Summary

# USA: We're Stuck at JFK Airport – TWA Hotel

## Overview

In this heartfelt livestream, John Daub and his son Leo find themselves stranded at JFK Airport in New York due to a severe snowstorm. What began as a family trip to visit relatives in New England had to be hastily rearranged when Kanae, John's Japanese wife, fell ill and was advised by her doctor not to fly. With conditions too dangerous for John's parents to drive and collect them, John made the decision to stay at the TWA Hotel—a unique lodging option directly connected to the airport terminals via the original 1960s tubes. The video captures the chaos of winter travel, the beauty of watching planes being de-iced at sunrise, an impromptu snowball fight in sub-zero temperatures, and Leo's infectious enthusiasm for snow, which is a rare treat for a Tokyo-based child. John also shares personal updates about family challenges, including a recent loss and Kanae's ongoing recovery, while delivering his signature blend of travel commentary and nostalgic appreciation for the TWA Hotel's retro-futuristic design.

## Japan Travel Tips

- **Airline food hack:** Japanese airline meals are superior quality—bring some on board if you can. The sukiyaki option was surprisingly good.
- **Kid headphone solutions:** If your child can't fit standard headphones, wrap blanket packaging around the ear cushions to create more space. Bring a headphone extension or kid-sized headphones as a backup.
- **TWA Hotel booking:** You can check in early for $25 extra (12 PM instead of 4 PM)—worth it for tired travelers with jet lag.
- **Airport connectivity:** The TWA Hotel connects directly to multiple JFK terminals via the original 1960s tubes and the AirTrain, making it extremely convenient for early flights.

## Japanese Language & Culture Notes

- **hanjuku tamago** (半熟卵): Soft-boiled or semi-hard-boiled egg, a common component in Japanese airline meals and breakfast dishes.
- **sukiyaki** (すき焼き): A classic Japanese hot pot dish featuring thinly sliced beef, vegetables, and a sweet-savory broth. Presented here as an in-flight meal.
- **Enoki/neba mushrooms** (なめこ/えのき茸): Slender, delicate mushrooms commonly used in Japanese soups and hot pots.
- **Cultural observation:** The contrast between Japanese efficiency and quality standards in travel (airline food, service) versus the higher costs and sometimes lower quality found in American airports highlights the different cultural approaches to hospitality and commerce.

## People

- **John Daub:** The host, navigating a disrupted family trip with resilience and humor. Shares vulnerable updates about family health challenges while keeping the tone positive and informative. His love for retro aesthetics and aviation history shines through as he explores the TWA Hotel.
- **Leo:** John's young son, experiencing heavy snowfall (rare in Tokyo), proudly pointing out American flags, police cars, and claiming victory in the snowball fight. His interruptions and commentary add playful energy and remind viewers of the authentic family dynamic.
- **Kanae Daub:** John's wife, mentioned throughout as the reason for trip changes. She fell ill before the trip, and the doctor recommended she not fly. John expresses hope for her recovery.
- **John's parents:** Unable to pick them up from JFK due to dangerous snowstorm conditions, prompting the last-minute TWA Hotel stay.
- **Gil:** Friend from Denver who appears briefly in the snowball fight footage. John's caption notes they "might have more snow here than in the Rocky Mountains."
- **Heather:** Mentioned briefly in a birthday wish during the hotel room tour.

## Key Takeaways

1. **Flexibility is essential in winter travel:** Weather disruptions can derail even the best-laid plans. John adapted by staying at the closest hotel rather than risking dangerous road conditions.
2. **The TWA Hotel is a unique experience:** For aviation enthusiasts and design lovers, staying in a 1962 renovated terminal with original details, connecting tubes, and runway views is a one-of-a-kind opportunity—despite the premium price.
3. **Japanese airline food quality exceeds Western standards:** John's sukiyaki meal from a Japanese airline stood out as superior to typical Western in-flight fare.
4. **Airport hotels offer practical solutions:** When flights are delayed or weather strikes, staying at an on-site hotel (TWA is 2 minutes via AirTrain to ANA's Terminal 7) prevents difficult ground transportation.
5. **Small moments create the best memories:** The impromptu snowball fight, Leo's wonder at snowfall, and discovering vintage magazines turned a travel disruption into a cherished experience.

00:00:01 John Daub: Hello everybody.

00:00:02 Leo: Yes, hello.

00:00:04 John Daub: We are stuck in New York. All right, we'll talk about that in a second. Leo, let me give you the story here. So we decided to come to the United States. Kanae couldn't come, she's been sick. So she had to stay behind—the doctor recommended.

00:00:22 Leo: And then, and then. Can I go to the doctor?

