Matcha vs Japanese Sake Face Pack Challenge Skincare Experiment
Matcha vs Japanese Sake Face Pack Challenge Skincare Experiment
Overview
In this stay-at-home special, John Daub tackles viewer comments about his aging appearance by experimenting with two popular Japanese skincare ingredients: matcha and sake kasu. Filmed late at night in his Tokyo home, John conducts a "50-50" face pack challenge, applying a matcha-based pack to one half of his face and a sake lees pack to the other.
Joined by his wife Kanae Daub, who provides guidance on proper application techniques, John humorously documents the process from preparation to the final reveal. The video blends beauty advice with John's signature comedic style, exploring whether traditional Japanese ingredients can truly rejuvenate aging skin.
Beyond the entertainment value, the episode offers practical insights into Japanese beauty culture, the benefits of natural ingredients like Uji matcha and sake kasu, and the importance of skincare routines for men. It serves as a lighthearted yet informative look at self-care during the pandemic era.

Japan Travel Tips
- Where to buy: Drugstores like Matsumoto Kiyoshi carry a wide variety of face packs and skincare products.
- Product selection: Look for organic ingredients like Uji matcha or sake kasu for natural skincare.
- Usage: Face packs are typically used after a bath when pores are open.
- Timing: Do not leave packs on too long (around 5 minutes) to avoid drying out the skin.
- Aftercare: Always apply cream or oil after washing off a pack to lock in moisture.
- Frequency: For visible results, use regularly (e.g., three times a week).
Japanese Language & Culture Notes
- Matcha de Bihara (抹茶で美肌): Literally "Matcha for Beautiful Skin." Bihara refers to beautiful skin.
- Sake Kasu (酒粕): The lees or dregs left over from the sake brewing process. Rich in nutrients and often used in skincare and cooking.
- Uji (宇治): A city in Kyoto Prefecture famous for producing high-quality matcha.
- Oyasumi (おやすみ): Casual way of saying "Good night."
- Skincare Culture: In Japan, skincare is not gender-specific; men using face packs and beauty products is common and accepted.
Food & Drink Guide
While this video focuses on skincare, the ingredients are edible grade:
- Matcha (Green Tea): Uji matcha used in the pack is organic and high quality. John jokes about putting it on ice cream.
- Sake Kasu (Sake Lees): The remaining part of the sake brewing process. Contains alcohol and nutrients beneficial for skin.
- Price: Matcha pack around 1,500 yen ($14–$15); Sake Kasu pack around $11.
People
- John Daub: Host and experimenter. Motivated by viewer comments about his aging appearance to try skincare products.
- Kanae Daub: John's wife. Provides practical advice on application techniques and post-pack skincare. Appears reluctantly but helpfully.
- Peter von Gomm: Mentioned by John in passing regarding the benefits of sake for skin (free radicals).
Key Takeaways
- Matcha Benefits: Treats inflammation, improves complexion, diminishes aging signs, and treats oily skin due to antioxidants.
- Sake Benefits: Gets rid of blemishes and sun spots, minimizes aging, soothes eczema and acne, and makes skin softer.
- Routine Matters: Consistency (e.g., three times a week) is key to seeing results.
- Don't Mix: John advises against the 50-50 split for actual results; choose one product per session.
- Moisture Lock: Always apply oil or cream after using a face pack to prevent drying.

00:00:01 John Daub: How do you do everybody? Greetings! Today we're doing a wonderful beauty skincare episode. This is Matcha de Bihara skincare. Matcha has a lot of qualities that are very good for the skin. This is Sake Kasu, the remaining part of the Japanese sake brewing process (sake kasu). This is also a face pack. I happened to find these in a Matsumoto Kiyoshi store. I myself, let me just be honest with you.
00:00:31 John Daub: Being a YouTuber in his 40s—I started in my 30s—I quite often get comments saying, "Why are you looking a little bit old recently, Mr. Daub? Or what's happened to you? You're really letting everything go." It's really hard to live with some of these comments. So I've decided to turn to the bright side. There's a lot of products out there that make us look like we're back in our 30s, right? I'm hoping one of these is the thing. Here in Japan we've got a ton of skincare, a ton of beauty products that might work. Doesn't matter if you're a guy or a girl. I'm just surprised more guys haven't turned to the bright side. I don't know if this actually works, but I'm going to give it a try.
00:01:40 John Daub: I'm quite aware that beauty skincare on YouTube gets millions of views. So I figure it's time—isn't it? You should be brave enough to go into another world. Explore. That's what this whole stay-at-home thing is all about, right? If I can do it—and they can do it—you can do it. That's from Rocky IV, after Rocky completely devastated Ivan Drago in the final fight in Moscow. Sylvester Stallone. So I've got two of these. By the way, it's midnight here. Let's give this a try. I'm going to do the classic 50-50: half matcha on this side of the face, half sake on this side. The reasoning is it'll look absolutely ridiculous, but it gives me a chance to compare the two products.
