Summary

The Hokkaido Adventure Begins New Chitose Airport Sapporo

Overview

John Daub and his friend Peter von Gomm kick off their highly anticipated 10-day Hokkaido motorcycle adventure, starting at New Chitose Airport. After a slight flight delay from Tokyo due to a braking issue, the pair navigate the domestic arrivals, collect their luggage, and meet up with their rental shuttle. The video captures the excitement and logistical realities of travel, including a humorous contrast between John's light packing and Peter's massive suitcase.

Along the way, John updates viewers on his Kickstarter project, offering details on stretch goals and rewards like postcards and documentary access. The duo discusses their route, which will take them through scenic wilderness, volcanoes, and coastal roads, primarily on rental bikes from Rental 819. They plan to ride for five days before switching to an RV for the remainder of the trip.

The episode ends as they arrive at the motorcycle shop, ready to gear up and hit the open roads of Hokkaido. Viewers get a glimpse of the bikes (Honda 400X and Yamaha Tracer) and the camaraderie between John and Peter as they prepare for the journey ahead.

00:03 John Daub: Hokkaido, literally, welcome as we just touched down. Whoa, Hokkaido, you can smell it. It's cooler here. Whoa, look at those little people down there. We are at the airport. All right, let's get out of this gate here as we hold up traffic out of excitement for what is to be a 10-day adventure.

00:41 John Daub: Hey, dude, I'm supposed to be ahead. Let's get on the flight. The flights are waiting for us. That's true, that's true. This is New Chitose Airport, home of Sapporo Classic beer. That sounds really good right now. I know, I could use one even though it's morning. The flight was delayed. We had a braking issue in Tokyo and it took about 20 minutes for them to fix it. But not to worry, they worked upon landing. Absolutely. We arrived an hour late.

01:16 John Daub: We're a little late for the arrival, so we're waiting for a little bit of time to receive. What can I do for you? Oh, excuse me. I'm incognito. Yes. Yes, thank you.

01:41 John Daub: We're starting right from the airport. That's kind of cool. Yeah, this is where it all starts. Are they meeting us at the airport? There's a bus stop. Yeah, there's a bus stop where the shuttle bus can take us to the Rental 819 motorcycle shop. Of course, we've got to go to baggage. Yeah, people are in a hurry to get out of here. I don't blame them.

02:08 Peter von Gomm: On the airplane, they're showing the infection numbers trying to psych us out, but we're...

02:21 John Daub: Oh, there's some Tokibi snack. Oh, I like those. Oh, my God. Double left. Back. Back. Double left. I feel ridiculous, but let's just say nobody knows I'm here. POV Sam's in the house. We are starting strong. You guys are all going to be with us through the adventure, including the airport. Ha ha ha. The cool thing about this is that domestic and international is so different. You probably can't be showing the customs and immigrations and whatnot, but here there's none of that because we're domestic flights. How cool is that? Look at that. The baggage claim.

03:14 Peter von Gomm: Oh, it is?

03:15 John Daub: We do have bags because of the gear that we're going to need for this trip. How do you do it? Behind the mask. So, are you ready for this?

03:32 Peter von Gomm: I'm ready. Yeah? I'm anxious to get... Did you sleep well?

03:39 John Daub: Not really. No? I was too amped up. But I'll sleep well tonight. Yeah, we will. We got a kind of a ways to ride here.

03:51 John Daub: Now, just for everybody who was thinking about backing and didn't, we have a time sale going on right now on Kickstarter from now until the end of the project. A postcard and documentary is slightly discounted, the tune of 4444 yen. It's a lucky number. 4444. And yeah, it's just kind of a fun part of the project. If you didn't pledge a little bit more, you can change your pledge if you want. We just want to encourage everybody to get the postcard because we think that Dakota's art is so good. Yeah, it's fantastic. Excited for that. And of course, the echo bag.

04:31 Peter von Gomm: Is that close? Yeah, it's alright. And the echo bags, yeah.

