Japanese Beach Summer View Makuhari Chiba
Japanese Beach Summer View Makuhari Chiba
Overview
In this casual livestream episode, John Daub takes viewers to Makuhari Inage Beach in Chiba Prefecture, just outside Tokyo. Accompanied by his friend Peter von Gomm, John explores the shoreline just days before the opening of the Tokyo 2020/2021 Olympics. The video offers a realistic look at a Tokyo-area beach during summer, discussing water quality, sand conditions, and the Olympic surfing and triathlon venues.
The pair engage in lighthearted banter while testing the water temperature and interacting with livestream comments. John provides context on why certain Olympic events were moved from Odaiba to other locations due to pollution concerns. While acknowledging that Chiba's beaches aren't quite Rio de Janeiro, he highlights the accessibility and warmth of the water, making it a viable option for locals looking to escape the city heat.
This video serves as a time capsule of the summer of 2021 in Japan, capturing the atmosphere leading up to the delayed Olympics. It also provides practical comparisons for travelers wondering where to find decent beaches near Tokyo, with recommendations for spots in Kanagawa like Zushi and Kamakura.

Japan Travel Tips
- Location: Makuhari Inage Beach is accessible from Tokyo, making it a convenient option for a day trip.
- Water Quality: Be aware that Tokyo Bay areas can have pollution issues; some Olympic events were moved from Odaiba due to water quality concerns.
- Beach Conditions: Some beaches in this area have artificially added white sand on the upper half, while the water's edge may be rockier.
- Footwear: You may need to remove shoes before stepping onto the sand depending on specific beach rules.
- Alternatives: For potentially nicer beaches, consider heading to Kanagawa Prefecture (Zushi, Kamakura, Enoshima) or further down the Chiba coast (Tateyama).
- Season: July is very hot and humid; sea air provides some relief but sun protection is essential.
Japanese Language & Culture Notes
- Makuhari (幕張): A major business and residential district in Chiba City, known for the Makuhari Messe convention center.
- Inage (稲毛): A ward in Chiba City; the beach is often referred to as Inage Kaigan.
- Beach Culture: While Japan has many beaches, urban beaches near Tokyo often serve more as parks than pristine swimming destinations.
- Olympics Context: The video was recorded just before the Tokyo 2020 Olympics (held in 2021), providing context on venue changes due to environmental concerns.
Food & Drink Guide
- Blueberries: Peter mentions having a trunk full of blueberries that are heating up in the sun.

00:00:10 John Daub: Welcome everybody, welcome to Chiba. This is the Makuhari Inage Beach, I think it's what it's called. We're going to turn right here and you're going to get a chance to see a beautiful beach on a lovely summer day just a few days out from the Tokyo 2020-2021 Olympics. Whoa. For anybody who's wondering what the beach is like in Japan around the city of Tokyo, this is what it looks like. I believe that the venue for some of the Olympic sports is right here. Only in Japan Beach could be the name of this live stream.
00:00:50 John Daub: How you doing everybody? Welcome. It is a very hot day today. July is like that. Kind of humid, but you have some sea air coming in here. This is potato cam quality. So already the quality is looking pretty bad here. Peter is here and we'll do our best to give him a little bit of a tour. We'll give you a view. If it looks like the signal is not going to be very good, then we might just upload this one a little bit later and bring you this live for right now. But I think you should get a chance to take a look at this really amazing beach here.
00:01:44 Peter von Gomm: Here's your mic, sir.
00:01:50 John Daub: Don't, you're actually live right now.
00:02:07 Peter von Gomm: No longer in Minecraft. I have my trunk. I have my sand castle bucket and mankini.
00:02:12 John Daub: Keep your mankini to yourself. But you left me in the trunk again.
00:02:15 Peter von Gomm: I don't think so. It's full. It's full of blueberries that are now heating up here.
00:02:20 John Daub: W.I.T. Turbo's in the house. Jennifer French says you don't age at all, Peter. And they want you to do a Baywatch run.
00:02:29 Peter von Gomm: That was not me. It was somebody else to do a Baywatch run. Yeah, this is about. I'm not wearing my mankini.
00:02:41 John Daub: No mankinis, please. I'm wearing a square cut bonnet.
00:02:44 Peter von Gomm: Yeah, you can handle that. Get that to yourself.
00:02:47 John Daub: We did go to, it was a lot of fun. We bought more than. We're not going to be here too long. Listen to the sound of the waves going by.
00:03:05 Peter von Gomm: How's the quality?
00:03:06 John Daub: Not bad. That looks really clear, actually. Oh, I spoke too soon. All right. It's a little bit of a Minecraft? I think the mic might be going straight into the wind. I don't know.
00:03:28 Peter von Gomm: Works here.
00:03:32 John Daub: Are you guys ready? Are you getting wind noise?
00:03:37 Peter von Gomm: You shouldn't. There's a wind buffer on all of it.
00:03:40 John Daub: Now. Did you break wind?
00:03:42 Peter von Gomm: No. Come on now.
