Traveling to TOKYO JFK Terminal 7 on ANA NH109
Overview
John Daub wraps up a two-week family visit to the United States with a departure vlog from JFK Terminal 7 in New York. Flying ANA flight NH109 back to Tokyo, John shares observations on the terminal, airport pricing comparisons between the U.S. and Japan, and the logistics of traveling with a young child. The video captures the final moments of the trip, including a nostalgic drive through New Jersey and a stop at Liberty State Park to show Leo the real Statue of Liberty, correcting his misconception that it belongs in Tokyo's Odaiba.
Back at the airport, John highlights the differences in convenience store pricing, the state of Terminal 7 compared to the newer Terminal 8, and the comfort of ANA economy class. He also teases upcoming content for the channel, including a visit to Nara for the annual cleaning of the Great Buddha at Todaiji and experiments with unique Japanese convenience store food items. Japan Travel Tips
- ANA Economy Comfort: John notes ANA economy feels comparable to premium economy on U.S. carriers, worth the extra cost for long-haul flights to Tokyo.
- JFK Terminal 7: Described as aged and bare compared to Terminal 8. British Airways has moved to Terminal 8. Expect higher prices for basics like water.
- Airport Pricing: Be prepared for significantly higher prices for bottled water and snacks at U.S. airports compared to Japan (e.g., $5+ vs. ~75 cents).
- Boarding with Children: Families with young children can often board early, allowing more prep time before takeoff.
- Currency in Japan: New currency designs are being introduced; both old and new bills will be accepted for a while.
- Nara Visit: If visiting Nara in early August, check for the annual cleaning of the Great Buddha at Todaiji (August 7th).
Japanese Language & Culture Notes
- Matane (またね): Used by John at the end of the video. It means "See you later" or "Until next time," a casual goodbye.
- Statue of Liberty Confusion: Many Japanese tourists associate the Statue of Liberty with Odaiba, Tokyo, where a famous replica stands. John uses this to educate Leo on the original's location in New York.
- Currency Update: Japan is rolling out new banknote designs. John mentions he will discuss the changes in a future studio video.
- Todaiji Cleaning: A specific cultural ritual mentioned where the massive bronze Buddha statue is cleaned annually, highlighting the care taken for cultural assets in Japan.
Food & Drink Guide
- Hoagie (Wawa): 02:19 Submarine sandwich from the Pennsylvania-based convenience store chain Wawa. Kanae ordered hers with jalapeños. John praises the friendly culture at Wawa.
- Bottled Water (Dasani/Evian): 01:25 Noted as excessively expensive in JFK Terminal 7 ($5+), contrasting sharply with Japanese vending machine prices.
- Dunkin' Donuts: 04:30 Available inside Terminal 7 with embroidered sweatshirts for sale ($20-$36).
- S'mores Nissin Cup Noodles: 12:35 A unique chocolate-flavored cup noodle John plans to try in Tokyo.
- Goodbye Cake: 11:30 A cake given to the family before leaving, noted for icing styles not common in Japan.
People

- Kanae Daub: John's wife. Appears briefly at the gate and in flashbacks. Shares her enjoyment of U.S. convenience stores (Wawa) and reluctance to return to work.
- Leo: John's son. Featured in clips from Liberty State Park and at the gate. Mistakes the Statue of Liberty for the Odaiba replica.
- Peter von Gomm: Mentioned only. A fellow American YouTuber in Japan whose voice is featured on ANA's anime-wrapped planes.

Key Takeaways
- Cost of Living: Stark contrast in basic item pricing (water, snacks) between U.S. airports and Japan.
- Family Travel: Traveling with a young child requires extra prep time, but early boarding helps.
- Cultural Education: Even for children growing up abroad, clarifying cultural landmarks (Statue of Liberty) is an ongoing process.