00:00:26 John Daub: That's right, Kanae went to the doctor. So we're going to be here for a little bit less than two weeks, which is less than we had planned. But Leo and I decided that. Well, because of the snowstorm that came, we decided to stay at the closest hotel, which was this one. This is the TWA, which is an airline that no longer exists. Hotel, which is crazy. All right, let's show that we want to share the hotel. This is the view. Just to give you an idea. This is crazy, right? What do you see here, Leo? Just talk about it.

00:01:01 Leo: This is an airplane. I can see airplane here from here. And then it snow here and feet down here.

00:01:15 John Daub: You can also see police cars. Was talking about.

00:01:18 Leo: Yes, and ambulance. Ambulance. I saw an ambulance there.

00:01:23 John Daub: Oh yeah, he saw an ambulance. And these tubes here, connect. These tubes here connect the hotel with Terminal 5. Yeah, and Merry Christmas by the way. It's been a while.

00:01:39 Leo: It's a.

00:01:43 John Daub: It's been a while because of all the stuff that's happening. We had a loss in the family. Kanae's been sick. Leo had school, he's been okay. But we've had to deal with a lot of stuff. So I'm sorry I haven't been able to live stream as much as I would like to. But now we're gonna show you exactly.

00:02:00 Leo: And there are American flag and In America it's 15 star on the 50.

00:02:10 John Daub: 50 stars.

00:02:11 Leo: 50 stars, that's right.

00:02:14 John Daub: Merry Christmas everybody. This is the view from the window. This has been really cool to watch them de-icing the planes and also taking off.

00:02:26 Leo: Snowball fight.

00:02:28 John Daub: Oh yeah, we had a snowball fight. Alright, I'm gonna show everybody the video here. We'll take a look at the room in a second. I want to give you an overview of that and as well I made a video really quickly here. This is from the departure at Haneda Airport. Saying bye to mama, which was really sad. Here you can see as well. And all of us are like oh, we wanted her to go this trip. We were supposed to go and she got a new. I got her an Apple Watch for Christmas present. We wanted to all go here but the doctor recommended that she not fly. So it's just me and Leo who went on this adventure, I guess you could say.

00:03:08 Leo: And can I can. I didn't go because. Because he's.

00:03:15 John Daub: She's sick.

00:03:15 Leo: She's sick.

00:03:16 John Daub: Look, look, look. That's our plane.

00:03:18 Leo: She's sick.

00:03:20 John Daub: That's our plane right there.

00:03:21 Leo: Yeah, yeah, yeah.

00:03:22 John Daub: We're inside.

00:03:23 Leo: And she. She can't go inside the plane. And. And because.

00:03:33 John Daub: What's that?

00:03:34 Leo: Yes. This is my.

00:03:36 John Daub: This is sukiyaki, right? Did you eat it all?

00:03:40 Leo: Yeah. No, no.

00:03:42 John Daub: There's the hanjuku tamago, soft egg and. And beef.

00:03:47 Leo: Yeah. And because Mama didn't go because in. In season stomach. It's blood.

00:03:57 John Daub: Yeah. She's gonna be okay. Yeah. You shouldn't talk about too much Leo. That's. Mama can talk about it. But if you take a look here, he's got his iPad. He wanted to watch the movie here. I'm trying the sukiyaki here, and it's pretty good, actually. I was surprised. I think the food was prepared in the. In Japan this time. If it's prepared. That's. That's potato salad. If it's prepared in the United States, the food quality is really bad. So I don't know. You get really good food out of Japan and really bad food going back to Japan. I think we'll see what happens. There's some okra with some neba. Neba mushrooms, I think. Enoki. So the headphones don't fit well on Leo for kids. So I came up with this. I don't know if that's the best way to do it, but that was the only way. And actually the flight attendant had even a better idea. I'll tell you that later. But I was able to take the wrappers from the blankets, wrap it around the top of the headphone, and give them a little bit more space so it would fit. Hey, it worked all right. But knowing this now, it's probably a good idea with kids to have a headphone extension if you have headphones in there. It doesn't look like the greatest style, but it worked, I'm telling you. Duct tape. If we had it. But we worked with. I let them know, like, hey, come on. Did you have a kid's headphones here? They didn't, unfortunately. But, hey, you know what? It worked okay.

00:05:30 John Daub: We arrived into Tokyo just fine, Into New York just fine. I took that Skytrain to get into TWA Hotel, which is a very close to Terminal 7. That's the one where ANA uses out of New York. This is. I guess it's a renovated old 1962 airport for TWA. This is the terminal of it. Outside, Leo, of course, is enjoying the snow, but inside they've renovated it so well and the hotel is an interesting stay. If you've got no other place to stay and if you're just curious and you like the nostalgia of it. This is outside. We really had a great time walking around. He's just kind of freaked out like snow because we don't get so much in Tokyo. Remember this? You go look at the snow on the chair.

