Summary

Japanese McDonald's Meal meets Pokémon

Overview

In this rainy season live stream, John Daub visits a McDonald's in Monzen-Nakacho, Tokyo, to test out the limited-time Pokémon collaboration menu. Braving the downpour without an umbrella initially, John sets up at a nearby bus stop to unbox and review three specific items: a Pikachu Peach Calpis Milkshake, a Pikachu Banana McFlurry, and a Pokémon Apple Custard Pie. The video captures the unique atmosphere of eating fast food outdoors in Tokyo during the tsuyu (rainy season), complete with passing buses and curious crows.

The highlight of the visit becomes a minor mix-up when John receives a regular apple pie instead of the Pokémon-themed custard pie. Demonstrating the high level of customer service in Japan, he politely returns to the counter to exchange it, resulting in a happy resolution. Beyond the food review, John shares insights into McDonald's Japan's unique menu items like the Texas Burger and Tamago Teriyaki Burger, and explores the surrounding neighborhood, noticing unusual pasta offerings at Mister Donut and strict bicycle parking regulations.

This episode offers a candid look at daily life in Tokyo, blending food culture with practical travel observations. John interacts with his live stream audience, answering questions about vaccination status and future travel plans to Tohoku, while showcasing the charm of local areas like Monzen-Nakacho that retain a Showa era atmosphere.

Japan Travel Tips

  • McDonald's Japan Menu: Look for limited-time collaborations (like Pokémon) and unique items like the Texas Burger or Tamago Teriyaki Burger.
  • Rainy Season: Prepare for sudden downpours (tsuyu). Outdoor seating may be limited; bus stops can serve as impromptu tables.
  • Customer Service: Japanese staff are generally very accommodating. If you receive the wrong item, politely asking for a correction usually yields a quick and smiling resolution.
  • Bicycle Parking: Be careful where you park bicycles in Tokyo. Red zones indicate strict no-parking areas where bikes may be removed by city management.
  • Seasonal Items: McDonald's often releases seasonal flavors (e.g., Peach Calpis in summer). Check the menu boards for current collaborations.
  • Cost: The Pokémon meal items are affordable; the pie was 150 yen, and the milkshake was 120 yen.

Japanese Language & Culture Notes

  • Itadakimasu: Said by John before eating the pie. A phrase used before meals to express gratitude for the food.
  • Yamete kudasai: Seen on a sign (Please stop). In this context, it warns people not to feed pigeons.
  • Tsuyu: The rainy season in Japan (June–July). John notes the weather is chilly despite being summer.
  • Showa Era: John mentions the nearby alleys look like they stopped in time during the Showa era (1926–1989), indicating a retro, nostalgic atmosphere.
  • Karen Mode: John references the Western concept of an entitled customer but contrasts it with his polite interaction, highlighting cultural differences in conflict resolution.
  • Non-step Bus: John notes the buses are "non-step," meaning they are low-floor buses accessible for wheelchairs and strollers.

Food & Drink Guide

  • Pikachu Peach Calpis Milkshake 04:23
    • Description: Peach flavored milkshake using Calpis brand syrup.
    • Price: 120 yen.
    • Verdict: Refreshing and good for a hot day, though John notes it is chilly during the rain.
  • Pikachu Banana McFlurry 06:08
    • Description: Banana flavored soft serve with mix-ins.
    • Verdict: Good, but John is not a big fan of bananas. Comes with a unique spoon-straw hybrid.
  • Pokémon Apple Custard Pie 15:29
    • Description: Deep-fried pie with apple and custard filling.
    • Price: 150 yen.
    • Verdict: John's favorite. Hot pie on a cool day. Perfect balance of custard and apple.
  • Texas Burger 21:18
    • Description: Burger with thick-sliced bacon and special sauce.
    • Verdict: John's all-time favorite McDonald's Japan item; highly recommended when available.
  • Tamago Teriyaki Burger 21:18
    • Description: Egg and chicken teriyaki burger.
    • Verdict: Looks cool with orange cheese; unique to Japan.

