness to it. I don't know, it's just one of those things that you have to try it. They're at all the supermarkets right now, all throughout Japan, you'll find hoshigaki. Hoshigaki, gaki meaning kaki. Kaki is the Japanese name for the persimmon. And it's so good. It's like the best thing to eat at shogatsu, as well as mikan (tangerines), which we also eat a lot of. And strawberries are now in season. They're quite expensive. A pack of strawberries runs about 900 yen right now. The good ones, especially from Fukuoka. Yeah, about 900 to a thousand yen for a pack of eight. It's quite expensive, but each one is perfect. Look at that. Yeah. If I eat it, he eats it. It's basically, I check the food to see if it's okay. And if it is, he'll eat it more.
00:12:09 John Daub: Hey, Drake Long is here. Thank you. And, oh, hey, Tedster, TDSDR, for wet wipes to clean up Leo's face after me. How did you know? That is probably the most cutest part of the entire meal. And when he gets yogurt around there, he had an entire yogurt mouth, which just cracks me up. And it's almost heartbreaking to clean it up because it's just so cute. So we're gonna finish his bento. He has a nap around 12:30, and we're a little bit past that, but he's probably gonna go to sleep right after he eats, and then I'll get back to work, because it's the only time I can edit right now. Mama is working so this morning and afternoon it's dada and Leo. We went to the playground and the supermarket as you saw with the bento if you're just tuning in now go back and you can check out the video in the supermarket.
00:13:08 John Daub: Oh my gosh he usually has a bib that he collects all the food that he spits out but he's not really spitting out much he's a good eater you're gonna be big and strong bigger than me good do you want blueberries blueberries tofu shinkansen i was just saying what more yogurt do you like yogurt he says yes oh onion thank you yeah so uh we'll go on little adventures every now and then but Kanae and I were talking we're not going to do too many live streams with Leo in them um it's because he's at an age where he's starting to form his own personality and we don't want to show the bad parts you know sometimes he just uh will get out of control and you don't know when it's going to happen and then he simmers down pretty quickly but we don't want to show that in a live stream right no so uh we'll probably do more edited videos but probably not too many live streams with Leo wow wow at least his bento is going to get completely eaten i'm surprised he's eating as much as he is.
00:15:14 John Daub: Leo do you like it yesterday i wanted to do a live stream uh showing you what Japanese kids get for Christmas some of the toys that they have especially for kids that are Leo's age but unpredictable you know life is unpredictable right now and we had to cancel life is unpredictable so we had to cancel that so maybe we'll do it tomorrow we couldn't do it today because mama's not here but i asked Kanae what did you get for christmas when you were a kid and she didn't have a christmas tree so how do you get presents and everything so i kind of want to hear the japanese side of it it's i think it's quite interesting so we'll see if Kanae and Leo can uh show us the presents one of them is over there this big anpanman and then um on the sixth i'm going to be flying to okayama and i'll be in okayama the sixth seventh eighth and ninth and uh you're gonna come with me to the national park and we're gonna see some things in the center of japan which is an area i don't think a lot of people have been to including like between okayama and tottori it's such a unique area the um hiruzen national park near the oki daisen park so it's right on the border of tottori and okayama i'm gonna be there for three nights and i'm taking yukim with me um he's such an interesting guy he's uh an adventure sportsman uh a very popular model.