00:05:54 Leo: Yeah.

00:05:55 John Daub: And what did I say? Please stay out of the road. This is New York, right?

00:06:01 Leo: Oh yeah, I love New York. And here they say New York, right?

00:06:09 John Daub: This is inside that. Good job, Leo. This is the TWA Hotel. It's very much like the old 1962 theme of it. You have the, the sound of the rotating destinations up there on the board. The style of it. They just don't make airports like this anymore. The one in India and Mumbai I thought was really well done. But nowadays it's just for functionality more than style, which is kind of a shame. But outside these massive windows which show off the beautiful. What used to be, I guess the tarmac now is still. There's a. I guess that's Connie. I don't know what the name of the plane is, but the models in there, the style, the history, it's all laid out inside the hotel in a very well done manner. So I thought that this is a really cool stay option. However, we paid an arm and a leg to stay here last night because I guess it was 24 hours before or so this is when we came into the room. The blinds go up and we're like, okay, so I paid a little bit extra to have a runway view. Of course you're going to pay a little bit extra for a runway view. Why would you not do that if you're going to be coming to this place? Place. And the first impression, Leo, what did you think when you saw this? You're like, what? Wow.

00:07:19 Leo: Say what? And then I, that I just say, why is snow here?

00:07:26 John Daub: Like worried about the snow. He slept on the left side, I slept on the right side. And there you go. That's an amazing view. We were able to check in early for an extra $25.

00:07:39 Leo: Thank.

00:07:39 John Daub: I want to say thank you to them. They didn't have to do that, but they let us in at 12 o'clock instead of four, which would have been four hours of really hard travel because Leo had some jet lag here just the little styles of it. The retro style of the stuff in there. There's even a 1962 Life magazine on the desk behind here. It's pretty cool. Leo has never seen a phone like that. I think even the tag when we had to leave your luggage for a couple of hours, they give you this TWA tag on there, which makes me think of the 1980s. The pool on the roof, I think that's the eighth floor. I think it's heated. But we went up there, it was minus 12 degrees Celsius up there on the roof. So we didn't stay for very long. But look at that view of the runway from the pool. How cool is that? These runways seem like they go on forever inside of the hotel. These tubes that connect the terminals are super cool. Very retro. I just wish that they made the future looked like the future that they thought it was back in 1960s. Right. It's just so much cooler. Leo's showing me how he has no fingers. I always did that when I had gloves too. The food here is super expensive. That sandwich. $20 for that? That's crazy. But it was. It was a good sandwich. But it was. It's like I'm having a little bit of a sticker shock because that's. That's like 3,000 yen for a sandwich. Like what? Because you're coming from Japan having a morning coffee from Dunkin Donuts. And that was three donuts and a coffee was like $25 too, which is crazy. We woke up pretty early. So we saw the sunrise, which was so beautiful. Seeing the planes come in. That's from the iPhone. Is just really a cool experience. $20. Yeah. Airport prices in here. That's just too much. This is New York after all. So I mean you gotta. And at the airport you're going to pay what. What they want you to pay. But at sunset yesterday, the lobby is so amazing. Look at that. I love the retro style of everything. It does take you back to like Mad Men or the. A time where aesthetics was kind of cool back then. These days everything feels just a little bit generic, but more for. Built for practicality. Back then it was built for. I don't know. Here was. I guess this is the sunrise now from this morning. It was really beautiful. Let's say the great thing about being jet lagged is that you will always catch the sunrise. It makes it a lot easier being fully awake there. Beautiful stripes and stars right there. And the airport traffic coming in. Glad we're not in that. And there's those tubes that lead from one airport to the other. Again, like, if you ever have the chance and you're at JFK, stopping in at Terminal 5 on the AirTrain or to see this hotel, just hang out in the lobby for a little bit is really cool. But if you do, if you do get stuck in JFK, I think this is a pretty cool hotel. It's. If it's a little bit overpriced, I think. But again, it's New York and this is just an experience, I think, to stay inside of here. So for anyone traveling to Japan, it's like two minutes on the sky train to Terminal 7.

00:10:47 Leo: Can you tell me.