00:03:45 John Daub: It's really, really beautiful. You know, gimbal, give us a nice straight plane here. Jennifer French wants to go straight down into the water. We will do that right now. There's a romantic scene of two kids in high school really having a nice day. Oh, right. Over here. They're building like jetties or something. Something up here that goes out into the water with like a cafe and lounge chairs. All kinds of cool stuff. Yeah. It's still under construction right now. Let's go down to the water. Your wish is our command. It is our wish.
00:04:31 John Daub: I get it right the first time. I'm wearing shoes because they're required by law when you drive. So I might have to take them off. I'm not sure. I guess I have to take them off.
00:04:44 Peter von Gomm: Are you going to take your shoes off?
00:04:48 John Daub: Peter, everyone can hear you fiddling with the mic, playing around with the mic, trying to be a hero. All right. I'm going to take off my shoes here.
00:05:01 Peter von Gomm: It's my mic. Really? How about now?
00:05:14 John Daub: No. Now is better. That's weird. No change. Is it bad?
00:05:25 Peter von Gomm: Bit better. How could it be worse? It's on there pretty good. It should be okay. It's good now.
00:05:41 John Daub: Are you going to take your shoes off?
00:05:42 Peter von Gomm: Go team Germany, Tokyo 2021 from the United States Coast Guard.
00:05:52 John Daub: Really? Why? US Coast Guard just wrote, go Germany. All right. I'm going to go for it. Jennifer said get close to the water. Yeah. Jennifer said it, so I got to do it.
00:06:16 Peter von Gomm: I won't go that far. Not for 20 bucks.
00:06:23 John Daub: It's not funny. All right. Let's go check out this one. Oh, you're not doing it.
00:06:27 Peter von Gomm: No, you can. You just put your shoes on. You can be your girly man and girly boy can stay there.
00:06:35 John Daub: That's so warm. Holy smokes. Holy smokes. This is so warm.
00:06:51 Peter von Gomm: Vaughn, I'm not doing it for any amount of money. Come on now. Oh, you got your shoes off. Interesting. Right? The water temperature feels like a very warm 28 degrees Celsius, which is ... Yeah.
00:07:07 John Daub: This is like bath water. All right. There's a ... Mariana's Trench is right here. Let's see how deep it goes. The little shovel. It's Director Cameron's depths of the abyss here. Mariana's Trench? Yeah. It's very summery. Yeah. So, Chiba is in the ... Oh, there's the ... Oh, there it is. They do have ... There's that Hulk Hogan on the right over there. Giving them a ... That's Hulk Hogan.
00:08:01 Peter von Gomm: When are you going to do the Baywatch run? Want me to start a stampede.
00:08:08 John Daub: Well, let's say this wasn't perfect. We're doing a promotion. We do want people to come and to visit Chiba. Right? I like ... Chiba's our neighbor. I like this boat here.
00:08:17 Peter von Gomm: That's for the lifeguards. That's not really Hulk Hogan. Who wrote that?
00:08:23 John Daub: Pamela Anderson is over there, I think. Now, there are a lot of factories along the Chiba coast. You can see that in the distance here. The water isn't the most beautiful color. If you're a fan of caramel colored foods, this almost looks good enough to eat. I think this is what you would call caramel. I don't know what you would call it. It's caramel colored. Caramel sea. Caramel ocean colored. If anything, that'll help the sales pitch for hungry people.
00:08:53 Peter von Gomm: It's a dishwater blonde. Dishwater ... No, that's ... Come on. That's what it is. Caramel. Slightly discolored, but you know what? It could be from rust from all the boats out there. There's a load of ... Lots of boats and ships, I guess you'd call them, really. Yeah. Making their way out across the Pacific. Yeah. Over here is where the ships are unloading the docks. You see that?
00:09:19 John Daub: If you're wondering where this is, there's a link in the description of this video. All you have to do is click the Google Maps and it will take you in there so you get an idea. Let's walk down the beach here. Let's just take a look. I apologize if the signal's not good. I'll watch the playback and if not, I'll do an uploaded video on this because I think it's important to see this live. I think it's important to see it live. But it's also good to get an idea of what the beach and the water is like here in Japan for the surfing events because I believe the surfing events, or some of them, are not too far away from here.
00:09:56 John Daub: All right. So, Von, we won't keep you too long on this livestream. I'm going to go into upload mode in about five minutes. But it's nice to hang out here. I know you're all at home, most of you at night. Our Aussie friends a few hours ahead. John Davis is a new insider. Thank you, John. Welcome. Von, get on a plane and make your way to Japan. Stow away on a mail plane if you have to. So really nice beach around here. PBG's on the other side. I can't hear him if he's saying anything. But it gives you an idea of what it's like. TDSDR is Free Willy. Yeah, let's break Willy out of here.
00:11:36 John Daub: His mic might not be working because he's a little bit too ahead of me. Peter, can you hear me? All right. Maybe the mic's not working. So having a little bit of technical difficulties, your mic might not be working.
00:11:57 Peter von Gomm: I wasn't talking. Okay. What do you think of this beach? What's your...
