Singapore's Changi Airport Terminal 2 Adventure

Overview

In this episode, John Daub and his wife Kanae explore Singapore's renowned Changi Airport Terminal 2 before boarding an ANA flight to Haneda, Tokyo. After a four-day stay in Singapore, John takes viewers on a walkthrough of what he considers one of the best airports in the world. The video highlights the terminal's unique features, including tropical gardens, iconic carpeting, diverse food options, and traveler amenities like transit hotels and lounges.

John reflects on his many past layovers at Changi, noting the "subculture" of travelers who sleep in the terminal due to its comfort and convenience. The episode also covers a recent fan meetup in Singapore, showcasing gifts received from viewers, including local snacks and souvenirs. Throughout the walk, John and Kanae examine local products like kaya (coconut jam), durian products, and the ubiquitous Merlion mascot merchandise.

The video serves as both a travel guide and an appreciation of Singapore's efficiency, cleanliness, and hospitality. John emphasizes the ease of navigation, the high-speed Wi-Fi, and the unique services available to transit passengers, such as city tours for long layovers. It concludes with the couple heading to their gate, passing through high-tech security, and saying farewell to Singapore.

  • Wi-Fi: The airport offers blazing fast free Wi-Fi, suitable for streaming and work.
  • Security: Security checks often happen at the gate rather than centrally, using high-tech manless passport scanners (thumb scans).
  • Durian Ban: Remember that durian is banned on the MRT (subway) due to its strong smell.
  • Currency: Singapore dollars are polymer (plastic-like) and durable; great for souvenirs.

  • SG: The country code for Singapore, often used in addresses and postcards.
  • Diversity: John highlights Singapore's cultural diversity, with people from China, Japan, Korea, Europe, and America living and working together.

00:00:06 John Daub: Welcome to Changi Airport Terminal 2. I'm about to get on a flight for ANA bound for Haneda, Tokyo. I've been here for 4 days. I really enjoyed my stay in Singapore but I always look forward to coming here to Changi Airport because it's one of the most convenient, everything-in-one-place airports in the entire world.

00:00:25 John Daub: When I was driving here, the taxi driver told me that they're opening up a new terminal to Changi Airport, Terminal 5, which is under construction. And he's like, yeah, it's even going to be bigger than all the other terminals. So I'm like, wow, how can this place get even bigger? But it can. Terminal 2 looks like this. It's actually really big as well as all the other terminals. It has everything including a hotel, shower rooms, gardens in the middle of everything. And it also has a lot of things like one kaya (coconut jam) sitting in the corner. The internet also is pretty good.

00:01:02 Kanae Daub: Hello.

00:01:07 John Daub: Did you enjoy Singapore?

00:01:11 Kanae Daub: Hello everybody. We're in a tropical garden in the airport.

00:01:16 John Daub: Yeah, it's really one of my favorite places. I have actually been in Changi Airport like a dozen times. And several of those times I had to spend the night here just because my flight was leaving early in the morning. It just made sense to be here. Or I was on a layover. I was on a layover for not enough time to get a hotel because hotels can be a little bit pricey when you're a backpacker. I would crash here and spend the night and it was always like this subculture of people who live inside of Changi Airport. It's really cool like that. We're going to take you, look at these flowers. It's really beautiful. Oh, they got carp in it. I saw some carp.

00:02:00 John Daub: So we've got a six and a half, seven hour flight that leaves in an hour and a half. So Kanae and I are just going to take you around Changi Airport a little bit and show you around. And I'm going to show you what it's like here. Wow, we had a really nice meet up and you can see that video yesterday on Saturday. We had about, I don't know, like 50 people I think showed up to say hi. And we have so many gifts. It was, we had to get another bag to check it all in. This is Changi Airport Terminal 2. Of course they have a Starbucks and they have a WHSmith and an electronics store, Victoria's Secret. They have all the, you know, important shops.

00:02:47 John Daub: Oh, can we, let's go take a look at the gates a little bit. So we're leaving the shopping area. This carpet is also iconic. I don't think they've changed the pattern of the carpet in 20 years. I think this is the same carpet that they had 20 years ago. It looks beautiful. I just remember, like I can always remember Changi Airport because of the carpet. Because this carpet pattern is everywhere. And this is a massive airport and it's just one of these iconic airports. Like you could tell from the carpet and the low ceilings. It's not really super high, like all the airports, like Hong Kong in particular. It's just all glass with really high ceilings. Changi stays true to itself with the kind of retro style, kind of funky.