00:02:52 John Daub: Sake is one of my favorite drinks—it makes you feel warm inside—so I'm hoping it makes me feel warm on the outside and rejuvenates the skin on this side. This matcha, also served warm, has a lot of vitamins. This is Uji matcha. We'll take a closer look at the pack after we've applied it to my face. Now, Kanae is not here. She has refused to help me for good reasons. This is more of an embarrassment to her sex than a proud moment.
00:03:43 John Daub: I've done face packs before. This white clay pack is like 10 years old. You'd put it in a bowl, mix with water, add a little essential oil, mix it up, put it all over your face. After it starts cracking and getting hard, you wash it off and feel great. I used to do it all the time, but it's been years. I don't like the chemicals in pre-mixed ones, so I buy white clay and do it myself. See? I know a little bit about face packs. That's where I got that youthful glow—that and the soap I used for this thumbnail, which I learned later isn't good for your face. We're learning as we go along.
00:04:34 John Daub: Let's examine the two. This is Matcha de Bihara, a beautiful 100% organic tea powder face pack. The color looks impressively green—the greener the matcha, the more impactful. This is pretty mild, like lime green, minty. Uji is in Kyoto, so this has got to be the good stuff—it's marked number one. Made in Japan, from Bihara skincare, 1500 yen, about $14 or $15. This is Sake Kasu pack (sake kasu). Kasu is the remaining part in the sake process. Also made in Japan, about $11. They all have a little alcohol, which is why I can't use some, but I'm giving this a try. This could go horribly wrong or amazingly right. There's only one way to find out, boys. My audience is over 70% male, so I'm not sure they're tuning in. It's up to you, ladies.
00:06:20 Kanae Daub: You're going to join us?
00:06:23 John Daub: That's Kanae. Things haven't gone wrong yet. This smells very matcha-y. You want to try? Can you eat this? It says it's organic, so you could probably eat this—put it on ice cream. So you're going to help me?
00:07:06 Kanae Daub: Yeah, I can help. I'm just going to sleep now.
00:07:11 John Daub: It's okay. This is for science. Beauty—when you're trapped at home and need to make content. Just smell it. And smell this one.
00:07:31 Kanae Daub: It's more sake. This really smells like sake, like the remaining... this has just a slight hint of green tea, but some other cosmetic smell.
00:07:45 John Daub: All right, let's give it a try. Classic 50-50. You better wash your face.
00:07:50 Kanae Daub: I did with soap. You need to use... Wet face. Hot water better.
00:08:10 John Daub: Can you turn the gas on?
00:08:13 Kanae Daub: Yeah, the gas is off.
00:08:19 John Daub: Because it's also good in the bath?
00:08:23 Kanae Daub: No, no. Inside the bath, you can use it inside the bath.
00:08:33 John Daub: How many of you guys have done face packs before? If you're in your 40s, having a daily routine is not a bad idea.
00:08:43 Kanae Daub: Yeah, normally people do the face pack after bath.
00:08:47 John Daub: I just took a bath. This is what I look like before the face pack. Should I do a before and after? The before pictures have to look real.
00:09:26 Kanae Daub: Oh, you're gonna use this. Which color?
00:09:30 John Daub: This is supposed to keep the pack off your face. Classic half and half. We're starting with matcha because the color is very impactful. So how do you do it?
00:10:04 Kanae Daub: You typically apply the green tea pack to your face. You don't apply directly to the face from the package. Put it in your hand. Like this, musket size.
00:10:47 John Daub: A musket size? Like a musket ball from the Revolutionary War? Oh, this is kind of nasty. It's too much—you do half.
00:10:56 Kanae Daub: Yeah. Wow. It's not musket.
00:11:01 John Daub: Looks like someone's been eating grass in the front yard again. All right, classic half and half. Thanks guys for joining us. We're applying this like they do in other YouTube shows.
00:11:28 Kanae Daub: How do I do it so that it's not... I can help you.
00:11:33 John Daub: Oh, you can help me? Why does it need to be wet?
00:11:46 Kanae Daub: To lock in the moisture. You have to lock in the moisture.
00:11:54 John Daub: Oh, wow, this is interesting. Oh, it's nice and cool. We're already getting comments that I've aged. Well, guess what? After this, all of you can be silent because you're going to be doing this. I will have gone back in time. This is a time machine. The nose? It's like the armpit of the nose.
00:12:27 Kanae Daub: Yeah.