00:01 John Daub: Hello everybody, welcome from JFK Terminal 7. Uncle Sam or Johnny Walker, one of them, is welcoming you to this terminal and I'm here to welcome you to the airport. It's been a long time, hasn't it? I'm sorry about that. We were spending a little over two weeks here in the United States visiting family. It got a little busier than I thought and jet lag hit me harder than expected. One thing led to another and here we are at the airport. Already the trip is finished. We're heading back to Tokyo.
00:54 John Daub: The flight, here's the plane right here. I'm going to take you to the gate in a second but the plane looks loaded up with food. Hopefully our bags are on there too. You see the flight attendants and crew. They seem prepared. We're going to be able to get on early thanks to Leo being a little younger. We need a little more prep time so we'll be one of the first people on the plane, which is always nice.
01:25 John Daub: A lot of people come to Terminal 7 to fly from New York to Tokyo. I like to fly direct. It's a little more to fly ANA but their economy is sort of like premium economy on U.S. carriers. Terminal 7 is pretty bare. British Airways has moved to the brand new Terminal 8. Terminal 7 is a little aged. We have a Hudson, essentially like a 7-Eleven for airports. I was looking at this bottle of water and Japan's is about 75 cents. This list freaked me out. It's really expensive for just a bottle of water.
02:19 John Daub: I'm not complaining, just saying the comparison between Japan and the U.S. is funny. You can't even find a Dasani 1-liter for $5. You have to buy Evian, the more expensive brand. They get you one way or another. We took Leo to get a hoagie, shout out to Ellis and David. We got one at Wawa because they're having hoagie fest. Leo had his first hoagie. Actually this is Kanae's third or fourth. Look at that, she put on jalapeños. We had a good hoagie fest in the car on the way to the airport.
02:51 John Daub: We also stopped to see the Statue of Liberty near Ellis Island, which was really special. Let me get some video. There's Leo and I walking over to Ellis Island. New York City in the distance. We stopped at Liberty State Park in New Jersey, sort of on the way to the airport. Leo didn't really care about the Statue of Liberty. He wanted to go see Gotham City. There's Kanae taking pictures. There's the Verrazano Bridge. My dad drove us; he thinks New York City is Gotham City.
03:29 John Daub: This is the view on the turnpike coming to JFK. New York City is massive. From around Staten Island it's still about an hour away. He's like, "Daddy, Gotham City." I'm like, "Yeah, Batman's in there, buddy." We got to see the Statue of Liberty and that was cool. The reason I wanted to go is he thinks it's in Odaiba. He thinks the Statue of Liberty is a Tokyo thing, and it's not. It's American. The one in Odaiba isn't real. There's Gotham City, aka New York, where the World Trade Towers were. Now you see the Freedom Tower. From Liberty State Park it's almost empty. You get a nice view of her backside and he got the point: Lady Liberty is American.
04:30 John Daub: Now he knows, and now you know too if you didn't already. There's a Dunkin' Donuts inside Terminal 7 and prices are reasonable. The sweatshirts are nice, $20 embroidered. Let people know where you're from. Leo would like one; it'd let him know he's not in Japan anymore. But $36 is high in yen. I have to get a bottle of water. I hope they start arresting people here. NYPD, please do that. It's cool to see NYPD though.
06:02 John Daub: They got Dasani here; the other Hudson was sold out. Souvenirs are limiting. Ellis, hey I see you. It's been 48 months, four years, awesome. Thank you. Duty-free has M&Ms, Hershey bars. Security check and lounge are up here but it's pay-to-play, not really nice. The one in Terminal 8 after British Airways left isn't as nice. ANA uses that one. There's a food court with burgers but not inspiring.
07:05 John Daub: There's our flight. ANA NH109. What stinks is we don't have a painted plane, no Pikachu. If you do, you get Peter von Gomm's voice only on the anime-wrapped planes. We checked in two hours before and nobody was there. Everybody comes three hours early. Sometimes coming later pays off. Gate six at Terminal 7. Power ports here. Say hi to Leo and Kanae. I was watching Despicable Me; Kevin's the bright one.
08:46 John Daub: New Jersey City makes me nostalgic. Worked for Advance Newspaper Company in 2006. My dad, a captain on oil tankers, talked about how it's changed. Driving through was nostalgic. Here's Leo and Kanae. Leo, stay in America or go to Japan? He's on the tablet. Parents know: survival mode. Airplane's the only time he gets it. He's got Kanae's phone.
09:27 Kanae Daub: How was the trip?
09:30 John Daub: It's nice. It's good.
09:33 Kanae Daub: You want to go home?
09:36 John Daub: No.
09:37 Kanae Daub: Really? It's like 100 degrees. I don't want to go back to work.
09:42 John Daub: Oh, you don't want to go back.
09:44 Kanae Daub: Yeah. I enjoyed summer here. It's hot. It's hot in Tokyo too. Gonna be worse.
09:56 John Daub: Did you like your hoagie?
09:57 Kanae Daub: Yeah, I like the hoagie. Now I know how to order it. I think you like Wawa more than the hoagie.
10:08 John Daub: Yeah, she likes Wawa. If you don't know Wawa, Google it. It's going to take over the world.
10:15 John Daub: Wawa people are friendly, not just staff but customers. Everybody held the door for me going in and out with stuff for the family in the car. That was really nice. Been a long time since a live stream. Getting back into the grind, sharing the flight. Gonna make a video on the plane, then at Haneda in 14-15 hours show the food and NH109 experience.
11:30 John Daub: We got a goodbye cake. I like the icing; you don't get this in Japan. Terminal 7 is under construction; parking's a disaster. Got dropped off, makes goodbye anticlimactic. When back in Japan, new currency: old on left, new on right. They'll accept both awhile. In studio I'll talk changes in Japan.
12:35 John Daub: Got s'mores Nissin Cup Noodles with chocolate to try in Tokyo. Wanted streams but hard with family. You get it. Lots coming: square watermelon, cleaning of Todaiji in Nara. They clean the entire bronze Buddha statue once a year on August 7th. Dudes on the head cleaning it. So Japan to be super clean. New way to see Nara as ritual, not tourist spot.
14:31 John Daub: All right everybody, see ya. Gotta get the family, bottle of water. Matane. We're back. Gonna be fun.
