# Driving Tokyo's Wangan-dori to Costco Japan

## Overview

On Marine Day (海の日, Umi no Hi) 2021, John Daub invites his friend Peter von Gomm on a road trip from their homes to Costco in Makuhari, Chiba Prefecture. The video captures a relaxed, conversational drive along Tokyo's Wangan-dori waterfront expressway, showcasing the unique experience of driving in suburban Tokyo and the Chiba coast area. The two friends discuss pandemic life, weight gain ("the COVID 15"), and share laughs over navigating Japanese parking structures. John highlights the dramatic urban development in Makuhari, including the recently opened Aeon Mall, while Peter promotes his Serial Talker true crime podcast. The trip culminates at Costco's rooftop parking, which offers panoramic views of Tokyo Bay, Marine Stadium, and Makuhari Messe. The video provides a candid look at everyday life in Japan during the 2020 Olympics period, including the government's decision to shift the Marine Day holiday for the Olympics.

## Japan Travel Tips

- **Getting There:** Costco Makuhari is accessible by car via Wangan-dori (湾岸通り), the waterfront expressway running along Tokyo Bay through Chiba. It's also reachable by train to Makuhari Station on the JR Keiyo Line.
- **Best Time to Visit:** Weekday mornings right at opening to avoid crowds. The rooftop parking offers great views of Tokyo Bay and Marine Stadium.
- **Costco Japan Nuances:** Portion sizes at Costco Japan are smaller than American counterparts, but still considered large by Japanese standards. New members often look "freaked out" walking around. Membership cards include your photo.
- **What to Buy:** Costco Japan carries items not found in regular Japanese supermarkets — bulk pickle jars, imported snacks, and American-style bulk goods. Bring your own bags or buy them there.
- **Parking:** Many Japanese drivers back into parking spaces. If you front-park, you have easier trunk access for loading groceries.
- **Car Rental:** All rental cars in Japan are automatic except in Hokkaido (where manual is standard).
- **ETC Cards:** Electronic toll collection makes expressway travel convenient — watch the gate open automatically.

## Japanese Language & Culture Notes

- **Marine Day (海の日, Umi no Hi):** A national holiday celebrated on the third Monday of July, honoring the ocean and maritime activities. In 2021, the government moved it to Thursday to create a four-day weekend for the Tokyo Olympics opening ceremony.
- **Wangan-dori (湾岸通り):** The "waterfront road" running along Tokyo Bay, connecting Tokyo with Chiba Prefecture. A major expressway with views of the bay and container ports.
- **COVID-15 (COVID 15):** Peter's humorous term for pandemic weight gain, playing on the American concept of the "Freshman 15" but referring to 15 kilograms (about 33 pounds) gained during COVID lockdowns.
- **Japanese Parking Culture:** Backing into parking spaces is common practice in Japan, allowing for quicker exits. John questions this convention since it complicates trunk access when loading heavy items.
- **Convenience Store Coffee:** Family Mart and other konbini offer quality coffee for around 100-137 yen. The butter coffee at 187 yen includes MCT oil and grass-fed butter from Hokkaido.
- **Makuhari Development:** Once sparse marshland, Makuhari emerged as a planned city with the 1990s development of Makuhari Messe and continues to grow with new shopping centers like Aeon Mall.

## Food & Drink Guide

- **Butter Coffee (バターコーヒー)** — Family Mart, 187 yen
Grass-fed butter and MCT oil blended into coffee. Peter describes it as a diet remedy with only 66 calories and 0.4g protein. The cows are from Hokkaido. John notes it "sounds good" despite seeming unhealthy.

- **Family Mart Iced Coffee** — Family Mart, 100-137 yen
A staple convenience store coffee. John mentions the price went up from 100 yen. Peter and John both enjoyed their drinks.

- **Costco Bulk Items** (not purchased on camera but discussed)
  - Large pickle jars (look like "glass barrels")
  - Jalapenos in large jars
  - Pumpkin seeds (bags are measured in kilograms, larger than American portions)
  - Razors (sold in packs of 30)
  - Costco sushi platters

## People

- **John Daub** — Host and driver. Discusses his pandemic lifestyle changes, admits to gaining weight and stopping gym visits. Has a business Costco membership. Shares views on Japanese culture and urban development.

- **Peter von Gomm** — John's longtime friend and frequent collaborator. Promotes his Serial Talker true crime podcast. Tries butter coffee and provides humorous commentary throughout the drive. Takes over driving at Costco parking lot.