00:01 John Daub: Greetings everybody, welcome to Japanese fast food, or is this American fast food in Japan? This is McDonald's Japan, and of course all of you know that in Japan, McDonald's has a very Japanese menu with American food. It's unique. Many people say that McDonald's in Japan is even better than in the United States. You can see their menu right now, and they do have some pretty unique stuff, including egg on a burger. I believe the Texas burger is back, which I guess would be a Texas taste to it. What do they add, like bacon or something? It is really good. I had it about seven years ago.

00:37 John Daub: There it is right there. They still have the Samurai Mac burger, but I'm more interested in what's there on the right of the Samurai Mac burger. Oh, it's gone right now. That was their Pokemon monster. Pokemon menu items here, and a Twitter user had asked me to come here and try them. There it is right there. They have these milkshakes, they have these apple pies, and they have some sort of banana smoothie thing or a McFlurry.

01:05 John Daub: So, how are you doing? It is the rainy season, and I am prepared for a torrential downpour. Welcome to Tokyo, everybody. This McDonald's is quite busy, and they have outdoor service, so I thought this would be the best idea. I actually bought it all already. Here's my receipt. You can see it's in Japanese. This is Monzen-Nakacho. I had to wait for my number to be called, 116, and it was called. It cost me 510 yen, and here's the bag right here. And you can see McDonald's now has Pikachu on their stuff. Pikachu is wrapped inside to stay dry and warm, because it is kind of a chilly day for summer in Japan, but the rainy season is always like that.

01:55 John Daub: So, let's take our goodies bag of fast food, goodness, lovely sweets, and things that will make me really excited and energetic and go over to the corner where I always eat my stuff when I come in this direction. Matthew Norris, thank you! High five! Thank you, McDonald's Japan. Let's take our McDonald's over to the corner and eat it like it's street food, because that's cool. Can McDonald's be street food? I guess you could. Japan Pudding Bags. Bags and bags. That's the way to do it. As this bus keeps me company.

02:37 John Daub: All right, I'm going to put it right here. Oh, this is a bus stop. All right, hold on. As citizens get off. I'm going to put the camera here and then I'll be able to open the bag and you guys can see some stuff. This looks clean. The rain has cleaned it off. This is my table. Wow, everybody's getting off. The weather is lousy. Pokemon is not new to collaborations with fast food. Dude, just what was it like six months ago? I was here for some Pokemon donuts just across just around the bend there. There's a Mister Donut. We can go take a look at the menu after this. Oh, thanks a lot, bus for giving me the exhaust. I can smell it. It's exhausting. I set myself up for that one.

03:43 John Daub: All right, you're too high. Come down, come down. All right, there you go. Welcome. This also gives you a nice view of a nice view of the street. Welcome to Tokyo and a rainstorm. All right, let's try it. Let's unbox this bag of McDonald's here. I have my umbrella. I decided not to use the umbrella for now. It's not like a mist. It's not quite as bad. All right, we got the McDonald's straw. Of course, Japan puts a bag in a bag. As Nosh said, Nosh abroad has said astutely.

04:23 John Daub: Nothing was damaged. This is the milkshake. I love doing live streams in the rain. This is the Pikachu milkshake. I believe this is an orange flavor. Jody, I almost did drop it. Well, we're going to find this out right now. I'll put a link in the description so you can go to the website and check it out. The menu is in English, too. I believe these straws for McDonald's have not changed since the 1970s. Have they? It's the same. I am digging the Pokemon cup. This is almost worth just washing it out and saving it. The menu said Peach Calpis. I will be the judge of that.

05:28 John Daub: Carlos. Good call. The fact that you saw that in the advertisement does make a difference. This is really good. This is Peach milkshake. McDonald's is a good milkshake. I don't eat a lot of McDonald's, but on a hot day if I worked out and need the calories, I would go for this. This is a small size. I don't think the US makes a size this big. It was 120 yen for this. Reading is fundamental. Carlos. Bill Cosby taught me that among other things.

06:08 John Daub: Look at Pikachu. He's so happy right there. Whoa. This is how I am in normal life. Whoa. Is that for me spilling it? Or this is how it's supposed to be? This is, is this a straw? What is this thing? It's like square. I guess this is like a straw. What? That is pretty sweet. Oh, okay. Obviously we got bananas. This is a McFlurry. It's a spoon. But is it a spoon? It's a spoon.

