Summary

Leo rides Tokyo's SPACE BOAT

Overview

In this family-focused adventure, John Daub takes his young son Leo on his very first ride aboard Tokyo's futuristic Himiko Space Boat. Departing from Odaiba with his wife Kanae, John navigates some confusion regarding ticket booths closed due to the pandemic before successfully boarding. The video captures the unique sci-fi design of the vessel, from its gull-wing doors to its "space toilet," while Leo mostly sleeps through the experience.

The journey offers stunning views of Tokyo Bay landmarks, including a passage underneath the Rainbow Bridge and sightings of Tokyo Tower and Tokyo Skytree. John provides commentary on the boat's history, potential discontinuation, and the changing tourism landscape as Japan begins to reopen. Although technical issues cut the livestream short before reaching Asakusa, the footage provides a rare look at the boat's interior and the bay's skyline from the water.

Timeline / Chapters

Japan Travel Tips

  • Ticket Buying: During the pandemic, some ticket booths were closed. Verify which company operates the boat you intend to ride (Tokyo Cruise vs. others) before arriving at the dock.
  • Pricing: Tickets were approximately 1,500 yen per person (about $12 USD at the time) for standard seating.
  • Seating: Reserved seats on the top deck cost extra (around 3,000 yen or $25 USD) but offer better views.
  • Facilities: The boat has restrooms on board, including a uniquely designed "space toilet" on the upper deck.
  • Timing: The ride to Asakusa takes approximately 40–45 minutes. Departures are scheduled (e.g., 12:00 PM), so arrive early.
  • Outside Deck: You can go outside on the upper deck, but be prepared for wind and potential exhaust fumes depending on the direction.

Japanese Language & Culture Notes

  • Himiko (ひみこ): The name of the space boat, referencing the ancient Queen Himiko. John briefly confuses it with "Emeraldus" (likely Emeraldas, referencing the space pirate ship Arcadia by Leiji Matsumoto, which inspired the design).
  • Yakatabune (屋形船): Traditional Japanese pleasure boats with roofs. John compares a competitor's boat to this style.
  • Doko demo ii yo (どこでもいいよ): "Anywhere is fine." Kanae says this regarding seating arrangements.
  • Port vs. Starboard: John explains nautical terms to the audience (Port = Left, Starboard = Right).

Food & Drink Guide

  • Coffee: John mentions having coffee at Eggs 'n Things (Hawaiian pancake chain) in Odaiba before the ride. They were cut off from refills after 11 AM.
  • Beer: Available for purchase on board some boats. John notes competitors serve beer, and reserved seats on the Himiko allow you to bring your own.
  • Pancakes: Mentioned as part of the breakfast at Eggs 'n Things.

People

  • John Daub: Host and narrator. Enthusiastic about the boat's design and concerned about its business future.
  • Kanae Daub: John's wife. Helps manage Leo and the stroller. Participates in the tour and selfies.
  • Leo: John and Kanae's young son. Sleepy and cranky for most of the ride, missing much of the spectacle.
  • Peter von Gomm: Mentioned as a past guest on a similar livestream four years prior.

Key Takeaways

  • The Himiko Space Boat is a unique piece of Tokyo transportation history with a futuristic design inspired by anime.
  • The service was struggling financially during the pandemic, and John expresses hope that tourism recovery will save it.
  • The route offers excellent views of Tokyo Bay landmarks often unseen from land, especially the underside of Rainbow Bridge.
  • Livestreaming on moving boats in Tokyo Bay can suffer from connectivity issues.

Notable Quotes

  • 00:00:00 "Tokyo, there's a space boat. And today we're going to be riding it."
  • 00:01:35 "Now space boat takes approximately 40, 45 minutes to get to Asakusa."
  • 00:06:29 "That's where Captain Kirk sits there."
  • 00:08:25 "Best toilet ever. I've seen some amazing toilets."
  • 00:15:36 "If you do come to Tokyo, please do ride the space boat because they're not doing well business-wise."
  • 00:18:13 "Godzilla has destroyed it many times, and the citizens of Tokyo have rebuilt it many times."

00:00:00 John Daub: Tokyo, there's a space boat. And today we're going to be riding it. And Leo is going to be taking his first space boat trip ever. This is the Himiko. Himiko. Emeraldus? Himiko.