## Key Takeaways

1. **Makuhari is rapidly developing** — The Aeon Mall appeared only five years ago, transforming the area from sparse land to a bustling commercial zone with high-rise buildings.

2. **Pandemic life affected everyone** — Both John and Peter discuss their pandemic weight gain and gym closures, noting that many Japanese people also gained weight during lockdowns.

3. **Costco Japan is unique** — Smaller portions than American Costco but still larger than typical Japanese shopping habits. First-timers often look overwhelmed by the bulk sizes.

4. **Marine Day significance** — 2021 was unusual with the government shifting the holiday for the Olympics, creating a rare four-day weekend.

5. **Social distancing in practice** — Despite the COVID state of emergency, Costco was busy, demonstrating that shopping is considered an essential activity in Japan.

00:00:02 John Daub: We on the road on the road again, that's right.

00:00:08 Peter von Gomm: Johnny just couldn't wait to get on the road again.

00:00:12 John Daub: Yeah, actually I could. We did months. How you doing, everybody?

00:00:18 Peter von Gomm: Hey, guys. Top of the morning to you from a hot and sunny Tokyo.

00:00:25 John Daub: That's right.

00:00:25 Peter von Gomm: The car was super hot until John finally agreed to let me turn on the air conditioning.

00:00:30 John Daub: I think it's better to have the windows open and feel the air. Although it might feel like a convection oven. But it does feel good.

00:00:38 Peter von Gomm: It does. It does feel good having the wind in your hair.

00:00:44 John Daub: Hey, now we are on the road to Costco, but we wanted to talk a little bit in this live stream. Not just about the Olympic venues that we passed, including Disneyland, which is not a venue. It should be.

00:00:56 Peter von Gomm: That would be great.

00:00:56 John Daub: It would be pretty cool.

00:00:58 Peter von Gomm: I trained for that.

00:00:59 John Daub: Really? How do you train for that?

00:01:05 Peter von Gomm: Swinging. See, you can toss Mickey the furthest by swinging by the ears.

00:01:09 John Daub: I like that. Mickey Mouse pillow fight. I like that. Yeah. So what we did — we are in Chiba right now, we're driving to Costco. And Peter and I were just commenting on each other's physiques.

00:01:21 Peter von Gomm: Yeah. Thankfully you can't pan this down.

00:01:30 John Daub: You can't come down. We have both gained an extraordinary amount of weight.

00:01:36 Peter von Gomm: Well, who's this? You got a Mickey Mouse in your pocket?

00:01:40 John Daub: I think if we did a scale check from before and after, you might see.

00:01:45 Peter von Gomm: I just got a little softer around the belly and muscle mass I've lost because I just stopped going to the gym.

00:01:53 John Daub: Yeah, I stopped going to the gym as well. And I started eating more because it was something to do.

00:02:20 John Daub: You know, it's — Japan is a country where you think everyone is really thin. But I gotta tell you, the last year and a half hasn't been so thin in this country. I've seen a lot of other roly-poly people. I mean that in an affectionate way. Just people that have a little pandemic belly.

00:02:37 Peter von Gomm: They call it the... the COVID 15.

00:02:40 John Daub: They do not.

00:02:40 Peter von Gomm: They do. I do. That's what you call it?

00:02:43 John Daub: No. Who is "they"?

00:02:44 Peter von Gomm: People in the know. Not this guy.

00:02:52 John Daub: 15 kg! I know. They don't use pounds here. That's it. That's how I caught you. It's kilograms in Japan.

00:02:59 Peter von Gomm: I know, but that means — that's like 30 some pounds, right? 35 pounds. That's a lot of weight.

00:03:05 John Daub: I just — I caught you so bad in the —

00:03:18 Peter von Gomm: Listen, you just keep your eyes on the road and your mouth shut.

00:03:21 John Daub: Okay, I'll keep my mouth on the road. Although that's not gonna be good for my dentist.

00:03:48 John Daub: That's a good question. In order to pay off this car, we are live streaming. No, this is not what we're doing. We want to share with you the experience. So I don't know what we're going to do. We're gonna go to Costco. I got to pick up some stuff because I don't know if we can get another chance to go there. And I don't know how you're going to take your stuff back. You came on my bike.

00:04:07 Peter von Gomm: I'm basically along for the ride because I showed you a picture of my cupboards.

00:04:11 John Daub: Yes.

00:04:11 Peter von Gomm: And they are jam-packed.

00:04:13 John Daub: They are.