00:04:05 John Daub: The taste of the king, it's the king of fruits. It's the king of stink. That's for sure. When you crack one of these open, everybody knows about it. And it's actually banned to ride on the MRT (Mass Rapid Transit, subway system here). It says no durians allowed. And, ah, this is pretty cool. You can see some of the Singapore gifts. I always show you the ones at Narita Airport, but this one is Singapore's national cake. And we had this. Somebody from the, gosh, I can't remember everybody's name. I apologize. But one of the really nice people at the meetup gave us one of these cakes. It's so good. It had like kind of a coconut to it. Thanks, Linda.

00:05:02 John Daub: Get a little internet experience area. There's a transit hotel. I believe you can take showers. It's just kind of a place to crash. If you don't want to pay for a room or there's no room available, I think they have sofas you people can sleep on, which is pretty convenient. I usually just sleep on the floor somewhere in the corner. They had these comfortable lounge chairs for everybody. It's the carpet, though. It's so iconic.

00:05:42 Kanae Daub: You like the carpet? Yeah, yeah, yeah. We stayed at a hotel. We stayed at the Mercure Hotel, which is part of the Novotel on Stevens. It was nice. All of the Emirates flight attendants and pilots were staying there because during the four days we were there, we saw every single Emirates flight attendant, I think.

00:06:07 John Daub: Oh, hey, one of the viewers gave us these salted egg. We're going to unbox this and do a midnight run, but we got some of these fish skins and salted egg something. Yeah, we got this to unbox when we get back to Japan. That's pretty cool. Wow, thanks, guys. Oh, check it out. We got some dim sum. Steamed custard egg yolk bun. Yeah, this airport is rocking. Well, elevator music, but it's a different kind of rocking. And the prices are pretty reasonable-ish.

00:07:06 John Daub: Oh, there's a Singapore Airlines flight in the distance. So everybody watching in the US, not only is it nighttime where you are, it's daytime here, which just still blows me away. We have, look at that. That's beautiful. And on this side, there is a cafe. And yeah, it was, I think it was like one of these areas I would sleep. And they used to have lounge chairs. I haven't seen them yet, but this is where the zombies from the layovers would stay in these really cool lounge chairs.

00:07:43 John Daub: So we're going to, I'm going to take you inside. Linda, thank you very much. All right, let's go get some coffee. I'm going to take you back. I got about 10 minutes left on this live stream before I got to make my way. We have to make our way to the gate. When we walked in, they told us strictly the gate is far. Just keep that in mind. Oh, look at this Wan, your local cafe. Noodle? I think so. It looks good. Chicken curry. Nice. Oh, they got laksa. I love a good laksa.

00:08:48 John Daub: Singapore is one of my favorite countries just because it's like Tokyo in many ways.

00:09:06 Kanae Daub: Can I said it was like, you said it was like Tokyo, right? Yes.

00:09:11 John Daub: Look at that. I love how they do this. Family zone play area. I mean, what? I didn't know this existed. This must be new. Check it out. They got like slides and stuff. And after midnight I bet you there's a bunch of really zombie-like travelers in here playing in these tube slides or sleeping in them, who knows. It's pretty cool.

00:09:39 John Daub: All right let's get out of here go terminal two I was not joking about that I'm very serious. Oh oh wait wait so where are we I wanted to show you guys um the McDonald's has some sort of weird wagyu burger right now is that nearby I could show you I'm not gonna eat it all right it's at level three can I we're not going to level three okay here's your typical run of the mill um mango and passion fruit and tropical fruit desserts none of which that we're gonna be buying because our we are completely hello this looks good um almond nuts and Singapore cookies look at there's a merlion I like how they buy four get two free well the price oh look there's a merlion whenever you get the merlion on a tin it makes me do a double check I love the merlion it's a lion and yet it has no legs it has a mermaid tail how does it walk around it doesn't it swims but how does it breathe underwater it's got his head above water I guess because it's one of these creepy little shark things instead of a fin it's got his head popping out of the water how does the merlion swim and get around I guess it's just supposed to be a cute mascot oh Toblerone the staple of every national airport those triangles could be a tie pillow or it can be Toblerone guarantee you Toblerone boom oh do they have any see that's weird they don't have any merlions you'd think that they have some merlions there's this national Singapore t-shirts which are pretty cool check it out and look on the front a merlion yeah do merlions growl I'm still really confused about it do they growl or do they just blah blah blah because that's what a fish does there's such thing as a lion fish too they don't growl.

00:12:02 John Daub: Here's another beautiful garden. I met Kanae at another garden and just it's such a tropical place you can feel it in the airport. Bali the Bali airport was renovated and there was some really beautiful tropical gardens in Bali airport but if you're watching this live stream at 720p or it's clear that's that's a testament of Singapore's wi-fi it's beautiful you can you dance here can I there you go that's half a dance all right there's a Starbucks I want to show you guys the merlion because Starbucks has done something pretty crazy the only place we could find the merlion here was at Starbucks and these are like Starbucks merlions check it out Starbucks barista Singapore merlion the problem with it it's like 30 bucks that's cute it is cute but it's like you're gonna like snuggle with it once and you have me for a lifetime so I can't I can't compete with the cute 30 merlion that is a mer teddy bear that's a pretty good way to put it.