00:00:18 John Daub: In Japanese, it's a little confusing in the katakana. Oh, that was a beautiful place. You can see Tokyo, Tokyo's Rainbow Bridge right there. And you have a very sleepy, cranky baby with a very hardworking mother. Leo space boat. Do you understand what's going on at all? Space boat. How you doing everybody? So I learned that you can't buy the tickets for the space boat here in Odaiba right now. Maybe it's because of the pandemic. I don't know. But the booth is closed. And another ship is coming. The other company is selling the tickets. So it's a little bit confusing. That other company is not space boat. So let me just show you really quickly as they disembark. See the Tokyo Cruise booth is closed in the middle there. And the ticket booth right here. That's not the right one. That's a different boat.

00:00:52 John Daub: So we're going to Asakusa. I don't know if I'm going to bring you the entire beach is over there. But I'll tell you this. Leo is very sleepy. Space boat Leo. Space boat Leo. Leo space boat. Space boat. Space boat. Space boat. It's his bedtime. Nap time. We thought that the space boat was leaving at 11. So like a little bit later than usual. Are you going to take him in that? Then we'll take the baby car. Okay. I got the stroller then. Follow mom.

00:01:35 Kanae Daub: Now space boat takes approximately 40, 45 minutes to get to Asakusa, which is on the other side of Tokyo. And I'm going to be taking you underneath the Rainbow Bridge with Leo.

00:02:09 John Daub: Leo, I guess. We'll see what happens. Anything is possible. It's live stream. How could you predict that Leo would be crying? Hey, Leo, doggy. Leo, dog. That usually works sometimes. Look at him. He's an uppity dog. How you doing? That should be a reality show. The dogs of Tokyo. They're very, very interesting. Leo, you're going on the space boat, buddy. How do you feel? I don't think he realizes what's happening. Yeah. So space boat is right there. And here was your phone. Can I take a picture? Do you have your phone? I could take picture with you and Leo and the space boat. It takes off. It departs at 12 o'clock. So we have about 10 minutes to go. Right. All right, Leo. You ready? Mom, you have to clean your screen. Oh my gosh. All right. Three, two, one.

00:03:30 John Daub: Leo, I'm making dog noises. Leo, look at me. Hey, look at Dada. Obviously does not. He's not really excited, is he? All right, here you go. It is a very beautiful ship. Is it a boat? He doesn't understand. I wanted to carry Leo. Zane's got the Dracula emoji. No Leo emoji for him. And all of you are invited to depart with us. Ho, ho, ho, ho. The pirate's life for him and that other kid. How much was it? 6,000 yen. Oh, 1,500 yen each. So about 12 dollars a piece. All right, here we go. We're now boarding. Sean says there's some pixelation. Sorry, it'll get better as soon as we get away from the dock, I think.

00:05:15 John Daub: Thank you. Look at her. Oh my gosh. It's up close. And this is perfect. Look at the side trap door. Oh, can we enter this way? The way that the doors open are so awesome. Look at this. It's like one of those DeLoreans from the 1980s, but it's on a boat. What? All right, you know what? Let's go sit next to the opening. There's only five other people on the whole boat, which is crazy. I believe we can go outside. Yeah, we can go outside. Look at the windows. Whoa! Ah, okay, that's reserved. There's no ramp, so I have to just wing it.

00:06:29 John Daub: Aaron Buggy. Treat it with love. Doko demo ii yo (anywhere is fine). Because you can walk around. Ah, it's up to you. Anywhere you like. Because I'm going topside. I can't believe we're inside the space boat after years. Look at the command center. Look at the command center. That's where Captain Kirk sits there. What? That's pretty cool. Yeah, it is. Oh my gosh, I want to sit there and just take off. Where's the one that says dive, go underwater? Do you see that button? I always wanted to know if they just never push it. Guys, I can't see. Is that the button? Submerge. It says submerge. Full power ahead. Mike Da Silva. Engage.

00:07:32 John Daub: We're the missiles. They have missiles on this boat. Javelins. Ready for anything. This is the side ejector door. This is pretty cool. Warp drive. We're not going to need that for warp speed. I don't think that anything could save us. Warp speed, I don't think anything could save us. Leo, you're on space boat. Touch. Give it up. All right, let's bring him top deck. Hey, we can still go up. Yeah. Wow. All right, I'm going to take you top deck. I think Kanae and Leo are going to stay inside because he's cranky.

