00:00:00 John Daub: No see. Hope everyone's doing well. This is a life update, more or less, of a YouTuber who has become a father and is a husband and has to make these choices in order to make life work perfectly. And it's been really hard. How you doing, everybody? This has been a long time coming. I think the last live stream was on April 30th. So it's been about a week since the last update. And I got some email messages asking if I was okay. And I'm doing pretty good. It's been a really eventful week at the home and not so much for the YouTuber part.
00:00:30 John Daub: I think it's really hard to turn off being a YouTube creator. It's something that if you're doing it full time, it's something that you can't really turn off so well. When we got married, Kanae Daub knew exactly who I was and what I do and was okay with it. In fact, she's very proud of the work that I've done. And I'm proud of her evolution and helping out this channel. Because I like to think that Only in Japan Go is our channel. It's a community channel. And it's also a place for Kanae Daub to talk with you about Japan.
00:01:00 John Daub: And since we had a child about almost two months ago now, it's crazy how time has been flying. My responsibilities are all over the place. And this week, I had to be more of a husband and I had to be more of a father than I was a YouTube creator. And that's the reason why I haven't been doing any live streams for the last week. That doesn't mean I've stopped completely. That means I'm trying to make sure I have my priorities straight. And once I understand the role of being a father and a husband now, I think I can move back into being also a YouTube creator. And I think finding the time and making sure that you can do all of those roles to the best of your ability.
00:02:00 John Daub: And it's 100% possible to do. You need to focus on the most important things, which is your family. And once you have that understood, and you know the direction that you want to go, and you understand how it works, because being a father is the first time with me, it's much easier to do the YouTube creator stuff. I'm actually at the mercy of the baby. I've learned this as a YouTube creator and a father and a husband. I'm now number three. I used to be number one then I got married and became number two now number three and actually my wife's father is here sleeping too and I might even be number four I don't know I don't really count. I just know that the baby's asleep and by the way thank you for the community for the baby monitor it's awesome. My shift as the number three guy is from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. which is great because it gives me time to edit some videos and sort of catch up on the work but also means that I don't get a lot of sleep.
00:03:13 John Daub: My priority right now is to make sure that my wife gets like six to eight hours of sleep so she's very rested for tomorrow but because it's the middle of the night and I have nobody else to talk to we have each other so I thought we would talk about you know the channel life travel in Japan just about anything. Drinking one of these really nifty beers uh my friend Eric Surf6 just drank one of these on his Instagram post these are pretty creative check it out just I'm gonna pan down look what they've done with the top here first of all I when I saw this I thought that this was one of those old 1970s tab opener beers this is actually the entire beer turns into a jockey mug for drinking it just check this out because I believe I earned this one for today.
00:03:54 John Daub: That was loud safe you not safe not safe not good all right just wait a moment stay here this place is gonna smell like a dorm room they didn't write that on the packaging it's on the carpet all right now I can't hide this from Kanae Daub now if she comes here in the morning she's gonna smell it baking soda and peroxide or bleach all right I just ruined a new t-shirt because I don't have a towel here all right okay sit back down and I'll show you what I got here so I'm gonna go ahead and show you what I got here this is turning into a disaster this is what happens when you don't live stream every day.
00:05:01 John Daub: Do you see what's happened here this is a mark of genius they have taken the top off somebody said you know what they say if you take nose grease and go like this it'll get rid of the bubbles yeah it's the oil on your nose that does that see what happened they opened up the entire top of the beer it's genius so now you can just drink it like a mug you know you can just drink it like a mug it's good the problem is that half of it is on the floor it's a very big problem but being a father means that you're very used to cleaning up messes I've discovered over the last seven weeks that poo pee throw up and other fluids are very important to clean up right away and I should have had a towel ready or a utility belt of things for cleaning.
00:06:17 John Daub: It has been an exhausting seven weeks but a very good one over this time I've seen our son Leo which in Japanese is Rio but actually the name Leo in English is spelled in Japanese which is so confusing so you know what his name is Rio but you can call him Leo that would be his English name. In Japanese is Rio which means like center of wisdom it's a kind of a cool name and he looks like he's very wise he looks like an old man look at his hair he has less hair than me he looks very wise for his age and he stares at you and will just keep looking at you until he figures it out and he hasn't figured much out but you can tell he's processing inside of there. So you can call him Rio or you can call him Leo we all know who you're talking about it's all good John picked a name that works in both languages yet somehow makes it more complicated I want to leave it up to you you know you can call whatever you think is best I actually like the name Rio rio I'll be honest with you but Duran Duran um made a song called Rio and referred to Rio as a girl so you know that kind of ruined it for me because I grew up in the Duran Duran era however with that said I think it could be a boy or a girl and there's a lot of residents of Rio de Janeiro who would think that it's a multi-sexual thing just saying.