07:05 John Daub: I don't even McDonald's that often. I thought it was a straw. It's hollow. I don't think in my entire life I've ever eaten anything McDonald's that required a spoon. Burgers, fries, apple pie, maybe soup. No ice cream. It was in a milkshake. Oh, that's not true. I did have them. The milk, the sundaes at McDonald's were good. They had strawberry caramel and chocolate back when I was a kid. But other than that, I used to wait for it to melt and would drink the sundaes from a straw anyways.

08:10 John Daub: All right. This is pretty good. I think for summer, this will keep you cool. But it's cool today anyways, thanks to the rainy season. So I'm not sure if I need this, but I was excited to come and try. So I'm very, very happy. This is a lot of sugar, so I'm not going to eat the whole thing. I'm going to save it for tomorrow, which means I'm probably going to throw it away. All right. Last but not least, we have look, I'm here for you. People asked me, would you go to McDonald's and try the new Pokemon menu, please? Someone asked me on Twitter.

08:55 John Daub: All right. I got a Twitter. It's onlyinjapanTV. I got like 8,000 followers. It's pretty weak. I don't use Twitter that much, but I started to use it a lot because the Olympics are coming. And if you want to get updates of what I'm doing during the Olympics time, go to Twitter, twitter.com slash onlyinjapanTV, one word.

10:04 John Daub: He waved at me. I got Pikachu colored backpack. You think he got that because he likes Pikachu? Um, can I, and I have not been vaccinated, but I'll talk about this at the end of the live stream. Let's get right into it. I came here for this. This is sugar. No, this is McDonald's. This is a, um, the collaboration with Pokemon. Let's see what the apple pie or is this an apple pie looks like. Whoa. Wait, this doesn't have Pikachu on it. What? Why doesn't this have a Pikachu on it? Didn't Carlos. Are you, do you still have the menu? Carlos? Why is this not have a Pikachu on it? This has like a retro looking thing here. Is it still cooked in animal lard? If it's retro, has to be cooked in animal lard. We all know that that's the best.

11:15 John Daub: Somebody tell me what happened. All right, let's just try this. Then I wanted the, there's a Pikachu pie. Yeah. Asked for the apple. This is apple pie. I want an apple custard pie. I bought the wrong one. All right. I got to take this back. I asked for the apple apple pie. They gave me apple custard wrong pie. If they gave me the wrong pie, I want to know. Yeah. I asked for the apple custard pie. This is the apple pie. What's up with that? This is pie gate. I got to take it back. I'm not going to eat both. I got, look, I got a stomach that's already too big. Why you eat apple when you can eat apple custard? I'm not happy. I'm going Karen mode. I demand respect.

12:46 John Daub: All right, let's go. Sorry. I just shook you up a lot. You know what? Why don't you just stay here? I'm going to go and ask. I don't want you hearing my Karen arguments here. Just stay here on the corner. Stay here. Look, Karen gets her way.

14:17 John Daub: I did not go Karen mode. I just, I was polite. I asked. Look, I was being polite. Tigra. Ha. Who wrote that? Tig. Could I? What does your husband do? Oh, he eats things. Yeah. You know what? So does, you know, Trevor and Ting on Food Ranger. He eats things. Okay. And he's doing pretty good with it. Like I watched his show all the time. John shorts and jacket combo is confusing. This is what it could be. What are you talking about? Is this no good? Nosh. I was a good Karen. I didn't look. See, this is why when things go wrong, be calm and collect it. And cool like a cucumber. This is why I didn't. I wanted just the package. I wanted to try the Pokemon stuff, right? Come on. You like the retro apple pie was cool. Do it the right way.

15:29 John Daub: All right, let's try this one. This is the Pikachu one. Now I could destroy the box and there's a place where I can open the pie up in the middle, but I'm going to go old school. I used to eat the pies like this. So this is a Pokemon apple custard pie. It does look. And Mark Wiens too, right? Right. Mark. Itadakimasu. This is so worth it. Look at the custard in there. I'm glad I complained. Very, very good. Just a nice balance between the custard and the apple. You see some of my slobber in there too. Probably. Sorry. It's not that it's kind of a cool shot with the Tokyo traffic going by in the background and the rain coming down a little bit and an apple pie right in your face.