00:08:25 John Daub: Wow, look at this. It's like an airplane. Look at this. That door is really shut. That would be dope. So Kanae, these are reserved seats with this window, right? So you have to pay an extra 30 dollars or about 25 with the exchange rate right now for sitting at the top deck. You can sit at the reserved seats. I don't know if that's a good idea, but if you have four people and you want to drink beer or something, you can bring your own beer on board. Oh, and this is also... Oh, the toilets are here. Let's take a look at the toilets. Push. Wow, it's a space toilet. Oh, my God. Oh, my God. Kanae, look at the space toilet. It's black. That's pretty cool. You can sit here, too. Oh, my God. You can have a guest sitting in the space toilet. That's awesome. Oh, if you flush it, you get warp-speeded to another area. It's like a wormhole. Oh, that's awesome. Best toilet ever. I've seen some amazing toilets.

00:09:46 John Daub: Yeah, that's a toilet. That's going to be second grade. Yeah, that's just... Yeah, yeah you can go. Do it. Look at the space age. Look at the LED lights inside of the stairway. I guess you can only see it at night. Yeah. Very subtle effect. Oh, look at that phone. You got your phone? Oh, no one's gonna steal it. It's safe. Whoa, look at that boomerang! Or is that a missile? The reserve seat next to the toilet. Well said. If you gotta go, you only have to go a few steps. There it is! Fuji TV! Oh, this is awesome. If a giant came here to play volleyball, there it is up there. So, the aliens who attack that are 100 meters tall, there you go. Do Odaiba first and stay away from our area. You'll have more fun in Odaiba.

00:10:53 Kanae Daub: You're going down?

00:10:54 John Daub: No, I go. Oh, okay. I'm like, can I give up? No. This is Rainbow Bridge and all of you that are joining us, all 621 of you, welcome. And we're gonna be taking you underneath the Rainbow Bridge, which is a pretty cool experience. Going to the other side. Now, we're not gonna livestream all the way to Asakusa. We've done that before with Peter von Gomm and Jojo, like four years ago. We were a little bit younger. You might wanna check out that livestream. I think I did it when we got married, too. I brought my nieces. We crossed the other way into here.

00:11:35 John Daub: Are you with your daughter? Leo, although he's very cute, I would not call him a daughter. He's downstairs. I believe Kanae is bringing him back up here. Hold on a second. This is, it seems surreal. I haven't been on for all through the pandemic. And now we're back. We had breakfast at the place called Eggs 'n Things, which is like a Hawaiian pancake place. In there. And they have oh, you can drink coffee until 11 a.m. And they cut me off when they saw I was drinking the whole pot. Now, that was the competitor's boat. That looks more like a yakatabune (traditional Japanese pleasure boat). It's a nice boat. It's a little bit cheaper, I believe. You can get beer. You can get a beer here? Everybody's drinking beer. You can buy it on the boat? Yeah. Whoa. They have a bar. Well now. It's a little early.

00:12:41 John Daub: Eh, where are you going with that boat? That boat, are you going there? Yeah, it's a different company. Oh, really? Yeah, sometimes the other companies are better if it's not as crowded. And I don't know, sometimes you don't need space boat. And I say sometimes like 1% of the time. Other than 99, it's space boat. Only. Hey, Leo, it's space boat. Don't you, oh my. You've been waiting since you were born to ride this space boat and look at you, you're sleeping now. It's cold before here. How could you sleep in this space boat? Why is it so hot? I think maybe when the wind starts, you know, from riding, he'll wake up. He's suffering from space lag, which is like jet lag. Oh my gosh. I'm so sorry. Leo, no. No. Oh my. Space boat is so much fun. He wants to sleep through the adventure? Oh my gosh.

00:14:04 John Daub: I don't think you can take the ferry ride to Nijima, the jetfoil. I'm getting an entire nose full of exhaust. So, best not to stand here too long, let you get exhaust in your lungs. I don't know. It just smells awful. Look at those port windows back here. Starboard and port. You know what? Oh! It went down. Do you know which side is starboard and which side is port, Kanae? Port side, starboard side? I don't think they're going to close the door. Right, Ronald's got it right. Port is left. Starboard is right. Although, you would just say port. No, no, right's in here. Let him sleep or he will be cranky. She's just standing on top of the space boat like this without a space suit. He's got a space suit. It's pretty awesome. Well, we got pictures now to show him that he has ridden the space boat. Kanae's not going to give up on that selfie. She's not giving up on the selfie.