04:39 John Daub: Where's our bags? So, we're not gonna eat. We didn't have breakfast yet. Do you think that they're waiting? Let's social distance. The kid's going around like an airplane. Do you think they got like a tag and they're looking at us here?

05:06 Peter von Gomm: John and Peter, do you see anybody?

05:10 John Daub: No, just the outside. Are you sure? Yeah. It's a bus stop. Let me check my ass. No? But that guy holding the sign says PBG. Yeah. So, if you've never been to New Chitose Airport, you have now. This is it.

05:37 Peter von Gomm: What are you in the mood for to eat? You want some ramen or... Like I just said, a McGriddle.

05:45 John Daub: Brandania showed me some McGriddles from Hawaii. They look like the Hawaiian burgers that we have here at McDonald's. Something that's quick to go because they're gonna be waiting for us. I'm okay to get something once we get started on the bike. Between here and Noboribetsu, we have about an hour ride. That'll go by quickly. Shiroi Koibito. I like those. Gosh, it was a full flight. I didn't have anybody next to me.

06:18 Peter von Gomm: You had a couple and they were... Yeah, I think that was the only seat that was open. That was the only seat open, the one next to me. I got lucky.

06:24 John Daub: I wonder why that guy canceled. So, you have a J95 mask?

06:29 Peter von Gomm: Yeah.

06:30 John Daub: Is that like a Japan issue? Japan issue. Really? What's the difference?

06:36 Peter von Gomm: I guess it's a KN95, which is Korea, maybe? Ladies like it because it doesn't mess up their makeup so much.

06:43 John Daub: Oh, your lipstick, yeah. Dipstick. That's probably why you like it too. So, what motorcycles we got here? We're probably not going to do a live stream of the motorcycle shop, but can you tell us a little bit about it?

06:56 Peter von Gomm: Yeah, well, you have the 400cc Honda X. 400X. Honda 400X. It's kind of a cross bike. It's upright riding. And it's made so that it kind of has relatively high clearance so you can go on and off road with it. And I have a 900 Yamaha Tracer, which also is a cross style. But comfortable touring bikes. They have top cases and they also have a windscreen on both of them. Which is nice for on the highway.

07:33 John Daub: Oh, cool. Yeah. Hopefully they're gassed up and ready to go. I'm pretty excited about it too.

07:45 Peter von Gomm: I've never ridden a motorcycle off of a school course. Yeah. It has to be your first time on real streets.

07:54 John Daub: Is it any different? You reckon? What, should I be scared? School track and real streets. Just like that. This mask is bigger than my face. I want to get out of here already. Okay, let's move a little bit closer to the people because that's what you would typically do. A lot of the regionals, you can see the belt here. There's no luggage on it yet. But in regional airports, they usually have something from the prefecture that like, for Aomori, they would have maguro because the tuna fish are very popular there.

08:35 Peter von Gomm: Must really stink. No, it's a fake one.

08:38 John Daub: Oh. In Hokkaido they don't do anything because they just have so many flights. Some prefectures, regional airports might have like three flights a day but the ones in Sapporo, this is as busy as almost Haneda. Flights coming all over the place into here which makes Chitose a really convenient place to live. You can get a flight international from here as well.

09:09 John Daub: So basically the game plan is we show up at the motorcycle shop and we pack our bikes. It's gonna take a while to pack them and get our tank bag set up. Hopefully it will be a smooth process. Hey Torotoropoco is here! Thank you! Look at some of the comments here. Nobody except all of us knows you are here. That's right. Keep it secret. We're incognito. With the glasses I look like a walking cartoon character. So we have... what are those bags called that we have on the back? They're kind of waterproof bags that we have to attach to the back. Yeah, dry bags.

09:53 Peter von Gomm: Dry bags and netting and we have... I bought a tank bag that came yesterday.

10:01 John Daub: So we got quite a bit of luggage but no backpacks, right? We're gonna keep our backs free.