00:04:14 Peter von Gomm: And you got a good point. A lot of that stuff is probably expired, and I need to go through there and just start checking things. But I think I could be persuaded into getting maybe a big bag of, I don't know, pumpkin seeds or something.

00:04:35 John Daub: Stop it with your diet foods.

00:04:36 Peter von Gomm: Well, I'm watching your weight.

00:04:38 John Daub: Okay, as long as you give me half. Because these pumpkin seeds — they're not in pounds, Peter. They're in kilograms. So the bags are bigger. That's how it works.

00:04:46 Peter von Gomm: 15.

00:04:47 John Daub: 15 kilos, something like that. I said, I'm gonna get one of those big pickle jars too, because they're kind of cool to look at.

00:04:53 Peter von Gomm: Yeah, they look like a glass barrel.

00:04:56 John Daub: It's sort of like that. They're pretty big. They got big jars of jalapenos that — that would get — but you don't have to open it. It just looks like a brain in a jar. You know, you're collecting it. I just collected a bunch of uncut jalapenos. But, you know, Costco in Japan — the items probably aren't as big as in the United States, but they do have a lot of the things that aren't in other stores. And that makes it really — also makes it very dangerous because the portion size at Costco — Japanese are still not used to it. They — they — I get a little — you could tell the new signups because they're freaked out, walking around like a museum of horror because they don't have a space for it.

00:05:35 Peter von Gomm: What I end up doing — actually, the last time we went to Costco together, I —

00:05:40 John Daub: It was when Mike was here. Yeah, Mikey was here.

00:05:45 Peter von Gomm: Jackie Chan. I got a bag of something. I don't remember what it was, but I couldn't — I couldn't eat all of it. So I gave it out to my neighbors. And it was great. They were all really appreciative. And yeah, it was a good thing. It's just the portions are way too big and our storage facilities in our Japanese kitchens, very limited. Yeah, it's very limited. So you gotta shop wisely and look for smaller.

00:06:18 John Daub: Speaking of shop, we're not passing LaLaport, which is Minami Funabashi, which you can't really see on the left and the right. You can't really notice it.

00:06:28 Peter von Gomm: Maybe swing it.

00:06:29 John Daub: That's all right. It's okay. It's gone. Easy come, easy go. Yeah, but this should be a fun trip. And like — I — I don't know, what do you normally buy at Costco? And what are you gonna do to try to get rid of your — your COVID 15, which is some made-up word that you just tried to say that I don't know about because I'm ig—

00:06:53 Peter von Gomm: Well, maybe a razor.

00:06:57 John Daub: Oh, really? Oh, for shaving. Okay. Yeah, I can't eat that. But you can't get one. You have to get 30.

00:07:04 Peter von Gomm: I'll give them out to my neighbors.

00:07:08 John Daub: Okay.

00:07:08 Peter von Gomm: Do you ever shave?

00:07:09 John Daub: I do. Once every two, three days. Yeah.

00:07:12 Peter von Gomm: Okay. Okay. I've never seen you with, like, a beard or I've actually got stubble now.

00:07:16 John Daub: Do I?

00:07:18 Peter von Gomm: Do you use an electric or a handheld type? A little manual thing?

00:07:24 John Daub: Manual.

00:07:25 Peter von Gomm: Okay.

00:07:26 John Daub: I like to cut myself.

00:07:33 Peter von Gomm: Yeah, there's a toll gate ahead. There's a toll gate ahead.

00:07:37 John Daub: Oh, you can show them — the Easy Pass here.

00:07:41 Peter von Gomm: All right, here we go. You got your ETC card in.

00:07:43 John Daub: I do. Good.

00:07:46 Peter von Gomm: Now watch this gate pop up.

00:07:47 John Daub: Gate crasher.

00:07:50 Peter von Gomm: And open sesame. Thank you, sir.

00:07:54 John Daub: It's a little shaky. Shaky because iPhone does not have stabilization on. Slightly left.

00:08:08 Peter von Gomm: Yeah, Mary Poppins is giving great directions this morning. Proceed about 2km, turn right.

00:08:08 John Daub: Proceed about 2km, turn right. After 2km to right. I hope she tells me again. Navigate. I don't even need — you know what? I know how to get there without the navigation. But with the navigation, I get confused. All right? I do. I do a blind — a dead spot check. Although the mirrors are adequate, I stopped at —

00:08:33 Peter von Gomm: At Family Mart. Excuse me. This morning for —

00:08:37 John Daub: You're blocking the shot for our coffees, John.