00:08:02 John Daub: But you know even though I'm not live streaming and haven't been able to bring you the wonderful content that introduces Japan to you in so many different directions I have been quite busy postcards are ready to go out I've been actually have this is it's a pretty cool postcard for this month um actually there's a there's about there's a lot of them that's that's this is stack two here so there's a lot of postcards going out this month if you want one actually you can go on to Patreon and get one and I'll take it to Tokyo Station tomorrow morning and it will be sent with everybody else's with a Tokyo stamp on it shameless plug. I also have some goodies here and one of the other things that I do while I'm on hiatus is I'm going to be doing a little bit of a notice I don't I'm not really on hiatus I'm just kind of been busy um is to try different kinds of foods to see what I could send to our Patreon supporters so I want to shout out to Edo thank you so much I saw that come in Edo kanpai and Michael Sassano hey John totally been missing you and your live streams but family always comes first thank you for keeping us updated on how you and the family are doing stay safe thank you Michael always and air the Ron uh creator of the air buggy sorry keeping you all in prayers tomodachi keeping you all in prayers so it actually thank you my friend.
00:09:35 John Daub: Yeah you know another reason why I haven't been doing live streams it's not just the family thing it's just the situation in Tokyo was pretty bad and we're just not sure what's going on actually the I don't know anybody that's been vaccinated um there's a fourth wave that looks really bad but in my neighborhood you could hardly tell everything's open people are out everyone's wearing a mask though but it's not like it's a lockdown the playgrounds are full of kids parents are playing with their kids today. I look at this you know outside everyone is shopping it's a fourth wave with another variant that's very contagious but people aren't treating it as such so makes me a little bit so I'm not sure really what direction I should take and I think there's a lot of other creators and people that are not sure what to do I think you can't stop living your life in a way but I live in Tokyo and I'm not supposed to be traveling to other prefectures so it leaves me in a very tough spot.
00:10:35 John Daub: This last week was so-called Golden Week it's a time where most people in Japan will just travel everywhere around the country and I stayed here did the midnight shift I go to sleep at six or seven I wake up at 10 or 11 and then I take a walk and eat breakfast and take care of the baby a little bit more and take a cat nap or a long nap depends on the day and then I wake up and I do it again and then here I am and I've been editing by the way the Kickstarter video is finished it's just being approved for anybody back to Kickstarter for like ages ago it's finished it's been approved it's going to go up like Wednesday like maybe in the next few days just a little update I'll update the Kickstarter too I appreciate the backers it's a great video it's about an hour long I kept inflating it too while it was being approved so keeps getting longer.
00:11:39 John Daub: All right let's get some food here and I will take some of your questions because I love your questions big Vic from Canada I'm working hard and good D Visalia I'll crack a cold one too hey cheers come by I actually like this when you open up the whole top it changes the feeling of drinking a can of beer just it's a really unique experience it's such a simple thing I don't know why nobody's done this before or have they I don't you know I always wonder if Asahi came up with this. In the Kit Kat world for those of you that are wondering there's a new Kit Kat here it is a maple flavored one and all the Canadians will be pretty happy to see this one it's made with Canadian maple syrup I think the cartel up there in Canada maple sugar these are really good. I'm wondering if I should send these to our diamond supporters can't wait to go back to Japan Naomi I hope you can it looks like October I've been talking with people at the tourism office to see when that's going to happen here hey glad to see you John here's something for the family happiness fund thank you I've been eating a lot of delivery food look that's the proof and this goes towards keeping my other half happy.
00:13:15 John Daub: All right so this is you know oh my gosh it smells like maple candy it's melted because I put these on top of the toaster oven and then Kanae Daub turned it on and then melted half of them but this one looks like it's not too bad I said to her wait are you baking something she was yes I said do you know what's on the top she goes no I said those are Kit Kats she goes oh so I put them to freeze it really fast and yeah you know what you can change the shape of the Kit Kats but you do not change the flavor this is so good if you like maple syrup this is really good this is one of the best ones that I've had in a long time but anything with maple is good and my friend Danny who's in Ottawa near Montreal he sends me maple syrup from Canada and I still got a little bit left Danny and I appreciate that and I'm thinking of making waffles tomorrow for breakfast because I am an honorary Canadian apparently I was dubbed that thank you Jason.
00:14:39 John Daub: But this Kit Kat might be the best of them all this is the apple pie Kit Kat from 2020 2019 slightly aged I won't eat it it's a collector's item. What else has been going on um so there are a lot of things that I want to cover over the next couple of months for Only in Japan Channel it's this one here and if you don't know I actually have a new channel most people that are going there just think it's the old channel and they're subscribed but they're not you were suggested that video because you like what I produce and you should go and click and subscribe now. There's some videos coming on there including this one which I'm working on as soon as I get the Kickstarter one this is the one where we had a lot of you submit videos I put that all together and that's going to be coming up in an episode soon I wanted to wait to 100,000 subscribers now we passed that and then you know a baby came and life you know made it really crazy.