16:34 John Daub: Here comes the bus collision course. Protect my pie. All right. So now I'm going to eat this as soon as the. Whoa. That was a big crow. You can see the sky is moving pretty quickly. It's the rainy season here. No thunder, though. It is a non-step bus. Oh, they closed it. It goes almost all the way to the ground. All right. There's the McDonald's I bought it from. Shout out to the customer service. They were pretty quick and I'm very thankful for that. For their quick substitution for the Pokemon pie.

18:02 John Daub: That's really good. My favorite is probably the pie because it's hot and it's a cool. It's a hot pie on a cool day. So it tastes good. The milkshake with peaches is definitely interesting. It's refreshing and the McFlurry was good, but I'm not a big fan of bananas, but I'm a big fan of buses. Another one. It's another non-step bus. It goes down even further. I believe. All right. What am I doing out here in the rain eating McDonald's for you? So thank you to the Twitter follower who recommended that I come and eat McDonald's on a rainy day to show you the Pokemon menu. There you go. There's three of them. The hot apple pie is 150 yen. So I asked them if I could pay the extra and they said no, just take the pie. They're quite busy there. So I'm going to take you one more time to say thank you to the staff there. Thank you.

19:16 John Daub: Raymond Centeno writes in here. Pokemon apple custard pie versus yesterday's choux cream. Choose one. Really? You want to go there? You want to compare a 500, like a $5 piece, like piece of cream puff with vanilla? Where were those vanilla beans from? Madagascar or something versus McDonald's apple pie custard deep fried in lard? Really? No, the choux cream for the winter. Come on. Joey's got it right. You got to go with the choux cream. However, with that said, McDonald's Japan's customer service is so good. It brings it very close to it based on the smile and the nice people that were there. I got to tell you, nice people make the food taste better. So based on that, big thank you. And that's tasted good. But yeah, it's no comparison. Tigra for something nutritious. All right, Tig, you got it. I'll buy. Can I some doughnuts on the way home? I'll get her something. I'll get her something good. Okay. I won't buy doughnuts. I won't buy doughnuts.

20:28 John Daub: All right. For the remainder of the live stream. And again, once more. Pikachu apple pie. Pikachu peach milkshake. Bus opening door. And Pikachu McFlurry with bananas. All of them pretty top notch stuff. If I have kids and I do that could eat solid food, which I don't, I would take Leo here once. All right. Because it's fun. It's fun.

21:18 John Daub: So one more time, I'm just going to show you the menu of McDonald's Japan. Click the thumbs up button if you like this kind of content in the rain. Encourage me to do more live streams because it's the rainy season and I need the encouragement because this stinks a little bit. It's not as much fun. So this is a live view of the menu of McDonald's Japan. There's the stuff that they have. Apple custard apple pie. Here's the spicy McNuggets that they have there right now, which are pretty cool. They have a super spicy sauces as well. I should get that for next time. Maybe. Oh, there it is. And then they have the banana milkshake. Banana McFlurry. It's a pretty good menu. And then they have the Samurai burgers. And I believe the Texas burger is back. That was one of my favorites ever. And then there's a burger here with egg on it. The Tamago Teriyaki burger. Egg and chicken teriyaki burger, which looks pretty cool. What is that cheese on there? It's like orange. Oh, it's spicy. Spicy teriyaki beef. Whoa, that looks really good. Yeah, the Texas burger made a comeback. This is the most popular item in the history of McDonald's Japan, I think. And I remember people lining up for a Texas burger. It had like a pieces of it was like a Big Mac. But they had a special a better a different special sauce and they had bacon in it. Like not a regular piece of bacon, like a thick sliced bacon. All right. That was really good. I don't eat a lot of McDonald's like almost never. But I ate that and I got more than one. It was good.

23:01 John Daub: Shout out to Chase. Chase in Georgia. Thank you, Chase. This is going in the not the Texas, but the Georgia. This is going to you, my friend. Thanks for joining the postcard club. It's from a rainy mailbox here in Monzen-Nakacho. Hey, Callen for food. Hello, John. Well, Pika Pika McD. Yeah, great to catch a live stream. Finally, here's something for Kadai and Leo. You got it. I'm going to bring back some something good. I'm actually going to ride my bike towards Ginza a little bit. And I'll probably bring back some healthier goody stuff from there.