10:08 Peter von Gomm: Well... Do you have a backpack? Well, unless it'll fit in the top case. I don't know. I didn't bring a backpack. What's on your back right now? This is a camera bag. There's no way I'm taking it.

10:17 John Daub: Right. You're gonna put it like in the top case? Or you can just strap it onto the back of the seat. That's why we have those nets. Yeah, you didn't tell me you're bringing a backpack. I didn't think that was an option. I didn't know that. I don't want any backpack. Well, hopefully we won't have to. We can just strap it on the bike like I said. That guy's gonna need a backpack. He's gonna need a bigger bike. I need some water to drown in the backpack. And typically I will go to the front and stake it out. But I think that this distancing is just fine with me. Thanks everybody for waiting for us as we wait for our luggage. This is an eventful livestream. A flight from Osaka just came in here.

11:11 John Daub: We picked that number because it's better than 4500 and it's just more fun. Imagine like a game of poker. Four fours. Lucky hand, right? Could be. I know the number four is representative of something else. But if there's four of them, I figure it's a double negative and that means a positive, right? If there's four fours, that means that's a positive thing. If you add them up, you get sixteen. Does that have any hidden meaning? Sixteen. Any hidden meaning in that? You guys didn't know you were gonna get a math lesson today, did you? Sixteen divided by four.

12:12 Peter von Gomm: You looking for your bag or are you just trying to have some fun? Yeah. I wanna get out of here.

12:14 John Daub: I know. Get you a bowl of ramen and beer. Thank you, Toro Toro. What is it? A couple of beers? A couple of beers. We can use that tonight. Sam? Hello to Sam. Is that it? You see it? I'm saying hi to Sam. Hi, Sam. There you go, Sam. And I'll be seeing you hopefully in a couple of weeks time in Portland. So stay tuned for that. Speaking of staying tuned, I'm tuned into this belt for bags that have not arrived.

12:57 Peter von Gomm: Looks like you had to loosen that belt around your waist a little bit. Yeah. Lately. What's up with that?

13:06 John Daub: We're both gonna lose weight on this trip.

13:08 Peter von Gomm: Do you mean like by sweating it out?

13:10 John Daub: Yeah. Cause so we got some jackets, Kushitani jackets. They look a little heavy for summer, but do you think like I'm not even sure how the weather's gonna be here in Hokkaido. I didn't even check the weather. Yeah, right? I don't wanna know. How do you plan? I wanna be surprised. Yeah, the jackets, once you're on the bike and on the road, you stay pretty cool. Don't worry about that.

13:36 Peter von Gomm: It's one of my bags.

13:41 John Daub: Peter's on the move. Look for my dry bag... Both of yours came out. Did... Here comes yours. I'll get to it. Let me get you guys one. Do, do, do, do, do, do. Do you see my gray one?

14:36 Peter von Gomm: What do you think is in that suitcase? The shape of it? I've never seen a shape like that. A tuba?

14:44 John Daub: No. I dunno. Crossbow? Like a giant Santa's boot? A boot? Two boots. Wow. One mega case. Well where's the other case that size?

15:06 Peter von Gomm: I have a grey suitcase.

15:17 John Daub: Isn't it fun waiting for your luggage? It's the highlight of the trip. One of them. Mine is a champagne colored. Champagne colored? How am I going to get that on the bike? Show it. Oh that one? Holy moly. You brought that much? You brought that much stuff Peter? Why? What's in there? What does he know that I don't know that requires him to bring all that stuff? Oh my god. Oh my god. Here's my suitcase. It's a fraction of the size. Dude really? I should have brought a bigger suitcase. You could have put that in here. You could put that in there and have space left. That's crazy.

16:15 Peter von Gomm: Leo is not coming. He's not old enough to ride a motorcycle. Anyways I have to wait two years before I have riders.

16:23 John Daub: Oh is that the rule? Yeah. I didn't know that. I did pack. How many socks and underwear? You packed a sock and underwear for every day.

