Arriving in Japan and Getting over Jet Lag Travel Advice
Arriving in Japan and Getting over Jet Lag Travel Advice
Overview
John Daub and his son Leo have just returned to Japan after a 14-hour flight from New York, and they are immediately tackling the challenges of jet lag, especially with children. Filmed at the Harumi Flag Playground in Tokyo—the former Olympic Village—they use the expansive play structures to help Leo stay active and adjust to local time. John shares honest reflections on what went wrong during their travel routine, such as screen time on the plane and irregular sleep schedules, and offers practical advice for families traveling long-haul to Japan.
The video combines personal experience with actionable travel tips, covering everything from sunlight exposure to meal timing. John highlights the legality of melatonin in Japan, suggests alternative accommodation strategies near Narita Airport, and encourages parents to take advantage of Japan's early sunrises during summer. Throughout the episode, Leo explores the playground's famous white slide and pirate ship, providing a lively backdrop to the discussion on overcoming travel fatigue.

Japan Travel Tips
- Jet Lag with Kids: Expose children to sunlight immediately upon arrival and keep them active during the day.
- Melatonin: Melatonin is not legally sold over-the-counter in Japan; bring personal use amounts if needed, but consult local regulations.
- Accommodation: Consider staying near Narita Airport or Tokyo Disneyland (e.g., Sheraton Grande) for the first night to ease into the time zone.
- Early Mornings: In summer, the sun rises around 4:30 AM. Use this time to visit popular spots like Shibuya when they are empty.
- Hydration: Keep kids hydrated in the summer heat, especially when playing outside.
- Meal Times: Start eating on Japan time as soon as possible to reset internal clocks.
- Screen Time: Avoid excessive screen time on the plane and upon arrival to help adjust sleep rhythms.
Japanese Language & Culture Notes
- Sumida-gawa (Sumida River): Referenced regarding the famous fireworks display that marks the start of summer fireworks season.
- Land of the Rising Sun: John references this nickname to encourage taking advantage of early sunrises.
- Melatonin Regulations: Unlike the US, melatonin is regulated as a medication in Japan and cannot be freely purchased.
- Olympic Village: The Harumi Flag area was built for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics athletes and is now residential housing with public parks.
Food & Drink Guide
- Sushi: Leo mentions this as his favorite Japanese food.
- Airplane Food (ANA): John notes the food on the return flight from America to Japan was not good, whereas the flight from Japan to America was okay.
- Hydration: Emphasized throughout the video due to summer heat; water is essential during playground activities.
People
- John Daub: Host and father. Sharing personal experiences and travel advice based on returning from the US with his son.
- Leo: John's son. Appears throughout the video playing on the playground and interacting with John. He is recovering from jet lag.
- Kanae Daub: John's wife. Mentioned as being concerned about Leo's exhaustion and melatonin use, but does not appear on camera.
- Grandpa/Grandma: Mentioned in passing regarding gifts and smoking rules.
Key Takeaways
- Jet lag affects children significantly; planning ahead (shifting bedtimes gradually) is crucial but often difficult.
- Sunlight exposure and physical activity are the best natural remedies for resetting circadian rhythms.
- Staying outside the city center (e.g., Narita) for the first night can help transition smoothly.
- Japan's strict regulations on medications like melatonin require travelers to plan ahead.
- Early mornings in Tokyo offer a unique, crowd-free experience during summer.
Notable Quotes
- 00:01:33 "One of the things you have to do to get over the jet lag is to get kids to stay as active as they can. As active in the sunshine as possible."
- 00:02:35 "I asked ChatGPT exactly what I did wrong here so I could understand."

00:00:01 John Daub: Hello everybody. This is Leo and I'm John and we just arrived back in Japan after a 14-hour flight from New York. White slide playground that you've never heard about. We're going to show you that too here in Tokyo. This is the Olympic Village where the Tokyo Athletes stayed, it's an awesome playground for kids.
00:00:26 John Daub: We're going to talk about, we woke up, what time did you wake up this morning? At 3:50 in the morning he woke up. And he goes to bed at 3 p.m. It's a complete disaster. There's a lot of things that you need to know when you have kids and you travel going west from Japan, from the United States to Japan. Or if you're coming from Japan going back to Europe. Or actually either way, if you're doing a long-haul flight, if you've got kids, you better plan for this. Because I did not and I'm suffering as a result. Because I was up at 3:50 in the morning. And it's 9:10 and I feel like it's like 3 p.m.