00:08:38 Peter von Gomm: You haven't tried yours yet. It's really good.

00:08:39 John Daub: That's right. Yeah.

00:08:39 Peter von Gomm: These convenience stores are amazing in Japan. And I'm blown away every time I go in there because there's always something new. This is 100. It's a small size. 137 yen. Like a buck 25 or something.

00:08:53 John Daub: Oh, price went up. Used to be 100 yen spot. Yeah, right. Yeah, I thought so.

00:08:58 Peter von Gomm: Yeah, there was 100 yen before, but it's — it's really good. And try it. It's cooled off enough. And I also got a little secret. Or not secret, but I'm gonna show you. This was what really blew me away.

00:09:11 John Daub: Ah, that is good.

00:09:12 Peter von Gomm: Look at this. You've heard of butter coffee, right?

00:09:15 John Daub: Yeah. What?

00:09:16 Peter von Gomm: Grass fed coffee. Look at that.

00:09:18 John Daub: That's pretty cool.

00:09:19 Peter von Gomm: Yeah. So this was — hang on a second. Somebody just chatted you. Spike.

00:09:26 John Daub: Hey, Spike. This is manual. They're all automatic in Japan. You can't get a rental car that's manual except up in Hokkaido, I heard. Oh, really? I would prefer to have a manual because that's what my license is. I have a manual license.

00:09:47 Peter von Gomm: So this is a butter coffee. Grass-fed cows.

00:09:49 John Daub: Where are the cows from?

00:09:53 Peter von Gomm: Hokkaido. Maybe in 700 meters.

00:09:54 John Daub: See, that's suspicious.

00:09:54 Peter von Gomm: It's got MCT oil in it. And grass-fed butter.

00:09:58 John Daub: Speaking of grass, we're passing a lot of it on the right side here.

00:10:02 Peter von Gomm: So this is actually a diet remedy, this butter coffee.

00:10:08 John Daub: Seriously, it's healthier because you think that the butter would be the opposite of healthy. Just eating — drinking butter with coffee. That sounds good.

00:10:16 Peter von Gomm: Yeah. But there are some — there's some health benefits to it. And there's a butter coffee shop selling outside of Yoyogi Station. There's actually a coffee stand that's butter coffee.

00:10:29 John Daub: Now this lives. Oh, go ahead. Sorry to cut you off.

00:10:31 Peter von Gomm: That's right. That's not the first time you've done that.

00:10:33 John Daub: It's true.

00:10:35 Peter von Gomm: So yeah, butter coffee. Check it out. This is 187 yen at Family Mart.

00:10:40 John Daub: How many calories in it? Because this is titled Fat in Japan. Right?

00:10:45 Peter von Gomm: It's gotta be only 66 calories. Is that — right lane to turn right from there for me? In 300 meters, turn left. Yeah. The protein is nominal, 0.4 grams, but yeah, only 66 calories.

00:11:10 John Daub: Okay.

00:11:10 Peter von Gomm: Not too shabby.

00:11:21 John Daub: Thank you. Thank you. Okay, I read that. Thank you. If I can read your message here — how was the podcast coming along?

00:11:24 Peter von Gomm: Oh, any plans on Serial Talker?

00:11:31 John Daub: Heinous Crimes around the World Yesterday.

00:11:33 Peter von Gomm: Yesterday. It's about a drummer. Actually, you know what?

00:11:40 John Daub: You know what I'm gonna do?

00:11:40 Peter von Gomm: I am going to read you the opening of the podcast. Can I do that?

00:11:45 John Daub: You can if you want to.

00:11:46 Peter von Gomm: So my — my podcast is called the Serial Talker Podcast and it's a true crime genre and I do it weekly and would love for you to check it out. It's anywhere you can get your podcasts. I also have a YouTube version of it. So if I can find my glasses.

00:12:25 John Daub: We should do a podcast take on the — the Trash. The Trash Taste kingpins over there. And they're doing a pretty good job too. A lot of anime.

00:12:28 Peter von Gomm: A little bit. A little bit. Okay. So this — this latest podcast is called Killer Drummer and it's a tragic story of a grand Grammy-winning murderer. We're going to turn back the clock and take a look at the enviable and extraordinarily turned horrific and tragic life of one of the world's most sought-to-be rock drummers. Jim Gordon was a beast on the skins. He kept time with the biggest names in the music industry. Everybody wanted him on the record. She wanted him to kill her. The voices. Her voice told him so. It was her voice that helped him pick out the 8-inch butcher's knife and had him sharpen it. Her voice explained in detail how to use the word whetstone to make the blade razor sharp. And he would do what the voices told him to do because he always listened to them even though they had ruined his life.