16:31 Peter von Gomm: I packed one pair. I just have to wash it every time I take a shower. One pair of underwear? No I got two pairs. Only two? Well you wash one and you wear one. Hello? How do you travel light? Wash one, wear one. No you don't do that? I like comfort. You know on the bikes we don't necessarily have time to dry our clothes. We're one night one place. So if it's raining. That's what the Uniqlo Drytech is for right? The Airtech or whatever. It dries in like five minutes. And anyways wear it wet. What if we're going to the clubs? I'm not going to the clubs. What if we have a hot date? Oh yeah let's go to the clubs. No we're not going to clubs. We're riding.

17:14 John Daub: Alright okay hold on. Snodgrass, snot. We are on. Okay. Let's do it. Let's do it. Let's exit. They're like the kids riding it.

17:31 Peter von Gomm: Oh Peter I found that boot. They're for riding. That's the shape of it is for riding. Look at the kids are riding their suitcases out. Like a horsey. Peter they wear boots. Look they're riding it. That's so awesome. There's a bus stop outside. Yeah did you see that? He's riding it. The boot. The boot case is right there.

18:11 John Daub: Oh neat. Oh cool. Yeah. I want to get one for Liam. Can you push me on mine? I can't believe you brought all that stuff. Is Joji in there? No. Oh my god. I feel inferior. Underwhelming. You do have the bigger bike. A lot of the stuff we're keeping behind. Let's go outside and just have a couple of words with people. Let's go outside and we're going to explain some of the trip to you before we leave our friends. Flight was delayed and we are in a bit of a hurry. So. Okay we can take off the masks here. I've got a short after air on bus stop here. It's probably down there. Ah ha. Fresh air.

19:16 John Daub: So yesterday Kanae gave me a haircut. She shaved me down. And it was the scariest thing so far of this trip. Started before the trip. With the clippers. I'm going to take off an ear. I'm nice and fresh and my head will fit easier in the helmet. So no problem there. They're coming at 1040. Oh they're coming at 1040? Over 30 bus stops. Big shout out to Emi who is our assistant. She's our headquarters. Emi is helping us on the ground.

19:54 Peter von Gomm: Underwear fun. Jennifer I don't need an underwear fun.

19:55 John Daub: Jennifer started an underwear fun for me. Yes he does. Only two pairs of pants. Two pairs of underwear for a 10 day trip. Yeah that's all you need. No you wash it. Hello sink washing. Have you never been a backpacker? Let's go. Follow man with massive suitcase. How are you going to fit that on the bike? I guess we're leaving behind some of the suitcases because in five days time we return to New Chitose airport and we're going to be taking an RV. So we're leaving the suitcases behind and picking them up. So we'll have a lot more space in the RV. Another reason why we broke up this trip. One, I'm a newbie for motorcycle riding and you shouldn't push it too much. We're not going massive amounts of distances but the roads that we've picked are going to be extremely scenic. Very nice. Around volcanoes, wilderness, oceans, seas, and lots of empty roads. I'm hoping. And melancholy roads.

21:19 Peter von Gomm: I'm going to take a bus to Kumatsu. He's waiting for us on August 6th at the end. We just made a reservation for all you can eat Yubari melon.

21:29 John Daub: Is Peter going faster or am I going too slow? Sorry I can't check the chats right now. I'm in motion. But they're coming here at 10:40. Is it 10:40? Oh it is? Is that it? We're going to 819 Rent-A-Car. I think it's a special car. That's for 819 Rent-A-Car. It's a car agency I've never seen before but I'm digging their logo. That looks like something from Dumb and Dumber. Didn't they have that car? It says 819 Rent-A-Car. I like it. Samurai Rent-A-Car. There's a lot of Rent-A-Car places in Hokkaido. I'm just going to go inside the airport for a second. I'm going to wash my hands. So, New Chitose airport. You have luggage carriers. It's a lot quieter on this side than the arrivals. It's basically like a half moon pattern here.