23:46 John Daub: So there you go. This is the Mister Donut here. And Mister Donuts. What? They have pasta. Hold on a second. Mister Donuts is pasta. Bun bun G. So it's a cold pasta for summer. Look at that. This is a Tony. This is a soy milk pasta. What? And this is the chef. He looks pretty happy. I'm going to have to check. This is the Szechuan special. Is that Tom yum? Yeah, this is. Wow, this is like Sichuan down in China. So they got some pretty interesting food at Mister Donuts. So I'm going to have to try this donut shop pasta options. What? I know it's pretty sweet. It's pretty sweet. Oh, this is new. Hold on a second. All right. I didn't. So I parked my bike in this red zone. I guess they had a problem with people parking their bikes. It looks like pretty much you can't park your bike anywhere here. What? I parked my bike like right here. Nick, right here. So it looks like I shouldn't be doing it. According to the city regulation, parking management shall immediately remove bicycles. What? Oh, crud. I better get over there. Don't want to lose my bike.

25:22 John Daub: Hey, Sonny is in the house. Glad I caught the stream. Stay safe, everybody. Thank you. Great to see you here. Oh, that looks good, too. Katsudon with some soba. Oh, yeah. Katsudon set. How much is that? 690. That's cheap. All right. Let me get my bicycle. I'm kind of worried after seeing that. Dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun. That's right. I ate all the donuts, the food today. All right, everybody. Thank you so much for watching this live stream. Wow. They're reminding me not to park my bike here, too. They're very strict. Next episode, John recovers his bike from the bike parking lot. Oh, it's still there. Thank goodness. Well, there's other bikes. I'm not the only offender. There she is. All right. We're good.

26:49 John Daub: I do recommend this area. Monzen-Nakacho is a really nice area to come. Things are a little bit more laid back here. I've taken you to some of the alleys back here, which look like it's just stopped in time during the Showa era. And there's a very, very famous temple and shrine in this direction going back centuries. And this area, it's worth staying in this area, I think. It's a, what is it, like a 15-minute ride to Tokyo Station. So it's pretty close. By bicycle. And it's sort of near where I live, too. That's why I could come here by bicycle on a rainy day. So thanks, everybody, for the support. I hope to see you tomorrow in another livestream. I got some ideas. Wow. Check this out on the side of the McDonald's. They're saying, don't feed the pigeons. I guess McDonald's put this here. This is their employee-only door. And if they open it, I'm going to get smashed in the face. But look at that. Yamete kudasai. They said, don't feed the pigeons. That could be a crow, too. So the city of Tokyo says, this is Tokyo's logo right there. That's the city logo for Tokyo. It says, don't feed the pigeons. Pigeon food. Don't do it. And it tells you why. Wow. They got it in depth. And look at the pigeon dropping bombs on people. It's pretty funny. Look at the mess it caused because people were feeding the pigeons. Look what the pigeons did in response. That's nasty. Pigeons infested this guy's balcony and doodied all over it because humans fed up food. So the city of Tokyo wants you to stop feeding pigeons. Message received. I'm just passing along the message. That is one discerning pigeon.

28:46 John Daub: The rain is starting to really come down here. I'm doing this stuff because I know that you guys can't come to Japan. So I'm going to do a little bit more free stuff on things that you would want to do and eating at McDonald's. McDonald's Japan is one of the things that people want to do. Tomorrow's live stream. I haven't decided what I'm going to be doing, but I'm also editing a couple of videos for release this month. So stay tuned on the new main channel. And I'm going to Fukushima, Yamagata and some other places for a shoot with another, not another YouTuber, but for a company shoot up there. And I'm going to be taking you on Only in Japan Go. So you're taking the Shinkansen with me in 48 hours. Hold on. In 72 hours, we're going up to Tohoku again. So make sure you click that subscribe button and tell me what you think in the comments below. What should I see up in Tohoku? Do you even know where Tohoku is? Look, we're just having fun. When we're live, we can do this. In the playback, it might not be the same, but when we're live, it's like you're here with me in the rain, getting wet, falling apart now. Just listen to the rain come down. Bye, everybody. Stay dry because you're with me, right? Stay dry and I'll see you in the next live stream real soon.