00:13:26 John Daub: My God, Peter. It's like the podcast is usually on the speaker. It's right next to me. On the left side there's a Kona Coffee pancake shop. What — Hawaii is representing big time. We're almost there. It's a strip mall. This is here.

00:13:43 Peter von Gomm: Should I swing it and show them?

00:13:44 John Daub: No, no, it's all right. Just leave it in there. Yeah. You know, this has changed a lot over the last couple of years because of the Aeon Mall that came in here. Kona Coffee, pancakes. What?

00:13:56 Peter von Gomm: Welcome to Chiba.

00:13:56 John Daub: Yeah, there used to be a couple other department stores that went out, and they revamped it into something else that might do better. The Costco has been — this is the first Costco in Japan that we're going to. This is Makuhari and Chiba. You see that? There's some, like, palm trees lining the streets. It's very tropical out here. This is also where Makuhari Messe is, and —

00:14:16 Peter von Gomm: Yeah, look at those palm trees. I've got one of these at our house. Yeah, it's pretty warm.

00:14:23 John Daub: Oh, I can see the Aeon Mall. Beyond the Aeon Mall is the Costco. So we're nearly there. I — you know, so by the way, Serial Talker is available on iTunes and also on YouTube. You're trying to get — do you have a thousand subscribers on the YouTube yet?

00:14:39 Peter von Gomm: Pretty close. Yeah, I do that. The podcast is turned into a video version. I upload that every Friday. And then the new — the new podcast for Apple podcasts and Spotify, blah, blah, blah, is on every Sunday.

00:14:53 John Daub: Yeah, it's one of those shows that you can just sit back and listen to. I like it on iTunes, and I can put it on the speaker and listen to it in the car. 'Cause we all like heinous crimes. And you say they're not all heinous —

00:15:06 Peter von Gomm: But I think they are. They aren't. They aren't. Aren't.

00:15:08 John Daub: But I don't even know what it means. I just like to say it. There's something satisfying about saying heinous crime.

00:15:14 Peter von Gomm: Well, I just —

00:15:22 John Daub: I don't know either. It's all good. Well, we're back, and I'm — I'm gonna be pulling into the Costco in a second here.

00:15:37 Peter von Gomm: Yeah, it's been a nice, nice trip out here. It's very — it is. It's not that long of a trip.

00:15:45 John Daub: I wish we could have parked there, but I'm gonna try to go to the roof of Costco, which is cool.

00:15:50 Peter von Gomm: Can you get in a shaded area?

00:15:53 John Daub: No. Why? I've been indoors all the time. Oh, man, I hate this.

00:16:01 Peter von Gomm: What?

00:16:02 John Daub: Check it out. You have to stop on the — on like a 45-degree incline. It feels like 45 degrees.

00:16:10 Peter von Gomm: This is when I don't want a stick shift.

00:16:13 John Daub: Yeah. I don't know if this car can make it up.

00:16:19 Peter von Gomm: We're going to bottom out here. That is a steep incline. Look at that. Yeah, this would be awesome with, like, snowboarding going the opposite direction.

00:16:32 John Daub: Yeah. This would be great for video games, like driving, but I wouldn't — oh, look at all these people. What the heck? What? Honestly, people stay at home. It's a state of emergency.

00:16:44 Peter von Gomm: All right, well, you gotta stock up for state of emergencies. It's true.

00:16:48 John Daub: Shopping is an essential service. It is essential, but —

00:16:51 Peter von Gomm: Yeah, I mean, what time is it? It's only 10:15.

00:16:53 John Daub: It just opened. What? These people here — crazy. We're going to the roof.

00:16:59 Peter von Gomm: Take us to the roof, John. Is there a shortcut?

00:17:01 John Daub: No, there isn't. It's coming down is hard because you got to go around the entire parking lot in order to get to the exit. We got some openings here, but I don't want to — oh, Japanese love to back in.

00:17:15 Peter von Gomm: They always back in.

00:17:16 John Daub: I go front first because — how do you get your stuff into your trunk if you're — if you're backed in? If you're like this, how do you get the stuff into your trunk? Right? I don't know.

00:17:27 Peter von Gomm: Why don't you just go here? Why do you want to — the roof?