23:20 Peter von Gomm: Kate, no please. Kate just gave me more underwear fund. Ellis, dude, really? What kind of underwear are we going to buy with that? Charcoal underwear that they muffle the...

23:30 John Daub: Oh, okay, they're here. I hope all that just came in is not for underwear. Seriously embarrassing. Look, the Hokkaido clock. Sapporo. Some bricks. Where's your dry pack? Okay. Alright, so here's our rental. 819 is the name of the motorcycle rental shop. And we're off. Mooncake Tin is here. Mooncake Tin? That's about a 15 minute drive. Like a hundred bucks in underwear money came in. Holy moly. You can get every color of the rainbow. I just want two pairs. You can get them at 7-Eleven. That's true. But I've got one of my... Okay, so we'll have all of it? The riding gear and the boots? That's the two? I don't know how you pack so light.

24:49 Peter von Gomm: I don't need a lot. It's mostly camera. One pair of shorts? No, two pairs. I get the zip-offs and then a pair of shorts. Anything I need I can just buy on the way if I need it. If I've got space. My stuff's compact. I bought a hair dryer.

25:04 John Daub: You have a hair dryer? No. Really? Yeah. Oh yeah. Top of the line. I'm gonna ride Commando Fund. It sounds a lot cooler than Underwear Fund. That's good. Yeah, Commando. You're gonna film arriving, right?

25:24 Peter von Gomm: Yeah. So make sure you get your smartphone out. I got this going. You don't want to go Commando on a bike, John. Trust me.

25:37 John Daub: You've done it. When you say trust me, you say that because you've done it before. I've seen it. You've lost. Hey, Luis. Thank you. I'll lay out the chat here. PBG hair dryer is the wind. That hurts. That feels good. Well, when we did your artwork for your homicide game, do you remember we, uh, what my template was for you was Vincent Price, who played Egghead in the Batman, very handsome man. Carl, really? Have a great trip. Maybe get some disposable underwear. I'm glad you said that instead of diapers, which is basically what diapers are, right? Disposable underwear. The advantage of that is if you get stuck in traffic, I'll be set and you'll be the one making yellow streaks all down your leg. Yeah. I want complete freedom on this trip, so. Go Commando. Depends. Yeah, well, that's, or some Depends. I think I'll put the name of that. So that's Hokkaido, big skies, open roads, and yeah, we're gonna be riding for the next five days. Yep. And four days, four and a half days in the RV. The long haul is gonna be in the RVs, but we're gonna be bringing you live on the bikes.

27:09 Peter von Gomm: Oh, you're gonna stream going to the place? Yeah, I'm just gonna get the video.

27:12 John Daub: Oh, you'll get the video for that. This stream has been sponsored by Depends.

27:34 Peter von Gomm: How are you feeling? You're gonna be getting on a bike, and being on the roads for the very first time. I mean, you've been on a track, a test track, but it's a very different job. I mean, it's not any different than just driving a car.

28:00 John Daub: I'm not worried about traffic, you know, not crashing. Yeah, but it's also, like, you have to be aware at all times of everybody around you, everything going on. Well, that's what I'm driving at. There's no space roads here at Hokkaido. There's other stuff, like foxes, and other things, and you see if you can't suddenly pull over, you're gonna be up in the air. What do you mean by foxes? Like, foxy, fox, the animals. Yeah. But we're gonna have an awesome time. Exciting. I'm a little tired. We're gonna go slowly. Yeah, I didn't get as much, I get about five hours, but that didn't last. Okay. So, it's pretty cool that if you do make a reservation at this 819 motorcycle shop, they do have pick-ups at the airport, and it's kinda cool because I guess there's not a lot of people renting motorcycles. It's still kinda early. So, we're the only ones.