00:01:06 Leo: And many people in the playground.
00:01:09 John Daub: Yeah, we're here so early. There's like nobody here. Alright, let me show you the white slide playground because that's what Leo wants to show you. Alright, tell everybody about this playground.
00:01:24 Leo: Yeah, pirate ship playground with a big mega slide on Tokyo Bay. And this is the white slide, right?
00:01:33 John Daub: One of the things you have to do to get over the jet lag is to get kids to stay as active as they can. As active in the sunshine as possible. Alright, you want to show everybody your white slide? Go down. Ready? Three, two, one, do it!
00:01:51 John Daub: He really likes that. Okay, come on back up here. We gotta talk to the people. There's a lot of things that you can do if you've got kids. And I think in the comment section of this, you're gonna see a lot of them. Look, I'm gonna be honest with you. This is the flight home. We did not fly well for this. Leo's asleep right before we arrived. It's sort of just like a free-for-all, whatever works. Just survived the 14-hour flight. That's good and all that. But the end result is that you get home and the rhythms are all out of sync.
00:02:31 John Daub: So you used your tablet a lot on the plane, right?
00:02:34 Leo: Yeah.
00:02:35 John Daub: That's probably not so good. I sleep a long time when I have a light. So I asked ChatGPT exactly what I did wrong here so I could understand. And kids can absolutely struggle with jet lag just like adults sometimes even more. Shift bedtimes gradually. I did not do that. I should have thought about that.
00:03:04 Leo: What's that plane that's next to the electric pilot?
00:03:08 John Daub: That's right. Thank you for that. The human head weighs 10 pounds.
00:03:12 Leo: He hasn't seen that movie yet.
00:03:17 John Daub: This is something that you can gradually start to build up to. We did not do that. On arrival, get them into local time ASAP. We did not do that either. Expose them to sunlight during... Our flight was delayed so it didn't really work out very good. Then the taxi ride, there was so much traffic. He slept in the car. It just was impossible. Keep them awake until 7 o'clock. Yeah, that's not going to happen. It was really hard.
00:03:42 Leo: Okay, hold on. I've got to show you the baby ant. Where is it? Here. Don't touch it. Could be poisonous.
00:03:54 John Daub: Mealtimes matter. Start eating on Japan time as soon as possible. That did not happen. He ate when he wanted to eat.
00:03:59 Leo: What did you eat on the airplane? Don't kill the ant.
00:04:05 John Daub: What did you eat on the airplane? The food wasn't good. We actually did not eat a lot on the ANA flight. When we went from America back to Japan, the food was not so good. But from Japan to America, the food was okay. I don't know what's going on there. I'll take some questions in a second. Avoid screens and melatonin right away. Melatonin is illegal in Japan. At least you cannot buy it in Japan. It's not something that we take in Japan. We have some from the United States, but it's for personal use. Which is what it's supposed to be about. But we did not take any melatonin. In fact, Kanae is somewhat worried about it. So we did avoid that. However, low doses of it seemed to be good. But again, I think that's more if you're from the US. For Japanese, it's not good. For us, we don't take melatonin because you can't even get it. And gentle activity. Walks, play in the park. And that's what we're doing today. And there's a whole timeline that we were told that we could follow here. But we did not stick to it. The result is, if you do not have some sort of guideline...
00:05:18 Leo: Matt M., leaving Japan in two days, will attend fireworks display. Nagaoka...
00:05:22 John Daub: I'll talk about that over the course of the next week. The fireworks season is starting this week. With yesterday's Sumida-gawa (Sumida River) fireworks, he was asleep. Didn't even see any of it. It was crazy. I'll talk about that this week. The fireworks is amazing, Matt. I'm so excited for you.
00:05:40 Leo: Japan is next to Lhasa.
00:05:43 John Daub: Next to what?
00:05:44 Leo: Lhasa.
00:05:45 John Daub: Lhasa? No, Lhasa.
00:05:46 Leo: Oh, Russia.
00:05:47 John Daub: Yeah. He's into geography. So he knows that Japan's next to Russia up in Hokkaido. You're going to get a lot of facts that might conflict with the entire theme of this episode. Because it's a live stream.
00:06:01 John Daub: What's your favorite Japanese food?
00:06:06 Leo: Sushi?