00:17:28 John Daub: Because that's —

00:17:31 Peter von Gomm: That's where the sun is going to be blasting the car. Like we're going to —

00:17:32 John Daub: It's a white car.

00:17:35 Peter von Gomm: You should have brought my kayak. And we could use it as a kiln.

00:17:35 John Daub: I think there's an overhang, a slight overhang on the roof. But they might have — they might have closed off the roof sometimes. Look at this. We got Peter turning. Look at this, dudes. Yes.

00:17:52 Peter von Gomm: Cookies. Cookies you can have. Just burn them off.

00:17:53 John Daub: You can do whatever you want, right?

00:17:57 Peter von Gomm: Shoot a scene for, like, a crime show.

00:17:59 John Daub: Oh, they blocked the roof.

00:18:04 Peter von Gomm: Oh, so — like, best thing that's happened so far today.

00:18:04 John Daub: Yeah, we could totally do a Tokyo Drift here. All right, you know what I'm gonna do? I'm gonna come right —

00:18:14 Peter von Gomm: I want you to back in because do as the others.

00:18:14 John Daub: No, just check this out. You can see Marine Stadium. All right. All right. You know what? I'll turn it back in now. If you do any funny business — they do have security cameras, so don't worry.

00:18:32 Peter von Gomm: Are you not happy with those other 500 spaces?

00:18:34 John Daub: No, I have a particular spot I don't want to back. Look, if you back in, how do you get the stuff into the trunk?

00:18:42 Peter von Gomm: How about this one right here?

00:18:44 John Daub: All right.

00:18:46 Peter von Gomm: You already got enough junk in your trunk.

00:18:49 John Daub: Hey. All right. There you go. Oh, my headlights are on. How convenient.

00:18:55 Peter von Gomm: I think they're automatic.

00:18:56 John Daub: Are they? Not anymore. Oh, how do I —

00:19:06 Peter von Gomm: Yeah, it's like — where's the key? Do you have the key?

00:19:09 John Daub: Yeah, right here.

00:19:11 Peter von Gomm: Okay. Make sure you don't forget that.

00:19:11 John Daub: Yeah. Now I can actually look at the screen. How you doing, everybody? I can sort of look at the screen here. There's —

00:19:22 Peter von Gomm: Did you try the coffee? It's really tasty.

00:19:22 John Daub: I did. Shane is here. Shane has just bought our lunch. Shane, does that mean you want us to get some fish for you? You from Costco and try some fish? Because Shane doesn't like any fish products.

00:19:36 Peter von Gomm: Let's — let's not.

00:19:36 John Daub: I — I don't know if we're gonna do a live stream. We've already done the — eat the big — eat the big bowl — eat the big — the sushi tray. Right. Although it was — was not our best work. Right.

00:19:53 Peter von Gomm: Chan's in the trunk.

00:19:53 John Daub: John, I'm in the trunk. Can I come out? That's not true. You want to check the trunk? I don't know. What — what — the Toyota rent-a-car people did. All right, we're going to check the trunk out because —

00:20:04 Peter von Gomm: How about you put that car in park?

00:20:07 John Daub: Yeah, okay. You know what?

00:20:11 Peter von Gomm: Yeah, I know what.

00:20:11 John Daub: Do you want to drive back?

00:20:12 Peter von Gomm: I think so.

00:20:13 John Daub: Seriously?

00:20:15 Peter von Gomm: Yeah, I'll drive.

00:20:15 John Daub: All right, now we're getting ready to rob the place. No one's going to — that's our quarantine.

00:20:25 Peter von Gomm: That's right. We bad.

00:20:27 John Daub: Wait a second. I turned everything off, right?

00:20:29 Peter von Gomm: How come you have the lights turned on still? That's why it's beeping.

00:20:36 John Daub: How do I turn the lights off?

00:20:38 Peter von Gomm: Peter, you turn your light switch off.

00:20:41 John Daub: Where? Right, right.

00:20:42 Peter von Gomm: The handle.

00:20:43 John Daub: There.

00:20:43 Peter von Gomm: Right there? Yeah. No, no, no.

00:20:45 John Daub: Twist it. Twist it. There you go.

00:20:48 Peter von Gomm: No, the other way. The other way.

00:20:52 John Daub: Huh? See, I told you it wasn't me. It's you.

00:20:55 Peter von Gomm: I'm not in the car.

00:20:55 John Daub: Make it stop.

00:21:00 Peter von Gomm: I'm gonna go find out. Chan's in the trunk. Hang on.