00:12:03 John Daub: Well, it's no Rio de Janeiro, but I think it's a nice beach. I love the white sand up here. I think they've artificially added the white sand to the upper half of the beach. But it's just nice being on the beach. And the water. Hey, look at that crow. Or is it a pigeon? All right. No, this is not Rio. This is Tokyo. The water is a little bit cleaner here. Although they were going to do the triathlon, one of the Olympic sports at Odaiba Beach, but they found too much pollutants in there. Too many pollutants. So they had to move it. I believe so.
00:12:45 Peter von Gomm: That's weird because that's a manmade beach. Yeah, but Tokyo Bay is still kind of not nice. Probably a lot of runoff there. PBG, the strong silent type. Is that... I'm just enjoying the sun. Yeah. It's nice to be out here. Did you put any mosquito... Sun repellent on your nose?
00:13:03 John Daub: I did. Yeah. I've got a hat. Is my dome getting red?
00:13:09 Peter von Gomm: No, it looks good. You must be dying in that hat.
00:13:11 John Daub: I'm feeling good. You know, actually, it's better this way or else the wind starts getting all over it. I don't like it.
00:13:26 Peter von Gomm: Wind in your hair? Yeah. It's all messed up. Time for a shower. Time for a haircut again. I had to dye it black again. It gets so much white in there.
00:13:35 John Daub: Yeah, it fits you. Really? A gray in the temple. Like a Clooney?
00:13:40 Peter von Gomm: No. Really? Everyone's calling you Bezos. Yeah. Let me put it like this, okay? I don't think you look anything like him. He wishes. He wishes. I wish I had his Google or his Amazon account.
00:13:53 John Daub: He does not look anything like Jeff Bezos for those... Just like I don't look anything like the Karate Kid, but I own it. Hey! I own it. Whatever. It's fun. A Bond villain you could be. Lex Luthor. We got a lot of people. Look, just because... All right.
00:14:11 Peter von Gomm: Peter is a criminal mastermind based on his serial talker and all the knowledge that you have in your noggin now from having studied the... Yeah. That stuff comes to me. Yeah. I've got a... I'm gonna get a memory for the rhyme. Yeah.
00:14:28 John Daub: All right. Let's go down here in the corner. Yeah. So, look. It looks like we're gonna have to do an uploaded version of this. So, I'll start over and upload this maybe tonight when I get back home and you get a chance to see it in 4K, which is maybe better than Minecraft. But, again, I think it's important for you to check out what it's like to be... To check out what the beaches are like in Japan and Chiba, probably the closest to Tokyo, except down in Kanagawa, there's some nice ones. Nice beaches like Zushi and around Kamakura area. Yeah. That's a lovely beach. Zushi.
00:15:19 Peter von Gomm: You prefer Zushi over the Chiba direction? Probably, yeah. Zushi, that area might be nicer. That would be like equivalent Long Beach Island in New Jersey or something, I always feel.
00:15:30 John Daub: This is more laid back. There's not a lot of stuff here. Yeah. Over in the other area, towards Izu area, you have like Enoshima, Kamakura, Hase, all of those places around there. Nicer beaches and a lot more little interesting towns to stop at and check out. Yeah. Here, there's not as much. Not as many people either. So it's not a bad place to be. Enjoy the sea.
00:16:04 Peter von Gomm: Hi. You got some friends. Hello. So what do you think of this beach area? What do you think of the beach here in Chiba? Is it worth coming to? Would you bring your family here?
00:16:12 John Daub: I would. Leo's a little bit too young for going to the beach, but I think in a year or so, he might really enjoy it.
00:16:21 Peter von Gomm: Joji likes the beach, right? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Tateyama's really nice too on the end of Chiba. That's a really nice place. I haven't been there in years though. As a family, we don't go to the beach very often. It's a bit of a trip, you know? You got to rent a car. Yeah, you got to rent a car. No motorcycle. No motorcycle. Yeah. Well, you can't in Vietnam. You can have a whole family on one bike. That's true. Not in Japan. But yeah, the beach we go to generally are outside of Japan. It's been a while.
00:16:55 John Daub: Water's wet. Feels good. I've had my feet in here for the last... You can see my zebra stripes. Did you say the water is wet? Somebody wrote it. I don't know. I'm just reading what it says here. Water is very wet and it's very warm. It's kind of rocky, but it doesn't hurt our feet. And a little bit further on, you have white sandy beaches, which looks like it was imported here. Yeah. All right, cool.
00:17:23 John Daub: So, no stop rights in John Davis, really? All right, so I'm going to end this livestream, but we're going to do a 4K version to upload later because I think it doesn't do this place justice to watch it live in pixelated format. So, thanks so much for supporting this livestream. I appreciate it. I'll put up the livestream in your honor. So, have a great day. See you, guys. Bye. TDSDR. We're going to call it the Free Willy Upload. Sponsored by Jennifer French, who wants you to do a Baywatch run.
00:17:52 Peter von Gomm: You going to do it? You going to do a headstand? Okay. Cool. You want to do a headstand?
00:17:56 John Daub: All right, we'll do that and then head back to make sure our blueberries and our frozen Australian meat pies don't melt. Right, right. All right. See you, everybody. Have a good day. Thanks for watching from the beach here in Chiba. See you later.