00:06:07 John Daub: Wait, do you like to speak English or Japanese more?
00:06:12 Leo: Why?
00:06:15 John Daub: What the heck, man? He don't speak. Yeah, Laila taught him that. Don't ask. He talks a little bit like a 13-year-old.
00:06:29 Leo: Why?
00:06:33 John Daub: Is that poison ivy? He learned about that too. If you touch it, blood will come from your hand.
00:06:42 Leo: Right here. What would happen? Why would I touch it if blood is going to come from my hand?
00:06:46 John Daub: Why would I touch that? No. This. No. So don't touch it?
00:06:53 Leo: Yeah. You touch it.
00:06:54 John Daub: I'll give you $5 if you touch it. That's a Lincoln. No, don't touch it. Don't do it. Yeah. I'll give you $5 anyways. Grandpa gave him $55 because he likes President Grant and President Lincoln. He's very smart. He knew how to get $55 from Grandpa.
00:07:23 John Daub: Are we going to show you this park in a second? Yeah, in a second here. A couple of other things. My wife, Kanae, does not want to keep him awake. She feels really bad for him because he's completely exhausted. I want to throw ice water on him, but my wife said no. I don't know if that would be child abuse. I don't think so.
00:07:46 Leo: And don't smoke, Grandma.
00:07:48 John Daub: I mean, can I? Yeah. He said don't smoke to my mother who smokes. Don't smoke, Mom. And can I? Kevin, don't smoke either. He's very strict. Leo's very strict.
00:08:02 John Daub: Anything else? Any other advice for general people? The human head weighs 10 pounds. I don't know what it means to keep kids awake. I guess ice water, but we'll figure it out. He's not going to bed until at least 6 p.m. today.
00:08:32 Leo: You want to drink water?
00:08:34 John Daub: Okay. The other thing is in the summer, you got to keep people hydrated. All right, just for all parents, I want you to plan. And this means for you too. Probably the first two days are going to be really weird. If you wake up at 4 o'clock, you can take advantage of the fact that you're in the land of the rising sun. The sun comes up at like 4 o'clock. So I'd say at this time of year, 4:30. So you can go outside. There's nobody around. And you'll have the place all to yourself. It almost looks like a zombie apocalypse. Like Shibuya is completely empty and it's fully daylight out. So that's kind of cool to see Tokyo in another way. But also maybe stay in hotels that are outside of the city, closer to the airport. Just give you time to get used to the time. Staying in Narita is not a bad idea. It's a small town. It's close to the airport. You can wake up early there, walk around the Narita Shrine. I also like Tokyo Disneyland as a stay-in. You can wake up early and you can go to bed early. And you get massive rooms at that Sheraton. We always like to stay at the Sheraton.
00:09:43 John Daub: And so for the next five minutes, we're going to play here together. We're going to go up to the top of the slide and we're going to try to slide down here live. All right. Let's go do it, Leo. I'll take your hat. Let's go do it.
00:10:05 John Daub: He's got a whole system here. All right. I'm Captain Hook and you're Peter Pan. All right. Hold on. Arr, matey. I got you now. Where's the crocodile?
00:10:25 Leo: There's an alligator.
00:10:28 John Daub: I don't even know if there's a signal. Are you going this way? I'm going the other way. We got to go up the mega slide. Arr. What is this?
00:10:48 Leo: Japan is next to Russia. Look. Oh, yeah, Japan is next to Russia. Do you know where Madagascar is?
00:11:00 John Daub: That's New Zealand.
00:11:02 Leo: That's right, Madagascar.
00:11:03 John Daub: Okay, good. Go, go! Alright, argh! You get a nice view of Tokyo Bay up here.
00:11:24 Leo: No, why don't you go first?
00:11:27 John Daub: You go first. Rock, scissors, paper, go. You win, so you can go first. No, rock. We didn't set the parameters. Whoever wins goes first. Okay. No, the rock. So I go first?
00:11:44 Leo: Yeah. But what about you?
00:11:46 John Daub: No, you go first. But if you go first, I can film you on the camera. No, you can't go first. I don't want to go first.
00:11:53 Leo: It's scary. I'm scared.
00:11:54 John Daub: You can see there's a sign that says Tokyo over there. I'll take you there at the end of this. If we ever get to slide. I don't want to go. It's scary. No, it's not scary.