00:15:36 John Daub: I saw that. Adam is here for the beer fun. Thank you, Adam. Oh gosh. Really? Brett Taylor. Roger. Thank you. In one year, it won't be possible. Yeah, one year the boat might not be here. If you do come to Tokyo, please do ride the space boat because they're not doing well business-wise and there's talk that the space boat might not be around much longer. Although, I think with tourism returning in June, I got my fingers crossed that more people will ride the space boat and they will not go out of business. They'll be able to stay in business forever and ever until the future when they can fly underwater or above water. He is so out of it. I have to change the title. Leo sleeps through space boat, not rides. Sleeps through the ride. David writes in here he's high on diesel. It could be. The exhaust is going that way now. I'm on the other side so he doesn't sleep. Oh, there's our competitor. The race is on. They don't have any missiles. They have no idea. Jotty, I don't think they know. They don't have any missiles. They don't have one of these. This is the new Tokyo Drift by boat. Drifting. Hey, Diana Martin's here. She's in on the race here. Torotoro Boko's here. Are we going to win? Well, stage one, I think we have this one beat here. Check this out. We're now about to go under the bridge. It's under the bridge. Look. Hold up. Dun, dun, dun, dun, dun.

00:18:13 John Daub: I hope he picks up speed and then drifts right into one of those pylons. Yeah. Between the pylons. Dude, do you have any idea? We should have given him some of that coffee. It was all you could drink. Just kidding. This is pretty cool. I've seen this for the last two and a half years from bridges. Now we're finally on it going underneath the bridge. Here is the underbelly of Rainbow Bridge, which you never get to see. What? Oh, Tokyo Tower on the bottom right. Whoa. Whoa, that was awesome. We just went underneath the Rainbow Bridge onwards to this side. There's Tokyo Tower right in the center of your screen. Godzilla has destroyed it many times, and the citizens of Tokyo have rebuilt it many times. This is the island of Kachidoki, Tsukishima, and Tokyo Skytree in the distance. Look at that. We got off both towers in one... Well, now it's gone. Go to the park. Oh, yeah. I was just there last week. I was there last week taking video of the boat going the other direction. What? That's the old Tsukiji market moved here. That's the Toyosu market. On the end is one of my favorite parks. It's so exciting to be on the other side. He's out. The Olympic Village is right straight ahead. Right there. Of course, the Olympians are gone. I think it's a lot of Olympians, and they're going to start moving in the residents soon. There's a park on the end with a pirate ship right there, but it's still closed. So the citizens... I have a word, shouku (loss?), and I paid for the park. They should open it up. Oh, wow. This is exciting. Oh, that's the InterContinental Hotel that we stayed at a few years ago. Oh, yeah. You can look down on all space boat all day long. From the InterContinental Hotel, Tokyo Bay. Super exciting.

00:21:30 John Daub: Takeshiba right... Mike Silva right. That's Takeshiba Port where the pirate ship is. One of them. So where did I depart to Ogasawara? That's right. Yeah, that area. Yeah, the boat to Ogasawara, which takes 24 hours ferry. Tokyo Island. I departed there three or four years ago now. Wow. One of the best trips ever. Four years ago it was. So ladies and gentlemen, we are on the space boat. This is a long time coming. We haven't had a chance to ride the space boat for a very long time. I'm sensing that a lot of people get the feeling that this is at the end, the pandemic. Traveling opening up. Of course, it's not. You still have to take precautions, but the end of the travel ban seems to be here. A lot more people are coming to Japan right now, which is exciting. I'm not sure if it's because of the pandemic or because of the pandemic, but I'm sure it's because of the pandemic. A lot of people who were waiting to move here are starting to move here too. It's a good sign. I can't tell Leo that there's a helicopter over us either because he's fast asleep. You can see Tokyo Skytree between the buildings sometimes. That's kind of neat.

00:23:16 John Daub: Does this boat go directly to Asakusa? It doesn't stop in Takeshiba? Sometimes the boat will stop in Hamamatsucho. He's here. Sorry. The livestream sort of cut out in the center of Tokyo Bay. This is a bad area. Alex, thank you. Lunch money for you and your family. Thanks for sharing this experience. Thanks for being here. Do we have a black screen again? No. Zoom? Oh my gosh. This is the worst. I'm going to try my best. All right. How about now? Black screen. Buffering. Oh no. The Zoom is in. Let me try it again, Jason. Hold on. All right. Hopefully the Zoom bug is gone. This is going to Miyakejima, this strange looking colorful boat, which you might not see, depending on whether or not you can see. Jotty writes a nope. If it's zoomed in, is it zoomed in on a colorful boat? Oh gosh. I'm really sorry, guys. Looks like we have another black screen issue here. All right. I'm going to Instagram Live. How about now? Is it zoomed on my... Is it zoomed badly on me? I'm going to Instagram Live. Sorry about this, guys. I'll go to Instagram Live and continue this. It's onlyinjapan.tv. Moderators put in the link there. See you soon. Bye.