00:21:03 John Daub: Make it stop.

00:21:08 Peter von Gomm: Oh, my God. There's a guy back here in the truck.

00:21:15 John Daub: John, it's off. I turned it off.

00:21:22 Peter von Gomm: All right, dude.

00:21:22 John Daub: All right. Okay, wait. Okay, we should be good.

00:21:26 Peter von Gomm: Wait, the doors — because the door is open and your key is maybe —

00:21:31 John Daub: You know what? Listen, car, you just open your door, please.

00:21:39 Peter von Gomm: It's getting hot in here. Lights off. But it says it's on auto. Hang on, hang on. That's weird.

00:21:50 John Daub: Wait, if it's an auto —

00:21:46 Peter von Gomm: It'll — it should turn off automatically.

00:21:47 John Daub: You sure?

00:21:50 Peter von Gomm: Yeah, let's go find out. Here, grab your coffee.

00:22:02 Peter von Gomm: A little earlier when we put the phone in the holder, the emergency thing went off and John flipped out.

00:22:24 John Daub: That was slick.

00:22:27 John Daub: All right. Welcome back. Okay, you know what? Listen, just get out of the car. It'll — maybe it's trying to —

00:22:33 Peter von Gomm: It's like a tree falls in the forest.

00:22:33 John Daub: It stopped. That was the — it seriously heard the tree falls. All right. We're social distancing from the rest of the planet as the zombie apocalypse has cleared out the entire parking lot. Crazy. Yeah, I know. I can't figure it out. The lights are on. Do they though? I don't trust that reasoning. Look, I —

00:23:06 Peter von Gomm: Got your key in your pocket right now.

00:23:13 John Daub: It's really beeping now. It's just constant.

00:23:13 Peter von Gomm: Turn off is probably — the door is open. Can you check your door? Check your door. Chan, did you — did you check to see if Chan was in here?

00:23:30 John Daub: No, he's not in here. No, the light is on here. Okay, here, let me close this again. Is the light still on? Yeah, it's still on. Or is it — is this reflected?

00:23:48 Peter von Gomm: No, I can see it's — it's on. Let's — hang on.

00:24:39 John Daub: Hey, Amy's here. Amy said — okay, you did it — turned off. You know what? These Toyotas are hard. All right, check it out. Here we got the ocean view. I wanted to come up here because it's social distancing and it's a safety — then who's in — then whose trunk am I in here? Wait, you're not in the — there. So who's tricking my — I — I can't help you out with that. That was pretty funny. All right, welcome. Happy Marine Day to everybody. I'm putting you outside the window. That's the Pacific Ocean from Makuhari. Very cool. Yeah, it's nice air.

00:24:41 Peter von Gomm: It's nice to see the ocean.

00:24:45 John Daub: Yeah. Over on this side, you can see a marine stadium — for Marine Day. That's the Chiba — it looks like the old Veterans Stadium in a way. This is them — where the Chiba Marines play, a baseball team for the Japan League. You get a nice view from up here. And then that's Makuhari Messe right there on the — lots of events in there. That's where Tokyo Game Show is held. Right in there. Right now it's — nothing — for years has been held in there. But we do have pretty cool weather. Another reason to get in your car and just kind of drive a little bit. Yeah, some pigeon poo as well, but beautiful day.

00:25:26 Peter von Gomm: Well, this is a — this might be a drive — is it a driving school? What is this down here? Oh, no, that's the entrance for the — oh, look at — okay, this is all the parking lot from Makuhari.

00:25:35 John Daub: Yeah. Why did Nightbot take out Tipper 1941? That's — said Chan is a riot. And then Nightbot took them out. I guess riot is not — sorry. Sorry Tipper. Nightbot totally took him — took you out for that. This is also — Makuhari is pretty interesting because — I don't know, it's like this — this city that came up in the middle of nowhere, right. It's like, why all these skyscrapers here? It's not like the land is so expensive out here. Here. And that one on the right side is an APA Hotel, I believe, or some sort of resort. They're not doing too well right now, but I'd say about five years ago there wasn't anything here. This Aeon Mall was not here. And now it's here. That's sort of cool. All right. Are you ready, sir?

00:26:43 Peter von Gomm: Why are you like showing my gut?

00:26:45 John Daub: I'm showing mine too.

00:26:48 Peter von Gomm: No, I think I'm gonna look for some healthy foods. Like I said. Seeds.

00:26:53 John Daub: Okay.

00:26:53 Peter von Gomm: And maybe brownie mix or something.