00:16:02 John Daub: Alaminox you doing Almanex I believe every food cans designed the container to the title at first ah so basically what Asahi beer did was just do what food cans do that's pretty smart but no one I've never seen anybody drink a can of tuna fish maybe we will see that on the internet now but works pretty well what doesn't work is that you should drink it outside because it spills all over your carpet Tony P hey John happy to hear from you and your family yeah I hope your family is doing well family comes first Rio is growing up pretty fast P.S. don't let work know I am here I shouldn't have said that a lot I hope you're wearing headphones Tony um thank you and it's nice to see you again it's nice to see you in the daimyo unboxing we I sent them the blueberry I still got some here blueberry chips and blueberry gum to see how that was how that tastes and apparently they're pretty good the senbei is extremely popular.
00:17:04 John Daub: I also have some goodies here this is baby formula in Japan right and baby formula I don't know this one can cost about 25 dollars um and this one is from Inaga and there's about five brands of baby formula and I really don't know what the difference is between this and if it's comparable to the ones um Similac I guess is one in the United States how it compares with it which one's better should I be importing it from the United States look that Rio is half Japanese he's half American he's half Indian he's half English he's half German so should I be getting I mean he's mixed right like me because I'm half Indian half American half German half English right and Kanae Daub is all Japanese so should I be getting baby formula from all the different countries because he might like it should I be getting a masala flavored baby formula I've been thinking about this a lot like how do I raise him to be you know does formula count I don't like what's the difference I really can't understand there's just a lot of information so if you do have some information leave me in the comments below.
00:18:29 John Daub: But uh Kanae Daub had to stop breastfeeding and move on to formula because it was just a lot uh it was a lot to do so I want to show you something um to make Kanae Daub's life easier I got her something all right we're gonna take a field trip now but I need you to do something very important I need you to be very very quiet because we're gonna walk past the baby and if you say anything I swear I will grab you through the screen and I bought this on Amazon in America and it makes formula like it's some kind of espresso machine and when the king wakes up I make him a baby formula espresso and I don't know that the reviews were mixed so I and we don't have ounces in America he is milliliters and ounce is so I had to in the ounces but I had water so guess you can make tea water to make tea and just so you know if he wakes up I'm gonna have to leave you suddenly all right we are safe barely this kid wakes up it's lights out all right don't talk about Fight Club don't talk about the baby.
00:22:46 John Daub: All right there's a lot of stuff going on um yeah thank you for the potato head thank you for all the ducks do not in fact make sure you lock these ducks up after dark because apparently they come alive and become animated and start quacking um got this here and I'm going to try this with you live this is white peaches which are from Okayama Prefecture this comes from Okayama Prefecture this is what I'm trying because I'm always looking for new confections to send to people on Patreon and never talk about the baby Fight Club guy.
00:23:40 John Daub: All right so we're gonna try this here this is white peach mochi actually this looks so good I'm I think I might try to get some of these for the dinosaur borders for this month but for next month oh oh wow all right and now it smells like beer and peaches in here what a wonderful combination they have a perforated easy opening so it does look like white peaches the bag around it does all right let's try one this is white peach mochi they're like little firecrackers like you know remember those things you the snappers you take them you throw them at little girls remember that you ride on your bicycle your BMX bicycles with a handful of them you ride past these the girls on the corner there and you throw it at it right away and you watch their faces from a distance going and start crying you did that I know a lot of you guys did it I grew up in the 80s all right you know these things with gunpowder in it and you just throw you know what I mean people know what I'm talking about caps.
00:25:27 John Daub: This white peach mochi all right we're gonna try this or poppers poppers or white snap poppers but they're pretty cool you would throw them and then you'd run away everybody did it come on admit it let's try this Jacob writes not me Jacob don't worry we know you did it it was Jacob whoever denied it what is it goes whoever smelt it dealt it so it's very very good mochi very soft very sophisticated it's a white anko paste and it's infused with white peach like a very sweet peach taste it's very good I'm not sure if it's worth the price I paid for it though not sure I'm on the fence I have to eat another one make sure whoever smelt it dealt it Leo's got a lot to learn a lot I'm gonna watch a lot of 1980s movies the good one you know come at Rambo we've been to the nerds Ferris Bueller's Day Off you've got to learn learn a lot that's pretty good I'm not sure if it's worthy to be sent to people from Japan though it's okay slightly disappointed I'm actually happier with the maple Kit Kats.