00:12:28 John Daub: Oh, look at that beautiful green. Oh, I feel younger. I'm in a time machine going back to 2013. So you put the pack on the eyebrow? Can you put it on the eyelid? What about sideburns and ears? My ears look just as youthful as 10 years ago.
00:13:05 Kanae Daub: Your ears? Okay.
00:13:06 John Daub: I've seen people on TV put it on their ears. Should I have shaved? Ladies don't have this problem. Should I have shaved before we started? I have a four-day shadow. But if you have scratches from shaving, it's gonna hurt.
00:13:33 Kanae Daub: That's a good point. If you shave and have scratches, the pack might hurt, so better not to shave.
00:13:41 John Daub: Should we need more?
00:13:44 Kanae Daub: No, you wanna do half, right?
00:13:46 John Daub: Yeah, but make sure it's thick—no weak spots. Somebody wrote in Shrek. No, this is Two-Face from Batman. Is this thick enough? Looks like they smashed up edamame. Incredible Hulk, Yoda. I think we can do better. It's important to get it deep into your pores.
00:14:48 Kanae Daub: It's okay? Mm.
00:14:07 John Daub: Should I not move my face? Be like steel face? Some say not to get close to eyelids. I disagree—you have to.
00:14:55 Kanae Daub: It's five minutes. Both five minutes.
00:15:01 John Daub: Oh, it's a five-minute pack? It's already three minutes. That smells like a sake brewery now.
00:15:14 John Daub: Oh, gosh, that smells so good—like sake Kit Kats. Oh, it's nice and cold. This feels so good. Some people say my career is ruined. Well, I'm turning to the bright side—a YouTube makeup channel.
00:15:41 Kanae Daub: You're going to make a YouTube makeup channel?
00:15:44 John Daub: I think I'd like to go with different kinds of materials. There's blueberry—lots of organic materials utilized in this science. John's Beauty Face Pack—Japanese Beauty Face Pack. Oh, this is very calming. You want to get it into the pores. Oh, that's good.
00:16:16 Kanae Daub: I don't want to touch your eyes.
00:16:18 John Daub: Oh, really? Go into the eyes. I've got patches underneath. Oh, you missed a spot—no weak points. Just cake it on. Can I put it here? Oh, yeah. It's mixing underneath the nose. I feel it working. There's some tingling. No, I just made that up—no tingling. That means I'm not turning into the Hulk.
00:17:01 John Daub: Wow. This is my biggest problem—I gotta take off 10 years in this area. This area has been raided by the green. It's not quite parallel. If I go like this, it's scary. Turn off the lights—is it Halloween? Hello. That's pretty creepy. Hi, kids. This is good. This is so wrong. This is not going to go the way I hoped. Complete disaster.
00:18:36 John Daub: Typically I go with clay pack, but these are different. We went to Matsumoto Kiyoshi to look for face masks. We didn't find any, but I wasn't leaving empty-handed. In 30 seconds—like supermarket spree game show where contestants fill carts in five minutes and win it all plus cash—I grabbed these. Took me back 10 years to when I used clay pack and looked better. I have to get into a routine, guys. I'm very competitive—watching Michael Jordan's Last Dance on Netflix. To compete, go out every day and do your best. You don't take a day off. The face doesn't take a day off.
00:20:05 John Daub: You sure you don't want to try it?
00:20:06 Kanae Daub: Yeah, I'm okay.
00:20:11 John Daub: So what do I do now? Has it been five minutes?
00:20:28 Kanae Daub: If you do too much time, your skin's gonna dry.
00:20:36 John Daub: Oh, we don't want that. It's still wet. Wash it now—it's time.
00:20:45 John Daub: Everyone's saying okay. Whatever you do, do not make an emoji from this for the Discord server. This is Halloween—for beauty purposes. Oh, no, I forgot the music. This is the transformation. Do I look younger? Will it work? It got in my eye—it's burning. It tastes like sake. Don't eat it—it's organic.
00:22:26 John Daub: Okay. Have I gone back in time? Become the Hulk? Is my face green? Do I look like a younger, more beautiful me? Pan up. Do it more dramatically. I have to do the after picture. Did it work? I'm glowing. It worked. It feels smoother, but which side is smoother? I'll eat that later. We have to do it proper. The question is... Which side was green? And this was sake? I shouldn't have done 50-50. This eye looks better this side. I look hideous—unbalanced.
00:24:40 Kanae Daub: Green tea better.
00:24:41 John Daub: Yeah. I'm going to have to use green tea to balance the sake. They're two different looks. My eyes are unbalanced—like that Seinfeld episode where Jerry shaves his chest and ends up shaving it all. I feel very unbalanced.
00:25:09 Kanae Daub: I think tomorrow you can do... So you think let it ride? Like green and white tomorrow.