00:13:38 John Daub: There's only one main airport that you can come through when you come to Singapore it's this Changi airport Changi airport it just rolls off the tongue Changi just like this shop rolls off the tongue Victoria's Secret we don't have this in Japan you love a good Victoria's Secret right can I no well she won't admit it on camera I'll admit it let's go in there.

00:14:18 John Daub: This is also a great place the the connections to get around from a to b are so clear in Singapore make it so easy yeah I know I'm sorry for the flicker but you can see the connections map oh okay oh there's three so we've seen two of them wow so this is for this cool and so funny yeah in the airport this is the best airport in the world.

00:15:23 John Daub: Yeah I heard about that you can actually um so look the location is in front us if you have how long of a layover do you need or six hours if you have six hour layover tour you can get six hours here you can get a tour into the city that's awesome need the visa though yeah thank you so much that's awesome. So I've actually always wanted to do that, but I've never had a layover it was always in the middle of the night. But if you have a layover of six hours or more this the airport sets up tours that you can go into the city that's so cool so and Singapore we took a taxi from almost one side of the country to the other to meet up with with a friend and and it took about 35 minutes, and it's not a big big country but there's so much stuff packed here in Singapore that makes it really special place yeah that's amazing oh check it out wow there's a swimming pool with the jacuzzi in terminal one I think we're in the wrong place very cool.

00:16:37 John Daub: All right, so we're going to make our way to we have to make hello. Oh really? Okay are you going on the Haneda flight? Yeah, well there's everybody are you alive yeah, just going around town yeah, we'll see you Osaka cool oh, that's great so she lives in Osaka and she watches the show that's pretty cool okay look at this we have a discover Singapore shop and I kind of think that we should discover Singapore hey, what gate are we in can I? Gate 12 eat 12 all right all right well, can I check and we're gonna check check some Singapore stuff oh maybe cycle look at this it is one of the cleanest countries just amazingly clean and safe we're walking around 1 a.m. we felt like we were in Tokyo well, we were downtown I mean oh, yeah, I think we got one of these snacks from one of the viewers gave us these snacks these are really good durian chips anyone well, I look durian and jam you want to try it these are some of the cookies I go pudding oh, check it out it's the merlion don't know I want everything and yet at the same time I can't fit anything more merlions this is awesome oh now they're making they're making fun of it, but this is one reason why it's Singapore so good if you just follow the laws, you don't have anything to worry about right the top five are all in one place yes, please oh look at a glitter on that I love Singapore I love Singapore how much is it? Alright six bucks should we buy for fridge? Yeah, actually, which here pick one well, we're gonna buy it for the refrigerator which one do you want can I get rid of some of the Singapore dollars? This one has you can see through it, which is cool Singapore's got really beautiful money okay, well pick one and I'll give you ten bucks to buy it check it out they have a little India here in Singapore I got good food there okay for fritter show us which one which ones you're getting there you go more lion you're coming home there you go all right, I'll be outside saying goodbye to everybody oh, hey Alexander.

00:20:24 John Daub: I'll shoot we got an amazing magnet collection and a lot of the viewers have been sending us magnets from all over the world and we got some from several different countries that we haven't even visited yet and the magnets getting completely the refrigerators getting completely crowded so see here a Vaughn thank you when will you meet up Peter for the unboxing I don't know it's gonna be soon I'm sure Peters still in the United States and I'm going to Korea tomorrow as soon as I get back yet the money's like plastic, but it's not really I don't know what it is actually I come back tomorrow today and then tomorrow morning first thing in the morning I got to go back to the airport and I fly to Korea for a YouTube creator summit so I'm gonna be in Korea for three days it's gonna that's gonna be a lot of fun the Merlin magnet for can I thank you very much Ram salient Ram is salient she's getting that now I appreciate it I'm gonna show you the magnet collection actually, we got so many gifts from the viewers in Singapore that we're gonna do kind of like a midnight snack with the with the stuff that we got from everybody and that's gonna be a lot of fun it's just it was amazing amount of food I can't but I couldn't believe we had so many people show up everybody was so friendly and I went if you're watching you were at the meetup or you wanted to go I want to say thank you very much that very much because the hospitality in Singapore was an outstanding it's like family was here, you know, everybody knew us and can I felt really happy this is her first trip to Singapore so she felt like it was a part of it's like a part of her family and she wants to come back here now she's already planning how we're gonna go to the Night Safari she's already planning how we're gonna go to the Night Safari.