00:26:56 John Daub: I get my seeds from Takeya in Okachimachi. It's a little bit cheaper there.

00:27:01 Peter von Gomm: Takeya?

00:27:02 John Daub: Yeah, the purple department store.

00:27:03 Peter von Gomm: Oh —

00:27:11 John Daub: How did — hey, what bird did this? Is that a bird?

00:27:13 Peter von Gomm: No, I think it's the insulation.

00:27:14 John Daub: Those look like bat droppings.

00:27:16 Peter von Gomm: It's the insulation up above.

00:27:21 John Daub: Insulation or bats. I don't — seriously could be anything. Danny writes in here, don't spend too much money. It's impossible. Danny, where cost go we — you have to drop at least $200.

00:27:40 Peter von Gomm: I bet this guy's going to back in.

00:27:40 John Daub: No, they're not. If you're smart, you don't go back in because how do you get — why would you back in — how do you get your Japanese back in? And then they go, wait, I should have — yeah, we gotta get one of these big shopping carts.

00:27:54 Peter von Gomm: I will just use your shopping cart because I want to avoid any temptation.

00:28:00 John Daub: Okay. Did you bring your membership card? Oh, you didn't? Oh, I'm a member.

00:28:07 Peter von Gomm: I just came for the ride. And I could get in on your card, right?

00:28:09 John Daub: That's true. Two for the price of one.

00:28:16 John Daub: Oh, that's true. That the Costco people — can I show them my picture? Why not?

00:28:22 Peter von Gomm: Is your member number on there? Somebody might —

00:28:24 John Daub: All right, here's the one — except I'm a business member here and —

00:28:33 John Daub: and the barcode. There's my picture. They did — they allowed me to do — yeah, I — they said, what can I do? And they said, smile. And that was my smile at the time. Things have changed since then. But it was a tough — it was a tough year. All right, I think that they — they — they wipe this down too, for — all right, so that's about it. We have to keep a distance from everybody here. Yeah, I got my mask on. All right, everybody. So we'll be back in another live stream to kind of show you maybe what we bought with food. But I'm — I'm hoping — all right, I think that this is Marine Day for me because the third — third Monday in — in July is always Marine Day. It's a holiday. But the government of Japan moved it to Thursday because of the Olympics.

00:29:34 Peter von Gomm: Well, and it'll be — it'll be a four-day holiday. Holiday. It'll be Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Saturday, Sunday.

00:29:39 John Daub: Yeah, four-day holiday.

00:29:40 Peter von Gomm: Sports Day is Friday, which is the opening ceremony for the Olympics.

00:29:43 John Daub: Right. So the government made a four-day holiday instead of a three-day holiday. But for me, today, I like — it's Marine Day.

00:29:50 Peter von Gomm: So it's John's Marine Day today.

00:29:52 John Daub: That's right. So we're gonna go to Makuhari Beach, check it out.

00:29:55 Peter von Gomm: Maybe you can buy like a little — some water wings or something.

00:29:58 John Daub: We could do that. Maybe take a beach together. Well, hey, that's not a date. So we'll go check out Makuhari Beach and do a live stream there as well. Because I think it'd be pretty cool to check it out. And Marine Day also — we want to celebrate the Marines who work really hard. They're the first ones in the battle. And we appreciate everything that the Marines do because I think if you don't speak any Japanese, you come to Japan, I'm sure — and you're a Marine. You probably celebrate this day.

00:30:27 Peter von Gomm: Whatever you say, John.

00:30:29 John Daub: Whatever you say.

00:30:30 Peter von Gomm: Let's go, Marine.

00:30:35 John Daub: Or — or it's the day of Aquaman and — and Neptune and — and everybody who has —

00:30:37 Peter von Gomm: Let's go now and get some food.

00:30:39 John Daub: Let's go now and get some food.

00:30:42 Peter von Gomm: You are a crazy dude.

00:30:42 John Daub: You are a crazy dude. Oh. Mask on. Mask on.

00:30:50 John Daub: All right, everybody. See you later. We gotta do some shopping, and we'll probably —

00:30:54 Peter von Gomm: John and I are gonna be doing something later this week from outside the Olympic Stadium.

00:30:57 John Daub: Are we gonna do that?

00:30:58 Peter von Gomm: Yeah. Yeah. Hey, Amy.

00:31:02 John Daub: All right, see everybody. Have a good day. See you in a little bit.

00:31:05 Peter von Gomm: See you guys.