00:27:56 John Daub: Um that's about it um kind of a shame of Goonies as well back to the future absolutely Karate Kid we might pass on that until he's old enough to understand that his father is not in the world um I've been very happy by the way just want to point out the camera this is the A1 all right this camera is amazing it's been taking phenomenal pictures of the baby and also video it's amazing um so I I've actually kind of upset that I haven't been able to film more because I have the camera to make something beautiful and I can't even travel to film anything it's kind of just kind of disappointing. Um that's a 12 to 24 millimeter lens it's very nice one but I actually prefer the 35 millimeter 1.4 G Master it's GM it's nice lens um I want to show you the video that I took today okay I want to leave you with something positive so let me see what I got here I took a video with all right I'm slightly worried about Leo lately he prefers Beethoven to Mozart all right I thought that was a little bit odd you know Beethoven's fifth it's kind of dark you know he was actually getting off on that all right Mozart very talented man Salzburg Vienna didn't like it that much he didn't react the same way I was surprised that he preferred Beethoven over Mozart I don't know debate amongst yourselves but the one thing we do share a passion for is Mendelssohn Felix Mendelssohn you know the Italian Symphony right number four I don't think a lot of your class some of you don't listen to classical music do you you don't even know who Felix Mendelssohn is it's okay I'm with you all you know is Mozart right and maybe Beethoven perhaps you know Schumann no.
00:30:17 John Daub: Um made this video I gotta make sure that I don't show you anything Kanae Daub breastfeeding that would be bad all right so I'm gonna open this one up here how do I open it up I did it all right here it is I see I put it in this window to make sure I don't show you something I shouldn't all right this was taken with the A1 and you can see he's jamming to Mendelssohn maybe it's me jamming actually but he was jamming with me I can't even turn on the volume because I can't jam he's doing what I'm doing.
00:32:14 John Daub: All right um we have a meltdown here um almond ox once the world stops eating itself and we go to travel again I am planning a trip to Kagoshima to Wakayama whoa the question is will the JR Rail Pass cover such trip and full length of time it will the full country JR Rail Pass this does not bode well for us folks um it was nice knowing you. Um all right promise I'll do another live stream really soon again I do appreciate all of you waiting patiently as I sort of figure things out and get back to you um but I have a lot of really good live streams here in Tokyo for the next week and then I'm going to be taking you around the country again in two weeks all right the king has spoken it is time for me to leave Lisa D his mom's a dancer of course he likes strong boys it's true actually you're absolutely right on target with that you're right on target for that.
00:33:44 John Daub: I think it's time for me to go if he starts to cry he might wake up Kanae Daub that would be bad we want Kanae Daub to sleep all right all right everybody leave me a question below if in the YouTube video if you have any ideas for me to cover here in Tokyo I will do my best um Nekochan 62 thank you I'm I might be meeting up with Eric Surf6 who's another YouTuber and see what we can do together he's a fun guy and I'm looking forward to that very much. Oh wait he put himself back to sleep yes bonus Peter is your wife if your wife asks it was MW more whiskey men extended time he's no his eyes are open this is evil it's over I'm doomed I better go make the milk luckily I have a machine to do it in 30 seconds or less thanks everybody leave me a comment below and I will give you updates as we go along on I've been doing it to all of our Patreon supporters but I'll put updates on Instagram anybody follows Instagram Only in Japan TV is the name there I use stories a lot and I'll post some pictures and some updates there.
00:35:23 John Daub: And the Discord server is absolutely a place that you gotta go wee oh I gotta nosh okay okay okay watch the baby hold on hold on just watch the baby the screen is stay asleep Leo we just have a this looks bad all right the Discord server we have a like clubhouse function and I'm going to be doing after I give the baby the milk and stuff I'll be back here at like 3 in the morning and I'm gonna do one of these things like a clubhouse where you can talk with me okay a little bit in like around 3 maybe all right actually update failed that's why I turned the Wi-Fi off but the clubhouse feature on the Discord server is pretty cool actually it's better than Clubhouse in a way I think but we have 11,000 people on our Discord server which is pretty cool so it'd be pretty cool to talk with you and especially when I'm bored and if you join our Discord server I'll be doing this a lot more I think it's called Fireside Chat or something I'm hoping he puts himself to sleep oh Fireside Chat or something here so this is the Only in Japan server and then there's a OIJ Fireside Chat here on the side if you go in there you can just start talking and stuff so I'll do one at like 3 in the morning maybe because I gotta stay up baby I gotta be up till 6 hey Jim Discord event at the top of the hour let's do it it's gonna be short thanks everybody leave me a comment below if you have any questions I do appreciate the support and I do have an insider notes coming as well as a bunch of stuff it's getting there it's a work in progress in fact it's already done just gotta put up thank you talk to you soon baby keep focused stay on target.