00:10:49 John Daub: Hold on. We're still playing the movie. You can, you can have it. Leo's gonna end the live stream. He has something he want to say to you. There you go. So it's a beautiful, beautiful. Wait until the music plays. The elevator inside there. I think these are original stuff. I don't know if it's been redone. Like all the stuff from the 1960s. The elevator feels retro as well. Leo's like, you go first. He has a fear of me leaving him behind. I would never do that. And outside, this is our snowball fight. You remember, I'm going to show it. I took this here. This is outside. We walked in the sub zero weather outside. Just take a look at the airplane in the back there. It's pretty cool. This is taken with a 360 camera. Gil is here from beautiful sunny. From sunny, maybe slightly colder Denver. We might have more snow here than in the Rocky Mountains. The snowstorm yesterday caused a lot of havoc and my parents could not pick us up because it was just too dangerous of the conditions when the flight came. So he said, let's err on the side of safety. And we took this hotel room at the last minute. So I think it was a good idea. You just. Nobody wants to drive in snow and ice. Really. The luggage was amazing. I like. I don't know, I just. They make suitcases differently these days. Everything has wheels. But for all of you people under the age of 40, this is the way it used to travel. Like in the 80s, you'd have a suitcase that looked like a suitcase. You didn't have wheels on it. You didn't pack everything that didn't look like that zombie suitcase there. But you didn't pack everything. You didn't have to take everything with you. Nowadays, everybody has to take everything with them. The suitcase sizes are incredibly large. But hey, we're here not to complain about suitcase sizes. But to enjoy yourselves, which we really did. I might have gotten a little bit lucky with some of my throw balls, my snowballs. I'm pretty accurate. I tried not to hit and I hit. It's just. And he. I actually was trying to get hit. I'm trying to teach him how to. I told him, you don't need a snowball to get people. See, that was mean. That's so mean. I felt really bad. It wasn't a lot, but look at. Look, he's already planning revenge. This is supposed to be a snowball fight. Okay, everybody. Anyone who's getting angry at me, we're so. If I didn't do that, he would have been really angry. All right, he wants. We're here this way. He wants me to treat him like he's a big guy. So were you angry when I. When I got snow on you? See? Why? Because you got revenge right here. What do you want to say to the people? Okay, hurry up. We have to. Give me that on the way.

00:13:37 Leo: Give me that.

00:13:39 John Daub: What do you want to say to the people then?

00:13:41 Leo: Give me. Give me this.

00:13:43 John Daub: All right, Take it. Please. Say please.

00:13:45 Leo: Please.

00:13:45 John Daub: Okay.

00:13:46 Leo: Okay. And on the elevator. When we are on the elevator, we saw some music.

00:13:54 John Daub: Oh, what? Tell them. Tell me about the music.

00:13:56 Leo: About the music. That Christmas music. And we take picture on the airplane. And then we did snowball fight.

00:14:10 John Daub: And who won the snowball fight?

00:14:13 Leo: No, no, no. Me, me, me, me. You. And then. And then next. On next. In we go. We go to the.

00:14:29 John Daub: Go see. We're going to go see our. Your uncle and aunt in. In New England. Okay, Leo, I got to end this because we actually do have to check out. The checkout's at 11. I just. I wanted to keep this really short. He's really. He's really excited about doing this live stream. Okay, Leo, we got to end this here because I have a. You get rusty when you don't do live streams. The last thing I want to show you guys, which is just so cool. Like, everything is really retro in here. Look at this. This is an old 1962 Life magazine. 20 cents. That's crazy. And just there's like little Lipton soup. The little teeny things. Man, everything just seemed larger than life back then. Look at how big the pictures are. You can feel it, you know? I don't know. I think a lot. Look at how beautiful these. The maps are. That's interesting. Whoa. I used to eat these when I was a kid who had this one. This is the turkey with the. With the apples and the potatoes, right? Oh, my gosh. I used to eat that. Grandma used to make this Leo for me when she was busy. Oh, my Lord. This is pretty cool. I should have spent more time looking at this. Hey, Ocean Spray. Oh, my goodness. Really? All right. That's all.

00:16:17 Leo: Okay. Get me.

00:16:19 John Daub: Oh, no. We gotta say goodbye.

00:16:21 Leo: No, no, no. I saw the TV show.

00:16:23 John Daub: All right, show everybody the tv. Okay. Pull it out. Show us. This is the last thing I

00:16:30 Leo: this.

00:16:31 John Daub: But be careful and don't put your fingers on the screen. Look, look. It's pretty cool, right? So you could turn that. You could watch TV and watch the airplanes at the same time. Don't touch the screen. It's not our tv. Happy birthday, Heather. There you go. All right. Fox and the Day Walker. Happy New Year, everybody. We'll be. I'll do another live stream before the New Year. I'll probably do some talking about some of the issues. Even the pencils here are pretty cool. I might have taken one. I mean, I think they're there for that sort of. Hold on, hold on. And this is the shower. It's not very big. Hotel room again. It's really expensive for what? Gonna pay. But we gotta say bye to everybody, Leo, because we gotta stay ready.

00:17:39 Leo: We can touch this one. Oh, this is just pencil and lead.

00:17:46 John Daub: That's right.