00:12:11 Leo: Yeah, but, yeah, but what? Mom, my butt hurts. I don't like spiders. Ah! You better go.
00:12:28 John Daub: What if there's like other kids coming? There's nobody coming here. It's deserted. My butt's so hot.
00:12:37 Leo: Oh, that's friction.
00:12:46 John Daub: All right, hurry up. On this side. Oh, I'm surprised that my shorts didn't melt off. You know how everyone's using the synthetic material. Watch out for your skin. It doesn't work so good in summer. You got sweat. All right, Leo, let's go show everybody the Tokyo sign before we go. This pirate ship's pretty sweet. And again, to beat the jet lag, it's good to get kids playing. Maybe take a nap for 30 minutes at 12 o'clock. Then throw ice water on him. And then go out and play again. That's my goal today. And then I'll start editing again tonight. But I'm going to have jet lag, and I don't know if I'm going to be able to do it. This is part of the problem. I want to edit today, but Mama's gone. And I'm not going to say no, because then we can hang out.
00:13:53 John Daub: Oh, hey, hey, Aaron. Aaron's here. Aaron, do you remember the Airbuggy [?]? That was your sweet ride for a while. Yeah. Aaron's back. This is the Olympic Park. These are all the Olympian except for the high rise here. These are the Olympic Village houses and now they house Japanese citizens. And across the street, they brought this down and built this after the Olympics were done. And it says, Tokyo. It's pretty sweet. Boom.
00:14:29 John Daub: All right, Leo, go inside the O. O for Ohio. There are two Os in Tokyo, and there are two Os in Ohio. So there's… there's that and that's about it it could be like this o h i o you could sort of see it which also means good morning ohio when it says take your trash home and no smoking. All right go inside the oh hurry up you do it good job there you go leo is inside the oh makes a good photo it's a pretty good photo this is nice this is a nice park kids can also like going into this sprinkler thing you see over there there's kids they run through the water there so there's a lot of stuff to do and they also have the fire um festival the fire boats they have a parade out here in may which is totally awesome and three helicopters and then they some dude jumps into the water and then other people with grappling lines come down and rescue him and then all these boats come and rescue him then they use like this colored dye and they launch it like 100 meters into the sky with these fire boats it's totally awesome all right what else is there here leo what else do you want to show the people before we we get out of here we gotta do some more playing gotta play hide and seek you know that game or jailbreak he's obsessed with the riddler and joker who do you like batman or joker that's true that's true i think we're gonna have to teach him about why this psycho is laughing.
00:17:09 John Daub: This is a really cool park um the thing is even on it's a sunday this is going to get extraordinarily crowded in the next 30 minutes i we time this pretty well but most people don't really wake up until about 10:30 11 o'clock so if anytime you could take advantage of the morning when you do have jet lag especially on the weekends you are going to be in for a real treat because we know that japan has the over tourism problem hey okay do it can you climb up the spiral not this one actually he did this when he was two never my seven trips to japan i got any jet lag uh that's really incredible where are you flying from um singapore which is on the same time zone australians won't get jet lag but i'm telling you if you're coming from new york you will get jet lag good job okay yeah peso you you're flying from australia gosh you're not gonna get jet like you're on the same time zone the good thing is again like if leo wasn't around i'd probably be able to start working at 4:00 a.m but my work is uh start making some tea are you gonna go this way are you gonna go down the slide are you going down if you go under that's where all the spiders are so be careful so a wolf a wolf spider back there once well it was kind of much smaller but it looked like a wolf spider had like fangs and stuff underneath here in the inside of the house inside the galley [?] you're beating the crowds um yeah you are the captain i'm going this way.
00:19:28 John Daub: All right everybody that was real fun uh the comment section is going to be interesting i know that a lot of people that have families okay let's make it play a little bit let's say bye to everybody okay so are you gonna sleep well tonight you're gonna take a bath you didn't take a bath last night because you fell asleep at three o'clock and we couldn't get you up because you're like captain hook sleep at night what does captain hook eat for what does he eat for dinner all right guys uh leave me a comment if you have any advice on beating jet lag there's even an app apparently that will help you and starting starting this a couple of days in advance could help you save a couple of days but then again taking advantage of the early mornings in the land of the rising sun is not having jet lag let's go play say bye to everybody all right go i'll find you are you a captain hook this time and i'm peter pan all right take care i'll see you another live stream tomorrow.