00:25:26 John Daub: So what did we learn? I've learned I'll never be a beauty YouTuber—there'll be a petition to stop this. But I'm confident in my ability to be a man and suck it up. You have to do things to keep it fun at home. Face pack is like cooking—all worries go away.
00:26:06 Kanae Daub: After face pack, better put cream or oil.
00:26:10 John Daub: I didn't buy any—only had 30 seconds. It's gonna dry.
00:26:14 Kanae Daub: Pack took everything out.
00:26:24 John Daub: So all the blackheads and gook from three years. What should I put on now? We got to get... Apparently this continues. Now we apply the oil. What kind is this?
00:26:34 Kanae Daub: You can use my oil.
00:26:38 John Daub: Oh, so you have oil? Am I gonna break out? I have a big live stream tomorrow. Wow, I look younger—like I've gone back in time in Marty's DeLorean. The final decision is up to you watching. Did I turn back the clock?
00:27:42 Kanae Daub: No.
00:27:43 John Daub: Did I look younger by applying these simple beauty techniques? This side from the classic 50-50 is tighter, brighter, peppier. This sake side—nothing wrong, but like sake, it makes skin drunk and sag. Don't do 50-50—use one or the other. You've learned what not to do. Matcha gets 4.5 out of 5 stars, sake a solid 4. Use regularly, three times a week for weeks to see change. I recommend this for all of you.
00:29:02 John Daub: Some YouTubers said I should name my audience. I call them everybody. For ladies watching—and 70% guys, that's why only 500 watching, guys thinking "what is this crap?"—I should do avocado pack with tortilla chips next. This is plain white clay mask—it dries skin, but I used it 10 years ago. Add water, mix—it made me feel good, relaxing, worries gone. Does not make you less of a dude. You'll have respect of thousands of ladies—just don't tell them. Can I thank you so much for the help?
00:30:23 Kanae Daub: You're welcome.
00:30:26 John Daub: I didn't expect you to stay up. I hope you learned something. Click Like—not a lot did, probably dislikes coming. In my defense, try new things—life is short, live dangerously.
00:30:56 Kanae Daub: You want to use this one again? Yeah. Probably tomorrow.
00:31:06 John Daub: Because I have to balance the droopiness. You can tell—it looks droopy. I'm taking questions. Alma: my husband loves it, I make soap from our lemon tree. Awesome. Wally: more beauty videos with John. Wow, encouraged. Kelvin: like shaving. Can we get Kanae's skincare routine? Kanae, how do you keep your skin nice and young?
00:31:53 Kanae Daub: Trim your eyebrow.
00:31:58 John Daub: Why would I trim them? Thailand, Seattle, Pennsylvania, Netherlands, Argentina, San Francisco, Denmark, Indonesia, Belgium. Wow, such an audience. Shout out Gamaldance for Danish fans.
00:32:29 Kanae Daub: My skincare? I think I don't do anything special. I'm not expert on beauty. I just wash my face with organic soap. And like this, I have it. Organic coconut soap.
00:33:41 John Daub: Does it pass the smell test? Yeah, handmade soap. And lotion? We got stuff from Bali—that place was really good, hard to get outside Indonesia. We spent hours there.
00:34:40 Kanae Daub: Yeah, I bought many soaps.
00:34:49 John Daub: Skål to Danish fans. Skål, everybody. Skål, Kanae. This is for the sake side to balance the droop. I got nothing else. Thanks for allowing Kanae to express herself—start of a new channel?
00:35:23 Kanae Daub: No! Beauty care in Japan.
00:35:25 John Daub: Thank you for the content—appreciate Scott. I don't think I'm gonna be a beauty YouTuber.
00:35:34 Kanae Daub: You can do it. Only in Japan Beauty.
00:35:40 John Daub: Yeah, with guest stars—I'll be Goofus and Gallant. Misty: people popping in seeing John with hairband and liquor—go back 30 minutes. The takeaway: benefits of matcha and sake on skin. Matcha treats inflammation, improves complexion, diminishes aging signs, treats oily skin, all types—magic elixir with antioxidants. Drink it or wear it.
00:37:31 John Daub: Sake benefits: gets rid of blemishes, sun spots, minimizes aging—lessen alcohol you drink. Has free radicals—good for Peter von Gomm. Brighter, tighter skin, soothes eczema, acne. I had acne as teen. Makes skin softer—sake from rice, essence of life in Asia.
00:39:02 John Daub: Thank you for tolerating this. Questions in comments. Appreciate subscribing—that's notifications. If not getting them, unsubscribe/resubscribe, log out/in. Goodnight everybody.
00:39:38 Kanae Daub: Goodnight.
00:39:39 John Daub: This is so worth it—I look 20 again.
00:39:45 Kanae Daub: Yeah, no.
00:39:46 John Daub: This is the last time. Oyasumi.