29:01 Peter von Gomm: Well, empty seats. August is the most popular time for bikers in Hokkaido. And the majority of them take a ferry into the island. Oh, right, because they have their own bikes. Yeah, and that's how I've come here twice. Overnight ferry, which is fantastic. There's a sento (community bath) on the ship, which is great, taking a bath and looking out the port windows and seeing the ocean. Then you arrive and you get on your bike and ride off the ferry. Yeah, it's awesome. So, we're doing a little different this time. Flying in to save some time. And getting rental bikes. Rental 819 is a nationwide network. We'll be talking more about them throughout the trip. Nationwide network of rental shops. And there's loads of bikes to choose from, especially with the Chitose branch. We had loads to choose from. Harleys and everything. But again, John's a newbie.

30:02 John Daub: Look at the flowers. So, we're gonna take it a little bit slower. Look at those flowers. They almost put you in a trance. Well, I can't sniff them. That's not gonna happen. We can smell them, Peter. Come on. So, if we do this again, we can use 819 and just fly to Kyushu or Shikoku and they got the bikes. Exactly. So, but again, if you're having more time, you can rent bikes in Tokyo.

30:33 Peter von Gomm: Tokyo. It's another part of the adventure. It's varying into Hakodate or but we can go to the...

30:45 John Daub: You better make an announcement. So, we have two things. Number one, the Taino [?] is on. We have a stretch goal. We have close. 3.5. I don't know what that is in dollars. Nominal. So, we will fly back in September to Hakodate. So, we're gonna go to Hakodate because we're not gonna be getting Hakodate on this trip. Right, and that's one of the coolest towns.

31:28 Peter von Gomm: The trip, like going back to Hakodate, is a small percentage more to get to that goal. The area of Wakanae. For a very special onsen (hot spring). Special level. Yes. On the surface of this onsen (hot spring).

32:05 John Daub: So, we're riding on the wheel. We're gonna be digging in it from there. We thought John had maybe soft skin already. Whaley skin. He's waiting until we reach the second stretch goal. I don't think we're gonna get to that number. But uh. But if we get to something close. But personally, my goal is 500. If we get there, 500 pounds if we get there.

32:28 Peter von Gomm: You have to jump into the lake.

32:33 John Daub: I jumped into the, we've already jumped into the sea. Which do you think it is? The blue one? That yellow blue. Is that legal? Yes. I think we'll be there August 4th. If we get to 500, we'll jump into the lake. Is that the goal? Alright, we'll jump into the lake. What's the name of that town where that oil onsen (hot spring) was?

33:00 Peter von Gomm: I don't know. Don't worry about it. Toyotomi.

33:09 John Daub: Toyotomi. Why did I turn around? Go with the pelvis and your feet. Go 819. And, what's really convenient is our camping car rental place is right here as well. And there's our car. Oh, wow. We only got the motorcycle down. Did you see it? Yeah, they're up there. Let's go up and check. Thank you for your hard work. Thank you for your hard work. Wow. Arigato gozaimasu (Thank you very much).

34:53 Peter von Gomm: Did you just say arigato tomato sauce? I heard arigato tomato sauce.

35:01 John Daub: John Dobutsu. John Dobutsu? John Dobutsu. That means like John Buddha. Okay, hi. Where's the bikes? We'll deal with this later. Okay, let me just say goodbye to everybody. You can go inside and I'll be there in a second. Bye.

35:30 John Daub: Alright, everybody. We'll see you on the road. Oh, there's a little zoom in there. We'll see you on the road and bring you back here a little bit later. But, I just wanted to show you the bikes really quickly. I think they're right there. Is that the Honda 400X? Yeah. And there's the Tracer right there. So, we gotta set these up here and then we'll be trying to do some live streams from the road. But, appreciate you guys. Buy me underwear. I don't know what that's all about. But, I'll report back and show you what I bought. Alright, see you later. Don't forget to back the project. This is exciting. Buy from 819.

36:29 John Daub: Oh, it looks nice in here. This is for Yama-san. And this is Kanban Musume (shop poster girl). What is it? Kanban Musume. It's the face of the shop. The face of the shop.