00:22:13 John Daub: So Changi Airport is also famous for having these really long walkways just corridors that go on and on and that's one of them and when you're stranded here in the middle of the night there's lots of places to chillax, but the hotel if it's open, it's pretty reasonably priced it's not that expensive if you want to we're gonna end this live stream now, but why don't you click the like button? I might extend it if we can get the 250 likes and if you want to write in where you're from, where you're watching this live stream I always like to end to see who's watching this and sometimes we get people from different planets from a galaxy far far away I want to stay but we have to catch the flight I we got some people from Canada and Tampa, Florida we got Los Angeles Kuala Lumpur KL Alberta, Canada, Germany Long Island Montreal Singapore hey viva Vegas hey, Nanda's here hey Nanda Nanda was at the meetup yesterday on Saturday I think it feels like yesterday this way E12, okay, so we'll walk to you towards the gate.

00:23:36 John Daub: That was really cool that the staff was probably the staff might be watching too and they came and showed us some stuff about the airport honestly, this is oh you checked it out love how they've incorporated all so many plants into the airport to all around the city it's like one big garden for me I just so many memories here in Changi Airport SG is the code for Singapore I send a lot of postcards to viewers in Singapore, I think we have maybe about 20 percent now 15 or 20 percent of the supporters on the patreon pace postcard Club are from Singapore so I I'm often rocking writing Singapore and then at the bottom SG for the country of Singapore oh! Oh scoot that's the girl from Osaka is taking a scoot airplane back oh, they officially call these travelators I thought it wasn't a walkalator they call them travelators here learning something new every day they have prayer rooms, which I thought was pretty cool they have all like every there's this is something that not a lot of people know about this but Singapore is one of the most diverse countries in the world in the sense well, of course, it's gonna be America is the most diverse because it's everybody's from everywhere but Singapore is pretty close second I think because it's you walk down the street in Singapore everyone's from everywhere and it's really cool to see that there's people from China, Japan Korea like the area and then you got a lot of Europeans here and now a lot of Americans because businesses that opened up here downtown is one of them it's so like diverse and the English here is awesome everyone speaks perfect English sometimes with a slight accent which which makes it even better travelator sounds cooler travelator, because it feels like you're traveling somewhere when you say travel the travelator, like the terminator these are long ones all right, shall we? All right, we got the 200 likes I'll extend the live stream a little bit, but we are 45 likes short I've got a heart here's some of the booths here's some of the glass areas so you go to, one of the reasons why I wanna get to the gate a little bit earlier is because you have to go through security at the gate oh yeah, these are the places where you can crash in places like this it's so comfortable so even if you're spending the night, they have these chairs that are so comfortable and then right around it, look at this it's just a garden I love this place hello, hello, sorry it's really nice and then when you go to the gate, when you fly, that's when you go through security so we went through passport check and passport check was manless I had to just scan my thumb and put my passport through a scanner and I was through very high tech place and the internet is so blazing fast sounds like a commercial for Changi I know, sorry I just love this place I don't know I just love this place.

00:27:37 John Daub: Okay, I'm taking you all the way to the gate. This is crazy. I think we're gonna get to the two places. I think we're gonna get 50 likes though. Oh, this flight here is going to Guangzhou. Guangzhou in China. Yeah. And then, oh, did you get the Merlion magnet? Yeah. All right. Auto start. That's what I like to hear. So we got everybody's coming in. Everybody wrote in where they were from. The whole world is watching. Hey Maddie, thanks. And yeah, stay safe where you guys are. You can't get on the flight with me and I have been known to take live streams all the way to the airport seat on the flight because I hate I can't say goodbye but I don't think it's gonna happen because we gotta go through security at the gate yeah they're going through security at the gate I don't know where that's going um it's going to Osaka via it's going somewhere I couldn't make it I couldn't make that out alright guys I want to say oh more trees I love trees so hope this was useful I'm not allowed I don't know if you're allowed to film in in Changi Airport or not but I do appreciate it was pretty cool that the staff came to say hi and showed us what you have here in terminal 2 and this is only one of four and soon to be one of five terminals so if you guys are usually the I think this is it can I so if you got to go through Asia go through this airport just pretty cool I don't know I like it I like it it's better than it's better than gosh what are the other options you know Bangkok Airport is pretty good too the new Bangkok Airport and the one in India and Mumbai was awesome I love the new Mumbai Airport but this one to me it just has a lot of I don't know history and a lot of it starts with the carpet so the last 20 seconds tree for everybody it's gonna be just the carpet because we have to go through security this has no we'll show them in in Tokyo this is the the best carpet in the entire world so thanks everybody for watching enjoy the Changi Airport carpet and I'll see you in the next video I'll see you in Tokyo thank you Singapore thank you Singapore thank you Singapore we'll be back soon yeah we gotta go to the night safari they wouldn't let us in because we got there too late tomorrow next time bye everybody.
